15 Oct 2018 | 067 - Natalia Koss Vajello - Activist and Feminist | 01:20:30
Ladies! Please join our Be Bold Facebook Group! Natalia Koss Vallejo is an activist and feminist. And although she’s motivated by her anger, you wouldn’t know it from her demeanor. She’s a diminutive woman with a lion’s roar about the issues she cares about. And she isn’t shy at all about jumping right into sensitive topics. Topics that generally aren’t talked about publicly. In this episode, we talk about how Natalia got involved with politics at a very early age. That involvement, which you’ll hear about, rose out of her difficultly in obtaining an abortion in her late teens. It was at this time that she recognized an unjust and unfair system that affected not only her, but the many women out there in similar situations. This is what I find so amazing and so bold about her. That she was so mature at such a young age to not only recognize this but to also be so motivated to make changes to the system. Her frustration with this experience launched her into work at Planned Parenthood, NARAL and, ultimately, politics. Although this is a topic she passionately talks about, that’s not what actually brought us together. The way Natalia landed on my radar was because of a sexual harassment and workplace misconduct suit (filed by a third party but on behalf of Natalia) against her boss, Bailey Stober. He was, at the time, Chair of the King County Democrats in Washington State. You’ll hear how this all unfolded but, in short, the complaint, again, filed by a third party, resulted in an internal trial against Stober and caused him to not only lose his position as the Chair of the King Country Democrats but also his full-time job at the King County Assessor’s office. This is a guy who said deplorable things to Natalia. Things that shouldn’t be said out loud in the first place let alone by an employer to his employee. (And, again, fair warning that those words are spoken out loud in our conversation so brace yourself.) Natalia and I had been trying to get together for months for this conversation but it took on new urgency after the Senate confirmed Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court. After Christine Blasey Ford bravely came forward (and was basically shut down), I felt it was really important for people to hear Natalia’s story. But you have to understand that on one hand Natalia’s story is a win for women in the workplace but you still have to wonder why this is still tolerated in the workplace and why more women don’t come forward in these situations. I’m so glad Natalia also felt it important to get her story out on the Be Bold Podcast and that she made time to sit down with me just a couple of days before I left for Peru. So with that, please enjoy this conversation with Natalia Koss Vallejo. Connect with Natalia: Links/books/people mentioned Enjoyed this episode? Subscribe then tell a friend! Be Bold,
15 Apr 2019 | 087 ~ Bonnie Crawford - Plus-sized Adventurer | 01:33:26
Bonnie Crawford, along with 19 other women, recently went to Tanzania to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro. Now there are a number of things that make this group quite unusual – bold you might say. First, the group size was 20. That’s a lot of people all attempting a summit. I know because I’ve managed a group of 10 up Kilimanjaro. Second, this was an all-female group and that is really unusual and pretty cool. Finally, what really makes this group of women so unusual and what, you might argue, is the most bold part about their goal, is that they are all plus-sized women. They are women who came together despite of – maybe because of – they are overweight. But they were all determined to not let that stop them and, together, they were motivated to work toward their summit. Bonnie is no stranger to athletic activities and to dedicating herself to a goal. She’s an accomplished Ironman finisher – multiple times over – and she spent more than a year methodically preparing herself for this trip up Kilimanjaro. As Bonnie points out in this conversation, a large percentage of our population is overweight. I don’t want to gloss over this fact nor do I want to pretend that it’s OK that we’ve gotten ourselves into this crisis. But I do want to recognize and give huge props to Bonnie and the women who were part of her group because they are leading by example and advocating for people to hike and embrace other forms of exercise no matter their size. The message here is that you need to start moving no matter where you are in your body size or shape. There may be more obstacles for you – and she addresses some of them – but she and others who are putting themselves out there, not only physically but also emotionally, are an excellent example of overcoming fears and doubts and physical issues to prove what’s possible. With that, please enjoy this conversation with Bonnie Crawford. ***** Support the podcast through Patreon and get access to special audio and written content, be part of a private Facebook group and enjoy other benefits reserved for supporters of the podcast! ***** Have a burning question and want to be featured on a future episode? 22 Jul 2019 | 099 ~ Darcey Steinke, Author, on Lifting the Veil of Shame on Menopause | 01:15:05
Win a copy of Flash Count Diary by subscribing to the She's Bold Podcast newsletter!
Today’s guest is author, Darcey Steinke. Darcey has a new book out called Flash Count Diary: Menopause and the Vindication of Natural Life. Fair warning that this is an adult conversation and may not be for everyone. But it’s an important conversation in that menopause has been traditionally a topic that isn’t often talked about openly. For those going through it, there’s a lot of shame around it because of the sometimes very obvious symptoms – most notably, hot flashes. But it’s also a time of life for women when a lot of emotion and other physical changes can occur. Darcey’s approach is that this is just another chapter in a woman’s life and should be embraced, not necessarily looked upon as a medical condition. Her book and this conversation are so important to how we view menopause and how we can change our language around it to not be something viewed as a “condition” or as a problem to solve. There’s no doubt that you have many women in your life that could benefit from hearing this conversation so please do share it. Let’s get the word out and start thinking about menopause a bit differently. If you’d like to win a copy of her book, Flash Count Diary, sign up for the She’s Bold Podcast newsletter. I’ll simply alert you each time a new episode is released. I’ll give you until the end of the month to sign up for that newsletter and will randomly choose a winner on August 1st amongst all the current subscribers. That will have to be a winner with a US address. (Apologies if you’re out of the country.) 04 Feb 2019 | 078 - Julia Garling - Marathoner, Brain Tumor Survivor, Massage Therapist | 01:26:28
Support the podcast through Patreon and get access to special audio and written content, be part of a private Facebook group and enjoy other benefits only for supporters of the podcast! ***** Today's conversation is with Julia Garling. Julia was diagnosed with a brain tumor at 24. And while that was an awakening for her, it took her some time to go from being a fund manager at a NYC financial institution to a marathoner who’s now completed well over 200 races to date. On the way to that amazing number of marathons, she went through this debilitating illness when the doctor’s suggested she might not ever walk again. Julia is now living a very happy life in Portland, OR where she’s a massage therapist, specializing in massage for runners. She’s also a pacer for races and she’s now on her third time around running marathons in all 50 states. To say that Julia is an inspiration is putting it lightly. Julia didn’t let the words of people in her life, especially her doctors, dissuade her from wanting to accomplish grand things, like walking. Instead, she hung on to the words of people she read about who had overcome adversity. And then she took things in her own hands and completely changed her life. If you know of anyone struggling with a chronic illness or life threatening disease, I ask that you please share this episode with them. Julia’s message of hope and determination is something that everyone should hear and I really believe her story could help others. Have a burning question and want to be featured on a future episode? She’s now a mindfulness specialist and wellness educator (among other things) and helps others optimize their performance while in a high stress environment. Something we could all use right about now. She has a really great approach in terms of how we can best navigate through these trying times. These are simple tips that are accessible to everyone, not just high performers or military personal. One side note - we recorded this a couple of weeks ago and she does mentioning getting outside into nature. For many of us, while we can still go outside and get exercise, actually getting into nature—such as a park or on a trail—that is no longer possible. 17 Jun 2018 | 051 - Roshi Joan Halifax - Buddhist Teacher and Author on socially engaged Buddhism and living a virtuous life without burning out | 00:43:48
Ladies! Please join our Be Bold Facebook Group! Today’s conversation is with Roshi Joan Halifax. You might know of Roshi from her work in the Buddhist community. She’s a Zen Buddhist teacher at the Upaya Zen Center in Santa Fe. But she’s also an anthropologist, she’s an ecologist, a civil rights activist, a hospice caregiver and an author. Her most recent book is Standing at the Edge: Finding Freedom Where Fear and Courage Meet. It seems to me her book couldn’t have come out at a better time. A time when so many of us are experiencing outrage and despair over what’s going on in the world but we want to be helpful and try to make things better. And as you’ll hear, I personally found some wisdom and comfort in her words and suggestions for how to deal with our current situation. Roshi and I met through a mutual friend, Angel Murdock (whom she refers to in this episode). 11 Feb 2019 | 079 - Laura Musikanski - Grassroots Happiness Movement Expert | 01:54:46
Support the podcast through Patreon and get access to special audio and written content, be part of a private Facebook group and enjoy other benefits reserved for supporters of the podcast! ***** Today’s conversation is with Laura Musikanski. Laura is the executive director of the Happiness Alliance. She believes in the importance of data because when you can measure something, you can better manage it and in this case she’s interested in measuring happiness, well-being and the resilience of people and the planet. She has a background in sustainability so that all makes sense. Laura is all about happiness, at least the data behind happiness. She spends her time researching and trying to understand what it is that makes us happy (or not). And how we can make a cultural shift so that we are more focused on happiness not profit. In a time when it’s easy to feel hopeless, she is a self-described “pessimistic optimist.” In other words, she has an optimistic outlook on things but bases her viewpoint in reality—because, as you’ll hear, she’s all about the data. And data is the reality. I went into this conversation having just read some studies about climate change and I was feeling a bit discouraged about how things are going for our planet. But I have to admit that after listening to Laura’s positive outlook on a number of things—and that includes social media, television and even gaming—I felt a bit more hopeful. Again, she’s realistic but she sees a way out of the path we’re headed down. Having been to Bhutan as many times as I have and knowing their policy on Gross National Happiness over Gross National Product, I admit that I’ve always looked at Bhutan as a bit of an anomaly. A tiny country in the Himalayas that’s able to be very thoughtful in terms of their approach to dealing with the rest of the world because they are so small. And it’s much easier to manage or change things when you’re small and growing. And, for the most part, they’ve done a great job at it. But I haven’t ever thought that this kind of approach, this Gross National Happiness, was possible for the rest of the world, particularly the United States. But Laura thinks otherwise. So it’s gotten me thinking a bit differently. Maybe we are on our way to a bit of cultural shift. I guess time will tell. Anyway, I hope this episode gets you thinking about the future and in a positive way. With that, please enjoy this conversation with Laura Musikanski. ***** Have a burning question and want to be featured on a future episode? 24 Sep 2018 | 064 - Sherry Ott - Long term traveler, photographer and blogger | 01:28:40
Ladies! Please join our Be Bold Facebook Group! Today's conversation is with Sherry Ott. Sherry is a long-term traveler, a blogger and a photographer. As she says, her one goal in life is to make you wish you were somewhere else. Over 11 years, she’s lived in Vietnam, hiked the Annapurna Circuit with her dad, drove 10,000 miles from London to Mongolia in the Mongol Rally, she’s walked across Spain on the Camino de Santiago, kayaked in Antarctica, and drove an auto rickshaw across India for charity. When we spoke last year, she was in Denver checking it out and considering making it her home base, which she subsequently did. She is still seeking epic adventures to intriguing places in order to challenge herself and inspire people to overcome their fears and reap the benefits of travel but she now does this from Colorado where she now explores the mountains and fosters kittens. She’s got a pretty big following so you might already know her but if not, she writes about her travel lifestyle and her around the world adventures on Ottsworld.com and her social media channels. In this conversation, we talked about what it was like for her to take a “career break” thinking that she was going to travel for a year which then turned into more than a decade. Along the way she turned those travels into a lifestyle and into work as a digital nomad. Although it sounds quite sexy, she admits there is downside to being on the road for so long including the stress of having to make so many logistical plans and figuring out where she’s going to sleep every night. Not to mention the loneliness that comes with it. We also talk about how the tools and technology have changed over the years and how they’ve made being a digital nomad possible. Sherry shares some great insight into her lifestyle and I know you're going to love this conversation! ______ By the way...I’d love to hear your feedback! Send me a note at beth@beboldpodcast.com and let me know what you think. You can also leave voice feedback or ask a question by calling 877-280-5170. 26 May 2020 | 128 ~ Q&A - Dealing With Travel During a Pandemic (Part 2) | 01:03:27
Enjoy these uplifting and positive conversations? Support the podcast through Patreon and get access to special audio and written content, be part of a private Facebook group (ladies only) and enjoy other benefits only for supporters of the podcast! ***** As you may know, over these past couple of months, the podcast has taken a bit of departure from my usual long-form, in-person conversations with guests. Instead, I’ve been addressing different aspects of dealing with this pandemic and recording (remotely) episodes that are a bit shorter. If you go back, you can hear how to be happy during a pandemic, how to stay fit, how to journal, how to boost your immune system. All sorts of useful info to help you get through this trying time. This week is yet another slight departure. You’ll recall that a few weeks ago I shared a Q&A about travel that was recorded with “my” tour people via Zoom. I invited past and future WanderTours participants to join me so that I could answer their questions about travel. Well, I had a second call with my tour people on May 5 and I wanted to share that conversation here as well. In this Q&A session, I start out by giving some behind the scenes info about how things work with WanderTours—and why the company is in such good financial health. We also talked about what might happen if a person were to get stuck at a destination, we talked about the best time to purchase travel insurance, and there was even a question about my races that I was to run this year (and how my approach to those is how we all might consider approaching our circumstances right now). Please enjoy this Q&A episode that is all about travel. ***** Have a burning question and want to be featured on a future episode? Call 877-280-5170 and leave a message or email me here.

