23 Sep 2022Niclas Wisén - How The Military Train to Better Handle Pressure Situations00:58:26

“Stress is not just ok, stress is essential.”

This week on the OA Podcast, Patrick and Daniel are joined by Swedish Army Captain Niclas Wisén to speak about how breathing has become an essential part of his life both in and out of the military. A psychologist and captain in the Swedish Armed Forces with over 10 years’ experience, Niclas has been involved in the training and selection of new recruits for much of his time in the military. During this time, he has incorporated breathing as a way of improving performance and coping with stress. He outlines how things like Stress Inoculation Training (SIT) and various breathing techniques can help physically and psychologically in many facets of a soldier’s everyday life and during the rigors of military performance.

31 Jan 2023Dean Gladstone - How Breathing Changed My Life00:54:27

“It was pretty much the best and worst day of my life.”

On the latest episode of the Oxygen Advantage® podcast, Patrick is very happy to welcome breathwork colleague, OA Instructor, surfer and star of popular Australian reality show Bondi Beach, Mr. Dean ‘Deano’ Gladstone.

Admitting he shares a similar story to Patrick’s, Dean explains that he struggled with asthma from a young age, even being hospitalized at the age of nine. The only times he felt relief from symptoms was when he went swimming regularly. Any extended length of time away from the pool and Dean’s symptoms would return.

Dean had stopped swimming prior to being hospitalized and was sent back swimming by his doctors. Despite regular continuing issues with his asthma, Dean stayed extremely fit and reached an incredibly high level in swimming, reaching an Australian national ranking of 2 in the 400m swimming event at the age of 18.

But even at an admirable fitness level, Dean still struggled with his breathing. He was regularly ill and would often go on a course of antibiotics prior to a swimming event as he knew the high levels of stress and competition would negatively affect is health.

Becoming a plumber after school, Dean found that dust would regularly affect his breathing and coupled with his exercise, he suffered chronic fatigue. Around the same time, he discovered yoga which was his first foray into “regulation of the breath”.

His life took a massive turn when he was violently assaulted in an unprovoked attack in his 20’s where he received spinal damage and had his four front teeth knocked out. It is a day he describes as “pretty much the best and worst day of my life.”

The attack destroyed his health. It led to anxiety and post-traumatic distress, he started suffering skin irritation and was scratching himself to the point of bleeding at night. He needed to make a change so he and started looking at holistic alternatives. Since then Dean has not looked back and has gone on to become a yoga instructor, Buteyko instructor and Oxygen Advantage® instructor.

He now works with people from all walks of life from children needing to improve their asthma to high level athletes looking for that 1% improvement. Thanks to Dean, this is a very interesting podcast with an enlightening life story that you should enjoy.

07 Mar 2023Ben Coomber - Achieving High Performance00:53:49

“Block out negativity… take control and then work towards the goal.”

On this week’s edition of The Oxygen Advantage® Podcast, Patrick is joined by high performance coach, businessman and author, Ben Coomber.

Both as a High Performance Coach and in his own life, Ben specializes in breaking down and examining the parts of our lives that may be stopping us form achieving high performance. He says it’s starts with making changes that will get us the “big wins”, i.e. things we can change that will quickly bring improvements, like a good night’s sleep.

The people Ben coaches, score different parts of their life out of 10, like diet, stress, sleep and even relationships. By looking at the lowest scores first, Ben says that’s how you can identify your “big wins”.

The things we can change or adapt to improve our overall health will differ from person to person. Job, stress, diet, relationships and more can all be negatives for our health. By taking a look at how we spend the time each day is how we can make positive changes and use our time better, and according to Ben, sleep is one of the best ways we can make quick improvements to our performance.

Many of the tools Ben uses to improve his clients’ health and performance can all be found in his book How to Live an Awesome Life. Ben’s other books How to Be an Awesome Personal Trainer and Sports Nutrition in Practice are also available for purchase.

This is a very entertaining and informative conversation about finding ways to use our time better and avoiding the many unhealthy traps of modern life, like poor sleep, phone addiction and stress.

Discover more about Ben on his website bencoomber.com or search Ben Coomber on your preferred social platform.

