 Episode Show notes timestamps:

👨‍🏫 [01:32] Rob’s origin story is fueled by a passion for connecting with students.: being a teenage drumming teacher and evolving into an educator.

🤕 [05:19] The car accident that changed everything: how physical trauma led him to martial arts, Tai Chi, and Qigong as healing tools.

☯️ [10:11] Rob’s approach to reducing classroom stress: Kung fu and Qigong in class for kids, teachers, and even parents - balance is needed for all.

🎓 [16:51] Rob’s critique of standardized education: There are unmeasurable types of intelligence that are very important.

☮️ [21:31] Stressed teachers create stressed students—and why supporting educators is the first step.

🧠 [24:44] Teachers are not trained to work with ADHD kids: the system forces them to sit still for 7 hours and breath; movement and focus can fix this.

😮‍💨 [30:56] Teach kids diaphragmatic breathing to self-regulate (e.g., "Inhale for 4, exhale for 8").

💎 [33:28] Connection makes him tick, and if we connect teachers and students to their bodies, the changes will be amazing.

E204: Leanne Linsky - Saying YES to opportunity20 Apr 202300:33:40

Learn more about Plauzzable at:  https://plauzzable.com/

Leanne is the Founder and CEO of Plauzzable, a live online entertainment platform for transforming engagement between comedians and their fans. Give and get laughs - LIVE stand up comedy from anywhere!

Originally from Waukegan, Illinois, Leanne studied comedy at the Upright Citizens Brigade, the Magnet Theater, The Second City, and IO Chicago. In New York City, she wrote, performed, and produced her critically acclaimed one-woman show, produced and hosted a comedy open mic for over 7 years, and produced and hosted a weekly stand-up show.

In 2015 Leanne moved to California where she continued producing shows, opened an online store, and co-hosted a podcast. While it was fun, she missed the opportunities and connections that New York offered her as an aspiring artist. Because everything in California is so spread out, Leanne found herself spending more time on the freeway than on stage.

In August 2019 BC (before COVID), she began using existing technologies to host an online open mic. This allowed her to spend more time honing her skills and less time struggling with time and money. After a few months, her regularly participating comedians suggested that she charge them for the service. It was then that she knew she was onto something.

Leanne has earned a Master of Innovation & Entrepreneurship (MIE) degree at the University of California, Irvine. She has a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Leanne is also a Professional Certified Coach (PCC) with the International Coaching Federation (ICF) and with CoachVille.

E199: Denise Vitola - Dream Higher16 Mar 202300:34:17

Learn more about Denise at:

Denise Vitola | LinkedIn

Vitola Strategies | Public Relations | Corporate Communications

Marketing & Communications pro and celebrated health coach Denise Vitola wakes up every day on a mission to make people feel healthier and stronger. A slew of awards, industry-wide admiration and years of personal and professional accomplishments are proof that she gets the job done.
A New Jersey native who studied in Italy and Greece before graduating from Rowan University, Denise kicked off her career in sports marketing at Alan Taylor Communications, where she immediately plugged in to the thrill of a fast-paced environment, high-profile celebrity clients, and travel to sporting events around the world. She jokes that she moved from the “locker room” of sports marketing to the “cheerleading team” of the tech sector when she started as Account Director at Kaplow. While developing innovative campaigns for iconic digital brands like PayPal, eBay and Netflix, her nimble thinking and inspirational leadership made it clear that Denise was more than a standout member of the squad; she was ready to manage the team. But unlike leaders who move up and away from the heart of ideation and execution, Denise was determined to remain a key creative player at every step of the development process.

That was evident when she moved to MWW as Vice President and Director of Sports Marketing, overseeing the Bank of America account. Denise developed landmark integrated marketing strategies like the award-winning “Keep the Change” campaign that invited passersby everywhere from Grand Central Station to NFL games to dive into a giant couch and find change that could be exchanged for prizes. At the same time, she continued to hone her signature leadership style: a risk-taker confident in her skills and her talent; deeply involved in every account, but knowing when to step back and let her team shine.

