237 Healthy Aging Made Practical: Mind, Environment, Diet, Activity, Community with Scott Fulton

Saison 3 · Épisode 237

lundi 1 décembre 2025Durée 41:46

In Episode 237, in conversation with Dr. Gillian Lockitch, Scott Fulton reframes "successful aging" as more years, more moments, more money. He unpacks his MEDAC model—Mind, Environment, Diet, Activity, Community—and shows how small, practical tweaks compound: design homes for longevity, manage toxin exposure sensibly, eat for quality/variety/fiber, move all day (not just "exercise"), train balance, and build supportive community. They also explore simple ways to measure what matters and why stepping outside your comfort zone is a powerful aging tool.
Scott Fulton is a longevity educator and positive-aging innovator whose work sits at the intersection of health and housing. He teaches adult learners about healthspan and aging (Northwestern, UVA, University of Delaware), created the MEDAC system (Mind, Environment, Diet, Activity, Community), is a member of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine and the True Health Initiative Council, and served as President of the National Aging in Place Council. He and his wife live in Charlottesville, VA, in a demonstration home designed for optimal aging.

Timeline:

00:00 – 03:20 | Why "Wealthspan" now
Gillian's introduction: aging is inevitable, poor health isn't. Scott's thesis: extend health, life, and financial security—so you can collect more meaningful moments.

03:21 – 09:58 | Designing a home that ages with you
One-step entries, wider doors, "free-flow" layouts, smart use of terrain. Beauty + function beats "clinical" design and prevents future injuries/barriers.

09:59 – 18:13 | From big systems to positive aging, Scott's career pivot: apply systems thinking to aging. Against siloed care; for measurable, holistic balance (homeostasis) and innovation that actually changes outcomes.

18:14 – 26:59 | MEDAC: Mind & Environment
Stay curious; protect cognition. Shape two environments: your home and your exposures. You can't avoid toxins entirely—reduce risk and diversify behaviors.

27:00 – 31:53 | MEDAC: Diet & Activity
Start with quality, add variety, and count fiber. Activity ≠ just workouts: build cardio, strength, balance, and move through the day to fight sedentariness.

31:54 – 40:52 | MEDAC: Community + Resilience & the "one bold thing" rule
Social connection protects brain and practical living. Gillian and Scott on mindset, brain training, and choosing something outside your comfort zone to spark growth.

236 Bamboozled by "Evidence": Go Beyond Guidelines, Read the Studies and Question Dogma with Dr. Joseph Jacko

Saison 3 · Épisode 236

lundi 24 novembre 2025Durée 41:11

Are we being bamboozled by "evidence"?  In episode 236 of Growing Older Living Younger, Dr. Joseph Jacko explains how pharmaceutic and other corporate funding skews what we are told, why absolute risk matters more than splashy headline statistics, and how a deeper understanding of hormones and our metabolism, the microbiome –brain connection, and regenerative tools can help you build real health and extend your healthspan,—not just live with and manage disease. We pull back the curtain on how corporate interests and publication bias can distort medical "evidence," why relative risk often misleads patients and clinicians, and what it really takes to build health rather than simply manage disease. We cover functional and regenerative approaches, hormone optimization, the gut microbiome, the limits of mega-studies vs "N of 1," and why the basics—eat, move, think, connect are still winning strategies. We also touch on hot-button topics from COVID-era data framing to statins, dementia risk signals, and why dancing may be gold for the brain.

Dr. Joe Jacko is a physician specializing in internal medicine, sports and regenerative medicine, preventive medicine, and longevity science.  He earned his BA in Biology from Wittenberg University and his MD from The Ohio State University College of Medicine, followed by an Internal Medicine Residency at Mount Carmel Medical Center and a Sports Medicine Fellowship at the Hughston Orthopaedic Clinic.

Time Line:

 00:00 – 04:00 — Why "live younger, longer" matters
Dr. Jacko's pivot from guideline-driven sick care to pursuing optimal function and prevention.
Setting the stage: curiosity, critical thinking, and personal responsibility in health.

04:00 – 12:00 — Systems, incentives, and the evidence we see
How funding, training, and time pressure shape medical guidelines and clinical habits.
Practical tip: don't outsource thinking—ask what the recommendation is optimized for.

12:00 – 20:00 — Risk stats & research reality checks
Relative vs absolute risk, publication bias, and why splashy headlines often mislead.
Nutrition mega-studies, recall bias, and learning to read beyond the abstract.

20:00 – 28:00 — The longevity stack: basics that win
Protein-forward nutrition; strength, cardio, balance/flexibility; connection and joy.
Regenerative options and movement medicine for bones, brain, and metabolic health.

28:00 – 35:00 — Meds, hormones, and the gut–brain axis
Considering downstream effects (e.g., pathway blocking) and personalizing hormone care.
Microbiome testing, pH context, and using "N of 1" data to tailor interventions.

35:00 – 40:00 — Action steps & closing takeaways
Five habits: stay curious, verify sources, seek second opinions, and think in absolutes.

04: Sally K. Norton: Beware of the Toxins in Your "Superfoods"

Saison 1 · Épisode 4

jeudi 9 octobre 2025Durée 39:55

In today's conversation, I speak with Sally Norton,  a nutritionist with a unique specialty— warning us that "healthy" eating, and so-called superfoods, can make us sick.  Like most of us, I grew up with, and have an ingrained belief, that fruits and vegetables are good and essential to a healthy diet. Although I knew that plant toxins like phytates and oxalates in excess could cause mineral deficiencies, kidney stones and gout, I had not considered the health burden that may be imposed on individuals and society consuming a plant only diet. Popular foods such as spinach, sweet potatoes, chocolate, and almonds contain large amounts of naturally occurring toxins called oxalate.  Health research and educator, Sally K. Norton, MPH, studies the science of oxalates, and how our healthy diets may ironically be undermining our health.
Sally K. Norton, MPH, earned her nutrition degree from Cornell University. By sharing her own experience and knowledge of oxalates, she has helped many people improve their health and recover from serious illnesses, chronic pain, kidney problems, osteopenia, and chronic infections by making simple changes to their diet.
