Kylie Jenner’s Meta Glasses, The Surveillance State, Rebranded And Taylor Swift’s Wedding

lundi 29 juin 2026Durée 38:44

Hi friends,

Olivia Rodrigo launches an all-women festival, A24’s AI deal, and the rebranding of the surveillance state is here.

Reminder: you can join the Culture Club world on YouTube and Substack!

First up – we have some pop culture popcorn bits for you, including another nostalgic adaptation and more rumours about Taylor Swift's imminent wedding. Olivia Rodrigo is adding festival organiser to her resume with the announcement of the all-female festival, Daisy Chain Fields.

In film news, A24 and Google have struck an AI research partnership deal that will see the independent studio work to develop new AI-powered technologies for filmmakers. Cinephiles and Letterboxd-heads the globe over are not happy with the decision. Is this a step backward for the indie studio or a needed tool for research?

Meta has partnered with Kylie Jenner to release a line of AI-powered glasses. Named the Meta Starfire Glasses, Kylie Edition, the sunglasses can take photos and videos, play music, take calls and offer voice controls for you to go about your day hands-free. The accompanying marketing has been praised for its style and fashion, proving that all the surveillance state needed was a little rebrand. We discuss the ethical implications of these AI-powered sunglasses and the rise of Ring camera content online, including this Instagram post from style icon Alex Chung herself.

In recommendations, we have two TV series for you. Maggie recommends The Four Seasons, season 2 on Netflix, while Jas enjoyed Margo's Got Money Troubles on Apple TV.

Thank you for being here and for listening!!! We <3 you.

The Aestheticisation Of Loneliness, Grammys’ Asian Award & Girl Math Hits Retail

Épisode 230

lundi 22 juin 2026Durée 39:30

The Grammys' new controversial category, Girl Math hits the retail sector, and the problem with aestheticised loneliness influencers.

Reminder, we're on YouTube and SUBSTACK.

Hi friends! In this episode, we kick off with some celebrity pop culture bits, including a revelation from TikTok user Jessmess69 regarding Sarah Pidgeon and one former Culture Club Chats guest!

The Grammy Awards is adding five new categories: R&B collaboration or duo/group performance, best traditional pop vocal performance and best traditional folk album. But, the categories causing concern include best Asian pop music performance and best Latin song. Is this progress or a form of musical segregation?

Australian fashion brand, Lioness, has come under fire this week after its graphic tees were accused of sexist language. A t-shirt, which is being sold in Myer as well as in their online store for $29 features a slogan on the front that reads: “I’m too pretty to do math”. We break down our thoughts, including the new wave of bimbo-fication that's now being sold to women. We reference this opinion piece for the Sydney Morning Herald titled What a Degrading T-shirt: Girls Told They’re ‘Too Pretty To Do Math’ by educator Allan Dougan.

Next, have you noticed a certain type of social media content that’s focused on loneliness? Writer Rachel Pick wrote a piece for The Cut titled, “The Loneliness Influencers Inside The Luxurious Tedium Of “I Have No Friends” TikTok”. We discuss the influence of this type of content and if it's perpetuating or helping the loneliness crisis. We also read from Milk Fed by Caitlyn Richardson and her piece called Heidegger And The Illusion Of Aestheticized Loneliness.

In recommendations, Maggie watched the Australian horror movie, Leviticus, while Jas read and loved Strangers: A Memoir of Marriage by Belle Burden.

Pull Me Out Of This

Épisode 130

lundi 4 mars 2024Durée 39:00

Print is back, baby! To kick off this week's episode, we chat about the return of ELLE Magazine (in physical form) and what it means for the Australian media landscape.

We reference this piece by Alex Bruce-Smith for Pedestrian.TV in which Alex interviews the new ELLE editor, Grace O'Neill.

Next up, it's been a big week on the internet. From Bradley Cooper's unhinged commentary about his daughter to the AI fail at "Wonka's Chocolate Experience" in Glasgow, we discuss our thoughts on these incidents and what they say about where we're at right now.

