14 Feb 2022Ep. 0 Midlife Fulfilled Podcast Introduction Episode00:11:55

The Midlife Fulfilled podcast is for men and women in their midlife season who are looking for fulfillment in specific areas of their life such as physical health, mental health, fitness, career, financial security, marriage, family, other relationships and more.

Each week I curate content on a specific topic, reviewing the facts with you and providing my insights on their significance to your midlife fulfillment.

Each episode also features a BF (before fulfillment) to AF (after fulfillment) idea to help inspire you to take action toward more fulfillment in your life.

I’m not a doctor or therapist. I’m a curator with something to say. On each episode, I will share information I’ve curated from credible sources on the topic of each episode. I’ll also offer my thoughts on the information I’ve curated.

I truly believe that midlife can be the best season of our life. I invite you to join me on this journey by subscribing to this podcast. Look in your podcast player and press the subscribe button.

If you know other midlifers who would enjoy this podcast, please share it with them using the links further below.

What I want you to do now - after you listen to the introductory episode - is to listen to the first episode where I kick off this journey with a discussion of what it means to be in midlife. And, what it means to be fulfilled.

Let’s get this journey started midlifers…

14 Feb 2022Ep. 1 Finding Fulfillment and Happiness: A Podcast to Guide Your Midlife Journey00:24:02

Hello midlifers. Welcome to the journey. This is episode 1 of The Midlife Fulfilled podcast. If you haven’t listened to the introduction episode, I suggest you stop now and listen to that first.

On this episode I focus on two topics:

  • I define midlife. When I sent out my survey, this was the most common question I received - how do you define midlife?
  • I define and discuss what it means to be fulfilled.

The Happiness U Curve is from a study published by the National Bureau of Economic Research.

A national survey of Midlife in the United States conducted a poll to determine how many people experience midlife crises. It found that approximately 26% of the participants reported having a midlife crisis. Most survey participants reported that their midlife crisis occurred before age 40 or after 50.

A 2016 study published in the International Journal of Behavioral Development found an upside to the midlife crisis—curiosity.

A study from Stanford University titled The New Map of Life suggests that the average life span is on its way to 100.

My podcast interview with Howard Tiersky, a highly acclaimed digital transformation strategist.   Howard says that all customers' behavior is based on their thoughts and feelings.

21 Feb 2022Ep. 2 Survey Finds 5 Surprising Desires for Fulfillment in Midlife Journey00:31:40

Hello midlifers. Welcome to episode two of The Midlife Fulfilled podcast.

In episode one I covered two topics:

  • I defined midlife.
  • I defined what it means to be fulfilled.

In episode one, I also shared my first BF to AF experience. Don't remember what BF to AF is? It's an experience that covers "before fulfillment" to "after fulfillment" and its impact on my life.

In episode two you're going to discover the results of a midlife survey I sent out, the findings of which validate my hunch that I am not alone on the journey to find fulfillment in certain areas of my life.

You'll discover that nearly 78% of respondents report they are fulfilled in some, but not all areas of their life, about 19% are very fulfilled and about 3% are not fulfilled at all.

In episode three I'll explain why the Pareto Principle has significance to us in our midlife seasons and why you should care.

Starting with episode four, I'll be featuring interviews with people who are joining me to share their BF to AF experience.

28 Mar 2022Ep. 7 The Competitive Skydiver's Journey: From Divorce to New Career and Author00:25:39

Brian started jumping out of airplanes at age 19 in the Army. He pursued skydiving as a devoted hobby. He began competing in skydiving in a four person team. After four years of competing, winning two bronze and silver medals but not achieving the elusive gold medal, he took a break from skydiving.

In the meantime, he went through a divorce and hit a season of challenges in his personal life and career. Vocationally, he was a web developer early in his career.  Brian's career achievements accelerated after reading Joe Pulizzi’s Epic Content Marketing. He pitched himself to his VP of Marketing to commit to content marketing under his leadership and the results he achieved proved him right. He got remarried. His blended family of six kids between him and his wife is a huge blessing. He began to teach skydiving, which brings him a significant level of fulfillment.

Brian turned to what brings him passion to find fulfillment above and beyond the blessings of his family life, which in his case is teaching others to skydive.  Listen to Brian's BF to AF story to get your own inspiration in whatever midlife season you're in.

04 Jul 2022Ep. 22 From Termination to Fulfillment: One Woman’s Crazy Journey from Law School to Career Coach00:32:00

This week you'll meet Marlo Lyons.  In this episode, Marlo shares her BF to AF story that began when she was fired from a job she held early in her career. Soon after that she and her then-fiance broke up and she found herself unemployed and unengaged. She wasn't happy.

Marlo continued her career path in an industry she didn't love. When she married, her husband was self-employed and she provided a steady paycheck and health benefits from her job. But, when her husband landed a job with benefits she knew it was her opportunity to make a change in her career.

The problem was that Marlo didn't know what she wanted to be and this was at the age of 46.

Marlo found her calling in a role that allows her to use her natural gifts and talents while working with smart people and helping them shape their careers.  She even wrote a book that explains her methods further and provides great career advice.