In 2006, Denise was recruited by Ogilvy to work on some of the biggest accounts in the marketing game: J&J, Unilever and TJX. She worked closely with powerhouse Barby Siegal, who, like mentors Jane Mazur and Maureen Lippe, taught Denise how to be fearless in her craft. She quickly found herself leaning in to untapped marketing opportunities in digital and social, certain it was the core of connection with consumers. It was at MSL Group that Denise applied the full power of her creativity and process to the #1 marketer in the world, P&G. She became a social media savant, taking big swings that led to big payoffs, and increasing revenue by over 80%. In 2013 Denise moved to MSL Atlanta, where she coached her team to create innovative digital campaigns for clients like Home Depot.

Returning to New York in 2014, Denise had an a-ha moment of her own: every day she was helping the world become stronger and healthier through marketing. She felt that brands had a responsibility to do just that. But what about her own passion for health and wellness…the joys of fitness, nutrition and teamwork that led her to work in sports marketing at the very beginning of her career? Denise made two big moves: she got certified in nutrition and as a health coach (Vitola Well); and she launched her own marketing consultancy, Vitola Strategies. Denise was not only well-ing the world, she was well-ing herself, and the result was transformational. In 2016 she won PR Campaign of the Year for Abbott Similac “Sisterhood of Motherhood”; and in 2017, she was named a Women’s Health magazine Action Hero. To this day Denise teaches three spin classes a week, unwilling to forgo the psychological and physiological boost that powers her body, mind and soul.

Many of Denise’s former clients followed her to Vitola Strategies; one of them, Patrick Lockwood-Taylor, put her on speed dial when he landed as President of Bayer USA. The closer she worked as a consultant with Bayer brands and embraced the Bayer tagline (“Science for a Better Life”), she realized she had found a place where her personal and professional insights aligned. In July 2021 she became Bayer’s VP Brand Integration PR, Social and Influencer for Consumer Health and quickly applied her proprietary process emphasizing social and digital consumer outreach, building Bayer’s digital footprint from a tiptoe to a tidal wave. Within months she launched nearly 100 influencer campaigns and award-winning integrative marketing campaigns like Midol’s “No Apology Period”, Aleve’s “Worst Golf Swing in America” with Charles Barkley, and T-Pain’s remake of the classic Alka Seltzer jingle, resonating with consumers and elevating Bayer’s market reach by the millions. In 2021, she was named a PRNews “Top Woman in PR”.

For Denise, well-ing the world goes far beyond what happens in the office (or outside of it – she’s a big fan of remote work). Like the influential female mentors in her own life, she works with young women to nurture their professional selves and shape their futures. She is the Co-Lead of GROW (Growing Representation & Opportunities) at Bayer, an employee network group focused on equal representation, leadership, and recognition; and she actively works to recruit a diverse team of employees that can speak to the health needs of diverse audiences. Of course Denise continues to follow her own passions: working out, teaching spin and walking her dogs near her home in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. She loves the beach and the great outdoors, reading war and crime novels, and traveling the world with her husband of over 20 years.

Creative and confident. Playful and proactive. Bold, badass, and a leader in the business of making people and communities healthier and stronger…that’s Denise Vitola.

E197: Neil McKinley- Learning to settle into whatever is happening07 Mar 202300:36:46

In Neil's Own words:

"I have spent more than twenty-five years immersed in the practice of meditation. This span includes leading events of 100+ people both in-person and online. Through this time, I have also been a parent and partner, a teacher, author and competitive swim coach. In recent years, 'survivor' has been added to this list as I recover from a relationship with a dysfunctional spiritual mentor.
This last piece lends a compelling and affirming sense of story to my discussion of meditation. Talking about what I went through in that relationship, speaking to how I am recovering from this experience, and sharing how all of this is animating my work in remarkable new ways communicates much to listeners. First, that turning toward the difficult in our lives can reveal fresh perspectives and direction to us. Second, that meditation has much to offer our ‘turning toward’ process.

