02 Sep 2020Easy Ways to Refresh Your Content Calendar | Ep. 13000:19:17

This week, we're talking about super easy ways to fill your content calendar all year.

If you're anything like me, you’re always looking for new ways to keep the ideas coming. Creating content is not easy. In fact, creating content can be really hard. One of the hardest things is coming up with ideas. It's easy to lose motivation when you don't have a consistent flow of ideas.

But your audience is counting on you to be consistent. The reason they tune in each week is that they expect you to deliver more new content, so you need to create great habits to keep that content flowing.

Highlights:

  • What habits you should develop
  • How to dive deeper into previous content
  • Find out what people are asking about
  • Zoom in on your niche
  • Repost your best content

Quotes:

"Your audience is counting on you to be consistent. The reason they tune in each week is because they expect you to deliver more new content, so you need to create great habits to keep that content flowing."

"Looking backward is a great way to create things forward."

"Niche content is about depth instead of breadth."

"Don't make your audience find the diamond in the rough. Share your diamonds with them right from the start."

"What do your listeners get from a mashup? They get several industry leaders’ opinions on one topic all in one place. And they didn't even have to listen to all those episodes to figure it out. You brought it to them. That's the power of a mashup."

06 May 2021How to Find Podcast Guests | Ep. 16400:25:24

This week we're talking about how to get amazing podcast guests to come on your show. How do you find those great guests that are going to bring your show to the next level? Your podcast guests tell people what kind of information you're going to be talking about. They let people know what kind of network you have.

The three things we're going to dive into today are how to build your Dream 100 Guest List, how to perform guests research, and then how to do guest outreach.

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Learn about the importance of having guests on your show
  • Challenge yourself to dream big for your Dream Guest List
  • Discover the secrets to get on people's radar
  • Find out how to successfully reach out to your dream guests

QUOTES:

"Write every name down. You have to set those goals upfront. This list is so important because most of us don't challenge ourselves to really get great guests on the show."

"Building that ideal guestlist actually allows you to map out those goals and set up a plan to reach those goals."

"If you're only doing this research online and you're never going out of your way offline, you are slowing yourself down."

15 May 2019#009 Tips for Going Live with Video00:27:23

The recent launch of LinkedIn’s live video service got Brandon thinking about what actually makes for engaging video content and how each person can tailor theirs to a specific audience and/or platform to get the most bang for their buck—that is to say, every dollar spent on video and broadcasting equipment. It takes more than a high quality camera and microphone to make videos people actually want to tune in.

In this episode, Brandon lays out his 7-step method for creating high quality and attention-grabbing video content.

The Finer Details of This Episode:

  • Invitation: Let people know about your product or service and where/when they can see it.
  • Context: Consider who you want to talk to and if the platform you’re using is appropriate for that audience.
  • Relevancy: Does what you’re talking about matter to your audience?
  • Engagement: Acknowledge your viewers and make them feel like they’re part of your production.
  • Answer questions: Can you provide your audience with the information they’re seeking?
  • Tell stories: Don’t just drop facts; use your presentation to craft a narrative that pulls people in.
  • Energy: Find a pace that holds your audience’s attention while not wearing yourself out.

Quotes:

“There’s no point in slowing your feed down and your recordings down to incorporate people when there’s not gonna be people there.”

“The content should fit the context of the platform.”

“You are setting the pace for how your audience interacts with you.”

08 May 2019#006 Don't Build Your Business Alone00:29:07

Launching a branding business was a tricky process for Brandon because he didn’t really have any marketing connections from his former line of corporate work. Thankfully, he was able to seek out a few communities that made his next steps more confident and purposeful, and through coaching and free resources was able to grow his own brand to where it is today.

In this episode, Brandon Birkmeyer debunks the myth that starting your own business means starting completely from scratch, discusses how to hire the right coach for you, and suggests how you can avoid some of the basic mistakes beginners make.

The Finer Details of This Episode:

  • You don’t have to start from scratch; other colleagues in your industry can provide you with tried and true jumping-off points.
  • Don’t let the independent entrepreneur mindset isolate you from advice and support!
  • The industry is full of resources—some premium, some completely free. Use them!
  • Avoid making big mistakes by speaking to the industry veterans who’ve made those very mistakes themselves on their way up.
  • Don’t be afraid to hire a coach! Brandon has tips for vetting the right one.

Quotes:

“You can benefit from finding people in your industry that are doing the same thing you’re doing.”

