S6 EP97: Part 2 Don't Be Like a City Without Walls - Self-control [FOTS]

Season 2 · Episode 97

mercredi 11 décembre 2024Duration 48:32

The fruit of the spirit of self-control, like love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, are all matters of the heart. There is never a time where a believer is 100% good at loving others, 100% good at having joy, 100% good at living in peace etc… Cultivation is everyday intentional work. You may not be able to fully master self-control on this side of eternity but it is in your best interest as a child of God to start an intentional heart work.

Three thoughts from this episode:

  1. It is not difficult to be self-controlled but it is difficult to deny self from our cravings, guilty pleasures, vices, desires, wants, gratifications. That is why we do not use behavior modification to address heart habits that take the gentle and constant illumination of the Word of God in our hearts. We cannot be in control of the work and expect the Holy Spirit to be in control. For there to be a mastering of this Fruit, we must allow the Spirit to take control and we obey, even when the obedience means temporary discomfort. Remember, the temporary discomfort shall yield permanent joy of the Lord.
  2. Self-control is deeper and broader than willpower. Willpower can take you to the steps of the staircase but to climb the staircase with focus, precision, perseverance, you need self-control. Packed in that self-control will be patience, gentleness, humility, joy, and freedom. Go after self-control, and don’t give up until you have achieved this goal. It is pleasing to the Lord.
  3. You cannot master self-control without releasing strongholds from your heart and mind. Where there is a yoke of slavery to sin, there is a lack of self-control. And we have all fallen short of the glory of God, and are justified freely by His grace through the redemption that came from Jesus Christ. Your heart is not perfect, it is not ok, it needs God everyday. Don’t let the devil deceive you.

Here are some coaching questions to ponder on about Self-control:

  • Do I believe that I can master self-control and be made perfect when I meet Jesus someday?
  • What are my ungodly habits, actions, thought patterns?
  • Which of the ways in cultivating self-control can I begin practicing more of?

S5 EP86: Dr. Fran Abanyie - Out of the Goodness of Your Heart

Season 5 · Episode 86

mercredi 18 septembre 2024Duration 01:05:27

Dr. Francisca Abanyie, affectionately known as Dr. Fran is a Public Health Physician who serves as the Deputy Director of the Commissioned Corps Liaison Office at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. Dr. Abanyie is a Pediatric Infectious Diseases physician who earned her undergraduate degree with Honors in Chemistry from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey; her medical degree from University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey's Robert Wood Johnson Medical School (UMDNJ-RWJMS), now Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School; and her Master of Public Health degree with summa cum laude distinction from UMDNJ's School of Public Health (UMDNJ-SPH), now Rutgers School of Public Health. Dr. Abanyie went on to complete her General Pediatric Residency at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children in Philadelphia, PA, followed by her Pediatric Infectious Diseases fellowship at Emory University School of Medicine. She is also a graduate of Atlanta’s Federal Executive Board’s Leadership Government Program that focuses on developing leadership skills with special emphasis on building the five Executive Core Qualifications and is a Certified Life and Career Coach and Lean Six Sigma Green Belt.

Dr. Fran is passionate about mentoring the younger generation and is a purpose-driven life and career coach. She is enthusiastic about philanthropic efforts and aspires to build a hospital in her hometown of Cape Coast, Ghana. She currently serves as the President of the Ghana Physicians & Surgeons Foundation, an organization set up over 20 years ago to support the mission of the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons based in Ghana by engaging in advocacy, education and programmatic events that advance the public health of Ghanaians in Ghana as well as in the North America Diaspora. She is also the owner of Flavors from Fran’s Kitchen (3FK), an online bakery best known for their premium coconut shortbread cookies that will have your taste buds dance for joy and make you feel like royalty.

