24 Aug 2021Southern Marching Bands & Majorettes00:29:53

No surprises here, especially if you’ve been listening to this podcast for a while or lived in the South very long, that college football is a big deal here.

On this episodewe are talking about the BACKBONE of college football. The talent and esteem found in marching bands are proof that music is an incredibly important part of the game and one of the South’s fondest college football traditions.

For more COLLEGE FOOTBALL TRADITIONS in the South check out this previous episode (one of our favorite episodes to date)

Every now and then, we come upon something we like so much we HAVE to tell you aboue. On this episode we shared a podcast we are loving: Vanishing Postcards. Hosted by Texas native Evan Stern, Vanishing Postcards invites listeners to ride shotgun on a road trip exploring the hidden dives, traditions and frequently threatened histories discovered by exiting the interstates. Featuring stories from dance halls, bbq joints, honky tonks and more, Vanishing Postcards is an immersive, touching and frequently humorous experience- perfect for when you need a breather, but don’t have the time or luxury of hitting the open road. To join the ride, please find Vanishing Postcards wherever you get your podcasts, and tell Evan we sent you!

18 Aug 2020Women Get the Vote!00:25:38
The date this episode releases (August 18) marks the 100 year anniversary of women winning the right to vote in the U.S. and the final state to pass ratification was Tennessee.

The Hermitage Hotel in Nashville, TN (where it all unfolded) is inviting both visitors and locals alike to learn about the events that transpired leading up to the ratification of the 19th Amendment.
We sat down with managing director of the hotel, Dee Patel, to collect stories of suffragists and anti-suffragists that stayed in the hotel 100 years ago today.

Dee Patel was born and raised in Coventry, England, attended high school in Mississippi and graduated at age 16. From there, she headed to Johnson and Wales University in Charleston, South Carolina, and spent time working for The Jefferson in Richmond, Virginia, after graduation. In 2003, she made her way to Nashville,  joined the The Hermitage Hotel and 17 years later, Dee serves as the first female Managing Director of the hotel!

A fantastic 1 hour documentary put together by Nashville Public Television called BY ONE VOTE highlights the role the south - specifically NASHVILLE played in passing the right for women to vote. You can watch it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sxZAE6fopjU

26 Mar 2024Remembering Minnie Pearl... feat. Mary Beth Pruett00:43:54

Today we are remembering the late great, Minnie Pearl.

HOOOOOWWWWDDEE! We are just so proud to be here today with a special guest!

Born and raised a Tennessee farm girl, Mary Beth Pruett still lives on the farm started by her great-great grandfather. She loves horses and dogs, reading and good music! She doesn't remember a time that she did not want to be a writer. She has been writing her whole life, but ended up a librarian. Mary Beth also happens to be the great niece of Sara Ophelia Cannon, better known as Minnie Pearl. Mary Beth is a wealth of knowledge and history not just with her Great Aunt but also with the history of Centerville/Hickman County, Tennessee.

Connect with Mary Beth's blog: http://sitaspellwithmary.blogspot.com/

Her book “Turn by the Red Calf” details adventures and misadventures on her ancestral Tennessee farm and musings from life and daily observations. Pruett has a wry and often humorous perspective on the pleasures and pitfalls of living in an old farmhouse with four lively dogs and trying to keep tabs on a farm approaching the two century mark.

05 Nov 2024Sister Chat: Election Day Table Talk00:25:23

We wanted to take time to address how to walk out your relationships and hospitality head on before the election results are tallied. How we do those things practically do not change dependent on circumstances or election outcomes. Join us at the table as we discuss how we plan to do this.

This particular episode is going to feel a bit more built on our Christian faith because that is the only way we know how to walk out loving people who think differently than we do. Honestly, we don’t have a lot to offer on how to walk this out practically other than leaning in to our Christian faith on how we can have the mind of Christ.

Mentioned in this episode:

  • Read The Sermon on the Mount - The Beatitudes. (Matthew 5: 3-10) Our friend Pastor Glenda Sutton says, this is the attitudes we need to Be In! The whole chapter of Matthew 5 is a great place to start. This chapter also includes verses 45-48 which is all about loving our enemies.