17 Apr 2018 | 045 - Angela Shen, Founder & CEO of Savor Seattle Food Tours on building a business, being creative and following your passion | 01:33:29
Ladies! Please join our Be Bold Facebook Group! "I realized why I was put on this earth is to be a spark for other people. To be that visionary, to drive with my passion and to bring other people along with me." - Angela Shen This week’s guest is Angela Shen. Angela is the Founder and CEO of Savor Seattle Food Tours. Our paths crossed many years ago when we used to get together for these semi-regular brainstorming sessions with a half dozen or so CEOs of local tour companies. We would get together at a coffee shop or over breakfast every couple of months and talk through challenges that we might be having with our business and others would have input. I was always in awe of how focused and directed Angela was (and she still is) in terms of her business. And after getting to know her much better through this conversation, I can see why she is so impressive. She has an academic background that’s played a part in her success but she’s also really creative and, perhaps more importantly, she’s got this passion for what she does and her life goal is to inspire others. During our Seattle Culinary Tours, we take this fantastic walk through Pike Place Market with one of her guides from Savor Seattle. And these guides are always just so much fun and super knowledgeable. I now get that they are either infused with Angela energy or she has just the right radar to find people who are equally as passionate about food that she is. In this conversation, you’ll hear about Angela’s background growing in up a tiny town in Minnesota with her entrepreneurial immigrant parents. She knew that being an entrepreneur was her path but she didn’t just dive right in. She was smart about it and figured out a way to gain as much knowledge as possible about business and branding before moving to Seattle and starting her own business. But as she was growing this business, all while being a wife and mom to two kids, she had a health issue that pushed her over the edge and forced her to take a really honest look at her business and she started to question what it was that made her happy. Basically she realized that working 80 hours a week was not sustainable. She took a good look at her life and then made some decisions (which includes solo travel) about what it was going to take to be happy. Ultimately she feels like 99% of people are going to look at some of those decisions and judge her for making them. In other words, they are quite unpopular for a mom with two kids. What it comes down to is that she’s going against numerous stereotypes including what it means to be a woman (and a Chinese woman at that) and also a mother of two. I really admire Angela for having the strength to make these decisions in order to be her best self. Because if she’s not showing up to be the best Angela that she can be, she’s doing a disservice to everyone—family, friends and colleagues. You’re gonna really like this conversation. 01 Oct 2018 | 065 - Yungchen Lhamo - Tibetan Singer | 01:29:33
Ladies! Please join our Be Bold Facebook Group! This week’s conversation is with Tibetan singer, Yungchen Lhamo. Meeting Yungchen in person was what I imagine meeting the Dalai Lama must be like. She’s a quiet, soft-spoken person who gives you all of her focus and attention. She’s undistracted. She’s present. And she is so incredibly sweet. Everything she does is from the heart. And everything she does is for the benefit of others. That’s something you hear about quite frequently in Buddhism, doing things for the benefit of others, but you don’t come across many people who are actually putting this into practice. You know, in our culture, we so rarely see this that it’s almost difficult to get used to you. But hopefully you’ve come across someone in your life who’s similar to Yungchen in that, they are so at peace that you want to be more like them. You want that peacefulness for yourself. You see them as a happy person and you want that. I wasn’t expecting this when I connected with her online and requested that we speak for the podcast. I really didn’t have any expectation of what she would be like in person. I only knew that I really wanted to meet and chat with someone whose voice could be so pure that it brings me to tears. To say the least, it was a great honor for me to spend time with her and chat with her at her sister’s home in Queens. Yungchen’s name means Goddess of Melody and Song and this was given to her shortly after her birth. And she’s definitely lived up to this name. It’s worth noting that she isn’t a political person and she made that clear before we recorded that she didn’t want to talk about politics or about her departure from her home country. Instead she wanted to focus on the work that she’s been doing. And that work, in addition to singing, includes her non-profit, the Yungchen Lhamo Charitable Foundation. This organization is dedicated to improving the welfare of all human beings in need. Specifically, it focuses on improving and empowering the lives of Tibetan women and children, the mentally ill, the disabled and the homeless. The One Drop of Kindness project that is part of the Yungchen Lhamo Charitable Foundation. It facilitates empathy, respect, compassion and recognition for others. And she has that in spades. There was a Newsweek article from a few years ago that talks about a play that she organized called You Are Beautiful, I Am Beautiful. It features 13 residents of a homeless shelter in her hometown. In the article she talks about how, in Tibet, people don’t talk about mental illness. As in, it’s not a thing. But what she says in this article is we are all sick in different ways. And that’s a very Buddhist insight, that we are all delusional. In other words, it’s a way of looking at the world to realize we should be compassionate toward everyone because we all have our struggles. So in this conversation, we talk about how she left her home in Tibet and went to India and then on to Australia. She talks about her assimilation into the Australian culture and ultimately the culture here in the U.S. And she has some really fun stories about trying to fit in and understand her neighbors and the culture. We also talked about how her musical career took off when she was heard in Australia and was asked by Peter Gabriel to perform at WOMAD, the world music and dance festival. She was actually the first person from Tibet to perform at WOMAD. She released a CD for the event and that ended up winning an Aria Award (and that’s the Australian equivalent of the Grammys). At the end of our conversation, I asked her to sing a bit so you’ll hear her beautiful singing voice. It’s very much in the traditional style of the Himalayas so unless you’re already familiar with this kind of music, it may be a bit different for you. After we recorded, I talked to Yungchen about the possibility of coming to Seattle for a concert. If you’re at all interested in attending a performance by her, send me a note at beth@beboldpodcast.com and I’ll keep you posted on those details. You can also use that email address to send me feedback or you can call my feedback and question line at 877-280-5170. On future episodes, I’ll be answering your questions that are left at that number. With that, please enjoy this conversation with the incomparable Yungchen Lhamo.

30 Jul 2018 | 057 - Paula Froelich, Badass Journalist and Traveler on women's travel, travel writing and being a responsible citizen and traveler | 01:27:17
Ladies! Please join our Be Bold Facebook Group! My guest today is Paula Froelich. When Paula was the Deputy Editor for Page Six of the NY Post, Keith Olbermann named her “Worst Person of the Year.” Keith, for those of you who don’t know, is a sports and political journalist. All you need to do is Google Paula Froelich and Keith Olbermann to find out what went down with their online spat a number of years ago. Anyway, Paula wears this badge with honor and includes it at the top of the About page on her website which is A Broad Abroad.com. Along with that distinguished title (worst person of the year), she also lists the fact that Time Magazine named her Person of the Year three times (in 1975, 2006 and 2011). And perhaps equally as wonderful (insert snark) her website quotes our current president as saying, “Paula Froelich knows what she is talking about.” All this is to say that you know from the get go that Paula’s got a good sense of humor, especially when it comes to Paula. In our conversation today, you’ll hear the story about how Paula and I met which was very memorable for me. That encounter and the story around it pretty much sets the tone of the conversation and also exemplifies what Paula is all about. And when you hear that, you’ll understand why I was so eager to chat with her for the podcast. Paula and I hit upon a variety of topics including her very early interest in travel which goes back to the third grade. But she’s also got some keen observations about women and travel and why many of us travel and what she’s learned about herself and how she approaches her trips. I don’t want to say too much more but in short I think that everyone should have a Paula in their life. She’s a truth teller and she doesn’t hold back, for better or worse (and I fully admit I love it). I hope you enjoy today’s conversation as much as I enjoyed sitting down with Paula Froelich. 01 Oct 2019 | 105 ~ Danielle Bogardus ~ Philanthropist and Entrepreneur | 01:54:44
Today’s conversation is with Danielle Bogardus. Danielle is a philanthropist and an entrepreneur. She’s the Founder, President and Board Director of Connect-3, which she started in 2014. Connect-3 assesses the educational, waste management and water needs in developing communities and empowers the local people by helping them find solutions to the identified issues. The program started in Peru where Danielle was doing undergraduate work with the University of Washington. She’s now working in Ethiopia and plans to broaden this program to other communities around the globe. All of this is pretty remarkable. But what is even more remarkable is that she’s just 23. I have a lot of inspirational women on this podcast but I can’t say that I’ve ever met someone quite like Danielle. I just don’t know how someone so young has such a mature, well-rounded view of the world and so much forethought and compassion to dedicate her time to bettering the world. And I’ll fully admit that that might say more about me than about Danielle because, as I say in the podcast, I just didn’t have her level of maturity at 23. So big big kudos to her. There are some great ideas that others have shared so please join us! ***** Today’s guest is Janet Rhoton. Janet’s been a mental health professional for 40 years and has worked in a variety of capacities, as you’ll hear in this episode. And this kind of death has been a concern to me since this whole virus thing started to go down. I’m so concerned about how people are going to make their way through this situation when people are feeling so much fear and uncertainty and we have a crashing economy. While Janet and I were corresponding with each other about our friend’s passing, I started to realize that with her deep background in the field of mental health, she could really offer some great feedback and information to listeners. This health crisis is affecting everyone in one way or another. And, as Janet says, we’re already seeing a rise in mental health issues that are being triggered by or are a direct result of what’s going on right now. And we’re going to see those issues far and wide, from health care and other essential workers dealing with PTSD, to those in the service industry who feel pressure to work in unsafe environments just to keep their jobs, to those who have had to remain in abusive homes during the lockdown to those struggling financially. It’s going to be rough for a long time to come. I hope this episode with Janet helps either those in need of help now or in the future or helps you to identify someone who may need help. This is a time when we all have to be watching out for each other. Janet lists emergency mental health services at the end our conversation (and you can find them below) and I’ll link to those in the show notes as well. With that, please enjoy this conversation with Janet Rhoton. ***** Have a burning question and want to be featured on a future episode? 13 Feb 2020 | 115 ~ Deep Dive with Beth and Chris Fagan | 00:58:47
This week the conversation is a bit different than the usual sit down I have with guests. This week I’ve brought back Chris Fagan so that we could do a deep dive into a topic. Chris, as long-time listeners likely know, is the author of The Expedition which chronicles her adventures when she and her husband walked to the South Pole. Chris and I chatted about that adventure in Episode 88 and, in December, she returned to ask ME questions about my Epic5 runs in Episode 110. Today’s conversation basically spun out of that most recent episode. We had a great chat but realized there were so many other topics we could explore together that we decided to do a Deep Dive. So today you’re going to hear us chatting about how we make decisions when it comes to choosing a challenge, an adventure, a goal, an expedition, whatever you might call it. We talk about the criteria we use to get to that decision and we wander into some other topics as well but all with this central focus of pursuing goals. Now the plan is for Chris and I to get together every so often, perhaps every six weeks or so, and do a deep dive into a topic. If there’s something that you’d like to know more about, here’s a great opportunity. You can send me an email at beth@shesboldpodcast.com and let me know what it is you’d like to hear more about and this doesn’t have to be just about big adventures. We all have our own Everests, we all have our own hurdles. What's yours? Topics we’ll likely cover include dealing with fear, who our mentors are and who inspires us, staying healthy, keeping mental focus, training plans. What would resonate with you? What do you want to know more about? Don’t be shy. Let us know! beth@shesboldpodcast.com With that, please enjoy this conversation with Chris Fagan. ***** Support the podcast through Patreon and get access to special audio and written content, be part of a private Facebook group and enjoy other benefits reserved for supporters of the podcast! ***** Have a burning question and want to be featured on a future episode? 08 Oct 2019 | 106 ~ Beth Whitman with Beth Baker on Why We Run, Music and More | 01:10:51
Today’s conversation is a bit different for several reasons. First, a portion of this episode was initially featured on Beth Baker's podcast, Why We Run. I so enjoyed that conversation that I wanted to include the full-length version here. So in this episode, the tables are turned a bit and Beth Baker is asking ME the questions. But there’s something else that’s a bit different about this episode. It’s recorded while we are running. So you’re going to hear a lot of heavy breathing throughout our conversation. And you’re going to hear ambient noise and us talking about the bunnies and other things going on around us. I wanted to keep that in because that’s what happens when you’re running. You notice things. Beth and I talk about a lot of different things here and there are a ton of links in the show notes with more information. I think there are more links than I’ve ever had to add before. But I think that’ll make for a very informative and interesting listen. Also, not too long after we recorded this I had Beth on the She’s Bold Podcast, that was episode #103 so you can go back and listen to our conversation (not while we were running) so you can learn more about Beth Baker. With that, let’s get right to this conversation with me and Beth Baker. ***** Have a burning question and want to be featured on a future episode? Support the podcast through Patreon and get access to special audio and written content, be part of a private Facebook group and enjoy other benefits reserved for supporters of the podcast! ***** Today's conversation is with Stephanie Zito. I suppose you could say that Stephanie accidentally stumbled into a career that found her living in several countries for long periods of time doing humanitarian work. And even though it wasn’t something she planned, she created this amazing life of living abroad and, as she says, wandering for good. She has spent a good part of her life “in motion” until relatively recently when she finally settled down in Portland to do the humanitarian work that she’s been doing for years while living in other countries. In this conversation, we talk about her early travels and how it started with a study abroad program in London and then grew to travel through Europe and beyond and included another study abroad program in China. She went on to live and work in Thailand and, just when she thought she would come home to the US to settle down, the 2004 tsunami happened in Indonesia. She knew she had to do something to help and was immediately pulled back into her humanitarian work which brought her to Sudan. What was supposed to be a multi-year contract there was cut short after six months when the car she was driving in in Kenya got hijacked and she was held and assaulted. She escaped that harrowing event, took time to recover and then eventually went back to Africa to climb Kilimanjaro. Stephanie now continues working on humanitarian projects and supplements that work with some pretty cool writing gigs that help other people to travel. I know you'll enjoy this conversation with Stephanie Zito. ***** Have a burning question and want to be featured on a future episode? 15 Oct 2019 | 107 ~ Mina Yoo ~ Inventor, Entrepreneur, Author | 01:28:57
