04 Jun 2024The One Thing 97% of Expats Don't Do00:36:50

The number of U.S. expats living abroad is equivalent to being the 11th-largest state in the country. But barely 4% of us turn out to vote! Expats have the lowest voter turnout of any demographic in the United States - lower than high school students - and the same phenomena is probably happening in every country. If you're living outside of your home country right now (or planning to move abroad someday), this episode is a must-listen!

Tune in to hear from Nicole Greenfield, aka The Nomad Activist, a digital nomad and political activist who reached out to Kristin to speak about this topic and how we can change it.

Your vote matters. If every American expat voted, we would easily change the outcomes of current and future elections.

Vote absentee, vote early, and spread the word to your expat friends! Let’s make a change!

Special Offers:

Topics Discussed:

  • Why the US media doesn’t talk about expats not voting.
  • Why it’s still important to vote if you live abroad.
  • How politics impact travel and digital nomads.
  • The #1 easiest way to vote from abroad.
  • How digital nomads and expats can get involved and spread the word about voting.

Questions Answered:

  • What got you into political activism?
  • How do you practice activism as a full-time digital nomad?
  • Are American expats more liberal/Democrat or conservative/Republican?
  • What are the easiest ways to vote from abroad?
  • Can expats really sway election outcomes?
  • How do you balance being a traveler and digital nomad who also wants to make a difference in the US?

14 Jun 2022What To Do With Your Cell Phone When Traveling Internationally00:32:27
How can you use your phone in another country? What is the best way to make phone calls when abroad? Kristin answers listener questions about what to do with your cell phone when traveling. Plus, she answers questions about travel insurance and showing proof of return travel when traveling on a one-way ticket.

Questions Answered:

  • If you buy a SIM card in each country you travel to, does it mean that you never have a fixed number, in each destination it changes?

  • Do you have one phone for local calling, and another for international calls?
  • How can you use WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger if there's no Wi-Fi nearby?

  • When you buy a ticket to a destination but you don't know how long you have to stay, should you buy a one-way ticket, a round-trip ticket, or a one-way ticket to another destination?

  • Do you have to buy a round trip ticket entering and leaving the same country, or can you buy the entry ticket for one country and the exit ticket for another?

  • What type of travel insurance do you recommend? Is it better to use credit card insurance or buy a separate policy?

  • What's your opinion about digital nomad co-living and remote work communities like Remote Year and WiFi Tribe?

04 Aug 2020The Dangers of Work From Home Burnout and What to Do About It00:59:59

Have you felt more tired, stressed, negative, or ineffective since you started working remotely? If so, you may be burnt out. But you’re not alone.

Work-from-home burnout is quickly becoming the next societal health crisis. A reported 70% of Americans have experienced burnout since the pandemic started, up from 52% in May.

Rather than a medical condition, the World Health Organization (WHO) describes burnout as an “occupational phenomenon” or “syndrome” stemming from chronic, unaddressed work stress.

Working remotely offers the potential for more flexibility and work-life balance. Unfortunately, most people are replacing their daily commutes with more time at their desks.

I'm no doctor, but I've experienced burnout multiple times in my career - including last week - when I had to call 911 from my home.

Tune into today's episode to hear what happened and how you can avoid work-from-home burnout in the future.

More From Gavin:

"In Case We Haven’t Met, I’m Gavin Bell. I live and breath Facebook ads & funnels. Nothing beats helping entrepreneurs grow their businesses and generate revenue using my proven Facebook ad strategies. Last year my agency managed over $1m in client advertising spend. One client selling an online programme, generated over £650,000 in profit and one Scottish Football Club sold over £200,000 worth of season tickets with the strategies I teach on this site for free. I’m also a speaker and vlogger, so I don’t just talk the talk… I walk the walk. I speak on stages across the world and share my journey through my videos. In the past year, my videos have been seen by over 1.8 million people worldwide. It’s fair to say I know how to make Facebook work for you. I know how frustrating Facebook ads can be. The industry is littered with gurus making up numbers and selling you onto their high ticket programmes. It’s a minefield. Here’s hoping I can put an end to that."