As with each episode on the Midlife Fulfilled podcast, regardless of the unique circumstances consider the parallels in your own midlife journey.  Maybe you're facing a transition and you're struggling to figure it out. Let Marlo's story on this episode provide some inspiration.

It was a globe-trotting venture with many sacrifices made along the way.

25 Jul 2022Ep. 25 From High-Octane Entrepreneurship to a Fulfilling Career in Santa Rosa Tourism 👏🏼00:33:30

This week’s guest is Kurt Shaver.  Kurt had a Covid-inspired, midlife, life-balance assessment reset that resulted in him recently starting his third career.

He summarizes his career as having three stages:

  • 3 decades in corporate tech sales
  • 10 years as an entrepreneur
  • Business Development at Sonoma County Tourism Bureau since mid-2021

On this episode, Kurt reveals that he let go of his ego to recently make the transition from his second career to his third career in the tourism industry. The fulfillment he is enjoying is exactly what he had hoped.

You'll hear why I and so many of Kurt's friends are "living vicariously" through him as we see the pictures he posts on social media "at work" visiting wineries, going zip-lining, participating in grand openings at new resorts, cruising in hot-air balloons and other envious activities in the context of his job duties as group business development executive at the Sonoma County Tourism Bureau. Kurt posts most of his pictures on LinkedIn, where he has more than 20,000 followers. Follow him on LinkedIn to live vicariously through him.

Don't be surprised if Kurt's story strikes a chord with you, especially the part about letting go of ego to achieve something fulfilling.

01 Aug 2022Ep. 26 Unleashing Your Potential with a Career Coach's Guide to Discovery and Authenticity 🗣00:32:24

This week’s guest is Pamela Slim.  Pamela has worked with many people as a coach, who express fear and hesitation in sharing their voice on social topics.

On this episode, Pamela explains why some people fear using their voice for change because they're concerned they may be no different than anyone else or they're concerned about angering friends, their family, or their boss, or they may be forced to make big choices such as leaving a job, a marriage or separating from certain friends.

Pam explains the power of standing in the truth of what you know you need to be fulfilled in your midlife seasons.

Pam also discusses how she and her husband are empowering people in her local community in Mesa, Arizona through the Mainstream Learning Lab.  The lab is a place to enable the community to design programs to highlight local native leaders.

You'll find much to be inspired by in my conversation with Pamela Slim. Enjoy!

This week’s guest is Robert Rose.  Robert is a global marketing influencer. He runs a successful consultancy called The Content Advisory. He’s authored 3 books. His latest book Killing Marketing will challenge your conventional thinking about marketing and possibly turn it upside down.

Robert describes how his most current BF to AF journey began with his aspiration to be a rock star. He grew up believing he would be a successful musician. He discovered in his 30s that his "function" (not his "form") would allow him to achieve his aspirations in a different way when he fell in love with business.  Robert discovered that his fulfillment was initially unconscious but eventually it became conscious.

He went from saying yes to just about everything that came his way, which served him well, to realizing that once he found his function, it was time to adopt the mindset of saying no to everything unless it was a "hell yes" because the thing he would say yes to should be aligned with his function.

Robert's BF to AF midlife journey includes overcoming the fear of success.  You'll be inspired to hear how he overcame the fear of success. And, you might discover that you or someone you know has had this same fear!

05 Sep 2022Ep. 31 The Ultimate Midlife Makeover: A Story of Fitness, Food and Entrepreneurship🥇00:33:29

This week’s guest is Reneta Jenik.  Reneta's BF (before fulfillment) to AF (after fulfillment) entrepreneurial story began 11 years ago when she went through a divorce. After picking up the pieces post-divorce she began competing in triathlons.  This motivated her to uplevel her nutrition strategy and she lost 80 pounds. She regained her confidence and eventually remarried.

She was so enthralled with being an entrepreneur that she knew this was her path to avoiding a midlife crisis.

She resigned from her corporate job to give her food-technology startup idea a go full time. Two years later, Foodom is growing and serving many families with nutritional, home-cooked meals.

What makes Reneta's BF to AF midlife entrepreneurial story compelling is her conviction to make Foodom a success. She says that she "feels it in her bones" that it will continue to grow and succeed in a big way. You'll be inspired to hear the conviction in her voice. Maybe, you'll pause to think about what you feel in your bones that could help you avoid a midlife crisis.

12 Sep 2022Ep. 32 From Life Threatening Illness to Impact: How One Entrepreneur is Changing Lives 💥00:40:24

This week’s guest is Jon Ferrara.  Jon shares his BF (before fulfillment) to AF (after fulfillment) story about how he came to realize his purpose in life after surviving a life-threatening illness.

Jon was on the top of the world. He had just sold his company Goldmine for enough money that set him up for the rest of his life and he was only in his 40s.  He was feeling great until he began losing weight and was becoming very weak. After many doctor visits and tests, he embarked on a journey to defeat a form of cancer that is a common killer of people in their 40s.

Jon overcame this illness and is now thriving. He now understands that his purpose on this planet is to continually grow and the only way he wants to grow is by helping other people in his life grow and reach their potential.

Jon advises us to not chase material wealth at the expense of relationships by investing in helping others grow beginning with your immediate family, your close friends, and your community.

