Rachael Akhidenor - Founder, Self Care Originals23 Nov 202001:08:40
Beauty Island acknowledges and pays respect to the past, present and future Traditional Custodians and Elders of this nation and the continuation of cultural, spiritual and educational practices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Hello and welcome to Beauty Island, the award-nominated beauty podcast that celebrates life and lipstick. I'm your host, beauty journalist, Brittany Stewart. If you're new here or you just need a recap: Each episode, I sit down with a guest and ask them about the 8 beauty products that have a special memory or meaning for them. The ones they'd take to a desert island, or Beauty Island, that I am sending them off too. Maybe it's the first beauty product they ever bought, the one that gives them their signature look, or the perfume that instantly sparks a memory of a special place or person. Along the way we find out more about their life, career and the people and events that have shaped them into who they are today. And today, we have come to the season finale of Season 5 of Beauty Island! Gosh, it's been a strange year, but I'm so grateful for all your support with two seasons and that special Lockdown series. As I mentioned last week, Beauty Island was a finalist for Best Arts and Culture Podcast, which for an independent podcast run by just me, is a huge huge honour. And I couldn't do it without you! So thank you. I'll be taking a bit of a break over summer and returning in 2021 BUT the good news is that my Christmas podcast, A Christmas Binge, is returning for a second year! A fun and festive listen that looks at what we watch, what we eat and how we celebrate with interesting guests, the first episode will drop early december with some stellar guests so keep your eyes and ears out for that. I'll put a link to subscribe in the shownotes. Onto this season finale, today my guest is founder of Self Care Originals, Rachael Akhidenor. Described as a social enterprise disrupting the wellness industry by advocating for self care for all, Self Care Originals's current form is wearable activism and a content platform, but as you'll hear in this interview, it's just the beginning for the brilliant inclusive platform Rachael is building. I thought it particularly fitting to end the season and the year with this interview with Rachael, in arguably a year where we've talked about the concept of 'self-care' more than ever. In an insightful and thought-provoking chat, we talked about what self care actually means vs what we're sold it should be, what the wellness industry needs to do to welcome more diversity, her love of blush, and the affordable and unexpected oil she says is a gamechanger for dry skin. Beauty Island acknowledges and pays respect to the past, present and future Traditional Custodians and Elders of this nation and the continuation of cultural, spiritual and educational practices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Along the way we find out more about their life, career and the people and events that have shaped them into who they are today. An exciting announcement that Beauty Island has been nominated for an Australian Podcast Award! Yey! We're a finalist for Best Arts and Culture podcast, with the winner announced Saturday 21st November. So keep your fingers and toes crossed for me, and whether you've listened to one episode or all of them, I just wanted to say thank you to you so much for your support of the podcast. But enough about that for now! And on to today's episode. Today my guest is editor and journalist, Gyan Yankovich. Now a little disclaimer that this interview was recorded earlier this year, in May. Now that's a few months in normal times, but in 2020? Well, let's just say a lot has changed. When we recorded, Gyan was living in New York in the midst for a terrifying first wave and strict lockdown. She was also the managing editor of renowned fashion turned culture site, Man Repeller. Since we spoke, there have been a succession of changes - a callout, a redesign and then, most recently, the announcement of the closure of the site. For more context read this. Before that, Gyan moved back to Australia and is now the Managing Editor of Junkee. If you grew up reading Aussie magazines in the 20teens, you'll no doubt recognise Gyan's face. Born in Bathurst, before moving to Sydney to pursue a career in the glossy world of magazines, Gyan was a beauty editor for the likes of Cleo, Cosmo and Dolly before moving to digital to help form Buzzfeed Australia's founding team. She is brilliant, talented and she has the best and longest natural lashes I have ever seen. We talked through the mascaras that bookmark her beauty journey, the legend of the office tanning salon for beauty editors, applying foundation with your fingers and what exactly are the Saturday spirals. If you enjoy this episode, please rate and write a review on Apple Podcasts or subscribe on Spotify if you haven't already. Or recommend to a friend or many friends, by sharing a screenshot on your Instagram story. Don't forget to tag @beautyislandpodcast so I can see. The skincare peel pads that get her TV and red carpet ready... Hello and welcome to Beauty Island, the award-nominated beauty podcast that celebrates life and lipstick. Today, my guest is Felicity Harley, journalist, award-winning launch editor of both Women's Health Australia and WHIMN and author of the brilliant 2020 book, Balance and other BS: How To Hold It Together When You're Doing It All. You also might have seen her on morning TV show Sunrise, on which she's been appearing as a commentator for over 10 years. We spoke a little earlier this year about her first job as entertainment editor at Girlfriend magazine in the era of spice girls, britney, christina, destiny's child... and yes she did enjoy a harbour cruise with Beyonce, the rise of wellness as a commodity, the mental load and giving up the quest for balance, and the skincare product she swears by for getting TV or red carpet ready. Oh, and you may hear references to her husband Tom when we talk about balance in relationships, yes that is Tom Harley, former AFL player and current Sydney Swans CEO - and the story of how they met which she shares is great too. Felicity's brilliant book Balance and Other BS is available to buy and read now: A note: a few things have already changed since this conversation; both WHIMN and Women's Health Australia have now unfortunately closed - we do touch a little on the state and future of the magazine