28 Feb 2023Dermot Whelan - Mindfulness and Me01:10:24

“Everything is vying for our attention… and we need to take the power back.”

On the latest episode of the Oxygen Advantage podcast, Patrick is joined by TV host, radio personality, comedian, author, and mindfulness teacher, Dermot Whelan.

A well-known celebrity in his native Ireland where he has been a permanent fixture of television and radio for well over a decade, Dermot experienced many struggles with his mental health over the years. Even when his career was flying high, Dermot was still experiencing mental health issues that were starting to eat away at him.

It all came to a head about 15 years ago when he experienced a panic attack on the way to the Cat Laughs comedy festival in Kilkenny where he was performing. He was driving and had to pull his car to the side of the road. He would eventually arrive at the festival in the back of an ambulance.

He says it wasn’t until he discovered mindfulness that he was able to start making really positive changes in his life. A neighbour introduced him to mindfulness and he hasn’t looked back since.

From his status as a national celebrity Dermot has used his position to spread the word about mindfulness, even teaching live courses and writing his book ‘Mind Full’.

The book features easily accessible information about mental health and mindfulness while mixing in comedic elements. Comedy is something that comes naturally to Dermot and is something he was able to extend into his Mind Full tour which is currently ongoing.

This is an entertaining, practical and accessible podcast for anyone interested in mindfulness, breathing and improving mental health.

18 Aug 2023Iga Świątek and Mouth Taping for Athletes01:01:41

“There’s no point in trying to sprint if you can’t walk.”

In this surprise bonus episode of the Oxygen Advantage® podcast, Patrick McKeown is joined by podcast partner Daniel Pålsson and Ximena Beltrán García to discuss the recent news about Polish tennis ace Iga Swiatek.

The world number one tennis player received global media attention recently when she was filmed training for the National Bank Open in Montreal with her mouth taped.

The pictures that circulated around the world reignited the discussion around nose breathing and using functional nasal breathing to

improve performance. As with all of these online discourses, a mixture of facts and fiction about nose breathing filtered through the media, so Patrick and his team are on hand to guide you through.

Ximena and Daniel are both Oxygen Advantage® instructors who specialize in training tennis players and both have years of experience making the OA method and functional breathing a part of their training regimes. Both are very experienced tennis players and coaches with Daniel a former tennis pro in his native Sweden.

Looking at the science of breathing, they discuss the possible reasons why Iga has chosen to use mouth taping and the many benefits that functional breath training can bring to her and all athletes. They discuss the frighteningly large proportion of professional athletes who have dysfunctional breathing and what they and any member of the public can do to start improving it.

This is a great episode if you are looking for insights into functional breathing for athletes, for reasons behind why the world number one taped her mouth during training and for explanations of the science behind why functional breathing methods such as those taught by the Oxygen Advantage® are hugely beneficial to their health, their mental and physical wellbeing and their performance.

07 Apr 2023Guided Breathing and Relaxation for Exam Preparation00:29:58

In our latest audio, Oxygen Advantage® founder and CEO Patrick McKeown leads you through guided breathing and relaxation to help prepare you for that all important test or examination.

Millions of us face standardized testing at a variety of times throughout our lives. Whether in school, college, or upskilling at work, the prospect of facing hours of questions designed to test our skill levels can be very daunting.

Going into examinations in a stressed state can make concentration very difficult and can have a negative effect on the final grade. Of course, going into exams tired and unfocused will also cause you to perform at a level below your best.

When the stress of a test or exam gets too much for us, we enter the body’s stressed ‘fight or flight’ response and lose our ability to function effectively. When we are too relaxed however, our responses are slower and we can lose focus and concentration; essential for successful exam results.

This 30-minute audio is designed to help ease those concerns, to help calm your body and mind and focus you for the task ahead.

Simply play the audio in the weeks leading up to and just before going into the examination. Let Patrick’s voice guide your breathing and set you up for a great test performance and an excellent grade.

21 Mar 2023Michael Italiano - Coaching the Racing Elite00:34:22

“A clear mind is what we want for optimal performance.”

On the latest edition of Season 3 of the Oxygen Advantage® podcast, Patrick McKeown is joined by Formula 1 performance coach Michael Italiano.

