404 VFR into IMC: Why GA Pilots Crash in Weather and How to Stay VFR + GA News15 Nov 202500:55:01

In this episode of Aviation News Talk, we begin with the developing details Weather accidents in general aviation often happen to pilots who genuinely believe they're cautious about flying in marginal conditions. But when you look closely at the chain of decisions that lead up to VFR-into-IMC crashes, a consistent pattern emerges—fatigue, long flights, pressure to complete a trip, weakening visibility, and the belief that "I can stay just under this." In Episode 404 of Aviation News Talk, Max Trescott unpacks a tragic example of this pattern and shows how NTSB data helps explain why GA pilots continue to stumble into weather accidents.

Max begins with a detailed look at a 2023 crash involving a Piper Archer, N21480, flown by a 66-year-old private pilot who was en route from Maine to Sun 'n Fun. The pilot had made this long trip multiple times before and was familiar with the route. He departed Maine, stopped twice for fuel, and ended the day by sleeping on a couch in a pilot lounge—after ordering Uber Eats at around 8 p.m. According to his wife, the pilot routinely camped at airports, carried sleeping gear and guitars, and prided himself on being cautious about weather.

The next morning, however, the signs of fatigue were visible. An airport employee who spoke with the pilot noted he looked tired and "could see the fatigue in his eyes." Despite checking weather and considering waiting out an approaching system, the pilot ultimately chose to depart. He told ATC he wanted to remain low—around 1,600 feet—to stay VFR under the cloud layer.

Unfortunately, this strategy is one of the most dangerous choices a VFR pilot can make. Staying low reduces options, shrinks reaction time, and increases the likelihood of inadvertently entering IMC. Eight minutes after informing ATC he wanted to stay low to maintain VFR, the pilot's track shows the airplane turning right and descending. When the controller asked if he was maneuvering to stay below the clouds, the pilot replied: "Mayday, mayday, in the clouds, I'm going down." Witnesses described the airplane descending nearly straight down.

The NTSB report revealed worsening weather, nearby convective activity, cloud bases around 1,300 feet AGL, and an overcast layer with tops near 3,500 feet. The pilot had passed an airport less than two miles before the crash—an airport he may have been trying to return to during his final 360-degree turn. But like many non-instrument-rated pilots who enter IMC unintentionally, he lost control within about a minute, consistent with studies showing that VFR pilots often lose control within three minutes of entering clouds.

Max then connects this accident to a broader NTSB study, Risk Factors Associated with Weather-Related General Aviation Accidents (SS-05/01). This landmark analysis compared 72 weather-related accidents with 135 non-accident flights occurring nearby at the same time. The goal was to uncover what differentiates pilots who get into trouble from those who do not.

The results were eye-opening. The most significant predictor was the age at which a pilot earned their first certificate, not their age at the time of the accident. Pilots who learned to fly at age 25 or younger had the lowest risk. Those who trained between 25 and 35 had a 4.5-times higher risk, between 35 and 45 had a 4.8-times higher risk, and pilots who started at 45 or older had a 3.4-times higher risk. The South Carolina pilot earned his certificate at around age 49.

Another major factor was lack of an instrument rating. Non-instrument-rated pilots had a 4.8-times greater likelihood of a weather accident. Long flights were also a major contributor: legs of 300 miles or more sharply increased risk. Pilots involved in accidents were less likely to have obtained thorough weather briefings and more likely to have had previous incidents or accidents.

One of the most striking findings concerned written and checkride performance. Accident pilots had cumulative pass rates averaging 84–86%, while non-accident pilots averaged around 95%. Some accident pilots had multiple failed checkrides, including one commuter pilot who had failed nine practical tests. The study concluded that stronger written and checkride performance was statistically linked to lower accident involvement.

From there, Max shifts to what pilots can do differently, starting with awareness. Humans are poor at detecting gradual reductions in visibility—the "frog in warm water" problem. Max describes an early flight to Massachusetts where visibility slowly degraded from 25 miles to around 10 miles, yet he didn't notice until the change became obvious. To counter this, he recommends periodically estimating visibility in flight using runway lengths, moving-map distances, landmarks, and horizon clarity.

