Episode 33: The Facial Injuries a Crash Can Leave Behind
Season 1 · Episode 33
Thursday, October 8, 2026 • Duration 26:02
A car crash can leave injuries that are easy to see, like a broken nose or facial bruising. Other changes may become clear later, when someone notices they cannot breathe as well, hear as well, or smell the way they did before.
In this episode of Crashes, Claims & Clarity, Darrell Burrow talks with Dr. Aaron Fletcher, an ear, nose, and throat surgeon who specializes in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery. They discuss what can happen to the face, nose, and ears during a collision, why some symptoms deserve a closer look, and how facial injuries can affect both daily function and a person’s sense of self.
Five key takeaways
✅ A facial injury may involve more than the damage visible on the outside.
✅ New trouble breathing through the nose, changes in smell or hearing, ringing in the ears, or dizziness are symptoms to discuss with a medical professional.
✅ Timing can matter with nasal fractures. Dr. Fletcher explains why he aims to evaluate these injuries before the bones heal in the wrong position.
✅ Recent photographs, imaging, and medical records can help document how an injury changed someone’s appearance or function.
✅ Recovery can mean breathing well and looking and feeling like yourself again.

Episode 32: The Legal Domino Effect of a Car Crash
Season 1 · Episode 32
Thursday, October 1, 2026 • Duration 36:58
A car crash rarely creates just one legal problem. The injury claim may receive the most attention, but the financial, insurance, traffic, bankruptcy, and estate-planning consequences can continue long after the vehicles are removed from the road.
In this episode of Crashes, Claims & Clarity, attorney Darrell Burrow speaks with Georgia attorney Terence O. “Terry” McGinn about the legal domino effect that can follow a serious collision.
Drawing on decades of experience in consumer finance and law, Terry explains why injured people need to consider the entire financial picture before making decisions that could affect their settlement or future security. He discusses the danger of borrowing against an anticipated settlement, the importance of disclosing a personal injury claim during bankruptcy, and how paying a traffic citation without first obtaining legal advice may create unintended consequences.
Darrell and Terry also examine what can happen when damages exceed an at-fault driver’s insurance limits, why realistic expectations matter in personal injury cases, and which estate-planning documents become critical when a crash leaves someone incapacitated or causes a death.
This conversation shows why a crash should never be treated as an isolated insurance claim. One accident can affect a person’s health, employment, debt, property, family, and financial future.
Listeners will learn:
✅ Why settlement advances can consume a substantial portion of an injured person’s recovery.
✅ How a personal injury claim may affect a pending bankruptcy case.
Bonus: Financial Preparedness: How to Protect Your Family and Your Future
Thursday, September 17, 2026 • Duration 21:57
This special drop-feed episode features Crashes, Claims & Clarity host Darrell Burrow as the guest on Legacy Blueprint Plan It Forward, hosted by Georgia estate planning attorney Mike Bascom.
Darrell draws on more than 30 years of experience handling personal injury and bankruptcy matters to discuss what families can do before an accident, financial crisis, or other major life event turns their world upside down.
The conversation explores the financial mistakes people often make when trouble strikes, why waiting too long to seek legal advice can make a difficult situation worse, and what someone should do after receiving a significant personal injury settlement. Darrell also explains how preparation, trusted professional guidance, family support, and faith can help people recover and rebuild.
Five Key Takeaways
✅ Preparation matters because unexpected injuries, illnesses, and financial hardships can happen to any family.
✅ After receiving a substantial settlement, pause before making major purchases or financial decisions.
✅ Bankruptcy should not automatically be viewed as failure. In the right circumstances, it can provide a legal path toward rebuilding.
✅ Seeking advice early gives people more options and may prevent a challenging situation from becoming worse.
✅ Strong relationships, trusted advisors, family support, and faith can help people become more resilient during difficult seasons.

