Beauty Island tells stories of memories sparked by beauty products. Host Brittany Stewart gets inside the minds (and beauty cabinets) of well-known figures inside and outside the beauty industry. Each episode, guests will be asked to share the eight beauty products that have a special meaning to them. Maybe it's the lipstick their mum used to apply on a night out, the first beauty product they ever bought themselves, or the perfume that instantly brings back memories of a special occasion. We'll discover more about their career, relationships, family, challenges and everything in between, bookmarked by the beauty products that have helped shape their lives. It's a celebration of life - and lipstick.

Rachael Akhidenor - Founder, Self Care Originals

lundi 23 novembre 2020Duration 01:08:40

Beauty Island acknowledges and pays respect to the past, present and future Traditional Custodians and Elders of this nation and the continuation of cultural, spiritual and educational practices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Hello and welcome to Beauty Island, the award-nominated beauty podcast that celebrates life and lipstick. I'm your host, beauty journalist, Brittany Stewart. If you're new here or you just need a recap: Each episode, I sit down with a guest and ask them about the 8 beauty products that have a special memory or meaning for them. The ones they'd take to a desert island, or Beauty Island, that I am sending them off too. Maybe it's the first beauty product they ever bought, the one that gives them their signature look, or the perfume that instantly sparks a memory of a special place or person. Along the way we find out more about their life, career and the people and events that have shaped them into who they are today. And today, we have come to the season finale of Season 5 of Beauty Island! Gosh, it's been a strange year, but I'm so grateful for all your support with two seasons and that special Lockdown series. As I mentioned last week, Beauty Island was a finalist for Best Arts and Culture Podcast, which for an independent podcast run by just me, is a huge huge honour. And I couldn't do it without you! So thank you. I'll be taking a bit of a break over summer and returning in 2021 BUT the good news is that my Christmas podcast, A Christmas Binge, is returning for a second year! A fun and festive listen that looks at what we watch, what we eat and how we celebrate with interesting guests, the first episode will drop early december with some stellar guests so keep your eyes and ears out for that. I'll put a link to subscribe in the shownotes. Onto this season finale, today my guest is founder of Self Care Originals, Rachael Akhidenor. Described as a social enterprise disrupting the wellness industry by advocating for self care for all, Self Care Originals's current form is wearable activism and a content platform, but as you'll hear in this interview, it's just the beginning for the brilliant inclusive platform Rachael is building. I thought it particularly fitting to end the season and the year with this interview with Rachael, in arguably a year where we've talked about the concept of 'self-care' more than ever. In an insightful and thought-provoking chat, we talked about what self care actually means vs what we're sold it should be, what the wellness industry needs to do to welcome more diversity, her love of blush, and the affordable and unexpected oil she says is a gamechanger for dry skin. If you enjoy this episode, please rate and write a review on Apple Podcasts or subscribe on Spotify if you haven't already. Or recommend to a friend or many friends, by sharing a screenshot on your Instagram story. Don't forget to tag @beautyislandpodcast so I can see. As an independent podcaster, those things really help more people discover the podcast so I can keep making it for you! Now, over to Rachael. Enjoy. Gyan Yankovich - Editor & Journalist (Junkee, Man Repeller, Buzzfeed, Cosmopolitan, Cleo & Dolly)

