In this episode of A Changed Mind, David Bayer unpacks Ho'oponopono, the four phrase Hawaiian practice millions have encountered online, and answers the question that kept him skeptical of it for years: if someone else hurt you, why are you the one saying I'm sorry?
He starts by correcting the biggest misconception. Ho'oponopono did not begin as four phrases repeated alone in a bedroom. The word roughly means to correct or make right, and traditionally it was relational: families coming together, often with an elder facilitating, bringing a rupture into the open and restoring the relationship. David contrasts that with how most of us actually handle resentment. We replay the conversation in the car. The event happened five years ago and the other person has forgotten it, but inside us it is still happening.
He traces how the modern version emerged through Hawaiian teacher Morrnah Simeona, who removed the requirement that everyone involved participate. That change matters more than it sounds. What if the person will not speak to you, or died 20 years ago? Your healing cannot depend on their willingness. From there he explains Dr. Hugh Len's concept of 100 percent responsibility, with a line he is careful about: responsibility and culpability are not the same thing. Someone else can be entirely responsible for what they did, and you can still work with what it produced in you.
David is also explicit about where the historical teaching ends and his own interpretation begins. He retells the famous Hawaii State Hospital story and states plainly that he has not found documentation supporting it, so it should be treated as lore. Then he reads the four phrases through the belief work he has taught for 15 years, and closes with a practice you can run on your next trigger: ask what it is revealing, follow the emotion down to the belief underneath, run the phrases, then ask what you choose to believe now and who you would be if that were true. Forgiveness does not make you passive. You may still confront the person or set the boundary. It means you act from choice rather than from the wound.
Memorable Quotes"The problems appearing in your external reality are actually revealing something that needs to be healed within your own consciousness." "Forgiveness doesn't change what happened. Forgiveness changes whether or not you allow what happened to continue to exist in your current reality." "You change the scenery without changing the pattern... Forgiveness isn't saying what happened was okay. It's saying what happened no longer gets to determine who I am." Connect With David

In this episode of A Changed Mind, David Bayer makes the case that the most important skill you can develop right now is not learning more, it is learning how to decide for yourself what is actually true.
He starts with a gap in how all of us were educated. Most people spend 12 to 20 years becoming educated, and almost none of it addresses the questions that determine the quality of a life. Who am I. Where do my beliefs come from. How does reality actually work. You can meet someone with two master's degrees and a PhD who has never investigated why they believe what they believe, or where their definition of success came from. David traces the arc most people follow, school, career, company, house, and the moment around 35 or 45 when they look around and ask, is this it. Those were the exact questions that started his own journey.
The core argument: you were not born believing what you believe. You absorbed it from parents, school, culture, religion, and now algorithms, and there is nothing wrong with that, since nobody can verify everything independently. The problem is that borrowed information quietly becomes borrowed belief, and you stop recognizing it was ever given to you. Outsource your beliefs and you outsource your reality.
David then draws on a Yuval Noah Harari keynote about why fiction has a structural advantage over truth: truth is complicated, truth is expensive in effort, and fiction can be manufactured almost infinitely. He extends it with the harder half, that the truth inside us is the one we avoid, and speaks from his own recovery, the failed business, the blackouts, and how much easier it was to keep telling himself a story about just partying on the weekends. He closes practical, with a belief audit you can run on any area of your life, and a line that matters coming from someone who teaches this material: stop confusing authority with truth, including his own.

David explains how multiple versions of your reality already exist and that true change comes from shifting your identity, not just your actions.

Memorable QuotesโWho you are is actually a choice. It may be who youโve been up until now, and because itโs who youโve been, youโve accumulated evidence that compels you to believe this is who you areโbut that doesnโt mean itโs who you have to continue being.โ โMost of us believe, โIโll feel relaxed when I make the money. Iโll feel confident when I find the relationship.