Today’s guest is Mina Yoo. Mina is the founder of HeroClip. This is a super handy device that combines a caribiner with a hook so you can take your purse, your backpack, your water bottle, pretty much an endless number of things and hang it on a hook, a tree branch, fence post, pretty much an endless number of things in order to keep your hands free. I actually brought two of them with me to Ireland. You’ll hear Mina describe it and how it came about and it’ll make a lot more sense. Anyway, you’ll hear Mina’s story of how the HeroClip came about and how that experience, being a creator, an inventor, then gave her the idea of her new book which she co-authored with Hilary Meyerson. The book is due out on October 22, and it’s called Be an InventHer: an Everywomen’s Guide to Creating the Next Big Thing. In this conversation, we also talk about the reality of juggling all of this. What it’s like for her to be an overextended parent and the guilt associated with trying to juggle a business, being a wife as well as a mother to two children. And we go into how men are treated differently with regards to juggling the work/life balance and the different societal expectations for women and men. We also talk about taking the leap of faith as Mina did when she left a very secure job as a university professor to jump into the unknown to launch a business. Let’s just say, Mina is super inspirational. With that, please enjoy this conversation with Mina Yoo. ***** Have a burning question and want to be featured on a future episode? 18 Dec 2018 | 074 - Cassandra Overby - Hiker and Author of Explore Europe on Foot | 01:26:49
Limited time! Support the podcast through Patreon and receive a Be Bold bracelet or Be Bold baseball cap! ***** Cassandra Overby is the author of a new book called Explore Europe on Foot. And it is, obviously, all about enjoying Europe through walking. I'm talking anything from day walks to multi-day hikes. This book is pretty awesome. It’s a guide that makes walking through Europe really accessible. When I first heard about the book, I thought it would be interesting to me because Jon and I have talked about doing a hut to hut trip, perhaps in the Alps. But as I dug into Explore Europe on Foot, I realized that Cass is really advocating for a different kind of travel, a different way of thinking about it. And it doesn’t have to include some big hut to hut experience or a multi-mile pilgrimage (although she includes those in the book as well), but it can just be a way to enjoy a slower pace of travel by exploring the countryside on foot wherever you are. She didn’t start out as this kind of traveler, and that’s where her story becomes interesting. She had considered herself a big time traveler until she left on a year-long trip and ended up coming home after just a few months (which was all spent in one place, by the way). And it was then that she realized she was disillusioned by travel. She hunkered down and worked for five years until a couple of things happened that brought her to this book--namely meeting her future husband AND discovering a new way to travel that really lit her up. You’ll hear how her story unfolds in this episode but I think the real key, the real takeaway, is that she made a Bold decision in her life. A change that she did not consider bold at the time. But that decision changed everything for her. Here’s my conversation with Cassandra Overby. Have a burning question and want to be featured on a future episode! 02 Jul 2018 | 053 - Dr. Jannell MacAulay, Leadership and Performance Specialist, Lt. Col, US Air Force retired | 01:23:38
Ladies! Please join our Be Bold Facebook Group! Today’s conversation is with Dr. Jannell MacAulay. Jannell is a mindfulness advocate whose most recent position was as the Director of Human Performance and Leadership. That in itself isn’t what’s so unique about Jannell. What’s unique is that she held this position in an unlikely environment. You see, for the last 20 years she’s been in the Air Force where she recently retired from her post as a Lieutenant Colonel. In the Air Force, she created a pilot program launching a human performance effort from the ground up, this was her idea. Her goal was to create high-performing, mindful, and mission-focused warfighters and families. In her recent retirement now, she serves as a Human Performance consultant for the Air Force. So she’s still working with those folks in this capacity. She has a Masters Degree in Kinesiology (focused in exercise physiology) and she’s got a PhD with work in the field of strategic health and human performance. But that’s not all! She is a certified wellness educator, a yoga instructor, a mindfulness researcher, and she holds a certificate in plant-based nutrition. She’s also a wife, a mother of two, and a combat veteran with over 3,000 flying hours in the C-21, C-130 and a KC-10 aircraft. Jannell says it was her dad who gave her the idea that she could do or be anything when she grew up. And so from a very early age she knew she wanted to be a pilot so she chose the Air Force to get her training. I’m sure you can imagine how difficult it was for her (and really still is for women) in the military. But she says even though she came up against those who were sexist, she persevered. Rather than being bitter or angry (and those are my words), these incidences fueled her passion. She set out to prove something. She talks about how the grit and tenacity she learned in her youth helped her become successful but that was not sustainable—in other words she couldn’t get by by just pushing through all the time. It wasn’t until she hit a pain point and hit bottom before she re-built herself as a mom, a leader and a pilot. And you’ll hear how bottoming out led her to where she is now. It’s now her goal to revitalize healthcare by making changes through the military which she believes will then spill over into the general population. And now as a retired person from the military she can work directly with us mere mortals. What she wants to do is bring a healthier lifestyle to all through mindfulness, meditation, yoga and healthier food choices. You’ll hear about all that in just a moment. Normally, this podcast features long-form, in-person conversations with Bold women. But that requires not only sitting down with these ladies in person but also more normal circumstances when we’re maybe not so distracted by external events. So I am currently recording shorter episodes via Zoom that can provide a bit of helpful guidance as we collectively move through this trying time called a pandemic. Today’s guest is Anna Brones. Anna is many things. She’s a writer, she’s an artist and a documentary producer. And the thread through all of these is that Anna is a creative. I met Anna maybe eight years ago or so and we’ve stayed in touch via Facebook all this time so I’ve been able to watch the growth of all the things she’s involved with. Most recently, something very interesting came across my radar and I really wanted to reach out to chat with her about it. She’s a producer on a documentary that’s just come out called Afghan Cycles. After you listen to this conversation, I want you to go rent this movie – you can find all the ways to do so by going to Afghancycles.com. It’s the story about some very bold women in Afghanistan who are challenging gender issues by the “simple” act of biking. It’s really quite amazing. So of course in this conversation with Anna, we talk about the movie and these bold women bicyclists and the benefits of empowering women – whether in Afghanistan or elsewhere. But we also talk extensively about what it means to be creative. Because she brings thoughtful creativeness to everything she does. So many of the women I have on the podcast are living what I would categorize as a very intentional life. They make very thoughtful decisions when it comes to what it is they do. And Anna is high on the list with regards to that category. Perhaps it’s the way she articulates her thoughts (of course, she’s a writer!) but I was really impressed with how intentionally she lives and I think you’ll clue into that during this episode as well. I know you’ll really enjoy this conversation with Anna Brones.

25 Feb 2020 | 117 ~ Kelly Lewis ~ Women's Travel Entrepreneur | 01:28:23
Today's conversation is with Kelly Lewis. I was really psyched to have the chance to sit down with Kelly. I’ve known her for a long time from the travel world, I even spoke at her conference about seven years ago. But we never had an opportunity to just sit and talk at any length. She just recently moved to Portland and during a trip I made down there, we finally had a long-overdue chat. Kelly is the founder of Women’s Travel Fest. She’s also the author of a guidebook series called Go! Girl Guides and she runs Damesly, a women’s tour company. So as you can imagine, we have a lot of things in common. In this episode we talk about her growing up in Hawaii with little chance to travel off-island, her move to the mainland for college and then getting hooked on travel after she graduated, her years in NYC where she was determined to take it by storm (which she did) as she built her business and her most recent move to Portland (Oregon, that is). We also talk about how she came about building her businesses and why her move to Portland has been so great for her. We recorded this a few weeks ago and she does mention Women’s Travel Fest. I just want to clarify that , WTF is coming up on March 6 – 8 in New York City. So if you’re in New York or can get yourself there, there are still some tickets available for that wonderful event. I’ll link to it in the show notes but you can also just search online for Women’s Travel Fest. Limited time! Support the podcast through Patreon and receive a Be Bold bracelet or Be Bold baseball cap! ***** Today’s guest is Tanya Streeter. Tanya is a world champion freediver. She holds the record, set in 2002, when she dove to a depth of 525 feet. She held that record for both men and women for more than two months but she still holds the women’s record and, again, that was over 16 years ago. The crazy thing is that she managed to secure that record on a day when things didn’t go quite right for her—which she does talk about in this episode—specifically she blacked out right before she was doing the dive. I mean seconds before. I’m not sure that I’ve spoken to anyone whose accomplishment sounds so absolutely petrifying to me. You wanna talk about being bold? As she says, you really need cojones to do something like she’s done. This accomplishment is really off the charts. What I’d love for you to do is listen to this episode, then watch the documentary video (it’s about 50 minutes long) called No Limits and then come back and re-listen to this episode because it will take on new meaning. 12 May 2020 | 126 ~ Laura Musikanski on Staying Happy During a Pandemic | 00:44:32
Enjoy these uplifting and positive conversations? Support the podcast through Patreon and get access to special audio and written content, be part of a private Facebook group (ladies only) and enjoy other benefits only for supporters of the podcast! ***** How are you all dealing with this? It’s kinda crazy to see how we’re all going through this health crisis and how it’s different depending on where you live, what your days are like (are you working overtime or are you sitting idle) and also what stage you are in in your lockdown (if you’re locked down at all!). So, when they say we’re in this together, I don’t feel like that. It’s just all too different for each one of us. And I think most of us are feeling lonelier than ever, right? But I think no matter what phase or stage you’re in, there are some things we can definitely agree with. We’re trying to find happiness, stability and some sort of normalcy each day. And even then, I know there’s guilt with feeling happy right now. We have a small win of some kind and we may not way to celebrate publicly because we know most people aren’t feeling those wins right now. Most people are really struggling. It’s difficult to find happiness and when we feel it, we’re keeping it to ourselves. And I’m not saying that that’s a good thing or a bad thing, it just is. But I think whether you choose to share your happiness or not, we know that happiness comes from within. And whether a crisis is big or small, we do have control over how we respond to it. The question is, how are YOU responding to this virus? Today’s episode is all about happiness. Laura Musikanski has been on the podcast previously on episode #79 which was early last year, early 2019. Laura is the Executive Director of the Happiness Alliance. Her data collecting around this topic was borne out of Bhutan’s philosophy of gross national happiness. She conducts surveys about people’s level of happiness and then dissects that information to better understand what’s happening in communities, universities and groups. And you can take that survey at happycounts.org. So, in this episode, we do talk all about happiness and, specifically, how it relates to Covid-19. Laura shares some of the more recent data she’s collected and the trends that she’s seeing. But she also gets personal with how this health crisis has affected her and how this time has provided her with a chance to examine her own mortality and how she’s at peace with it. At first glance, this may not seem like the most uplifting message but it’s all very Buddhist. This idea of focusing on death and accepting it so that one can live a more fulfilling and mindful life. So please keep that in mind, especially toward the end of this episode when she gets into that message a bit. ***** Have a burning question and want to be featured on a future episode? Enjoy these uplifting and positive conversations? Support the podcast through Patreon and get access to special audio and written content, be part of a private Facebook group (ladies only) and enjoy other benefits only for supporters of the podcast! ***** Today’s guest is Dierdre Wolownick. You might remember Dierdre from episode #83. She is the author of The Sharp End of Life (as well as many other books), she’s the oldest woman to have climbed El Capitan (she happens to have a great teacher, her son Alex Honnold, to thank for that) and she’s a lifelong journaler. I’ve been journaling the majority of my life and, for me, it started nearly 30 years ago when I began traveling. I’ve documented all of these trips I’ve taken but I also journal even when I’m not traveling. And it’s been a wonderful way for me to get my thoughts down during this pandemic. Dierdre and I talk about how journaling can be an excellent way to get to get to know yourself and to help you get through difficult times, such as during a lockdown. But she also talks about how this simple tool can help with other parts of our lives—how there’s a crossover there—and she gives some great tips on how to get started. I hope this inspires you to set pen to paper and start to journal for the first time if you never have done so before or to recommit yourself to it if you’re not already doing it regularly. By the way, you can order a copy of Dierdre’s book, The Sharp End of Life, and get 25% off by going to Moutaineersbooks.org and enter TIMETOREAD (all one word) as the promo code at checkout. 15 Jul 2019 | 098 ~ Dina Bennett - Author and Travel Junkie on being an expat and saying yes | 01:26:48
Today’s guest is Dina Bennett – author, travel junkie and unorthodox, as she says. Dina Bennett landed on my radar years ago when I was sent a copy of her book, Peking to Paris: Life and Love on a Short Drive Around Half the World. This documents her trip as the unlikely navigator in an antique car in a motor rally. That was maybe five or six years ago. Although we did meet briefly at a conference a year or so before her book came out, this was the first time we really got a chance to sit down and chat. And I have to admit I was thoroughly charmed by Dina and so loved this conversation. When we first met, Dina was living in Colorado but has since moved to France where she’s been, for the most part, for the past two years. Dina is the author of two books including Peking to Paris as well as A Travel Junkie’s Diary – both of which I’ll link to below. But Dina is also an ex-pat, a globe-trotter, a navigator, a rancher, a roadtripper and so much more. Perhaps most importantly, to me, she describes herself as someone who more often says yes than no. I could go on but I want to dive into this, because I know you’re going to love this conversation with Dina Bennett. ***** Have a burning question and want to be featured on a future episode? 04 Feb 2020 | 114 ~ Susan Conrad ~ Expedition Paddler, Author and Adventurepreneur | 01:45:27