Max also teaches a simple method for estimating cloud clearance using a 45-degree reference point on the cloud base. By timing how long it takes to reach the point beneath the cloud and using your groundspeed, you can determine if you're maintaining the required 500-foot clearance. The same geometry works for estimating horizontal cloud distance.

Finally, Max emphasizes fatigue and decision-making. After nearly 10 hours of flying the day before, poor sleep on a couch, and an early morning departure, the pilot in the accident was not at peak performance. Nutrition also matters—low glucose levels degrade decision-making. Max stresses the need to set clear weather trigger points before departure, brief passengers on them, and stick to the plan.

For any pilot who flies VFR, especially on long cross-country trips, this episode highlights why VFR-into-IMC accidents still happen—and how to stay VFR by using better judgment, better tools, and objective visibility cues.

403 UPS MD-11 Crash Analysis + Dr. Catherine Cavagnaro on How to Make Better Landings07 Nov 202501:04:32

In this episode of Aviation News Talk, we begin with the developing details surrounding the crash of UPS Airlines Flight 2976, a McDonnell Douglas MD-11F cargo aircraft that crashed shortly after takeoff from Louisville, Kentucky. The aircraft, tail number N259UP, was a 34-year-old MD-11F powered by three General Electric CF6-80 engines.

Bystander video shows the left engine separated from the wing, with the wing engulfed in flames as the aircraft lifted off. ADS-B data indicates the aircraft climbed less than 100 feet before beginning a descending, left-turning roll from which it did not recover. The crew had already passed V1, meaning they were committed to takeoff and did not have adequate runway remaining to stop. In situations like this, flight crews may have no survivable option, and this accident may represent one of those rare but tragic scenarios.

We also compare aspects of this event to American Airlines Flight 191, the 1979 DC-10 crash at Chicago O'Hare. While both accidents involved the loss of the left engine on takeoff, the failure chain in AA191 involved slat retraction due to damaged hydraulic and control lines—failure modes later addressed in the MD-11 design. The MD-11's slats are hydraulically locked to prevent unintended retraction, meaning the probable cause of this accident must differ in critical ways.

After the accident analysis, we shift to a practical, pilot-focused conversation about landings with returning guest Dr. Catherine Cavagnaro, columnist for AOPA and highly respected flight instructor and DPE. Drawing on more than a thousand check rides, Catherine explains that the most consistent problem she sees is pilots flying final approach too fast. While pilots often worry about being too slow, the data shows that excessive approach speed is far more common and contributes to long landing rolls, excessive float, bounced landings, and pilot-induced oscillations.

Catherine and Max discuss how a correct approach speed provides the right amount of energy to land smoothly and in control. More power and speed make it harder to manage the flare and to touch down where intended. Pilots also frequently fail to align the aircraft longitudinal axis with the runway before touchdown, particularly in crosswinds, due to hesitation in applying sufficient rudder and aileron. Catherine explains that as the aircraft slows, flight controls become less effective, so pilots should expect to use more control input in the final seconds before touchdown—not less.

The conversation also explores landing accuracy, noting that pilots should strive to touch down within 200–400 feet of a target point—not "somewhere down the runway." Even on long runways, building accuracy pays dividends when landing at shorter fields or during check rides.

A useful data tool Catherine recommends is FlySto (flysto.net), which allows pilots with modern avionics to upload flight data and analyze approach speed, pitch attitude, touchdown point, crab angle, rollout direction, and braking forces. By reviewing objective data, pilots can identify habits and improve their consistency over time.

Whether you're teaching new pilots, returning to flying after a break, or simply want your landings to be more stable and predictable, Catherine's techniques offer actionable steps: choose the correct approach speed, use proper crosswind controls, flare to a nose-high attitude, and maintain precision with touchdown point selection.

