| Mad Haters; Adventures in Wellness-Land with writer, author Cecile Simmons | 16 Jul 2025 | 01:20:26 | |
I was first introduced to Cecile Simmons from her essay on being an expert on wellness misinformation and yet falling down a rabbit hole of social media fueled wellness trends even as she knew she was being duped. After that I was hooked (relatable!). We talk about the upsetting relationship between wellness, misinformation/disinformation and politics. In a world filled with conflicting information and the political agendas that shape wellness, the need for a balanced approach to health that prioritizes genuine well-being over societal pressures is even more needed.Cecile's book Ctrl Delete Hate is out now - get it HEREFind Cecile Simmons work HERE and HERE I’ve written about ‘eating a lot’ here Guacamole Fulfillment And how not all poor mental health is ‘bad’ - enjoy! I’m so happy to share this conversation that is a bit more personal as Susanna and I discuss her memoir and the intersection of our childhood experiences. Susanna grew up in a Utopian experiment in the UK. I grew up with a bunch of artists experiencing near constant accident, divorce, and trauma. Neither of us had adults around who guided or protected us very much in our childhoods. Susanna has written an incredible book, articulating with an eye that goes back and forth in time, what that felt like as a child and teen and now, as an adult engaged and empowered in her own life, what our childhood means to us as adults. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did. | MORE PLEASE on memoir, growing up and being young with Author and journalist Emma Specter | 20 Nov 2024 | 01:02:08
Thrilled to open the latest season of Busy Body in conversation with Emma Specter. We discuss her new book, her memoir, More, Please on Food, Fat, Bingeing, Longing and the Lust for 'Enough'. More, Please, reads like a bright, light, young-ambitious-woman-coming-of-age-in-the-big-city, albeit with a parallel life of addiction and self harm (because isn't that the truth behind those stories anyway??). It is extraordinarily relatable, funny, painful, insightful and ultimately not only hopeful but inspiring.Personally I think everyone should read first person account of living with ED, whether you think you have one or not, that being said, Eating Disorders are discussed so proceed with caution if that might be upsetting for you. It's hard to be upset around Emma Specter though, her expansive perspective on life is infectious.Emma Specter is a Vogue Culture WriterFind Emma's other writing HERE and her IG HERE If you like the pod please rate review and subscribe wherever you get your podcasts! | Done That, Choosing Not To | 20 Sep 2024 | 01:08:20
Quick news - If you want to work with me in the fitness space - Virtual Run Club enrollment opens Monday and my Self Paced Series also go on a little fall sale on Monday as well, to assist the people who like to take part in both :) I’m also teaching a special Master Class version of the Monthly Fascia Release™ workshop tomorrow Sat, Sept 21st 4-5:15PM EST all about POSTURE - sitting standing and walking posture. We will do all our self massage love but we will also tie it into our daily life skeletal structure. Don’t miss it if you’ve ever had complaints about your own posture 💖 The Episode: I'm so excited to finally have this episode out. Alex Auder is an actor, a writer and an incredible Yoga Teacher, part of a very specific OG niche of the NY Yoga scene. Her book, Don't Call Me Home is out now. This episode gets both personal and very NY-yoga-world-insider-y as she and I reminisce about our beginnings in the movement world, the loose boundaries of our childhood upbringings, and a topic I've been desperate to discuss - how any of us can practice Yoga when pretty much every major Yoga teacher has been "Me-too-ed". Also please forgive that the first 20 minutes of the episode, Alex's mic wasn't connecting so she sounds a bit muffled, my producer hopped on and fixed it, and the rest of the interview she's crystal clear. Alex is a brilliant, hilarious, wonderful guest and the author of the memoir, Don't Call Me Home. I highly recommend it and her extremely rare classes that pop up at Kula Yoga. You can also follow Alex on her Instagram account where hopefully she will grace us with more performance art soon. I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I did. As always please subscribe, like, share and leave a review. It helps get this podcast listened to. On the newest episode of BUSY BODY, I interview Martha Hudson of Luv Martha Swim. She creates size + gender inclusive custom bikinis and swimwear. | Financially Fit with Financial Gym Founder Shannon Mclay Pt 1 | 17 Apr 2024 | 00:51:18
