Happy Tuesday! Joe Erskine, baseball afficionado and Private Division producer, is BACK! The regular season is coming to an end and the Cardinals are out of the race. We do eventually get around to talking games: some Cult of the Lamb, some College Football, some Space Marine 2. APOLOGIES for the wonky audio, my usual method for recording had a hiccup. | Episode 155: On Playing with Friends | 09 Jan 2024 | 01:07:00
Here it is. The first episode of my "On Playing With" series. This episode is focused, as the title suggests, on the ever-evolving social structure of playing games with my group of friends, how that group changes (for good and bad), how the games constantly change, and how balance is a dish best served carefully. There are good times and bad times bundled up in this experience. And it's an experience I wouldn't trade, though I do sometimes wish I could switch it off for a few days. Come hang as I work through it all. https://www.twitch.tv/nerdybitstv You can listen to us below, or on iTunes , Spotify, and Google Play! The conversation takes a turn eventually, but we won’t spoil that for you here, you have to dig In and hear it yourself.

We want to thank Kevin and Game Workers Unite for being so willing to talk to us. It was a blast. Enjoy! Since the initial craze of the last man standing game mode, we have seen several titles tick across our feeds. Vigor, The Darwin Project, Ring of Elysium, and perhaps most notably, Apex Legends. At the same time, the “I can’t escape this” craze has seemingly died down. Join Caleb, Ben, and Ryan as they discuss whether Battle Royale is here to stay, or if it is on its way out.

Well. Here we go! It's 2024. And while that is, on its own, a wild statement, it is a true one. With the new year I wanted to push forward in several different ways for NerdyBits and myself. So, I am starting a new mini podcast series titled "On Playing With" starting tomorrow. The series will focus on the dynamics of playing games with different groups of people in my life, how those dynamics shift, and how the experience changes as a result. I am also conducting several interviews in the coming weeks. We will see the return of Joe Erskine and Jon Everist, as well as a few more. The stream is returning to Mondays and Wednesdays. And finally, I am pushing the Patreon again. All of those things are detailed a bit more in this episode, so come settle in! https://www.twitch.tv/nerdybitstv You can listen to us below, or on iTunes , Spotify, and Google Play! What’s up folks! This weeks Bounty Board comes with a bit of a bittersweet moment. Our very own Sawft-Clothez Sommelier is heading out. Bobby is stepping away from the show to pursue a few other opportunities and tend to some changes in routine at home. This week on Bounty Board, with guest host , the crew dives a discussion about Toxicity in Games. We discuss the toxicity we have experienced, the toxic tactics we have seen deployed, the toxic tactics we have used at times, and what the road to a less toxic environment might look like. How will big companies like Microsoft and Sony work to counter-act toxic interactions and repeat offenders? Is there a way to do this effectively or will toxicity always be around in some way? Is toxicity inherent to gaming? @hybridglass is traveling this week as well, so tune in to hear @LubWub and @sergeantsodium hold it down with guest @sketchsawyer! | Bounty Board 050: Couch Co-op vs. Online Multiplayer | 05 Jul 2019 | 01:47:44
Happy Birthday America! While everyone is recovering from ringing ears and freedom beer hangovers, join your favorite nerds as they talk about gathering around the TV with a bunch of friends and blowing other shit up. Couch co-op, sitting next to people for you co-op gaming, was nearly a thing of the past. The Xbox One and PS4, while more powerful systems, didn’t quite continue the legacy of couch co-op games, and instead leaned into playing games online. In this week’s Bounty Board, the crew sit down and talk about why this transition took place, how it came to be, and whether they think that couch co-op is making a return or if it is dead. To spice things up, Eric brought his couch co-op partner Matt, on the show to join us. Matt and Eric have been going to each other’s house to play games, reigniting the passion for shared gaming experiences. The guys talk about a lot tonight. They reminisce on Halo: CE and Halo 2, and the global phenomena those games were. They discuss the rise of online gaming and how the introduction of broadband changed the space forever. They talk about Call of Duty, and the wave of PvP game types that became available as a result of dividing the community into their own homes. It is an interesting episode Folks! | Bounty Board 048: The Ethics of Leaks | 21 Jun 2019 | 02:04:56