394 Pasadena PD Helicopter Crash Analysis and Cirrus SR22 Safety Lessons30 Jul 202501:02:01

Max talks about a dramatic ground collision between two Pasadena Police Department helicopters and the wide-ranging lessons pilots can draw from it. On November 17, 2012, two Bell OH-58 helicopters collided at the Pasadena PD Benedict Heliport when one returned from a flight and struck another that was sitting on the pad with its rotors turning. Six people suffered minor injuries, but the accident destroyed both aircraft and revealed systemic issues far beyond a single pilot error.

Max uses the NTSB report and audio clips from the Rotary Wing Show—where host Mick Cullen interviewed Dan Parsons—to examine how this accident unfolded and why different people interpret it so differently. Initial reactions, including Max's own when first hearing the episode, tended to blame the landing pilot. However, as Dan points out, there were organizational and procedural factors that made this an accident waiting to happen.

One major factor was the normalization of deviance. Due to poor drainage on Pad 1, it was common for helicopters to be parked slightly outside the designated landing box to avoid puddles. On the day of the accident, N96BM was positioned completely outside the pad's markings. When N911FA returned to land in light rain with a wet windscreen, the landing pilot assumed the parked helicopter was within its box and focused on positioning her own aircraft properly on Pad 2. The two rotor systems intersected just as she lowered the collective to land.

The lack of a monitored UNICOM frequency and formal radio procedures compounded the hazard. At the time of the accident, no standard protocol existed for announcing arrivals or departures beyond what ground personnel could hear. The parked helicopter's radios were not yet on, so the pilots had no communication link. Combined with rain-obscured visibility and non-standard pad markings, these conditions created a perfect storm.

Max highlights how this accident illustrates core principles of Safety Management Systems (SMS), even for pilots outside of airline or charter operations. SMS emphasizes proactively identifying hazards, implementing mitigations, and creating feedback mechanisms to prevent unsafe practices from becoming normalized. The Pasadena PD air unit responded after the accident by redesigning their heliport layout to increase pad separation, establishing monitored UNICOM procedures, and instituting regular safety meetings to address hazards before they could lead to incidents.

The episode also touches on pilot psychology. As Mick Cullen points out in one clip, the markings on the ground or guidance from a marshaller are just that—guidance. Ultimately, the pilot in command decides where to place the aircraft and is responsible for ensuring clearance. This is a valuable lesson not just for helicopter pilots but for fixed-wing pilots taxiing around crowded ramps. Max connects this to a story of a low-time pilot at his club who taxied into a fuel truck and insisted it wasn't his fault—a reminder that responsibility always lies with the PIC.

In the Updates segment, Max turns to two sobering Cirrus SR22 accidents. The first, in Jesup, Georgia, involved an experienced pilot attempting to land in near-zero visibility without flying the published instrument approach. Track data showed low-speed, high-bank maneuvers just before the airplane stalled and crashed short of the runway. The pilot's tendency to avoid being late for appointments may have contributed to self-induced pressure, leading to a poor decision to attempt a visual arrival in IMC.

The second accident, in Oxbow, Oregon, involved a newly certificated pilot who encountered forecast icing conditions at altitude. The airplane entered IMC, likely accumulated ice, and descended rapidly. The pilot deployed the Cirrus Airframe Parachute System, but at a speed far above the published deployment limit, causing structural failure of the parachute system. The accident underscores the critical importance of understanding aircraft limitations, respecting icing forecasts, and recognizing that CAPS is not a magic shield if operated outside design parameters.

Max ties both Cirrus accidents back to the SMS theme. In each case, small decisions compounded into catastrophic outcomes. An absence of previous incidents can create a false sense of security, but SMS teaches that safety is not the absence of accidents—it's the presence of robust defenses and hazard awareness. For general aviation pilots, this means constantly evaluating risks, questioning assumptions, and not allowing convenience or routine to override sound decision-making.

The Pasadena PD helicopter accident provides a vivid case study in how seemingly minor deviations, inadequate procedures, and environmental factors can align to produce a serious accident even among highly experienced pilots. With over 16,000 and 13,000 hours respectively, neither pilot fit the stereotype of "low-time error." Instead, it was the system around them—and the normalization of small deviations—that created the conditions for disaster.

