Criticism as a Love Letter with Laura Robertson
Season 2 ¡ Episode 9
mardi 3 septembre 2024 ⢠Duration 45:11
*Currently pepping myself up to write the copy for today's episode*
Let writing into your life...
We chat with Laura Robertson, a working-class art critic, writer, editor and award-winning lecturer based in Liverpool, represented by United Agents, London. She co-founded The Double Negative online arts magazine with Mike Pinnington in 2011, and has been commissioning and platforming under-the-radar people, projects and places ever since â including under-represented and early-career culture writers from the North of England.Â
This episode is, as you may expect, all about WRITING. Writing doesn't always feel like it fits into an art practice, but Laura tells us all about how letting writing into your life and art can be transformative in more ways than one.

Getting Our Bums Out for Erwin Wurm at Yorkshire Sculpture Park
dimanche 14 juillet 2024 ⢠Duration 24:42
There's a wurm at the bottom of the garden and we got wiggly at the largest sculpture park in Europe. We chat about bodies, bums and bloody tomfoolery at one of our favourite places to see art AND one of our favourite artists. Aren't we lucky baby duckies. Enjoy!
Here's the craic, make some time to visit this, it's ace:
Erwin Wurm: Trap of the Truth
Sat 10 Jun 2023 â Sun 28 Apr 2024
Underground Gallery, Outdoors
Trap of the Truth features more than 100 works, including 55 sculptures indoors, 19 sculptures in the landscape, paintings, photographs, videos and drawings created over 30 years of the artistâs career. Several works are being shown for the first time.
Erwin Wurm (b.1954) is one of Austriaâs most prominent artists, highly regarded for his 2017 Austrian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale. Over three decades he has challenged the rules of sculpture, the limitations of the human body, and its relationship to the spaces we inhabit. His work disrupts perceptions of the familiar and sensible and in a process that abounds with humour and experimentation, he frequently reimagines commonplace objects by giving them human characteristics. Wurm ponders what sculpture is and what it can be, stretching its boundaries, and calling into question the value and importance we place on everyday objects. He is both playful and political, using ludicrous scenarios to create work that addresses how we conform to societyâs demands and how sculpture can upend cultural beliefs.

Keeping Cosy at Barter Books
vendredi 22 dÊcembre 2023 ⢠Duration 31:28
We have now entered a period of non-time. The norms of the before or future time do not apply here. Nobody knows what day it is, whatâs expected of them, what life was like before. Thereâs only now, and who honestly wants to hear about yet another exhibition?
So, we took ourselves to the most wholesome bookshop and give you something to listen to while cosied up by the fireplace, whether IRL or via Netflixâs show âFireplace for your Homeâ đĽ
Here's the lowdown:
Barter Books is a second-hand bookshop in the historic English market town of Alnwick, Northumberland, owned and run by Stuart and Mary Manley. It has over 350,000 visitors a year, 40% of whom are from outside the area, and is one of the largest second-hand bookshops in Europe. It is considered a local tourist attraction and has been described as "the British Library of second-hand bookshops."

Peeling Potatoes with Marina AbramoviÄ at Southbank Centre
jeudi 26 octobre 2023 ⢠Duration 34:21
Properly weird performance at Southbank Centre and we loved every second. Peeling potatoes, chucking nails, melting ice, cutting plasterboard, the works. We chat meeting the big M herself and what we found in the nooks and crannies of the Southbank. Bellissimo!Â
Here's what we saw:
Marina AbramoviÄ Institute Takeover
The entire Queen Elizabeth Hall â backstage and all â transforms into the set for enthralling durational performances, curated by conceptual artist Marina AbramoviÄ and MAI.
The performances use the entirety of the Queen Elizabeth Hall, and is self-led, letting you explore all parts of the building, including the auditorium, Purcell Room, backstage dressing rooms, green rooms, technical spaces and foyer.
The artists have all been invited to make site-specific, long-durational work. They engage with endurance, presence and participation, creating an infinite possibility of encounters between visitors and artists.
The artists featured are Collective Absentia, Carla Adra, Cassils, Paula Garcia, Miles Greenberg, Sandra Johnston, Carlos Martiel, Yiannis Pappas, Paul SetĂşbal, Aleksandar Timotic and Despina Zacharopoulou.
