25 Apr 2023Trolling, why does it still hurt? with Jess00:16:30

My BIG question this week is around internet trolls and why their comments still hurt. I’ve received unsolicited commentary about my body for years, and I’ve had enough, it needs to stop.

We know it's easy to say unkind things when you’re anonymous, but isn't it time we all considered the wider consequences of these inciteful words?

While I'm hurt by recent words, I’m not broken and in this episode I’ve got some big questions for all the bullies out there hiding behind their keyboards.

Mitch also hopes his music empowers and encourages others to embrace who they are.

In this deep and empowering conversation with Jess, Mitch explains why wearing his heart on his sleeve can sometimes ruffle feathers and how he is able to not only see behind the negativity, but learned to find love for those who don't like him.

Mitch doesn't see himself as the voice of his people, just the voice of himself and his lived experience, and he doesn't want to be held back by fear. Mitch’s uses his music to spark not only joy, but  deeper conversations about what really matters, including more open and honest conversations about Domestic Violence.

01 Mar 2022Peter Overton 'That was our little secret wasn't it?'00:52:30

Peter Overton is one of Australia’s most loved Journalists. As well as anchoring the News in Sydney every night, he is a reporter for 60 minutes and has clocked up 31 years at Channel Nine, his dream job since he was a boy.

Peter is also Jessica’s beloved husband of 18 years. Jess had to convince him to be a guest on todays episode as ‘Petee’, does not like talking about himself, he wants the focus to be on other people and their stories. What you'll learn about him in this conversation is relationships are critical to  Peter who sees everyone as cogs in a wheel, he’s friends with the cleaner, plumber, and the garbo, because they enrich his life and are all part of the same success he enjoys.

In this episode Peter also reveals how Jess has brought him out as a person and taught him about mental health, and the moment Jess admitted to him she was silently battling depression with their newborn baby. Peter has since become a passionate advocate for speaking up about Postnatal depression for the fathers out there.

We hope you enjoy this beautiful story of ‘Petee’ and his pussycat Jess, proof that opposites really do attract!

21 Feb 2023Is the term housewife offensive? with Jess00:15:21

19 Sep 2023Prime Minister Anthony Albanese 'I was more damaged that I was letting on'00:37:22

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is motivated by love and hope, lessons he learnt from his single mum Maryanne growing up in a council house in Sydney. It was from Maryanne that he also learned the values of social justice and fairness, always fighting for what he believes.

In this episode Jess and the PM dig deep on how he came to terms with the end of his marriage before finding happiness again with his partner Jodie, why almost losing his life in a car accident left him more damaged than he let on and changed the way he does politics, and the surprising reason why being a Prime Minister isn't as stressful for him as you might think.

‘Albo’ also opens up about being an emotional guy, and how it feels when he’s personally attacked for doing his job, including his passion for The Voice referendum and why a YES vote is so important. As he explains on October 14 you are not going to be asked to vote for a political party or for a person, you're being asked to vote for an idea. To say YES to an invitation that comes directly from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people themselves. 19 Oct 2021Dannii Minogue ‘It didn't break me, but it left me damaged'00:42:18

Dannii Minogue knows a thing or two about resilience and reinvention. As a singer, songwriter, actress, TV personality, fashion designer and mother Dannii says staying ‘true to her joy’ keeps her on course when making the big decisions that have led to her being the international star that she is today.

Jess sat down with Dannii on her 50th birthday to talk about the importance of this milestone she calls a ‘midlife celebration’ and the past events that keep driving her to enjoy every second of this precious life she’s been given.

Also in this episode Jess goes deep with Dannii to find out how she dealt with the phone hacking scandal, why being attacked in the media for her figure left her damaged, and what finally helped her learn to love and appreciate her body. Life has taught Dannii to pay close attention to the spark inside of her, and if the joy isn't there, she moves on.

12 Oct 2021Firass Dirani is a 'free thinker' not a fighter00:44:42

Behind the class clown facade Firass Dirani is a deep and free thinker. Growing up Lebanese in the Western Suburbs of Sydney he developed a people pleasing persona to be liked instead of marginalized for being different, but if you look beyond his name, Firass says compassion and cultural understanding is the key to unlocking who he really is.

In this episode Jess Rowe sits down with the award winning actor as he recalls the hedonistic days of fame after Underbelly and the moment he told his partying friends it was all over. How a voice inside helped him see his life from a different perspective, and the decision to step back from the alcohol that once helped him navigate fame. Firass also reveals the staggering first pay cheque he received and why his mum thought he was holding it upside down, and despite ruffling feathers on SAS Australia, by staying true to his belief system and sticking to who he is he was able to uncover his greatest strength.

05 Dec 2023Jessie Stephens: Can we Choose to be Happy?00:35:08

My BIG question for this episode is Can we Choose to be Happy? and what choices can we make that can help our mental health? To help me answer that question is author, podcaster and broadcaster, Jessie Stephens.

Jessie has been very open about her own experiences with depression, and shares some of the tools that have helped her, including the idea of allowing yourself to fall in a heap, before you can put yourself back together.

Content Warning: Our conversation briefly touches on suicide, if this brings up anything for you support is available by calling Lifeline 13 11 14 for a safe place to talk day and night.

18 Jan 2022Abbie Chatfield 'It's damaging the way I see myself'00:41:33

Abbie Chatfield has built an empire off the back of reality television with her smart and self-deprecating views on sex, politics and body positivity. Her unfiltered opinons have seen her resonate with podcast, TV and radio audiences, proving this tenacious 26 year old is a force to be reckoned with.

In this episode Jess and Abbie explore where her confidence comes from, and how we all might all be inspired by Abbie to embrace the younger, wilder parts of ourselves again.

Abbie also opens up about her struggle with anxiety and depression from an early age, and how the ‘insane’ volume trolling she’s received since appearing on The Bachelor has impacted her mental health. Abbie is also a great believer in going to therapy when things are good, as that’s when the actual work happens.
