| Episode 67: Miep Gies- A woman who just wanted to do the right thing | 19 Sep 2025 | 00:44:12 | |
Hello and welcome back to Breakfast with Mom! Today we’re focusing on a woman whose quiet courage changed the course of history — Miep Gies. You might know her as the woman who helped hide Anne Frank and her family during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands. But Miep’s life story is much richer than that moment alone. It’s a story of compassion, bravery, and moral conviction in a time when silence could mean complicity, and speaking out could cost you everything. | Episode 66: Jennie Wade- Civilian Casualty of the Battle of Gettysburg | 05 Sep 2025 | 00:45:49
Hello and welcome back to Breakfast with Mom! Today, we travel back to the blood-soaked fields of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania — July, 1863. The Civil War is raging. Muskets crack. Cannons thunder. And amid the chaos, a 20-year-old woman kneads bread dough in her sister’s kitchen. Her name is Jennie Wade, she will become the only direct civilian casualty of the Battle of Gettysburg. Jennie Wade wasn’t a soldier. She wasn’t a spy. She wasn’t part of any grand political plot. She was a daughter, a sister, and a seamstress— born May 21, 1843, right in the town that would soon become infamous.

| Episode 49: Emma Koehler- Brewess of San Antonio | 10 Jan 2025 | 01:04:33 | |
Hello and welcome back to Breakfast with Mom! Happy New Year everyone. This is the first episode for our 2025 season! Today I want to introduce Emma Bentzen Koehler. Emma Bentzen Koehler, was an entrepreneur and president of the San Antonio Brewing Association, was born in St. Louis, Missouri, on February 25, 1858 to her parents, Ulrich Friedrich Wilhelm Bentzen and Helene Henriette Sophie (Garrels) Bentzen. Her parents emigrated from Hanover Germany to St. Louis during the late 1830s. Her mother died in 1860 from heart disease at the age of 48. Her father would go on to marry Marianna Bertha Wiebe in 1862. During her childhood in St. Louis, she and her siblings participated in German-American cultural events and associations, including the turnverein movement. A Turnverein is a gymnastic or athletic club that originated in Germany in 1811. The term comes from the German words turnen, which means "to practice gymnastics," and Verein, which means "club, union". Her father would pass away in 1882 at the age of 76. Emma's early years in the U.S. were shaped by her immigrant experience, learning the value of hard work, cultural adaptation, and business acumen.

| Episode 32: Gustav Klimt and his art stolen by the Nazis | 17 May 2024 | 00:41:44 | |
Hello and welcome back to Breakfast with Mom! Gustav was an Austrian symbolist painter and one of the most prominent figures in the Vienna Secession movement. Born on July 14, 1862, in Baumgarten, near Vienna, Austria, Gustav demonstrated artistic talent from a young age. He studied at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts, where he was trained in architectural painting and decorative arts. One of Gustav's most famous paintings, "Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I," was at the center of one of the most notable art thefts and restitution cases in history. The Portrait is an oil painting on canvas, with gold leaf. The painting was commissioned by Ferdinand Bloch-Bauer, a wealthy industrialist and Adele Bloch-Bauer's husband; the painting was completed sometime in 1907. During World War II, when Austria was occupied by Nazi Germany, the painting, along with other valuable artworks, was seized from the Bloch-Bauer family by the Nazis. After the war, the painting ended up in the possession of the Austrian government. It was displayed in the Austrian Gallery Belvedere in Vienna for many years. https://www.neuegalerie.org/collection/artist-profiles/gustav-klimt https://www.britannica.com/biography/Gustav-Klimt https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gustav_Klimt https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portrait_of_Adele_Bloch-Bauer_I https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adele_Bloch-Bauer https://jwa.org/encyclopedia/article/bloch-bauer-adele https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maria_Altmann https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woman_in_Gold_(film) Say What?!: https://www.npr.org/2024/05/03/1248880788/wally-alligator-missing-georgia All the things: Music: "Electronic Rock (King Around Here)" by Alex Grohl https://pixabay.com/music/search/electronic%20rock%20king Logo Artwork: Strawbeary Studios https://www.youtube.com/@StrawbearyStudios/featured Episode was researched, written and edited by Shanoa Social Media: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100090200010112 X (formerly Twitter): @breakfastmompod Email: breakfastwithmompodcast@gmail.com Website: https://breakfastwithmompodcast.com/ Festival link: https://truecrimepodcastfestival.com/tickets/ Promo Code: BREAKFAST

