Great Movie Endings06 Sep 202201:00:23

The End Is Nigh! Well, for Cine-Lit it is at least. For this final episode in an almost three-year run, including over 70 podcasts on a crazy range of subjects, we are bringing the curtain down on Cine-Lit. But we couldn't go out with a whimper when we could go out with a bang. Adam and Darrel sit down and talk about Great Movie Endings. And of course, with a great movie ending, there is always the possibility of a great movie resurrection...

Hammer Horror - Unmade Hammer Part 210 May 202200:51:23

Cine-Lit continues its adventures in "What If" country as we explore the unmade Hammer projects that were announced, mooted and, in some cases, scripted films, but that languish in the might-have-been archives. In this instalment, we look at the various attempts to bring more vampires back to Hammer with proposed new Count Dracula adventures, an unconventional biopic of Bram Stoker, and attempts to bring to the screen one of the most famous vampires from the world of comics. Also, we talk about the pitch and poster to bring Scotland's most infamous aquatic monster Nessie to the big screen.

After covering the Count from Transylvania and Mary Shelley's monstrous creation, Cine-Lit once again cracks open the vault of horror from that most British of institutions, Hammer Films. This time we venture into parts unknown, into a multiverse of Hammer as we discuss a range of much-muted but never completed Hammer productions. In this instalment we discuss an unmade fourth Dick Barton, a non-Nigel Kneale Quatermass, a Richard Matheson scripted I Am Legend, a return to Denis Wheatley's world of the occult, Zeppelins Vs. Pterodactyls and a Hammer take on Cinema's biggest star, King Kong.

David Lean is one of Britain's most celebrated filmmakers, the master of the epic with such classics as Bridge On The River Kwai, Lawrence of Arabia and Doctor Zhivago. But ever the contrarians, Cine-Lit heads back before Lean started to go epic with a pair of films based on the works of Charles Dickens that are among the best ever adapted for film. Adam, Darrell and Rebecca take a closer look at Great Expectations (1946) and Oliver Twist (1948).

The Trouble With Harry (1955) & The Wrong Man (1956)30 Aug 202200:54:23

Alfred Hitchcock made some of the most well-respected films of all time, Vertigo currently tops the Sight and Sound list of the 100 Greatest Films of All Time but what about some of Hitch's lesser works? Adam and Darrell take a look at two films shot and released during a particularly purple patch for the director. In the midst of films like Rear Window, Vertigo, North By Northwest and Psycho, these two films seem to stand out like criminals in an identity parade. One is a black comedy while the other is based on a true story and leans heavily into film noir. Join us as we talk about Harry and Manny in The Trouble With Harry (1955) and The Wrong Man (1956).

The Scream Franchise11 Jan 202201:23:44

"Do you like scary movies?" In 1996 people didn't until Scream came along and reignited a stale mainstream horror scene. Birthing not just 3 sequels and a spinoff television series Scream also brought the slasher film into the 90s with a string of slashers filling cinema screens. Now in 2022, as the franchise is getting a sequel/relaunch with a new film, Cine-Lit delves into its history ahead of the latest appearance of Ghostface.

Robert Rodriguez's Mexico Trilogy28 Dec 202100:48:57

Just in time for Robert Rodriguez's entry into the Star Wars universe with new Boba Fett series, Cine-Lit takes a look at the birth of Rodriguez's career and the trilogy that established him as a Hollywood director. We look at the lengths Rodriguez went to scramble together the $7000 dollar budget for El Mariachi, to becoming part of a cool indie cinema clique with Quentin Tarantino in the mid 90s, launching the Hollywood careers of Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek before rounding off his trilogy with Once Upon A Time In Mexico (2003), co-starring Johnny Depp.

Biopics16 Nov 202101:00:19

As cinemas are currently revisiting the early 90s with Pablo Larrain's Spencer, we thought it would be a good time to take a look at the genre of the Biopic. A perennial favourite with filmmakers, audiences and Oscar voters, the Biopic is a unique genre of cinema that casts its net over the wealth of human experience, and includes lots of famous people playing other famous people.

