On today’s episode, Kunle is joined by Parker Olson, Founder of Forij, a healthy and sustainable granola and meal bar infused with mushroom’s brain and body benefits.

Parker tried different products like mushroom tea alternatives, mushroom coffee, liquid extracts, etc., but none made him love to take it every day because of their taste so he did his own decoctions. SE8 EP03: Cash Conversion Cycle: Every Rapid Growing eCommerce Business Uses this Financial Growth Lever w/ Peter Beckman21 Feb 202300:55:28

On today’s episode, Kunle is joined by Peter Beckman, Co-Founder & CEO of Treyd, a Fintech startup that provides supplier financing to small and fast-growing companies that trade internationally. The company's solution enables UK and Nordic-based businesses to pay their suppliers in advance, which solves a major problem faced by many businesses that sell products but struggle to purchase enough inventory due to cash flow constraints.

Peter explains that the idea for Treyd came from his own experience as an entrepreneur and his co-founder's background in Fintech and crypto. The company was incubated in an accelerator program and took around four months to go to market.

The interview also covers Treyd's expansion plans, its target market, and how it differentiates itself from other Fintech startups in the same space. Peter also discusses the interest rates charged by Treyd and how they vary depending on the individual customer's needs and financial standing.  And also cover Treyd’s supplier vetting process, which includes KYC and background checks on every supplier, as well as a quality inspection option for new suppliers.

Finally, they emphasize the importance of optimizing cash conversion cycles for eCommerce brands, as it determines how fast they can grow. In terms of industry trends, the CEO notes that the global supply chain is starting to improve after a challenging period, and having multiple channels (D2C and wholesale) is proving to be beneficial for many eCommerce brands.

SE8 EP01: Mid-Day Squares: The Power of Personal Branding and Storytelling for digital-first CPG Brands w/ Jake Karls07 Feb 202301:21:18

This episode features a special guest, Jake Karls, co-founder and face of the fast-growing good-for-you CPG confectionary brand, Mid-Day Squares. Jake, along with his sister Lezlie Karls and brother-in-law Nick Saltarelli, are known for sharing their entrepreneurial journey on TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube, giving customers a unique behind-the-scenes look at building a business.

With sales on track to hit $17 million by the end of their fiscal year in May 2023, more than double what they did in 2021, Mid-Day Squares aims to be a modern chocolate company with functional ingredients, a challenger brand, AND a disruptor to the 140 Billion dollar chocolate industry.

Listen in as we discuss Jake's journey from overcoming low grades, business failures, and rejection upon rejection to building a 96% automated factory and raising $16.7 million in investment to set the foundation for Mid-Day Squares' rapid growth trajectory.

Mid-Day Squares is on a mission to be a modern chocolate company with functional ingredients. More than that, they’re on a mission to build a community of fans rather than just customers, and it’s having powerful results for their business. Stay tuned to learn how Jake and his Co-Founders at Mid-Day Squares are doing it, and uncover insights direct from their multi-million dollar brand playbook that you can use to build your own authentic challenger brand – even in a hyper-competitive billion-dollar industry.

One thing that is evident about Jake is he's not afraid to fail, and even when his first business didn't work out, he kept pushing forward – and he puts it all out there for the world to see. From studying to be an actuary to dropping out and starting a fitness business to ultimately co-founding Mid-Day Squares – Jake’s story is a fascinating and unorthodox one that you won’t want to miss. It’s a story, and the authenticity behind it, that Jake, along with his sister and brother-in-law, have used to build a media empire around Mid-Day Squares. There are some powerful lessons here for Founders and eCommerce professionals about the impact storytelling, and social media can have on your brand if you can have the courage to stand out and set yourself apart. All this comes down to the powerful ways of thinking and mindsets that Jake has developed through the good times and the bad. You will notice that the mindset of an eCommerce professional will be a key theme not only in this podcast but in the 2x eCommerce podcast throughout 2023. Mindset is what makes the tactics that we cover here in the 2x eCommerce podcast every episode work in what is a cross-functional and sometimes rowdy retail environment. It is the foundation, the driving force behind an entrepreneur's ability to create, innovate, and commit to bold, industry-disrupting visions. And Jake has it in spades. I have no doubt that you'll leave this episode feeling inspired and fired up to bring the same ingredients that Jake brings to Mid-Day Squares to your own business. So without further ado, let’s get started!

