LeVar Love, principal owner of Rosie Investment Corporation, started flipping houses because he loved real estate. But it turned into much more - community development work in Chicago's South and West Sides. He partners with the city's Department of Housing to create affordable housing and help develop the local workforce. LeVar tells us stories about how his work impacts the community and how transforming abandoned properties into valuable assets benefits local residents. We talk about a project in Inglewood which led to him and his team being welcomed into the local community giving and long-term career development for apprentices. LeVar also talks about investing in himself, in knowledge and self-empowerment and how what we do and how we act influences our childrens’ futures..

In this Conversation About Power, I'm talking to Lisa Erickson.

Lisa is an author. She's a therapist. She's an expert in chakras and also in a technique called feeding your demons, which is a Tibetan Buddhist technique, which is an incredibly powerful way to transform your ideas about your own power.

I'm blown away by this technique. I've been reading about it over the last couple of weeks, so we'll be talking about this along with the main subject of today's episode: sexual trauma and how that affects your feeling of power.

Our sense of our own power has a lot to do with how much power we experience over our own bodies and the experiences that we have had in our bodies. That means, any kind of trauma that affects our bodies is going to affect our feeling of power, our feeling of authority over ourselves and our responses, the way that we deal with others.

So, this is a really relevant subject. We know that a lot of women and men experience sexual trauma, and we know that the effects live on for a long, long time. We’re talking about that during this episode, but we don't go into triggering details or specific situations, so you don't need to worry about that if you have been through sexual trauma yourself. If you have experienced sexual trauma, then I encourage you to take this episode in, in your own way, and see what resonates for you.

As I say, it's a big episode. It's an important subject, and it's something that we need to talk about.

Since then, she's expanded her ideas about forgiveness. Now she looks even deeper than before. Forgiveness isn’t just about the two parties involved in a situation, but also what’s happening with the people around them and what's caused that situation.

Brownell shares how we can use forgiveness as a tool to improve not only our own lives, but the lives of others that we may not even ever have met.