23 Jun 2020Shark Attacks, Surf Photography, and World Travel with Surfing Magazine's Jimmy Wilson01:01:03

Jimmy “Jimmicane” Wilson, lives an astounding life. Since pursuing his dream of becoming a surf photographer at only 14 years old, my younger brother has traveled to some of the most remote and beautiful destinations on the planet - in the company of world-class surfers and swimsuit models, of course.

Jimmy is the former Photo Editor at Surfing Magazine, two-time Red Bull Illume Finalist, and is now the Online Content Editor and Social Media Coordinator for Vans Surf, working from home in Southern California. He has also worked at Eastern Surf Magazine, Transworld Surf, and has contributed to Surfer and Stab Magazines.

In this episode of Badass Digital Nomads, Jimmy shares what a day in the life of a surf photographer is like, including stories of multiple life-or-death experiences he has witnessed in his travels around the world (like the time he saw Mick Fanning get attacked by a shark in J-Bay, South Africa).

He shares how he funded his passion for surf photography by painting houses in Puerto Rico, and how to turn doing what you love into a long-term career while giving back to your community and the planet.

Jimmy also offers tips and advice on how to to reinvent yourself when circumstances force your industry to change (or go extinct).

In the Lightning Round, I ask about:

  • Which camera and equipment he uses
  • His favorite surf destination and non-surf destination
  • Cheap flight/travel hacks
  • Jet Lag tips
  • How to stay motivated working at home
  • A photography tip everyone should know
  • What his future goals include

I hope that this episode inspires you to carve your own path in the world and serves as a reminder for how much we can learn about ourselves and the world through travel!

09 Mar 2021What I Hate About Living Abroad00:41:10

In this podcast, I talk about what I hate (more like strongly dislike) about living abroad while sharing stories and examples of how moving to a foreign country has challenged me, caused me to miss out on important events back home, and has made me feel like an outsider. I speak on my experience struggling with cultural adaptations, dating, dealing with homesickness, and so much more.

In all honesty, living abroad isn’t always a magical, euphoric part of life. Traveling comes with many challenges and difficulties! There’s always going to be bumps in the roads, so it’s important to prepare for them if you can.

The insights and challenges I share with you in this podcast will help you in preparing to live abroad. Although there will be challenges to overcome, the positive aspects of moving to a foreign country greatly outweigh the negatives.

For the best things about living abroad, be sure to listen to Episode 97 of Badass Digital Nomads (if you haven’t already), where I explain everything I love about living abroad

TOPICS DISCUSSED/WHAT YOU’LL LEARN:

  • The worst thing about living abroad: Physical distance/separation from friends and family (homesickness)
  • FOMO and missing life events (birthdays, weddings, babies, etc.)
  • The hard work it takes to maintain relationships back home
  • Saying goodbye and making new friends that you won’t see for long
  • The difficulty of dating as an expat living abroad
  • The struggle of fitting in and feeling like an outsider
  • The possibility of experiencing discrimination or racism
  • Steep learning curves and frustrations that come with moving to new places
  • Getting ripped off, scammed, and stolen from frequently in foreign countries
  • Language barriers and communication difficulties
  • Being asked about politics and becoming the spokesperson for your country
  • Paying U.S. taxes when you’re not living in the U.S.
  • Confusing or losing your sense of self

16 Jul 2019Rolf Potts on 25 Years of Vagabonding Around the World00:31:49

Rolf Potts is an American author, essayist, screenwriter, and long-term traveler who is most known for his best-selling book, Vagabonding: An Uncommon Guide to the Art of Long-Term World Travel. Tim Ferriss has cited Vagabonding as the reason he decided to travel the world for a year in 2004-2005. As a result, Tim went on to write The Four-Hour Work Week, which is how I found out about Rolf’s books in 2007.

12 years later, I enrolled as a student at Rolf’s first Travel Memoir Workshop this summer (a new addition to his annual Paris Writing Workshop series). He sat down with me to talk about some of his biggest lessons and realizations from 25 years of traveling.