  • Matthew 5:43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. 46 For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47 And if you greet only your brothers,[i] what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? 48 You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

  • Scriptures about praying for leaders:
  1. 1 Timothy 2:1-2 - I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.
  2. 1 Peter 2:17  - Show proper respect to everyone, love the family of believers, fear God, honor the emperor.
  3. Romans 13:1 - Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. (He will use whoever is in office to accomplish his purposes, but it is not always through signing of bills/laws)
  4. Jeremiah 29:7 - Also, seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the LORD for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper.
  5. Psalms 2:10-11 -  Therefore, you kings, be wise; be warned, you rulers of the earth. Serve the LORD with fear and celebrate his rule with trembling.
  6. Proverbs 11:14 - For lack of guidance a nation falls, but victory is won through many advisers.
  7. Proverbs 21:1 - The king’s heart is a stream of water in the hand of the LORD; he turns it wherever he will.

  • May the peace of the Lord be with y'all!

08 Sep 2020A Southern Flower Farm: 1818 Farms00:39:34

Today we are talking to Natasha McCrary, of Mooresville, Alabama, she's the owner and operator of 1818 Farms. She started the business in 2013 when her son fell in love with Southdown Babydoll Sheep. She had no experience raising the sheep, let alone running a farm. But then she had an idea of how she could make it work: combine a farm with a small business that would help cover the cost of food for the animals. The result was 1818 Farms, a working flower farm that’s also a line of bath and lifestyle products. In 2019 Natasha won Amazon’s Woman-Owned Small Business of the Year award, thanks to these best-selling products.

10 May 2022Odd Southern Foods00:30:07
On this episode, we are talking about odd Southern foods… more bizarre than putting your peanuts in a glass-bottled coke.. although we do recommend trying that.
These are foods that us Southerners love that might come from a roadside stand or a gas station, but as we’ve mentioned before, the origin of eating such peculiar foods usually comes from times when folks needed to use all resources and waste not.

Thank you to our patrons! We love you and could not — seriously could not have afforded to keep the podcast going without you.
If you want to learn how you can get our bonus episode the Southern Sister Chat plus t-shirt and other Southern treats sent to you, then visit Patreon.com/SteelMagnolias.

A few highlights of foods mentioned: Kool-aid pickles, pokeweed, aspics, liver mush, chocolate gravy and chitlins.

05 Sep 2023Waffle House00:33:23

In 1955, two Georgia neighbors opened up a restaurant that would change the world.  Joe Rogers Sr. and Tom Forkner were living in Avondale Estates, GA, when they decided to open a 24-hour, sit-down restaurant for their friends and neighbors, focused on people on both sides of the counter.  That first restaurant opened the door to create the Waffle House brand that you see today.

We love this place and hope you have a Waffle House near you!

03 Sep 2024Clogging for the Next Generation feat. Tommy Jackson00:28:37

Every region has its own culture of music, dance, food, language, faith expressions, and more. With the fast pace of life these days, it takes intentionality to keep those aspects of culture alive. Here in Franklin, Tennessee, we have someone keeping square dancing and clogging alive. Join us at the table as we sit with Tommy Jackson to hear about his Rocky Top Revue.

Tommy Jackson is a native of Franklin, Tennessee and has literally been dancing longer than we’ve been alive! He formed the Rocky Top Revue in 1982 and they’ve made numerous appearances on the Grand Ole Opry, The Ryman, music videos, opened for Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton and George Jones, and won numerous competitions. Every Sunday afternoon you will find him teaching free dance lessons on the old courthouse steps in downtown Franklin, Tennessee.