Beauty Island acknowledges and pays respect to the past, present and future Traditional Custodians and Elders of this nation and the continuation of cultural, spiritual and educational practices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Along the way we find out more about their life, career and the people and events that have shaped them into who they are today. An exciting announcement that Beauty Island has been nominated for an Australian Podcast Award! Yey! We're a finalist for Best Arts and Culture podcast, with the winner announced Saturday 21st November. So keep your fingers and toes crossed for me, and whether you've listened to one episode or all of them, I just wanted to say thank you to you so much for your support of the podcast. But enough about that for now! And on to today's episode. Today my guest is editor and journalist, Gyan Yankovich. Now a little disclaimer that this interview was recorded earlier this year, in May. Now that's a few months in normal times, but in 2020? Well, let's just say a lot has changed. When we recorded, Gyan was living in New York in the midst for a terrifying first wave and strict lockdown. She was also the managing editor of renowned fashion turned culture site, Man Repeller. Since we spoke, there have been a succession of changes - a callout, a redesign and then, most recently, the announcement of the closure of the site. For more context read this. Before that, Gyan moved back to Australia and is now the Managing Editor of Junkee. If you grew up reading Aussie magazines in the 20teens, you'll no doubt recognise Gyan's face. Born in Bathurst, before moving to Sydney to pursue a career in the glossy world of magazines, Gyan was a beauty editor for the likes of Cleo, Cosmo and Dolly before moving to digital to help form Buzzfeed Australia's founding team. She is brilliant, talented and she has the best and longest natural lashes I have ever seen. We talked through the mascaras that bookmark her beauty journey, the legend of the office tanning salon for beauty editors, applying foundation with your fingers and what exactly are the Saturday spirals. Now, over to Gyan. The skincare peel pads that get her TV and red carpet ready... Hello and welcome to Beauty Island, the award-nominated beauty podcast that celebrates life and lipstick. Along the way we find out more about their life, career and the people and events that have shaped them into who they are today. Today, my guest is Felicity Harley, journalist, award-winning launch editor of both Women's Health Australia and WHIMN and author of the brilliant 2020 book, Balance and other BS: How To Hold It Together When You're Doing It All. You also might have seen her on morning TV show Sunrise, on which she's been appearing as a commentator for over 10 years. We spoke a little earlier this year about her first job as entertainment editor at Girlfriend magazine in the era of spice girls, britney, christina, destiny's child... and yes she did enjoy a harbour cruise with Beyonce, the rise of wellness as a commodity, the mental load and giving up the quest for balance, and the skincare product she swears by for getting TV or red carpet ready. Oh, and you may hear references to her husband Tom when we talk about balance in relationships, yes that is Tom Harley, former AFL player and current Sydney Swans CEO - and the story of how they met which she shares is great too. Felicity's brilliant book Balance and Other BS is available to buy and read now: A note: a few things have already changed since this conversation; both WHIMN and Women's Health Australia have now unfortunately closed - we do touch a little on the state and future of the magazine industry given Felicity's career has spanned both print and digital. The eyelash curler anyone with straight eyelashes needs to try... Along the way we find out more about their life, career and the people and events that have shaped them into who they are today. Today, my guest is Kathleen Hou, Beauty Director of The Cut. As the lifestyle, beauty and fashion site of New York magazine, it is easily one of my most visited websites. The content is sharp, smart, light, thought-provoking, nuanced, entertaining and of course informative. All descriptions that apply to Kathleen's work too. While in the midst of a worldwide lockdown, I chatted virtually me in Melbourne and Kathleen in New York to talk about how she found the courage to pursue her passion for writing after a first career in financial consulting, the concealer she's been buying since before she was a beauty editor and is still yet to be beaten, the best eyelash curler anyone with straight lashes needs to own, her tried and tested travel makeup kit for carry on, and the ultimate lipstick application hack from none other than Pat McGrath that will give you fuller looking lips without lip liner. I know that was a mouthful, but honestly she shared so many great titbits and tips, these are just the starting point! Today, my guest is Chrissy Zemura, hairstylist, colourist and salon owner of Sydney's Zemura Salon. She worked in one of Sydney's top salons before launching her own, has had work published in fashion magazines including Marie Claire, and, as a champion of inclusive hairdressing, most recently drawing attention to the fact that caring and styling afro and curly hair is not currently part of the hairdressing curriculum in Australia. That leaves black, Indigenous and people of colour deprived of skilled hair care, with hair left mistreated however well intentioned due to lack of education. The petition she started that has (updated) currently got over 40,000 signatures and Chrissy, calling for the support of the industry, is making overdue waves to change this. It takes less than a minute to sign: https://bit.ly/2QAIDXo We talked about her career shift from finance to hairdressing plus a two moves halfway around the world to make it happen, forging a new beauty attitude in an industry built on insecurities, the double standards in anti-ageing conversations, and of course, some must-know hair tips. If you're new here or you just need a recap: Each episode, I sit down with a guest and ask them about the 8 beauty products that have a special memory or meaning for them. The ones they'd take to a desert island, or Beauty Island, that I am sending them off too. Along the way we find out more about their life, career and the people and events that have shaped them into who they are today. Today, my guest is Jade Kisnorbo, top celebrity makeup artist and hair stylist who has worked with just about every Aussie celeb and influencer you can name. But makeup wasn't always the plan, with a career journey that's spanned two - (and a bit!) - continents and a lot of hard work, drive and passion. Now you'll catch her presenting the Beauty Buzz segment on Wellness Australia, backstage at runways and red carpet, masterclasses including at Westfield Doncaster... at that could be just one week! Jade is a makeup artist I've long admired, so it was a thrill to sit down and chat all things beauty. We talked about chasing passion, the celeb endorsed-cream that's better than La Mer, and finally an answer to what to do about under eye creasing from makeup. Plus, so many great tips and advice for both beauty and beyond. Before we get into it, I have a little favour to ask. Beauty Isolation: Shonee Fairfax, Survivor Australia

jeudi 11 juin 2020Duration 24:12

When a three week holiday turns into a four month staycation... Hello and welcome to Beauty Island, the award-nominated beauty podcast that celebrates life and lipstick. I'm your host, beauty journalist, Brittany Stewart, and this is the FINAL (!) episode of Beauty Isolation, a special mini series of Beauty Island. Normally, I ask my guests about the 8 beauty products that have a special memory or meaning for them. The ones they'd take to a desert island, or Beauty Island, that I am sending them off to. In Beauty Isolation, instead they pick the 8 products that have played a significant role in quarantine. The ones they're using, ditching or rediscovering in isolation. It has been a fascinating insight into how isolation has reshaped and affected our relationship and opinions on beauty and I hope these episodes have helped you reflect on your own, as well as act as little beauty time capsules. So, I thought it very fitting to end Beauty Isolation with a guest who already has extensive experience living on a remote island, completely isolated form the rest of the world. Today, my guest is two-time Survivor AU contestant, Shonee Fairfax. Living between Noosa and London, Shonee appeared on Season 3 and the recent All Star seasons of Survivor Australia. We talked about the best sunscreen she's ever found, how she kept up her skincare regimen on the island, and why it pays to try beauty minis before you splurge on the full size. If you enjoy Beauty Isolation, please subscribe, rate and review, and share with a friend. I'll be taking a little break and be back in August with a brand new season of Beauty Island. In the meantime, find me on Instagram @brittanybeautybts. Now, over to Shonee. Enjoy.