industry given Felicity's career has spanned both print and digital. Along the way we find out more about their life, career and the people and events that have shaped them into who they are today. Today, my guest is Kathleen Hou, Beauty Director of The Cut. As the lifestyle, beauty and fashion site of New York magazine, it is easily one of my most visited websites. The content is sharp, smart, light, thought-provoking, nuanced, entertaining and of course informative. All descriptions that apply to Kathleen's work too. While in the midst of a worldwide lockdown, I chatted virtually me in Melbourne and Kathleen in New York to talk about how she found the courage to pursue her passion for writing after a first career in financial consulting, the concealer she's been buying since before she was a beauty editor and is still yet to be beaten, the best eyelash curler anyone with straight lashes needs to own, her tried and tested travel makeup kit for carry on, and the ultimate lipstick application hack from none other than Pat McGrath that will give you fuller looking lips without lip liner. I know that was a mouthful, but honestly she shared so many great titbits and tips, these are just the starting point! Today, my guest is Chrissy Zemura, hairstylist, colourist and salon owner of Sydney's Zemura Salon. She worked in one of Sydney's top salons before launching her own, has had work published in fashion magazines including Marie Claire, and, as a champion of inclusive hairdressing, most recently drawing attention to the fact that caring and styling afro and curly hair is not currently part of the hairdressing curriculum in Australia. That leaves black, Indigenous and people of colour deprived of skilled hair care, with hair left mistreated however well intentioned due to lack of education. The petition she started that has (updated) currently got over 40,000 signatures and Chrissy, calling for the support of the industry, is making overdue waves to change this. It takes less than a minute to sign: https://bit.ly/2QAIDXo We talked about her career shift from finance to hairdressing plus a two moves halfway around the world to make it happen, forging a new beauty attitude in an industry built on insecurities, the double standards in anti-ageing conversations, and of course, some must-know hair tips. I'm your host, beauty journalist, Brittany Stewart. And welcome to another brand new season of Beauty Island. Yep, that's season 5. If you're new here or you just need a recap: Each episode, I sit down with a guest and ask them about the 8 beauty products that have a special memory or meaning for them. The ones they'd take to a desert island, or Beauty Island, that I am sending them off too. Along the way we find out more about their life, career and the people and events that have shaped them into who they are today. Today, my guest is Jade Kisnorbo, top celebrity makeup artist and hair stylist who has worked with just about every Aussie celeb and influencer you can name. But makeup wasn't always the plan, with a career journey that's spanned two - (and a bit!) - continents and a lot of hard work, drive and passion. Now you'll catch her presenting the Beauty Buzz segment on Wellness Australia, backstage at runways and red carpet, masterclasses including at Westfield Doncaster... at that could be just one week! Jade is a makeup artist I've long admired, so it was a thrill to sit down and chat all things beauty. We talked about chasing passion, the celeb endorsed-cream that's better than La Mer, and finally an answer to what to do about under eye creasing from makeup. Plus, so many great tips and advice for both beauty and beyond. Before we get into it, I have a little favour to ask. Beauty Isolation: Shonee Fairfax, Survivor Australia11 Jun 202000:24:12
When a three week holiday turns into a four month staycation... Hello and welcome to Beauty Island, the award-nominated beauty podcast that celebrates life and lipstick. I'm your host, beauty journalist, Brittany Stewart, and this is the FINAL (!) episode of Beauty Isolation, a special mini series of Beauty Island. Normally, I ask my guests about the 8 beauty products that have a special memory or meaning for them. The ones they'd take to a desert island, or Beauty Island, that I am sending them off to. In Beauty Isolation, instead they pick the 8 products that have played a significant role in quarantine. The ones they're using, ditching or rediscovering in isolation. It has been a fascinating insight into how isolation has reshaped and affected our relationship and opinions on beauty and I hope these episodes have helped you reflect on your own, as well as act as little beauty time capsules. So, I thought it very fitting to end Beauty Isolation with a guest who already has extensive experience living on a remote island, completely isolated form the rest of the world. Today, my guest is two-time Survivor AU contestant, Shonee Fairfax. Living between Noosa and London, Shonee appeared on Season 3 and the recent All Star seasons of Survivor Australia. We talked about the best sunscreen she's ever found, how she kept up her skincare regimen on the island, and why it pays to try beauty minis before you splurge on the full size. If you enjoy Beauty Isolation, please subscribe, rate and review, and share with a friend. I'll be taking a little break and be back in August with a brand new season of Beauty Island. In the meantime, find me on Instagram @brittanybeautybts. Now, over to Shonee. Enjoy. We talk pimple treatments, underground botox, attempting an at-home brow lamination, and the perfect 'slap-on-with-your-hands' foundation alternative. Part of the reason I love their podcast is because they're not afraid to tell it like it is when it comes to beauty products, which they did so brilliantly here. Tanya Hennessy - Comedian, Radio Host & Author09 Nov 202000:53:08