25 Oct 2022Krispy Kreme00:26:08
Driving down the road a RED neon light flashes on that catches your eye: HOT NOW the sign reads… Original Glazed Krispy Kreme. If you’ve ever experienced a warm, melty Krispy Kreme donut then you know there is no going back. How did 2 brothers in Winston Salem set out to make the most awesome donuts on the planet? Let’s take a coffee break at the table and find out…

In 1933, Vernon Carver Rudolph, the founder of Krispy Kreme, bought a doughnut shop in Paducah, Kentucky, from a French chef from New Orleans. He received the company’s assets, goodwill, and the rights to a secret yeast-raised doughnut recipe. On this episode we are talking about the donuts that started in the South!

13 Oct 2020Florida Highwaymen00:32:54

Beginning in the 1950s, a group of mostly self-taught African American artists devoted themselves to capturing Florida’s natural landscapes and without acceptance into southern art galleries, the group of about 26 artists sold their art out of their cars along the highways. We are paying respect to such an inventive group by discussing their stories!

Gary Monroe, a working artist and Florida native, has captured many of the works in these books:

Key lime pie is officially the pie of Florida. The name comes from its association with the Florida Keys, where it is best known and it’s a delicious part of summer!
But have you heard of sour orange pie? Floridians have the luxury of access to a lot of oranges but some of them are just too sour to eat off the tree so they came up with a way to balance the tartness by putting it in a pie… brilliant!

08 Feb 2022Visit Birmingham: Weekend Edition00:24:43

Last year, the city of Birmingham, Alabama celebrated its 150th anniversary. 150 years ago, iron ore, coal and limestone defined Birmingham. Today, however, it may be more synonymous with the civil rights movement. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said of Birmingham, “I like to believe that the negative extremes of Birmingham's past will resolve into the positive and utopian extreme of her future, that the sins of a dark yesterday will be redeemed in the achievements of a bright tomorrow.” We had a chance to visit the Magic City, and we're here to tell you all about it.

15 Nov 2022Virginia is for Peanuts00:23:32
On today’s episode, we got to speak with Marshall Rabil, of Virginia-based, female and family-owned Hubbard Peanut Company, aka HUBS. Many years ago, in the small Virginia crossroads village of Sedley, Dot Hubbard developed a unique way to cook the Virginia peanuts grown on her father's farm. She diligently used only the finest peanuts from the local harvest. Today, Dot's recipe for using only the best remains unchanged.
Sedley is pretty close to the NC border - directly east of Virginia Beach.

Virginia has become well-known for its gourmet peanuts, with farmers in the southeastern portion of the state producing millions of pounds each year. The legume, commonly referred to as a nut, is enjoyed raw or boiled.

The Virginia Peanuts stands out from the other peanut varieties in both size and taste; they are the largest peanut, are more flavorful than the three other varieties, and have a characteristic crunch when eaten. Virginia Peanuts are commonly called the “Ballpark Peanut” because they are the peanut variety sold at baseball games across the country.

We are spending some time discussing what life in the south is about to look like as states begin to “open up” post Covid-19 pandemic.
Will we entertain again? Wear masks sporting our SEC teams? Enter the grocery store or stay with pick up?

Seems appropriate that we’d talk about any radio show that’s the longest running in history, producing shows each week right here in the South… but especially one that’s right here in our back yard of Nashville, TN. Excited to talk about the Grand Ole Opry!

Check out Ken Burns’ documentary Country Music.

30 Mar 2021Gumbo00:30:33
Gumbo, the official cuisine of Louisiana, is a thick stew which consists primarily of a strongly-flavored stock, meat or shellfish, a thickener, and the Cajun/Creole "holy trinity" ― celery, bell peppers, and onions. It's sometimes hard to get your hands on a great gumbo recipe, so we took a cooking class to immerse ourselves in this spicy goodness!

07 Sep 2021Packhorse Librarians00:29:09
Judy Blume once said "Librarians save lives: by handing the right book, at the right time, to a kid in need."

Librarians play an important role in the lives of those who love to read. But what if you had no access to a library nor books? Today we are discussing some heroic librarians that filled a gap in a time of great need in the South.

Under President Roosevlet, The Pack Horse Library initiative provided women jobs as  librarians sent deep into Appalachia on horseback to deliver books. The project was implemented by the Works Progress Administration (WPA), and today we are honoring these steel magnolias that saved lives in Kentucky through books.