Michael, an already established performance coach, entered the sport of F1 after a call from old friend and fellow Australian, Daniel Ricardo, who Michael has known since he was 12. After five years with Daniel, Michael is now well established in F1 and is coaching AlphaTauri's Yuki Tsunoda this season.

Michael explains the huge amount of considerations that Formula 1 drivers have to deal with every time they sit behind the wheel of these impressive and powerful machines.

Factors like heat and G-forces can have a huge effect on drivers’ physical condition but also, when people start getting fatigued, cognitive function begins to decline. Mental strength and focus is essential for F1 drivers.

They have to be aware of race positioning, attacking or defending a position, the right way to enter each corner, fuel efficiency, tire wear and much more. All of this happens at an average speed of over 200 miles per hour and a top speed of over 230 mph.

If you follow Formula 1 racing, have watched the ‘Drive to Survive’ Netflix series or just want to know how tough things can be, both physically and mentally, at the apex of world motor sport, then this is the podcast for you.

13 Dec 2022Michael Boyle – Strength and Conditioning and How It Evolves00:56:36

“It’s athlete preparation… I’ve been doing this for 40 years and I’m still learning.”

This week on the Oxygen Advantage® Podcast, Patrick and Daniel are joined by lecturer, trainer, author and widely considered one of the foremost authorities on strength and conditioning, Michael Boyle.

Beginning his career in the early 80s, Mike struggled to find work full time in the new field of strength and conditioning and worked at the college level. He often offered his services for free and supported himself working in bars for the first 10 years of his career. He would go on the work with the Boston Bruins, the World Series winning Boston Red Sox, and the gold medal winning US Women’s Olympic Hockey Team.

Mike explains how strength and conditioning has evolved over the years. From originally being “the weights guy” he evolved the conditioning side and looked at preparation, healthy eating, core training and more.

Another challenge he faced was trying to change old school mentalities about preparation for athletic competition. Even facing resistance for pushing the now very common knowledge that a big part of preparation for an athlete was being healthy.

A continued evolution was what brought Mike to breathing. When he first heard the diaphragm described as a muscle and knowing that muscles can be trained, began bringing it into core training. Mike quickly learned that simply asking people to exhale to their maximum accessed the deep abdominal muscles including, the internal obliques and the transverse abdominis and could greatly benefit strength and conditioning core training.

This is a very interesting conversation with someone at the top of their field.

More on Michael Boyle can be found on his website bodybyboyle.com.

28 Mar 2023David 'Jacko' Jackson - Brain Injury & Breathing00:59:23

“[My] brain has healed itself and I feel… it’s because of the retraining of the breath.”

On the latest episode of the Oxygen Advantage® Podcast, Patrick McKeown is joined by former rugby player, OA Master Instructor and someone with first-hand experience of concussion and brain injury, David ‘Jacko’ Jackson.

David is a former rugby union player who spent his professional career playing for his hometown club of Nottingham RFC. It was the consequences of the injuries he experienced during his career that started David on the path to breathwork.

David’s first significant concussion occurred at the age of 16, playing rugby during an England schoolboys trial. He would be hospitalized from is injury but at the time, was not removed from the pitch.

He would then have what he describes as “a series of head injuries and concussions” throughout the next 15-years of his rugby career. That career ended when one light tackle in training changed his life. The impact, though innocuous when compared to the type of hits rugby players are used to, caused him to go into seizures on the pitch and would lead to a bleed on his brain.

David explains how he discovered Patrick’s work around 2017 while looking into the effects of concussion and learned how breathing can be used to increase blood flow to the brain. He has not looked back since and is now an Oxygen Advantage® Master Instructor who works with former rugby players and other people dealing with traumatic brain injuries.

This is a very interesting and enlightening conversation about concussion and traumatic brain injury. It is well worth a look for anyone interested in seeing how breathing can be used to improve brain health and increase quality of life.

13 Dec 2022Susanna Søberg – Chilling Ourselves to Boost Metabolism00:57:39

“You cannot study this without trying, so you have to get into the water.”

On this edition of the Oxygen Advantage® Podcast, Patrick and Daniel are joined by research scientist, cold immersion specialist and author of new book ‘Winter Swimming: The Nordic Way Towards a Healthier and Happier Life’, Dr. Susanna Søberg PhD.

