Interview: HANNAH ROSE MAY,
Exorcism at 1600 Penn, out Oct 16. Art by Vanesa R. Del Rey
- Hannah Rose May, thank you for joining us on the AIPT comics podcast! To start, we’ve read the ashcan for Exorcism at 1600 Penn, and it’s primed for the election this year. How long have you been working on this project and was it always intended to launch near election time?
- The Ashcan reveals a complex family in the white house, with Kelly Doyle taking on the presidency with her family joining her, was it always intended to be an ensemble story?
- Vanesa Del Rey blew me away with Redlands, what made her the right fit for this project?
- For fans of Rogues Gallery, what does Exorcism at 1600 Penn offer them?
- I really love the title! Were there other options before getting nixed?
- What kind of research did you do into politics?
- When you write dialogue, do you find yourself speaking aloud to get a feel for each character?
- This story feels like someone getting out some existential fears. Did you find writing this to be therapeutic at all?
- Jock’s variant cover for this is so haunting. What kind of prompt or resources does a variant cover artist get before diving in?
- Declan Shalvey co-wrote the story with you on Rogues Gallery, which got me thinking, now he’s super steeped into the Alien universe, soon the Terminator universe, any desire to jump in with him for a licensed book like that?
- If Exorcism at 1600 Penn was a song, what would it be and why?
- Down with the Sickness - Disturbed
- What comics are you reading now?

Gerry Duggan talks comics, photography, and reveals the full spectrum of his human experience
Episode 191
dimanche 2 octobre 2022 • Duration 37:12
This week, Gerry Duggan joins the AIPT Comics podcast to discuss his new Kickstarter Timing/Luck! We dig into his passion for photography, the inspirations of the book, and how it differs from writing. You can back Timing/Luck here (just 11 days left to back it!).
We also discuss his highly anticipated series The Invincible Iron Man, and what to expect from his upcoming comedy one-shot Halloween Party with Brian Posehn and Scott Koblish. We also run through the Colbert Questionnaire (revealing the full spectrum of his human experience)!
Here's a rundown of the questions Gerry answers:
- As of the air time of this interview, Timing/Luck has 11 days left to back on Kickstarter, featuring scenes in Hollywood, from behind the scenes in comics, and street photography, how many years of work does this book span?
- Is there different itch photography scratches for you outside of writing comics?
- There’s something solitary about writing, and maybe even as a photographer as you’re behind the lens so to speak, what motivates you to put yourself out there in your photography and your comics writing?
- You also got Halloween Party coming out October 12, 2022, with Brian Posehn and Scott Koblish, why must Scotch McTiernan’s story continue in this adventure after your 4:20 special?!
- I’d be remiss not to ask about you kicking off Invincible Iron Man with Juan Frigeri in December, how long has this project been in the works?
- Are there any story arcs fans should pick up to prepare for your run?
- When writing comedy, big team books like X-Men, or solo heroes like Iron Man, do you have any methods to getting into the right mindset, be it a mood board of imager, or music?
[caption id="attachment_451509" align="aligncenter" width="680"]
The cover to Timing/Luck.[/caption]
- It’s tantalizing to know Timing/Luck peers behind the curtain showing comics creators, actors, and regular people behind the curtain, so to speak, so I was wondering if we could run through the Colbert Quesionairre so that you can be known, to the listeners, would that be okay?
- Best sandwich?
- What's one thing you own that you really should throw out?
- Apples or oranges?
- What is the scariest animal
- Have you ever asked someone for their autograph?
- What do you think happens when we die?
- Favorite action movie?
- Favorite smell?
- Least favorite smell?
- Exercise: worth it?
- Flat or sparkling?
- Most used app on your phone?
- You get one song to listen to for the rest of your life: what is it?

- Old Dog deals with espionage, but there’s a sci-fi layer to this book as well. For a general audience, will a James Bond fan enjoy Old Dog, or maybe even a Terminator fan?
- Given you’re writing, drawing, and coloring, have you ever found yourself mad at YOURSELF, say for a choice that required more work coloring, penciling, etc?
- You’re a one man army on this book, minus Clayton Cowles’ exceptional lettering! How’s that collaboration going, and what led to the decision to delegate that?
- I’ve seen you mention Heather Antos’ involvement with Old Dog, what is it like working with Heather on this project and in general?
- I’m tiptoeing around spoilers here, but Jack has a new partner at the close of the issue. How will their relationship change the tone of the story going forward?
- In the perfect world, how many issues is in the Old Dog omnibus?
- Declan you’re a busy guy, do you have other projects you’d like to talk about today?

Interview with writer Ed Brisson
- Thanks for being on the AIPT Comics podcast, to start, you’ve been very busy with Deathstroke, and Predator, and There’s something wrong with Patrick Todd! How long has this wealth of different kinds of stories been in the works?
- How has the fan response been for Predator? How great is it to get this out after the delay?
- The Predator’s cinematic adventures have so far taken place in the present and the past. Was it always the plan to take your series to the future?
- One of the fun things about the Predators is that we still know so little about them. Was that ambiguity something you loved playing with from your main character’s POV?
- Batman Inc. drops Ghost-Maker into a detective story! How does Ghost-Maker approach a mystery differently from Batman?
- With Deathstroke Inc. was there any trepidation in going with the “Year One” moniker?
- Was there a challenge in pulling back some of Slade’s ability and giving us a greener Deathstroke?
- I’ve enjoyed the pacing of There’s Something Wrong with Patrick todd, especially that opening page to issue one. What went into crafting this superhero tale that feels inverted, as if the powers are not at the surface of the story?
- I gotta ask, was this always the title for this book? Whenever I see a long title I think “The SEO!”
- When working with so many different artists with different skills, do you find the writing process different?
- You’re writing so many characters now, and have written so many characters like fan-favorite Glob, at this moment in time do you have a favorite?
- Ed you’re a busy guy, do you have other projects you’d like to talk about today?