Max concludes with a reminder that SMS isn't a bureaucratic requirement; it's a mindset. Whether you fly a Cirrus SR22, a Robinson R44, or a law enforcement helicopter, applying SMS principles—identifying hazards, creating mitigations, and fostering open communication—can make the difference between routine operations and a preventable accident. Max talks about when to choose an IAF versus Vectors when Getting Vectors to Final. Like most things in aviation, the answer is "It Depends." In older GPSs, choosing Vectors drops some waypoints, which is fine over flat terrain, but which can be dangerous when vectored over mountainous terrain. This is why CFIs often encouraged pilots to always load an approach with an IAF and not vectors, even when being vectored for an approach. Newer GPSs have solved this problem, and in most cases, it's fine to load an approach with vectors.

302 San Diego Cessna P210 Crash – Poorly flown ILS and low fuel17 Nov 202300:30:28

Max talks about the crash this week of a Cessna P210 in San Diego, and why it crashed. The flight originated in Concord, CA and flew for just over 4 hours to Montgomery Field in San Diego. The aircraft first tried to land at French Valley airport, was high on the approach and went missed. It diverted to Montgomery field to fly the ILS 28R, however the pilot flew about a third of a mile south of the airport, missing the runway. Max talks about why the pilot of a Cessna 340 in San Diego turned right instead of joining the localizer and later crashed. It all came down to the pilot's lack of understanding of how to fly a circling approach, and his inability to communicate that he'd like to switch to a visual approach. The pilot's logbook revealed that Instrument Proficiency Checks and Flight Review conducted during the prior year were cursory and did not meet the requirements for issuing those endorsements. 393 Bonanza Ruddervator Crisis Solved: $500K Prize Spurs Certified Replacement24 Jul 202501:02:43

Max talks with Tom Turner, Executive Director of the American Bonanza Society's Air Safety Foundation, about an extraordinary initiative to preserve the operational future of the iconic V-tail Bonanza aircraft. When Textron Aviation quietly stopped producing the magnesium ruddervator skins—a unique flight control surface used only on V-tail Bonanzas—it left over 5,000 aircraft potentially grounded due to a lack of repair parts. Even minor damage could make these aircraft unrepairable.

To solve this crisis, the ABS Air Safety Foundation awarded the $500,000 Maciel Ruddervator Prize to SRS Aviation of Minnesota. Tom explains the history and challenges behind the ruddervator issue: the original parts were made from a now-obsolete thickness of magnesium, which is no longer commonly produced. Even worse, the chemical process used to harden the magnesium is so caustic and environmentally hazardous that almost no facility could perform it anymore.

SRS Aviation, already experienced in building replacement aluminum control surfaces, initially declined to compete. But after realizing no one else was pursuing a solution, they took on the challenge, developing their own safe and FAA-acceptable hardening process. They eventually met the prize's requirements, which included certifying replacement skins for all three ruddervator design variants and producing at least 100 completed kits to prove production viability.

Tom also discusses the origin of the prize money: a generous bequest from Manny Maciel, a quiet aircraft fueler in Santa Rosa, California, who left $5 million to aviation safety research. The ABS Air Safety Foundation received $1 million of this funding, which it used to underwrite the prize. Tom emphasizes that the Foundation structured the award not just to incentivize a solution, but to ensure long-term support for V-tail Bonanza owners.

The story also touches on how the ruddervator issue impacted aircraft valuations and even insurance policies—some insurers were unwilling to total aircraft with ruddervator damage, knowing repairs were impossible. Tom notes that after the prize was announced, Textron resumed limited production of the original ruddervator skins, showing how serious ABS was about finding a solution.

Max wraps up by asking what other challenges might face Bonanza owners. Tom replies that while issues will always arise, most are solvable. The ruddervator shortage, however, was unique—it was an existential threat. Thanks to SRS Aviation and the support of the aviation community, that threat has now been eliminated.

