The Women In Radiology Education, or WIRED, podcast was created with our group’s mission in mind: empowering, supporting, and inspiring women. We intend to interview women in all stages of the path to a career in radiology—young ladies interested in STEM, medical students, residents, academic attendings, and community practitioners—and share their insight and wisdom with our listeners in hopes of ultimately reducing the overall disparity regarding women in radiology.

Dr. Andrea Doria is a Professor of Radiology and Pediatrics at the University of Toronto, Vice Chair of Clinical Practice Improvement and Radiology Research Director, and Imaging Lead of Personalized Child Health at SickKids Hospital. In this episode, Dr. Doria shares her journey into pediatric radiology, reflecting on her experiences as a clinician and researcher in the field, as well as the impact of her diverse training background, including an MBA from MIT and a master's degree in epidemiology, on her professional development and leadership approach. We discuss unique aspects of pediatric imaging, including its focus on patient interaction and the gratifying opportunity to make a positive impact early in a person’s life. Dr. Doria provides insights into her research on enhancing efficiency in radiology training programs, including innovative solutions to address bottlenecks in resident and fellow research production. Lastly, she also speaks passionately about her advocacy for cultivating diverse leadership in radiology and implementing equitable hiring practices to close the gender gap in the specialty and beyond. Dr. Janice May Newsome is a Chief & Director of Interventional Radiology at Emory University School of Medicine. She was recently named the recipient of The Women in IR Champion Award, an award presented by the Society of Interventional Radiology to recognize an individual who has consistently made a significant contribution to the advancement of women in IR, such as in sponsorship, mentorship, teaching, promotion, advocacy, and recruitment. In this episode, Dr. Newsome shares her insights on the significance of mentorship in radiology and how it can shape the careers of medical professionals. Then, we discuss the gender gap within the field with Dr. Newsome dispelling some of the popular myths surrounding women's involvement in interventional radiology (IR) before touching on strategies for achieving work-life integration, including intentionality with one's time. Finally, we discuss the impact of social media on the medical community, examining its opportunities and challenges.

Dr. Lucy B. Spalluto, M.D., MPH, is a graduate of University of Virginia and earned her medical degree from University of Virginia School of Medicine. She completed a residency in Diagnostic Radiology at Brown University and a fellowship in Women’s Imaging at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Dr. Spalluto joined the Vanderbilt faculty in 2014 as Assistant Professor and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2019. Her clinical work focuses on breast imaging, including mammography, ultrasound, MRI and image-guided procedures.

In 2019, Dr. Spalluto completed the VA Quality Scholars Health Services Research Fellowship and Vanderbilt Master of Public Health program. She leads an active research program focused on addressing health disparities, designing health equity focused learning materials for healthcare professionals, and mentoring residents and medical students interested in health equity.

Currently, she is the Vice Chair of Health Equity, Director of Women in Radiology, an initiative she co-founded in 2015, and Associate Director, Office of Diversity and Inclusion for the Department of Radiology. She serves on the American College of Radiology's Commission on Patient- and Family-Centered Care and Commission for Women and Diversity, and as the immediate past President of the American Association for Women in Radiology (AAWR).

Dr. Stefanie Woodard is a breast imaging specialist and attending radiologist at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). She completed her medical training at the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine, followed by a residency and fellowship at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and Penn State Hershey Breast Center, respectively. Currently, she serves as the Director of the Breast Imaging Resident Rotation and Director of Breast MRI at UABMC, and has been involved in several academic and mentorship roles, including serving on committees such as the RSNA Abstract Review and the SBI Mentorship Subcommittee. In this episode, Dr. Woodard shares insights into her journey from private practice to academia, her innovative research on virtual reality for breast biopsy simulations, and her leadership in radiology mentorship. Dr. Elizabeth K. Arleo is a Board-Certified radiologist specializing in Breast and Body Imaging, and a Fellow of the American College of Radiology (FACR), the Society of Breast Imaging (FSBI), and the American Association for Women in Radiology (FAAWIR). She is a Professor of Radiology at Weill Cornell Medical College and an Attending Radiologist at the New York-Presbyterian Hospital. Dr. Arleo also serves as the Editor-in-Chief of the radiology journal Clinical Imaging and was the 2019 American Association for Women in Radiology (AAWR) President. A graduate of Yale College and Yale University Medical School, Dr. Arleo brings many experiences and accolades to the table, including the Distinguished Educator Award from the 2018 New York Roentgen Society and the 2022 Alice Ettinger Distinguished Achievement Award.
