Ep 52- "Surviving 2 year old sleep: Why is it so tricky and what actually helps"

Sleep for parents with 2 year olds is really challenging because: 

-children often push back on sleep at this age

-there is a lack of boundaries around sleep

-or sleep has been hard for a long time for some families and now as you try and address it, your child is old enough to push back! 

You might be experiencing some of the common challenges for 2 year olds and their sleep:

  •  nap duration issues (eg too much day sleep) 
  • still doing dummy runs 
  • parents taking out of their cots too soon 
  • reliant on feeds/co sleeping or rocking for sleep 
  • sibling and other changes like starting childcare
  • stalling at bedtime 
  • challenging behaviour
  • sleeping in different care environments
  • reliant on milk/removal of milk 
  • lack boundaries around sleep 
  • fussy eating behaviour 
  • parents unsure how to deal with pushback and big emotions around their child's sleep 

This episode deep dives into why these challenges are so hard for families and a step by step framework for you to implement so everyone in your family gets more sleep.

This episode is for you! Mumma, you are not alone. I was you. In this episode I share my personal story of anxiety, PTSD, baby loss, parental loss and how all of these traumas led to excessive anxiety around my child's sleep. 


No village, unable to sleep myself, checking on my baby repeatedly, missing my parents, having no in-laws, dealing with the loss of 3 babies was all too much. 

But it led me to prioritising my child's sleep and having a plan to get him sleeping, gaining a sense of control and sleep for myself. 


If you have ever been anxious or are feeling that way now, this episode will resonate with you.  The episode also gives heaps of practical tips which will support you during stages of minimal sleep so you can come out the other side with a sleeping child, more well rested and of course less anxious!

Have you been or thinking of going to sleep school? You have probably heard about many experiences of parents who have been. There are many successful stories but on a daily basis we hear traumatic and unsuccessful experiences which leads us to question why this may be the case. 

On this episode, we dive into 7 key issues around this model and why families end up reaching out for support in a 1:1 capacity despite going to these environments as they chase better sleep for their children. 

This episode, addresses the notion that sleep school is not a holistic approach which means there are so many elements that are missed,  there is a lack of ongoing education or long term success, what working on sleep in a different environment to your own house means and that jumping to a technique instead of ticking off all the building blocks to sleep will mean your child still isn't getting the sleep they require. 

By employing a holistic approach to sleep, it means each variable is addressed and THEN when you undertake a sleep technique it is smooth and creates little distress.

EPISODE 40 - “My baby has slept through the night since 9 weeks old!”

This episode is Georgina's story of supporting her child to create excellent sleep habits which ultimately came together to create a young baby who sleeps through the night. Yes, this happened early on. How? In this episode Georgina shares why she was so focused on a proactive approach to her baby's sleep because of the traumatic events that had occurred in her pregnancy as well as concern for her  emotional and mental wellbeing as a parent with no hands on support during the long days with a newborn after these traumatic events.

She also shares this story so listeners can hear a positive story of how we can encourage babies to sleep well from the onset. There is understanding and empathy that is given to families who are struggling with sleep, equally there is negativity given to the parents that have "good sleepers". There are no good or bad sleepers! Every child has the capacity to sleep well we just need to encourage this process. So it is important we hear stories of babies who sleep beautifully and what the parents did to get their children to this place, so all of the families listening can get more sleep for their families!

The owner of The Breastfeeding Co joins us today sharing her business centered around her lactation tea products. Jordana Edwards shares how her business was born from a colicky baby that wouldn't sleep while she was selling teas at a local market to building to a 2 seven figure business.

But it hasn't been easy! Jordana generously shares her health, business and family story which show resilience, tenacity and how hard work led her to opening a successful tea company, but then needing to rebuild it after some unbelievable obstacles came its way. She shares the same ethos and health values that are shared commonly on this podcast and she has someone very special in her corner to help customize her the teas that are so effective to enhance the breastfeeding teas.

I started this podcast because I had a lot to say! A lot about grief, sleep and nutrition. 

But it has evolved into a lot more! It is also about why The Holistic Sleep Project framework is unique and effective. It is about upholding strong business ethics and ensuring the long-term success of the families we work with. It is about breaking down the stigma attached to sleep work and showing how remarkable it can be without distress for you or you baby.  

This podcast is also about sharing different modalities of holistic health that may support yourself or your children. It is about encouraging listeners to think outside the square. 

This podcast is now recognized Nationally as the second-best podcast in Australian among mothers who are entrepreneurs. And we would love it if you shared it with someone you know. They may not have sleeping issues with their child but I am confident this podcast will help them in another way.

Each time a family comes across a sleep challenge with their little one it is natural to make a change to try and fix it. There may be smaller changes that you make in an attempt to fix the sleep issue. But after days, weeks or months without any resolution, sometimes a family will make a bold, big change. And sometimes this isn't the right approach because it doesn’t solve the problem or makes their child’s sleep challenges worse! 

In this 5 minute Express Sleep Tip Episode, we break down the 3 elements you want to consider before dropping the nap completely. 

We also explore The Holistic Sleep Project’s perspective of gradual transitions instead of dramatic changes which can be abrupt and distressing for babies and toddlers causing unnecessary emotional upset for them.

Jess worked with 3 other Sleep Consultant and STILL wasn't getting any sleep!
This is a captivating story from a mother who had strong instincts that her baby should have been getting more sleep than he was, even though professionals were telling her baby was just "stubborn".

Jess was experiencing all the aspects of sleep challenges with her little one including catnapping and night waking. And despite attempting to co sleeping as a solution which according to those around her "should" have been creating more sleep for Noah, this was not the case. She still wasnt getting long stretches of sleep in the day or night, her child was grizzly and tired and she was completely exhausted.

Jess expresses so eloquently how Georgina's work, personality and strategy is incredibly different and pin points how this all comes together to create a complete sleep transformation and DOES mean your baby will sleep through the night!