288 Mastering Non-Towered Airport Operations and Straight-in Approaches with Catherine Cavagnaro24 Aug 202300:44:07

Max talks with Catherine Cavagnaro about the new FAA Advisory Circular AC 90-66C on non-towered operations and straight-in approaches. The new Advisory Circular is significantly longer than the previous version, and it places much more emphasis on straight-in approaches. It says "the FAA does not recommend that the pilot execute a straight-in approach for landing, when there are other aircraft in the traffic pattern." Pilots choosing to execute a straight-in approach do not have a particular priority over other aircraft in the traffic pattern.

Pilots "should not use paint schemes or color descriptions to replace the use of the aircraft call sign." Also, "Pilots are reminded that the use of the phrase "ANY TRAFFIC IN THE AREA, PLEASE ADVISE" is not a recognized self-announce position and/or intention phrase and should not be used under any condition."

287 Truckee Jet Crash: Unstabilized Circling Approach and Poor CRM + GA News17 Aug 202300:55:02

Max talks about the July 2021 crash of a Challenger Jet that was doing a circling approach at the Truckee, CA airport. The NTSB just released its final report on that accident, And there's a lot that GA pilots can learn from this accident.

The NTSB faulted the first officer's improper decision to attempt to salvage an unstabilized approach by executing a steep left turn to realign the airplane with the runway centerline, and the captain's failure to intervene after recognizing the FO's erroneous action. Both pilots both ignored stall protection system warnings, which resulted in a left-wing stall and an impact with terrain. The NTSB also cited the flight crew's self-induced pressure to perform and poor crew resource management, which degraded their decision-making.

The flight was the first pairing of this crew with the operator. The captain, who had signed an employment contract with the operator, but was not yet an employee at the time of the accident. The first officer was not the accident operator's employee at the time of the accident and had been hired as a contract pilot for the accident flight.

The pilots calculated that runway 20 was too short for the landing distance required by the airplane at its expected landing weight. Instead of making a request to ATC for the straight-in approach to runway 11 (the longer runway), the captain told the FO they could take the runway 20 approach and circle to land on runway 11. There is a straight-in RNAV (GPS) approach to runway 11, but the pilots didn't request it.

286 Flying Relief to Maui's Wildfire Victims – interview Laurence Balter15 Aug 202300:33:19

Max talks with Laurence Balter about how the general aviation community in Hawaii is flying relief supplies to help victims of Maui's wildfires. The town of Lahaina is served by just a single road, which has closed frequently since the wildfires began a week ago. Electricity and cell phone outages have also hampered relief efforts.

Soon after the fires, local Maui pilots began organizing to fly supplies into Kapalua Airport, near Lahaina, but which is closed to most general aviation flights. The pilots received permission to fly into Kapalua, and began flying relief supplies to the airport.

Balter and Maui Brewing founder Garrett Marrero organized the effort via text messages and social media, and flights began on August 11. The pilot group worked with the airport fire departments at Maui's main Kahului Airport. Firefighters and volunteers weighed and loaded supplies that were delivered to the fire station. The process worked in reverse at theKapalua airport, where local fire fighters unloaded planes and helicopters and arranged for the distribution of supplies to local victims in Lahaina.

Laurence is flying his relief flights using the Cirrus SR22 that he usually uses for dual-led flying experiences, for pilots vacationing on Maui who are interested in flying a Cirrus and getting exposed to flying in Hawaii. He's also set up a Go Fund me page for people interested in donating to pay for avgas that volunteer pilots have had to pay for to fly the wildfire relief missions.

285 How to Choose a Flight Instructor and When to Fire a CFI + GA News10 Aug 202301:05:54

Choosing a flight instructor is one of the most important decisions you'll make as you work to become a pilot, and later as you work on additional certificates and ratings. And that's because having the right CFI can be one of the biggest factors in your success. Not that you can't succeed with an awful flight instructor, but it's so much easier if you're with the right flight instructor.

Most likely, you'll get to choose a new flight instructor multiple times, either because your first flight instructor has moved on, or you've moved to a new location, or you're working on advanced training in some aircraft in which your previous flight instructor doesn't specialize. And the flip side of all of this is firing a flight instructor, which we'll talk about later.