Today’s conversation is with Susan Conrad. Susan is a kayaker and the author of Inside: One Woman’s Journey Through the Inside Passage. The book, released in 2019, chronicles her 1,200 mile journey that took her north to Alaska along the Inside Passage as she paddled solo in an 18-foot kayak. In our conversation, we talk about the events in her life that came crashing down on her that brought her to the decision to paddle for 66 days alone in her kayak. And how now, 10 years later, she’s going to push the reset button and venture off on a similar journey of the Inside Passage. Susan explains in fascinating detail about the logistics of putting together these trips and we dive into how things have changed not only for her but with technology as she embarks on a new journey this summer. 06 May 2019 | 090 ~ Chris Mackay - Traveler and Co-founder, Crooked Trails | 01:21:00
Chris Mackay and I recorded this with an audience at the Adventure Hub and Winery in Seattle. Not only was this a lot of fun to record live but it gave us a chance to do something a little different, which was to take questions from the audience and answer them on the spot. Chris is a traveler to the core, as you’ll hear in this conversation. I’ve know Chris for probably 10 or more years but had never heard her backstory, which I found really fascinating. Chris was heavily influenced by her mom who was not only a traveler (and took Chris to India when she was 16) but her mom surrounded herself and the family with shamans and Rinpoches and all sorts of interesting, indigenous peoples. Chris’s love of international travel and the natural world, along with her concern about the negative impacts of tourism on culture and the environment, led her to co-found Crooked Trails in 1998. This tour company specializes in community-based tourism – that which focuses on and supports the local cultures. But her concern for the environment has extended well beyond Crooked Trails leading her to co-founded Travelers Against Plastic (TAP), an organization which aims to educate global travelers about the harmful impacts of using disposable plastic water bottles and, instead, encourages us to use alternative methods to consume water while traveling. We get into that and the impact of travel on the environment and cultures in this episode. I know you're really going to enjoy this conversation and I hope you enjoy this live format as well. With that, here's Chris Mackay. ***** Support the podcast through Patreon and get access to special audio and written content, be part of a private Facebook group and enjoy other benefits reserved for supporters of the podcast! ***** Have a burning question and want to be featured on a future episode? 28 Jan 2020 | 113 ~ Sharon Wood ~ Pioneering Climber and Author | 01:16:16
Today’s conversation is with Sharon Wood. Sharon is very unassuming (as Canadians tend to be) yet she has accomplished something pretty incredible. Sharon was not only the first North American woman to summit Mt. Everest but she did it on the West Ridge route. The first thing that’s notable about that, is that this is a route that has never been successfully summitted since. And that was 34 years ago when Sharon was 29. But what is also notable is that she and her group attempted their summit bid without Sherpas – meaning they were on that mountain carrying all their own gear, fixing all their own ropes without support. When you consider how the mountain is being climbed today, you can imagine how incredibly difficult that must have been. But Sharon’s story starts at age 16 when she left home to find adventure in the mountains. And, really, she’s never looked back. Sharon has a new book out called Rising: Becoming the First North American Woman on Everest. And she’s had these years to reflect on that experience and also see how summiting the planet’s tallest mountain has changed in the decades since her summit. In our conversation, we not only talk about what led up to her summit bid but the experience itself as well as what she calls the “aftermath” that occurred post-summit. I just know you’re going to love this conversation with Sharon Wood. ***** Support the podcast through Patreon and get access to special audio and written content, be part of a private Facebook group and enjoy other benefits reserved for supporters of the podcast! ***** Have a burning question and want to be featured on a future episode? 31 Mar 2020 | 121 ~ Sabrina Seher on Staying Fit During a Pandemic | 00:29:28
** If you find yourself struggling and need something to lift you up, the Be Bold Facebook group (for ladies only) has been a wonderful way for us to encourage each other. Normally we post the things we’re doing to Be Bold but over the past few weeks, we’ve been posting each day the things that we’re doing to stay happy and healthy right now. There are some great ideas that others have shared so please join us! ***** I’m going to be doing something a little different for the foreseeable future. As you likely know, I have only ever recorded with my guests in-person. We sit down and chat for in-depth, long-form conversations. But, obviously, that’s just not possible right now. And although I do have a number of these conversations already recorded and ready to go, they just didn’t seem appropriate to release right now. So I’ve decided to pivot a little bit and I’m sitting down (and by that I mean I’m sitting down at my laptop over Zoom) and recording with women who have knowledge and experience in certain fields that can help us through this rough time. The first episode in this new format is with Sabrina Seher. You might remember Sabrina from episode 43. Sabrina is a runner, a race director and a coach and mentor to many many people. She’s a really positive force and is someone who not only leads by example but has the ability to virtually kick your butt to get up off the couch. I wanted to chat with her about the techniques she’s using to encourage her community to stay motivated during this very trying time. I know it’s not easy! To stay motivated. So we all have to work together to lift each other up. One side note--the audio quality on this is not what you might be used to. We’re recording using Zoom right now. I’m checking into some other options but bear with me as I figure out the technical side of this. With that, please enjoy this conversation with Sabrina Seher. ***** Have a burning question and want to be featured on a future episode? 07 May 2020 | 125 ~ Dealing with Travel During a Pandemic | 00:44:10
Enjoy these uplifting and positive conversations? Support the podcast through Patreon and get access to special audio and written content, be part of a private Facebook group (ladies only) and enjoy other benefits only for supporters of the podcast! ***** I’ve got a special treat for you this week. It’s neither my usual long form conversation, nor my temporary method of recording remotely during a pandemic conversation. This is a group Zoom call that I did with some of my tour people. These are folks who have either been on a tour with me or are scheduled to be on a tour in the future. I wanted to make myself available to them to answer any questions that they might have either about WanderTours as a company, about upcoming tours and then just about travel in general. What I did for this podcast episode was extract some of the Q&A’s and kind of stitch them together. It’s a combination of questions that had been sent to me in advance and also questions that came up spontaneously from people on the call. So you’re going to hear some back and forth dialogue here as well as some resources and information that come directly from the community. One thing that you might notice when you listen to this is that there are just as many things that I don’t know compared to what I do know right now. And that is really just the nature of what’s going on in the world right now. But I think the value here is in the questions that people are asking because you might be asking the same ones. And they include questions about the future of travel, flights and if tour companies, hotels and activities are going to be able to weather this crisis as well as lots of questions about travel insurance. And for reference, this was recorded on April 23. I held a second Zoom call this past week, also with past and current tour people, which I may also post in a few weeks. But if YOU are interested in getting on a Zoom call with me, I am going to schedule one that will be more for my community at large—so you don’t have to have taken a tour with me to be included on that one. Just send me a note at beth@shesboldpodcast.com and let me know you’re interested and I’ll get you the details for that. Please enjoy this Q&A episode that is all about travel. ***** Have a burning question and want to be featured on a future episode? 19 Nov 2019 | 108 ~ Robin Layton - Artist, Photojournalist and Filmmaker | 01:06:17
Today’s guest is Robin Layton. Robin is a Seattle-area photographer who has a new book out called The Lake. The book is a culmination of her body of work over a 10-year time period photographing Lake Washington. Now, I say that she’s a photographer, but really, she is so much more than that. Robin started her career as a photojournalist, working at a number of newspapers and really learning her craft there. By the time she was 24, she was honored by LIFE Magazine as one of the top eight photographers in America. She went on to become a photographer to the stars (we’re talking Oprah, Jennifer Aniston and others) and she now finds herself making a living as an artist / photographer and filmmaker. Robin is currently a Nikon Ambassador. You’ll hear all about how her career unfolded during our conversation. It’s obvious that following her passion led Robin to living a successful, fascinating and enriched life. She doesn’t have a formula to help make others successful but it’s evident that being kind and grateful to others as well as true to herself has helped her create this beautiful life that she leads. 25 Jun 2020 | 130 ~ Laureen Nussbaum ~ Author and Holocaust Survivor | 01:21:54
Enjoy these uplifting and positive conversations? Support the podcast through Patreon and get access to special audio and written content, be part of a private Facebook group (ladies only) and enjoy other benefits only for supporters of the podcast! ***** This conversation is with author and holocaust survivor, Laureen Nussbaum. This was recorded in-person almost four months ago, at the end of February. It was one of my last in-person conversations that I had for the podcast prior to the pandemic. Under most circumstances, four months would feel like yesterday. But so much has happened since then that it feels like eons ago. I was all ready to publish this episode in early March but then things just started to shut down, at least here in Seattle. As I re-listened to this conversation during the editing process, Laureen’s description of not being allowed to go outside when she was growing up (as a Jewish person), just hit too close to home for me. For very different reasons, obviously, I understood that feeling of not being allowed out. And, really, a few months ago, we were all getting used to having our freedoms restricted, it was a new concept for us, so to hear someone describe how it was happening to her, was really difficult for me as I suspect it might have been for listeners. So I just didn’t feel like the time was right. Now, with the murder of George Floyd and the spotlight on so many other people of color who’ve been killed in similarly tragic ways, Breonna Taylor, Trayvon Martin, Manuel Ellis here in WA state, as well as other murders, such as Ahmaud Arbery in Georgia, whose killers are only now, months later, being charged, I felt like this was a good time to finally get this episode out. This conversation highlights what happened to Laureen, growing up Jewish in the early years of Hitler’s regime. She knows quite well what systemic racism feels like. By and large, this is Laureen’s story. We talk about her family’s escape from Germany and their time in Amsterdam, and that includes their ties with Anne Frank and her family. Hans Calmeyer, by the way, is credited with saving more Jewish people than Schindler. It’s believed he saved about 3,700 people. In this conversation, there’s hope and there’s optimism. It’s a reminder that even as we move through terrible times—be it a pandemic OR unimaginable injustices thrust upon people of color or other marginalized segments of our population—even with all that, there’s hope. Because there are things we can do to stand up against injustices. In both large and small ways. We can help by simply speaking up. We can help those around us. You’ll hear Laureen talk at the very end of our conversation about our need to protest. I’m sure she never imagined the level of protests that are going on today but I believe that this kind of response is what she had in mind (minus the violence, of course). OK – with that, please enjoy this conversation with Laureen Nussbaum. ***** Have a burning question and want to be featured on a future episode? 20 May 2019 | 092 ~ Vasu Varadhan - Author and Professor of Media Studies at NYU | 01:35:34
Vasu Varadhan is a long-time friend of mine. We figured we’ve known each other for about 35 years. And though we haven’t stayed closely connected over those 35 years, we’ve stayed connected enough so that when I’m in NY or she’s in Seattle, we try to get together and have a laugh and a conversation. Vasu and I met when I was in college and she was visiting for special presentation, it was an event being held at the university that I attended in Pennsylvania. Vasu holds a PhD in Media Studies from NYU where she is currently a member of the faculty at the Gallatin School of Individualized Study. She’s taught a wide range of interdisciplinary seminars on media theory, identity in a multi-cultural world, ancient Indian literature and South Asian literature and we get into some of that in this conversation. I was really eager to chat with Vasu because she recently published her first book, On My Own Terms: A Journey Between Two Worlds. This is a memoir that chronicles not only the early years of her life which included her struggles as an immigrant, first growing up in the US living in many ways a very traditional Indian life and then moving to India in her early teens (but there she was a very Americanized Indian) but also her arranged marriage which took place at the age of 16. When you listen to this conversation, I think you’ll come away with a better understanding of the immigrant experience both for older and younger generations. But we cover many topics here including how she began work on her book shortly after the death of her eldest son in the 9/11 attack on The World Trade Center. Please enjoy this conversation with Vasu Varadhan.

17 Sep 2018 | 063 - Radha Agrawal - Daybreaker CEO and Author on Social Entrepreneurship and Building Community | 01:30:00
Ladies! Please join our Be Bold Facebook Group! Today’s conversation is with Radha Agrawal. Radha is…well, Radha is a pretty freaking amazing young woman. She’s probably best known for having founded Daybreaker, an early morning dance party that’s currently in 25 cities and has a half a million people in the community. Basically, about once a month Daybreaker takes place in each of these 25 cities. These consist of a one-hour yoga session, if you so choose, that’s followed by two hours of dance. All this takes place early enough in the morning that you can participate and then go to work. Think of it like a very scaled down, early morning version of Burning Man where 300 – 600 people get jiggy with it. Where there might be a theme, people might come in costume and basically they’re just completely letting loose before they head to their jobs. I suggest that while you’re listening to this episode, maybe you can just pop over to the Daybreaker website and see if the city nearest you is on their list. And if, not there’s probably a way you can contact them and request (or even start one yourself) for the city nearest you. Anyway, what grew out of Daybreaker is Radha’s new book, Belong: Find Your People, Create Community, and Live a More Connected Life. That kinda says it all. As you’ll hear in our conversation today, she said she was getting asked a few times a week how she was able to build her Daybreaker community, so she wrote the book in response to this question that kept coming up. But she didn’t just write a book, in my opinion, she created a piece of beautiful art. Seriously, it’s one of, if not THE most beautifully designed books I’ve every come across. And it was her handiwork as you’ll hear in this conversation. She’s the one that actually designed it. Even though we call ourselves connected (and by that I mean through technology), we have become a very disconnected culture and world. With Daybreaker, Radha has addressed this current epidemic of us being so disconnected from one another. What’s she done is not only built a community but, through Belong (her book) she’s created a road map for us all to build our own communities. As you hear on all the conversations here on the Be Bold Podcast, there’s much more to a person’s story than what they are currently working on. With Radha, you’ll hear in our conversation about her life story that takes her from Canada, to school in upstate NY to work in the finance world in the Big Apple to “travel” documentaries to vegetables to underwear and, finally, to community building. With that, enjoy this conversation with Radha Agrawal! ____ By the way...I’d love to hear your feedback! Send me a note at beth@beboldpodcast.com and let me know what you think. You can also leave voice feedback or ask a question by calling 877-280-5170. I’d love to grow our community by featuring you and your questions on future episodes.

