Stephan shares his theories on non-local consciousness and discusses the idea that space-time arises from consciousness, not vice versa. He also goes in-depth on his firsthand experience working with remote viewing as a researcher and practitioner himself. The three also discuss the many parallels between different religions and their access points to the “soul” or continuity of consciousness through gathering, intention, ritual, and meditation. Stephan Schwartz is a Distinguished Consulting Faculty of Saybrook University, a Fellow of the William James Center for Consciousness Studies, Sofia University, and a Research Associate of the Cognitive Sciences Laboratory of the Laboratories for Fundamental Research.  For 40 years he has been studying the nature of consciousness, particularly that aspect independent of space and time. Schwartz is part of the small group that founded modern Remote Viewing research, and is the principal researcher studying the use of Remote Viewing in archaeology. They discuss how he became the only recipient of a doctoral diploma in parapsychology at UC Berkeley, the different planes of hyperspace, and higher dimensions of existence - and the many ways humans experience and investigate them. Jeffrey Mishlove is a licensed clinical psychologist, an accomplished radio and television interviewer, and one of the most erudite and articulate personalities on television. Jeffrey holds the only doctoral diploma in parapsychology to be awarded by an accredited American university (University of California, Berkeley). A revision of his doctoral dissertation, Psi Development Systems, was released in 1988 as a Ballantine paperback. This book evaluates methods purported to train psychic abilities. He is also author of The PK Man. He is the author of an encyclopedic volume of consciousness studies, The Roots of Consciousness. Dr. Mishlove is a past director of the Association for Humanistic Psychology, and has served as President of the Intuition Network.  Jeffrey teaches parapsychology to ministers in training with the Centers for Spiritual Living (formerly the Church of Religious Science) through their Holmes Institute. Karina joined Marco’s band in 2016 to replace Dave Dreiwitz, and in the many tours since then, she has developed a permanent and powerful presence in the band. Steve has an incredibly unique perspective of the band due to his role between the stage and the audience, and in this conversation you’ll hear all about his wild ride with the Grateful Dead.  Steve Parish has been a primary member of the Grateful Dead family for over 50 years. He first joined the band as a roadie in 1969, but it wasn’t long before he became Jerry Garcia’s trusted gear handler and began to manage the Jerry Garcia Band. Over the years, Parish and Garcia forged an unbreakable bond. Steve was Jerry’s best man at his wedding, and was at his bedside when Garcia fell into a coma in 1986. Parish was the last friend to see Jerry before his untimely death in 1995, but has continued to maintain his relationships with the rest of the Grateful Dead family. In 2017 Steve started Grizzly Peak, a California-based cannabis company that grows pesticide-free, premium cannabis flower. He remained on the faculty at Harvard for two years prior to moving to New York City to further pursue his interest in psychedelic medicine as a practitioner and public advocate through speaking, writing, and social media. He is an advisor to Bexson Biomedical and People Science, and a co-principal investigator on a pilot research study exploring MDMA-assisted psychotherapy for the treatment of fibromyalgia. Will has been trained by MAPS to provide MDMA-assisted therapy, and maintains a private practice in Los Angeles where he provides individual psychotherapy and ketamine-facilitated psychotherapy. He approaches his work with the goal of lasting, patient-centered healing—using his skills and experience to help his clients find healing within themselves. The final film was released this year, 2021. That's ultimately the outcome.” - Alex Peavey This week, Oteil and Mike talk with Alex Peavey, a mindfulness consultant and the Team Consultant and Mindfulness Coach for VCU Men’s Basketball. Alex reached out as a listener of the podcast, sharing what a refuge the show has been throughout his battle with cancer. In this episode, Alex shares how he got into meditation and what role the practice has played in his life after his cancer diagnosis. They discuss the process of conceptualizing and emotionally processing your own mortality, along with different approaches to doing so. He has been practicing mindfulness since the age of 15, and with the knowledge that it can cultivate peace of mind as well as peak performance, Alex has been teaching these techniques to others for over a decade. In addition to introducing mindfulness to the students, faculty, and parents at Collegiate School, Alex has brought it to “Mindful Mondays” at the Cameron K Gallagher Foundation, colleges and universities across the state, regional and international conferences, correctional facilities, corporations, and the federal government. After almost a lifetime of practicing mindfulness, Alex found these strategies to be of the utmost importance last March when he was diagnosed with stage 4 prostate cancer.