With E3 in the rearview mirror and the coming fall of games, the Bounty Board crew take some time to talk about something that happens frequently in games, especially as E3 approaches: Leaks. There were several things that leaked out to the public in the days drawing up to E3. Bandai Namco had a security breach that lead to the reveal of many unannounced titles, Bleeding Edge footage with a “CONFIDENTIAL” watermark found its way onto the web, details about Star Wars came out. @hybridglass is out of town this week, exploring the wilds of West Elizabeth (Colorado), so we are joined by friend and fan of the show @RealDirtySmurf. With all of these leaks a debate rose up within the group: Are leaks a good thing or a bad thing? Are there good leaks and bad leaks? Are all leaks the same? Do they damage the perception of the games that are detailed? Do they damage the studios making the games? The questions are abundant in this episode, and the answers aren’t all clear. Join the gang and their guest as we debate the ethics of leaks. It is here. E3 is just a day away. This is the moment we have all be waiting for. So of course, your crew of wonderful nerds (and @sergeantsodium), sat down and talked about what they wanted to see on video games biggest stage. This one is dense y’all, so I will stay brief here. We run through a series of questions for each of the big conferences: What do they NEED to do this year? What do we know we will see? Longshot prediction? Sure thing prediction (unannounced)? What will define their presentation? Dig in folks. There is a lot going on in this one! | Bounty Board 045: Can Games Be Mediocre? | 31 May 2019 | 02:00:50
Hello friends! Bounty Board is back again, this time with a guest! Richard Nava (@richarrizard) joins the crew this week to talk about the existence of mediocre games. Prompted by a conversation on Kinda Funny Games Daily, @LubWub wanted to ask the question, “Are mediocre games ok?” Do we need to hold games to a nearly unattainable standard, a standard set by iconoclasts like God of War, The Last of Us, or Marvel’s Spider-Man? In this week’s episode we dive deep into the reality that not all games can be perfection. Should gamers be more forgiving? Should we be more willing to talk up and suggest games that aren’t perfect? Are B-games, like B-movies, in need of a more definitive genre? What kinds of “mediocre” games have we played? How many have we loved, despite their not being “THE BEST THING EVARRRR"? Join us as we talk about why all games have a place, and how art is always objective. | Bounty Board 044: Do Exclusives Really Define a Console? | 24 May 2019 | 01:50:29
Hey friends! The Bounty Board is back this again! This week the Crew dives into whether or not console exclusives define the console. There is no question in the world that Sony’s PS4 has dominated the console market in total sales, both in hardware and in exclusive software. But is that the thing that will be talked about as the next generation approaches? Xbox has been on a meteoric rise in the last two years, due largely to their successful introduction of the Xbox Game Pass service. The debate is lively in this one. Are PlayStation’s exclusives the reason they won the “console war”. Is it at all possible that Xbox’s poor launch impacted the race more? What happened to Halo and Gears of War. the Xbox flagship titles have been largely quiet this generation. The crew is in rare form this week, so dive in and get ready for @hybridglass’s coffee to “slide into your BMs.” News for the week: Game Pass Reveals 8 New Titles You can listen to us below, or on iTunes , Stitcher, Spotify, and Google Play! Hey everyone! @LubWub is back! He has returned from the UK and as he came back @hybridglass headed off to Chicago, so we are joined by guest @sketchsawyer on the ol’ Bounty Board! This week we bring up the age old debate: Are Games Art? It is a lively discussion, as the Crew talk table their arguments. Are all games art or is it only some? Do sports games count as art? Happy Spring/Easter everyone! This week on Bounty Board the crew sits down to talk about the things that we like because we realized that, well, we hadn’t really done that yet. So we dive into the things that we look for in our games. There are so many titles out there that sometimes it is tough to figure out what to play. We discuss the things we look for, the things that keep us coming back for more, and the things that turn us away. Join us for this fun discussion and learn what the Bounty Board Crew loves about the video game industry as both critics and gamers. We discuss our favorite genres, how we prefer our multiplayer and single player experiences, what we look for in long form RPGs, and what we love about competitive and non-competitive games. | Bounty Board 039: First Person or Third Person? | 15 Apr 2019 | 01:49:40