18 Feb 2020 | 116 ~ Lia Ditton ~ Ocean Rower Extraordinaire | 01:23:45
Today’s guest is ocean rower, Lia Ditton. I chatted with Lia back in episode #80 almost exactly one year ago. I highly recommend going back and listening to that episode if you haven’t already hear it or if you did hear it and want a refresher, it’s going to give you a lot of background on today’s episode. I wanted to circle back around with her because she is about to embark on a pretty incredible journey. She’s planning to be the first person to row across the North Pacific from Choshi, Japan to San Francisco. She had originally intended to do that row this year but she’s pushed that until next year and this year she will be rowing from San Francisco to Hawaii – getting herself and her boat part way to her start in Japan. When she completes this trip from Japan, she will have been the first person to have done so. In this episode she describes her most recent training rows that she’s done that have put her up close and personal with sharks as well as close encounters with other boats—the captains of some of these boats likely thought she needed rescuing (which was actually quite far from the truth). But in these training rows she had some harrowing experiences which she goes into in some great detail. She’s planning on departing for her San Francisco to Hawaii row sometime between mid-April and mid June (it will all be weather dependent) and you can follow her at rowliarow.com. 18 Jun 2019 | 095 ~ Beth Jusino - Unlikely Thru-Hiker and Author on Walking the Camino De Santiago | 01:40:13
Today's conversation is with Beth Jusino. As a way to unplug from what she calls 24/7 screentime, Beth Jusino and her husband, Eric, walked 1,000 miles of the Camino over 79 days. Beth was not an athlete, she wasn’t super fit, she wasn’t even a traveler. She just knew she had to find a way to unplug and get away from her devices. And what she found was a world where people actually look each other in the eye, and they connect, and they share stories. She basically did a couch to 1,000 miles. Although she did a lot of research, she didn’t train at all and she packed her backpack the night before she left. Now that’s not to say that that’s an ideal way to take on an adventure, but it certainly goes to show ya that pretty much anything is possible. There’s a lot of inspiration in her story and the fact that she is an average person, like women we all know. Yet, something clicked for her, she changed her mindset and took on something that she hadn’t previously even considered possible. 26 Apr 2018 | 046 - Advocate and Adventurer Allison Dvaladze on sailing, travel, women's advocacy and suing Delta Airlines | 01:49:12
Ladies! Please join our Be Bold Facebook Group! "If you have the opportunity and the ability, you have the obligation." ~ Allison Dvaladze We don’t get into the details of what happened (you can Google her for more information) but, in short, let’s just say the flight attendants weren’t equipped to handle the incident. For the past two years, Allison has been trying to get legislation passed that will require airlines to implement procedures when occurrences like this happen. And they happen more often than you might think—it’s just that they often aren’t reported so there are no statistics about it. With the help of Washington State Senator Patty Murray, Allison has had some luck in getting a bill passed on the House floor. And you’ll hear more about that and how it all came about during our conversation. That alone would have been an interesting conversation with Allison. But before I reached out to her and invited her on the podcast, I did a bit of research and discovered that her advocacy for women ran much deeper than this one issue. Allison is currently the Director of Global Strategy, Partnerships and Advocacy at the University of Washington. What she does is travel the world to help build partnerships and networks that support advocates of women's cancers, specifically breast cancer, and this is often in low-resource settings such as developing nations and communities. Her work is fascinating and she gets into some of the details of it in this conversation. But what is really striking is how she got to this point in her life, meaning her early travels and adventures and how her natural inclination to help women not only has been a thread in her work life but in her volunteer work and her now advocacy for women travelers. One other little thing...to top it all off, she’s part of an eight-woman team who will be sailing from Port Townshend, WA to Juneau, Alaska this summer. That’ll be 750 miles on a sail boat during this adventure race. So yeah, she’s pretty amazing on many fronts. Connect with Allison: Cancer support: Other items mentioned: Connect with me:

19 Mar 2019 | 083 ~ Dierdre Wolownick - Author, Adventurer...and Alex Honnold's (Free Solo) Mom | 01:15:17
Win a pair of Jaybird Tarah bluetooth headphones ($100 value)! It's SO easy to enter! See details here. ***** Today’s conversation is with Dierdre Wolownick. While you may not recognize her name, you'll likely recognize the name of her son – Alex Honnold. In the off chance you don’t know who Alex is, he’s the guy who free solo’d El Capitan and was featured in the movie Free Solo. I won’t go into any more detail than that but, if you haven’t already, you should see this Oscar-winning movie, Free Solo – and Dierdre is in the movie by the way. So, yeah, Dierdre is Alex’s mom. And that fact might be interesting right there. But Dierdre has her own interesting story to share. She’s a woman who speaks multiple languages and who only speaks French to her two children. Because she’s passionate about music and saw the need for it in her hometown, she founded an orchestra in West Sacramento, CA. She began running when she was in her mid-50’s after telling herself all her life that she was not a runner (sound familiar?). She’s the author of numerous books with another one coming out in May called The Sharp End of Life: A Mother’s Story. If all that wasn’t inspirational enough? She began climbing when she was 57-years-old so she could better understand what it was that her son was doing. And eventually Alex led her up El Capitan after free solo’ing it himself when Deirdre was 66. She has a lot more to do and figures she’ll need to live to at least 125 to accomplish these many things. Dierdre is a fascinating woman. She really lives by her own rules (I mean, how many parents do you know that only speak to their children in a foreign language?). And what living by your own rules means is that you can accomplish a great many things. I know you’ll be inspired by this conversation with Dierdre Wolownick. ***** Have a burning question and want to be featured on a future episode? 26 Aug 2020 | 138 ~ Liz Grantham ~ CEO, Entrepreneur and Founder of TheOptimal.Me | 01:30:48
Today’s guest is Liz Grantham. Liz is the founder of The Optimal Me, a fitness app created specifically for those over 50 and it focuses on getting people functionally fit with exercises that take just 15 minutes a day. Liz and I dive deep into the importance of movement as we age. And not just moving (like me, with running) but by doing exercises that help with every day movement--like lifting your luggage into the overhead bin of a flight. As Liz points out, 2.8 million people die each year from obesity. 2.8 million! But no one is talking about that (likely because it’s not contagious). But it’s for this very reason that she’s motivated to help people keep their mobility and stay healthy well into late life. While it wasn’t her intention to create an app that would keep us in shape during a pandemic, the timing of this is quite good as we should all be staying active and functional and staying happy and fit so that when we get out of this, we’re in the same or better shape than when this whole thing started. I think you’ll really enjoy this conversation (not least of all because of her very charming South African accent). With that, please enjoy this conversation with Liz Grantham. ***** Have a burning question and want to be featured on a future episode? 27 Aug 2019 | 101 ~ Nichole Doane ~ Trauma Nurse and Survivor on Her Near Death Experience | 01:32:34
Today’s guest is Nichole Doane. Nichole is a trauma nurse at Harborview Medical Center here in Seattle. Harborview, as many people in my neck of the woods knows, is THE trauma center for the Pacific Northwest. It’s where you want to be taken in the case of a traumatic injury or burn. But I didn’t want to speak to Nichole because of her work as a trauma nurse. Instead, it was because of an accident she had while canyoneering. This near-fatal fall changed the trajectory of her life. Nichole was on a canyoneering trip in August of 2017 when she fell about 60 feet. What happened to her in the minutes leading up to the fall and the hours following it, when she was awaiting a rescue, was nothing short of a miracle. It’s really incredible to me the way she processed what was going on—and then, frankly—lived to tell about it. Since her accident and recovery, Nichole is now spending her time helping those in crisis—as a speaker by helping others through traumatic experiences and by bringing to light the PTSD that happens within the community of public servants. You’ll understand what exactly I mean as you listen to our conversation. In short, I’ve never heard anyone explain their near-death experience quite like Nichole does. I’m moved by the way she’s taken that experience and turned it into such a force for good. With that, please enjoy this conversation with Nichole Doane. ***** Have a burning question and want to be featured on a future episode? 10 Mar 2020 | 119 ~ Anastasia Allison ~ Entrepreneur, Musician and Adventurer | 01:43:29
Today’s conversation is with Anastasia Allison. Anastasia is a woman of many talents and interests. Early in her career she worked as a park ranger (a dream job for her) and then as a law enforcement officer for BNSF railway. She had a near death experience in a car accident that turned everything around for her. It was then that she stopped letting her fears get the best of her and it was at that point that she opened up to new possibilities including her work now as an entrepreneur with a very innovative, yet much needed product for women hikers. Fair warning that we dive right into a topic that isn’t usually discussed publicly but is at the core of her company, Kula Cloth. Anastasia Allison is a really thoughtful, reflective human being and I know you’re going to love this conversation with her… ***** Have a burning question and want to be featured on a future episode? 02 Sep 2018 | 061 - Seattle Seahawks Nutritionist, Michele Clarke-Mason on supplements, superfoods, high-impact sports and recovery | 01:26:15
Ladies! Please join our Be Bold Facebook Group! Today’s conversation is with Michele Clarke-Mason. As the nutritionist for the Seattle Seahawks, Michele has been called their secret weapon. She’s the one giving them nutritional guidance to help them perform better on the field and recover more quickly off the field. I’m going to first admit I’m not a huge team sports fan, except when the Seahawks are in the playoffs, of course. So my interest in speaking with Michele wasn’t from a football perspective per se. But there were a couple of things that intrigued me about her and her position that I did want to explore. First, it was from an athletic perspective and how she works with elite athletes to get them to eat healthier and also help them to recover from what is a high impact sport. Second, I was really curious how she navigates being one of only a handful of women in a mostly male organization. I mean can you imagine being in a building of 140 men, probably super macho men, and having to oversee what they put on their plate? Despite my lack of knowledge and, maybe, enthusiasm for football, I was still really fascinated to get a peek behind the scenes of the Seahawks organization and the NFL as it relates to nutrition, supplements, sexism and just generally her take on helping them perform better. I think one of the really interesting things that she touches upon is that in many cases there is little data to support some outcomes, let’s just say in terms of something like recovery, yet the anecdotal evidence is enough that she can make recommendations and see improvement. We also talk about intermittent fasting, her favorite cheat foods AND she takes questions from listeners about what not to eat, alternative programs that the Seahawks may or may not follow, saturated fat and how to avoid arthritis. Please enjoy this conversation with Seattle Seahawks Nutritionist, Michele Clarke-Mason. ____

20 Mar 2018 | 042 - Geraldine DeRuiter of the Everywhereist on Mario Batali, travel and blogging | 01:23:36
Ladies! Please join our Be Bold Facebook Group! Today's guest is Geraldine DeRuiter. Geraldine is an unlikely travel blogger. Unlikely because she’s, well let’s just say, she’s an uncomfortable traveler. You’ll hear why she’s not the best of travelers during our conversation. She’s best known for her blog, the Everywhereist. Her writing has been called “consistently clever” by TIME Magazine and “dark and hilarious” by the New York Times. Her blog post, “I Made the Pizza Cinnamon Rolls from Mario Batali’s Sexual Misconduct Apology Letter” received more than a million views. And if you haven’t already read it, you must. I’ll link to it below. In addition to chatting about her unlikeliness as a travel blogger and her love for baking and “real” cinnamon rolls, we chatted about aging, living to 140 years old, how she ended up standing at the airport in her underwear and how her blog and twitter posts have turned more political since the November 2016 elections. I had so many other questions for Geraldine but I was under a bit of a time constraint and we couldn’t dive into a couple of subjects I was so looking forward to chatting about including her brain tumor experience. But we both agreed that we need to sit down again to chat so look for a Part II with Geraldine hopefully in the not too distant future. 29 May 2019 | 093 ~ Helen Thayer - Explorer and Adventurer | 01:57:07
Today's conversation is with Helen Thayer. I don’t think you can listen to this conversation and not be affected, changed or inspired on some level. It’s very likely that you’ll make different decisions today and going forward after you listen to today’s episode. I’ve known of Helen for, gosh, at least 20 years but likely much longer than that. She’s been on my radar for such a long time because some of the really amazing things she’s accomplished. And even though she lives in the Seattle area and we’ve been in touch over the years—like via email, I’m fairly certain this was the first time we met in person. But our sit-down was like slipping into a conversation with an old friend. Someone with whom I have common interests and am on the same wavelength but also someone whom I really admire and can look to for inspiration. So who’s Helen Thayer? Though she’s not a fan of promoting herself as the first person to do this or that, there’s no denying her accomplishments. At age 50, she was the first woman to travel solo to the magnetic North Pole in an unsupported expedition, meaning she pulled all of her own supplies and gear. She ventured solo to the South Pole on a trek where she had to abandoned the trip just shy of completing the journey. Along with her husband, Bill, she walked across the Sahara on a 4,000-mile trade route (and where she had to be led by a local through 600 miles of landmines). She walked 1,600 miles across the Gobi Desert in Mongolia, she kayaked 2,200 miles in the Amazon and, beginning on her 80th birthday – her 80th birthday – she walked across Death Valley. She was named One of the Great Explorers of the 20th Century by the National Geographic Society. Helen was influenced by not only her very athletic parents but by Sir Edmund Hillary (Ed as she calls him). And though most of us don’t have those kinds of people surrounding us and influencing us, we do have Helen. She’s now 81 and, as you’ll hear, she has many more projects ahead of her that keep her going and excited. I could go on about Helen and her accomplishments but I’d rather this conversation with her speak for itself. Please enjoy this conversation with Helen Thayer. ***** Support the podcast through Patreon and get access to special audio and written content, be part of a private Facebook group and enjoy other benefits reserved for supporters of the podcast! ***** Have a burning question and want to be featured on a future episode? 10 Sep 2018 | 062 - Sue Hollis - author, motorcyclist, entrepreneur and adventurer on riding, building a business and overcoming fear | 02:12:37
Ladies! Please join our Be Bold Facebook Group! You are in for a real treat today. This is a long conversation with a woman whom you’ve likely never heard of before but I can guarantee you will want to meet and hang out with her after you listen to this episode. I’m not sure if it’s her accent, which is beyond charming, or it’s her self-deprecating way or it’s her keen observations about herself and others. It’s probably a combination of all of those. But whatever it is, you’re going to be pulled into a conversation that is just gonna make you feel good and, hopefully, it’s gonna make you think differently about what’s possible for yourself. So, this conversation is with Sue Hollis. Sue is an Australian but she currently splits her time between the land down under and Canada. It was my very good fortune that she happened to be in Canada this summer and was willing to take a ride down here to Seattle on her beloved motorcycle, Voodoo, as she calls it, to record. Anyway, Sue just released a book called Riding Raw: The Journey from Empty to Full which chronicles her three-month ride through North America (mostly in the western US and parts of Canada) on her 1000 CC BMW superbike. As a rider myself, I can attest to the fact that 1000 cc’s is a big bike, especially for a petite woman like Sue. But she took on this big trip after feeling like her “perfect” world wasn’t so perfect and she needed a drastic change to reclaim her life and find, what she calls, heart success. She really has a wonderful story to tell about her rise in the corporate travel world and how she always felt that she was going to be found out as a fraud at what she was doing (and that came with a lot of stress and fear). She went on to build a multi-million dollar business but still felt empty (hence the sub-title of the book, from empty to full). As you can imagine, she’s got some great stories to tell, not only about her past life in her career but also about her journey on Voodoo. And there are great lessons in here for all of us, not just for unhappy corporate execs or motorcycle riders. Some of the lessons she shares are really accessible to us all. And that’s probably what makes this conversation so much fun and interesting. So with that, here’s my conversation with Sue Hollis. ____ By the way...I’d love to hear your feedback! 23 Jul 2018 | 056 - Latoya Snell - The Running Fat Chef on being fat and fit, and dealing with depression and miscarriages | 01:51:45
Ladies! Please join our Be Bold Facebook Group! Latoya Snell is a runner. She’s actually a self-described fat runner. A term she uses and embraces. Latoya started running on a lark, really because of an agreement she made with a friend. But once she started, she was hooked. Running literally changed her life. She was initially excited by having lost 100 pounds through running and getting fit. But what happened was she ultimately realized that just because she was thinner it didn’t make her any happier. So she decided to embrace her weight and keep running. As a fat runner, showing people that one could be fit and fat, she has become an inspiration to many. She started getting national attention with features and mentions in magazines and online and now has sponsors seeking her out. It’s not just that Latoya is a fat runner or that she’s OK with the word “fat,” those aren’t the only reasons I consider her Bold. It goes far beyond that. She’s also really quite open and honest about many things, as you’ll hear. This includes her struggles with health issues, her depression, and her miscarriages. She really is an open book when it comes to the rough times that she’s been through and that in itself is Bold in my book. I hope you enjoy this conversation with the beautiful Latoya Snell. 01 Sep 2020 | 139 ~ Stasia Honnold ~ Human Powered Adventurer | 01:36:08