A scientific researcher, Susanna’s studies originally focused on metabolism and more specifically, brown fat, the body’s healthy fat that helps regulate temperature. As part of the research she started looking at how the brown fat reacts to various cold situations such as cold air on your skin or entering a cold room. This eventually led her to look at cold water immersion and ice swimming, a well-known pastime pursuit in her own home of Denmark and throughout Scandinavia.

After facing her fear and entering the water, Susanna soon learned the importance of breathing when putting the body into such an extreme environment. She says that there are big health advantages to cold water immersion and that everyone taking part could benefit greatly from learning to breathe calmly and lightly during cold water immersion.

Susanna takes Patrick and Daniel through how cold temperatures affect people differently, how important controlling your breathing is in dealing with the cold, how commonly cold water immersion is used around the world for health benefits and much more.

Winter Swimming: The Nordic Way Towards a Healthier and Happier Life is available from all good book stores.

An avid sportsman throughout his life, Dr. Laursen describes himself as a “failed athlete” who had taken a deep interest in sports from an early age. He was able to leverage that love of sports into his successful career in medicine and sports science, specialising in High Intensity Training for his PHD.

While in a professor at Edith Cowen University in Perth, Australia, he met and carried out many clinical studies on Interval Training with his long term colleague Martin Buchheit. Following the successful publication of many papers and a large review of their work they co-wrote the very successful ‘Science and Application of High Intensity Interval Training’.

Dr. Laursen outlines some of the reasoning and methods behind his research and explains how he has started to put more of a focus in his work on breathing to see if performance can be improved at high intensity through targeting and conditioning the respiratory muscles.

“When the person’s mouth is open, their ability to digest life significantly reduces.”

On the latest episode of the Oxygen Advantage podcast, Patrick is joined by speaker, coach and renowned dental expert Dr. Sherry Sami.

She is a dual specialist in pediatric dentistry and orthodontics with a wide interest in the whole picture of physical and mental health.

13 Oct 2023Breathing in the Corporate World01:03:34

“If [companies] implement stress management… magical things can happen.”

Welcome back to the Oxygen Advantage® podcast. In the latest episode Patrick is joined by OA Master Instructor Lars Christian Larssen to speak about teaching breathing in the corporate environment and innovation in the ways in which companies deal with the stress and anxieties of their employees.

Lars is from Norway, just an hour outside Oslo and has spent years teaching functional breathing training in the corporate environment. He found his way to breathing when he was dealing with severe work stresses when he worked for a large Norwegian media company. Conflicts at work and the anxiety it caused was eating him up inside, disturbing his sleep and making his life incredibly stressful.

Working under a “great boss”, Lars’ company looked at Google’s famous 20% Innovation time, where engineers are encouraged to take 20% of their week to work on new projects that interest them. They allowed workers to spend 10% of their time on passion projects. Lars wanted to develop strategies for stress management and performance management in the workplace and the freedom at work allowed him to do this.

This is a great podcast for those interested in ways to combat stress in the working environment or innovative ways to look at human resource management in the modern workplace.

Lars can be reached via his Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/larssen1/.

Dr. George Dallam holds the rank of Distinguished Professor in the School of Health Science and Human Movement at Colorado State University – Pueblo (CSUP). He has taught a wide variety of classes in exercise physiology, research and statistics, behaviour facilitation, sport psychology, kinesiology, biomechanics, management, exercise assessment and prescription, swimming, running and triathlon. He is past chair and an ongoing member of the CSUP Institutional Review Board, as well as being the longtime chair of the CSUP Faculty Compensation Committee.    He is also the former inaugural National Teams Coach for USA Triathlon and continued to work for many years with elite U.S. triathletes as a coach, advisor and consultant while at CSUP. Athletes coached directly by Dr. Dallam have included National Elite and Age Group Champions, Olympians, Pan American Games Medalists, World Age Group Champions and the top ranked male triathlete in the world in 2005-2006, Hunter Kemper.

Dr. Dallam has been involved in numerous research studies and the publication of their results at both CSUP and the USOC examining various aspects of triathlon performance and training, diabetes risk factor modification, and the effects of functional movement improvement on running . His primary research interest recently is focused on the capability of human beings to adapt to nasal only breathing during exercise as a way to improve both health and performance.

