On this episode, Chewy and Eugene discuss some white belt BJJ tips that came from a Reddit BJJ forum. We break down 8 pieces of advice and discuss whether we agree or disagree with them.

Here is the list:

  1. Never date a girl/guy from the gym, (it’s easier to get better when you enjoy the place where you train).
  2. Stop trying to win. It makes you get hurt. Just get sweaty.
  3. Relax…Jiu-Jitsu is like farting. If you have to force it then it’s probably sh*t.
  4. Baby every injury (also tap quick).
  5. Technique is everything.
  6. Ask questions in person (don’t skip rounds)
  7. Recalibrate intensity and err on the side of too easy.
  8. 2 x a week for 10 years is better than 2 x a day for 3 years.

25 Apr 2022Episode 204 - Qualities Of A Smart BJJ Practitioner (Part 1)01:11:37

On this episode we discuss 10 qualities of a smart Jiu-Jitsu practitioner.

This episode comes from an e-mail that Chewy had on his e-mail list. This is not meant to be an exhaustive list, but the first 10 qualities that Chewy came up with.

Here is 1-10:

  1. Is motivated by their long-term goals, not short-term gratification or feelings.
  2. Can focus on a particular technique for a longtime.
  3. Is willing to put themselves into uncomfortable positions because they know growth doesn’t come from the comfortable.
  4. Doesn’t avoid the tough rounds in the gym.
  5. Is smart enough to take rest days instead of trying to push their already exhausted body to the limit since it leads to subpar training at best, and injuries at worst.
  6. Understands losing and failure is going to happen and doesn’t let it create paralyzing fear or worry.
  7. Has a game plan of their style.
  8. Works to improve their diet and lifestyle just as they improve their techniques.
  9. Takes part in physical conditioning to improve the strength and ability of their body. Since BJJ is dictated by the health and abilities of their body.
  10. Trains hard but doesn’t intentionally risk their training partner's health.
