Attending a recent high school choir event with my daughter, I noticed a shift—more students than ever are choosing to take a gap year before heading to college. While college often seems like the default next step, it’s not always the right choice for everyone immediately. The pressure to jump straight into higher education can be overwhelming, and for some students, taking time to explore their options, build life skills, and gain work experience can be incredibly beneficial. A gap year can provide time for personal growth, financial savings, and career exploration. Yet, the stigma around it persists. Many students feel uneasy telling peers they’re taking a year off, fearing they’ll be seen as directionless. However, when approached with intention and structure, gap year planning can be simplified and one of the most valuable experiences of a young adult’s life. If you or your child is considering a gap year, it’s important to plan it properly. Here’s how to simplify it and make the most of it. Navigating the world of college disability accommodations can feel overwhelming for both students and their parents. | Ep 110 Supporting a Teen Newly Diagnosed with Dyslexia | 29 janv. 2025 | 00:21:39
Recently, I had a brief but exciting discussion with a parent on Instagram who asked for some help for her 14 year old son. He was recently diagnosed with dyslexia. Now here’s the thing, he’s in private school. Now, private schools are under no obligation to do anything, but this student’s school is willing to work with the student. In this episode, I’m going to go over my advice on what to do in this unique situation. This will be great for any homeschoolers out there who have a child with a hidden disability, or any high school spec ed teachers, counselor, or college disability professionals who come across newly diagnosed students. It happens all the time. So, take some notes and even refer this episode to others who may find it helpful. Oh, know that I’ll be talking directly to this parent and include my own parental views on this because my son has dyslexia too. So, keep that in mind as you listen. What I love about this scenario is that it mimics much of what a student may need to do in college, but also what I would want for every 14 year old high schooler with an IEP or 504 plan. From learning about themselves and their own disability, how to adjust to academics, communication, and what accommodations are needed, this is a great episode to demonstrate what a student has to do in college, independently. | Ep 87 Questions to Ask College Accessibility Staff | 14 août 2024 | 00:09:57
There are questions you can ask and should ask of the college accessibility staff. Last week was orienting you to the world of accessibility work, in part, and why some questions cannot be answered. However, these questions you can ask. These questions should be part of you college tour and college choice process. It adds some vital information for students with disabilities that otherwise would get missed and not considered. In this episode. I’ll cover what areas are important like the school's culture and office culture, how are disabilities percieved, student responsibilities, and how to address issues that arise. It’s important to get all the information up front. This is the only way to make the best choice. What’s the best choice? It’s an informed one. Students can ask these questions at any time, even if they are in college. Yet, it’s best to ask before you make your choice of where to go. Should the information be the only consideration, no, but it can be important and make a big difference. Ep 86 Got Accommodation questions? Why you may not get the answers you seek. | Ep 86 Got Accommodation questions? Why you may not get the answers you seek. | 07 août 2024 | 00:11:52
I know the pressure and worry about accommodations and making sure your son or daughter gets what they need. As a parent of a son with specific learning disabilities and dyslexia, I worried about the same thing. I get it. It takes a lot of willpower not to take over the process and get it done. I understand that if it gets done, that is just one less thing about which to worry. You may have some common questions: are the accommodations from high school going to be offered? What other accommodations do schools have? What accommodations could get approved? Do you have X accommodation for X disability? Logical and understandable questions. So, how come it seems disability staff give you the run-around or cannot answer a few simple questions? As a former accessibility coordinator, here’s my answer. | Ep 82 Time Management for College- Developing the Right Mindset | 10 juil. 2024 | 00:17:35
Developing the right mindset for time management for college is a critical change some students don't make. It's unfortunate because being more skilled at time management can mean the world for your grades. It also means having more social time, more fun, less stress, and being responsible. If students don't develop the skills, then they have a harder time succeeding. The major barriers are a student's mindset, and the skills needed for time management in college. Why start with mindset? Think of it this way. If a student is not invested in managing their time or has certain beliefs about time management, that can hinder or even stop a student from developing the skills they need. This episode is a module directly from my course Time Management Essentials for College Students. I teach you how to develop the right mindset around time management. I've seen some students just don't know how to develop the skill, while others think managing their time is a hindrance. Both need the skill and can benefit from having an effective mindset around time. Are you on my email list? | Ep. 80 Self-advocacy for invisible disabilities. | 26 juin 2024 | 00:15:57
I’ve said it before. K-12 does a horrible job of teaching self-advocacy. I find it tragic and neglectful that it’s not taught. A ton of people advocate for it, emphasize it, and even set goals for it. But they all get it wrong. What’s the best way to teach it and what do you need to do for your student to learn to self-advocate? Here are eight episodes that focus all on self-advocacy for students with ADHD, learning disabilities like dyslexia, and mental health conditions. If you're new to self-advocacy, these episodes will be a great primer for developing this in your student.. Self-advocacy all starts with self-awareness and builds from there. I've said it before and will continue saying it. You cannot advocate from a position of ignorance. As your student builds their awareness of their disability and how it affects them, their knowledge increases as does their ability and confidence to speak about it. | Ep. 79 5 Steps to College Preparation. | 19 juin 2024 | 00:16:40
Being prepared and preparing your student for college are shared goals. The better they are prepared, the less regret you have and possibly less stress. How do you get your senior with a hidden disability prepared to make the shift to college? For students with ADHD, learning disabilities, dyslexia, and mental health conditions, there is a lot more to prepare. It's not just getting bedding, totes, and a mini-refigerator. It's about mindset and expectations, self-awareness and knowledge about your disability, self-advocacy, time management, and focusing on mental health. Each one of these areas requires time, focus, and intentionality. All are crucial components to collge success. It's best to get these steps down before your student steps foot on a college campus. If you wait, then your student has to play catch-up while trying to cope with the emotional stress and anxiety, and maintain grades and academic workload. That's a lot to ask. It's why I like letting you know ahead of time so you can prepare.