In this episode, Dr. Fran shares her spiritual and relational insights about life through the goodness of God. You will learn from Dr. Fran that:

  • True goodness is about putting others first in spite of life’s challenges
  • You must analyze what others say about you in the presence of Jesus so He shows you what is true and what is not
  • Goodness requires intentional practice and passing of tests that the Lord brings your way through people
  • Goodness is about the selfless care for others
  • You must get out of your own way and see, know the essence of who you are
  • You must learn to put forth goodness with no expectations
  • To cultivate the character goodness, you must take time to know and hear God’s heart
  • Get the inpouring from God so you can pour out to others
  • You must desire the Fruit of the Spirit; it is all one fruit. Desire it, do the work.
  • Here’s your formula for cultivating this fruit: “Dear Lord, despite this/my situation, I will trust and obey you”

Questions to ponder on:

  • How has your life been transformed by the goodness of a friend or loved one?
  • How can you show goodness to others despite your own life situation?
  • If the essence of the character of goodness is holiness, then in what ways can you be intentional about cultivating goodness today?

The formula that Dr. Fran shares is one that requires a partnership with the Holy Spirit. Without the Holy Spirit, our fruit is fake [see FOS introductory episodes]. The Lord is holy and those who worship Him must do so in spirit and in truth. When we learn to desire the character of Jesus, we begin to develop satisfaction in God alone. That satisfaction is where true joy of the Lord resides and so does goodness of the heart. Out of the goodness of God’s heart, we are blessed. Pass it on!

S5 EP85: The Goodness of God [FOTS]

Season 5 · Episode 85

mercredi 14 août 2024Duration 57:23

Here are three thoughts from today's episode:

  1. Our idea and understanding of God’s goodness as believers, humans is merely scratching the surface of this rich attribute of God. Goodness or being good is a high moral standard outwardly expressed when you show kindness to someone. Goodness in God’s standards is being holy, just as Jesus corrected the rich young man “only God is good”, because the heart of man needs much work to attain that level of purity God desires from us.
  2. By the power of the Holy Spirit, we can walk in an intentional pursuit of goodness. We must direct our heart and mind toward Jesus and be obedient to all that He wants to teach and show us. Jesus tells us that the Holy Spirit will teach us all things. When the teaching happens, it is our duty to practice it, put our faith into action so we do not become dull, stale, dead.
  3. A big aspect of goodness is extending grace to others. God is gracious to us, and all throughout the Israelites journey, we see that his grace was sufficient for them when manna was provided through when they entered the promised land. When you are unable to extend grace to others, it is time to truly check the status of your E.G.O and ask yourself, am I extending Grace Onto others?

Here are some coaching questions to ponder on about goodness:

  • Understanding what goodness is today, if Jesus were to look into my heart, which would he see more of - Kindness or goodness or both?
  • Who is God asking you to be good toward today [show the characteristics of a holy saint]
  • Do I have the joy of [knowing and understanding who God is to me] and do I accept and believe in him steadfastly?

S5 EP84: Akia Campbell - God's Kindness Inspired Me to Shift

Season 5 · Episode 84

mercredi 24 juillet 2024Duration 44:00

Akia is a Woman of Faith in Christ, who started off with a mustard seed of faith when she took her first major step in 2015. Born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri, Akia moved to Houston, Texas, in February 2015. Not knowing that her life would be forever changed and transformed for God’s Glory. She is a daughter, aunt, sister, and friend to many. She has walked in the paths of accounting, personal development, life coaching, and various forms of leadership. She is a soon to be published author of her first book The Preparation. As of March 2020, Akia resides in Atlanta, Georgia.

In this episode, Akia shares her story of experiencing God’s kindness in a season of abandonment and how that attribute of God has helped her transform and make major life shifts. You will learn from Akia that:

  • A mustard seed of faith takes you to your blessing
  • You are capable of moving from the ‘job years’ to ‘jubilee years’
  • There is power in our “yes” to the Lord especially during those ‘job years’
  • Your job years of stripping creates spaces for God’s pruning and purification of your heart, mind, soul
  • God’s kindness is choosing us and clothing us in righteousness
  • Kindness is selfless love, an opportunity to be spirit-led
  • Kindness that is spirit-led often moves us out of our comfort zone
  • Assess your story in the presence of the Holy Spirit
  • Meet Jesus daily before you meet others; this way you pour from a full cup within your spirit and soul

Questions to ponder on:

  • How has a spirit-led kindness from another person impacted your life?
  • In moments of discomfort, how can you activate kindness towards others?
  • In what ways is God asking you to show kindness today?

