The Non Perfect Parents Club: The traumatic effects of a misdiagnosis

Saison 5 · Épisode 1

dimanche 9 juin 2024Durée 45:40

In this episode in our new series, my guest (who wishes to remain anonymous) tells us her 'story' about a situation that her family found themselves in in 2017 when her son was just 3 months old.

My guest took her 3-month old son to the GP as he had a mark on his back that she'd not seen before. Medical professionals became concerned as it looked like a bruise, and a Section 47 Enquiry (Child protection assessment) was instigated.

The family underwent an incredibly challenging time, before it was discovered that baby actually had a birthmark. Congenital Dermal Melanocytosis (formerly called a Mongolian Blue Spot) is often mistaken for a bruise, leaving families vulnerable to accusations of harm.

My guest wants to raise awareness of this misdiagnosis, encourage parents to do their own research and ask questions when faced with difficult health or social care situations, and crucially, ask health professionals to always remain curious, non-judgemental and collaborative when working with families.

The Non Perfect Parents Club: Starting Reception

Saison 4

mardi 23 juillet 2024Durée 01:02:52

In this episode I am joined by Becky, a mum of 2 and a reception teacher.

We discuss tips and advice for parents who have a child starting Reception in September, and Becky answers some of your questions. This episode is jam packed full of advice and hopefully lots of reassurance for any parents who are apprehensive about the transition and the change that is coming.

We cover:

  • What are the most helpful things that parents can be doing to prepare their child for the transition to reception.
  • How parents can prepare for the change
  • Uniform
  • Things you can be doing to encourage skills that will be needed for reading and writing
  • Play
  • How a teacher would understand a non verbal child's way of communicating
  • What else parents need to buy
  • How to deal with the lack of information after getting so much from nursery
  • What to do if your child is a fussy eater
  • Friendships
  • How we can help summer born children to settle in reception

The most important thing is to talk; to your child, and to their teacher/ the school staff.

Thank you to Reading Fairy Lancaster for sponsoring this episode.

Here is the playdough recipe that I use:

1 cup of water

1 cup of flour

1/2 cup of salt

2x tbsp oil

2x tbsp cream of tartar (or 1 sachet)

Mix all ingredients in a pan and heat on a medium heat. Keep stirring. You will feel the mixture start to thicken, keep stirring until it sticks together and becomes playdough. Remove from pan, let cool and knead. wrap in cling film or put in an airtight container to store.

(If it's sticky, you've usually either not kept it on the heat for long enough or not added enough salt.)

In this episode, I am joined by Jennifer, Mum of 3. In Jen's last episode she was midway through the appeal process for high school for her second child and we talked lots about that. We discuss the unfairness of the how the whole system works and share some nuggets of advice for parents who are currently applying for high schools, as well as a hilarious story involving brand new school shoes, lost property, a leaky drink and a carrier bag...!

The Non Perfect Parents Club: Children can form money habits as early as 7 years old

Saison 4

samedi 16 septembre 2023Durée 29:11

In this episode I am joined by Emma from the Instagram page Pounds and Piggybanks as we chat about how to talk to our children about money. Emma noticed that no-one is teaching our children about money- the curriculum teaches the bear minimum- and is aiming to bridge that gap. She notes that children can form money habits as early as age 7 so it's a good idea to start conversations early- although all is not lost if you haven't yet done that.Emma tells us that a big part of the conversation and a good place to start is understanding our children's knowledge when it comes to money. Ask them; what is money? Why do we have it? What to do with it? And quite possibly an interesting question, what do adults spend their money on?! We also talk about money mindset and why it's important to talk positively about money, and the psychology behind a negative money mindset. Which made me think about the things I say and that I need to reframe some of them and flip the narrative. Emma talks about finding fun ways as a parent to bring the concept of money to life and why age appropriate conversations about money are important to have, as can be having a family plan. To do these it doesn't matter how much or how little money you have. I love the idea of getting older children involved in researching something like a family day out or searching for something that's the most cost effective. All too often we take the responsibility, how many conversations can we open up and skills can we encourage by inviting them in! Emma's page is FULL of fantastic information, you can find her here: Emma Webb | Financial Literacy for Families (@poundsandpiggybanks) • Instagram photos and videosThis link has different approved resources and gives an age range suitability: https://www.fincap.org.uk/en/articles/find-financial-education-near-you Statistics show that 25% of working families had less than £100 in savings, and 50% of working age adults didn’t feel confident in managing money. 75% of pupils in school wanted to learn more about money (rising to 85% of 16-18 year olds) and research suggests 3.5m children in the UK aren’t receiving a satisfactory financial education.

