« It's never one person who creates a market. A market needs a lot of participants. »
How do you turn a designer's work into something museums want to collect and people want to live with? This week on TheBoldWay, I sit down with Marc Benda, co-founder of Friedman Benda, at the gallery in Chelsea, New York.
Born in Switzerland and raised among collectors, Marc learned to look closely at objects before he learned the business of selling them. He arrived in New York with photographs of pieces he had found in Europe and met Barry Friedman, the only dealer willing to sit down with him. Their partnership would bring the work of Ettore Sottsass and Ron Arad to new American audiences and help make room for a new generation of designers.
Marc explains what a gallery actually does for an artist, how prices are built without sacrificing a long-term market, and why collectors, curators, museums and the press must all take part in a designer's rise. We discuss nendo, Joris Laarman, the move from New York to Los Angeles and Paris, the challenge of growing without diluting your taste, and the place of Instagram and AI in the future of galleries.
A conversation about conviction, judgment and the human relationships behind the objects we come to regard as important.
In this episode, you'll discover:
How a 21-year-old Marc Benda persuaded Barry Friedman to take a look at the objects he was selling.
Why Friedman Benda approached designers as artists rather than asking them to make collections.
How a market forms through artists, collectors, curators, institutions and the press.
Why the right price protects an artist's career instead of maximizing one sale.

[EXTRACT] Why even an auction expert overbids | Caitlin Donovan (JOOPITER)
Why leave an established house to help build a new one? Caitlin reflects on that decision, offers advice to young collectors and explains how handbags became a category driven by women. She then breaks down the scarcity behind Hermès and Patek Philippe before admitting that, when bidding begins, even she can pay more than she intended.

Pharrell Williams had objects that had mattered to him but were now sitting in storage. He wanted them to have a new life, yet felt traditional auction houses did not understand the culture around them. Caitlin tells the origin story of JOOPITER, its first sale, the growing market for sports memorabilia and the trust required when someone buys an expensive object without seeing it in person.

« Once you’ve placed those first two, three, four bids, in your mind, it’s yours. »
What makes someone bid millions for a dinosaur, a pair of Kobe Bryant’s sneakers or an object that once belonged to Pharrell Williams? This week on TheBoldWay, I meet Caitlin Donovan, Global Head of Sale at JOOPITER, the digital auction house founded by Pharrell.
Born and raised in New York, Caitlin studied criminology and imagined a career in law. A job in handbags led her to Heritage Auctions, then to Christie’s, where she helped build the handbag department and brought sneakers and streetwear into its sales. After more than nine years there, she joined JOOPITER to help build a new kind of auction house.
We go behind the scenes of the decisions that give an object its value: finding a seller, telling the story, setting an estimate and earning a collector’s trust. Caitlin explains why Pharrell created JOOPITER, what makes sports memorabilia so powerful, and how scarcity drives the secondary market for Hermès bags and Patek Philippe watches.
It is also a conversation about ambition, emotion and authority. Caitlin admits that even she can get carried away when bidding, and reflects on the toughness she felt she needed as a young woman at Christie’s. What does it take to make room for a new generation of collectors while building a career on your own terms?
In this episode, you’ll discover:
Why Pharrell founded JOOPITER when established auction houses did not know how to present his collection.
How an auction works, from the estimate and reserve price to the buyer’s premium.
Why storytelling and trust can persuade collectors to buy expensive objects sight unseen.