Jon is building another business (Nimble) and he's enjoying the relationships he builds. The journey is the reward for Jon.

Tune into Jon's BF to AF story. You may discover that your journey is the reward.

19 Sep 2022Ep. 33 Reflect on Your Regrets Uncover the Good Life with New York Times Bestseller Dan Pink00:41:46

This week’s guest is Daniel H. Pink.  Dan is the author of five New York Times bestsellers, including his latest, The Power of Regret: How Looking Backward Moves Us Forward.

This episode is devoted to a conversation about the true power of regret and how we can benefit from understanding our regrets. Dan's other books include the New York Times bestseller When: The Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timing, which we discuss a little near the end of our conversation.

The Power of Regret is one of the most thought-provoking books I’ve ever read! This book really made me think. I can honestly say I’m a better thinker after reading this book.

Dan and I discuss the 4 types of regrets:

  1. Foundation regrets
  2. Boldness regrets
  3. Moral regrets
  4. Connection regrets

More than 20,000 people across the globe have taken Dan's regret survey, sharing examples of their regrets. The common theme is that people around the world experience regret across these four types.

“By studying regrets we have a chance at understanding a good life.”

This quote from Dan Pink in The Power of Regret, in my opinion, is the key takeaway message from this book.

If you're even remotely tempted to skip this episode DON'T! I promise you won't regret it! There I said it. And, I mean it!!!

26 Sep 2022Ep. 34 Doctors Baffled, but Food Was the Cure: A Shocking Journey to Wellness00:34:36

This week’s guest is Tom Petty.  Tom is no relation to the deceased musician by the same name. Tom shares his BF (before fulfillment) to AF (after fulfillment) story about how he and his wife Joanne have survived a difficult midlife season during which Joanne battled a life-threatening illness that stumped the medical community.

Tom and Joanne completely changed their diet by only eating meat, fish, fruits, and vegetables nearest to their natural harvest state. They eliminated all processed foods and the results have been so amazing that even the doctors are impressed.

Joanne has gone from being restricted to a wheelchair to walking without the aid of a walker or cane. Tom lost more than 60 pounds without trying, just by eating non-processed foods.

Tom has suffered from psoriasis his entire life. He says that his psoriasis is in remission now with little evidence of it in his life.

Tom and Joanne's new normal is not quite what it was prior to Joanne's initial stroke-like incident that spiraled into the nightmare scenario that has lasted years. But, it is considerably better than it was prior to making the diet change.

Bernie describes the importance of reading the ingredients on food product labels and how he and his wife make homemade almond milk rather than purchase it at the grocery store.

Listen to Tom's BF to AF story and share it with someone you know who needs to hear it. Check out Tom's psoriasis program below to learn how he's helping others who battle this condition.

03 Oct 2022Ep 35 An Inspiring Journey to Finding Midlife Fulfillment as a Public Speaking Coaching 🗣00:36:35

This week’s guest is Diane Diaz.  This is the first episode published after hurricane Ian.  Both Diane and I are Floridians and we are safe. I comment on this in the introduction of this episode.

Diane's BF (before fulfillment) to AF (after fulfillment) story spans about 20 years in her career where after about 10 years in a corporate role earning a good income and having many perks, she wasn't fulfilled.

When Diane was downsized out of her job in a branding role, she realized it was her opportunity to find something that REALLY fulfilled her.  She landed in a teaching role. Now more than 13 years later, she is very fulfilled teaching branding at a university.

Additionally, she discovered her voice and became a speaking coach and consultant. Finding her voice and helping others do the same is the second part of Diane's AF that fulfills her tremendously.

Ask yourself about the current "work project" you're committed to. Do you view it as a "work project?" To understand the meaning of this question listen to Diane's BF to AF story and how this applies to you.

17 Oct 2022Ep. 37 Inspired by a Change-Agent Mom: She Overcome All Career Challenges 👏🏼00:36:06

This week’s guest is Stacy Sherman.  Stacy's BF (before fulfillment) to AF (after fulfillment) story is about what she learned from her mom in midlife. She admits that she didn't fully realize the lessons available from her mom in her younger years but now she is blown away by the lessons she has learned from her.

Stacy featured her mom as a guest on her own podcast, the Doing CX Right podcast (see below). I listened to that interview and was not only impressed but I was also struck by the many lessons available to all of us, not just for Stacy.

On this episode, Stacy reveals how these lessons stem from her mom being a change agent for women long before the MeToo movement.  Tune in to glean your own takeaways from Stacy's mom that you can apply to your life.

24 Oct 2022Ep. 38 Transformation on the Camino de Santiago Pilgrimage: A Life-Changing Journey to Fulfillment00:30:48

This week’s guest is Bernadette McClelland. Bernadette's BF (before fulfillment) to AF (after fulfillment) revolves around a long journey she accomplished on the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage.

On this episode, Bernadette reveals the impact of this pilgrimage starting with her "why" and then "how" she did it. The power in her story is "what" fulfillment she experienced which extends far beyond completing her 130-kilometer journey in 5 days from Portugal to Spain.

During my takeaway, I challenge you to think about what pilgrimage (metaphorically speaking) you need to take. I share with you the pilgrimage I plan to take as a result of the inspiration from this conversation with Bernadette.