| Episode 30: Titanic Survivors | 19 Apr 2024 | 01:02:07 | |
Hello and welcome back to Breakfast with Mom! This is the 112 anniversary of the sinking of the RMS Titanic. I won’t bore you with the story of the Titanic but I do want to give a brief summary of the Titanic story just in case there are some out there that have been living under a rock their whole life- the luxury liner RMS Titanic, launched on May 31, 1911, and set sail on its maiden voyage from Southampton en route to New York City on April 10, 1912, with 2,240 passengers and crew on board. On April 15, 1912, after striking an iceberg, Titanic broke apart and sank to the bottom of the ocean, taking with it the lives of more than 1,500 passengers and crew. On board were some of the world’s richest people, JP Morgan, John Jacob Astor IV, Margaret Brown and Isidor Straus, co-owner of Macy's, and his wife, Ida just to name a few. I will not be telling you about them, instead I wanted to highlight a party of 4 women traveling together in cabins B-3, B-5 and E-10. These women would survive on lifeboat 2. https://titanic.fandom.com/wiki/Elisabeth_Walton_Allen https://www.encyclopedia-titanica.org/titanic-survivor/elisabeth-walton-allen.html https://titanic.fandom.com/wiki/Emilie_Kreuchen https://www.encyclopedia-titanica.org/titanic-survivor/emilie-kreuchen.html https://titanic.fandom.com/wiki/Elisabeth_Walton_Robert https://www.encyclopedia-titanica.org/titanic-survivor/elisabeth-walton-robert.html https://titanic.fandom.com/wiki/Georgette_Alexandra_Madill https://www.encyclopedia-titanica.org/titanic-survivor/georgette-madill.html https://www.encyclopedia-titanica.org/titanic/lifeboats/lifeboat-2/ All the things: Music: "Electronic Rock (King Around Here)" by Alex Grohl https://pixabay.com/music/search/electronic%20rock%20king Logo Artwork: Strawbeary Studios https://www.youtube.com/@StrawbearyStudios/featured Episode was researched, written and edited by Shanoa Social Media: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100090200010112 X (formerly Twitter): @breakfastmompod Email: breakfastwithmompodcast@gmail.com Website: https://breakfastwithmompodcast.com/ Festival link: https://truecrimepodcastfestival.com/tickets/ Promo Code: BREAKFAST

| Episode 63: Cement City, Dallas, Texas | 28 Jul 2025 | 00:37:56 | |
Hello and welcome back to Breakfast with Mom West Dallas is an area consisting of many communities and neighborhoods in Dallas, Texas, United States. West Dallas lies just west of Downtown Dallas, north of Oak Cliff, and east of Irving and Grand Prairie. Largely lying in the Trinity River floodplain, the area's history has been largely defined by its relationship to the river, to industry, and to downtown. Although not incorporated into Dallas until the 1950s, West Dallas has had a close but problematic relationship to the city since its founding. The area is currently undergoing significant changes due to its central location within the city, attracting new development and revitalization efforts but also threatening existing communities. Hello and welcome back to Breakfast with Mom! On March 9, 1977 Francine Hughes stood outside her Michigan home, watching it burn. Inside was her abusive husband, Mickey. Earlier that night, he had beaten and raped her for the last time. She stood watching the fire, then turned and entered the car where three of her children cowered in fear. Then she drove herself to authorities and turned herself in. Little did she know that in a few short years there would be a book and movie about this night. A book would be released in 1980 and a made for TV movie would later be released in 1984. https://people.com/archive/cover-story-a-violent-death-a-haunted-life-vol-22-no-15/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Burning_Bed https://www.newspapers.com/article/lansing-state-journal-francine-arraignme/142160227/ https://www.newspapers.com/article/lansing-state-journal-francine-confessio/142160692/ https://www.newspapers.com/article/lansing-state-journal-francine-confessio/142160692/ https://www.newspapers.com/article/lansing-state-journal-francine-trial-ca/142164468/ Say What?! : https://www.npr.org/2024/02/12/1230711926/mummified-monkeys-boston-airport-bushmeat All the things: Music: "Electronic Rock (King Around Here)" by Alex Grohl https://pixabay.com/music/search/electronic%20rock%20king Logo Artwork: Strawbeary Studios https://www.youtube.com/@StrawbearyStudios/featured Episode was researched, written and edited by Shanoa Social Media: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100090200010112 X (formerly Twitter): @breakfastmompod Email: breakfastwithmompodcast@gmail.com Website: https://breakfastwithmompodcast.com/ Festival link: https://truecrimepodcastfestival.c