Today my guest is comedian, radio host, author and Priceline Ambassador, Tanya Hennessy. You may have heard her voice on radio, seen one of her brilliant videos on social media, or maybe even caught her earlier this year on I'm A Celebrity! Get Me Out Of Here Australia. She went viral seemingly overnight in 2017 after posting a parody video called 'Everyday Makeup Tutorial'. But the story of her career and where she got to today started long before then and in an era obsessed with internet and overnight success, hers is a fascinating one. We talked cutting her own 'Rachel' haircut as a teen, the $12 mascara she claims is better than Dior's, and her funny and refreshing take on the self help genre with her second and brand new book, Help Self, out today. If you enjoy this episode, please rate and write a review on Apple Podcasts or subscribe on Spotify if you haven't already. Or recommend to a friend or many friends, by sharing a screenshot on your Instagram story. Don't forget to tag @beautyislandpodcast so I can see. The "bougie" skincare regimen magazine editors swear by... Hello and welcome to Beauty Island, the award-nominated beauty podcast that celebrates life and lipstick. I'm your host, beauty journalist, Brittany Stewart and this is another episode of Beauty Isolation, a special mini series of Beauty Island. Twice a week, we'll explore how their relationship to beauty has changed during this time, as well as conversations around self-care, how they're going, and what they're most looking forward to. Today my guest is Grace O'Neill, fashion journalist, editor and co-host of the brilliant fashion and pop-culture podcast After Work Drinks. Joining me from isolation in London, she shared the bougie skincare regimen all the magazine editors swear by (and how good it really is), Normal People and the iso-fuelled temptation for DIY bangs, her changing attitude to fashion and personal style, and the budget brow gel that's better than Glossier Boy Brow. She also shared plenty of fab book recommendations to add to your list. If you enjoy Beauty Isolation, please subscribe, rate and review, and share with a friend. Now, over to Grace. Beauty Island presents... Beauty Isolation. Why (and how) to introduce retinol into your beauty regimen... Hello and welcome to Beauty Island, the award-nominated beauty podcast that celebrates life and lipstick. I'm your host, beauty journalist, Brittany Stewart and I'm very excited to present a special mini series of Beauty Island called Beauty Isolation. So for the next few weeks, there'll be two Beauty Isolation episodes a week dropping in your feed, with a range of guests, including many from some of my favourite other podcasts. To kick us off, my first guest is content creator and skin educator Hannah English, who uses her science background to provide an important and unique take on beauty. It's earned her over 30,000 Instagram followers. We talked about why you still need to be wearing SPF in isolation (and taking it off too), an important reminder that self-care can be a lot simpler than a fancy gold leaf face mask, and why now is the perfect time to be introducing skincare ingredients like retinol into your regimen - Hannah shares her beginner's guide. BONUS: Your Guide to Gifting Fragrance03 May 202000:20:10
What's the difference between cologne, eau de toilette and eau de parfum? Hello and welcome to Beauty Island. The special mini series of Beauty Isolation will be dropping from next week, where I talk to beauty friends new and old about their beauty routines in quarantine. Today I'm excited to share a little bonus episode with you all about fragrance and gifting fragrance. I got on the phone with expert Ruth Stonier, National Training Manager at Clarins Fragrance & Beauty, who's job it is to discover, train, educate and recommend the best fit fragrances. It applies to finding one for yourself, and for a gift, but of course may be particularly helpful with Mother's Day coming up. We talked about why perfume is so strongly linked to memories, the difference between cologne and eau de toilette and eau de parfum, and where do you start when it comes to working out the right perfume to gift? *WIN* - I also have a perfume prize pack to give away for you or for you mum. Win yourself a The Blow voucher.... It's the season four FINALE! Hello and welcome to Beauty Island, the award-nominated beauty podcast that celebrates life and lipstick. I'm your host, beauty journalist, Brittany Stewart. Each episode, I sit down with a guest and ask them about the 8 beauty products that have a special memory or meaning for them. The ones they'd take to a desert island, or Beauty Island, that I am sending them off to. Maybe it's the first beauty product they ever bought, the one that gives them their signature look, or the perfume that instantly sparks a memory of a special place or person. Along the way we find out more about their life, career and the people and events that have shaped them into who they are today. This is the final episode of season four, and I couldn't think of anyone much more fitting to conclude what has been another incredible and inspiring season. The good news is that I'll be back very soon with a special series; a little tweak to the usual format I'm calling Beauty Isolation. Guests will still be talking through 8 products, but the ones they're using, ditching or rediscovering during quarantine. We'll explore how their relationship to beauty has changed during this time, as well as a host of related topics. I've hit up some old and new beauty friends for a brilliant line up and I can't wait to share it with you. Today, my guest is founder of The Blow and From The Memo, Phoebe Simmonds. She's sharp, intelligent, resilient and sitting down with her, it's quickly apparent why she is so highly regarded and liked in the beauty industry. Our chat was just a few days before COVID-19 took over the world. We talked about what she learned working in beauty and marketing all over the world for top brands including LMVH, Benefit (and even a Bono-affiliated beauty brand), the reality of burnout when you're building a business, having Julia Gillard in for a blowdry, and the sunscreen that got her on the SPF train. At the end of the episode, we talk about ways you can support businesses like The Blow during these times through gift vouchers. I know that one of the first things I'll be treating myself to is a pampering blowdry from The Blow and I would love to pass that forward to. So I have purchased a voucher that you can spend on a blowdry, dry-style or treatment once they have re-opened that I would love to give away! TO WIN: All you have to do is share a screenshot of this episode on your Instagram story or as a feed post and ensure you tag @beautyislandpodcast and @theblowaustralia to go in the running to win. Yep, just share a screenshot and tag @beautyislandpodcast and @theblowaustralia and you could win a voucher to go treat yourself to a glorious hair day at The Blow Australia. A flag that current locations when they reopen are in Melbourne or Sydney CBDs, but if you're planning to visit either of those places, again when everything is reopened, then please feel free to enter