“Stop wasting time and start today!”

“Don’t be shy about asking for help. Just get out there and do it!”

  • Learn why Jay is so consistent with deadlines
  • Find out how to avoid frustration in your progress

QUOTES:

"It's easy for us to conclude some of the things that we need to do to get there. While it seems intuitive, it can also feel overwhelming. Where I see a lot of people struggle is they just don't get started."

"If you tell yourself or other people that you're going to do a thing, and then you don't do it, you begin to build distrust with yourself, like your word doesn't mean anything to you."

"Having these routines and rituals...removes so much existential questioning of, 'What should I do?' "

14 Apr 2021Content Marketing and Blogging with Ann Handley | Ep. 16100:27:46

Today's topic is a deep dive into content creation, content marketing, and why it matters. I discuss these topics with the amazing Ann Handley.

We also get into her personal journey going from creating content for her company and other people to also creating content for her personal brand and building a community around her ideas.

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Discover what true content marketing is
  • Figure out what platform works best for you
  • Allow yourself to be comfortable with your content
  • Understand what it means to own your content

QUOTES:

"I don't even think about content as being separate from marketing necessarily."

"The first thing is just to shift your mindset and think about everything that you do as an opportunity to tell your story, brand yourself, let people know what value you can offer them, and grow your own business. That's the value of content."

"I also wanted secondarily to see what is it like to build an audience? What does it like to connect with people? What is it like to use a vehicle like an email newsletter to extend your personal brand and to build your personal brand?"

"I think the important thing is to launch something that you own and not on a social channel."

05 Jul 2019#031 Freestyle Friday - Practicing Patience and Listening00:14:30

This week’s Freestyle Friday reminds you that leading a successful business means talking to your customers and really hearing out their wants and desires, rather than keeping them at arm’s length. If you fail to keep in touch with your customer base you can risk them moving away to a different product or service without warning. Don’t let yourself get locked out of the loop from the people who keep your business thriving!

In this episode, Brandon emphasizes why you should communicate with your customers to hear what they really want, explains how you can make it easier for them to contact you, and reminds you that it may be necessary to take it slow.

The Finer Details of This Episode:

  • If you haven’t already, do leave a star rating and review on Apple Podcasts to keep Brands on Brands on Brands on the charts.
  • Unless you’re regularly in contact with your customers and listening to what they have to say, you won’t be able to keep ahead of where they wish to spend their money.
  • Make sure that your customers have an easy way to get a hold of you through your own website and through social media.
  • Patience is essential because marketing is a long-term game that doesn’t always show immediate results.
  • Don’t be discouraged by slow growth! Take the time to get to know what your customers really want.

Quotes:

“You have to be able to talk to your customers, hear what they need and answer those needs.”

“I value what you guys say and I’m building my business around your feedback and your comments.”

“The Google search algorithm is not gonna find you if you aren’t consistent and [don’t] have a lot of content.”

In this episode, Ross discusses how he made the transition from traditional radio broadcasting to web livestreaming, gives you the low-down on how you can get a livestream setup of your own going, and makes the case for why entrepreneurs should go all in on it.

17 Nov 2021How to Get Your Podcast Discovered | Ep. 19100:14:08

This week we're talking about getting your podcast discovered. I know most of us want a bigger audience. We are creating this great content and we are hoping the right people can find it.

The way I see it, podcasters are artists. Unfortunately, getting discovered as a podcaster is not easy, just like musicians, artists, and actors. A lot of artists have realized that if they truly want to make it in this business, they've got to create that path themselves. I'd give you that same advice as a podcaster.

HIGHLIGHTS:

- Discover specific ways others have created their path

- Find out what skills you need to develop

- Know that you can succeed and be discovered

QUOTES:

"The way I see it, podcasters (like a lot of other people that are out there building something from scratch) are artists."

"As an artist, you can't just be a creator. You also have to be someone who studies media, who studies marketing, and who studies branding."

"Not everyone blew up overnight in either of these spaces. A lot of them had to keep on putting in the time and trying different things, getting better and better, and building an audience over time."

19 Jul 2019#037 Freestyle Friday - Selling vs. Serving Customers As A Personal Brands00:14:59

This week’s Freestyle Friday focuses on how to work with others and make a good impression while you are maintaining your own personal brand. Running your own business takes a lot of time, and that time is already divvied up as you try to balance several plates at once—logistics, finance, communications and, of course, content. It’s by no means an easy balancing act, so it helps to have a go-to method for establishing rapport with customers to hear what they want and figure out how you can help them.