Today’s guest is Stasia Honnold. Stasia is an adventurer. But not just any kind of adventurer – she’s a human-powered adventurer. So what does that mean? In short, she bikes, she hikes and she runs. And rarely does she use a car do to any of those. She’s a woman who makes up her own adventures and figures out how to execute on them with lots of planning and organizing. As Stasia says, she lives by a set of values and makes her life choices based on these values – doing no harm – and in doing so, she’s living simply as well as on her own terms. It was my intention to highlight Stasia for being Stasia. And not mentioning her family ties because she deserves recognition in her own right for what she does. But talk about her family came out naturally during our conversation. And what I’m talking about is the fact that her brother is Alex Honnold, who free solo’d up El Capitan and who you can learn all about the Academy Award winning movie, Free Solo. Her mom, by the way, is Dierdre Wolownick and I’ve had Dierdre on the podcast a couple of times. That was episodes number #127 and #83 so you can go back and listen to those to get a fuller picture of the family. Katie Arnold is a contributing editor at Outside Magazine where she writes the column called Raising Rippers (which is about bringing up adventurous kids). She’s also written for The New York Times, Men’s Journal, ESPN, Marie Claire, Runner’s World, Elle and Sunset. Katie is also a very accomplished ultrarunner - having won the very difficult Leadville 100 Run as well as a host of other long-distance races. And it’s a befitting column for someone who considers herself to be an Outdoor Junkie. While she had done a number of things over the years that tested her confidence and really forced her to stretch herself, she declared 2017 as her Year of Adventure and she set out to purposely do things that she was uncomfortable with. In her article declaring her year of adventure, she ends with this, “Take a flying leap, splash hard, get your hair wet and smudge your makeup.” During her adventurous year, she jumped off a 10-meter diving board, she ran a naked 5K race and she rappelled down a 38 story high-rise in Austin (dressed in a Wonder Woman suit, of course!) – all of which she describes in this episode. Pam is someone who confronts life head on and lives it to the fullest. 18 Dec 2019 | 110 ~ Running Epic5 in Hawaii with Beth Whitman and Chris Fagan | 01:50:21
Today's conversation is a bit unusual and hopefully you'll be as inspired as always. Today I’m the guest and Chris Fagan, whom you might recall from Episode 88 of the She's Bold Podcast, asks ME the questions. This is all about my Epic5 run in Hawaii! As a reminder, Chris and her husband walked 560 miles over 48 days to the South Pole, pulling sleds with all of their gear that weighed about 200 pounds. Yeah, super inspirational. If you’re new to the show, be sure to go back and listen to that episode. Chris suggested that we sit down and talk through my recent experience running Epic5. As an experienced ultra-runner herself, she had some great questions. We were able to talk through my preparation for running five 50Ks in 5 days on 5 Hawaiian islands, as well as the actual experience and then my recovery. You’ll also hear a question that was asked by Dana, one of my Patreon supporters. Getting to ask questions of guests is just one benefit you’ll get as a supporter of the show. For just $5 month you’ll also be added to our private Facebook group, and have access to bonus content that is usually in the form of a question that I ask the guest after we’ve finished recording the main part of the show. I hope you’re feeling generous right as I’d love have you more involved with She’s Bold community :-) Check out shesboldpodcast.com/patreon for details. And thanks to Peter Jurt for running Epic5 for the 2nd year in a row. As I told him, given that he knew what he was about to get into, I was even more impressed that he showed up. The folks at Epic5 are best known for their triathlon races – where participants complete 5 triathlons in 5 days on 5 Hawaiian islands. And next year they are doing 10 triathlons in 10 days. So throughout my runs, I knew it would be nothing compared to what the participants in that event would be taking on. If you’re a runner and want to challenge yourself, I highly recommend the Epic5 run. It was truly a fantastic experience for me. And while there were just 3 of us running it this year, it’s limited to 12 so it’ll always be an intimate group of people that you’ll get to know well during the experience. You can see more about them at epic5.com. With that, please enjoy this conversation with me about Epic5! ***** Have a burning question and want to be featured on a future episode? 24 Oct 2018 | 068 - Alison Wright - Documentary Photographer, Author and Adventurer | 01:31:37
Ladies! Please join our Be Bold Facebook Group! Today’s conversation is with Alison Wright. Alison is a documentary photographer, the author of 10 books and an adventurer who’s been to 150 countries. In 2013 she was named National Geographic Traveler of the Year and recognized as someone who travels with a sense of passion and purpose – and really, that’s putting it mildly. She’s also the recipient of a Dorothea Lange Award in Documentary Photography and a two-time winner of the Lowell Thomas Travel Journalism Award. I think I first met Alison when she was in Seattle many many years ago at a book signing. She was speaking at a small event at a bookstore where she told the story of nearly dying in a bus crash in Laos. She survived, of course, but I remember her amazing story and remember completely admiring her sense of adventure and her desire to continue traveling despite this horrendous event that, really, changed her life. You’re going to hear some great stories from her in this episode. But my big takeaway from this conversation is how, from a very early age, Alison knew exactly what it was that she wanted to do. She wanted to travel and she wanted to document the human condition including the world’s indigenous and endangered cultures. When I describe myself, traveler is always the number one thing I identify with. I like to think that I put this passion of mine to some use by helping other people see the world and by showing them possibilities of personal growth through travel. But what I’ve done in the world of travel pales in comparison to Alison. She is an incredibly talented photographer who has put her passion for travel to use by documenting her experiences in an incredibly artistic way. As you’ll hear in this conversation, it’s obvious how singularly focused she was and still is on this goal which has become her life’s purpose. I don’t want to say she’s seen it all, but after 150 countries, she’s seen a lot. I’m sure she’s got a million stories that could fill many more hours of conversation, but for our purposes, we chatted about some of the highlights from her adventures including that bus crash in Laos, her befriending the Dalai Lama (and publishing a book about him) and, more recently, being thrown off a horse in Mongolia and how she thought she was going to die (again) when that happened. Before I get to this conversation with Alison, I want to remind you to check out the tours I offer at WanderTours.com (W*A*N*D*E*R). If you find the least bit of inspiration from today’s conversation with Alison, you’ll likely want to jump on board my trip to Papua New Guinea in 2019 – and there are just a couple of spots left on that tour. This tour coincides with the Mt. Hagen Singsing festival. This is where about 75 tribes gather to sing and dance in a cultural performance like none other. The festival includes about 1,000 local tribesmen and women and maybe 300 tourists. It’s a photographer’s dream, for sure. But you don’t have to be a photographer to enjoy and take in this unbelievable event. And as a side note, even those who don’t consider themselves photographers end up with such amazing photographs that they’ll be mistaken for photographers. Not only does this tour include the Mt. Hagen Show, but it includes a private mini-singsing in the mountains just outside of Mt. Hagen town where about a dozen tribal groups perform for a small amount of tourists. And it also includes another small but budding singsing festival in the Sepik River area. This one has maybe 10 – 12 groups performing and at that event maybe 20 – 25 tourists. In 2019 I’m told that that Sepik River singsing will include a very special ceremony where we’ll get to see the crocodile cuttings where boys are initiated into manhood. (Google it for more info.) The access to these groups and the ability to photograph them so up close will change your life forever. And I don’t say that lightly. After my first few trips to PNG, I came home speechless. Just really kind of culture shocked in the most amazing kind of way. It’s worth noting that I am working with Alison on the possibility of her leading a photography tour to Papua New Guinea so if you’re interested, you can let me know by sending an email to beth@wandertours.com. One final note, be sure to listen through to the end of this conversation as I feature a question from a listener and answer her travel-related question. With that, please enjoy this conversation with the amazing, Alison Wright. Connect with Alison: Links/books/people mentioned Enjoyed this episode? Subscribe then tell a friend! Be Bold,
11 Mar 2019 | 082 ~ Lisa Betts-LaCroix - Host, SuperPower U Podcast | 01:35:48
Win a pair of Jaybird Tarah bluetooth headphones ($100 value)! It's SO easy to enter! See details here. ***** Today’s conversation is with Lisa Betts-LaCroix. Lisa has an interesting background. Living in LA as an actor, she wracked up credits in hundreds of television shows, films and movies-of-the-week. After she and her husband moved to the Bay Area and started having kids, she co-founded a network of families who educate their children outside of traditional schools – you’re likely familiar with home-schooling, unschooling or any number of names this is called. She didn’t like what she was seeing in public school so took her kids’ education into her own hands. Now that’s bold. And then, in her late 40s, she discovered ballroom dancing and within a very short period of time competing, won the World Title in Pro-Am American Rhythm Ballroom Dance. Pretty cool. This conversation veers into some really interesting talk about how our current language around getting older just doesn’t properly express what it means to age. Things have changed a lot in maybe just the past 10 years. People are talking about living to 120, 125, 180! When we set limits on how old we can live for healthily, those words affect the choices we make and how we’re seen. As you’ll hear in this conversation, neither of us has the answer – YET - to how to best approach the topic of our “middle years,” but we’re exploring it and trying to figure out. If, after hearing this episode, you have some ideas, by all means, share them with me! Until then, enjoy this conversation with the inspiring Lisa Betts-LaCroix. ***** Have a burning question and want to be featured on a future episode? Martina has a really interesting backstory. She’s Chinese/German, was born in Hong Kong and then moved with her family to Beirut when she was eight, and then on to Hamburg, Bahrain, Amsterdam and Switzerland for college before moving to the United States. She speaks English, German, French and is learning Mandarin. This global upbringing, particularly living in Beirut for two years at the start of their civil war, has given her a very unique perspective on the world and has helped her navigate very challenging situations. Martina is an award-winning business founder and entrepreneur, a speaker, a champion mindset coach and, what I found most interesting, a race car driver. Martina has found success throughout her life by being bold, asking for what she wants and not being daunted by or intimidated when working in environments that are male dominated. 09 Jul 2018 | 054 - Sally Fisher, MD Integrative Physician Nutrition Specialist on a plant-based vegan diet, gluten intolerance vs. celiac and addictive foods | 01:09:53
Ladies! Please join our Be Bold Facebook Group! Today’s conversation is with Sally Fisher, MD. I met Sally about a year and a half ago when I stayed at Sunrise Springs Spa Resort, which is located just outside of Santa Fe. At Sunrise Springs she’s the Medical Director where she sees clients one-on-one. But she also teaches classes about health and wellness to visitors who are staying at the resort. Sally has a special interest and expertise in the power of plant-based diets as medicine and, of course, that was of interest to me. While I was there I took her class on gut health. We immediately clicked and I’ve been so eager since launching this podcast to sit down with her for a chat. I was so glad when our calendars aligned and I was able to chat with her during my recent trip to New Mexico and was at her office where she practices in Albuquerque that we got to meet up and record this. What I love about Sally is that she really has quite a no-nonsense approach to a plant-based diet. Always, she brings it around to the science and the data which is irrefutable in terms of what a healthy diet it is. I loved her advice about making big changes vs. small ones. You’ll hear her thoughts on this and the very sound reasoning as to why she believes bigger changes are longer lasting than small ones. ------ These are women who come from a wide range of backgrounds but the one thing they have in common is that they are Bold in what they do. They follow what they love and have created a lifestyle that supports it. When we hear stories about other people’s success and triumph over obstacles, that’s inspiring! These conversations are meant to make us all feel like anything is possible. We all have the ability to become better versions of ourselves and I know that in these conversations, you’re going to find pearls of wisdom. Bits of information that inspire and motivate you. I’m hoping you’ll hear something that makes you want to change and make choices in your life that ultimately makes you happier and more fulfilled. 24 Jun 2018 | 052 - Patricia Schultz - Author of 1,000 Places to See Before You Die on travel, carry-on luggage and solo travel | 01:39:32
Ladies! Please join our Be Bold Facebook Group! Today’s conversation is with Patricia Schultz. You may not be immediately familiar with her name but no doubt you know her by her books, 1,000 Places to See Before You Die and 1,000 Places to See in the US and Canada Before You Die. I’ve known Patricia for a long time as we often speak at the same events—the Travel and Adventure Shows which happen throughout the country from January through March--and although it’s been a couple of years for me, the New York Times Travel Show where Patricia speaks each year. This was the first time that we got to sit down and really chat. And I have to tell you that this was one of the most wonderful conversations I’ve had on this podcast. It’s probably because we are such kindred spirits. Patricia is a true lover and advocate of travel like no one I know. Not only has she been to many countries (she wasn’t sure exactly of the number) but she believes in her soul that everyone should travel and that there’s no excuse for not going somewhere. In this episode, we talk extensively about travel from many angles and many facets of it. I learned about the incredible serendipity that occurred for these books to have come to fruition (and how many years it took for her first book to be completed) and then go back in time and talk about how she got started in travel. And that includes family trips “down the shore” (as we say in New Jersey) and also her first trip abroad at 15 and she talks about how scared she was at that time and the little mishap that occurred that almost sent her off on the wrong destination. Patricia’s got a wonderful formula that she suggests to people for how they might travel and I also learned what she thinks about carry-on vs. checked luggage (you might be as surprised as I was). If you’re new to the podcast, I encourage you to go back to previous episodes where I highlight other interesting and truly courageous women doing extraordinary things. You’re really going to find some amazing conversations with these ladies. If you’re a runner you might be super inspired by ultra-marathoner Sabrina Seher (that’s episode 43), you can hear a really touching life story by musician Laura Love (episode 32) or if you’re looking for ways to get healthier listen to wellness coach Sapana Chandra (episode 18) or Dr. Robyn Benson (and she’s on episodes 11 and 50). Also, don’t miss my conversation with Travel Expert and TV Host Samantha Brown (episode 36). 16 Jul 2018 | 055 - Buddhist Teacher Linda Fane on belief, enlightenment and goals | 01:18:12
Ladies! Please join our Be Bold Facebook Group! This is one of those episodes where you're going to want to grab a pen and paper and sit down to take notes. If you’re driving, running or exercising, be forewarned that you’re going to have to go back and re-listen to this so you can jot down the many quotes and gems that my guest today drops during this conversation. Today’s conversation is with recurring guest, Linda Fane. If you haven’t already listened to previous episodes with her, go back and check out episode 5 and episode 39. And I guarantee you’ll be in for a treat because this is like having your own private dharma teaching In this episode, we focused on belief, mainly in the sense of us being able to conjure up an idea or a goal and then be able to make that happen. And as a Buddhist teacher, of course, Linda brings with it this Buddhist perspective, specifically that the mind is the means to the end and that everything has been and will be created in the future because of our mind. Everything we know as true (or perceive to be true) is because of our mind. But, as we discuss, you can’t get somewhere (or feel something, like happiness) simply because you believe it. You have to put forth effort as well. So we explore that. We explore what it means to have a belief and the importance of knowing ourselves well enough that we’re then not being swayed by other people or that we buy into their beliefs simply because they say something enough times or they say it loudly enough. In addition to belief, we also talk about being honest, we talk about social media and how we’re prone to only posting positive things even when we may be hurting, we talk politics without really talking about politics and we finish up with enlightenment. ------ These are women who come from a wide range of backgrounds but the one thing they have in common is that they are Bold in what they do. They follow what they love and have created a lifestyle that supports it. When we hear stories about other people’s success and triumph over obstacles, that’s inspiring! 13 Jun 2018 | 050 - Dr. Robyn Benson of Santa Fe Soul Center for Optimal Health on regenerative health and youthful aging | 00:59:59
Ladies! Please join our Be Bold Facebook Group! I am so excited to bring you another episode with Dr. Robyn Benson. If you haven’t already listened to my first conversation with her back in September (episode #11), definitely go back and listen to that. It will give you quite a bit of background on Robyn and her practice. In short, Robyn is a Doctor of Oriental Medicine. She not only brings with her a background of knowledge steeped in ancient wisdom and practice, but she is also one of the more forward-thinking practitioners in the country. Her practice is called Santa Fe Soul Center for Optimal Health. She specializes in youthful aging and provides cutting edge health technologies that focus on regenerative medicine, women’s health, preventative medicine as well as helping people recover from addiction. Her facility is pretty high tech and it really interesting. I’ve had a number of treatments with her including just having received two prolozone shots in my foot to help with a bit of healing from a running injury (so far so good but I’ll report back in another couple of weeks on how that’s going). Anyway, Robyn and I had a delightful follow up chat and talked about some of the new treatments that she’s doing and the types of patients she’s working with. But we also talked about some other really cutting edge practices including stem cell treatments that are available as part of her work in regenerative medicine. There’s so much emotional distress that’s an undercurrent in our culture now but the good news is that when your body feels better, your mind is going to follow suit. And there are countless many small ways that we can improve how we feel. Well, with that bit of intro and food for thought, so to speak, enjoy this conversation with Dr. Robyn Benson. 10 Sep 2019 | 103 ~ Beth Baker ~ Running Coach and Podcaster | 01:18:12
Today’s conversation is with running coach and fellow podcaster (and fellow name-sharer) Beth Baker. If you’ve ever considered running or exercising or even just trying to figure out other ways to incrementally improve your life (and hopefully you ALL have, that’s why you’re listening), you’re going to really love this conversation. You could say Beth is a reluctant Seattleite. And despite us both being here for quite a while, we only recently got connected when I was a guest on her podcast, Why We Run (and I’m going to be releasing that episode here soon so you can hear our full conversation where she’s asking me the questions). Like me, Beth didn’t get into running because it was something she had done all her life. She got into it as an adult and had to navigate her way through it without a lot of mentorship (or even online information). It took her a year to work up to a 5K race but once she did that, her trajectory was fast. But she still remembers her reluctance and the self-talk and doubts that initially kept her from running. That’s why today she’s a running coach encouraging first time runners. Because she remembers what it was like to just start out. You don’t have to be a runner or have any interest in running to get inspired by this conversation and what it is that Beth does. So with that, enjoy this conversation with running coach, Beth Baker.