In this fascinating episode, George Dallam takes us on a journey that began in 2005, when frequent health issues pushed him to explore the unexpected benefits of nasal breathing. Over the course of six months, George transitioned to nasal breathing during exercise, resulting in remarkable improvements in his cycling and running performance, as well as a significant reduction in sinus infections.

Join us as George shares insights from groundbreaking studies that reveal how nasal breathing can reduce VO2 max by 10%, yet increase efficiency by helping athletes achieve 85% of their VO2 max at a lower ventilation rate. He also dives deep into the physiological benefits, from improved blood flow and cognitive function to reducing cardiac fibrosis.

But the path isn’t always smooth—George discusses the challenges athletes face when making the switch from mouth breathing to nasal breathing, and why gradual adaptation is key to avoiding hypoxia.

Whether you're an athlete or just curious about how breathing affects your health, this episode will leave you inspired to try nasal breathing for yourself. Plus, George shares practical tips like using nasal dilators and taping for better adherence.

Tune in to discover how something as simple as breathing through your nose could transform your performance and well-being!

25 Jul 2023Gerry Hussey - Forget the Result, Focus on the Process00:53:57

“Food can be your greatest medicine or your slowest poison.”

For the opening episode of Season 4 of the Oxygen Advantage® podcast, Patrick welcomes writer, speaker and ‘The Soul Coach’ himself, Gerry Hussey.

Originally from Galway in Ireland and based in Dublin, Gerry has built a strong reputation for himself over the past few decades from his origins in sport psychology to his current work, spreading the word on how we can improve our individual health when we start looking inwards.

Author of books including ‘Awaken the Power Within’ and his new book, ‘The Freedom Within’, Gerry looks at ‘the brain, the gut and the heart’ when considering the issues that may be negatively affecting our mental and physical health.

With the brain we can overthink things, we can have a negative outlook or we can be shaped by the experiences, traumas or unresolved emotions of our past. With the gut, quite simply, we need to eat a healthy and balanced diet and really focus on what we put in our bodies as it can negatively affect our heads and our hearts.

As Gerry says, “What shows up in your emotions, shows up in your immune system, in your hormonal system and in your nervous system… The right person, with the right process, never has to worry about the outcome.”

12 Sep 2023In Conversation with a Boxing World Champion00:50:34

“In Belfast, there’s a boxing club on almost every corner… I just wanted to be like my older brothers.”

In this week’s edition of the Oxygen Advantage® podcast Patrick is delighted to welcome Irish hero, Olympic medalist and multiple time World Boxing Champion at amateur and professional level, Michael Conlan.

The Belfast native is a household name in Ireland after his medal-winning success at the London Olympics in 2012 and also for being the first Irishman to secure a boxing world championship at amateur level when he won the AIBA (Amateur International Boxing Association) bantamweight title in Doha, Qatar in 2015.

He speaks to Patrick about his life growing up, the support of his family, his boxing career and the hard work he had to put in to get to such a high level. He talks about how growing up in Northern Ireland at the tail end of the troubles and the support of his family helped shape him as a boxer and helped instil a resilience in him that remains to this day.

It is a resilience that was recognized on the world’s stage when he spoke out about the high levels of corruption in the amateur boxing world following a decision against him at the 2016 Olympics in a fight he clearly won.

This is a great sit down with a dedicated and talented athlete who speaks openly and honestly about his life and career. It is an informative and entertaining listen for anyone interested in the highs and lows of life as one of the best athletes in their field.

29 Aug 2023Breathing for Women: A Doctor’s Breathing Journey01:06:21

“Breathing. We do it automatically, but that doesn’t mean it’s automatically efficient.”

On the latest episode of the Oxygen Advantage® podcast, Patrick is joined by General Practitioner and Breathing Therapist, Dr. Louise Oliver.

Having worked with women going through the menopause and contraception for over 20 years, Dr. Oliver is the perfect guest to talk about women’s breathing, the perimenopause and the menopause.

For over 20 years Dr. Oliver has been working with women on contraception and HRT. It was during this time that Dr. Oliver experimented with using breathing for pain relief. During this time, she had a profound moment. When working with one patent, she used breathing exercises to put her into an incredibly relaxed state but when she tried that with other patients, doing the same thing made them feel much worse.

