Surviving the Teenage Dog Years: Understanding Canine Adolescence
vendredi 21 novembre 2025 • Duration 24:56
In this episode, Kim and Carla dive deep into one of the most misunderstood stages of a dog’s life — adolescence. Often arriving between 6 and 14 months, this phase brings big feelings, big behaviours, and, for many owners, big challenges. It’s also the age when dogs are most frequently relinquished to shelters, highlighting just how important support during this time really is.
Kim and Carla break down why adolescence is nothing like puppyhood, despite many owners expecting it to get easier. From sudden “naughtiness” to lead pulling, reduced focus, and increased independence, they explain why this developmental stage mirrors human teenage behaviour and why patience and consistency are key.
They discuss the common gap between completing a puppy course and the ongoing training adolescents desperately need — sharing personal stories with their own dogs, Millie and Sam. Together, they explore fear phases, training dips, and why neutering during adolescence can sometimes make things worse.
Listeners will learn practical, positive tools including the Counting Game, Middle position, and hand targets, along with how to use breed-appropriate outlets, long lines, and sniffing freedom to support adolescent dogs.
Whether you’re a dog owner or trainer, this episode will help you understand the why behind adolescent behaviours — and give you the guidance to support dogs through this turbulent but temporary stage.
Finding the Balance: Flexible Routines for Real-Life Dog Training
vendredi 14 novembre 2025 • Duration 29:12
In this episode, Kim and Carla dive into the real-world challenges of fitting dog training into busy, unpredictable lives. From juggling work shifts and family commitments to managing the routines of reactive or anxious dogs, they explore how flexibility—not rigid schedules—is the key to long-term success.
Kim shares how she adapts training plans to fit seamlessly into her clients’ existing lifestyles rather than adding more structure, while Carla highlights the benefits of short, frequent sessions over long training blocks. Together, they discuss how to generalize skills across different environments, prepare dogs for life transitions (like new babies or moves), and strike the perfect balance between consistency and adaptability.
Whether you’re a professional trainer or a devoted dog owner, this episode offers practical strategies to help you build routines that work for both ends of the lead. 🐾

dimanche 14 septembre 2025 • Duration 36:29
In this episode of The Happy Dog Podcast, Kim is joined by Danny from Tug-E-Nuff to dive into the world of dog play, toys, and training. Together, Kim and Danny explore what makes a great dog toy, from safe designs that engage puppies and children to innovative products like their floating water toy “Bob.” They discuss how play isn’t just fun — it’s a powerful training tool that can help dogs settle, reduce frustration, and strengthen the bond with their humans.
From practical tips on choosing the right toy and adapting play styles to your dog’s breed, to the role of play in puppy training and lifelong learning, this episode is packed with insights for every dog owner. Whether you’re new to tug games or looking to make training more engaging, you’ll come away inspired to put more play into your dog’s day.

The fallout of punishment with Sophie and Riyukta
dimanche 9 octobre 2022 • Duration 01:20:43
When I approached Sophie about coming on to our podcast to chat about the fallout of using punishment in behavioural modification I could not image that she would be able to have a client who used a shock collar on their dog who would be willing to chat on the podcast.
This is a fascinating insight into why people choose to use punitive methods on their dogs and the fallout from using these.
I don't want to give too much away but I really hope you enjoy this chat.

The problem with punishment
samedi 1 octobre 2022 • Duration 33:17
It is no surprise that I advocated for the use of positive reinforcement as much as possible when it comes to dog training. But I felt it was time to go in depth about why I promote this method of training as much as possible - so here we go! A deep dive into why I don't like punishment.
A few things that I went through in the podcast that you might want to have more information about:
Milgrams experiment: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milgram_experiment
I can't find the video I was looking for on shock collars but I will share it on my social media if I can find it.

Introduction to learning theory - operant conditioning
samedi 24 septembre 2022 • Duration 26:33
Last week we discussed learning that happens without us even having to think about it - which has its good and bad sides.
This week we are thinking more about intentional learning, where we are actively teaching our dogs through the consequences of their actions.
It is a controversial topic in dog training, one which we are going to get into more and more over the next few weeks.
I'm sure you have questions about this way of learning and teaching so send them over to my instagram: @pooches.galore

Understanding the foundation of dog training: classical conditioning
samedi 17 septembre 2022 • Duration 26:01
Before we get into how to train dogs we have to understand the foundation of all learning, in all organisms from the smallest amoeba to humans and that is classical conditioning.
This is reflexive learning and is vital to all animals learning and survival.
Understand this first and then we can work on more complex training next week.