Put another way, all I’ve been through of late suggests that our lives - our lives as they are - hold an inner wisdom that has much to offer us as individuals and more. And meditation can play an important role in our deepening relationship with this wisdom, our deepening relationship with the path we are born to express. In many ways, these revelations now form the core of the story and work I’d like to share with you all"

E195: Mary Henderson - Wisdom is the new currency16 Feb 202300:36:41

Learn more about Mary at:

https://www.maryhendersoncoaching.com/

In Mary's own words:

The most prominent origin in my story that led me to do what I do now, began in 2011 when I had the greatest epiphany three hours after I gave birth to my son.
I knew in that moment that I would resign from my
company that I built from ground up in to a seven figure per annum business, give up the lifestyle I was living and start a journey within.

In January 2012, I resigned from my own company and embarked on a 12 month sabbatical to find out who I am.

I was fortunate to have two mentors to guide me on this inner journey. One of my mentors was a Professor in Philosophy from Oxford University, the other an expert in the emotional body.

During the twelve-month sabbatical, I came face to face with my TrueSelf realizing that I had gifts, talents, skills and traits that were unique to me. I fully accepted that I could do specific things with ease and grace and for the first time in my life I felt a deep sense of freedom.

I always had a unique approach to turning job titles into brands, I knew how to digitize business systems that were designed for the end user and I knew sales. When I merged these together, I could solve a complex problem in the world and that is when I transitioned into a coach and never looked back.

It took me three years to carefully craft my frameworks and design a system that delivers outcomes because my ultimate driver was to ensure that my clients got results in the shortest time possible.

Today, I get to call the problems I can solve with ease and grace my vocation and help Industry Experts turn their knowledge, wisdom and skills into a brand and a business so they become the go-to expert in their niche or industry.

https://www.multiplenatures.com/mntest-free

In 1989, while pursuing a career in music in New York, Steven Rudolph took up a part-time teaching job to make ends meet. In his first class he had an epiphany: that he had an innate capacity to teach. Though he had no formal training, it was as if he already knew how to do it—as if he were a fish in water.
The realization led him on a 21-year quest to India, where he uncovered 5,000-year-old secrets to self-understanding and achieving one's potential. Steven has taken those principles and crafted them into an easy-to-use, enjoyable program--Feed Your Tigers.

Steven lives in Cambodia where he serves as CEO of MNI, and explores how ancient Eastern wisdom can help people (and their tigers) become more aligned.

E186: David New- A Steadfast Advocate for people with disability29 Dec 202200:26:51

Twenty years ago, a rare disease rendered David New deaf, blind, and paralyzed from the waist down. Rejecting his doctors’ terminal diagnosis, defying all odds, David learned to walk again and gradually regained his hearing, though he did not regain his sight.

Multi-talented, he has since become a steadfast advocate for people with disabilities, creates glass sculptures, founded several companies and non-profits, and has embarked on an exciting venture, the South Beach Jazz Festival, www.sobejazzfestival.com.

David was born and raised in Philadelphia and began his university studies at the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University. He continued his education at the Tyler School of Art, Temple University, the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City and the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale. An artist at heart, David worked in his family’s furniture business while creating his own interior design firm, R. David New Interior Design. He relocated to South Florida in 2000 and continued pursuing his passion for art and design.

“As a visual artist my whole life, I was missing a component. I had to rethink everything. I got more involved in the community. I started new organizations and non-profits,” adds David.

David works tirelessly to break down barriers and to educate people about living and working with people with disabilities.  In addition to serving as president of Power Access Inc. and Ability Explosion®, he was chairman of the Miami Beach Disability Access Committee for six years until January 2016, where he is still instilled as a member. David was the founder of the Miami Beach Council of the Blind, an affiliate of the Florida Council and the American Council of the Blind.  In 2012, he took over Access Now Inc., which is an advocacy organization for enforcement of the Americans with Disabilities Act. With Access Now, David is working to build the first fully accessible art museum in the world located in Philadelphia Pennsylvania.

Through Power Access and Access Now, his two non-profit organizations, David provides programs and produces experiential events centered around building awareness of the challenges faced by people with disabilities, including Dining in the Dark, Disability Awareness Day and the South Beach Jazz Festival.