On today’s episode, Kunle is joined by Jim Dorey, Senior VP of Inserra Supermarkets Inc., a supermarket chain owned by a family and works with ShopRite and PriceRite.

Every big hit story starts with a simple one. Jim Dorey’s success in working with two big retailers in the US started with him sitting in a corner of a small grocery store. Exposed to “people from all walks of life”, Jim became mindful and empathetic of people that come into the store and took the lessons he learned in building his life and his success.

Equipped with discipline, lessons he learned early in his life, and the privilege of getting into Harvard Business School in an executive management program, Jim made his way up to being the president of PriceRite from being a Procurement Manager in Wakefern. Being able to recognize his mistakes and learn from other successful people’s mistakes led him to write his book, Just Keep Swimming.

S07 EP45: BattlBox: How this Video-Content-Obsessed Survival Gear Brand Got its Own Netflix Show w/ John Roman16 Dec 202201:59:34

On today’s episode, Kunle is joined by John Roman, Co-Founder & CEO of Battlbox, a subscription-based company with tactical and survival products perfect for outdoor enthusiasts but also caters to non-outdoor enthusiasts.

Everything was normal until John decided, after graduating from university, that he wanted to become a professional poker player. He was fascinated with the game and got deep into it, playing 12 to 13 hours a day for 4.5 years. He may have lost money here and there but the skills that he acquired were invaluable and worth it. That same skill set was what catapulted him to become a successful entrepreneur.

John invested in creating content showcasing Battlbox products with honest reviews from Youtube content creators. With this, Battlbox was able to build a community with people helping each other out. He has a great team and some of them were Battlbox’s best customers. The quality content led to their organic growth and landed them a Netflix series, as well.

His eyes were opened to different perspectives in life as he traveled while his heart found its better half, Mariah, who also is his business partner.

S07 EP43: Johnathan Price Leveraged his Personal Brand and Social Platforms to build a $20M/ year Passion Business in 5 Years02 Dec 202201:29:47

On today’s episode, Kunle is joined by Johnathan Price, Founder & CEO of Down4Sound, a YouTube eCommerce company that serves car audio enthusiasts from around the globe.

Success is not made overnight. Johnathan Price proves this adage. At an early age, his parents taught him that hard work and consistency create success and that kind of success is more fulfilling. Chopping cotton at the age of 14, a truck with a loud bassy noise piqued his curiosity until it became his hobby. After a nudge from the universe, Johnathan created Down4Sound, a company with a $20 million annual revenue.

Originally, Jonathan created Down4Sound as a means to do something he is passionate about and catering to fellow car audio enthusiasts. Now, Down4Sound has been the fastest-growing car audio distributor in the history of car audio. Starting on YouTube and with the help of the right mentors, Johnathan creates videos that primarily show his passion for car audio with selling only as a secondary motivation.

This episode is especially inspiring as Kunle and Johnathan talk about his humble beginnings, a bundle of words of wisdom and encouragement, Down4Sound’s team, supply chain, revenue stream, and content creation that would truly captivate customers. This is an amazing episode for aspiring entrepreneurs who need a gentle nudge to start a business they are passionate about.

S07 EP42: eCommerce M&A Specialist, Chris Shipferling: Why You Should Not Sell Your Company25 Nov 202200:56:22

On today’s episode, Kunle is joined by Chris Shipferling, Co-Founder of both South Col, an accelerator program that incubates retail business, and Global Wired Advisors, an eCommerce M&A firm that helps business owners sell their businesses.