too! What happens next after a 'life-changing' reality TV show? Hello and welcome to Beauty Island, the award-nominated beauty podcast that celebrates life and lipstick. I'm your host, beauty journalist, Brittany Stewart. Each episode, I sit down with a guest and ask them about the 8 beauty products that have a special memory or meaning for them. The ones they'd take to a desert island, or Beauty Island, that I am sending them off too. Along the way we find out more about their life, career and the people and events that have shaped them into who they are today. A reminder that this interview was recorded before Corona hit so it is a virus-free zone, which hopefully you'll enjoy! Today my guest is Sara Oteri, Masterchef Australia finalist, foodie and Executive Creative Director. If you're a fan of the show, you'll definitely remember her from the 2015 season where she ended up coming 5th - young, driven, talented, determined and with brilliant curly hair. Obviously Beauty Island is a beauty-focussed podcast and I've had many beauty centred guests on the show, but I love how it can be a starting point for wider conversation, as well as an interest that is obviously not limited to people who actually work in beauty. Sara talks about the career rut that led her to Masterchef, how her love of travel has shaped and changed her food preferences, and the un-smudgeable lipstick that will withstand eating, talking and multiple coffees that she wishes she knew about during filming. One real standout from our conversation which Sara was so open about was the answer to 'what happens next'. For all the incredible opportunities and experiences that eventually came her way, she says the year immediately after Masterchef was one of the hardest of her life. It's, for want of a better phrase, an important reality check that I certainly identified with. I also have to acknowledge the completely incidental but perfect timing; the latest season of the show started this week! If it's a favourite, I hope you'll enjoy hearing about Sara's story even more. From high-flying lawyer to (equally) high-flying 'funtrepreneur'... Hello and welcome to Beauty Island, the award-nominated beauty podcast that celebrates life and lipstick. Along the way we find out more about their life, career and the people and events that have shaped them into who they are today. My usual disclaimer in these strange and unprecedented times; this interview was recorded well before Corona became a common word in our vernacular, so I hope you a) are doing ok and b) enjoy it as a virus respite. Today, my guest is Sarah Davidson, co-founder of Matcha Maiden and creator of Seize the Yay. Incredibly driven and articulate, Sarah has already had a number of careers. She doesn't do things by halves - and the results speak for themselves. Sarah shared her journey from ballerina to lawyer to entrepreneur to so-called 'funtrepreneur' and the products that have marked her beauty journey along the way. We talked about being adopted and how that's helped shape her identity, how illness led to the discovery and foundation of mega successful Matcha Maiden, her sensible and reassuring advice about taking the leap into the unknown, and the best foundation for acne-prone skin she's been wearing for 15 years. She's interviewed some incredibly successful and inspiring people on her brilliant podcast Seize The Yay, but I hope you'll find, like me, Sarah herself is equally as inspiring as as any of them. As we're forced to stay home and maybe reflect on our lives and career, I hope you'll find comfort or a spark in her story. Today, my guest is Paula Joye, journalist, content creator and founder of The Joye.com, and former editor of some of Australia's top magazines, working across Cleo, Madison, Mode and Shop Til You Drop. She is brilliant, driven, and in a true reflection of her name, utterly joyful. I caught up with Paula in Sydney to talk about working in the halcyon years of magazines after getting her start at Vogue, the musical champions that mark the chapters of her life, the shift of power from magazines to social media and the implications of that, particularly bringing up teenage daughters, and among other great recommendations, her go-to face potion for glowing skin and the best mascara for short lashes. Now, back along with her brother, she's birthed a new natural, vegan beauty brand called Alkira Skincare. We talked what it's like launching a new brand amidst a global pandemic, how a skateboarding accident as a child gave her a rude crash into beauty, the natural deodorant she swears by, and she reflects on a particularly pivotal time in her life where she sold her business, had her third child and was diagnosed with breast cancer in the space of just a few months. Does budget and more expensive makeup get made in the same factory?.... Maybe it's the first beauty product they ever bought, the one that gives them their signature look, or the perfume that instantly sparks a memory of a special place or person. Along the way we find out more about their life, career and the people and events that have shaped them into who they are today. Thank you for the feedback on last week's address of Coronavirus. Obviously even in the space of a week, things have changed dramatically. Again, while done remotely over the phone as my partner works in hospital so I've been implementing social distancing for a little while, this interview was conducted before things escalated, and as I'm trying to do with most of my episodes, does not talk about the virus. Instead, I hope it can be a brief respite for the overload but essential updates of information. Today, my guest is Sarah Laidlaw, award-winning hair and makeup artist and Hair and Makeup Director of Priceline. And I really do mean award-winning; Sarah has won Australia's prestigious Session Stylist of the Year title no less than five times. She's had work published in top local and international magazines, worked with some of the best photographers, celebrities and has experience on everything from TV shows to editorial to music videos to runways. It's been a glittering 29 years with no end in sight. It was also a complete joy to talk to someone who is so obviously passionate about what she does - you'll hear it in her voice. We talked about her inherited love for chapstick, working with celebrities, why an eyelash applicator is a complete game changer and, my favourite, she busts a popular myth about the price tag on makeup products. As Priceline celebrates its Festival of You, running until March 26, we also had a really interesting conversation about visibility of women over 40 in media and beauty advertising, and she shared an Instagram account celebrating women over 50 you need to follow. It's certainly brightening my feed. As always if you enjoy this episode, please subscribe, rate five stars and write a review. Lisa De Sanctis - See Want Shop, Lifestyle Influencer16 Mar 202000:49:16