This episode is a little departure from our physical bodies.. I wanted to interview Shannon McLay, founder and CEO of Financial Gym. Financial Gym is a completely unique company that I wish existed when I first opened my business. FinGym aims to help people become 'financially fit' no matter their income or current debt. Personally, I am incredibly grateful for the support I've received from FinGym and because so many of us struggle with our relationship to money, just as we do with food or our bodies ...and these struggles are actually so often inter-connected.. I wanted to have Shannon on to encourage more conversation around this tricky topic. | Creative Fitness with Writer (and my half-brother), Andre Dubus III | 27 Mar 2024 | 01:04:40
Fitness runs in my family, as does insomnia, anxiety and self punishment. I’m thrilled I was finally able to get my exceptionally talented, exceptionally busy half-brother scheduled for an interview. His ongoing relationship with his body and creative output was always part of my experience of what ‘working out’ meant. Instead of mirrored gyms and fancy lycra, fitness in my family was more often, self directed and self expressive… Andre gives us a beautiful, articulate story of his own experience of fitness. Both painful and liberating I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did. Andre’s latest book Ghost Dogs, is out now! Please check his website for his speaking and reading tour dates and upcoming book releases. Caveat - Andre is from a different time both in the world of health and fitness and as an older white male who has experienced the worst of patriarchy as well as the privileges it has bestowed on him. There are moments in this interview where our values and opinions do not align for example I don’t think the fact that he and his wife are free of medication in their 60s is due solely to their healthy diet and exercise regime. I think they have access, education, genes and an untold amount of variables that have granted them the ease they are experiencing physically at their age. I also know that Andre would agree had I interrupted him at various moments. It is only due to my growth as an interviewer that I was not able to share that opinion. Please listen with that in mind. Dead Weight is a call for solidarity among those affected by eating disorders, which is all of us, no matter our relationship to food. | Self Care & Self Medicating with Francesca Paparone LCSW | 22 Jul 2023 | 00:51:20
On this episode I'm joined by former long-time client (you might remember her from the early years of IG where she featured prominently on my grid!) and original co-host (season1!) Francesca Paparone LCSW, now a professional in her field. Francesca is back to discuss mental health, addiction, the life saving value of Narcan and how prescription medicine can be both a support and a slippery slope. Tune in for my mini rant about caffeine and sidebar on how our lungs actually function (which is why it's helpful not to mess with our brain impulses too much)! It's a great conversation and we promise to have Francesca back for lighter topics too. Resources mentioned: How to get Narcan over the Counter in your state (in the USA) How we All Got Hooked on Caffeine If you would like to contact Francesca to seek counseling you can reach her here: FrancescaPaparonelmsw@gmail.com Or reach out to the practice where she works here: https://www.forwardtherapygroup.com/

| Herbal Medicine in a Modern Medicine world with Western Herbalist 7Song | 01 Jul 2023 | 00:47:36 | |
My guest this episode is 7Song, a renowned (humbly) western herbalist and teacher. I was his student many years ago when I took the 8 month program at his school, The Northeast School of Botanical Medicine. Today we discussed the importance of herbal medicine in a modern medicine world. We discussed depression and adrenal fatigue as both are in some cases an over, rather than under, stimulation of the nervous system which is a very important distinction if you are going to treat them. And we walked listeners through how to begin engaging with herbal medicine if this episode inspires an interest. I was so pleased to be able to grab 7Song for this conversation. You can reach out to him for care via the Ithaca Free Clinic either in person or virtually. All appointments are free (caveat since it is volunteer run, don't expect a quick and efficient scheduling experience). | Who is Wellness For with Fariha Roisin | 17 Jun 2023 | 01:15:06
On this episode I'm joined by author Fariha Roisin to discuss her book Who Is Wellness For. I could talk to Fariha for hours! She is an insightful, sensitive writer and speaker. Her book bridges memoir and journalism to bring light to the many ways that the wellness industry and the pursuit of healing can harm those already affected by white supremacy and colonialism's violent legacy. We had a fascinating conversation discussing the role of imagination in healing, the political importance of self care and the heartbreakingly much too common wound of incest. Find her book HERE and Fariha's work and social media HERE and HERE. You can find resources for The De-Growth Movement HERE and HERE.

