What if your postpartum wasn't the picture of straight-forward perfection?

Today, we welcome back Amy Leedham, aka @amy_the_punisher former pro trail runner, a sustainability consultant, who recently welcomed her 2nd child!

Amy joined us in Season 1 to talk about “The Postpartum Experience No One Wants to Read About but Should,” a piece she wrote in 2021 after the birth of her 1st child, highlighting the physical complications she faced attempting to return to trail running & activity.

We chat about the real challenges of pregnancy & postpartum recovery.

For over 5 years, Amy’s journey with two pregnancies & her return to running has been filled with ups, downs, & unexpected lessons.

Her story shows a very different side of postpartum recovery, far from the idealized images we often see.

We cover:
🔹Doing everything "right" yet still facing complications
🔹Recovering from post-birth injuries
🔹Building a supportive postpartum team
🔹Adding strength training to recovery
🔹Navigating shifts in identity as a mom

DR. JOCELYN FITZGERALD (REVISITED): Prolapse, Hormones & Urogynecology

Saison 1 · Épisode 44

vendredi 16 décembre 2022Durée 38:28

Send us a text

Today I speak with Dr. Jocelyn Fitzgerald, Assistant Professor Urogynecology and Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery, University of Pittsburgh. Recently, she had a tweet go viral talking about what a terrible job we do about educating women about their bodies and we unpack that in our conversation. We have a candid conversation about prolapse and why so many professionals think women shouldn’t be education about the possibilities BEFORE they are pregnant. Jocelyn talks about how patients can find the right type of provider to care for the symptoms they are experiencing. So much has changed over the years with how women get care for prolapse. We talk about those changes and current options that exist.

Jocelyn is committed to equity in women's health and supports the Magee Women’s Research Institute. If you’d like to donate to women's health and know that the funds are going directly into the hands of real scientists on a singular mission of bringing women's health to where men's health has been for 100 years, the Magee Women's Research Institute is doing just that.

We talk about:

-educating women about their bodies

-stages of pelvic floor prolapse

-the role age plays in experiencing prolapse

-the brain’s interpretation of pain and sensation

-when pessaries can help

-tailoring care for each patient

-outreach

RICH WILLY (REVISITED): Busting Running Myths with Rich Willy, PT, PhD

Saison 1 · Épisode 43

vendredi 9 décembre 2022Durée 49:11

Send us a text

Want the DL on running research?

Even when working with postpartum women, it's important to stay up to date on just plain, basic running research...& @montanarunninglab is one of my fave resources to stay up to date!

I invited Rich on to tackle some of the most common running myths I see in clinic, & unfortunately they're perpetuated by providers who aren't staying up with the evidence!

Let's be honest- lots of what we do as runners is based on what we hear & what our old high school XC running coach told us (fortunately I had a good one!!!!) Time to get up to date!

Dr. Rich Willy, has published over 50 peer-reviewed papers on two populations: endurance runners and tactical athletes & is an Associate Professor in the School of Physical Therapy, University of Montana (Missoula, MT, USA) & the Director of the Montana Running Lab. Dr. Willy has been a clinician for over 20 years specializing in the treatment of the injured runner.

Rich is a clinician-researcher-educator and uses his experience in all three rolls to further the mission of the Montana Running Lab: "Improving runner health via evidence based knowledge translation.” The labs utilizes Instagram to provide evidence-based materials that are equally helpful to clinicians as well as to runners of all levels.

Time to bust some myths!  MY FAVE!

We talk about:
🔹to stretch or not to stretch
🔹do we all really have weak glutes?
🔹don’t neglect the plantar flexors
🔹benefits of strength training
🔹reoccurrence of old injuries
🔹rethinking old ideas
🔹common clinician mistakes
🔹is there a “wrong” running form

SARA TANZA (REVISITED): Postpartum Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy

Saison 1 · Épisode 42

vendredi 2 décembre 2022Durée 48:43

Send us a text

As we end Season 1 of the podcast and head into the holiday season, I’d like to share the 5 most downloaded episodes of the podcast!

Here's #5, one of MY fave conversations this year that literally reminded me WHY I do what I do...

