The End of Beyond Retirement?
Saison 5 · Épisode 264
dimanche 31 décembre 2023 • Durée 10:08
It's been a lot of fun these past few years, getting to know so many guests and hearing from multiple listeners with great thoughts about the show.
But the time has come to bring it to a close. Beyond Retirement was started to guide me and all my listeners on the journey to the next stage of life.
Well, I've made it! I'm at the gate to life "Beyond Retirement" and I have to say I'm excited about the future!
As I mention in this episode, I'm looking for suggestions for a title to the book I'm writing about life beyond retirement. If I use your suggestion, I'll send you a copy of the book!! You can send your suggestions here: [email protected] Enter as often as you like!
The possibilities I've thought of so far are:

The Journey to Retirement and Beyond
Saison 5 · Épisode 263
dimanche 24 décembre 2023 • Durée 08:52
"Beyond Retirement" is a fluid time encompassing all of your time after the flagpost of "retirement" has been passed. This podcast was developed to help listeners figure out their own journey by listening to the musings of the host and her guests as they travelled the road together.
There's no right or wrong journey. There are many detours and U-turns along the way. But in the end, it's the journey that really matters, isn't it. It's not the destination, but how you got there.
Ready For Life in a Foreign Country?
Saison 5 · Épisode 254
dimanche 22 octobre 2023 • Durée 08:56
Moving to a foreign country is a daunting undertaking, not one to be taken lightly. Do you speak the language? Are you ready for new customs and a new culture? Do you have a support system in place for when things get tough?
But it's not all doom & gloom - the opportunities to expand your knowledge of the world, to learn about life "somewhere else" ... that's an exciting draw for many.
The most important thing is to go into it with your eyes open. Be ready for things NOT to turn out as you planned; be ready to make changes as you go.

What Are Your Decisions Costing You?
Saison 4 · Épisode 163
dimanche 23 janvier 2022 • Durée 31:54
Laurence Kotlikoff is a renowned economist. He is a Professor of Economics at Boston University and the author of Money Magic -- an Economist's Secrets to More Money, Less Risk, and a Better Life.
Every choice we make costs us something; whether we acknowledge that cost or not is another matter. To properly plan for and navigate through our retirement, we have to be willing to assign the appropriate costs to all the choices we make.
If we decide to move to a less costly location, selling our home and uprooting our life, we'll save money on costs like utilities and property taxes, gas and food. But moving from our current home has a cost - what about the friends you leave behind? What about the familiarity with the neighbourhood and the surrounding towns? You have to start all over in the new location. There is a cost associated with that - the loss of familiarity and the need to take time to grow it again.
These costs are part of Laurence's book, Money Magic, which is available in stores and online now.
Please check out what Laurence has to offer on the many sites he's got:
Let's Chat about E.A.'s Ideas
Saison 4 · Épisode 162
dimanche 16 janvier 2022 • Durée 08:05
TRANSCRIPT:
I believe that heading into our Beyond Retirement phase of life is a great time to start taking a look at the people we’re hanging around with, if we haven’t done that already. EA said there are really 3 groups that a person can be categorized into based on their actions - there are Givers and there are Takers and as expected, they have different characteristics and they interact with us differently. The third group is made up of the Fence-Sitters, the folks who behave as either a Giver or a Taker, depending on whose company they’re in. This group is by far the largest of the three, as you can imagine.
I’ve been thinking about this a lot since our conversation, trying to figure out how to make it all make sense from a Beyond Retirement point of view. One of the ways EA defines the differences between Givers and Takers is in what they share with others. Givers bring wisdom, wealth and wellness to their relationships, while Takers bring defeatism, destruction and disruption to their relationships. Just going by those gifts (if you can call them that), I’d think it’s pretty easy to see that you’d be gaining a lot more from a relationship with a Giver than with a Taker, regardless of what phase of life you’re in. And as we travel the road Beyond Retirement, I think we’re going to find that wisdom, wealth and wellness are concepts that we want to pursue, whether or not we’ve done so up to this point, because these are the concepts that are going to take us forward and bring us closer to the joy and fulfilment that we’re looking for in this stage of life. So being able to figure out whether you’re chatting with a Giver or a Taker is a pretty important skill to acquire, I’d say.
The next thing EA mentioned is the idea that we should separate the people in our lives from their actions. Usually, we make a decision about a person based on what they say and do; we decide whether or not we like them because we either like or dislike their actions or words. But EA pointed out that we can like or love a person and not like or love what they’re doing. He called this discernment. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines discernment as “the quality of being able to grasp and comprehend what is obscure.” To grasp means to lay hold of with the mind and obscure means not known to most people; likely to be understood by only a few people; difficult or impossible to know completely and with certainty. So, the bottom line here is that developing the quality of discernment will probably set you apart from the majority of people and with this skill, you’ll be able to really see people for who they are and figure out whether they’re going to drain you or fill you up. And I think it’s safe to say that by the time we get to the stage of life we’re in, we aren’t looking for people to drain us!
Something I learned quite a while ago that’s stuck with me is the idea that you become the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with. The idea here is that you start to think like these people and act like these people, so consequently your choices are similar, and you will eventually rise or fall to the level that is about midline of that group. Depending on the group you’re in, you are someone’s number 1 or number 5 too, and they’ll be moving up or down to match where you are. All of this is quite subconscious, naturally, but the act of finding and maximizing the potential of your group should be no accident. Especially as you’re going into the retirement years. You’ll want to find people who share your interests and values, people who see things the way you do, because these are the people who are going to help you make the transition and create the best life you can have.
So how do you find these people? I think the first step is to start examining the people you spend time with now. What are they doing?

Saison 4 · Épisode 160
dimanche 2 janvier 2022 • Durée 06:40
It's hard to believe another year has come and gone, but it's now 2022 and along with the new year is a new season of Beyond Retirement!
This season, I'm going to try to focus on a few themes that I've come up with, in an attempt to keep on track with the idea of retirement preparation.
The themes for this season are PLANNING, FREEDOM, CONFIDENCE, and GENEROSITY. Each of the guests I speak with this season will have something to share with us relating to at least one of these themes.
I'm hoping to get some input from the audience as well - topics you'd like to hear about, people you think would be interesting to hear from, anything that might relate to making retirement great for you and others.
As always, you can reach me at [email protected] or by clicking any of the links on my website, https://www.beyondretirement.ca
Here's to you - thanks for listening!

Expressive meditation, described in my interview with Pragito Dove, can involve various forms of expression, including (but not limited to) laughing, humming, gibberish, and dancing. The key is to find the release that works best for you, to allow the release of pent-up emotions and the drop into awareness that follows.