In this episode, Brandon discusses what he says and does to establish clear, healthy communication with his customers and explains how to push them toward a sale without necessarily giving your services away for free.

The Finer Details of This Episode:

  • What do you charge for and what do you give away for free?
  • How Brandon establishes a rapport with potential customers.
  • What Brandon wants to convey in conversations with people he’s interested in working with.
  • Brandon walks us through the process he uses to diagnose his customers’ issues.
  • The three choices Brandon’s customers face at the end of the problem-solving process.

Quotes:

“You can learn the tactics of being more persuasive while still maintaining strong relationships with your customers.”

“The problem that they see in their business is a problem and it is one that is solvable, it’s not something they have to do alone.”

“When you’re giving away your free advice, when you’re giving away your tips or tricks, I do think you need to prove to people that you are the real deal.”

09 Jan 2020How to Change Your Brand Forever with Brandon Birkmeyer | BBB 094 (Season 2 Launch)00:17:15

Welcome to Season 2 everyone! Today we talk about how to change your brand forever and what to expect this season on the show.

Brands On Brands On Brands is a top 100 marketing podcast on iTunes and we are excited to continue to grow in 2020.

Make sure to go to www.brandsonbrandsonbrands.com to subscribe to the show.

This season will be talking to keynote speakers from the top marketing conferences in the country, authors who have written the best selling marketing books from the past 2 years, and entrepreneurs who are building businesses from the ground up.

On Monday, January 13th, 2020, we'll be dropping our first interview episode of Season 2. It's an interview with David Meerman Scott

And here are some highlights from this episode:

- The top way to change your approach to marketing and branding is to change the way you set priorities. You need to take the time to set a strategy that focuses on driving the most attention at the best price.

- The #1 mistake entrepreneurs are making in marketing today is investing in an agency to manage their social media posts. Those posts are better managed in-house, and that money is better spent on traffic driving Facebook ads.

- A top priority on your to do list should be to develop your message, find your voice, and understand how you differentiate yourself.

- The best reason to create content is to find your voice. Most people think creating content is about gaining subscribers. That's true in the long run, but short term your goal is to develop your voice so you can understand what you want to be "known" for.

- The three prong approach to personal branding is 1) Focus your message, 2) Build your community, and 3) Create impact in the lives of your customers. (This will be explained further in the next three episodes... stay tuned!)

13 Apr 2020Networking Secrets to Grow Your Business with Travis Chappell | Ep. 120 (Rebroadcast)00:47:40

Travis Chappell is the host of Build Your Network, one of the top 50 business podcasts. Travis also runs Cool People Cool Places, a personal development retreat for entrepreneurs. Formerly a door-to-door salesman, Travis has had an unusual career path in that he used the community he was part of to launch a business instead of the more traditional route of building a network out of an existing business.

In this episode, Travis discusses how he leveraged his network to launch a successful coaching business and explains why his personal brand was so instrumental to getting the word out.

Before we jump into the details of the episode, if you'd like to learn more about my personal branding framework, take a listen to episode 74 of the podcast!

09 Aug 2019#046 Freestyle Friday - Tackling Writer's Block00:13:08

Brandon found himself coming up short on ideas this week—ironic, considering his interview with Mike Allton about blogging and minisode about writing released just a few days ago. Thankfully, he made the most of this little mental drought by dedicating this week’s Freestyle Friday to sharing the process he uses to get out of a creative slump.

In this episode, Brandon reveals his most tried and true methods for kindly showing writer’s block the exit and invites you to send in your own solutions for stalled creativity.

  • How Brandon finds creative inspiration through both his successes and the obstacles he faces.
  • Remembering that consistency is key to long-term success and just as important—if not more so—than putting out the highest quality content possible.
  • Don’t wait for the last minute for your best ideas to percolate—take note of the little ideas that spring into your head every day.
  • When in doubt, change up your setting.
  • Email your own techniques for getting over writer’s block to brandon@brandonbrands.com (subject line: Ideas)!

Quotes:

“The simple solution to getting through [writer’s block] is talking about the struggle you’re having in the moment.”

03 Jul 2019#030 Brand Truth: What Makes Your Business Different00:13:31

What brings value to your customer and makes them choose you instead of the competition? And before you say your product or service, remember that every company out there offers a product or service as a baseline. You need to find something around your product—your customer service, your message, your whole vibe—that will make you stand out in a sea of similar services. What’s unique about your company? What inspired you to start it in the first place?