Episode 31: Functional Capacity Evaluations After an Injury
Season 1 · Episode 31
Thursday, September 10, 2026 • Duration 32:59
What Can You Really Do After an Injury?
An MRI or X-ray can show an injury, but it cannot always show how that injury affects someone’s ability to work, care for themselves, or return to everyday life.
On this episode of Crashes, Claims & Clarity, Darrell Burrow talks with occupational therapist Peggy Freedman, President of The Freedman Group in Marietta, Georgia.
With more than 35 years of experience, Peggy has completed more than 4,000 Functional Capacity Evaluations and over 30,000 treatments. She specializes in evaluating how injuries affect real-world function, from returning to work to managing daily activities safely and independently.
Peggy explains what Functional Capacity Evaluations can reveal, why job descriptions do not always reflect the real physical demands of a job, and how hidden injuries can impact recovery long after an accident.
5 Key Takeaways
✅ Medical stability does not always mean functional readiness.
A person may be considered medically stable while still having significant difficulty returning to work or handling everyday activities.
✅ Functional Capacity Evaluations look beyond the diagnosis.
An MRI or X-ray can identify pathology, but an FCE helps determine what someone can realistically and safely do.
✅ Real job duties may be very different from the written job description.
Lifting, reaching, pushing, pulling, and other physical demands are often missing or incomplete on paper.

Episode 30: What Spine Scans Can Miss After a Crash
Season 1 · Episode 30
Thursday, September 3, 2026 • Duration 49:59
A patient leaves the emergency room after a crash and is told the imaging looks normal. But days later, the pain is worse, movement is limited, and everyday activities have become difficult.
What happens when the scan and the patient’s experience do not match?
In this episode of Crashes, Claims & Clarity, Darrell L. Burrow speaks with Dr. Ben Burch, a double board-certified orthopedic spine surgeon at the Atlanta Spine Institute.
Dr. Burch explains that emergency room imaging is designed to answer specific questions. A CT scan can provide valuable information about bones and traumatic injuries, but it may not reveal every soft-tissue injury, muscle or ligament strain, or other source of pain. A more obvious injury can also create “distracting pain,” causing a patient to overlook symptoms in another part of the body until later.
The conversation also examines one of the most difficult questions following an accident: Did the crash cause a spinal condition, or did it aggravate a condition that was already present?
Dr. Burch explains why imaging alone cannot always answer that question. The timing of symptoms, the patient’s history, previous medical records, physical examination, functional limitations, and response to treatment can all help provide a more complete clinical picture.
Darrell and Dr. Burch also discuss how physicians determine whether conservative treatment is working, when progress has plateaued, and when surgery may become an appropriate option. Dr. Burch describes his multimodal approach to nonsurgical care, which may include physical therapy, anti-inflammatory treatment, medications directed at nerve or muscle symptoms, and carefully targeted injections.

Episode 29: Can Your Estate Plan Survive a Crash?
Season 1 · Episode 29
Thursday, August 27, 2026 • Duration 33:19
Can your estate plan survive a crash?
A serious accident can test far more than your insurance coverage. It can expose outdated documents, incorrectly titled assets, missing decision-making authority, and family members who have no idea what to do next.
In this episode of Crashes, Claims & Clarity, Darrell Burrow speaks with estate planning and elder law attorney Mike Bascom about whether an estate plan will actually work when a family needs it most.
Mike explains why an effective estate plan must be written, current, and appropriate for the state where someone lives. He also discusses how beneficiary designations and asset ownership can override the instructions in a will or trust.
Darrell and Mike explore what someone should consider after receiving a significant injury settlement, why a spouse may not automatically have the authority to operate a family business, and what can happen to rental properties when an owner becomes incapacitated.
They also discuss preparing the professionals, family members, and trusted individuals who will eventually carry out the plan. Without clear instructions and access to the necessary information, an unexpected crisis can quickly become an expensive and emotional treasure hunt.
In this episode, you will learn:
Why an estate plan should be reviewed after major life changes
How beneficiary designations and asset ownership can undermine a plan
What to consider before spending or investing an injury settlement
Why business owners need an incapacity and succession plan
How to prepare the people responsible for carrying out your wishes
Episode 28: PTSD After a Car Accident: Signs You Shouldn’t Ignore
Season 1 · Episode 28
Thursday, August 13, 2026 • Duration 15:53
A car accident can leave injuries that don't show up on an X-ray.
On this episode of Crashes, Claims & Clarity, Georgia personal injury attorney Darrell Burrow sits down with Dr. J. Todd George, Psy.D., licensed clinical psychologist and evaluation specialist with Atlanta Psychological Services, to discuss the psychological impact that can follow a serious crash or traumatic injury.
Dr. George explains that motor vehicle accidents are a significant cause of post-traumatic stress disorder and that symptoms aren't always immediate. Survivors may experience nightmares, heightened anxiety, avoidance of driving, changes in sleep, irritability, withdrawal, or repeatedly replaying the accident in their minds.
They also discuss why children can show trauma very differently from adults. Rather than talking about their feelings, children may regress in previously mastered skills or repeatedly reenact the accident through play.
Perhaps most importantly, Dr. George explains when normal stress following an accident may have crossed the line into something that deserves professional evaluation.
In this episode, you'll learn:
Why psychological injuries after car accidents are more common than many people realize
Early warning signs of trauma, including nightmares, hyperarousal, avoidance, and withdrawal
Why fear of driving after an accident can persist
The general one-month benchmark Dr. George uses when considering psychological evaluation
How PTSD and severe anxiety may affect pain and physical recovery
Why emotional symptoms can appear weeks after the original accident
How children may communicate trauma through behavioral regression or repetitive play
What family members can do to support someone recovering from trauma

