07 Feb 2021Richie Bostock | The Power of Breath01:14:36

Richie Bostock is breathwork coach, author and speaker who joins me on the podcast to share the life-changing benefits of breathwork he has experienced first-hand and also seen in the tens of thousands of people he has ‘breathed’.

Richie’s own journey starts in corporate management and digital entrepreneurship, two very high-stress environments where exhibiting stress is a sign to the people around you that you’re taking your job seriously. But it was his father’s MS diagnosis that made Richie go on a journey of discovery to help his dad, via training with the Ice Man himself, Wim Hof, that triggered a profound change in Richie too.

If you’re reading this then, well, sorry to state the obvious, but you’re breathing, but what more science and research shows us is that we may not be breathing correctly. Meaning, our breathing might actually be working against our physical, mental and emotional health. Richie discovered how to breathe for maximum benefit in all these areas, which is why he is so committed to sharing his message as far and as wide as possible.

In this conversation, @thebreathguy and I discuss:

  • How breath is free medicine; it’s just a case of knowing how to use it.
  • How the benefits of breath have been known for centuries but modern science is proven, unequivocally, the real impact it can have.
  • What he learned from the Ice Man himself @iceman_hof
  • How he ‘ripped the band-aid off’ his own life and made huge changes.
  • How breathing affected his own tendency towards OCD.
  • Why we should ‘hold all perspectives lightly’.
  • Why modern living seems to be forcing us to choose between ‘certain unhappiness’ and ‘uncertain happiness’.
  • How trying to be someone you aren’t can lead to disconnection and depression.
  • Why breath is the Swiss Army knife of the body.
  • How finding your breath and creating a space to be still can be where you tap into your intuition, and so much more…

13 Jan 2021Bullet Points | Need a good night's sleep?00:19:23

Bullet Points • Need a good night’s sleep?

In this mid-week episode I share some tips for helping you get a better night’s sleep since it’s something, based on the DMs, messages and emails I’ve been receiving, that seems to be bothering a lot of people right now.

I can relate, I’ve suffered with insomnia in the past and stress is often the thing that causes the most disruption to my ability to fall asleep, stay sleeping and sleep well.

As we’re all under added stress right now it’s no surprise that for a lot of people sleep is becoming harder and harder.

In the episode, I share the five strategies that have worked for me and that I recommend to try to get sleep back on track, even with the added stresses and strains:

- Make a list of everything that’s on your mind before your head hits the pillow. The act of writing out any worries can compartmentalise them and minimise the stress attached to them.

- If you’re working from home and are tempted to have a quick nap when you’d normally run out for your afternoon coffee then, well, don’t.

- Create the perfect environment for sleep; a comfortable bed, the right kind of lighting, the right temperature - it all helps.

- Create a sleep schedule - and stick to it.

- Take a look and what you’re eating and when you’re eating it. A small tweak such as eating dinner an hour earlier could make all the difference when it comes to sleep quality.

29 Jan 2018Habit 3 | Early morning meditation00:11:04

It's time for my third #26habits and after 48% of you on twitter and 60% of you on the Facebook group voted for Daily Meditation it's the habit I'm tackling next.

Sitting quietly every day seems like quite a singular pursuit so as with all these #26habits I want there to be take-away for you, my lovely listeners. I'll be keeping a journal of the benefits I feel straight away and over time, how easy it is to incorporate into my day and much more during the two weeks, but I would love to know what questions you have about this particular habit.

For this challenge I will be using the Headspace app, which I personally started using about 18 months ago when I was struggling with anxiety. It's now an app I use semi-regularly, but not as much as I should...

Email me at thebeautypodcast@gmail.com or DM me on twitter @emmaguns and instagram @emmaguns and I'll answer the questions in the next #26habits podcast update. To join the Facebook group click here >> The Emma Guns Show Facebook Forum.

17 Feb 2021Bullet Points | Book Club00:15:58

It’s time for another #bookclub episode of the podcast, not least because you’ve been sharing with me, via DM and email, the books you’ve been enjoying lately. I’ve also had my nose, and ears, in some great reads and I’m sharing my five favourites with you.

I selected books I’ve found informative, inspiring, entertaining and downright eye-opening and I’d love to hear your thoughts.

In today’s #bookclub episode:

Never Split the Difference by Chris Voss (@thefbinegotiator) and Tahl Raz. Keep hitting the same dead-ends in your lines of communication? This book could help and Chris’ insights in his time as a hostage negotiator are incredibly helpful.