This was when she realized how breathing can affect people differently and decided to train as a breathing practitioner. In doing so she found that the missing link was carbon dioxide sensitivity. It was then that she realized there was a whole spectrum of breathing that needed to be considered.

She has since set up her own breathing practice alongside her GP practice and has used this experience to train other doctors to look at people’s breathing as an indicator of other symptoms.

Anyone interested in the effects of menopause, the way symptoms can be mitigated with breathing therapy, and the medical professionals are should listen to this podcast.

21 Feb 2023Caroline McKenna - Mental Health, Breathing and A County Down Under00:56:16

“The sun will always rise again tomorrow and you’re not on your own.”

In this episode of the Oxygen Advantage® podcast Patrick is joined by Caroline McKenna, a mental health advocate, teacher, and host of the ‘A County Down Under’ podcast which she started during her time living in Australia.

Originally only visiting Australia for ‘a few months’, Caroline ended up staying seven years. It was during her time in Australia that Caroline saw the high standards of mental health awareness and positive steps taken to highlight and address it. Things like readily available counselling services and mind healthy activities like mindfulness coaching.

During the pandemic, Caroline started to galvanize her thoughts on what she wanted to change in her life. She had spent almost three years in lockdown, away from home like many other non-Australian nationals, so she made a 15-minute video explaining the difficulties that many ex-pats face being unable to return home.

The video was a huge hit and was the beginning of what became the ‘A County Down Under’ podcast. A very popular show focused on mental health and wellbeing which has appeared on top download lists in Ireland, the UK and Australia ever since.

At a similar time, Caroline also started Sunrise Socials as a means for ex-pats to meet up and watch the sunrise and look at the future with positivity. The first Sunrise Social took place in Sydney, there are now 35 communities worldwide.

Caroline speaks in honest terms about how repeated suicides impacted her community growing up and how she struggled to understand why someone would take their own life and how she herself decided to quit drinking alcohol due to its negative effects.

An advocate of ice baths, it was also during lockdown that Caroline was introduced to breathwork thanks to Ronan O’Brien of Breathwave Ireland and has not looked back. She now agrees with Patrick and wants to see breathwork training taught in schools.

This is a very entertaining and enlightening podcast on the importance of finding time for ourselves and time with our family and getting away from the distractions of work and the phone.

27 Sep 2022Lucas Rockwood - Hard Yoga equals Easy Life00:54:43

“When you understand the principles of what you’re actually doing with your nervous system, it’s just a lot more straightforward.”

This week on the OA Podcast, Patrick and Daniel speak with yoga master, TEDx Speaker, podcaster, writer, and entrepreneur extraordinaire Lucas Rockwood.

Lucas is the successful founder of YOGABODY and since the earliest days of his love affair with yoga he has made it his goal to find out the relationship between yoga and breathing and he admits, it has not been an easy road to walk.

Yoga was the saviour of Lucas who was a very unhealthy twenty something in 2002. He worked a job he hated, was abusing drugs and alcohol and only fuelled himself with quick and easy junk food. Something had to change, and for Lucas that change came after a challenging but rewarding yoga class.

Since then, he has travelled the world to work with master yogis and continues his journey to clearly define the breathing exercises for yoga. He notes that the main focus in yoga classes is on the poses and, while essential, this can often mean participants are lacking in the specifics of how to breathe for various postures.

It a goal of his to educate the yoga community about the importance of the specific breath for the right posture.

13 Dec 2022Mads Tömörkènyi – Becoming the Best Version of Ourselves00:58:25

“Breathing is 50% of movement. Movement is everything.”

On the latest edition of the Oxygen Advantage podcast, Patrick and Daniel are joined by Mads Tömörkènyi, Copenhagen-based author and scientific researcher of biomechanics, neurophysiology and anthropology.

Mads is the author of Human Mechanics: Unleashing the Potential of a Highly Advanced Species, where he points to four main pillars of health: nutrition, breathing, movement, and sleep. Blending history and scientific evidence, Human Mechanics aims to help us “experience first hand the incredible benefits of digging deep into your biological potential”.

