66. Mauro Zappaterra on Mindfulness, Expanding Consciousness & the Mysticism of Cerebrospinal Fluid

Mauro Zappaterra, MD, PhD, earned his degrees from Harvard Medical School and specialises in physical medicine and rehabilitation, focusing on human performance, awareness, and pain reduction. Pra

ctising mindfulness since 1998, he has taught it to chronic pain patients since 2018. As Director of Multidisciplinary Care at Synovation Medical Group, he integrates new research on cerebrospinal fluid and pain management. Dr. Zappaterra has authored numerous scientific papers and books, including I Am, All One, All Love, and Close Your Eyes, What Do You See? co-written with his son, emphasising awareness and imagination. His alphabet book, A is for Awareness, and programs like Awakening Awareness reflect his dedication to mindfulness, healing, and expanding consciousness.

Mauro shares the story of his upbringing, and early curiosity in human development and the power of the mind. He speaks about his studies in molecular biology and dissatisfaction with the format of his learning thus leading him down the holistic path and Craniosacral therapy which informed his PhD in Cerebrospinal fluid. 

Giancarlo and Mauro discuss the mystical and scientific significance of cerebrospinal fluid as well as ways to tune into this fluid and space through breath and meditation.  Mauro shares his philosophy that by doing these practices, we understand who we truly are, and the connection with the totality of the universe.

65. Simeon Schnapper on Researching & Investing in Psychedelic & Alternative Medicines

We are delighted to host Simeon Schnapper on the Mangu.tv podcast series. 

Simeon's passion and expertise span over 30 years in the fields of research, philanthropy advocacy, policy, and criminal justice reform in the science of psychedelics. He provides valuable guidance to various organisations including nonprofit, psychedelic and impact start-ups, family offices as of states and several newly formed governments. He co-founded the GLS fund, groundbreaking venture capital in this field, and spearheaded the world's inaugural psychedelic investment summit at the start of the decade. Recipient of the MacArthur Foundation, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, he's an Aspen Institute fellow. While embracing a global outlook of impact and when not living on aeroplanes, visiting portfolio companies, he spends his time between Manhattan, Montenegro and Western Central Africa. 

Simeon speaks about his upbringing, his parent's work with Peacecore, his childhood in Western Samoa, and later in Chicago. He talks about his teen years, his curiosity in spiritual practices and altered states, as well as his time in Ghana. Simeon discusses his role in opening the first psychedelic art gallery and medical marijuana dispensary in California, and subsequent involvement in alternative medicine, as well as investing in philanthropic and holistic endeavours. 

Giancarlo and Simeon discuss the medicalisation of Psychedelics such as Psylocibiin and MDMA as well as the complexities of their use in a Western medicinal context, ways to manage approved drug use to minimalise their abuse as well as informing the global perspective on Psychedelics as medicine.

56. Jack Allocca on Altered States of Consciousness, Psychedelic Science and Philosophy of Mind

We are excited to host Dr. Jack Allocca on this episode of the Mangu.tv podcast series. 

Jack is a research fellow at the University of Melbourne, studying altered states of consciousness using pharmacology, neuroimaging, and computational neuroscience. He founded Somnivore Pty Ltd, an AI data analytics company serving neuroscience laboratories. His research spans neuropharmacology, psychedelic science, sleep science, and consciousness research in wild species like bears, elephants and birds. Allocca has personally tested over 100 psychotropic substances and explored over 80 countries, speaking and consulting on psychedelic science, philosophy of mind, biohacking, AI, and their societal implications. His work has been featured in various media outlets, including print, video, and radio.

Jack discusses his upbringing in Italy and the cathartic moment that led him to a lifetime of inquiry into altered states of consciousness, neuroscience and psychotropic substances. He hares stories of extended travel and research during his studies, and investigation into the human psyche - experimenting with everything from meditation and psychedelics to extreme diets, religion and joining the sex industry  - each becoming integral to his PhD and future career. 

Giancarlo and Jack discuss collective consciousness and whether the world can ever really heal, looking at love, collective development and awareness vs. technology and war.

55. Betony Vernon on Spirituality, Sex, Sensuality and the Erotic Body Realm

Daring, provocative and boundary-defying, Betony Vernon is an American-born designer, sexual anthropologist and author. Her aesthetic is formed by her explorations in spirituality, sex, sensuality and the erotic body realm. The development of her work is multidisciplinary, spanning sessions of practical teaching and curative sharing. The writing of her book The Boudoir Bible is currently translated into nine languages and the design of sublime objects, jewels, sculptures, furniture, objects, as well as happenings. In 2024 Betony will open the doors to a new experiential space in Italy, situated in an ancient building, restoration and preservation have been priorities for the past two years, most importantly, Betony has taken action in saving a piece of land around, which is building a community to preserve the negative impact of ecocide. Betony believes that to restore the soil is to restore the soul.  

Betony discusses her upbringing in the post-punk 1980s, her interest in philosophy and erotic literature and her life between Italy, Paris and London. She speaks about sexual liberation, and her work with jewellery, erotica and bondage, which was not easily accepted by mainstream outlets. 

Giancarlo and Betony discuss the power of play, and radical trust as a way to transcendence. Betony talks about shibari, bondage, the power of sex, and reasons it's so feared, as well as her cover shoots for The New York Times and work with sexual liberation and healing trauma.