This week on Bounty Board, the crew discusses the pros and cons of the two most pervasive perspectives in games: First Person and Third Person. So many games fall into the these two categories. From Call of Duty to Farming Simulator, the perspective we see these games through dictates how we experience games. In this episode we ask ourselves what about these two viewpoints impacts us and how do they impact the stories and experiences they present. Does third person make for a more immersive experience or first person? When you are playing an RPG with a created character, is third or first person better? Do you play Battle Royale games in third or first person? The questions are nearly endless, but the crew comes to a few pretty solid conclusions. Aaaaaaaand we also get really off track…don’t judge us… News for the week: Star Wars IX Gets a Trailer and a Subtitle You can listen to us below, or on iTunes , Stitcher, Spotify, and Google Play! | Bounty Board 038: Games vs. Movies | 09 Apr 2019 | 01:44:52
This week on Bounty Board the crew wanted to take a second and figure out why we will all argue about games until our eyes grow heavy, but we will let you dislike a movie all you want. Like…seriously. Why do we defend games so hard? Is it because we get to play games, and can only watch movies? Is it because we just like games more than we like movies? We also have a short discussion about what “Real Games” are. And boy, that was…interesting (love you Sarge). Join us as we talk Star Wars and Star Wars games, why you are allowed to hate our favorite movies, and why you can never say a single bad word about Red Dead, or @LubWub will challenge you to a duel. | Bounty Board 037: eSports and Stuff | 02 Apr 2019 | 01:59:28
So we sat down this week to go in-depth on eSports and then realized…we have already done that. Batting 1.000 over here. So instead of going super deep on eSports, a rapidly growing industry across the globe, we decided to talk about what eSports means to us. Why we watch them, or don’t. What games we like to watch. What games we want to see take center stage. And what games we think will help eSports break through to the beer and nachos crowd. We also gush a lot about the Borderlands 3 reveal. Because, why wouldn’t we? There are guns with legs, for crying out loud! Also we are are obsessed with the mechanical hunk that is Flak. Folks…There’s been some exciting things going on in the last week. Whooo-eee! This Bounty Board has a whole lot of news for you! From trailers out the wazoo, to Disney and Fox finalizing their merger, to Battle Passes, to Anniversary content, to Suicide Squad reboots. This week has been CRAZY! All of that news culminated with Google’s unveiling of Stadia, a new platform for gaming, and it has been all we have been able to talk about. So, join the crew this week as we dive into, not only what Stadia will mean for the industry immediately, but what the future of gaming looks like overall. Will streaming be the main way to play games in the future? How far away is that future? How long until games on disc are treated like VHS and production of physical media halts altogether? There are a lot of questions in here and we do our best to come to conclusions on as many as we can. News for the week: LucasArts Returns? | Bounty Board 035: The Division 2 is Here! | 19 Mar 2019 | 01:30:10
The Bounty Board crew has been excited about Division 2 since the day it was announced. Last week they got to dive into the new title from Massive Entertainment and Ubisoft. 20 levels deep, and impressed by what the sequel to the best selling new franchise ever has to offer, we want to talk all things Division 2. The first game, though it sold well, was full of issues, both small and large. How did they address the Dark Zone griefing issues? How did they address the lack of endgame content in the initial game’s launch? Come listen as we discuss the things we love about this new title and the things we want to see improved. Indiana Jones is back! IS it good? Is it weird? Is it the end? Find the answer to all of those questions here. TL:DR Action movies are silly fun and this is one of those movies. Harrison Ford looks like he's having a blast, the surrounding cast do a tremendous job, it's written well and, you know what, it feels like Indiana Jones. What more could you ask for!? | Bounty Board 034: What is a Gamer? | 12 Mar 2019 | 01:54:52