This week’s guest is A. Lee Judge. Lee's BF (before fulfillment) to AF (after fulfillment) is the story of his first identity that he let "die" to realize the potential and fulfillment of his current identity.

On this episode, Lee tells the story of his dream of being a famous DJ. Actually, he was a very successful DJ for many years under the brand name DJ Judge Mental. He started DJing in high school, continued through college - getting paid for his DJing - and continued after he graduated college.

Lee is no longer a full-time DJ.  He let that identity "die." However, he has fulfillment in being a content creator, running his own business, and enjoying the blessings of his family life.

07 Nov 2022Ep 40 Surviving a Brain Tumor Diagnosis: An Amazing Story of Career Change and Finding Balance00:30:44

This week’s guest is Deborah Albers. Deb's BF (before fulfillment) to AF (after fulfillment) is a story that you're going to want to share with others.

On this episode, Deb tells her story of how she and her husband decided to go forward with brain surgery to deal with her debilitating condition. The procedure she agreed to undergo has a certain mortality rate. She didn't know if she would make it.

Fortunately, Deb survived the procedure. After a long recovery, she decided to do things differently.  She couldn't recover the time she lost with her husband and two daughters from 70 hour-work weeks and traveling 100 nights per year. She realized that what she thought had made her happy in her hard-charging career didn't fulfill her. She went to work for a non-profit and committed to a work schedule that prioritizes her family and her devotion to writing children's books.

Tune in to hear Deb's life-changing realization of the true meaning of fulfillment. You'll want to share this episode with someone, in particular, someone early in their career who is on a similar path as Deb was early in her career.

This episode is sponsored by InsideTracker.

This week’s guest is Nausheen Saumtally. Nausheen is the youngest guest (so far) to be featured on the Midlife Fulfilled podcast.

On this episode, Nausheen shares how she found work-life harmony and how she discovered her talent for speaking and coaching. Considering that in her early development years she struggled with speaking, this discovery is life-altering for Nausheen.

One of the stories she shares is how she was unable to communicate a simple thought or question to her mom in her youth. When she landed a great job at Microsoft (which she says found her), she discovered her gift for speaking, coaching, and personal development.

28 Nov 2022Ep 43 Finding Purpose After Corporate Burnout: A Remarkable Story of Becoming a Podcast Host00:42:43

This episode is sponsored by InsideTracker.

This week’s guest is Lou Blaser.

On this episode, Lou shares her BF (before fulfillment) to AF (after fulfillment) story. It’s a story of a journey that she didn’t even know she would be on. She thought she was just fine in her then-current situation. She didn’t know what she didn’t know about her own fulfillment. Until an event happened that changed everything for her.

Lou arrived at a pivotal point where she needed to answer a question in her midlife season. But, she couldn't answer this question.

I’m going to challenge you to answer this same question. I'm confident it will give you something significant to think about in your own midlife season. It might make you uncomfortable but I promise you that you will want to answer this question!

Additionally, I challenged Lou to take an action. In my takeaway summary, I will issue the very same challenge to you.

Tune in to hear Lou's BF to AF story and the most impactful question she answered in her midlife season that you're going to want to answer too.

05 Dec 2022Ep 44 Transitioning from Corporate to Creative: A Journey to Becoming an Author a Coach and Healer00:38:01

This episode is sponsored by InsideTracker.

On this episode, Tamara Schenk shares her BF (before fulfillment) to AF (after fulfillment) story. Her story highlights three key affirmations that created transformation in her midlife career transition journey.

  1. She realized where she was experiencing fulfillment and wanted more of that.
  2. Her understanding of what was a waste of her time, skills, and energy.
  3. How both of these realizations fit together like a puzzle to create transformation in her career transition journey.

Tamara came to a point of transformation when not one but two cats in her life inspired her to write a book she titled Soul Cats. And, now she helps people and cats overcome trauma.

This episode is not about cats, although Tamara explains how her cats influenced her midlife career transition. It's about transformation.

My challenge to you is to embrace the takeaway from Tamara's story which I reveal on the other side of the interview with Tamara.

Tune in to hear Tamara Schenk's BF to AF story and discover how the insights behind her midlife career transformation can impact your current midlife season.

19 Dec 2022Ep 46 From Exhaustion to Fulfillment: A Speaker’s Painful Journey of Self-Actualization on the Water00:39:51

Andrew Davis is a best-selling author and keynote speaker.

On this episode, Andrew (Drew) shares how he finds fulfillment and joy in boating. Drew's BF (before fulfillment) to AF (after fulfillment) story is about his realization that he knows where to go to experience a moment of 100% fulfillment.

In this episode, I came away with three key realizations of my own.

  1. It's possible to have moments of 100% fulfillment.
  2. I don't have a boat, but I have "a boat" of my own for midlife fulfillment.
  3. Everyone should strive to have "a boat" of their own for midlife fulfillment.

Today, Drew is a globe-trotting keynote speaker and is at the top of my list of favorite keynote speakers. Drew says that everywhere he travels, he makes a point of getting on the water if it's at all possible.

After my interview with Drew, I share "my boat" and challenge you to think about "your boat" where you can experience a moment of 100% fulfillment.

