69. (Part 4) Distance Series: WHY Mobility Matters with Neal Valera of Stick Mobility
lundi 28 août 2023 • Durée 46:18
Andrew Hannon and I sit down with Neal Valera, a San Jose-based health, strength, and mobility coach and the Co-Founder of Stick Mobility.
Neal shares how their training sticks serve as a unique tool for athletes of all stripes to improve range of motion, muscle activation, coordination, and body awareness to build a strong foundation for better movement. It also allows athletes to gradually increase their strength in different positions, aiding in injury prevention and rehabilitation.
The Mobility Stick is likewise a powerful tool that golfers can use to enhance performance through the improvement of their balance, grip, and strength. It helps in achieving a controlled range of motion that maximizes swing power, and in easing golfers into certain positions that they might initially find challenging. It also does wonders for joint mobility, making it easier for golfers to manage their wrist, elbow, and shoulder movements.
In the latter half of our conversation, Neal and Andrew discuss the importance of strength and cardio training for those looking to up their golf game. They offer guidance around setting achievable weight loss goals, and debunks common misconceptions, especially among women, about weight training.
About the Guest:
Neal Valera has been coaching strength, mobility, and movement since 2007. His love for sports, martial arts, and outdoor activities have contributed to his lifelong interest in various movement disciplines. Having trained a wide range of body types and fitness levels, Neal believes the common denominator for health, longevity, and performance is improving movement quality. Neal co-founded Stick Mobility in 2015 and is dedicated to helping people discover their physical potential and improve their ability to move well.

68. (Part 3) Distance Series: HOW to Get the Distance You Want with Lisa Longball
jeudi 24 août 2023 • Durée 59:44
Justin Klemballa and I sit down with 8-time Canadian long drive champion Lisa Longball. Together, we unpack the three primary mistakes stopping women from gaining more distance in their golf swing and how to fix them!
We also discuss Lisa's personal training schedule, why muscle memory is way more important than muscular strength, and the vital role of rest in achieving peak performance. We also explore the significance of tempo and having a mental routine alongside a physical one.
Lisa shares her insightful personal experiences as a world-class athlete, including her triumph of hitting the longest drive in women's golf history, and what she did to gain the highest swing speed she's ever achieved.
3 Reasons You Lack Distance in Your Swing (and What to Do Instead)
(06:47) Reason 1: You’re an arms lifter. Because women are naturally more flexible than men, it’s easy to think you’re turning when you’re really just lifting your arms. Lisa recommends looking at your body in two parts: the upper body and the lower body. During the backswing, start with your lead shoulder, forcing you to turn your chest turning away from the ball. On the other hand, during the downswing, maximize the coil and torque you’ve built up by leading with your lower body.
(09:25) Reason 2: Your golf swing sequence is flawed or lacking. “Turn the shirt” on the backswing, freeze, then “turn the skirt” on the downswing. The best way to make this sequence second nature is by practicing dissociation drills, as well as training to move your weight to the instep of the back foot when transitioning from the backswing to the downswing.
(18:43) Reason 3: You don’t finish the golf swing. Most golfers put all their focus on hitting the ball, so that once they make contact, they begin to decelerate and fail to maximize distance as a result. Your clubhead should be at its fastest not on the ball, but three feet past the ball. Always keep this in mind: Hit through the ball, not to the ball.

66. (Part 1) Distance Series: WHY is Gaining Distance So Important with Lou Stagner
jeudi 17 août 2023 • Durée 01:03:14
One of the fundamental principles to leveling up your golf game is to improve your distance. Regardless of skill level, body type, or gender, lower-handicap golfers tend to be longer golfers, while higher-handicap golfers tend to be shorter golfers.
Listen in as Lou Stagner, Arccos Golf Data Insights Lead, breaks down distance as a skill that any golfer can train efficiently and effectively by incorporating a little strategy and a lot of data—600 shots worth of data from the Arcos database, to be precise!
We explore how to maximize distance while carefully considering potential penalties and hazards, as well as factoring in tempo and strike into our swing. We debunk the common fear of losing accuracy when increasing speed.
Lou shares valuable insights from the programs offered by golf fitness gurus Mike Carroll and Jamie Greaves. He explains how, with dedication, one can gain up to 6% clubhead speed and 10 extra yards in a matter of weeks, which can lead to a two-shot handicap reduction.
Wrapping up, we take a look at optimizing long shots and club lengths, and explore how knowing your dispersion can help you minimize penalty situations.
About the Guest:
Lou Stagner is an Arccos Golf Data Insights Lead, Co-Host of the “Hack It Out Golf” podcast and one of the leading data research analysts on The PGA TOUR. A self-proclaimed “golf nut and data nerd”, Lou has become an influential figure in the golf data space by combining a lifelong passion for the game with his background as a business intelligence and analytics executive.
