Episode 61: Dr. Tom Collins
vendredi 1 décembre 2023 • Duration 01:06:35
We're excited to announce that Episode 61 of All Things Whiskey Podcast is live now!
On this episode Hosts Mike Outcalt and Devin Mitchell welcome Dr. Tom Collins - Jackson Family Wines Endowed Professor of Viticulture and Enology at Washington State University to talk about his research; the impact barrels have on wines and spirits, and how certain levels of dilution in spirits can make them smell and taste the same. Dr. Collins is an expert in distillation practices which he has been studying in his chemistry lab since 2015 to determine how the char and toast levels inside barrels filter harsher components of whiskey and other spirits while aiming to understand the chemistry behind this process. More recently Dr. Collins has studied a close link between the aroma and taste of whiskies to determine how a certain level of dilution can make whiskies smell the same and further dilution can make whiskies taste the same. Additionally we discuss the demand for new barrels, used barrels, barrel alternatives, and sustainability initiatives around barrels in the spirits industry. We then open up the conversation to talk about Dr. Collins' favorite whiskies, brands, spirits, and discuss the future of his research.
Don't miss this episode - it is a great opportunity to learn about barrel, taste, and aroma science behind the spirits that we know and love.
Thanks again to our guest Dr. Collins! Cheers and enjoy!

Episode 58: Jack Daniel's Lineup
jeudi 24 août 2023 • Duration 01:05:30
Welcome back to All Things Whiskey Podcast! On tonight's episode Hosts Mike Outcalt and Devin Mitchell sit down to sample the number 1 selling whiskey in the world - Jack Daniel's! After Devin was bamboozled blind tasting 80 proof Jack Daniel's on the last episode we figured it was time to dive into some PREMIUM Jack Daniel's expressions including the Jack Daniel's 10 year, 12 year, Twice Barreled American Single Malt Special Release, 5280 Whiskey Society Single Barrel Barrel Proof, and the Single Barrel Barrel Proof Rye (136.3 proof).
First the hosts go over some of Jack Daniel's history - like did you know that his real name was Jasper Newton and that he died of a blood infection after kicking his safe? Jack Daniel's has an incredibly rich history and I highly encourage everyone to checkout their website and timeline https://www.jackdaniels.com/en-us/our-story.
Then the hosts dive deep into a gamut of 5 premium offerings from Jack Daniel's - whew what a lineup! If you don't know how good some of these whiskies are, then you don't know Jack!
Don't forget we're also giving away a sample set of Jack Daniel's 10, 12, and the Barrel Proof Rye to one lucky Patron. Be sure to check out the Patreon program at www.patreon.com/allthingswhiskeypodcast if you're interested in supporting the shows.

Episode 57: Blinded By The Mike
jeudi 27 juillet 2023 • Duration 01:09:02
Welcome back to All Things Whiskey Podcast! On this episode Hosts Devin Mitchell and Mike Outcalt fire up the mics for a blind tasting special. Before the blind, the hosts review the "Freezer Door" Old Fashioned. To make one, grab your favorite bottle of whiskey, take 3 ounces out, then put in 2 ounces of simple syrup, 24 dashes of bitters and toss it in the freezer. Boom - now you can shake and pour Old Fashioneds anytime and for all your friends. For the main event Devin gets "Blinded by the Mike" (sung to the tune of Manfred Mann's Blinded by the Light) to prove a point about how we classify certain types or whiskey.
Don't forget we've overhauled our Patreon program to feature weekly updates and patron only giveaways! For this episode we will toss our patrons into a randomizer to win a bottle of Heaven Hill 7 Year. Check it out at www.patreon.com/allthingswhiskeypodcast.
