CLR-E96: Making Espresso at Home26 Jul 201800:35:06

Espresso is one of those coffee brewing methods which looks awesome, and is delicious, but turns out to be a crazy amount of effort. Most of the time, we'll just go to a cafe to get our espresso, because the coffee will be freshest, and the trained baristas will prepare it the best. But on the other hand, there are ways to make pretty darn good espresso drinks at home - and that is one of the most satisfying feelings...

I made an error in my price statement of the Barista Touch during the show - it's actually $1200, not $2100 - making it an incredibly good deal.

Thanks to Breville for providing the Breville Barista Touch for us to enjoy and share with you.

CLR-E94: Iced Pourover vs Coldwave - Which is Better?12 Jul 201800:14:49

It's summertime and that mean's it's high time for iced coffee! Jesse and I take a look again at the Coldwave, this time we put it head to head against our traditional favorite iced coffee brewing method, the iced pour-over, also known as 'Japanese iced method.'

While the Coldwave has stormed onto the scene as one of the favorites due to being able to make iced coffee from any brew with zero dilution, we discovered some surprising delights from the iced pour over that you just don't get in the coldwave.

In this show, Jesse and Joseph get into the idea of being a 'coffee connoisseur.'

CLR-E85: The Monk of Mokha24 Feb 201800:14:07

3 Years ago, I published an awesome story about a guy who had dedicated his life to saving Yemeni coffee. Through the years since, Jesse and I have enjoyed many opportunities to talk about and share Yemen coffee and the work of Mokhtar Alkhanshali. Now his story is immortalized in the work of Dave Eggers, in the book titles 'The Monk of Mokha.'

In this episode, we recall the early years of sharing Mokhtar's story, meeting him, and our experiences with Yemen coffee.

CLR-E84: Does This Really Upgrade Your French Press?15 Feb 201800:21:18

In the wake of heightened attention on a particular coffee brewing video of Coffee Lovers TV, Jesse and I explore the 'polished' French Press brewing method. We do a side by side brew of a regular French Press and the augmented version, explaining what it is and how the coffee result differs.

We also talk about people's attitudes towards this method. The particular video in question received a remarkably polarized reaction, with commenters either loving or hating it - so we explored this dynamic a little bit as well.

CLR-E83: Does Dark Roast Warp Your Sense of Taste?01 Feb 201800:20:24

In this show, Jesse and Joseph throw some ideas back and forth about the effect that dark roast has on your ability to taste. This is following a Cup of Joe episode where Joseph explored the idea that drinking exclusively dark roast for a long time can warp your ability to taste medium and lighter coffees.

CLR-E82: The Bloom - Brewing Experiments23 Jan 201800:18:34

One standard rule when it comes to brewing pour over coffee is to let it bloom for 30 seconds. The bloom is the releasing of gasses at the beginning of the brew.

Typically you would add 1:1 or 2:1 water to grounds, let the gasses release for 30-45 seconds, and then brew with the rest of your water.

Well a happy accident one day revealed a delicious result by significantly extending the brew...

So on this show, Jesse and I compare a 4 minute bloom and 30 second bloom.

Is there a difference? Find out...

CLR-E81: The Moccamaster19 Dec 201700:15:38

Automated drip machines are often frowned upon by coffee geeks. This is for very good reason in the grand scheme of things. Most can't consistently brew a really great cup of coffee.

The Moccamaster is one of the great exceptions - as an SCA certified brewer, it produces really great cups of coffee every time. It's one of our favorite automated brewing machines for home use, so we decided to share it with you on the show.

CLR-E79: The Oxo Barista Brain Brewer24 Oct 201700:21:25

Though hand-brewing coffee is an amazing (and for us on the show here preferred) way of making our coffee, most people prefer and auto drip machine for ease of use and amount of brew made. The problem is most auto drip machines don't make a very good cup of coffee (hence one of the reasons many of us prefer hand brewing). On this show, Jesse and I play around with an SCA certified auto drip machine The Oxo Barista Brain Brewer. Find out what we think about it...

CLR-E78: Chill Out with Iced Coffee05 Sep 201700:20:15

With a summer of hot hot days, we find ourselves frequently enjoying a nice refreshing cold coffee. Yet there are multiple ways to make cold coffee, and all of them imperfect. Or are they?

On this show we talk about the classic cold brew, and how Jesse makes it en masse for his customers. We also get into other classic ways of making and enjoying iced coffee.

Finally, we welcome Ryan McDonnell who is with IceColdNow, and we take a quick look at their new Coldwave Coffee Chiller. Instead of brewing cold, or brewing on to ice, you brew coffee regularly and then flash chill it in this simply designed product.

CLR-E74: The Show is Coming25 Apr 201700:17:22

But for now, you get to hear us talk about the show that's coming but which has already transpired. Still, the things we paint in this show will inform the next, and I think it's entertaining.