Since choosing the right flight instructor is so important, you'll want to give this a lot of thought and not just sign up with the first flight instructor you come across, or your friend, or your employee who's been itching to get you to fly with them.

Unfortunately, in some cases, you won't get to choose your flight instructor. If you learn to fly in the military or in a Part 141 school, you probably won't have a choice of flight instructors. Though you will probably end up flying with multiple instructors. And that's a good thing. As every CFI tends to put more emphasis on some things and less emphasis on others. And by flying with multiple instructors, you'll pick up on nuances that your primary instructor never mentioned, or didn't put much emphasis on.

Ultimately, when you're working on a pilot certificate, or a new rating or certificate, or transitioning into a new aircraft, you're working to assimilate a body of knowledge to help you become the best possible pilot. Your goal is not just to pass a checkride. Your goal is mastery of the aircraft. And to do that you'll pull from many resources. You'll try to be a sponge and learn as much as you can from books, online courses, and videos. And you'll try to learn something from each of the flight instructors you fly with.

Choosing a flight instructor is not a precise science; there's no textbook-like process or formula for choosing that person. Ultimately, it's a subjective process, and that's appropriate, because there's no one flight instructor who's perfect for everyone. A flight instructor who was ideal for a pilot friend of yours… may not be the right one for you for a variety of reasons.

Max talks with Cole Crawford from ForeFlight about the company's latest innovation: Dynamic Procedures. Built to replace the static, legacy approach chart paradigm, Dynamic Procedures enables pilots to access IFR approach information dynamically, contextually, and interactively—right from the ForeFlight map screen.

Cole explains that most pilots spend their time in ForeFlight's moving map, but approach procedures often pulled them out of that environment into static "plates." Dynamic Procedures changes that by embedding approach information into the map itself, using a smart sidebar that adjusts to what's relevant—no more scanning through unnecessary minimums or ambiguous notes.

Max and Cole walk through an ILS approach into Austin, Texas, highlighting features like:

  • A dynamic sidebar showing stepdowns, minimums, and missed instructions
  • Color-coded segments that reflect which part of the procedure is active
  • Integrated 3D lighting views showing actual approach light systems
  • Compatibility with both FAA and Jeppesen charts
  • One-tap toggling between chart and chartless views

Cole also introduces the revamped "Approach Mode" in Profile View. It declutters the horizontal profile to focus solely on the approach, making threshold crossing height, descent angles, and fix altitudes easier to interpret. The profile also includes range tick marks so pilots can visualize their distance from the runway—helpful when sequencing into an uncontrolled field or estimating when to descend.

The conversation explores how this feature enhances safety—particularly by minimizing the chance of referencing incorrect minimums or missing key notes during busy phases of flight. Cole shares how the sidebar automatically selects the applicable minimum for the aircraft category, based on user input. And the system can handle complex logic, such as adjusting minimums for altimeter source changes—automatically, without the pilot having to do the math.

They demonstrate several unique procedures, including RNAV approaches with course reversals and circling minimums. In circling scenarios, the system visually depicts the circling area boundary on the map, helping pilots better visualize protected airspace—especially when flying at non-standard pattern altitudes.

The discussion wraps up with insights into how ForeFlight builds this feature using raw procedural data from global ANSPs (Air Navigation Service Providers). Instead of pre-composed charts, Dynamic Procedures generates visuals on-the-fly using Jeppesen data, allowing more flexibility, better legibility, and real-time filtering. The app dynamically renders labels, declutters unnecessary data, and tailors the view to your position and approach segment.

Cole offers practical advice for pilots transitioning to this new paradigm. He encourages users not to discard traditional charts immediately, but to use Dynamic Procedures alongside plates at first, eventually growing comfortable with the new tool as a primary briefing method—similar to how many pilots gradually adopted ForeFlight's aeronautical map over VFR sectionals and low-altitude charts.

The feature will roll out with a preview to all ForeFlight subscribers in supported regions (U.S., Canada, Pacific Islands), after which it will be available to Essential-tier and above subscribers. Extensive documentation, webinars, and in-app support will help pilots get up to speed.