Kindness that is spirit-led positions our hearts to help others and ask questions later. We are quick to obey the prompting even when we are being inconvenienced. Because your whole being is rooted in Christ, you believe that He who has called you to this fruit of Kindness and all other Fruit of the Spirit is faithful, and He will do it. God is your great Provider, sovereign. Show kindness to others even when you don’t understand.

S5 EP83: This is Your Next Level Kindness [FOTS]

Season 5 · Episode 83

mercredi 10 juillet 2024Duration 58:43

Here are three thoughts from today:

- A daily practice of self-reflection will lead your heart to explore how you express goodness and generosity to others in your communities. Kindness is about that goodness, that love expressed. We experience God’s goodness, He wants us to pay it forward.

- There is a difference between being kind and being nice. Also, kindness that places an expected response from the receiver is not a genuine Fruit of the Spirit. And we must be cautious of our heart’s posture when we are offering to do things for people.

- Being kind in friendship is a cherished act of love and we need more of this. Friends that can lay aside their agendas and be there with you and for you. To have a friend like this you need to be a friend like this. The goal is to look to Jesus to teach you how to be that friend and you just be. No expectations, just transformation.

Here are some coaching questions to ponder on about your kindness:

  1. Who has been kind to me lately? How did their kindness make my heart feel?
  2. Who is God drawing my heart to show kindness to?
  3. How can I be more attentive to the Holy Spirit’s promptings to show kindness to people I do not know? How do I show such kindness?

S5 EP81: Waiting On and For the Lord - Patience [FOTS]

Season 5 · Episode 81

mercredi 12 juin 2024Duration 01:07:50

Here are three thoughts from this episode:

  1. Patience is a virtue, and most importantly, it is a characteristic of the Fruit of the Spirit. You have the Spirit of God in you; therefore, you are a new creation, your old ways have passed away. You have every spiritual capacity to develop a heart of patience.
  2. Developing or cultivating a heart of patience requires time. Become more cognizant of your behaviors and habits as well as your surroundings. Self-reflection is great practice to engage in often. You can do this through journaling and audio essays where you verbally record your day and the Fruit of the Spirit you felt challenged by.
  3. Bearing the fruit of patience is a daily practice of allowing the Lord to lead and guide you. Remember, if you disregard the Lord’s guidance, you are disobeying Him and that in itself is a sin. His command is that you wait on Him and wait for Him. Do just that in prayer and with joy and watch what happens in time.

S5 EP80: Guest Shade' Her Place of Inner Peace

Season 5 · Episode 80

mercredi 22 mai 2024Duration 01:07:23

Shade’ is an author, a motivational speaker and mentor passionately committed to helping people by motivating them to believe and live again no matter how life may have dragged them down. She believes that even when life knocks us down, we still need to dig deep within, and search out what will inspire, that would move you from that deep, dark place to where you are supposed to be. She inspires using the scriptures as the backbone to all her inspiration. Shade' knows first hand what it feels like to be knocked down by life's challenges and she also knows that understanding the power of the word and positive thinking is the main key that can change every situation. She understands that it takes courage to get back up again after life has dragged you down. Shade's life passion is to work to encourage and inspire others to live again and enjoy life.

In this episode, Shade’ shares her story and journey to finding inner peace through one constant practice - prayer. You will learn from Shade’ that:

  • Your place of prayer is a place of peace (Read Isaiah 51:10)
  • Peace is that inner knowing that God is there for you
  • When you are tired and overwhelmed, peace can be far from your heart but when you pray, prayer stills your heart in the presence of God
  • When your mind is running many miles an hour, pause, yield your heart to the Lord
  • You walk in perfect peace by being still, silent, and taking a reset
  • Your reset is being still and knowing
  • Where there is trust, there is peace

Questions to ponder on:

  • How do you walk in perfect peace?
  • What does being out of peace look like to you?
  • Where there is trust, there is peace. What does your heart say about this when the Word says “trust in the Lord with all your heart…”