The Non Perfect Parents Club: It's just blood

Saison 4

mardi 1 août 2023Durée 30:02

In this episode I am joined by Lauren from Wear 'Em Out reusable period pads who is on a mission to ensure our children are educated about their options when it comes to period products. Our children, because this is a conversation that EVERYONE needs to be a part of. We cover a whole lot of ground and discuss how, by educating our children about reusable pads and that they are an option, we are giving them choice. We discuss how disposable pads are 90% single use plastic and contain approx 3000 toxic chemicals which are impacting hormones and causing hormone issues. (Not to mention the landfill/ environmental issues.) Lauren talks about how it's about doing what works for you- Even if you just swap a night time pad, you are making a difference to your body. We talk about the 'ick' factor and the embarrassment and shame that are ingrained in us when it comes to our periods, and how this needs to change, particularly in schools. Lauren questions why we feel disgusted by our own period blood but we can wipe shit off our child's arse?! It's just blood and it's not dirty. We talk about understanding our periods and our cycles and Lauren offers some tips on how to introduce reusable pads to your child. I talk about how this isn't just about me now, it's about my daughter too and I'm trying to educate myself so that she can be educated too. This is about giving the next generation choices. The Non Perfect Parents Club: Photos are so much more than just keeping a memory

Saison 4

dimanche 23 juillet 2023Durée 26:22

In this episode I am joined by Liat from Designed Memories to talk about all things photos! She reminds us how photos are so much more than just keeping a memory. We discuss the difference in photos now and how it's important for us Mums to be in them! I'm sure most of us can relate to all of Liat's points about our snap happy habits as a parent, or about the now completely irrelevant screen shots/ photos from whatsapp messages sat in our camera rolls...! And whilst we may have all the good intentions to organise/ print them- does it ever happen?! Liat gives us her top tips to get organised and to keep our precious photos safe. (Find them here: https://designedmemories.co.uk/photo-organising-guide/ )You can find Liat here: Facebook Treasured Memories Photobooks (@designed_memories) • Instagram photos and videos Photobook Design - Designed Memories

The Non Perfect Parents Club: You control social media not the other way round

Saison 4

dimanche 11 juin 2023Durée 50:42

In this SPECIAL EPISODE I am joined by Rubbi from Wild and Form Digital to talk about parenting and social media- an episode I have been very keen to create! There are SO many levels to social media and as a parent it's hard to even know where to start when it comes to our children's social media use. Rubbi breaks things down realistically and honestly, and offers her top tips for both parents and our children. As a parent herself, Rubbi understands not only the worries and concerns, but also how it can be hard to set social media boundaries when our children are pushing them. I ask are we protecting our children from and on social media enough? And we touch on all sorts of other aspects of social media/internet use. I feel like we only just scratched the surface here and there is so much more we could discuss. If you have a child who has any sort of access to the internet or a smartphone, this episode is definitely a must listen to. The Non Perfect Parents Club: Thought of the day

Saison 4

vendredi 20 janvier 2023Durée 04:39

I want to try something a little bit different after I saw this post on Facebook this morning. I shared with TNPPC members but wanted to share with my listeners too.

Here is a 'short' and a thought of the day provided by Dr Naomi Fisher (Will reference below). So often screentime is seen as negative and damaging, she offers a different perception on this and I thought it would be helpful to share- it definitely flipped the narrative for me!

In a parenting world full of judgement, I thought this highlighted perfectly why we should always do what we feel is best for our children.