In this segment, we reference the hottest interview on the planet this week, Vulture's chat with the viral "Oompa Loompa", Kirsty Paterson.

Now that the furore of the Australian-edition of the Eras Tour is over, a new phenomenon has hit our shores; Fred Again.

We discuss our thoughts on the British DJ and read from this review of Fred's surprise Sydney show by Jonathan Seidler for Esquire.

Finally, Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton hasn't been seen in public for over a month due to having what appears to be a pretty major surgery. We discuss the viral chit-chat around it and what we, as commonwealth subjects, expect from the royals.

In recommendations, Mags loved the Netflix show, One Day, while Jas enjoyed the 2017 movie, Molly's Game.

That's all folks!

Picture To Burn

Épisode 129

lundi 19 février 2024Durée 45:27

Happy Eras Tour week!

We start today's ep with a chat around the fact that the average Shein shopper is a 35-year-old woman (one who cares about sustainability). New York City-based designer Batsheva Hay exclusively cast women over the age of 40 during NYFW. We discuss why this is important and reference Put More Gray Hair on the Runways, You Cowards by Nicola Dall'asen for Allure.

Next, we recap our Eras Tour experience in Melbourne! This is followed by a chat about the Australian music industry in general and how regional festival Groovin The Moo has been cancelled for 2024 as they cite low ticket sales.

We reference this The Latest Victim of Everything-Is-Content? Festivals and Live Music article for Zee Feed by Simran Pasricha.

For recommendations, Jas loved The Price of Being ‘First’ I made modeling history. Then the internet made me wish I hadn’t by model Paloma Elsesser for The Cut.

Maggie gives a glowing recommendation for A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara

Janet Anderson is one of Australia’s most exciting, emerging actresses. She’s a recent graduate from NIDA and has just starred as the protagonist of Overflow, a powerful one-woman play about a trans woman in a club bathroom written by Travis Alabanza.

We sat down with Janet to discuss the powerful play, why trans existence is activism and cisgendered performative allyship.

Personal Style Won’t Save You

Épisode 127

lundi 29 janvier 2024Durée 43:22

We kick off this week's ep with some pop culture bitties; Sofia Richie Grainge is pregnant, Millie Bobby Brown launches a clothing line and our take on the Oscar snubs and noms.

The biggest story of the week was that Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig were snubbed by the academy for their work in Barbie. We discuss the ~discourse~ that surrounded this, including the online outrage. We reference 'The Barbie Snub Outrage Proves That When It Comes To Diversity, We’re Only Thinking Of White Women' by Alexander Koster for Refinery29 Australia

Next, why is TikTok shouting about the need to ditch trends altogether in favour of personal style? Is this mission misguided? We break down the takes from TikTok users Alina Timo and Mina Le as well as Flex Mami's latest video essay

For recommendations, Jas loved the 2023 remake of The Colour Purple, while Maggie read Love Stories by Trent Dalton.

Are We Over-Documenting Our Lives?

Épisode 126

lundi 22 janvier 2024Durée 50:05

Jas shares her big news, we recount our favourite awards season moments and do a quick vibe check for 2024.

Ariana Grande is making headlines for her media diss track 'Yes, And?'. We share our thoughts on the song, her 'lover' brand and chat through an Instagram post for The Swaddle titled, 'Is Homewrecking A Feminist Issue?'.

Next, there's something going on with Gen Alpha. The tweens are getting blasted online for partaking in skincare culture and trawling the aisles of Sephora. We chat about whether this is fair or not, who's responsible, and why late-stage capitalism is ruining childhoods. We reference this Allure article by Shelby Wax titled ‘Sephora Tweens Are Nothing New’ .

This convo rolls into another about why Gen Z is so afraid of ageing. We reference this BOF piece titled 'Gen-Z Is Already Worried About Looking Old' by Joan Kennedy and 'Why Is Gen Z So Scared Of Ageing?' by Kitty Lloyd for Fashion Journal.

In recommendation land, Maggie loved this newsletter by Freya India titled You Don't Need To Document Everything, while Jas devoured Poor Things by Alasdair Gray over the break.