Most towns across the U.S. are named after their founders or politicians at the time, or just a simple word with ‘ville’ on the end. We live in Franklin, TN named after Benjamin Franklin. It was going to be called Marthasville, named for the town founder’s wife Martha, but that changed at the last minute. What you’ll hear in this episode is that there are some WEIRD names out there for towns all across the South.

27 Aug 2024Male Southern Authors00:47:21

Southern writers are at a bit of an advantage in that we have a powerful sense of place, but mostly we know characters. We ARE characters. We come from families, neighborhoods, churches, and kinfolk that are the stuff you think is made up, but only slightly. We love an embellished story. We are storytellers. To be southern is to be a good storyteller. Join us at the table as we discuss male southern authors.

We already did an episode on female southern authors. You can listen to that here: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/steel-magnolias-podcast/id1442852139?i=1000554084762

18 Apr 2023Southerners Hosting Tea (For the Coronation of King Charles III)00:42:13
Charles Philip Arthur George also known as Charles III is King of the United Kingdom and the 14 other commonwealth realms. On May 6, 2023, The Archbishop of Canterbury will lead the coronation for King Charles. We recently sat down for tea with our friend and former guest, Laura Stockett Roberts, to discuss ways us southerners can celebrate and the origins of taking tea. Laura is a native of Mississippi and lives here in Nashville with her husband and sons. She creates fantastic videos that show us exactly how to handle the old things, how to care for them, use them, and just love on them. She writes, entertains, and is just a lovely southerner. Grab your cup and meet me at the table.

Whether you intend to watch the King’s coronation or not, it’s incredibly hospitable and just fun  to have a friend over for tea.
Let Laura Stockett Roberts inspire you to set your table and invite a friend over!

04 Jun 2024Muscle Shoals00:47:14

"Any discussion about American music that doesn’t include Muscle Shoals, Alabama isn’t really a discussion at all.” That’s a direct quote from the website of FAME STUDIOS.

We had a chance to visit Muscle Shoals and the 2 studios that stayed undercover for most of the 60’s and 70’s while legends came to record with a producer and a rhythm section that should be household names. Join us at the table as we discuss the music of Muscle Shoals.

If you’re a big Lynyrd Skynyrd fan you may have caught the name Muscle Shoals in some lyrics, but you may have NEVER EVER heard of this place and that’s ok. But if you love music, you’re gonna wanna pack your backs and make the trek. WE promise. It’s worth it!

31 Jan 2023Visit Decatur, Alabama00:20:30

In today's episode we will share about our recent day trip to Decatur, AL.

Just 90 miles south of where we live in Franklin, TN, and a straight shot down I-65S we found a quaint down with Big Bob Gibson's famous BBQ and a natural science museum for all science lovers!

Our Day:

  • BBQ lunch at Big Bob Gibson - Widely recognized as one of the oldest and most prestigious barbecue restaurants in the world, Big Bob Gibson Bar-B-Q was founded in Decatur, AL in 1925. https://bigbobgibson.com
  • Afternoon at The Cook Museum of Natural Science. A state-of-the-art natural science museum in downtown Decatur, AL. It provides a hands-on, immersive experience where kids (and teens, and adults!) can explore, interact with, and learn about nature. The Cook Museum’s humble roots can be traced back to 1968 when John Cook, Sr. opened his professional insect collection to the public by appointment, which at the time had been used primarily for employee training at Cook’s Pest Control. https://www.cookmuseum.org
  • Shopping, ha, we wish! (we just drove by because we had a 5 year old with us) along 2nd Ave.
  • Gas and snacks at Buc-ees in Athens, AL. You just have to go see one for yourself.

06 Jul 2021Southern Caricatures on TV00:39:34
We know not to judge a book by it’s cover, but PLEASE do not judge a southerner based on what you’ve seen on TV!
Today we’re discussing the stereotypes that are all wrong and a few that are absolutely right when it comes to how southerners are portrayed on TV. This should be fun!