Tune in to hear Drew Davis' BF to AF story and discover what "your boat" is where you have moments of 100% fulfillment.

26 Dec 2022Ep 47 The Art of Career Reinvention: An Amazing Journey from LinkedIn to Work as a Speaking Expert00:35:40

Lorraine is a top-rated virtual speaker and leader with 300,000+ followers.

On this episode, Lorraine shares in her BF (before fulfillment) story about how she felt that she had peaked in her then-current job at LinkedIn, and her AF (after fulfillment) story about how she was re-energized and challenged in her new job at Prezi.

In this episode, I have three key takeaways for you to ponder.

  1. The discomfort of change is required for growth.
  2. Stare at the camera during virtual presentations.
  3. You can help me rebrand the definition of midlife.

Lorraine's story is about the dreaded career change that can drive stress and anxiety in all of us. In Lorraine's case, she was working at LinkedIn, where she dreamed of working while she was in college.

Lorraine reached a point where she knew it was time for a change.  She admits to being nervous about leaving the identity she was known for as the face of LinkedIn News.

Tune in to hear Lorraine Lee's BF to AF story and ponder the change you've been putting off in your career or elsewhere in your life.

02 Jan 2023Ep 48 Podcast Navigating Midlife with Success: Expert Interviews and Brand Collaboration 🎤00:19:35

On this episode, I fly solo to share my thoughts, feelings, plans, and aspirations for the Midlife Fulfilled podcast in 2023.

My plan is to publish three types of podcast episodes in 2023.

  1. BF to AF* Stories (about 50% of all episodes).
  2. Midlife Maximum will feature subject matter experts.
  3. Midlife Prominence will feature people of notoriety.

On this episode, I also explain my mission to "rebrand the meaning of midlife."  I present a detailed definition of midlife. Spoiler alert, we spend most of our life going through midlife seasons.

I also share my aspiration to do "docuseries" episodes in collaboration with brands featuring a 3, 4, or 5-part series that educate my listeners on a relevant topic.

I announce that after saying "no" to providing coaching services in 2022 when I was asked, I'll start offering 2 week, 4 week and 12 week career coaching services in 2023.

Lastly, I share two recent personal experiences that touched my heart, one happy and one sad.

I invite you to tune in to hear my thoughts, feelings, plans, and aspirations for the Midlife Fulfilled podcast in 2023.

23 Jan 2023Ep 51 Caring for Elderly Parents: Advice from a Social Gerontologist00:42:08

On this Midlife Maximum episode, you'll meet Benjamin Surmi. Midlife Maximum episodes are informational, and educational in nature.

Benjamin Surmi is a social gerontologist. He is director of education and culture at Koelsch Communities headquartered in Washington state.

In this episode, you’ll hear Benjamin explain what you should consider as an adult child of aging parents or other aging loved ones, and how to plan for their care in their later years. Benjamin explains the options for elder care ranging from a life plan community, independent living, assisted living, memory care, and adult family home care.

We also discuss the role of family dynamics and other factors that shape how families can approach caring for older parents or loved ones.

On the other side of my conversation with Benjamin, I share my personal story of arranging elder care for my parents in their final years. Then, I ask you to consider how this topic may be relevant to you in your life either with your own parents or other aging loved ones in your life.

If you're tempted to think this topic isn't for you, think again. Most of us in a midlife season will deal with this topic. There's a good chance, you'll want to share this episode with someone you know.

30 Jan 2023Ep 52 A New Beginning: How a Second Marriage Led to a Career as an Author, Podcaster, and Blogger00:37:15

Andy Paul is an accomplished author, speaker, blogger, and podcaster. His current career took off after he remarried.

In this episode, Andy's BF (before fulfillment) to AF (after fulfillment) story is about how he took action on aspirations with the support of his wife in a second marriage.  Andy acknowledges his first wife never held him back. He thrived when his current wife asked him "what are you waiting for, go write that book."

In my intro, I caution you not to judge Andy. This is his story and there's a powerful message in it. His circumstance may or may not relate to yours. The message is in the lesson that Andy shares.

Additionally, in this episode, I share a personal story with a lesson I learned that is inspired by Andy's story. I challenge you to find the lesson that is meaningful to you and your fulfillment.

06 Feb 2023Ep 53 Your Path to Self-Discovery: Uncover Your Ancestry and DNA for a Fulfilled Life00:37:42

This week's guest is Miri Rodriguez and this is a BF (before fulfillment) to AF (after fulfillment) episode.

Miri is a senior storyteller for Microsoft, a best-selling author of Brand Storytelling, and owner of Be Mindful, Be Happy. She is also a wife, mom, and cancer survivor.

When Miri Rodriguez was diagnosed with the BRCA mutation gene and given an 87% chance of developing ovarian cancer, she embarked on a journey of self-discovery to heal her body, spirit, and soul and also to reclaim her fulfillment.

After her BRCA mutation gene diagnosis, Miri went on an intense journey of self-reflection and healing. To get to a place of fulfillment, she had to take a break from everyone to focus on her own healing. She eventually realized that her fulfillment was found in getting back to her true self and understanding her ancestry and DNA makeup. Through this journey, she found the courage to fight and remain positive.