13 May 2019 | 091 ~ Kelly Herron - Runner and Founder, Not Today | 01:18:14
Kelly Herron has basically made lemonade out of lemons. She had a traumatic, life-altering encounter, and made a choice to not let this event get the better of her. When out for a long run on a cold February day in Seattle, Kelly stopped at a public restroom where she was attacked by a registered sex offender who was hiding in a stall. She screamed, “Not Today Mother Fucker,” and this has become her battle cry and her company. She did everything she could to get out of this guy’s grip, managing to escape and then locking him in the bathroom until police arrived. She and her self-defense instructor are now offering courses through Fighting Chance Seattle. BTW – I’m going to include a photo of her Garmin GPS route in the show notes. This tracked her time during the attack. It’s absolutely crazy what she did to fend him off and, as she says in our conversation, you’ll do pretty much anything to save your life. I hope this conversation helps just one person down the road either by encouraging them to take a self-defense course or by giving them the confidence or bravery to fight off someone when they otherwise thought that maybe that wouldn’t be possible. Support the podcast through Patreon and get access to special audio and written content, be part of a private Facebook group and enjoy other benefits reserved for supporters of the podcast! ***** Today’s conversation is with Dar Williams. I’ve been a fan of Dar’s since the late 90’s when I first heard Cry Cry Cry, the band (and eponymous album) she recorded with Richard Schindell and Lucy Kaplansky. I’m sure I still have that on tape somewhere (yeah, I still have all my tapes from way back). Dar is a singer-songwriter with about 20 or so albums to her name as well as several books including her most recent, What I Found in a Thousand Towns. She is a great observer of culture and human behavior and what strikes me most about her music, her recent book and this conversation is that she is quite the optimist. I think that someone who is such a keen observer could easily fall into seeing the world from the dark side. But she doesn’t. She not only sees the good but she is also a problem solver – which is exactly why she published this book which was borne out of her observing towns across the country. It hasn’t all been easy for Dar and in this conversation, she does talk about her bouts with depression and her suicidal thoughts. But, as you’ll hear, she owns it. She doesn’t shy away from talking about her low points or beliefs and that right there makes her pretty bold in my book. I know you’ll love this conversation with the amazing Dar Williams. ***** Have a burning question and want to be featured on a future episode? Support the podcast through Patreon and get access to special audio and written content, be part of a private Facebook group and enjoy other benefits reserved for supporters of the podcast! ***** Today's conversation is with Lia Ditton. Lia is a professional sailor and rower and she’s accomplished some amazing feats. At 25, Lia was the youngest competitor and the only woman to sail across the Atlantic in a race called the OSTAR. She did that solo! She’s gone on to compete in many other single-handed sailing races including the Route du Rhum which goes from France to the Caribbean, and the Transpacific Yacht Race which goes from California to Hawaii. She then got into ocean rowing and, among other things, did the Woodvale Challenge which is from the Canary Islands to the West Indies. But now, NOW Lia is training for a 5,500 mile solo row across the North Pacific from Japan to San Francisco. Yeah, 5,500 miles across the Pacific. Though two men claim to have completed this, as we talk about in this conversation, these guys technically did not complete the journey. You’ll hear how they fell short of the final miles and what Lia has planned for her own adventure so that she actually completes the entire route. This is a pretty fascinating conversation. We take a deep dive into her training, what she’s doing to get ready for this big event and also her diet, which includes a 900 calorie breakfast. We talk a lot about logistics because I had SO many questions since I know so little about sailing and ocean rowing. She really indulged me and allowed me to ask a lot of really basic questions. ***** Have a burning question and want to be featured on a future episode? 03 Mar 2020 | 118 ~ Sarah Tuttle ~ Professor, Instrumental Astrophysicist and Maker of Mischief | 01:33:24
Today's conversation is with Sarah Tuttle. Sarah teaches introductory astronomy and observational astrophysics at the University of Washington. You’ll hear how and why I was so eager to chat with Sarah at the beginning of our conversation. And then as you hear her talk about not only her work but about her activism, you’ll understand why she is such a great fit for the podcast. In this conversation, we talk about how she got into astronomy, which she describes as a pretty circuitous route. And I think one of the key takeaways from this episode is that sometimes the path to our passion is not always direct. We also talk a lot about her social activism and her goal to bring more diversity into the field of astronomy. I’ll tell ya, she really left me thinking a lot about how I can make this world a better, more inclusive place. 08 Oct 2018 | 066 - Kim Steutermann Rogers - Journalist, Photographer and Citizen Scientist | 01:37:02
Ladies! Please join our Be Bold Facebook Group! Today's conversation is with Kim Steutermann Rogers. Kim is a journalist and photographer living on Kauai. And I gotta tell ya, she has carved out a beautiful life for herself on the island. Not only because she’s making a living doing something that’s very difficult these days to make a living at (that being a journalist and photographer), but she also calls herself a citizen scientist. How she describes it is that she’s managed to draw upon her early love for science and couple it with her journalistic talents. What she’s created is this life that has provided her with experiences and opportunities she could never have imagined. There really is so much subtle beauty in this conversation pertaining to this lifestyle that she’s chosen. It started when she left her family and friends behind on the mainland and just picked up and moved with her husband to this little slice of heaven. I don’t expect everyone to just pick up and move to an island after hearing this. But I hope you’ll dig deep and really think about what it is that makes you happy. Think about the different pieces of your life that you enjoy the most and consider how you might put them all together. You know it actually reminds me of my conversation with Sara McArdle on episode 59. Sara’s a career change agent and life coach who helps women uncover what their talents and interests are for the very purpose of creating a lifestyle that’s more suitable to what it is they love. Kudos to Kim for following her heart and finding that combination on her own. At the end of this conversation, I answer a question from a listener so please stay with me for that! If you have a question or feedback, you can call me at 877-280-5170 and leave a message. You, too, might be featured! Connect with Kim: Links/books/people mentioned

08 May 2018 | 047 - Jean Thompson - Owner and CEO of Seattle Chocolate Company on building a company and staying passionate | 01:10:10
Ladies! Join us on the Be Bold Facebook group! Jean Thompson is a full-on chocoholic and has been for as long as she can remember. It's therefore befitting that she is the Owner and CEO of Seattle Chocolate Company, one of the Northwest's premiere chocolate companies. In this episode, we talk about how she went from investor to CEO/Owner after an earthquake nearly destroyed Seattle Chocolate. 16 years later, she's still just as passionate about the business, bringing creative changes to the company, recreating the brand, innovating and disrupting an industry that she loves dearly. She also reflects on how she questioned her own abilities at running the company when the recession hit and sales fell flat but she kept moving forward and came out the other side on top (while other chocolate companies went under). What came out of that time was JCOCO, a slightly higher end chocolate with a philanthropic arm that has, to date, provided 2.7 million meals to those in need in just the past 5 years. JCOCO, by the way, is another brand of chocolate that’s still part of Seattle Chocolate. We wrapped up with some of Jean’s wonderful insights into travel and, of course, being bold. 17 Mar 2020 | 120 ~ Staying Focused During Difficult Times - Deep Dive with Beth and Chris Fagan | 00:42:52
Today’s episode is another deep dive with myself and Chris Fagan. I didn’t want to necessarily record one of these episodes ALL about the coronavirus. There’s plenty of information and resources out there. But I also didn’t want to completely ignore it and what it’s doing to all of us right now. I’ve seen a lot of people on Facebook expressing their struggle with not being motivated and not wanting to do things because everything is so uncertain. I think the current challenge for most of us is staying focused, staying upbeat and actually getting stuff done. Now I don’t want to just gloss over the enormity of what’s going on right now, but I also can’t allow it to distract me, to derail me, to paralyze me. I have to keep moving forward. Look, I’m not judging people who are having a difficult time but I encourage you to get creative with your time, get creative with your work, focus on your health and let’s get through this without losing our sanity. With that in mind, what I wanted to do with Chris was talk about what’s going on now but also put it into a broader context. Specifically, what do we do when we feel like things are uncertain and we feel powerless or helpless. What kind of decisions can we make when things feel out of control (apparently buying toilet paper is one of those things!). But seriously, we need to be mindful about how we’re responding to events—the big things and the small things. And that’s what Chris and I do here – we take a deep dive into how to avoid feeling paralyzed and derailed by outside circumstances. I will say that Chris and I recorded this a week ago. And things have changed so quickly even since then and I’m sure they’ll be changing rapidly in the days to follow. So please listen to this in the context of it already being a week old. Chris and I are sitting down on occasion for these deep dives. If there’s anything YOU’D like us to discuss in the future, lemme know by sending an email to beth@shesboldpodcast.com Please enjoy this deep dive conversation and let me know what you think of these. 22 Apr 2019 | 088 ~ Chris Fagan - Adventurer, Author & Speaker | 01:55:55
This conversation is amongst the most inspirational and touching that I’ve done. It’s a longish one and I really want you to hang on through this whole episode because there are some amazingly life-affirming stories here. This conversation is with Chris Fagan. Chris, along with her husband, Marty, walked 560 miles over 48 days to the South Pole. They were the first married couple to successfully complete this adventure as an unsupported expedition, meaning they were carrying everything themselves. They were each pulling a 220-pound sled loaded with all of their food and essentials. Chris has a book coming out in September called The Expedition about their journey (available for pre-order which I’ve linked to below). In this conversation, we definitely touch upon their adventure but also dig into their many other adventures as a couple and she shares some revealing information that will truly inspire you. Seriously, you are so going to love this conversation with this energetic, optimistic, adventurer. ***** Support the podcast through Patreon and get access to special audio and written content, be part of a private Facebook group and enjoy other benefits reserved for supporters of the podcast! ***** Have a burning question and want to be featured on a future episode? Caroline is the author of several books including The Gutsy Girl: Escapades for Your Life of Epic Adventure and Fighting Fire about her 13+ years as a San Francisco firefighter. She has given a lot of thought to what it means to be brave and specifically how this relates to females and how we are often taught to be fearful starting at a very early age. Caroline really wants to help change attitudes and language toward young girls in order to get them to be more independent and adventurous. This is a really powerful and fascinating conversation and I encourage you to share it with moms of young girls as well as young women. There’s just so much here that could change a young person’s life. With that, please enjoy this conversation with Caroline Paul. Have a burning question and want to be featured on a future episode? 30 Jun 2020 | 131 ~ Jennifer Louden ~ Author, Why Bother | 01:09:53
Enjoy these uplifting and positive conversations? Support the podcast through Patreon and get access to special audio and written content, be part of a private Facebook group (ladies only) and enjoy other benefits only for supporters of the podcast! ***** Today's conversation is with Jennifer Louden. I had really wanted to chat with Jen in-person. And we had hoped to do so when she was scheduled to be in Seattle on a book tour in June. But that all went sideways when travel (and pretty much everything else) was grounded. So we decided to chat remotely instead. And I’m so glad we did. You might know Jen as a pioneer in the self-care world. She’s a best-selling author and teacher of workshops, helping people lead a meaningful life through wellness, creativity and mindfulness practices. She has a new book out called Why Bother: Discover the Desire for What’s Next. There’s a couple of things I want to point out about this book and our conversation. At first glance, you might read the title, Why Bother, and think that it could be a bit depressing. Because we often associate sadness or depression with that phrase. But Jen turns that phrase around and helps you get to the root of why you SHOULD bother. And I love that about this book. The other thing that I’ll point out, and I do gush about it in the episode but it’s worth mentioning here…I don’t think there could have been a better time for this book to get published. Because we are ALL looking for meaning, for purpose, for the reasons why we should bother. Jen’s book gives us the road map to figure out why we should bother. She touches upon the main points of her book in this episode but, of course, I’d suggest picking up a copy of the book for lots of details and inspiration. Please enjoy this conversation with Jennifer Louden. ***** Have a burning question and want to be featured on a future episode? 06 Nov 2018 | 069 - Vicki Punter - Sailor, Adventurer and Entrepreneur | 01:17:14