TMI: My Life in Scandal by Perez Hilton (@theperezhilton). Perez came on the podcast at the end of last year and it was in preparing for that conversation that I read this book. It’s a fascinating insight into what was going on as Perez, and his hugely popular website, charted a unique period in celebrity history.

Open Book: A Memoir by Jessica Simpson (@jessicasimpson). I used to love a TV show on MTV called Diary. The tagline was ‘you think you know, but you have no idea’. This is my way of saying that I thought I had the measure of Jessica Simpson, but it turns out I didn’t have a clue. I listened to this on @audible and it’s a triumph, not least because of the way in which Jessica tells her story.

Untamed: Stop Pleasing, Start Living by Glennon Doyle (@glennondoyle) Yep, @adele influenced me into buying this. One social media post and within seconds it’s on my @amazonkindle. Adele said ‘this books will shake your  brain and make your soul scream’, but what do you think?

How to Heal a Broken Heart by Rosie Green (@lifesrosie). Rosie charts her journey through heartbreak and the disintegration of everything she thought was certain and it’s raw, honest and not at all sugar-coated. In this book Rosie re-enters that pain in order to offer anyone else experiencing it a path out of it. Her honesty, candour and resilience shine through and it’s a must-read guide for anyone struggling with heartache, loss or rejection.

19 Jun 2021Julia Samuel | Every Family Has a Story01:01:32

Julia Samuel psychotherapist and author who returns to the podcast to talk about how we can learn to love ourselves. The topic of this podcast was sparked by a conversation Julia (@juliasamuelmbe) and I had at the end of 2020 when we discussed how liking yourself, or loving yourself, is the foundation for the relationships you are subsequently able to form with others.

It made me wonder if your relationships are always challenging, cause your stress and/or pain or leave you heartbroken, is it wise to take a step back and examine how you feel about yourself before you make connections with others.

In this episode, we discuss attachment theory, why loving and being loved is such a vital component of our identity, the risk in loving others and why we need to pay more attention to our feelings, rather than override them because of what others think because they are actually trying to steer us towards the things we need.

We also, very unscripted I hasten to add, did a little exercise - The Felt Sense by Eugene Gendlin - which was a first for me on this podcast. Speaking of that exercise, it’s slightly hypnotic and could be distracting so please be aware of this and don’t follow along if you’re driving, operating heavy machinery or if your attention is required elsewhere.

Before I sat down for this call with Julia, I was telling some friends that I was speaking to her again and as Julia has a huge amount of expertise in grief counselling and living losses, someone suggested I ask her about the end of friendships, female friendships in this instance, and how devastating they can be.

I think the end of friendships can be trivialised in a way we wouldn’t do with a romantic relationship and so in this episode, we discuss why it’s legitimate to feel the same, or similar, kind of heartbreak after a friendship ends as it is when a relationship does.

Julia's book This Too Shall Pass is available now.

Julia's podcast A Living Loss is available on all good podcast platforms.

03 Oct 2020Being More Keanu with James King01:07:31

James King is a writer, film critic and broadcaster who joins me to talk about his new book Be More Keanu. What might look like a love letter to Keanu Reeves is actually a self-help manual in disguise - instead of ancient scripts and proverbs the Tao of Keanu is told via the actor's film choices, characters and actions both on and off-screen.

In this conversation James and I discuss:

  • Why there's a lot to be learned from Keanu Reeves.
  • Why his film choices have often told a bigger story about Keanu's understanding of the world.
  • Why Keanu's brand of kindness is one we should all aspire to.
  • What it takes to be a film critic and whether it actually stops you enjoying films.
  • What it's like interviewing A-list film stars and why Keanu has stood out from the crowd.
  • The value in making mistakes, and much more.

Also in this conversation the Sex and the City 2 and Entourage reviews by Mark Kermode, which are worth a watch.

11 Nov 2020Beauty Special | Understanding the skin’s microbiome with Lancôme.00:35:11

This episode of The Emma Guns Show is brought you in collaboration with Lancôme.

Annie Black is Lancôme’s International Scientific Director, and she joins me in this beauty special to explain what the microbiome is, why we all have one that’s completely unique to us and how we can look after it for optimum skin health using Lancôme Advanced Génifique Serum.

Annie not only explains the extensive research that has gone into creating a product, the Lancôme Advanced Génifique Serum, that supports a healthy microbiome but why it’s universal and can be incorporated into anyone’s skincare regime regardless of age or skin type.