With a background in sports science and physical training, Mads’ studies have given him a deep understanding of the important role that breathing plays when trying to get the best out of physical movement and training.

Mads points to the importance of using the diaphragm when breathing during exercise and physical movement. He notes that too much emphasis can be put on big belly breathing which uses abdominal muscles but not the diaphragm to the same degree.

He and Patrick agree that people put too much emphasis on “the six pack” as the sign of true fitness which is not the case. In fact, they note that too much emphasis on building abs, and therefore focusing on just one group of muscles, has a negative effect on the development of core strength.

Putting a focus on breathing during physical exertion is the safest and most efficient way to build abs without neglecting the development of essential muscles.

17 Jan 2023Niall Breslin – Don’t Suffer in Silence – Mindfulness & Mental Health00:50:37

“I was silently fighting this chronic panic disorder from the age of 13.”

On this week’s edition of the Oxygen Advantage® Podcast Patrick is joined, by musician, author, mindfulness therapist and mental health advocate, Niall ‘Bressie’ Breslin.

A former Westmeath Gaelic footballer and Leinster Rugby player, Niall is a well-known celebrity in his native Ireland where he rose to fame as front man for rock band The Blizzards and as a solo performer.

In more recent years, Niall has grown in prominence thanks to his work with mental health awareness and his part in founding mental health advocacy charity A Lust for Life where he currently serves as Creative Director.

Growing up in Ireland in the 90s, Niall would sometimes run afoul of the Christian Brothers teaching him in school and suffered beatings at their hands. Niall moved to Israel with his father, a UN representative, at 13 and suffered PTSD after experiencing the conflict going on there. It reached a point where he was experiencing 2-3 panic attacks per day.

Niall still captained his school football team and would go on to play U21 Gaelic football for his county and professional rugby for Leinster before embarking on his music career. In fact, exercising was the only time that Niall felt he could “breathe normally”.

Everything came to a head when he suffered a massive panic attack prior to an episode of Ireland’s The Voice where he was working as judge.

Since then, Niall has done “everything and anything” he can to communicate what he went through and help others to deal with similar problems.

On the latest episode of the Oxygen Advantage® podcast Patrick talks with former Hollyoaks star and current yogi, hypotherapist and life coach, Gemma Merna.

Despite enjoying a very successful eight-year career with popular TV soap Hollyoaks, Gemma Merna faced many issues with stress and anxiety from a young age that were only worsened when under the pressure of the bright lights of fame.

Towards the end of her time on the soap, personal loss and not dealing with the resulting trauma would lead Gemma to exiting the role.

However, her choice to leave would be the first of many steps on a journey of learning and self-improvement.

Finding comfort and even therapy in yoga practice, Gemma was able to start dealing with her anxieties and started making small steps to pursue a new career in health. Those steps included learning hypnotherapy, and of course, discovering the importance of breathing to help calm and focus the mind.

This self-improvement journey would eventually lead to Gemma establishing Mind and Wellness with a goal to “give individuals the tools to discover themselves again”. By learning to be patient with herself and by “retraining” her brain with positive improvements, hypnotherapy, breathing to down regulate and of course yoga, Gemma admits she is now living the life she wants to live.

This podcast is a personal and informative look, through the lens of Gemma’s experience, at how we can all better our circumstances if we take the pressure off ourselves and work to improve our physical and mental health.

11 Apr 2023Dr. Steven Lin - Nutrition and Dental Health00:51:17

“Why Are Kids' Teeth Decaying at the Rates They Are? I Wasn’t Convinced with the Answers.”

Does mouth breathing change your face? It certainly can. In the latest episode of the Oxygen Advantage® Podcast, Patrick McKeown speaks to Australian dentist, author and nutrition specialist, Dr. Steven Lin.

Dr. Lin is one of the leading voices in dentistry, calling for changes to our nutrition and breathing in a bid to prevent against a wide variety of ill effects such as crooked teeth, stunted facial development and narrow airways. A number of years ago during a break from dentistry, on a trip through Turkey, Dr. Lin discovered the 1939 book, Nutrition and Physical Degeneration by fellow dentist Weston A. Price.