Games have been a round a long time. Like, before most of our show hosts were born, sorry @hybridglass (he’s old). But because they have been around so long, millions of people have been impacted by games. That group of gamers is diverse as all heck! Men, women, boys, girls, white, black, young, old, gay, straight. Gamers come in EVERY size and shape. So to celebrate that, we wanted to talk about not only what this beautiful group looks like, but how we came to call ourselves gamers as well. This week on Bounty Board the crew celebrates being gamers. We talk about where it all started for us. We talk about how it has changed our lives. We talk about the impact it has had not only in our social circles but in our families. Truly, we can all be gamers, and the more people who join us, the stronger we become (boy did that sound ominous *wrings hands excitedly). Hey folks! Dont know if you have noticed this or not, but Apex Legends is CRUSHING IT! In the first month alone the new Battle Royale game out of Respawn Entertainment has accrued 50 million players. We talk about our favorite Legends to play with, the ones we didn’t jive with, what we like about this new take on the Battle Royale genre, and so many other things. Like, how is the Ping system so damn good? Who would have thought that a hero style shooter would make a good Battle Royale game. Apex Marketing 101: A Class in Surprise Launch Hype. | Bounty Board 032: The Anthem of Criticism | 26 Feb 2019 | 01:42:16
BioWare’s highly anticipated new IP Anthem is finally out!!! There have been a lot of things floating around the internet since the beginning of the early access started. Many spoke out about the games brokenness, incompletion, and flop. But as a group who has played and enjoyed the game, we find ourselves…confused. Why do the opinions on Anthem differ so greatly? How can a reviewer call a Live Service game that isn’t out yet incomplete? We aren’t going to tell you that Anthem is perfect either. We understand that there are aspects that could be fixed. The loading screens ARE bad. The flow of Forge, Mission, Post-Mission, Tarsis is slow and breaks the rhythm of the game up. But is it as bad as people are saying? Check out this episode for our takes! News for the week: Punisher and Jessica Jones Canceled You can listen to us below, or on iTunes and Stitcher! | Bounty Board 031: The End of Big Publishers? | 19 Feb 2019 | 01:54:58
In the last few months, large publishers within the gaming industry have endured some woes. Blizzard lost several CFOs in a single 10 day stretch, EA’s earnings report showed a tough Q3 for them, Activision and Bungie divorced, and finally (this last week) Activision/Blizzard laid off 800 employees despite having a “record year in sales.” Those layoffs specifically, incited a lot of backlash from the other developers, journalists, and the community as a whole. More and more, developers have started seeking ways to protect themselves and their jobs from a surprisingly cutthroat industry. This week the Bounty Board Crew ask ourselves the question: Are we seeing the fall of the Big Publishers? Are EA and Activision dying or is the industry forcing them to evolve? How can games become more profitable? Will We see more studios go indie? Join us for another great episode! | Bounty Board 030: Should Games Cost More? | 13 Feb 2019 | 01:44:26
There has been an almost constant debate in the game industry for the last decade: Should games cost more? With the ever-increasing cost of development, video game publishers and developers have been tirelessly searching for new ways to bring in money. Is that through adding those “dreaded” microtransactions? Is it by creating a season pass that nabs that extra bit of money off the bat from gamers? Or does it come from raising the initial price of games overall? This week on Bounty Board the crew dives into the debate on the price of games. Should they go up? Is there something different that publishers could be doing to get more money from their audiences? How much would you pay for a game that you put 1000 hours into? What about a game that you only put 30 into? News for the week: Xbox Live Expansion Leak You can listen to us below, or on iTunes and Stitcher! | Bounty Board 029: In Indie We Trust | 05 Feb 2019 | 01:40:08
For the longest time, the biggest and baddest games have fallen in the AAA category. A category of games that comes with millions of dollars for production, a huge marketing budget, dozens (if not hundreds) of developers, and the majority of the community’s attention. Then, in the late 2000s a movement began to gain momentum. As digital distribution grew, smaller studios began to release titles left and right. Titles that spoke to player’s emotions, specific genres and playstyles, and most importantly player’s wallets. Indie games were cheaper, but didn’t cut corners on quality. Almost overnight, indie games became a real contender in the video gaming world. This week on Bounty Board the crew dives into the indie “revolution” of the late 2000s and the indie “renaissance” we are in now. There are so many good indies that we actually forget that some of the games that we play are in the indie bracket. We reminisce on some of our favorites, talk about what lead to our AAA disenfranchisement, and discuss how indie games have brought the industry back into focus as a whole. A great talk here, folks! | Bounty Board 028: Hype Train Wreck | 28 Jan 2019 | 01:40:22