The more-than-moisturiser so good Lisa has her husband and half his friends on it too... Hello and welcome to Beauty Island, the award-nominated beauty podcast that celebrates life and lipstick. Before I get into today's episode; a quick check-in. Obviously, we are in a very pivotal and strange period at the moment, with the COVID-19/coronavirus pandemic. It's a scary time. There's a lot of uncertainty except for one thing; it has the potential to have a knock on effect on everything and that's in addition to the primary concern of health. In Australia, we're lucky to be at a stage where we have some control or opportunity to affect what happens next. I've been toying with how to approach and talk about beauty in times like this. And this is what I've come up with. I'm aware of perspective - beauty falls way, way down the list of importance when your health, your family and friends and your livelihood is threatened. But I also know that in times like this, it can also be helpful to have moments and opportunities of escape, however briefly. Beauty Island will continue for the rest of the season, hopefully to entertain or give you a little breather from reality. The majority of the season's interviews were done before what's currently happening, so you (probably) won't hear mention of it in the episodes. Please stay safe, informed (but not overloaded) and look out for loved ones, friends, and if you can, strangers and those who are more vulnerable too. I'll be doing the same and thinking of everybody - hopefully this will be a time that will inspire community not division. ~ I'm your host, beauty journalist, Brittany Stewart. Each episode, I sit down with a guest and ask them about the 8 beauty products that have a special memory or meaning for them. The ones they'd take to a desert island, or Beauty Island, that I am sending them off too. Maybe it's the first beauty product they ever bought, the one that gives them their signature look, or the perfume that instantly sparks a memory of a special place or person. Along the way we find out more about their life, career and the people and events that have shaped them into who they are today. Today, my guest is Lisa De Sanctis, aka SeeWantShop, Australian travel, fashion and lifestyle influencer. What started as a hobby blog when she was living in London, has since turned into a full time job for the former women's health physio, with now almost 300,000 followers eager to see and her take on what to wear, what to do and where to shop. We talked the struggle to not define your worth by your follower count when your business does, positive body image on Instagram, the effects of being reposted by Khloe Kardashian and the affordable lip/eye/cheek multipurpose product she loves for travelling. Thank you for everyone who entered the competition last week - I'll be getting in contact with the winner this week! Laura Henshaw - Co-Founder, Keep It Cleaner02 Mar 202001:00:37
The life-changing fitness advice that will change the way you approach working out... Maybe it's the beauty product that defined their teens, the one they grew up watching their mum or grandma use, or the perfume that instantly sparks a memory of a special place or person. Along the way we find out more about their life, career and the people and events that have shaped them into who they are today. Today, my guest is Laura Henshaw, Co-founder of Keep It Cleaner. Keep It Cleaner, or KIC as it's affectionately referred to, is one of Australia's leading health and fitness programs aimed at women. The former model, law student and influencer founded it as an e-book with fellow model and best friend Steph Claire Smith, and in five years has grown it to a multifaceted business, including healthy treats you can find in the supermarket, that focusses on not just exercise or food, but health as a whole. You'll find no mention of diet or weight loss - a definitive decision made by the pair's own experience in the modelling industry where appearance and worth being dangerously linked. If you're one of Laura's quarter of a million followers on Instagram alone, no doubt you'll no doubt have an idea of a passionate, bubbly, beautiful and success person. From this interview, I can confirm it's entirely accurate. Positive, honest, kind and generous, Laura welcomed me into her Melbourne home with open arms to explore her relationship with beauty, health, relationships and a hobby that turned into a lucrative business. We talked about her struggle to separate her value from her looks in the early years of modelling, dealing with the trolling that comes with having a public profile, finding the motivation to put your health first, the go-to sheet mask she swears by for moments of self-care, and her secret Dj-ing past. She was candid, honest and full of valuable advice and insights that we could all be reminded of. As always if you enjoy this episode, please subscribe, rate five stars and write a review. The World's First Makeup Museum - Co-Founder, Doreen Bloch24 Feb 202000:28:10
A museum dedicated to makeup is opening soon.. what's involved and why, given makeup's 10,000 year history, is it only happening now? Hello and welcome to Beauty Island, the award-nominated beauty podcast that celebrates life and lipstick. I'm your host, beauty journalist, Brittany Stewart. The premise of Beauty Island is simple - Each episode, I sit down with a guest and ask them about the 8 beauty products that have a special memory or meaning for them. The ones they'd take to a desert island, or Beauty Island, that I am sending them off too. Maybe it's the beauty product that defined their teens, the one they grew up watching their mum or grandma use, or the perfume that instantly sparks a memory of a special place or person. Along the way we find out more about their life, career and the people and events that have shaped them into who they are today. But, after all that, today is something a little bit different. In this episode, you will hear my interview with co-founder of the world's first makeup museum, opening up in New York in May, Doreen Bloch. I was originally going to drop this as