With the pandemic and recession happening hand-in-hand, Chris and his founding partners at Global Wired started to notice changes and slowdowns in the macro and micro-economic trends. Escala, a Tel-Aviv-based business consulting firm, presented the idea of incubating businesses to which later on, they created a joint venture and started South Col.

With its name taken from Mt. Everest’s final base camp and known to be a No Man’s Land, South Col stands for the journey and hardships that businesses face, especially during a time of pandemic and recession. South Col provides that nudge to finally be at the top. With Escala’s systematization and South Col’s planning and strategics, retail businesses are “car-washed” to raise their value and create a better exit for its owners.

It’s an enlightening episode as you’d hear Kunle and Chris talk more about South Col’s brand diligence, growth strategy, investment criteria, channel expansion, macro, and micro-economic trends, as well as different perspectives on the state of businesses during the pandemic and through a recession.

S07 EP32: Billy Price's Journey from Tragedy to Building a Meaningful Footwear Brand28 Oct 202201:01:09

On today’s episode, Kunle is joined by Billy Price, Co-Founder of BILLY Footwear, a shoe company that creates inclusive, functional, and fashion-trendy shoes.

Living an adventure-filled life as a child and getting into a university to get a degree in mechanical engineering, Billy Price’s whole life was already planned ahead of him until his light was dimmed after a tragic fall from a three-story high window when he was 18. When he thought that this life-changing event had already confined him in his wheelchair forever, Darin, his childhood friend, gifted him a pair of shoes that was made especially for him, and little did he know that these shoes would make his light radiate even stronger.

BILLY Footwear began as a simple gift from a friend to another friend in need. Now, they have sold over a million pairs of shoes and are continuously growing, adding value to people’s lives. Billy shares their unique marketing strategy, getting into wholesaling and retail channels, and the inspiration behind their shoe styles.

This episode is especially inspiring as you’d hear Kunle and Billy talk about the successes and struggles in building a company and staying true to its values no matter how much time passes and how big their company grows.

However, when Bloomreach acquired Exponea, there was no opportunity for a CMO at the time. She had to be mentored by Bloomreach’s CEO, Raj De Datta.

Working with around 850 global brands, Bloomreach, and with Amanda as its CMO, offers best-in-class marketing for its clients and uses zero-party data to create an incredible shopping experience that is tailored to each customer’s product search behavior. Amanda shares her insights and tips on how personalized marketing could offer value to each customer, even for big brands and companies.

This episode is insightful as you’d hear Kunle and Amanda discuss the importance of product search in identifying customer behaviors to create market segmentations and how automated marketing can be personal for each customer.

S07 EP30: Nufabrx: How this Innovative HealthWear Brand Dominated Retail Distribution and then DTC w/ Jordan Schindler14 Oct 202201:05:12

On today’s episode, Kunle is joined by Jordan Schindler, Founder & CEO of Nufabrx, an innovative healthwear that combines medicine and garments that solve patient compliance.

It all started with a pillowcase problem. Jordan Schindler was having issues with his skin and had tried creams, pills, etc. to no avail. His dermatologist recommended that he wash his pillowcases 2 to 3 times a week. For Jordan and most people, that would not be doable. Thinking of how to create a solution to his personal problem, Nufabrx was conceptualized.

Fabrics are around us and are one of the most unnoticed but affect our day-to-day living. We wear them, sit or sleep on them, and rub them on our bodies. Nufabrx’s innovation created a one-stop shop for our garments and medicine as they create healthwear products that are researched, patented, and created with the best combination of scientific research, customer feedback, and data.

This episode is especially exciting as you’d hear Kunle and Jordan talk about product innovation that will interest not only entrepreneurs but consumers themselves. This is an amazing episode for consumer brands to learn about risk reduction, product research and development, and most importantly, creating better products through customer and expert feedback.

S07 EP21: What you need to know about Bookkeeping for eCommerce w/ Nathan Hirsch12 Aug 202200:39:27

On today’s episode, Kunle is joined by Nathan Hirsch, CEO of EcomBalance,  a bookkeeping service provider for eCommerce businesses that gives detailed monthly reports and analysis so that business owners can make smarter decisions geared toward growth.