In this conversation Annie and I discuss:

  • What the microbiome is and why it’s fundamental to skin health.
  • How the microbiome can be compromised and how that’ll look and feel on our skin.
  • The role that the topical application of prebiotics and probiotics plays on supporting our microbiome.
  • The clinical trials and research over nearly 20 years that have informed the experts and Lancome into how to create skincare that promotes optimum skin health.
  • The results you can expect from using Advanced Génifique serum and how to incorporate it into your current skincare regime.
  • Plus Annie also shares the one thing she wishes people wouldn’t do their skin.

17 Apr 2021Dr Annice Mukherjee | How to Navigate Menopause01:22:53

Dr Annice Mukherjee joins me on the podcast to share her guide to navigating menopause as well as the importance of understanding how our hormones are making us feel throughout our lives.

Dr Mukherjee is a physician and endocrinologist who specialises in supporting patients with complex medical illness, quality of life in endocrine disease, hormone problems in cancer survivors, including early menopause and other complex medical issues. She also takes a special interest in helping patients manage chronic fatigue.

In her new book, The Complete Guide to the Menopause Annice outlines her toolkit for managing menopause and, hopefully, the strategies that’ll help you navigate it with far greater ease.

24 Feb 2021Bullet Points | News and FAQs00:21:34

In this midweek show, I share some news and also answer three of my most frequently asked questions.

News:

I've been on the other side of the microphone as a guest on other podcasts incl; Emma Forbes Life & Soul, Heather Thomson In My Heart, and Liz Bohannon's Plucking Up.

I also wrote a feature about binge-eating disorder and having breast reduction surgery helped me tackle my issues with over-eating in Red Magazine.

FAQs:

I'm often asked if I'm still doing Jillian Michaels workouts from her Jillian Michaels Fitness App and in this episode, I share the workouts I've used and enjoyed, how I found inspiration from Madison Lecroy to try a resistance band workout, and the free workout videos available on Youtube.

I've had lots of questions about hair loss, hair thinning and hair shedding and I update you on my progress and the two videos I've created to share my own update and the best advice I can give for anyone tackling these issues.

And finally, as we enter our roadmap out of Covid here in the UK I share the reactions listeners have been sharing with me about this - some negative, some positive and the strategies I think may help.

24 Mar 2021Bullet Points | Can you have 'burnout' in lockdown?00:20:14

Can you have burnout in lockdown?

Are you at the end of your rope? Have you had it up to ‘here’? Are you over it? Are you just so plain exhausted that you just can't be bothered?

I don’t know about you, but all the things that used to push me to this feeling haven’t been present in lockdown. I’m no longer rushing, catching trains, trying to keep appointments and juggling a work and social life. I haven’t gone far or done much outside of my home in nearly a year yet I’m feeling similar feelings to those I’ve felt when I’ve previously burnt the candle at both ends. But how?

As I started to investigate what burnout really feels like, what it means, how you get it and how to avoid it, I came across some interesting facts.

In this new episode, I talk about why burnout is actually pretty specific, why the language around feeling overworked, exhausted and tired makes matters even more complicated and why now is a good time to give yourself a break.

  2. The Imposter Cure by Dr Jessamy Hibberd
  3. Burnout: Solve your Stress Cycle by Emily Nagoski

28 Jul 2020Why Breast Reduction Surgery Changed My Life00:30:16

It’s been a year since I had breast reduction surgery and when I decided to have this operation I thought it was going to be life-changing, but it wasn’t.

It turns out that if I wanted to change my life, undo self-sabotaging behaviours and really address my issues with my own body image, it wasn’t something I could outsource - this needed to be an inside job. So, that’s what the last 12 months have been about confronting and addressing demons, being honest with myself and making changes for my long-term mental, emotional and physical health.

I’m made this video/audio because I receive messages daily about my breast reduction surgery, but in recent months I’ve been also been receiving messages about my weight loss, in the main along the lines of ‘how have you done it?’ and it feels impossible to talk about one without mentioning the other.

If you do have questions about breast reduction surgery or anything else discussed in this video please do feel free to comment or please know that my DMs are open.

Trigger warning: I am aware that some of what I have mentioned in this video may be triggering for some viewers. It is never my intention to create content that will upset, offend or alienate, but this is the only way I knew how to articulate my own personal journey and I hope you don’t mind me using my platform to do so.

18 Apr 2021Feel-Good Habits | Eve Kalinik00:32:35

Eve Kalinik returns to the podcast to share her feel-good habits, the strategies she uses and recommends to make sure every day is a good day.

