Hello! First of all, I just wanted to say I enjoy the podcast and have been tuning in every week for some time now. You guys do a wonderful job highlighting the paranormal throughout the region. 

In honor of the upcoming spooky season I think it would be great if you guys could do a podcast on haunted locations in western North Carolina. My friends and I are looking to get a road trip together to explore some of the more famous and off the beaten path haunted locations in the area. I'm a skeptic who wants to believe, and I'm hoping that this year will be my year to experience something paranormal. I'll start off the list by sharing a couple of the reportedly haunted locations in my neck of the woods. 

Golden Valley Ghosts 

I've been to the Fellowship Baptist Church many times during the day and the night. While I've never had any experiences there, it is creepy because the church is semi-abandoned (they only have church there twice a year), and it's very isolated up on a mountain with a couple mile gravel road leading up to it. You even have to drive over a small (and reportedly haunted - see link) creek to get to it. The church is ramshackle and is open to visitors to come in and sign the guest book. The graveyard is extremely old, which adds to the creepy ambience. See link for details about the hauntings. As I mentioned before, I've yet to experience anything there yet, so I can't relay any stories of my own at this time.

This is my town's most famous ghost story by far. I'm a middle grades teacher in the area, and we always read this story around Halloween time. Supposedly, the place where Daniel Keith was executed (the old city gallows) was cursed, causing every business that operated there to fail, until Dominoes took over in the 2000's. The address is 114 S Washington St, Rutherfordton, NC 28139; however, the shadow hasn't been reported there since 1949 for reasons explained in the story. Again, I've never experienced anything here myself, but I make sure to drive by there every year sometime during the Halloween season. Unfortunately, It's not very creepy because it's in the downtown area of Rutherfordton. Daniel Keith is reportedly buried in an unmarked grave at the nearby Gilboa Church graveyard. This area is much more atmospheric, and I always have a good time trying to figure out where he is buried. 

So here are my stories, feel free to use them if you want to. I think it would be awesome if you (and maybe some of your listeners) could share your local haunts in Western NC so that we can all go out and enjoy them this Fall. I hope that you consider this as a possible episode for your podcast.

• Bryson-I think I found another Fortean term of the day. It may be a good idea to talk about John Keel's Men in Black (MIB) reported at the time of the Mothman. 

• My mother and father back in the early 70’s, were in Linville and decided to see the lights. They stopped at the lookout on the road and a few cars pulled in. Later a car driving by slowed down and pulled in. It was woman, she asked them if they wanted to go see the lights. Everyone got in their cars and followed the woman. She drove a short ways and turned on a dirt path. They followed it to a spot. There was a drop off in front of them. The woman said that this is where the army studied the lights. She left and as it got dark, lights started rising out of the drop off. My mom was scared. Daddy swears they looked like the glow off of cigarettes. They glowed more than gave off light. They were feet away.

Review: On the Trail of UFOs: Dark Sky

The newest "On the Trail of" by Small Town Monsters is a great evolution towards the storytelling documentaries brought about by STM. While the first "On the Trail of UFO's" may have felt like a crash-course into the deep end of the UFO phenomena, this second installment pulls viewers back into critical aspects of the phenomena that seem to be overlooked by current media.

Much of what we ingest online and through television can be described as "digestible snippets" or shock-video announcements, Small Town Monsters pulls back, and immerses viewers into the position of the researcher, the documentarian. Seeing some familiar faces in both the YT and Paranormal communities, I enjoyed the cinematic direction taken in this documentary as an encouragement to get back into the field and get on the trail of the stories that make up the folklore and mystery of the small towns I explore. 

Camera angles situate the viewer as though they're taking part in the retelling of experiences, in-depth conversations with experiencers and witnesses reminding those interested in the phenomena that the most important part of the phenomena are the witnesses and the accounts. It's enough to go charge my camera batteries and beat down the doors of storytellers in my neck of the woods, seek out the strange stories and legends around the Blue Ridge & Appalachia. 

Overlapping historic accounts and folklore, I'm always grateful for STM's ability to bring folklorists into their modern work. Much of my informal interest is the evolution and linking of stories, and I appreciate Heather being able to provide her perspective on everything correlating. 

While a bit of this was filmed during 2020, I appreciate the newer faces brought into the story surrounding the northern Appalachian region. True to STM's continued theme of family, including new individuals wraps up a larger message of community and welcoming new experiences/encounters into the bigger picture.