Ladies! Please join our Be Bold Facebook Group! My conversation today is with Kauai resident Vicki Punter. Vicki is a sailor, adventurer and entrepreneur. She grew up in the midwest, left for the Caribbean after some brief work on the mainland and then took off on a boat to find adventure after the then-president of El Salvador mentioned wanting to sail around the world. Since that idea was planted, she figures that she and her husband, Captain Jim, have spent about 20 years on the water. Vicki is really unassuming. And I think much of that is because she grew up and spent the bulk of her travels in pre-internet times. But she really has lived a life of true adventure. She wasn’t blogging about it, she wasn’t posting on facebook or Instagram about it. She was just doing it. So in this conversation we talk about those years on the boat, her meeting local indigenous groups throughout the South Pacific and gathering up incredibly unique art which is now on display and for sale at her shop, Havaiki, on the north shore of Kauai. The thing that strikes me about Vicki is her willingness to embrace uncertainty. To be flexible and to say yes to every adventure. You know I’ve traveled a lot over the past 30 years and I’ve observed and traveled with a lot of people during that time. And one thing I know is that there’s a big difference between what a person experiences when they are flexible and they say yes compared to someone who questions everything and is fearful of what’s ahead. It makes all the difference in the kind of trip (and LIFE) you’re going to have. Vicki is someone who is all IN, and I love that about her and I know you will, too. Before we get to our conversation, I want to just note that we got interrupted about half way through because of the landscaper working outside her house so you’ll hear us take a brief pause. You might also hear the rain in the background as well. Also, we recorded this in September when hurricane Florence hit the east coast so you’ll hear us reference that. OK – with that, please enjoy this conversation with Vicki Punter. Connect with Vicki: Links/books/people mentioned Enjoyed this episode? Subscribe then tell a friend! Be Bold,

28 Jan 2019 | 077 - Jerilyn Brusseau - Peacetrees Vietnam Founder and Cinnamom | 02:00:43
Support the podcast through Patreon and get access to special audio and written content, be part of a private Facebook group and enjoy other benefits only for supporters of the podcast! ***** Today’s conversation is with Jerilyn Brusseau. Jerilyn is a cook, baker, restaurateur, business-woman, humanitarian and cultural diplomat. She has led (and continues to lead) two very different lives that have both allowed her to pursue passions that have supported her over the years. And I think it’s fair to say she loves them both equally. Some of you may know Jerilyn as the founder of Peacetrees Vietnam, an organization dedicated to clearing landmines (more than 110,000 to date) from a heavily bombed region of Vietnam. Others may know Jerilyn as the Cinnamom – the woman behind the irresistible recipe that we know as Cinnabon. In this conversation, we talk in-depth about her work in Vietnam, a country devastated by war. Her work started more than 20 years ago when she and her late husband, Danaan Perry, got this crazy idea to bring the people of Vietnam and the people of the U.S. together. But we also talk about her work in the culinary world and how she went from owning a restaurant in the Seattle area to becoming the creator of what is arguably the world’s best known cinnamon roll (Cinnabon is in 48 countries!). No matter how you know her (or whether you know her at all), I know you’ll love this conversation with the amazing and inspirational Jerilyn Brusseau. 10 Dec 2019 | 109 ~ Jean Godden ~ Journalist and Former Seattle City Council Member | 01:19:42
Today’s conversation is with Jean Godden. Jean is a journalist, a former Seattle City Council member and the author of Citizen Jean: Riots, Rogues, Rumors and Other Inside Seattle Stories. She’s been part of my world in one way or another for pretty much my entire time in Seattle, which is going on 30 years now. First as a journalist at the Seattle Post Intelligencer, then the Seattle Times and then as a Seattle City Council member. I’ve been really interested in having her on the podcast because she has been such a visible presence and influence in the Seattle area but it wasn’t until I started really researching her that I discovered that she’s 88 and still very active on many levels. That’s when I really really wanted to have her on the podcast. I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to chat with her and learn firsthand about her background and what has made her such a special woman and what keeps her going and inspired. So in this conversation, we chat about what led her to becoming a Seattle City Council member at 71 and what she accomplished during her 12 years on the council. We also dive into her background and what it was like growing up having lived in 116 places with her family (no, they weren’t fugitives on the run) and that was before she finally settled in Seattle. Also in this conversation, you’ll hear her secret to longevity. With that, please enjoy this conversation with Jean Godden. ***** Support the podcast through Patreon and get access to special audio and written content, be part of a private Facebook group and enjoy other benefits reserved for supporters of the podcast! ***** Have a burning question and want to be featured on a future episode? Angela has made lemonade out of lemons with regards to dealing with this pandemic. As you might recall from episode #45, Angela is the Founder and CEO of Savor Seattle Food Tours. When things started to shut down in Seattle at the beginning of the pandemic, I watched as Angela made really quick changes, pivots as everyone says these days. She created a new path for her company that fits right in with the company’s mission while also supporting local businesses, providing a service to locals and keeping her business alive. I’ve been keeping up with what she’s doing and have been so impressed with how she’s managed to go with the flow and I wanted to bring her back on the podcast to chat. I was most interested in how she knew so early that she needed to make changes and I wanted to find out how she went about making them. This is a shorter, check-in episode that I’m doing today. Lemme know if you like this format and if there’s any past guests that you’d like to hear from and I can reach out to them to bring them back! Just email me at beth@shesboldpodcast.com. 03 Sep 2019 | 102 ~ Kellie Phelan - Founder of The Works Seattle on Crohn's Disease, Starting a Business and Surrogacy | 01:25:48
Today’s guest is Kellie Phelan. Kellie is the founder of The Works Seattle. The Works offers DIY classes for a variety of things including cooking, canning, sewing, art classes, pumpkin carving, tarot card reading and much, much more. But for Kellie, The Works is much more than just a classroom or a place for learning. It’s a place for connecting. It’s where people come together, and yes, they’re learning a new skill, but they’re also making friends in the process. Obviously this is resonating with people because The Works is growing by leaps and bounds. Kellie shares her story of how The Works came to be. How it was an illness that made her realize she needed to leave a stressful job and find work that resonated with her, one in which she could create a lifestyle business. I really do love Kellie’s positive can-do attitude and the way that she’s made the best of situations. ***** Have a burning question and want to be featured on a future episode? 20 Aug 2018 | 060 - Beth Massa - Sustainable Packaging Entrepreneur on saving the oceans, living & working abroad and making change from the top down | 01:24:53
Ladies! Please join our Be Bold Facebook Group! Today's conversation is with Beth Massa. Beth is a sustainable packaging entrepreneur. She is, as we all should be, very concerned about the environment and our impact upon the planet. Beth is creating a first of its kind retail store, Ozarka, that doesn’t carry any products in single use containers. She believes big changes need to happen with the manufacturers and producers of products and is doing something about it in a very direct way by addressing the problem in her adopted home of Amsterdam. Until you really start paying attention, you probably don’t realize how much trash you’re generating using single use containers. My awareness was only heightened after watching (and being horrified by) the documentary, A Plastic Ocean. I watched probably the first 20 minutes and it completely changed things for me. Beth is realistic in believing that people aren’t necessarily going to make big changes on their own. She wants change to happen with the manufacturers and producers of the products. And her store will only carry goods in containers that are not single use. This is a pretty bold move. Taking on an industry. But the other part of her story is her move to Amsterdam. She was so solid in knowing that she wanted to live there that she spent a couple of years figuring out how to make it happen. That singular focus of wanting something so badly that all of your waking time is spent figuring out how to make it reality is often a theme here. I know that feeling and it’s likely that you know that feeling, too, for something that you’ve wanted to do. So you’ll hear how she made that happen. 24 Sep 2019 | 104 ~ Kim Brown Seely ~ Author and Empty-Nest Adventurer | 01:33:47
Today conversation is with Kim Brown Seely. Kim is an award-winning travel writer, a contributing editor for Virtuoso Life magazine and has written for National Geographic Adventure, Travel & Leisure, Town & Country, Outside magazine and many other outlets. She’s also a wife, a mother and, more recently, an empty-nester AND a sailor. And it’s these latter terms that bring us here today because she just published a book called, Uncharted: A Couple’s Epic Empty-Nest Adventure Sailing from One Life to Another which interweaves her empty nest experience with her sailing adventures with her husband. And as I do here on the podcast, I wanted to dig into her back story and wanted to find out more about her and how the book came about. So we talked about when she was young and her early travels with her family and her getting hooked on these adventures and the outdoors so much so that she wanted to make a living from them. And she did just that. She found her way into the travel writing world in New York City. Ultimately she landed here in Seattle, working for some very cutting edge companies in the early days of the dot com boom. She has an interesting story to tell and the adventures have only just begun!

Enjoy these uplifting and positive conversations? Support the podcast through Patreon and get access to special audio and written content, be part of a private Facebook group (ladies only) and enjoy other benefits only for supporters of the podcast! ***** Today’s guest is Chef Maria Hines. Maria is quite a well-known figure in the world of cuisine here in Seattle area and we are certainly lucky to have her here. In 2005 she was named one of the Top Ten Best New Chef’s in America by Food and Wine Magazine. In 2008, the New York Times recognized her restaurant, Tilth, which opened in 2006, as one of the ten best new restaurants in the country. And in 2009, she won the James Beard Award for Best New Chef: Northwest. As you can well imagine, things have been a bit sidelined with her restaurant for the past couple of months but Tilth just re-opened on July 1 with limited seating capacity and with curbside pickup. So if you’re in the neighborhood, be sure to support this woman-owned, independent restaurant. 03 Apr 2018 | 043 - Runner and Race Director Sabrina Seher on ultra-marathoning and being a Super You! | 01:27:41
Ladies, join our Be Bold Facebook group! "You fail your way to success and what is success, it’s relative, right?" - Sabrina Seher
Sabrina was also running the Quadzilla. But Sabrina, as you’ll hear in our conversation, really stood out for me. She was saying hello to a lot of people on the course, she was having fun, she was jumping around. She was basically doing everything you don’t do if you want to conserve your energy in order to run 26.2 miles. But we chatted during one of the races and then became Facebook friends. Naturally I started seeing her posts and noticed that it seemed like she is always running a race. And, news flash, she is. She has given me new perspective on what it means to be a runner/marathoner. The typical thinking is that you need 16 weeks of training to prepare for a marathon. And yeah, that is technically true, particularly for first time marathoners or someone looking for a personal record or a Boston Qualifying time. But if enjoy running, especially long distances, then why not run a Quadzilla or run 52 marathons in a year like Sabrina did a couple of years ago? By the first week of April, she had already run in this calendar year five marathons, a 50K and two 100-milers. So, yeah. She’s out there running a lot. In addition to all these marathons, Sabrina owns Super Studio 253 in Tacoma, Washington. The studio offers all sorts of classes as well as training for runners. She also is the race director for the Cascade Super Series marathons and half marathons and manages a group of pacers. At first you might think that Sabrina is all about Super Sabrina. But she’s not. She’s about a Super You! Her motto is Find Your Super. And she really means it. She wants people to be their better selves, to dig deep and discover what it is that can make them Super. And her energy output and desire to make YOU better is quite infectious. As you’ll hear in this conversation, she has not had a straight path to wellness and success. Her life has not been perfect. But she emerged from some dark places only to come bursting out so that she could set an example for her two children and so that she could be an inspiration to others. I observed and was the recipient of a little of that energy during the Seattle Quadzilla. But got a huge dose of it during our conversation and that energy is still with me. She’s the kind of person that you want to surround yourself with. And she kinda gives you faith that there are great people in the world, you just need to know where to look for them and be open. Enjoy these uplifting and positive conversations? Support the podcast through Patreon and get access to special audio and written content, be part of a private Facebook group (ladies only) and enjoy other benefits only for supporters of the podcast! ***** This is where you’ll hear one-on-one conversations with women who have inspirational stories to share. They are entrepreneurs, authors, musicians, spiritual teachers and adventurers. Though they come from a wide variety of backgrounds, what they have in common is that they approach the world by seeing the possibilities, not the obstacles. And I know that’s not an easy thing to do these days. But today’s guest, Chris Fagan, manages to see the light in every situation. Chris joins me on occasion to do a deep dive on a topic and today we wanted to chat about how we’re moving through this pandemic. Of course she finds this all challenging, but she has a great perspective on the uncertainty of our situation and how to make the most of this time. We also talk about getting comfortable with the uncomfortable and also how differently people are responding to the pandemic. As a little background reminder, I first chatted with Chris back on episode #88 when we discussed her 560-mile, 48-day walk to the South Pole with her husband, Marty. So she’s well aware of overcoming adversity. Please do share this episode with a friend or two. I know that hearing this conversation will help people feel inspired, perhaps a bit more uplifted and optimistic in the fact that we will get through this. Everyone could use a Chris Fagan in their lives and, short of being fortunate enough to know her in person, sharing this episode with others is the next best thing.