He also shares tips on:
• How to find adventure and avoid crowds during the social media era
• What your bucket list should really be used for
• Why you should consider hiring a guide when you travel (no matter how many countries you’ve been to)

20 years since writing Vagabonding, Rolf continues to inspire people with through his work. As technology and the ability to work remotely create unprecedented conditions for people to live a location-independent, digital nomad lifestyle, Rolf’s advice remains as relevant as ever. Enjoy!

08 Jun 2021Vagabonding with Rolf Potts (Interview from Paris, France)00:38:17

Reminisce with us as we replay this one-of-a-kind interview with Rolf Potts in Paris, France during his Travel Writing Workshop, where he and Kristin talk about some of his biggest lessons and realizations from 25 years of globetrotting.

Rolf Potts is an American author, essayist, screenwriter, and long-term traveler who is known for his best-selling book, Vagabonding: An Uncommon Guide to the Art of Long-Term World Travel. Tim Ferriss has cited Vagabonding as the reason he decided to travel the world for a year in 2004-2005. As a result, Tim went on to write The Four-Hour Work Week. Iconic, right?

In this episode, Kristin and Rolf talk about what it’s really like to be a long-term world traveler while sharing their candid thoughts on why people are so resistant to being nomadic, even though it’s in our DNA. Rolf shares words of wisdom on the downfalls of modern society and consumerism, what it was like to be a nomad in the 90s, and why “time wealth” is such an important concept in the 21st century.

This conversation is unlike any conversation Kristin has had with a fellow traveler. Rolf’s top travel tips and life lessons are sure to make you want to pack your bags and hit the road!

EPISODE 111 TOPICS DISCUSSED:

  • Expectations vs. Reality of travel.
  • Rolf experience doing van life before #vanlife.
  • The benefits of long-term travel and using your “time wealth” wisely.
  • Why you may be afraid to get out of the rat race and travel earlier in life.
  • The importance of constantly reassessing your motivations and desires in life.
  • Why you should consider hiring a travel guide (no matter how well-traveled you are).
  • How to avoid crowds and still have fun during the busy tourist season.
  • What your bucket list should really be used for.
  • Where Rolf’s inexpensive home base is located and what it’s like to come back home after traveling.

QUESTIONS ANSWERED:

  • Why do humans have the innate desire to travel?
  • With so much accessibility to travel and digital nomadism, why are people still resistant to it?
  • Do you still fit in here in the U.S. after so many years of traveling abroad?
  • Why should people travel slowly rather than having a busy itinerary?
  • Do you consider yourself a lifetime traveler?
  • What does the world not know about you?
  • And much more!

20 Aug 2019How to Upgrade Your Lifestyle and Travel More by Downsizing Your Cost-of-Living (YouTube Live Stream)00:33:43

You want to travel more; you want to have more freedom. How? One of the things that becoming a remote worker allows you to do is escape the rat race. Start living below your means. STOP caring about "keeping up with the Joneses (or Kardashians, for that matter)."

Remote work makes the social climb irrelevant and unmasks it for what it is - something Naval Ravikant calls a stupid game where you win stupid social prizes.

What if that weren’t even a factor in your life anymore? Completely irrelevant?

Sometimes I see digital nomads flying in first class on Instagram and I just laugh because they are living these amazing lives that no one can even see. Because you don’t park your BMW in front of an office when you work remotely. And it’s a beautiful thing.

When you’re a digital nomad, you’re living your best life for you. It doesn’t matter who sees it. And it’s so fulfilling.

About Kristin:
Kristin Wilson is an online entrepreneur, writer, speaker, and content creator who has lived and worked in 60+ countries. She coaches people who want to work online and travel through her courses, workshops, and two YouTube channels. She also consults companies in adopting remote work policies.

Kristin is a Top Writer on Quora and Medium who has been featured in Bloomberg Businessweek, ESPN, The New York Times, Huffpost, HGTV’s House Hunters International, and more.