I have a professional crush & I'm not afraid to admit it.

I didn't realize how awesome it is to talk with another professional who independently comes to similar thoughts, ideas & inspirations until this recording with @pelvicpotential Dr. Sara Tanza.

Sara thinks differently & her pathway to working with runners in pelvic health was a winding road that helped shape why she thinks the way she does...& you won't expect it!

From suffering a running injury while competing on the Triathlon Team at University of California, Santa Barbara, to a neurorehabilitation residency to her own experiences as a mother runner & working with moms returning to sport, Sara's journey is like no other.

Dr. Sara & I share the sentiment that the best approach to pelvic health is wholistic. It requires a mash-up from everything we know as providers, from neurology & orthopedics to sports & pelvic health  as well as strength & conditioning.  We must think outside the box & thrive at critical thinking so our clients have the best chance of returning to the sports they love.  To fail to do so is no doing our job.

Sometimes that's as basic as helping moms embrace the simple things...including the 2 mile run.  Sara truly is a kindred spirit in maternal advocacy!

We have AN EPIC conversation from all things #momlife to our clinical thoughts & theories.  This is a MUST listen if your a PRO or a mom!

We talk about:
🔹the collision of pelvic floor health & sport
🔹expectations in childbirth can be a set up
🔹later onset postpartum symptoms
🔹pelvic floor warning lights
🔹dispelling shame around the pelvic floor
🔹changing the game in postpartum care

JAMES CLEAR: Atomic Habits for Parents (Season 1 Finale)

Saison 1 · Épisode 41

vendredi 25 novembre 2022Durée 46:07

Send us a text

Let's be honest, becoming a mom can throw your life-long habits in the trash, chew it up & spit it out...

I invited @jamesclear, habit expert &  author of the New York Times bestseller, Atomic Habits (currently #1) to help us dive into using habits as parents & moms. The book has sold over 8 million copies worldwide & has been translated into more than 50 languages.

I initially wanted to read the book with entrepreneurship in mind, & quickly realized that the guidance he wrote about surrounding habits was secretly speaking to every mom trying to find their identity as parents who want to take care of themselves physically, be there for their new family but get back to those things that made them feel like themselves.

Now a parent of 2 kids under 2,  James shares how to make the small changes that will transform your habits & deliver remarkable results.

I use the concepts in Atomic Habits on a daily basis with my clients!

James & I discuss the special challenges parents face building habits when there is no such thing as atypical day in parenthood. James shares ways to avoid common pitfalls people face when they are trying to establish a new habit, & so much more!

I am SO EXCITED for you to hear this interview, our podcast season finale!

We talk about:
🔹4 laws of building habits (these are clutch!)
🔹setting up your physical space to outsmart yourself
🔹embracing the season you’re in
🔹casting a vote for the type of person you are
🔹buying all the things for the thing v. doing the thing
🔹the 2 minute rule v. the perfect thing
🔹making the habit before you can build it
🔹finding balance in manageable bites (aka #momlife)

Saison 1 · Épisode 38

Send us a text

Today I speak with Margie Davenport, an Associate Professor, Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation in the University of Alberta. She also currently holds the Christenson Professorship in Active Healthy Living (2020-2025). As a former national team athlete, her recent work has examined elite sport participation during pregnancy, and return to sport following delivery. This line of research aims to develop more inclusive guidelines and policies for elite pregnant/postpartum athletes.

Her principal research interest is the investigation of maternal-fetal health outcomes, and an exploration of the preventative role of exercise and/or lifestyle interventions in the development of chronic disease.  She led the development of the SOGC/CSEP 2019 Canadian Guideline for Physical Activity throughout Pregnancy, and the upcoming Canadian Guideline for Postpartum Activity.

Margie gives us valuable insight into the most up to date research and where it’s pointing for the future!

We talk about:

-working with elite athletes during pregnancy and postpartum

-changes in recommendations over the years

-discussion of 2019 Canadian guidelines

-questionnaire for pregnancy women

-Olympic lifting during pregnancy

-clinicians and researchers collaborating

-social media and getting advice

-benefits of exercise during pregnancy

-pushing the boundaries