Miri shares three key points:

1. Uncover Your Ancestry and DNA Makeup as Part of Your Fulfillment in Life

2. Listen to Your Intuition, Even if it Sounds Crazy

3. Reframe Your Actions and Priorities with Freedom and Love

On the other side of my conversation with Miri, I reveal an epiphany that Miri enabled. You can use this insight to determine your own fulfillment goals.

13 Feb 2023Ep 54 Finding Purpose Through Movement: A Gymnast's Tale of Entrepreneurship by Empowering Employee Wellness00:36:55

In this episode, you’ll meet Laura Putnam in a hybrid BF (before fulfillment) to AF (after fulfillment) and Midlife Maximum episode.

Laura is the founder and CEO of Motion Infusion, a consultancy that helps individuals, teams, and organizations to "get in motion" - and on the path to better health and well-being.

Laura first experienced fulfillment as a young girl through her love of movement in gymnastics. This strong sense of purpose stayed with her into adulthood. She taught high school for a while and after attempting to pursue her dream of becoming a professional dancer in New York City, she discovered that the reality of being a professional dancer wasn't going to materialize.

With no regrets, Laura leveraged her passion for movement and teaching by launching Motion Infusion in 2008 as a consultant, speaker and workshop facilitator on a mission to empower leaders in business to transform their workplace into one where people are healthier, happier, and more likely to be in connection with their dreams.

Through her work, she has gained a global perspective and is dedicated to creating a world where everyone has the opportunity to pursue their dreams and live their best life.

On the other side of my conversation with Laura, I invite you to join me on episode 55 for my takeaway and suggestion for you to consider from this conversation.

15 Feb 2023Ep 55 Dare to Dream: The Power of Giving Yourself Permission00:07:55

Have You Ever Had the Realization That You're Not Pursuing Your Passion?

In this 8-minute episode, I share my takeaway from my conversation with Laura Putnam on episode 54.

Life is a journey full of twists and turns, and it doesn't always go the way we'd like it to. Sometimes, we find ourselves in careers that don't align with our passions or goals, and it can be daunting to make a change.

Laura Putnam realized that she wasn't pursuing her passion. She discovered a disconnect between her dream and her reality. She came to understand that the most common regret dying people have is not living the life they wanted to live.

Laura gave herself permission to pursue her dream of being a professional dancer. And, it didn't work out for her.

When Laura started her company, Motion Infusion, she leveraged her greatest talent -  teaching.  She teaches business leaders about workplace wellness. She inspires them to transform into an oasis of well-being, using her teaching skills and her passion for movement to help others.

Laura is fulfilled by the work she does because it's a culmination of all the previous seasons of her life, including her pursuit of being a dancer, coming together in a meaningful way.

My challenge to you is...

Ask yourself, where are you on the journey of understanding your fulfillment in the pursuit of your dreams? Are you connecting the dots between your dreams and your work?

Correlate Laura's story, beginning with her passion for movement at an early age and how it shaped her as an adult, with your story, and ask yourself if you're giving yourself permission to pursue your passion and your dreams in your current midlife season.

20 Feb 2023Ep 56 Unlocking Fulfillment in Your Relationship with Work Through Co-Creation00:35:10

In this episode, you’ll meet Karen Mangia in a Midlife Maximum episode.

Karen is an internationally-recognized thought leader. Her TEDx appearance, keynotes, blogs, and books reach hundreds of thousands of business leaders each year.

In this Midlife Maximum episode, we’re discussing key principles from her fourth book, Success from Anywhere. When I first heard the title of this book, I thought it was about working remotely. No. That’s what her first book is about, which is titled Working from Home. Success from Anywhere is about your relationship with work.

That’s right, it's about your relationship with work.

Karen reveals the "why" behind this book with logic and personal stories that will provoke the way you think about your relationship with work. On episode 57, a solo midweek episode, I'll give you my takeaway and my challenge for you to consider about your relationship with work

22 Feb 2023Ep 57 How the Pandemic has Reshaped Your Relationship with Work00:09:43

Welcome to another Bernie’s takeaway episode. Listen to episode 56 featuring Karen Mangia before you listen to this takeaway recap.

Your work is not just about earning money or paying bills. Work has become an integral part of our lives, something that defines us and gives us a sense of purpose. However, the global pandemic has forced us to redefine our relationship with work, and Karen Mangia's book, "Success from Anywhere," provides help and hope to those who are struggling to find their place in this new reality.

The book encourages us to think about work as a place for everyone to live well and work well, to look at things through the lens of co-creation, and to prioritize what matters most.

The book is a recommended read for anyone looking to understand your current relationship with work.

I’ll leave you with this thought…I’ll call it my challenge…You know I like to offer you a challenge.

Answer this question…What is your relationship with work? Framing it this way forces you to think about the role of work in a different way. The word “relationship” requires you to think of work differently. Do you like your work? Do you love your work? Where is your work in priority rank order in your life? All of these questions add up to “your relationship with work.”

Understanding your relationship with work can help you decide things that you may want to change, or not, depending on how you answer the question, “what is your relationship with work?”

27 Feb 2023Ep 58 How to Embrace Adversity and Find Greatness Within You00:29:49

In this episode, you’ll meet Marcia Donziger in a BF (before fulfillment) to AF (after fulfillment) episode.