a bonus episode but the conversation ended up so interesting and really went to the heart of what Beauty Island is about that I wanted to instead release this as a main episode. So please excuse the slightly different format. A note - thank you for all your feedback last season on phone versus in person interviews. Hopefully you'll notice most of this season has and will be in person but as Doreen is in the US and I am in Melbourne and I really wanted to talk to her about this venture, this is a rare exception. I won't give too much away, but in my chat with Doreen we talked about how on earth a museum dedicated to the history of makeup has not existed before, where on earth you start given makeup's 10,000 year history, some of the amazing pieces and cultural history she's discovered along the way - like why a lipstick is called a lipstick bullet, that blew my mind - and of course, when you can visit yourself. The Founder of Poshly Cosmetics Founder & Beauty Expert, Doreen is someone who knows the makeup space intimately, working in the industry, providing consumer insights to some of the biggest beauty brands. So she was the perfect person, as she put it, to beauty nerd out together. If you enjoy this or any episode of Beauty Island, I have a little favour to ask. If you aren't, please subscribe, rate five stars and if you're listening on Apple Podcasts, write a little review about why you enjoy the podcast. It takes just a few seconds and means the world to me. Or you can recommend to a friend! Or a casual acquaintance! Or a total stranger standing beside you on the bus. And you can take a screenshot, share it on your Instagram story and tag me @beautyislandpodcast so I can see where you're listening. Now, over to Doreen. That's it for Season 3 + my new Christmas podcast, A Christmas Binge02 Dec 201900:04:15
A little different message from me today, to say it is that time; yes, Beauty Island season three has finished! I hope you enjoyed the season, with incredible guests from London to Adelaide, Sydney and Melbourne in between. But, do not fear - because I have another podcast to tide you over until Beauty Island returns in 2020. And if you love Christmas, then you will love... A Christmas Binge. (And yes, the first episode is out today!) Subscribe on Apple Podcasts or Spotify now. Thank you so much for your support of Beauty Island this season and beyond. Until next year, bye bye! Newsletter for no BS beauty reviews, tips and tricks. (It's free!) Sound effects obtained from Zapsplat Music: Dexter Britain ~~~~~ Deck the halls and jingle your... bells because this podcast is about to get real festive Welcome to A Christmas Binge, your new favourite Christmas listening tradition. Last year, as a podcast fanatic, I desperately wanted to find something festive to add to my podcast rotation in December to get me in the mood. (Because playing Michale Buble's Christmas album on repeat during the day just wasn't enough). I couldn't find anything, so this year I made the decision to make it myself. Christmas goodwill or purely selfish, you decide. A Christmas Binge is all about celebrating the spirit of the season by chatting to interesting people to find out how they celebrate. Each episode, I'll sit down with someone and ask them about their Christmas Binges - the show or film they watch religiously to get them in the festive mood, their other Christmas Binge in terms of what goes on the dinner table come Christmas Day and they eat, and of course, their unique Christmas traditions. Episodes will drop each week in the lead up to Christmas to get you in the mood. We'll talk Christmas films and TV specials, the foods we love and love to hate, memories of Christmas past and nosey in on their sometimes wonderful and often wacky Christmas traditions. Whether you're obsessed with Christmas as me, or you couldn't care less, I hope you'll join me and my guests as we reminisce and discuss and maybe get into a slightly heated argument about the best Christmas film of all time - (yes, the right answer is The Holiday). A Christmas Binge, your new favourite podcast this December, out now. Search "A Christmas Binge" on Spotify or Apple Podcasts and follow the Christmas meme instagram account @achristmasbinge.
Kirsten Carriol - Founder and CEO, Lanolips25 Nov 201900:52:42
What does it really take to be successful in business? And what's the grown-up musky perfume this beauty expert wants her kids to remember her by? Hello and welcome back to Beauty Island, the beauty podcast that celebrates life and lipstick. I'm your host, beauty journalist, Brittany Stewart. Each episode, I sit down with a guest and ask them about the 8 beauty products that have a special memory or meaning for them. The ones they'd take to a desert island, or Beauty Island, that I am sending them off too. Maybe it's the beauty product that defined their teens, the one they grew up watching their mum or grandma use, or the perfume that instantly sparks a memory of a special place or person. Along the way we find out more about their life, career and the people and events that have shaped them into who they are today. If you've listened since the beginning or to a few episodes of Beauty Island, you'll have noticed that certain products get mentioned multiple times by different people. And there's one product that has been selected the most as people's desert island essential; Lanolips. A lanolin-based multipurpose ointment from a South Australian brand that can be used for just about anything you can think of. So it is my absolute pleasure to have founder of Lano, Kirsten Carriol, as this week's beauty Island guest. I was hoping to sit down in Sydney with Kirsten in person but being in Melbourne makes it a little difficult and I really wanted to bring you this chat as soon as possible so I was very lucky to get her early one morning over the phone - and I have to say this is possibly one of my favourite interviews I've done this year. I've listened to it a few times now during the editing process and each time I hear a new nugget of gold; so I hope you feel the same. Before she became the founder and CEO of an internally beloved beauty brand stocked by pretty much by the biggest beauty retailers around the world including Mecca, Priceline, Sephora and Net-A-Porter, Kirsten worked in beauty PR, launching the likes of Laura Mercier and St Tropez into Australia. That foundation, plus grandparents who were farmers and parents who are scientists in hindsight seems like the perfect formula for what she would go on to