David had a freak accident and was pulled under the wheels of a speeding train. In the hospital afterwards, he had my amazing near-death experience (NDE). Generally, people who have had NDEs aren’t trying to “sell” anything, other than perhaps a seminar, book or DVD.  We don’t try to sell a new religion, because we left all that behind.  However, spirituality plays a pretty strong role in the experiences we share.  One of the strangest things I’ve noticed is that for those of us who had our NDEs as a result of some horrific accident, while in most cases the accident and its crazy circumstances would be the focus of any compelling story, an NDE negates that.

Louisa was raised to view God as nothing more than a human concept and spiritualism as a form of superstition. Then, in 1982 at a Manhattan nightclub, she suffered a cardiac arrest brought on by lidocaine poisoning, shot out of her body, and experienced an other-worldly journey to her god source - the Sun.

Returned to her body, she dismissed her experience as a hypoxic hallucination. She'd never heard of a Near-Death Experience, and even if she had, she'd have considered the idea of crossing over to be ludicrous.

Louisa Peck has taught literature and writing at the University of Washington, Evergreen State College, and several Puget Sound area community colleges. An intermediate ballet dancer through her 50s, she now relies on yoga and weight-lifting to stay fit enough for her ambitious wilderness adventures as a mountain climber and thru-hiker.

Shortly after graduating from Vassar College, Louisa ingested a gram of lidocaine sold to her as cocaine in a Manhattan nightclub, triggering a grand mal seizure and cardiac arrest. While her vital signs ceased throughout 3 minutes of unsuccessful CPR, her spirit was jettisoned into the spirit realm and the incredible love of the light.

Only 15% of people revived from death bring back vivid memories from the other side, Louisa did not welcome hers. As an active alcoholic and staunch atheist, Louisa rejected her NDE as nothing more than the hallucinations of a dying brain. Louisa was raised to view God as nothing more than a human concept and spiritualism as a form of superstition. Then, in 1982 at a Manhattan nightclub, she suffered a cardiac arrest brought on by lidocaine poisoning, shot out of her body, and experienced an other-worldly journey to her god source - the Sun.

Louisa Peck has taught literature and writing at the University of Washington, Evergreen State College, and several Puget Sound area community colleges. An intermediate ballet dancer through her 50s, she now relies on yoga and weight-lifting to stay fit enough for her ambitious wilderness adventures as a mountain climber and thru-hiker.

Shortly after graduating from Vassar College, Louisa ingested a gram of lidocaine sold to her as cocaine in a Manhattan nightclub, triggering a grand mal seizure and cardiac arrest. While her vital signs ceased throughout 3 minutes of unsuccessful CPR, her spirit was jettisoned into the spirit realm and the incredible love of the light.

Only 15% of people revived from death bring back vivid memories from the other side, Louisa did not welcome hers. As an active alcoholic and staunch atheist, Louisa rejected her NDE as nothing more than the hallucinations of a dying brain. Anthony Peake was a curious child. While his friends were reading Batman and Superman comics Anthony was immersing himself in learning of the most arcane nature (whilst still keeping an eye on the X-Men and Dr. Strange). It was in 1966, at the age of twelve that he, quite by accident, came across a copy of The Sky People by Brinsley Le Poer Trench and from then on there was no stopping him. The British part-series Man Myth and Magic was read with intense interest followed by the discovery of John Keel’s Project Trojan Horse and Jacques Vallee’s Passport to Magonia. What followed was a voracious, and unquenchable, need to know everything about everything.

At university he chose courses that would accommodate his wide interests, specialising in the sociology of religion, the theory of language development and the art of the Italian Renaissance. A post-graduate course in management lead Anthony away from his calling as a writer and into a career as a manager in various UK businesses. His interest in the esoteric continued with a growing fascination for quantum physics and neurology developing over the years.

It was in the year 2000 that his life was to change. A fortuitous set of circumstances allowed him to take a year sabbatical from his business career and he decided that he would focus the fruits of all his reading and research in writing a book. Exactly one year later he surfaced with the manuscript of his first book, then entitled Cheating the Ferryman. This book was a distillation of all his areas of interest, quantum physics, neurology, ancient myths, altered-states of consciousness and the mystery of death.

However, it was to take five years before this work appeared in print. Thanks to the help of Professor Bruce Greyson of the University of Virginia, an article based upon Anthony’s Cheating the Ferryman hypothesis was to appear in the Winter 2004 edition of the Journal of Near-Death Studies, the academic periodical of the International Association of Near-Death Studies (IANDS). A few months later, in early 2005, British publishing house Arcturus bought the rights to the book and, a year later, and after a substantial re-write, Anthony’s first book, with the new title Is There Life After Death – The Extraordinary Science of What Happens When We Die was published. The rest, as they say, is history. This book has now sold over 60,000 copies world-wide and has been translated into various foreign language editions including Spanish, Russian and Polish. Indeed, Anthony has now had books published in every major European language.

Anthony has now written twelve books. All of them develop his Cheating the Ferryman hypothesis into ever-wider areas of application. His approach has always been to apply science to the mysterious and the enigmatic.