| Episode 22: Yes, Virginia There is a Santa Claus! | 29 Dec 2023 | 00:58:36 | |
Hello and welcome back to Breakfast with Mom! We are going to conclude our Christmas series. Today’s Christmas story takes place in New York City 1897. I found this story when I watched the 2009 movie on Netflix. I’m sure some of our listeners have seen the movie’s thumbnail while surfing Netflix for a Christmas movie but may not know it was based on a true story. In 1897, Virginia asked her father whether Santa Claus existed. His answer did not convince her, and she decided to pose the question to the New York newspaper The Sun. Sources conflict over whether her father suggested writing the letter or she elected to on her own. In her letter, Virginia wrote that her father had told her, "If you see it in The Sun it's so." Virginia later told The Sun that her father thought the newspaper would be "too busy" to respond to her question and had said, "Write if you want to," but not to be disappointed if she did not get a response. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virginia_O%27Hanlon#References https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yes,_Virginia,_there_is_a_Santa_Claus https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/10184308/virginia-o'hanlon https://guides.loc.gov/chronicling-america-yes-virginia https://www.laurinburgexchange.com/news/55772/the-rest-of-the-story

| Episode 20: An Edwardian Christmas Story | 01 Dec 2023 | 00:36:44 | |
Hello and welcome back to Breakfast with Mom! The English Victorians celebrated Christmas a little differently than we do today. In Victorian England, Christmas was an opportunity to exchange gruesome stories of ghosts, evil spirits, and people gone mad. According to Sara Cleto, an expert in folklore who spoke with History.com, Victorian-era ghost stories were ideal for an England night that was swathed in darkness. At night, with candles or a fire as the only light source, the atmosphere was perfect for a spooky story to kill time on a long winter’s night. Part of the incentive to tell ghost stories was a belief that spirits had license for mischief on Christmas Eve—a kind of free play for ghosts before they were said to restrain themselves on the holy day to follow. One such story is Smee (A Christmas Ghost Story) by AM Burrage, however this story was written in the Edwardian era but does pull from the preceding Victorian time period.

| Episode 19: Teapot Dome Scandal of the 1920’s | 17 Nov 2023 | 00:28:47 | |
Hello and welcome back to Breakfast with Mom. Ingredients 12 ounces cranberries (rinsed and dried) 1 cup white sugar 1 cup fresh squeezed orange juice Directions: Dissolve sugar in the orange juice in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Stir in the cranberries and cook until they start to pop, about 10 minutes. Remove from heat and place sauce in a bowl. It will thicken as it cools. You can even make this a day ahead and place in the fridge after it has come to room temperature. Extra step: from here you can add orange zest to the top to make it more festive. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teapot_Dome_scandal https://www.britannica.com/money/topic/Teapot-Dome-Scandal https://www.crf-usa.org/bill-of-rights-in-action/bria-24-4-the-teapot-dome-scandal.html https://untoldhistory.org/the-teapot-dome-scandal-explained/ https://www.wyohistory.org/encyclopedia/teapot-dome-scandal https://www.history.com/topics/roaring-twenties/teapot-dome-scandal#paying-off-the-press

| Episode 62: Mia Zapata- Cherished daughter - sister - artist - friend - git | 11 Jul 2025 | 01:05:59 | |
Hello and welcome back to Breakfast with Mom! Today’s episode is something I have wanted to cover for a while and with this being the 32nd anniversary of the death of Mia Zapata and thought this would be the best time to dive into her life, death and legacy. Mia Katherine Zapata was an American musician who was the lead vocalist for the punk rock band The Gits. After gaining praise in the emerging grunge scene, Zapata was raped and murdered in Seattle in 1993 while walking home from the Comet Tavern at the age of 27. The crime went unsolved for a decade before her killer, Jesus Mezquia, was arrested in 2003. The following year, Mezquia was tried, convicted, and sentenced to 36 years in prison.