do; Turning the uncool ingredient of Lano into a highly successful beauty business. We talked about the risk of keeping a product so simple yet effective, the foundation and concealer combo she swears by to hide dark circles, the moment she discovered the grown up version of her musky teenage The Body Shop scent, and what she thinks of the likes of Drew Barrymore, Kim Kardashian, Rosie Huntington-Whitely and Chelsea Handler loving her products Playful chat about beauty but also was very candid about the relentless pace of running a successful business and the truth about that elusive work/life/balance. We spoke about the underrated value of kindness in business which was something that was shining from Kirsten even over the phone. So generous with her time and wisdom. I hope you enjoy our chat. As always, If you enjoy listening to Beauty island, please subscribe, and rate and review on Apple Podcasts. If you're on instagram, take a screenshot and share it on your stories so I can see where you're listening from - just tag me at @beautyislandpodcast. Now, over to Kirsten. Enjoy. What's it like to go into labour while getting your eyelash extensions done? Why should you splurge on exxy serums but skip the cleansers? And what's the dry shampoo this beauty editor swears by? Well, listen on... Today's my guest is Alexis Teasdale, former Beauty Director of Cosmopolitan, Editor of Cosmo Bride and founder of The Festive Co, a styling service, party and all-round bonanza source of inspiration. This intro has actually taken me far longer than I should have because I got lost down the rabbit-hole of events they've done. May I recommend you start with Lex's own wedding. This episode was special because if you've listened to Beauty Island before, you might have heard her name already, mentioned by previous guest Amy Starr as they are former colleagues and best friends. It was really a demonstration of connection and proof that you should be nice to everyone you cross paths with, as we also link back to other former BI guests including Sarah Tarca and Lisa Patulny. So if you are wanting to listen to more episodes after this one, I highly recommend those. Anyway, we talk about how a book-obsessed girl from Adelaide landed at some of Australia's most iconic mags including Dolly, Cosmopolitan and Instyle, going into labour while getting eyelash extensions, some brilliant party tips and the dry shampoo as a mum of three she swears by. What is mineral makeup? And how do you fake tan without leaving the giveaway signs on your hands? Today's guest has the answers to both... Today's my guest is Victoria Curtis, founder of Australian makeup brand Victoria Curtis Cosmetics and Curtis Collection, a brand with hundreds of stockists around the country. Each time I sit down to an episode of Beauty Island, I am continually blown away by my guests. Their willingness to share their stories, firstly, but also just the incredible strength, wisdom, positivity and dogged determination they have. Victoria is one of those again. She's been someone I've been in contact with for a while, so it was so good to finally have her over one grey Saturday morning for non-stop beauty chat. We talked about her early interaction with the transformative power of beauty, the gap she identified after working at L'Oreal for a makeup brand that was actually good for your skin, and she shared the best fake tan tip for your hands I've ever heard. Do you really need sheet masks for your bum? And what's the reality of being a beauty expert over 50 on Instagram? Hello and welcome back to Beauty Island, the beauty podcast that celebrates life and lipstick. I'm your host, beauty journalist, Brittany Stewart. Along the way we find out more about their life, career and the people and events that have shaped them into who they are today. Today's episode is the last of my london series that I recorded when i was in the UK the other month. My guest is Jane Cunningham, who you might know as a british beauty blogger. Or rather The British Beauty Blogger. She has almost 40,000 Instagram followers, with hundreds of thousands of views on the blog she started over a decade ago. She's written for The Guardian, The Financial Times, Metro, The Express and many more. She very kindly offered to come to me in London when I was staying with my cousins - shoutout to Andy and Miki for letting me turn their living room into a pop up podcast studio!. The sun was shining on an August weekday when we spent an hour on the sofa chatting all things beauty. We talked how influencer and makeup brand collaborations really work, why red lipstick isn't for her, the ridiculousness of face masks for your bum, and had one of the most interesting discussions I've ever had on the attitude the beauty industry has towards older women and whether it's changing. Plus, she shares her 8 chosen products including the extortionately expensive lip balm that she just can't stop buying. Nadine Baggott - YouTuber and Celebrity Beauty Editor (UK)07 Oct 201901:14:54
Is neck cream a complete waste of money? Is the science or the marketing of a beauty product more important? And what's the foolproof eyeliner Nadine's been using for years? Listen to find out... Maybe it's the product that reminds them of their mum, the beauty product that defined their teens or the perfume that instantly sparks a memory of a special place or person. Along the way we find out more about their life, career and the people and events that have shaped them into who they are today. I'm very excited to share today's episode with celebrity beauty editor, TV presenter, YouTuber, and one of my favourite beauty content creators, Nadine Baggott . As I mentioned last week, it's one I did when I was in London. I slid into Nadine's DMs, not expecting to hear back, and within a few hours we'd set a date to meet up at her agent's office to chat. In a world of 20-something beauty youtubers, Nadine, in her mid 50s, does beauty for grown ups, as she calls it. After 18 years as a celebrity beauty editor at Hello Magazine - and does she have some stories including being told to fuck off by Kate Moss and sued by Naomi Campbell - frustrated by the slow uptake of print media to the digital space, she started a youtube channel. She now has over 100,000 YouTube subscribers and is represented by Gleam Futures, the same talent management as Zoella, Pixiwoo, Louise Pentland, and many more. It was in their office we met, a bustling place near Tottenham Court Road. Nadine is tall, confident, cool and utterly charming. You