David recently reignited his lifelong passion for creating art when he learned about a new 3-D laser technology for creating laser-etched glass sculptures, a perfect medium for his visionary mind and imagination. He was introduced to the machinery, serendipitously located in Miami - the only one of its kind in the country. He designs the concept, the imagery, dimensions, and presentations, as well as the polished stainless-steel bases and glass specifications. David’s work has been exhibited in art galleries, at Art Basel Miami and he has plans to open a gallery on Miami Beach.

E181: Erik Alexander - Love is Love25 Nov 202200:39:54

Learn more about NOLA Papa and by "The Secret Mermaid Revue" at : https://nolapapa.com/

In Eriks Own Words:

My name is Erik Alexander and my husband and I are from New Orleans, Louisiana. We have two independently assertive daughters and an eager baby boy trying to keep up with his sisters.

We strongly feel that as an LGBTQ family, especially in the south, it's important for us and others like us to help light the way for the ones that need hope. We live in an incredibly divisive time and right now visibility is critical to help destigmatize and normalize same-sex families.

We love our children just as any other straight family does, if not more than some.
Just like them, we would do anything on Earth for our babies. We do that every single day, regardless if we are two dads.

It is my mission to broaden the one-sided view of the stereotypical American family. We too are living the American dream. We are the new normal, a loving family that teaches our children acceptance of all walks of life and the importance of being kind to one another.
Our place in this world is earned, not owed.

My hope is that through my blog, Nolapapa.com, I am able to bury my insecurities, my fears, and my failures- for all to read, in hopes to see my weaknesses sprout and transform into self-improvement, and resilience, and embrace an unapologetic renewal. My past helped make me who I am today- but who I am tomorrow depends on how I choose to get there, today.

In Scott's Own words:

"Most of us have been climbing the wrong mountain, and sometimes it seems like the harder we climb, the further we rise, the less we have.

On my journey through life, I’ve always felt the pull of two worlds. On one hand, the life of technical, for the operational. On the other, the life of a seeker, with the feeling of a deep connection to something bigger than myself.

These two worlds fueled a question how can we be successful at work and also be a good person? With my exploration of this question, I have strived to change work, (and the world) from the inside out.

E169: Lawren Askinosie - Doing Work that Matters01 Sep 202200:43:47

Lawren Askinosie grew up around craft chocolate, and with craft chocolate. Still in high school when her father transitioned from courtroom to chocolate-making and started one of the first small batch chocolate factories in America, she assisted him in almost every facet of their new life as chocolate makers—from working the storefront to developing marketing material. Eager to jump into the family business full-time Lawren began college early and upon graduation at 20, dove headfirst into learning the ins and outs of operating a bean-to-bar chocolate factory, building a brand, and marketing and selling craft chocolate.

Now the Chief Marketing Officer of the direct trade business that Forbes recently named “One of the 25 Best Small Companies In America,” Lawren is passionate about more than helping to shape the conversation around craft chocolate. She loves assisting Shawn to build sustainable relationships with smallholder cocoa farmers (especially female farmers), telling those stories, and finding innovative ways to connect the dots between the direct trade model, quality, and community. A passionate advocate for women, Lawren works to empower women through every aspect of the business from helping to seek out female-led farmer groups to facilitating girls empowerment initiatives in Askinosie’s cocoa origin communities. Lawren’s first book, which she co-authored with her father, called Meaningful Work: A Quest To Do Great Business, Find Your Calling And Feed Your Soul is available here.

Lawren is based in Austin, TX with her husband and three dogs (we lovingly call it "The Austin Annex"). Because technology, she's able to do her job remotely but also spends tons of time at the chocolate factory in Springfield. When she's not chocolate-ing or traveling, she's eating her way through Austin (with particular emphasis on tacos, BBQ and margaritas) and listening to live music.

Lawren serves on the board of Girls Empowerment Network, a Texas-based nonprofit that seeks to ignite the power in girls throughout the state by teaching them self-efficacy.