Bonus: Workers Compensation Mistakes That Cost You Your Case
Wednesday, August 5, 2026 • Duration 27:02
Some conversations are worth hearing more than once. This is one of them.
We're bringing back this episode of Crashes, Claims & Clarity because the advice is just as important today as when it first aired. Workplace injuries happen every day, yet many people still don't understand how workers compensation works or the mistakes that can put their benefits and medical care at risk.
In this replay, attorney Darrell Burrow sits down with longtime Georgia workers compensation attorney Tom Holder, who has spent more than four decades representing injured workers. Together, they discuss what happens after a workplace injury, why reporting an injury immediately is so important, and the common misunderstandings that can create unnecessary challenges for injured employees.
Whether you're hearing this conversation for the first time or listening again, the information is just as valuable today.
In This Episode
→ Why reporting a workplace injury immediately matters
→ What workers compensation covers and what it doesn't
→ The difference between workers compensation and personal injury claims
→ Why delays in medical treatment can create bigger problems
→ Common mistakes injured workers make in the first few days after an accident
→ When it's time to seek experienced legal guidance
Why We're Sharing This Replay
Some episodes have a short shelf life. This isn't one of them.
The questions Tom answers are the same questions injured workers ask every day. If this episode helps even one person avoid a costly mistake after a workplace injury, it's worth bringing back.
Bonus: Teen Driving Safety Tips Every Parent Should Know
Thursday, July 30, 2026 • Duration 09:50
Handing a teenager the car keys means more than giving them freedom. It means preparing them for the responsibility and consequences that come with driving.
In this solo episode of Crashes, Claims & Clarity, Georgia attorney Darrell Burrow shares the essential conversations parents should have with teen drivers before they begin driving alone. Drawing on more than 30 years of experience handling automobile accidents, Darrell explains how parents can help teenagers recognize hazards, avoid distractions, understand insurance, and respond appropriately after a crash.
5 Key Takeaways
→ Teach teen drivers to look farther down the road instead of focusing only on the vehicle directly ahead
→ Help them understand how distraction from phones, music, friends, and passengers can change a life in seconds
→ Explain automobile insurance, including liability, collision, comprehensive, and uninsured motorist coverage
→ Contact your insurance carrier when your teenager becomes licensed to ensure they are properly listed and covered
→ Make sure your teenager knows to remain at the scene, call 911, request medical assistance when needed, take photographs, and provide only an accurate account of what happened
A driver’s license provides freedom, but it also carries serious responsibility. These conversations should begin during the learner’s permit stage, not after an accident happens.
If this episode was helpful, please like, follow, and share Crashes, Claims & Clarity with the parents of a new or future teen driver.
Bonus: Why Every Georgia Driver Should Have a Dash Cam
Thursday, July 23, 2026 • Duration 05:47
Why Every Georgia Driver Should Have a Dash Cam
Could a $35 dash cam save you thousands of dollars and protect you after an accident?
In this solo episode of Crashes, Claims & Clarity, Georgia personal injury attorney Darrell Burrow explains why he believes every driver should install a dash cam. After representing accident victims for decades, he's seen firsthand how quickly stories can change after a crash. A dash cam provides objective video evidence that can help establish exactly what happened.
Darrell discusses how dash cams can document collisions, expose insurance fraud, identify hit-and-run drivers, and provide valuable evidence about the force of an impact and how occupants moved inside the vehicle. He also answers common questions about Georgia law, including whether dash cams are legal and when footage can be used in court.
In this episode you'll learn:
• Why every Georgia driver should consider installing a dash cam
• How dash cam footage can help establish fault after an accident
• The growing number of hit-and-run crashes and why video evidence matters
• How dash cams can help protect against staged accidents and insurance fraud
• Whether dash cam footage is admissible in Georgia courts
• Georgia's rules for legally mounting and using a dash cam