During our conversation @evekalinik reveals:

  • How achieving a sense of perspective is just one of the many benefits of a walk outside in fresh air.
  • Why the kitchen is her happy place (I mean, she is a nutritional therapist) and how methodically working through a recipe can clear her head.
  • Why she’s so glad to have discovered yoga at the age of 16 and why it’s far more mental a practice than physical for her.
  • Why she lingers on and really enjoys a good, delicious glass of wine. And how to find a good wine in amongst all the bad ones.
  • Why she likes to believe in a little bit of ‘magic’ for staying positive.

15 Apr 2018Habit 8 | What is a ketogenic diet and how do I do it? UPDATE.00:11:50

The ketogenic diet is a way of eating that starves your body of carbohydrates so that you switch from using sugar and glucose stores as energy to using fat as your main fuel source - in this update episode I tell you whether it's easy to change your diet and become a natural fat-burner. The benefits, incidentally, aren't just about fat-burning and weight loss, with many health professionals suggesting the long-term benefits of eating a ketogenic diet are massive.

Much like intermittent fasting, habit number 6, immediate benefits are said to be better sleep, increased mental clarity and optimised endurance ability when exercising.

07 Mar 2021Jess Griffiths | Everything you need to know about Binge Eating Disorder.01:05:32

Trigger warning: this episode contains references to suicide.

Jess Griffiths is the Clinical Lead for @beatedsupport and she joins me in this episode of the podcast to discuss eating disorders, in particular, binge-eating disorder.

If you’re a regular listener or have followed me for a while, you’ll know this is something I struggle with so I wanted to bring Jess onto the show to shed light on a type of eating disorder that affects more people than you might imagine, yet is a type of eating disorder that is not as widely-known as anorexia and bulimia.

In this episode, @jessthegryffindor shares her expertise and insights on:

  • What exactly binge-eating disorder and what it might look like and feel.
  • How preoccupation with food, weight and shape can be an indicator of a bigger issue.
  • Why eating disorders tend to disproportionately affect a people-pleasing personality type.
  • Why it’s estimated that at least 30% of people who present as morbidly obsessed have binge-eating disorder.
  • How Cognitive Behavioural Therapy has an excellent success rate when offered as treatment, but why there is a severe lack of resources which means diet and exercise are often given as a ‘fix’.
  • The body positivity and body acceptance movements and whether, in some instances, they have the potential to endorse behaviours associated with a mental health issue.
  • The link between eating disorders and depression, and much more…

It is never my intention to create content that will upset, offend or alienate and I am very much aware of how much I am still learning on this journey and about this subject, but I felt this was an important conversation to have

If you’re worried about your own or someone else’s health, you can contact Beat, the UK’s eating disorder charity, 365 days a year on 0808 801 0677 or beateatingdisorders.org.uk

30 May 2021Feel-Good Habits | Emilie McMeekan & Annabel Rivkin from The Midult00:55:00

Emilie McMeekan and Annabel Rivkin are the genius duo behind @themidult and they join me on the podcast to share their feel-good habits, the strategies they use and recommend to make sure every day is a good day.

As this is the first time a duo has appeared on the podcast they are each choosing two feel-good habits and then one feel-good habit they share.

In this episode, Emilie and Annabel share:

  • Why adrenaline and being suspended from a great height, with the added element of competition, is a go-to for Emilie when she needs to recalibrate.
  • The bliss of a bath for Annabel and why it’s where she’ll allow herself to be messy. Note: if you don’t take an orange into the bath after this then you’re bathing all wrong.
  • Why Emilie has embraced Til-Tok life and why being current and up-to-date on the latest trends feels empowering.
  • The joy to be had from hate-watching period dramas and why Annabel has yelled at Bridgerton more than once.
  • Then there’s the joint habit that combines luxury and work and is one of their most productive habits of all.

12 Feb 2018Habit 4 | Is sobriety the way forward?00:14:42

#26habits is teaming up with The Pool (@thepooluk) and in this fourth habit I'm going to be exploring the benefits of being tee-total with Junior AV Producer Hannah Varrall (@hannahvarr).

Neither of us would say we have a problem with alcohol, we both fall into the camp of being pretty indifferent to it until it's in front of us in social situations, but is it doing us more harm that we realise?

Is casual drinking, when alcohol is a known depressant, a problem in a time when more and more people are citing struggles with stress and anxiety?

We're almost conditioned to believe that a drink will 'take the edge' off a hard day, but what lies beyond that moment? We're going to find out...