In Lynne's own words:

There is enormous power in resetting your relationship with food, taking control of your health, strength, mindset and mood. But why  take cooking or health advice from a snarky grandma who doesn’t own a restaurant, isn’t a reality TV star, doesn’t have a medical degree, and doesn’t particularly like to cook? Here's why: my new book, "Brownies for Breakfast, A Cookbook for Diabetics and the People Who Love Them," is a cool, fun, beautiful, guidebook for anybody who wants to eat healthy: vegan, vegetarian, pescatarian, gluten-free and sugar-free.  I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes more than thirty years ago, and offer myself as living proof that you can cook, eat, sleep and walk your way out of type 2 diabetes, along with other chronic ailments. That’s what I want for you, and the people who love you:“Brownies for Breakfast,” tells you exactly how to do it. I've got stories, I'm fun, at ease in front of a microphone and camera, and love doing podcasts. Let's talk!

E164: Lia Pinelli - Eating without Fear28 Jul 202200:36:48

Lia is one smart cookie. Despite holding degrees from both Stanford and UC Berkeley she was unable to crack the code on her struggle with overeating for decades. No matter how many books read, diets tried, or mindful eating methods subscribed to she could not resolve her struggle with food and weight. After becoming a life coach in 2016 she learned about weight loss coaching and was totally skeptical-- after all, if it worked she would have tried it already! She decided to give it a go anyway and was blown away by the results. Not only did she lose weight without using willpower or resistance, but she no longer experienced the over-hunger and cravings that had plagued her since childhood. Weight loss coaching provided the missing link!! It not only helped her figure out what to eat, but it addressed her mindset around food and weight. She learned to think differently which led her to eat differently and in a simple, sustainable way. That was 30 pounds ago. Today she lives happily with her family in California and maintains her natural weight without counting calories or carbs. She’s on a mission to teach other women how to ditch the diet drama and create the lives they crave, unapologetically.

Learn more about Lia at:      https://liapinellicoaching.com/eatingwithoutfear

E163: Reverend Kaji Douša - A Vessel for Faith and Change21 Jul 202200:30:42

Pastor Kaji Spellman Douša (pronounced “doe-sha”) is the first woman to serve as the Senior Pastor of her 212-year-old congregation, the Park Avenue Christian Church, in Manhattan. The Park is known as a congregation of fearless activism in New York City.

For the better part of 12 years, Pastor Kaji served as Chair of the New Sanctuary Coalition. Founded in 2007, the New Sanctuary Coalition (NSC) was a grassroots, immigrant-led, multi-faith-based organization that creates support systems for and empowers people navigating the immigration system. Pastor Kaji is known for her work in building networks of thousands of immigrant-led advocates across the country. For her ministry on the US border with Mexico, Pastor Kaji was targeted and surveilled by ICE and CBP, the subject of her lawsuit Douša v. DHS. She has emerged as a key voice in finding a way forward for migrants.

In the summer of 2020, Pastor Kaji helped to lead many of the rallies and marches organized in response to the murders of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd. In the midst of the uprisings, Pastor Kaji and a group of Black clergy women built a new, member-based organization called Daughters 4 Justice (D4J) to constructively work with and hold to account lawmakers and the NYPD in order to re-envision public safety in NYC. D4J’s basic premise is that a city structured around the safety of Black children will be safe for everyone.

Pastor Kaji is known for her particular ministry in service to the spiritual needs of Black excellence. Many national and world leaders – particularly Black women – call on her for prayer, support, care and discretion.

She is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and of Yale University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree cum laude and a Master of Divinity degree, respectively. Pastor Kaji completed her term as President of the Yale Divinity School Alumni Association in 2020. Her other nonprofit board roles include Planned Parenthood’s Clergy Advocacy Board, where she served on the 2020 U.S. Presidential endorsement committee for the Action Fund. Planned Parenthood regularly invites Pastor Kaji to speak at national rallies, events and press appearances on its behalf.

Pastor Kaji’s advocacy expertise helps to build the public and policy imaginary beyond intractable discourse. Her clear moral leadership brings her to a number of venues – from the pulpit to news broadcasts, editorial pages and policy rooms.
