| Insulin Resistance | 06 Jan 2021 | 00:38:18 | |
Host Dr. Jill Waggoner and Co-Host Jillian Jones Mitchell discuss what Insulin Resistance is, the contributing factors to its development, and how it progresses to become diabetes. An eye opening discussion for anyone who would like to make the changes necessary for Diabetes prevention. Insulin resistance occurs when excess glucose in the blood reduces the ability of the cells to absorb and use blood sugar for energy. This increases the risk of developing prediabetes, and eventually type 2 diabetes. If the pancreas can make enough insulin to overcome the low rate of absorption, diabetes is less likely to develop, and blood glucose will stay within a healthy range. | Understanding How COVID-19 Vaccines Work | 30 Dec 2020 | 00:27:23 | |
Since the emergency approval and of the Coronavirus Vaccines, there has been a barrage of information everywhere. In this episode, Dr. Waggoner discusses how these vaccines work and how they protect us from getting ill with COVID-19. She discusses the ways COVID-19 vaccines help our bodies develop immunity to the virus that causes COVID-19 without us having to get the illness. There is a discussion of how the different types of vaccines work in different ways to offer protection, but with all types of vaccines, the body is left with a supply of “memory” T-lymphocytes as well as B-lymphocytes that will remember how to fight that virus in the future. Dr. Jill explains that It typically takes a few weeks for the body to produce T-lymphocytes and B-lymphocytes after vaccination. Therefore, it is possible that a person could be infected with the virus that causes COVID-19 just before or just after vaccination and then get sick because the vaccine did not have enough time to provide protection. It is also important to know that sometimes after vaccination, the process of building immunity can cause symptoms, such as fever. These symptoms are normal and are a sign that the body is building immunity.

| Phases of Vaccine Development | 30 Dec 2020 | 00:17:48 | |
In this episode, Dr. Jill Waggoner discusses the various phases of vaccine development. Information to help explain the methods via which vaccines are developed and tested before being released to the public. This brief discussion gives the listener the information they need to understand how vaccines come into being. Before vaccines are licensed by the FDA, they are tested extensively in the laboratory and with human volunteers to ensure their safety. First, researchers use computers to predict how the vaccine will interact with the human immune system. Then the vaccines are tested on animals including mice, guinea pigs, rabbits, and monkeys. Finally, the vaccines go into human trials. Vaccine development and approval follows the same general steps that are used to test drugs and other biological agents. A sponsor who wishes to begin clinical trials with a vaccine must submit an Investigational New Drug application (IND) to FDA. The IND describes the vaccine, its method of manufacturing, and quality control tests for release. Also included are information about the vaccine’s safety and ability to elicit a protective immune response (immunogenicity) in animal testing, as well as a proposed plan for testing the drug on humans.