| viBe Theater: a legacy of voice | 10 Jun 2023 | 00:38:08 | |
On today's episode I'm joined by Michelan LeMonier the co-executive director of viBe Theater Experience in Brooklyn NY. We discuss the power of art, story and empowerment and learn about the incredible breadth of dynamic programming that viBe Theater Experience is able to provide - even during the pandemic to young women, and nonbinary youth of color. Today's discussion touched on everything from where and how healing happens, destigmatizing mental health in the Black community, to the power of creating and sustaining a BIPOC female led community organization.
viBe Theater Experience produces original theater, music, and media written and performed by young women and nonbinary youth of color ages 13-26. As of 2020 viBe Theater Experience is nation-wide with programming that is both in-person and virtual.
This episode was originally recorded as a conversation with both co executive directors of viBe Theater Experience; Beryl Ford and Michelan LeMonier. Due to my own inexperience as an interviewer I felt that that original conversation did not fully highlight viBe Theater Experience and the experience of its participants. Fortunately I was able to interview Miss LeMonier a second time, as she is not only the co-executive director but a former viBe Theater Experience participant. That conversation is the one you'll hear.
Any inconsistencies and the absence of Beryl Ford are due to the constraints of having one episode for each interview and my own learning curve. They are in no way a reduction or minimization of Beryl Ford, her importance to viBe Theater Experience and her work. I am grateful she was able to take the time to join us for that first interview and regretful that due to my own mistakes, it was not possible to share.
If you are interested in collaborating, viewing their performances, donating, or working with viBe Theater Experience, reach out to them HERE. Follow viBe Theater on IG HERE. Watch performances HERE
I had a wonderful time talking with Miss LeMonier again. I hope it is the first of many connections. | Community Health; Revolutionizing Aesthetic Practices with Educator and Small Business Salon Owner Uncle Nat | 04 Jun 2025 | 01:17:07
In today's conversation I finally get to talk to my insta-crush Uncle Nat! Uncle Nat is an educator, innovator, and the founder of Uncle Nat’s, a radically inclusive salon located in Brooklyn. Uncle Nat has reshaped the field of body hair removal with the all-gender Brazilian and created a gender-affirming, fat-glorifying, trauma- and disability-aware, deeply POC-informed salon space that provides mutual care on multiple levels. Uncle Nat is a powerful proponent of the importance of vulnerability in client relationships, the role of community in creating safe spaces, and the problem with cancel culture. The need for emotional maturity and open communication in navigating the complexities of running a small business while maintaining a commitment to accessibility and care is a deep topic for us both and I so appreciated this conversation! Also Uncle Nat is hilarious and we share some good laughs. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did! If you enjoy my substack, simply ‘hearting’ it helps to spread my work. If you want to do more, comment, re-stack or share it to someone whom you think will enjoyed it. All of my work exists because of the support of my community. Please consider upgrading to paid to make this a more viable income source for me and my small team. During our conversation Uncle Nat mentioned three people who speak about the problems inherent in cancel culture: Africa Brooke , Clementine Morrigan and Adrianne Maree Brown's book We Will Not Cancel UsFind Uncle Nat on IG Here on TikTok HereMake an appointment to visit their salon or book coaching HERE I’ve written about ‘eating a lot’ here Guacamole Fulfillment And how not all poor mental health is ‘bad’ - enjoy! This episode I am speaking with Caroline Contillo, a Disaster Equity Researcher who has been exploring somatic healing in the face of our collective impending doom (or atleast future major upheaval). Caroline has a wonderful perspective on how we can engage with the overwhelming prospect of climate change on an individual, physical level while still staying plugged into the collective community that will ultimately sustain us.
She gives us some wonderful practical somatic tools to stay grounded and even have levity in such frightening times. I'm so glad to welcome Caroline to Busy Body and look forward to having her back!

| How to Work Out | 06 Jul 2020 | 01:01:42 | |