Nathan Hirsch was the founder and CEO of FreeeUp, a freelance platform that grew into a multimillion-dollar business until he sold it and exited in 2020. During the pandemic, he also went on and created two other platforms called Outsource School which teaches the best practices for hiring freelancers, and EcomBalance.

A client working with EcomBalance will be provided a team leader and bookkeeping staff and financial controller who all work together and specialize in eCommerce. Nathan emphasizes the need for a bookkeeper who will keep your books clean monthly and can provide reports on time as it is essential for most things like taxes and for buyers to be able to build interest and trust in the business.

It’s an insightful episode as you’d hear Kunle and Nathan talk about Nathan’s experience in building his businesses and being financially free for life, tips as an eCommerce seller as well as a service provider, the importance of clean books, and creating a clear division between the roles of an entrepreneur and a bookkeeper/accountant. They also give their perspectives on the eCommerce industry in 2022. This is a great episode for eCommerce sellers who want to build and scale a trustworthy business.

S07 EP20: How to Build Supply Chain Resilience as DTC Commerce Organisation w/ Dhruv Saxena05 Aug 202200:54:35

On today’s episode, Kunle is joined by Dhruv Saxena, co-founder and CEO of ShipBob, a market-leading warehouse management that provides warehouses as a service, or 3PL to largely Shopify, BigCommerce, and direct-to-consumer eCommerce space.

Experimenting with side projects such as eCommerce startup while being a full-time software engineer, Dhruv, with his business partner and friend, Divey had to endure long lines at post offices during lunch breaks to mail customers’ orders. Faced with the difficulty in mailing orders and being too small a business for 3PLs, Dhruv utilized his knowledge as a software engineer and started working on the automation of mailing their products which birthed the idea of ShipBob.

Building ShipBob from the ground and starting with a 10,000-square feet warehouse, Dhruv shares ShipBob’s aim to help small local eCommerce businesses access ShipBob’s network and wide-range fulfillment services. Being part SaaS and part warehouse, he offers new innovations such as Merchant Plus, a software that small businesses can use to manage their own warehouse while being able to access ShipBob’s network.

This episode is especially inspiring as you’d hear Kunle and Dhruv talk about how eCommerce businesses are doing despite facing macroeconomic headwinds. You will also get to learn about the early years of ShipBob, their work culture, and how customers and merchants were always at the forefront in making the decisions and direction for ShipBob. Take advantage of the golden nuggets dropped in this episode, especially if you’re a small business owner looking to level up your logistics.

S07 EP19: Your Cross-Border Commerce Experience Stack w/ Matthew Merrilees29 Jul 202200:49:38

On today’s episode, Kunle is joined by Matthew Merrilees, the North America CEO of Global-e, a FinTech cross-border eCommerce enablement platform that enables brands and retailers to deliver purchase experiences to worldwide customers.

After being injected into international logistics right after college, Matthew saw brands voicing out opportunities on how logistics partners can help to drive more upstream impacts to merchant customers before having to ship the package. That’s where his interest piqued and began his journey. He began his career in DHL Express before moving on to FedEx. That’s when he saw that both powerhouses had the goal of bringing international expertise to brands.

With the knowledge and experience he has garnered from two logistic powerhouses, he went on to join Global-e. Matthew opens the doors and shares how Global-e uses a Geo-IP detection system to instantly apply pricing strategies to cater to local and international customers. He even goes in deeper and unveils the fundamental-first principle for cross-border eCommerce and how Global-e is operating a business-to-business-to-consumer transaction.

It’s an enlightening episode as you’d hear Kunle and Matthew talk more about cross-border commerce, Global-e’s pricing rounding engine, and their method of keeping their merchants safe from international fraud. They also share their views on the cash-on-delivery approach that is widely popular in Eastern European geos, Middle East, and Southeast Asia. This is truly an episode of merchants looking into cross-border eCommerce to further the reach of their brand.