54. Batuhan Bintas on Psychedelics, AI and Educating the Future Generation

With a passion for educating the upcoming generations, Batuhan has been a technology enthusiast since his first meeting with computers at age three. He is an Animator and a full-stack Extended Reality (XR) developer with a deep understanding of Artificial Intelligence technologies. Batuhan is the founder and CEO of Imaginatrix Studios; a London/Istanbul-based XR studio that designs Augmented, Mixed and Virtual Reality technologies. Batuhan is a keynote speaker and has spoken at renowned events such as Boom Festival, Ozora Festival, Breaking Convention, and Occulture. Also, a psychedelic science enthusiast and a cyberdelics creator; Batuhan’s project Cyber Mushroom is designed to give a psychedelic experience through the power of Extended Reality and Artificial Intelligence. Batuhan believes that we live in a time where science fiction is becoming science fact. He elevates upcoming generations and teaches about the responsible use and innovation of technology; so we collectively write beautiful science fiction where we wish to live.

Batuhan speaks about his upbringing, the influence of his Sufi grandmother and his early understanding of different dimensions. He talks about visa difficulties whilst studying abroad and how this led him to study online. This later led to his current projects, and work with the UN, bringing virtual reality to refugee children, offering insight into life outside of refugee camps.

Batahan and Giancarlo discuss educating future generations about sacred sexuality, psychedelics and AI as a tool to support growth and education.

53. Robert Mitchell on Psychedelics, Astrology and Cosmic Consciousness

We are delighted to host Robert Mitchell for episode 53 of the Mangu.tv podcast series. 

Robert is a religious and Jungian scholar, a Western psychedelic lineage holder, an astrologer, a practical mystic, a podcaster, and a writer.  He received an undergraduate degree in Religious Studies from Syracuse University, and a Master in Counseling from The California Institute of Integral Studies. For thirty years, he has worked worldwide to strengthen people’s relationship with the transpersonal intelligence that animates their lives. He uses tools of Western esoterica that include astrology, psychedelics, meditation and dreaming.  His specific interest is working with the unique structure of the consciousness of the individual, while demythologizing the psychedelic experience, removing the need to fetishize it or make it something exotic. His motto is: “People don’t need to use more Paychedelics, they need to be more Psychedelic.”

Robert speaks about his upbringing in Los Angeles, where his parents were part of the bohemian, creative scene, and how the sudden loss of his father, at age 16, impacted him. He talks about his education, with various teachers from Jung to Stan Grof, Agehananda Bharati, Ram Dass and more.

Giancarlo and Robert discuss mystical experiences and the doors one can access with altered states. Robert discusses the overlap in religion and astrology and his work using the intelligence of astrology to understand timings and cosmic consciousness. He shares a few profound case studies and speaks about the occasionally unrecognised value of astrology.

52. Alnoor Ladha on Anarchism, Mysticism and Post-Capitalist Community

Alnoor’s work focuses on the intersection of political organizing, systems thinking, structural change, inner/outer mirroring and narrative work. Alnoor comes from a Sufi lineage and writes about the crossroads of politics and spirituality in troubled times. His work has been published in Al Jazeera, The Guardian, Truthout, Fast Company, Kosmos Journal, New Internationalist, and the Huffington Post among others. He is a board member of Culture Hack Labs, a cooperatively run advisory for social movements. He is currently the co-director of the Transition Resource Circle and co-author of Post Capitalist Philanthropy: Healing Wealth in the Time of Collapse. He is also a co-founder and steward of Tierra Valiente, a post-capitalist experiment in the northern jungle of Costa Rica. 

Alnoor shares his story, growing up in a Sufi tradition where spirituality and meditation were central to his worldview.  He became interested in Marxism but as his political thinking developed he realised he was more of an Anarchist, he spent the last 15+ years researching and writing about the intersection between anarchism and mysticism.

Alnoor discusses life in community in Costa Rica. He speaks about giving back, privilege and the need for deep internal work whilst simultaneously applying that work to the world through the lens of service.

51. Tanya Kazeminy on sexual evolution and teaching self-love

We are excited to host Tanya Kazeminy for this episode of the Mangu.tv podcast series. 

Tanya is a teacher, writer and speaker who seeks to heal and explore sexuality, ‘our most powerful source of love, purpose and our true life force’. Born in London, she grew up between Minnesota and Tehran, and then back to London as a young adult. Tanya has been practising non-self abandonment since 1999 and devoted her life to (teaching) Love, she studied and taught self-love within the realm of pregnancy and Yoga, developed her practice with Meditation and in more recent years has been teaching Sexual Evolution. 

Giancarlo and Tanya discuss sexual ideologies, the importance of boundaries and modern-day sexual disconnect. Tanya talks about her teachings on sexual evolution based on authenticity, boundaries, self-love and worship.

50. Matteo Norzi on Psychosomatic Healing and The Shipibo Conibo Center

Matteo is an artist, designer, filmmaker and Indigenous rights activist. His explorative artistic practice took him through several extensive journeys along six continents. His art has been supported by institutions such as Art In General NY, Headlands Center for the Arts CA, Spinola-Banna Foundation for the Arts Italy. As part of the collaborative duo Isola & Norzi, he has exhibited internationally at venues such as Artists Space NY, GAM Turin, NMNM Monaco, David Roberts Art Foundation London, Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa, Venice, Museion Bozen and Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo. His critically acclaimed directorial debut, the feature film Icaros: A Vision, co-directed with Leonor Caraballo, premiered in competition at the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival. Bringing with him years of personal experience and extensive research on Amazonian history and culture, Matteo is co-founder and currently serving as the executive director of the Shipibo Conibo Center.


Matteo discusses his work with the Shipibo people and the value of psychosomatic healing. He talks about the use of sound and visual stimuli, and how they can be an important tool when diagnosing, transforming and connecting the mind and body.

 

Giancarlo and Matteo discuss the medicalisation of plant medicines and the problematic nature of plant without spirit as well as the notion of an individual rather than. collective experience. Matteo talks about the future of Shipibo artists and upcoming exhibitions around the globe.