In this prize-winning essay for the 2021 Bigelow Institute for Consciousness Studies essay contest, Dr. Ruickbie examines the evidence for the survival of consciousness after death (“life after death”). “I was almost not here. In 2015, I was in a coma, on ECMO (life support). I was given last rites, my family told to let me go as doctors said they had done all they could. A prayer blanket was laid on me after my head was shaved and my brain scanned for activity. The prognosis? If I lived, I would probably be in a vegetative state, but that living probably would not happen as I had less than 1% chance of living.

My CO2 level was over 200 (normal is 20-30). My blood was poison to myself. September 26 th, 2015 was one of my weekends to die. Family and friends came in from all over the world to continue prayers but realistically say “good-bye”. My daughter kept telling everyone I would live, which was treated as a faithful delusion.

Now that I survived an unsurvivable situation, as a spiritual person, it inspired me to respect my body more and learn about our powerful bodies and spirit. This experience has strengthened my faith and has inspired me to pursue postgraduate studies, and complete a Doctoral degree in genetics and osteopathic medicine. I do believe we were created with the ability to heal or improve our bodies and overcome environmental issues which damage or change our DNA. Sheri Perl is a spiritual healer and counselor, author, teacher, and interfaith minister. She became involved in spiritualism in a desperate attempt to save her life. In this prize-winning essay for the 2021 Bigelow Institute for Consciousness Studies essay contest, Dr. Ruickbie examines the evidence for the survival of consciousness after death (“life after death”). Born in 1968 and now living in Sussex, England, I have spent my career in science. My undergraduate studies were in chemistry, and my PhD studies were in organic medicinal chemistry, during which I worked in a team that created a molecule that opened the door to a cure for Hepatitis C, as well as treatments for certain cancers, and HIV. In 1999, I began working in the pharmaceutical industry, for the first ten years helping to bring new drugs to market, and for the past ten years working alongside academic clinical investigators in designing, conducting, helping publish and interpreting clinical studies looking into the effects of exciting new compounds in diseases such as HIV, hematological malignancies, obesity, and, most recently, neurological disorders such as narcolepsy and Alzheimer’s.

It is a part of my day job to be able to critique scientific data and understand how design can affect outcomes, among other things. Anthony Peake was a curious child. While his friends were reading Batman and Superman comics Anthony was immersing himself in learning of the most arcane nature (whilst still keeping an eye on the X-Men and Dr. Strange). It was in 1966, at the age of twelve that he, quite by accident, came across a copy of The Sky People by Brinsley Le Poer Trench and from then on there was no stopping him. The British part-series Man Myth and Magic was read with intense interest followed by the discovery of John Keel’s Project Trojan Horse and Jacques Vallee’s Passport to Magonia. What followed was a voracious, and unquenchable, need to know everything about everything.

At university he chose courses that would accommodate his wide interests, specialising in the sociology of religion, the theory of language development and the art of the Italian Renaissance. A post-graduate course in management lead Anthony away from his calling as a writer and into a career as a manager in various UK businesses. His interest in the esoteric continued with a growing fascination for quantum physics and neurology developing over the years.

It was in the year 2000 that his life was to change. A fortuitous set of circumstances allowed him to take a year sabbatical from his business career and he decided that he would focus the fruits of all his reading and research in writing a book. Exactly one year later he surfaced with the manuscript of his first book, then entitled Cheating the Ferryman. This book was a distillation of all his areas of interest, quantum physics, neurology, ancient myths, altered-states of consciousness and the mystery of death.

However, it was to take five years before this work appeared in print. Thanks to the help of Professor Bruce Greyson of the University of Virginia, an article based upon Anthony’s Cheating the Ferryman hypothesis was to appear in the Winter 2004 edition of the Journal of Near-Death Studies, the academic periodical of the International Association of Near-Death Studies (IANDS). Born in 1968 and now living in Sussex, England, I have spent my career in science. She is the minister at Two Worlds Spiritualist Centre in Nanaimo, Vancouver Island. Nicole loves walking through the forest, listening to audios and music that keep her inspired. She lives close to the river where she spends a lot of time. She has a wonderful husband Matthew Ashdown and a sweet mini doodle named Gracie. In Nicole’s free time, she enjoys travelling the world and exploring sacred sites, sitting at home painting until the late hours of the evening, and writing what catches her inspiration. My mom asked me to write this book while she was on her deathbed. It is a responsibility that I could not ignore. I think no one could. So, I’m passing this along not only to fulfill that obligation, but also to honor the life she led, the lessons she taught me, and the beautiful end-of-life visions she had during her last few days.  

This book is my best attempt at relaying my mom’s end-of-life experiences which she urged me to pass along, in addition to some of my perspective on those visions based on my own interpretations.

It is my story of caring for my mom as she passed away, her powerful and compelling insights as she approached death, and my surprising spiritual journey with her since then.

Near Death Experience. This week I am talking to Gary Wimmer about his book 'A Second in Eternity: A 'Near-Death, Out of Body' Experience and a Voyage Beyond Time and Space, Into the Infinite (Volume 1)'.



A Second in Eternity is the true story about the author’s ‘near-death, out-of-body' experience and everything that led up to it. For no apparent reason, the author suddenly found himself increasingly more aware of and able to ‘see and know’ future events, plus the thoughts and feelings of others, at will and with uncanny clarity. But what started as a trickle, within days became a tsunami of unexplainable precognitive and psychic ability. Unable to stop, filter or understand what he was experiencing, he channeled this phenomenon into accurately forecasting numerous events minutes before they occurred.