In this episode, Brandon explains why having a “quality” product isn’t nearly enough in today’s market, lists the myriad of other ways you can stand out from your competitors, and breaks down how you can figure out your strongest selling point.

The Finer Details of This Episode:

  • Saying you have a quality product or service doesn’t mean much in a market flooded with them; find something specific to say about your materials or awards.
  • Being the most convenient option may attract customers more than a low price point can.
  • Innovation can be tricky if you’ve been around for a while, but it can take many forms.
  • Do an audit and figure out where you have an advantage over your competitors.
  • What’s the emotional truth behind your business that resonates with your customers’ deeper desires?

Quotes:

“Don’t just say you’re high quality, come up with examples that explain why.”

“There might be ways to innovate in your space beyond your actual physical product.”

“You need to hone in and find out what sets you apart. That’s how you get to your brand truth.”

“There’s always little things you could be doing to take advantage of being a little bit more nimble than the big guys.”

31 Oct 2019How to Use Paid Media vs Organic Media | BBB 07600:18:12

The key to growing your brand awareness and your business leads is your ability to leverage paid and organic media. Today we talk about the difference between the two, when to use each of them, and the advantages of each approach.

For organic media, it takes a longer time to build traction. But overtime, there are massive benefits to having an owned media footprint that you control. The key to organic media is to be early to adopt fast growing new channels, to focus on engagement with your audience, and to commit to a long-term consistent presence.

For paid media, it's a more cluttered environment and takes more work to stand out from the crowd. But when you invest strategically against your core audience, you can build an audience much faster than you can with organic media. The key to paid media is to be smart about how you execute and measure your performance and to focus on ROI and converting new leads into long-term customers.

We dive into these topics and more in this weeks episode.

10 Aug 2021The 4 Stages of Personal Branding - Part 2 of 4 | Ep. 17700:17:03

This week we're talking about how to introduce your brand, your business, and yourself to other people.

We are diving into the four stages of personal branding, how to go from zero to branded. This is stage number two. We're going to be focusing on that critical piece after you find your brand identity.

Whether it's in-person, online, one-on-one, and beyond, we're going to talk about that. We're framing everything under “your message” and “the attention you get for that message.”

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Understand the importance of the words you use for yourself
  • Learn how to avoid being sales-y
  • Find out where best to introduce yourself

QUOTES:

"The words you use to explain who you are and what you do have an impact. They may make the difference between whether you get a client or don't get a client."

"The importance of today’s episode not only has to do with you being confident in how you explain what you do to others. It also has to do with the other people being able to understand what you do in a way that they’d want to take advantage of it."

"When you're only worried about the sale, in-person it feels very sales-y and you don't get the trust along the way. What I want you to worry about is in your introduction and be able to build a very brief intro."

"Networking is the best One-to-One way to build attention when you're getting started when you're in this space of introducing yourself and your personal brand to people."

This is the first topic in my three part series on creating impact through coaching, which  was covered in episode 97, "Make an Impact".

There are three steps on creating a coaching framework:

  1. Find Your Special Way – Build a model for your way of doing things which you can teach other people
  2. Test and optimize it – Figure out what works and what can be improved
  3. Find repeatable success – Your model needs to deliver consistent results across multiple clients

We dive much deeper in today's episode. Take a listen!

"Whether you're a solo or you have a team, you can't wait to create those systems. Since we had those systems, we're able to pass them off to different team members easily as we grow."

"A couple of weeks ago I took my own advice and just did what made me happy. And if they work, they work. If not, at least I'm creating content."

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE EPISODE:

  • Why building a Facebook group is effective
  • The challenges of groups and community
  • How to set intentions for the community
  • Steps to create your Facebook group
  • Best practices for opt-ins

QUOTES:

"It does take a little bit more mental strength, I think, to be a leader, but I would challenge anybody who wants to be the CEO of a company should try to be able to run a community."

"A community is a way to help us create a business that loves us back and makes us feel all valuable. I think we should not discount how much of our emotions and our brain drives our ability to be productive."

"There is always opportunity for failure and disruption. If we see those as opportunities, then growing a community and growing your business will always feel fruitful because it's like a growing pain that helps you get better and helps you get taller, proverbial, taller, you know?"

"I don't care if you have two thousand or a hundred thousand people on your list. If the two thousand people are the right people, it's always better than a hundred thousand right now."