When Musicians Act29 Jun 202101:10:00

Some musicians take to acting like a duck to water... but then others hit the water and sink fast! For this episode of Cine-Lit, Adam and Darrell are joined by Rob Lane of the Straight To Video podcast (and an actual musician!) to talk about some of the best (and worst) examples of musicians attempting the crossover into acting.

Steve Martin & Carl Reiner01 Jun 202101:06:21

Join Adam and Darrell as they explore what made this partnership so special and led to the creation of The Jerk (1979), Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid (1982), The Man With Two Brains (1983) and All Of Me (1984).

Kathleen Turner18 May 202100:46:29

For this podcast Adam and Darrell take a look at the film career of Kathleen Turner. She arrived on the film scene in 1981 and was an immediate success establishing her as an A-List actor.

From the smouldering sexuality of Body Heat, to the mousey romance novelist of Romancing The Stone and outrageous roles for Ken Russell and John Waters, Turner has had a career that should be the envy of most Hollywood A-Listers.

The Crime Films Of Walter Matthau04 May 202100:52:24

Cine-Lit heads back to the crime vault for this latest podcast.

Cine-Lit looks at this short blip (Charley Varrick, The Laughing Policeman and The Taking Of Pelham 123) in closer detail.

Norman J. Warren20 Apr 202100:56:19

Adam and Darrell delve into the films of Norman J. Warren for this episode of the Cine-Lit podcast.

Norman passed away in March 2021 so we thought it was only right to pay homage and look at the man who was, in many ways, a one-man British Horror Industry in the late 70s/early 80s.

Norman was a regular at film festivals over the past thirty years where he was a familiar face and often challenged for the title of Nicest Man in Horror.

Ray Harryhausen06 Apr 202101:08:25

After a couple of podcasts wrestling with cinema's greatest monsters, Adam and Darrell face down another Titan of Monster Cinema. Ray Harryhausen had a magical career bringing stop-motion life to films like the Sinbad trilogy, Mighty Joe Young, Clash Of The Titans, Hammer's One Million Years B.C. and the legendary Jason and the Argonauts.

Sure, the actors played their part but you were really paying to see such cinematic monsters like The Kraken, The Hydra, sword-wielding skeletons, Gwangi, Mighty Joe Young and, of course, the snake-haired Medusa.

KONG!09 Feb 202101:08:25

Cine-Lit tackles the biggest leading man in cinema history as Adam and Darrell take a look at the legacy of King Kong!

Following on from the podcast on RKO earlier last year, they look at the sequels, spin offs, Japanese Kaiju Kong films, the remakes and the new Kong films in Legendary's Monsterverse cinematic shared universe.

Taking the new publication "Giant Monsters Of Filmland" (co-edited by a certain Cine-Lit podcaster) as a launching point, this jaunt through the history of Kong coincides nicely with with the upcoming release Godzilla Vs King Kong.

Oscar Rewind - The Year 197626 Jan 202100:56:42

Normally at this time of year, Adam, Darrell and Rebekah would be discussing the Oscar nominations - the films that (deservedly or otherwise) were nominated and those that were overlooked. But because 2020 was… well, 2020, the Oscars for this year have been postponed.

So this month the team are looking back to the year which produced arguably the strongest ever line-up of Best Picture nominees - 1976.

Rocky, Taxi Driver, Network, Bound For Glory and All The President's Men - any of these films would have been a worthy winner.

The team discuss the films in turn, how they relate to each other, how they were all commenting on US society and politics of the time, and how they stand up today.

Paracinema Film Festival - Exit with Director Michael Fausti24 Nov 202000:48:54

As Paracinema barrells towards it's conclusion, Adam and Darrell catch up with Michael Fausti, director of Exit.

Exit bowled over the Paracinema selection committee with its style, confidence and mesmerising performances. An erotic horror thriller that leaves you with as many questions after you've watched it as you have going in, it impressed Darrell so much that he compared it favourably with David Lynch.

Exit screens at the Paracinema Film Festival website until midnight on Thursday and is also available on special edition Blu-ray directly from the Fausti Films website.
