Will Gravel Races Replace Fondos? Keeping Mass Rides Alive in Uncertain Times

Season 3 · Episode 13

mercredi 12 novembre 2025Duration 24:02

Two beloved BC fondos disappeared this year — and not because riders lost interest. We sit down with veteran organizer and Panache Cycling Sports CEO Jon Watkin to unpack the real reasons: traffic control costs spiralling to double-time rates, six-hour minimums, and newly required engineered traffic plans that turn a single intersection into a budget breaker. Jon explains where safety policy helps, where it overreaches, and how a one-size-fits-all approach can sink small, community-driven rides.

From there, we pivot to what’s thriving: gravel. Jon lays out why gravel cycling has become the most welcoming doorway into the sport, and how municipalities and tourism boards, eager to rebuild after the pandemic, are partnering to bring high-quality events to Vancouver Island and beyond.

New West Mayor talks Funding Freeze, Speed Cameras, Car Brain, and Safer Streets

Season 3 · Episode 12

lundi 27 octobre 2025Duration 28:26

'Slow down cars and save lives' sounds obvious, but how do we actually make that work on the ground? Where does funding for speed enforcement come from, and when fines are charged, where does the money actually land? New Westminster Mayor Patrick Johnstone debunks the myth of the speed-trap 'cash cow' and takes a clear-eyed look at BC’s pause on active transportation funding, the politics of 30 km/h residential limits, and why automated speed enforcement could be the fastest way to real safety gains.

Accessibility, Equity, Joy, and Fun: E-bike subsidies can take us there

Season 2 · Episode 7

lundi 23 décembre 2024Duration 32:15

UBC Prof and Transportation Engineer Dr. Alex Bigazzi explains how e-bike rebate programs are transforming the transportation landscape in BC. Bigazzi has all the data on who gets the subsidies, how the bikes are being used, whether anyone is taking a 'free ride' on the program, and whether e-bikes are actually replacing cars ... or bikes.

Dr. Bigazzi also shares how a pioneering subsidy initiative in Saanich paved the way for broader provincial adoption, and which strategies are successfully encouraging people to swap their cars for e-bikes thereby reducing carbon emissions and improving public health. Spoiler alert: it turns out that fun and joy are the key motivators for getting people onto bikes, and keeping them there.

Lower Speed Limits, Safer Streets: Unleashing the power of 30 km/hr Zones in BC

Season 2 · Episode 6

dimanche 1 décembre 2024Duration 33:20

What if a simple policy change could dramatically decrease road injuries and elevate community well-being? Dr. Michael Schwandt, Medical Health Officer for Vancouver Coastal Health, helps us unravel the transformative potential of a 30 km/hour speed limit on residential streets in British Columbia. We examine how this seemingly small adjustment could significantly reduce traffic fatalities and injuries, while fostering a safer environment for cyclists and pedestrians alike.

From debunking misconceptions about cycling to advocating for safer infrastructure, this episode reveals the multifaceted strategies essential for creating more inviting communities. We explore the implications of transportation policies, such as the often-overlooked dangers of right turns on red lights, and discuss the collaboration needed between local governments and public health authorities to champion safe cycling and pedestrian practices. Tune in to discover how these changes could not only revolutionize safety but also enhance mental and physical well-being across communities.