Hannah and I are going to be each other's buddy while we navigate this new world of saying 'no' to a drink at the bar or declaring 'not for me' when we're out with friends, when there's no excuse other than, 'I've just decided drinking isn't for me.'

During these two weeks I'm going to speak to people who have quit drinking for their physical health, to increase their productivity or because they felt it posed a threat to their mental health and ask them how abstaining from alcohol changed their lives.

And I want to hear from you. Is this something you've done? Have you quit alcohol and seen a massive benefit? Or do you think a drink every now and again is perfectly fine? Tweet me at @emmaguns and @thepooluk or slide into DM on instagram @emmaguns and @thepooluk.

Don't forget to follow us on Facebook The Emma Guns Show and The Pool.

03 Mar 2021Bullet Points | At-home Fitness00:22:19

In this week’s Bullet Points, the focus is on home workouts.

With gyms closed, a lot of us have had to figure out how to maintain our fitness or get something resembling a decent workout at home. Sales of home gym equipment surged by over 5000% last year, so clearly a lot of us have had to find a way.

Whether you’ll be first in line when gyms reopen or have become a convert to the at-home workout, in this episode I share the kit I think is non-negotiable whether you want an intense sweat session or a well-earned stretch.

My at-home gym consists of:

I also have some sliders gathering dust in a drawer and was very close buying a weight vest last summer, but thankfully good sense took over.

I am not a qualified trainer and have no professional fitness experience. If you’re looking for inspiration then I highly recommend @aliceliveing @jillianmichaels @zannavandijk @popsugarfitness on @youtube

During our conversation, @itsmeanitab reveals:

  • How an ADHD diagnosis freed her from thinking she was stupid and lazy.
  • Why outsourcing and delegating is vital because it's acknowledging that you need help in certain areas.
  • Why planning, tracking and organising allow her to make progress.
  • Why it's so important for her to cultivate and curate a space that's beautiful.
  • How she carves out free time and makes sure she uses it well.
  • Her love of history and why virtual walking tours through London have been so valuable during lockdown.
  • Why self-development is such a passion of hers and how it all started with Tony Robbins CDs and Oprah.
  • Why it's so important to find inspiration in people that you see yourself in, who look like you and who represent who you are and where you come from.

  • Why surrounding herself with beauty and luxury isn't shallow and is an ultimate feel-good habit.

In this episode, @evypoumpouras shares:

  • Why avoidance gets you nowhere and it pays to face and address the things in life you find challenging.
  • Why so many feel-good habits won’t feel good in the short-term, but it’s the long-term yield that makes consistency and perseverance worthwhile.
  • Why her favourite form or instant gratification comes on the shape of a @dunkin Cappuccino Blast.
  • Why her evening habits routine is ‘Evy Time’ and is how she can ensure she operates at her optimum.
  • Her evening workout, which includes some kit from @onnit and why she loves being strong.

22 Apr 2018Habit 9 | How can I live a more environmentally friendly life?00:12:33

Climate change is real. I'm not being flippant, but with some people questioning whether global warming is actually something we need to worry about it's time to look at some hard facts. Millions of tonnes of plastic end up in the ocean each year, plastic bags take upwards of 1000 years to degrade and knowing what can and can't be recycled isn't an easy as it maybe should be.

In this ninth #26habits I'm looking at the small, sustainable changes I can make to the products and services I consume and the way I recycle that will stop me contributing to the problem. Just a small about of internet research and I found that things I thought could be recycled can't and vice versa. It's time to educate myself as much as it's time to make changes.

Tune into the show to find out what steps I'll be taking over these next two weeks to break the habit of unwillingly contributing to climate change.

06 May 2018Habit 10 | Will decluttering my wardrobe make me happier?00:17:21

This #26habits, or a version of it, was something I didn’t feel brave, ready or inclined to do. I knew I wanted to get rid of everything in my wardrobe and start again, but the prospect of doing so was very easy to dismiss as ‘ridiculous’ and move away from quickly.

In the last year I’ve had a series of spontaneous clear outs, but have never had the guts to tackle my closet - until now...

I read Tessa Coates featureWhy Having Just 33 Items of Clothing Could Mean You Have More to WearonThe Pool and realised she’d given me the perfect stepping stone to my ultimate goal. The premise is to whittle down your wardrobe to just 33 items - the ones that don’t make the cut are kept out of site, donated or sold - and wear only these for three months.

Even I didn’t realise why I was shying away from a wardrobe cleanse, until I followed the first step in the 333 Challenge and put every single item of clothing I own on my bed…