Examining many traditional communities around the world, like islanders from the Outer Hebrides in Scotland, the book looked and how changes from ancestral diets of grains, fresh meat and vegetables to diets including refined sugar, preserves and chocolate lead to a rise in crooked teeth, receding jaws and other dental and facial development issues.

Having not previously considered the way nutrition could affect our physical development, Dr. Lin started investigating it himself. His research on nutrition and its effects on the development of our teeth, face, jaws and overall health, lead to the publication of his book The Dental Diet in 2018.

While Dr. Lin admits that much of the dental establishment has been slow to adopt preventative measures like nose breathing, he says the knowledge is out there. He notes that facial development was studied in dentistry in the 1800s but much of that was discarded at the turn of the 20th century. He also says that currently, the diagnostic systems are just not in place in dentistry, and that kind of change will take time, but is happening.

This episode of the podcast is hugely enlightening for those worried about things like preventing mouth breather face or for those interested in things like breathing for asthma, breathing for sleep apnea and the impact of mouth breathing on dental health.

14 Feb 2023Flow Research Collective - Achieving Flow States01:01:53

“Flow starts when you say yes to the fight.”

This week on the Oxygen Advantage® Podcast, Patrick McKeown and Daniel Pållson are joined by Rian Doris and Dr. Michael Mannino of Flow Research Collective, a team of doctors, scientists, athletes and entrepreneurs working to get the best out of human performance by researching the state of ‘flow’.

Flow is an optimal state of consciousness where you feel at your best and are able to perform at or near your optimum potential. It has been described as a state of rapt attention and total absorption. It is a state where your sense of time changes, your inner negative voice quiets and your self-consciousness decreases.

By reaching flow states we can perform at our best, whether in an athletic pursuit, during a presentation or performing creatively.

Rian and Michael explain the complexities of flow, how our brains and bodies change when in flow and how we can get the best from it. This is a very detailed and interesting podcast on what flow is, how it works and how we can teach ourselves breathing to better access flow states. 28 Mar 2025Breathing on the Ball: Inside the Mental Game with Jack McMillan02:05:09

In this podcast, Patrick McKeown sits down with Jack McMillan, a former professional footballer, Advanced Oxygen Advantage® Breathwork Instructor, and founder of Optima Performance. The discussion focuses on breathing techniques for elite athletes, the importance of breath training in sports performance, and how functional breathing can be a game-changer in both pre-performance preparation and in-game execution.

Jack shares his personal journey from football to breathwork, how he first discovered it through yoga, and how it transformed his pre-match anxiety and overall performance on the field. The conversation explores how breathing influences nervous system regulation, mental clarity, and recovery, and how professional athletes are beginning to integrate these techniques into their routines.

They dive into how athletes can optimize their breathing both in training and competition, how CO₂ tolerance and breath-hold training can boost endurance and decision-making, and why nasal breathing plays a crucial role in performance and recovery. They also highlight the importance of post-match recovery strategies and the connection between breathing, mental clarity, and sleep.

Whether you’re an athlete, coach, or breathwork enthusiast, this podcast offers practical takeaways and new ways to think about breathing — not as an afterthought, but as a foundation for high performance.

23 Sep 2022James Newbury - CrossFit01:09:18

“I love to work hard, but for me it was more about making sure I could fortify myself.”

In this week’s episode, Patrick and Daniel are joined by elite Australian CrossFit athlete and author James Newbury to discuss his life and career and the benefits that breathing techniques have provided him.

Four times named Australia’s fittest man, James first discovered breathing techniques in 2016 “passively” and after his first rookie year competing in CrossFit, he looked into breathing more deeply to improve his performance, endurance and recovery.

“And it just flourished from there,” he explains. He says his methods were questioned initially by fellow competitors when he would utilise breathing techniques prior to events but after his times improved and he moved up the rankings he says this way of thinking started to change.

James explains how he has managed to remain positive despite a massive setback which hit him following an excellent season in 2019. He outlines how during mountain bike training for an Iron Man triathlon, he crashed his bike into a tree and suffered a punctured lung, mild concussion and a broken back. He tells Patrick and Daniel how he dealt with this setback and how he was able to motivate his recovery through breathing and mental fortitude and actually take part in that Iron Man triathlon only five weeks later.