Marcia was diagnosed with Stage 3 ovarian cancer and was told that she would never have children at the age of 27. She went into remission at age 28 and six months later she got divorced. Marcia experienced a lot of adversity at a young age. Yet, she used each adversity as a stepping stone in her life. Marcia knew that she was meant for great things!

Marcia started a non-profit that has been a blessing to many people. She just released a new book titled: You Are Meant for Great Things.  And, now she is a new season of life that you’re going to hear about in this episode.

01 Mar 2023Ep 59 Your Story Can be a Blessing to Others Because Your Story Matters00:08:48

On this solo takeaway episode, you'll hear my thoughts and suggestion for you to consider from my conversation with Marcia Donziger on episode 58.

Marcia Donziger's words of wisdom have stayed with me since our podcast recording. Her message was simple yet powerful: whatever adversity you face in life, embrace it as part of your story.

Marcia suggests embracing the 3 Ps: Pause, Pivot, and Propel. Take a moment to pause and reflect on your situation, pivot to find a new direction or way forward, and then propel yourself forward with renewed energy and purpose.

Of course, the 3 Ps will look different for everyone, and that's okay. Your story is unique, and no one else has experienced what you have. So, make your 3 Ps count and apply them in your own way to your story.

Remember that your story matters and it can be a blessing to others. By embracing your adversity and finding a way to move forward, you can inspire and help others who may be facing similar challenges.

I’ll leave you with this thought…I’ll call it my challenge…You know I like to offer you a challenge.

Find a way to embrace the 3 Ps in your own story. Take ownership of your adversity experiences and let them shape you, however they need to shape you. Don't resist it.

Your story matters. Others may need to hear your story to be blessed by it.

06 Mar 2023Ep 60 Finding Fulfillment in Midlife Through Serving and Giving00:32:59

In this BF (before fulfillment) to AF (after fulfillment) episode, Mike McKeown shares his transition from a focus on traditional things like career, family, and finances to living a life pleasing to God.

Mike wants to leave a lasting impact, and he discovered true fulfillment by doing what his creator has gifted him with.

Here are the key points we discussed:

  • Mike's goal was to build up a spiritual heritage and leave a legacy. He read the book "Die Broke" in 1993, which encouraged him to spend his money making memories and helping others. He realized that true fulfillment comes from doing what your creator has gifted you with. He didn't want to be on his deathbed wishing he had spent more time living life with God's purpose.
  • Mike started a ministry with a friend called BibleBagMinistry.org, where he gives out Bible bags to people and meets their needs by giving out blankets, hats, and food.
  • Mike encourages everyone to do their own research and come to their own conclusion about the existence of God, the truth of the Bible, and the resurrection of Jesus.

Mike's story is an inspiration to anyone who is searching for fulfillment and purpose in life. He found his purpose by serving and giving to others, and by living a life pleasing to God.

As you listen to this episode think about how you're living your life according to the gifts given to you by your creator.

08 Mar 2023Ep 61 Living With No Fear: Why Planning Your Death Can Be Joyful00:17:58

On this midweek solo episode, I share with you my main takeaway from my conversation with Mike McKeown on episode 60.

Mike made two key points. One is that he found a meaningful purpose later in life beyond the usual career, family,  and finances. In Mike's case, he discovered the meaning of fulfillment through serving others, which is pleasing to God.

In this solo takeaway episode, I chose to focus on Mike's other point about reconciling your relationship with your creator by making a conscious decision about your beliefs pertaining to your life after death.

On this episode, I share my personal journey to faith and my beliefs about life after death. My journey wasn't a straight path. It didn't happen overnight. I was influenced in part by the story of Lee Strobel who wrote the book The Case for Christ (and 19 other books).

As you listen to me share Lee Strobel's story and how it influenced me, I challenge you to think about what plans you have made for your eternity. If that sounds like an odd question, I'll remind you that the death rate is 100%. I'm going to die someday. You're going to die someday.  What are your plans?

13 Mar 2023Ep 62 Business Transition Planning in Midlife Creates the Life You Want to Live00:34:56

In a Midlife Maximum episode, Elizabeth Ledoux joins us to talk about her mission to help successful people transition from business ownership to live the life they want.

As CEO of The Transition Strategists, Elizabeth creates programs for business owners' transitions to their next chapter to keep communities healthy by keeping businesses healthy, soccer games playing, money flowing, and relationships going.

Her aim is to help business owners transition their assets to others, and create a ripple effect through an entire community.

Elizabeth believes that mom-and-pop businesses are the backbone of society, and when a business shuts down, it’s a big loss in a community or family. She encourages business owners to believe that transition planning could be the most important thing they do in their careers.

Elizabeth also talks about her Pathfinder Program, which helps people find their next adventure and a new purpose, whether or not they are a business owner. She encourages people to engage in self-discovery to find their self-purpose, and not to be afraid of retirement. When a business owner begins planning their transition, it creates opportunities for others, but they can be terrified if they haven’t found a purpose for their next adventure.

15 Mar 2023Ep 63 The Evolution of Your Purpose: Why Midlife Transition is Inevitable00:10:03

On this solo midweek episode, I share my takeaway from my conversation with Elizabeth Ledoux on episode 62.