can see why she's such a brilliant journalist - warm, open, funny and able to instantly put you at ease. This is a slightly longer episode than normal but for good reason. We covered so many topics in the beauty industry, with Nadine offering a no BS, upfront take on it all from why she hates the term 'clean' beauty and the battle between science and marketing in the beauty industry to whether expensive and cheap makeup is all coming from the same factory. Bet your ears pricked up at that! She shares the 8 (plus a few more!) beauty products that have a special memory for her, why neck creams are a complete waste of money and the face product that's confidence in a tube. As always, If you enjoy this episode, please subscribe to the podcast, rate five stars and write a review on Apple Podcasts. It really helps other people find the podcast. And share and tag me on your Instagram stories too - I love reposting and seeing where you're listening. Ava Matthews - Co-founder of Ultra Violette30 Sep 201900:55:44
Hello and welcome back to Beauty Island, the beauty podcast that celebrates life and lipstick. I'm your host, beauty journalist, Brittany Stewart. It's been a while. A few months to be exact. As I alluded to in the last episode of season two, I was taking a little break. In fact, i quit my job, packed my bags and went travelling for three and a half months around Europe. To be cliched, it was one of those trips of a lifetime. Spent in the company of old friends, new friends, family but largely myself. I ate and drank my way through France, Italy and Spain. I wandered for days around the galleries of Vienna, Amsterdam, Paris and London, soaking up art, fashion and beauty history from Mary Quant, Yves Saint Laurent, Helena Rubenstein, Gustav Klimt, Rodin and Van Gogh. I even may have done a few Beauty Island interviews along the way. But after a summer of self-indulgence, self-discovery and cultural exploration, on the one year anniversary of launch this passion project podcast, I am back and so excited to kick off season three. A reminder of exactly what we do here. Each episode, I sit down with a guest and ask them about the 8 beauty products that have a special memory or meaning for them. The ones they'd take to a desert island, or Beauty Island, that I am sending them off too. Maybe it's the product that reminds them of their mum, the beauty product that defined their teens or the perfume that instantly sparks a memory of a special place or person. Along the way we find out more about their life, career and the people and events that have shaped them into who they are today. Today my guest is Ava Matthews. Now, this is an interview I did before I left. But as we firmly leap into Spring with Summer more than a glimmer of warm hope in the distance, in Australia at least, it's the perfect time to releawse it. Where to begin with Ava? She's had such an interesting career - from working in beauty PR to developing product at Mecca Cosmetica to co-founding skinscreen (that's sunscreen and skincare FYI) brand Ultra Violette. If you follow any Aussie beauty bloggers on Instagram, you'll probably have seen it on your feed as everyone is raving about this sunscreen disrupter. I actually used their Supreme Screen sunscreen every day while I was in Europe, and can say hand on heart its one of the best facial sunscreens I've ever tried. It also works brilliantly as a primer under makeup too. Anyway, enough about me. In this episode, Ava talks about her slightly different childhood growing up with a beauty editor mum and fashion photographer dad - after all it's not everyone who wakes up to see Naomi Campbell in their garden! - working in PR in New York and finding out it's nothing likes Samantha Jones made it out to be, why buying perfume on holiday is always a good idea and the story behind co-founding latest venture, Ultra Violette. Plus, much more. If you enjoy this episode, please subscribe to the podcast if you're not already, rate five stars and write a review on Apple Podcasts. It helps other people find us and means I can keep on creating Beauty Island for you! Now, over to Ava. Enjoy. Today, my guest is model, journalist and presenter Jessica Vander Leahy. The founder of Project Womenkind and the creator of podcast The Affirmation Project, Jess has so many strings to her bow, is smart, funny and extremely talented. A little note from me.03 Jun 201900:04:06
Yes, that's it for Season 2 of Beauty Island! We're taking a little (ok, well a little bit more than a little) break until August as I do the classic mid-twenties thing and go travelling for a few months around Europe to 'find myself'. (Just kidding. Kinda.) I appreciate it's quite a while to go without a podcast but rest assured when Beauty Island returns it will be for another big season of incredible local and international guests. (And in fact, if there's someone you'd love to hear on the podcast now is the time to tell me! Email me beautyislandpodcast@gmail.com or send me a message on Instagram @beautyislandpodcast.) Thank you so much for your support of the podcast so far. We've hit the charts, been featured by Apple and nominated for an Australian Podcast Award. But the biggest achievement for me is knowing that you enjoy what I'm creating and your messages and reviews make me grin like an idiot. So thank YOU! Until we return, why not scroll through the feed and listen (or re-listen!) to episodes from the last two seasons? Whether you want career advice from the women who've built big beauty brands, want to know what it's really like to be a top Beauty or Fashion Editor, are after the goss about influencers and beauty bloggers, or fancy taking a peek into the makeup kits of professional makeup artists, there are so many great guests to choose from. In the meantime, you can also follow Beauty Island on Instagram @beautyislandpodcast. And if you're interested in the beauty side of my travels (the products I'm using etc and maybe a cheeky scenery shot) you can follow me on my personal beauty Instagram account @brittanybeautybts. Thank you and until next time... bye bye!

And if you're interested or curious about influencer culture, she is upfront and honest in her answers to all the questions you've secretly wondered but haven't wanted to ask. I went to Day Management's offices in Melbourne to chat to Gen about how much influencers can really earn, how the landscape has changed since she launched Day Management and what the future may look like, and the $19 black eyeliner that will give you flawless wings.
