She holds a BFA in Theatre Performance, an MA in Communication, two postgraduate certificates in coaching and mentoring, and has worked with numerous Fortune 500 companies, International Associations, and individuals to get their brave on! Whether it be asking for a raise or promotion, nailing a presentation, or climbing Africa’s highest peak, her clients attribute her insights and inspiration to achieving what they never thought possible. She is also a mental health advocate, and the founder of Brave Beyond Diagnosis, a community dedicated to empowering women living with a mental health illness.

Carol is a published author, been featured in numerous magazines and podcasts, and was a returning guest expert on Rogers TV in Canada. Having lived in 16 countries, including Ashrams in India and vans in New Zealand, shaved her head, and bungee jumped in her birthday suit, Carol walks her talk and brings a global perspective to all she does. Multi-passionate, she’s also a volunteer counsellor, triathlete, and serious carpool karaoke-er!

Alice Min Soo Chun is the Co-founder and CEO of Solight Design, an author, TedX speaker, and female inventor of Solight-Design, SEEU95 and the SolarPuff, the world’s only self-inflatable, portable solar light. She has been featured on Tamron Hall, Good Morning America, MSNBC, Marie Claire’s Powertrip 2022, The Skimm, The Story Exchange, Fast Company, The New York Times, and more. Alice was nominated for USPTO Patents for Humanitarian Winner in 2018, and was nominated as Forbes 50 Over 50 recognizable women of 2022. Alice was also recently featured in the new Apple TV+ show ‘Gutsy’ hosted by Hillary and Chelsea Clinton, where Alice is highlighted alongside other female powerhouses such as Wanda Sykes, Amy Shumer, Megan Thee Stallion and others.

Her first invention, the SolarPuff, has impacted over 1 million people living in underserved regions worldwide. She has won numerous awards, including the US Patent Award for Humanity. Her inventions have been exhibited at MOMA, the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. In 2019, she was featured in Hillary Clinton’s book, “The Book of Gutsy Women”. She was honored as a Fast Company "World Changing Idea" in 2022 and recognized as a Marie Claire Power Trip 2022 Honoree for Most Influential Woman. Additionally, she was named a 2022 Forbes IMPACT honoree and was featured on Apple TV docuseries "GUTSY" Episode 6, alongside Hillary Clinton. She was also featured on ABC's Good Morning America during her recent mission to Ukraine.

In this episode titled "Moving Beyond Low Wage Work", we speak with Dr. Amanda Freeman about the upsetting trends being seen across North America for women and girls in low wage work, the cyclical setbacks that women face, and the ripple-effect that low wage work has on the advancement of girls and women generationally.

Amanda Freeman is a sociologist with research interests in poverty, social policy, qualitative methods, gender, family and education. She was the co-recipient of a Presidential Award for Early Career Scholars from the Russell Sage Foundation for 2017-2019. The award supported the production of her book manuscript for Getting Me Cheap: How low wage work traps women and girls in poverty, based on interview data that explores the experience of low-income parents pursuing higher education in the United States. Her current work explores work-family conflict for low-income mothers.

Amanda is also public sociologist who translates her research about the struggles of low-income families into news articles for media outlets including the Atlantic. In 2013, she received the Dentler Award from the public sociology section of the American Sociological Association (ASA) in recognition of “exceptional research and writing on the challenges facing low-income single mother-headed families and communication of research and its policy implications to a broader audience.”

At the University of Hartford, Professor Freeman teaches a variety of courses including Introduction to Sociology, Sociology of the Family, Social Welfare and Inequality. Amanda is also a board member of the National Center for Student Parent Programs.

Carly Shuler is a literacy expert leveraging the power of technology to advance reading skills for thousands of children across North America. Tanya Hayles founded Black Moms Connection (BMC) to support black moms dealing with universal parental issues along with specific topics black moms faces. Growing from 400 to 4,000 in 2 months, BMC provides a safe and supportive space for women across the world. FinLit U was developed from listening to the BMC community about financial literacy. FinLit U is now an 8-week course for community members that take away shame and trauma around finances and tackles subjects like credit, savings, investing, estate planning, entrepreneurship and more. Tanya also shares what it takes to do a Ted Talk and how perseverance is key.

Melanie is a mother and social impact connector with a decade of experience leveraging technology and cross-sector collaboration to address inequities. Her experiences range from leading the Canadian youth delegation for the G7 summit in France to being an Executive Director of an international children's foundation focused on education.

Today, Melanie leads social impact at Hoot Reading, an innovative social enterprise providing 1:1 reading lessons through their proprietary reading app. As the Director of Marketing and Social Impact and Executive Director of Hoot For All, she aims to improve equitable access to teachers and evidence-based reading programs for thousands of children across North America.

Outside of work, Melanie is a Board Director, avid volunteer, recent MBA and global fellow at the International Womens Forum. Most importantly, Melanie is a partner and mother to two young children who inspire her and motivate her each day.