284 The final NTSB report is out for Transair flight 810, which crashed at night in the ocean shortly after takeoff from Hawaii. The pilots thought that they had a rare double engine failure. In fact, they had just a single engine failure, but they left both throttles at idle, dooming the plane. The probable cause said "contributing to the accident were the flight crew's ineffective crew resource management, high workload, and stress." Max talks about the huge distraction that consumed both pilots for a half hour, just moments before they took off.

Max Trescott teams up with Tom Turner—executive director of the American Bonanza Society's Air Safety Foundation—to help listener Marc Brodecki weigh options for earning his private pilot certificate. Marc, a 39-year-old aerospace engineer in Los Angeles with glider experience, is evaluating three flight training options: a nearby tailwheel-focused school (that includes a Stearman), a larger flight school at Torrance using Sling aircraft, or buying and learning in the Beechcraft Bonanza he eventually wants to own.

Tom provides extensive guidance on Bonanza ownership. He discusses which Bonanza models (S-35 or early V-35) fit Marc's $100–$150k budget and breaks down the real-world operating costs—including fuel, maintenance, insurance, tie-downs, and the potential for large, deferred maintenance costs. He stresses that insurance for student pilots in complex aircraft like Bonanzas can be a barrier and suggests checking with brokers early. Max adds that avionics upgrades are costly and advises finding an aircraft that already has the equipment you need.

Tom and Max both support training in a Bonanza—if done right. Benefits include gaining type-specific proficiency, leading to greater safety and a stronger insurance profile. However, they caution that older Bonanzas may lack dual controls and copilot brakes, which are required for instruction and checkrides. Installing these features can be expensive and difficult, making them a potential dealbreaker. Max recommends looking for experienced Bonanza instructors, such as those certified through ABS's Flight Instructor Academy.

Marc also asks about learning in tailwheel aircraft and transitioning later to a Bonanza. Tom says that's a viable and fun route—especially if the nearby school makes frequent training easy. Both guests emphasize that the convenience of the training location often matters more than the training aircraft. Flying regularly helps students retain skills and progress faster.

The discussion also touches on partnerships to reduce ownership costs, the hidden expenses of ownership (like California's use tax), and how to vet good instructors. Max compares the CFI relationship to psychotherapy—it must be built on trust. A red flag is any instructor who pretends to know everything rather than admitting when they need to look something up.

As for timing, both Tom and Max encourage Marc to begin instrument training soon after earning his private certificate. In cloud-prone California, that rating increases safety and utility, and the sooner it's earned, the easier the transition.

To wrap up, Max reminds Marc not to get stuck in "analysis paralysis." While his engineering mindset may drive him to seek the perfect solution, the key is choosing a path that's good enough and lets him start flying soon—and enjoy the journey.

Even if you aren't planning to take a checkride, you'll learn lots of tips from Seth about how to use the Documents tab of ForeFlight to organize information that you may want to have at your fingertips when you fly. He recommends you create a Binder for your checkride and then add documents to that binder. For example, for an instrument checkride, you may want to include some of the FAA Handbooks, including the Instrument Procedures Handbook and the Instrument Flying Handbook. Other things you might want to include are: Part 61, Part 91, Part 135, ACS Instrument Rating Airplane, Aeronautical Information Manual, Digital Terminal Procedures Supplemental and FAA International Flight Plan. He also mentions a glitch with the Bookmarks function, which is keyed to a particular page in a document, rather than a particular topic. This can become an issue as documents get updated with new pages, and the topics shift to different pages.

268 Max talks with Tom Turner about how to troubleshoot a partial or total engine failure in flight. Every engine is going to be a little different, but there are generic steps for troubleshooting any partial or complete engine failure. All piston engines need fuel, air, and a source of ignition, so you need to check each of these items. For fuel, switch tanks, turn on any auxiliary fuel pumps, and adjust the mixture. If you have carb heat and a manual alternate air system, try applying these. For ignition, try different positions on the mag switch to see if that helps. The mixture on turbocharged engines is handled differently. In all cases, you should refer to the engine failure in flight checklist for your aircraft.