The Hype Train gets us all eventually. We see a game that we didn’t know was coming out. The fresh trailer, the beautiful visuals, the new take on gameplay. In an instant we get drawn into an unshakeable feeling of expectation. Numerous games have exploited this expectation. Drawing fans in for pre-orders, purchases, and DLC down the road. But some games have fallen victim to its power. The first Watch Dogs, a delightfully mediocre game in the first wave of games released on next gen hardware, was panned by critics who seemed to be expecting the second coming. This week on Bounty Board, the crew dives into whether or not the Hype Train is hurting the industry, forcing studios to come clean on their promises, or turning gamers away altogether. After all, when was the last time you let yourself get hyped for an upcoming title (Anthem and Division 2 for us, shhhh……)? | Bounty Board 027: Video Games Mobilize | 21 Jan 2019 | 01:44:12
Mobile games are the games that everyone plays but nobody talks about. Nearly everyone has a cellphone, most of the people with a phone have a single game installed. In terms of market saturation, the mobile market is ripe for money making, in incredibly large sums. But there is a culture taboo around mobile games it seems. Most people don’t want to pay 3 or 4 dollars for a game, how then do developers convince them to purchase 10 or 20 dollar games? This week on Bounty Board, the crew dives into the mobile gaming industry. How can developers appeal to more users? Is there a way to break the cultural conditioning that turns so many people away from mobile software? If games could temporarily block your notifications, would you play more? | Bounty Board 026: Game Pass is Crushing It Y'all | 14 Jan 2019 | 01:47:38
Xbox’s monthly subscription service Game Pass launched on June 1st, 2017. When it launched people were curious what the gaming company could offer gamers with what looked like it aimed to create a Netflix for games. Over the last year an a half, Game Pass has become one of the most valuable services available to gamers. Today the service has given players Below, Ashen, Mutant Year Zero, Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, Absolver, and Life is Strange 2: Part 1. And that is just in December and January. This week on Bounty Board the crew welcomes friend of the show Bobby Pease (@Bobbypease) to talk about just how good Game Pass is. We talk about what we love about the service and what excites us for the future. We talk about how Game Pass is preparing Xbox for a stellar next generation. | Episode 151: Cutscenes Edition #1 | 23 Jun 2023 | 00:29:07
So this is a weird one! I'm switching up the way I do movie reviews! I find it so much more gratifying and have received far more feedback spending a few weeks on a piece, ruminating, than when I slap together a 1300 word movie review the day after. It all just ends up feeling like hunting for the best tagline rather than the best thought. So, in the interest of enjoying watching movies in a critical capacity, I am transitioning the short "reviews" into audio bits I'm calling Cutscenes! On this first edition of Cutscenes I talk about Disney's Elemental, Wes Anderson's Asteroid City, and the new comedy No Hard Feelings. in the future I will do one movie per little episode. Most of the time. Cheers! You can listen to us below, or on iTunes , Stitcher, Spotify, and Google Play! So whether you have an Apple or Android device, we are available for streaming and download. | Bounty Board 023: The Horror of Video Game Movies | 19 Dec 2018 | 02:01:10
Why can’t we get a good video game movie? Seriously. Why does it feel like every time we get our hopes up that someone will get it right, those same hopes get dashed against the rocks when the film comes out? This week on Bounty Board Caleb and Eric try and figure out why so many of these movies are bad, and if we will ever get a good one. Also…what the fuck is up with that Sonic the Hedgehog poster? We apologize for the warbly audio with this episode. A technical failure that didn’t show its head until the edit, unfortunately. You can listen to us below, or on iTunes and Stitcher!
