Episode 67: Miep Gies- A woman who just wanted to do the right thing

vendredi 19 septembre 2025Duration 44:12

Send us a text

Hello and welcome back to Breakfast with Mom!

Today we’re focusing on a woman whose quiet courage changed the course of history — Miep Gies.

You might know her as the woman who helped hide Anne Frank and her family during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands. But Miep’s life story is much richer than that moment alone. It’s a story of compassion, bravery, and moral conviction in a time when silence could mean complicity, and speaking out could cost you everything.

Episode 66: Jennie Wade- Civilian Casualty of the Battle of Gettysburg

vendredi 5 septembre 2025Duration 45:49

Send us a text

Hello and welcome back to Breakfast with Mom!

Today, we travel back to the blood-soaked fields of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania — July, 1863. The Civil War is raging. Muskets crack. Cannons thunder. And amid the chaos, a 20-year-old woman kneads bread dough in her sister’s kitchen.

Her name is Jennie Wade, she will become the only direct civilian casualty of the Battle of Gettysburg.

Jennie Wade wasn’t a soldier. She wasn’t a spy. She wasn’t part of any grand political plot. She was a daughter, a sister, and a seamstress— born May 21, 1843, right in the town that would soon become infamous.

Episode 51: Mary Lillian Ellison-The Fabulous Moolah

vendredi 7 février 2025Duration 24:13

Send us a text

Hello and welcome back to Breakfast with Mom!

Today I want to tell you about Mary Lillian Ellison, known as The Fabulous Moolah.

Mary Lillian Ellison  was an iconic professional wrestler whose career spanned more than five decades, making her one of the most influential and groundbreaking figures in the history of women's wrestling.  You can find my resources in the show notes.

Mary was born on July 22, 1933, in Kershaw, South Carolina, and grew up in Tookiedoo, 12 miles from Columbia. She was the youngest of five children, Ellison was the only daughter of Henry Lee and Suzann Atkinson Ellison.

When her mother died of cancer, eight-year-old Ellison went to live with her paternal grandmother and worked on her cousin's cotton farm to make money. At age 10, she was still deeply distraught over her mother's death; to cheer her up, her father took her to the local wrestling matches. She liked the matches, but it was not until she saw Women's Champion Mildred Burke wrestle that they began to mean much more to her.

Episode 50: Ethel Johnson- A Bad Mama Jama

vendredi 24 janvier 2025Duration 32:59

Send us a text

Hello and welcome back to Breakfast with Mom!

Today I want to introduce everyone to Ethel Blanche Hairston AKA Ethel Johnson.

Ms. Ethel was an American professional wrestler whose ring name was Ethel Johnson.  She debuted at age 16, becoming the first African-American women's champion.  She was a fan favorite, billed as "the biggest attraction to hit girl wrestling since girl wrestling began."

Ethel Blanche Wingo on May 14th, 1935  in Decatur, Georgia, to Gladys Chase and Clifford Wingo. She was raised in a time when opportunities for African-American women in professional sports were scarce. Despite the challenges, she was drawn to sports at an early age and soon developed a passion for wrestling. Johnson’s athleticism and determination led her to pursue wrestling as a career, and she began training in the early 1960s, a time when the industry was predominantly male and segregated.