267 Max plays audio from ATC and the NTSB press conference and discusses what preceded the fatal breakup of a medevac Pilatus PC-12 in Nevada. The aircraft departed Reno, International Airport on February 24, 2023 at about 9 PM. It was snowing lightly at the time, and moderate turbulence and icing were reported in the area. It was a medevac flight with a pilot and four passengers, including a patient. Approximately 15 minutes after departure, the aircraft turned off the instrument departure procedure it was flying, turning about 90 degrees to the right. It appears the autopilot was disconnected about the time of the turn and that the pilot hand flew the airplane to get it back on the original course. About a minute later, it began a steep spiraling turn to the right with a high descent rate. Max discusses possible reasons the autopilot may have become disconnected.

390 Electric Airplane Test Flight: Max Trescott Reviews the Bristell B23 Energic27 Jun 202501:09:43

Max Trescott takes listeners inside the cockpit of the future in episode 390, as he shares his firsthand experience flying the fully electric Bristell B23 Energic trainer and talks with executives from H55, the Swiss company behind its electric propulsion system. This in-depth episode explores the technical, operational, and strategic aspects of electric flight training aircraft.

The B23 Energic is a joint project between Czech aircraft manufacturer BRM Aero and H55, the latter founded by the team behind the Solar Impulse aircraft that flew around the world on solar power. Max discusses how H55 is focusing on producing electric propulsion systems—batteries, controllers, and motors—for aircraft manufacturers, rather than building entire aircraft themselves. This modular approach is designed to speed up certification and lower development costs.

H55 CEO Martin Larose shares how the company is involved in several projects worldwide, including with CAE to retrofit Piper Archers, Harbour Air to electrify floatplanes, and Pratt & Whitney on a hybrid Dash 8-400. He also explains H55's plan to manufacture battery systems in both Switzerland and Montreal to serve global markets while avoiding costly and complex battery transport logistics.

Max's test flight takes place at Palo Alto Airport, where the B23 Energic was on a U.S. tour. He notes the aircraft's similarities to the Piper Sport Cruiser in handling and design, due to a shared designer. The electric version offers about 60 minutes of flight time and a 10-minute reserve, although U.S. FAA rules would require a 30-minute reserve, limiting U.S. endurance to 40 minutes unless additional batteries are added.

The aircraft uses NCA lithium-ion batteries and features a liquid-cooled motor and controller, but air-cooled batteries to keep things simple. While the plane's payload is about 73 pounds less than its piston counterpart, it offers dramatically lower operating costs—estimated at $8–9 per hour for electricity versus $50+ per hour in fuel and oil for conventional trainers.

The certification process, especially in Europe under EASA, remains H55's biggest challenge, with 90% of company resources dedicated to achieving approval. The motor is built by Equipmake in the UK to H55's design and features dual windings for redundancy—ensuring safe single-failure tolerance.

Max also interviews Laurent, the demo pilot, and Céline, a project engineer, learning about how H55 built hundreds of hours of bench testing before the aircraft even flew. Their insights underscore the care and rigorous engineering that go into preparing electric aircraft for real-world flight training environments.

In-flight, Max describes the aircraft as well-balanced and intuitive, with a quiet cabin that enhances concentration—an important advantage for student pilots. He praises the center stick control, wide cabin, and visibility. The landing was smooth and predictable, and energy use during the short flight was minimal—about 6 kWh for a pattern and 360 turn.

Finally, Max reflects on how quickly the electric nature of the aircraft faded into the background during flight—exactly what H55 wants. The B23 Energic is expected to launch in Europe in 2026 and U.S. in 2027, with a price of $431,000 for early buyers and $500,000 later. It will be certified for Day VFR only, making it a strong candidate for cost-effective flight training.

262 Max talks with Tom Turner about an ATSB study showing that partial power loss is 3X more likely than complete engine failure. It also shows that that serious injury or death occurred more frequently in partial power loss versus complete engine failures. With full power or no power, pilots know what to do. But the uncertainty of partial power loss makes it harder for pilots to decide what to do.