In my conversation with Elizabeth, we discussed that transitions for most business owners are inevitable. And, transitions can apply to all of us. Whether you're a business owner or not, planning a transition begins with finding your purpose.

If you're unhappy with your job in your current midlife season, instead of searching for a new job, focus on discovering your current purpose. What are you really good at? Do you have a hobby that you love that could become a viable business? Sometimes, we have to take action to see if we would love it as a job and to learn if it would be fulfilling.

It all starts with your "why," your purpose. For me, my why is educating and inspiring midlife people to find fulfillment. Shockingly, 78% of people I surveyed are not fulfilled.

Your purpose evolves throughout your lifetime, so don't get caught up in the treadmill of life. Take the time to ask yourself, "What is my current purpose?" Consider asking someone close to you. Others may see something in you that you don't see in yourself.

Catch my solo takeaway episode and commit to revisiting your current purpose. When was the last time you answered this question? Go ahead, ask yourself, what is your purpose?

20 Mar 2023Ep 64 Discovering Your Midlife Encore: Notre Dame's Inspired Leadership Initiative00:33:22

Episode 64 features Tom Schreier, founding director of the Inspired Leadership Initiative (ILI) at the University of Notre Dame.

ILI is a different kind of higher education, offering "encore education" to people who are looking to find their purpose in their next stage of midlife season.

Encore education refers to the growing trend of adults seeking secondary education after completing their careers. It's designed to help people think broadly and thoughtfully about their purpose, as they pivot to a new stage in life.

ILI enables participants to attend with a community of like-minded people, where they enjoy making connections with others like them as well as university students and faculty.

You'll hear Tom Schreier, explain how he found himself at a crossroads in his accomplished career when he was invited to start this new program at Notre Dame.

ILI attendees, called fellows, don't receive a degree but instead leverage the resources of Notre Dame to discover an encore after their careers. Fellows interact with faculty, students, and each other, creating a dynamic that benefits everyone involved. ILI fellows are organized into cohorts, and each program runs from August through May, mirroring a full school year.

Prospective fellows should be finished with their careers and receptive to discerned transformation. Curiosity, open-mindedness, and a willingness to change one's identity are crucial traits for those looking to engage in encore education.

ILI is designed to help individuals ensure that the remaining decades of their lives are as purposeful and valuable as possible. The Inspired Leadership Initiative is reshaping how we view education and personal growth in later life.

Catch my upcoming Bernie's takeaway episode from my conversation with Tom Schreier on episode 65. But, start now with episode 64 to catch my full conversation with Tom.

22 Mar 2023Ep 65 Finding Purpose in Midlife Through Discerned Transformation00:07:09

Welcome to my takeaway episode for my conversation with Tom Schreier on episode 64.

Tom Schreier is the Founding Director of the Inspired Leadership Initiative (ILI) at the University of Notre Dame. Tom shared his journey to becoming the founding director of ILI, and his mission to help individuals in their midlife to find purpose and meaning in their life after completing a core career. These people know they have more to give but they don't know what they want to do next.

I highly encourage you to listen to the full conversation with Tom on the previous episode.

My Key Takeaways:

  • Tom emphasized how ILI is looking for people who, after completing their career are receptive to discerned transformation. They're curious and willing to think broadly about what they may want to do in their next chapter.
  • The ILI program seeks people who are excited to engage in conversations and experience a self-discovery process that is crucial to finding purpose in this midlife chapter.
  • Tom also explained how the ILI program is considered "encore education," where individuals in midlife have the opportunity to discover a new encore that can be their next chapter.

These three principles tie together into one cohesive mindset of people who know they can be a force for good in a new chapter in their life and they're willing to explore it in the ILI program in order to find it.

If you're interested in learning more about ILI and how this encore education program at the University of Notre Dame can help you find purpose in midlife, visit their website ili.nd.edu

27 Mar 2023Ep 66 From Dentist to Podcasting: A Journey to Personal Development Mastery00:35:57

Episode 66 features Agi Keramidas, the host of the Personal Development Mastery podcast. Agi's BF (before fulfillment) to AF (after fulfillment) story explains that he is a dentist originally from Greece who moved to the UK in 2010.

In 2015, Agi completed a master's degree in aesthetic dentistry, but instead of feeling motivated to put his new knowledge into practice, he found himself completely unmotivated and wondering what was wrong with him.

Agi shares his personal development journey that led him to discover his passion for podcasting and his mission to share his learnings on personal development with others.

Throughout this episode, you learn about Agi's journey, including how attending a live Tony Robbins event helped him to overcome his fear of public speaking. We hear about Agi's love for podcasting and how it has allowed him to be creative and reach people around the globe. We also learn about Agi's fulfillment from his guest interviews and how he distills the lessons he learns into actionable points on his podcast.

Agi's story is a reminder that when we feel unfulfilled or discontent, we should take action.  As Agi says, "Do the thing you know you need to do but you've been putting it off. Do it now!"

29 Mar 2023Ep 67 Failure is Not Optional On Your Journey to Midlife Fulfillment00:10:55

Welcome to my takeaway episode from my conversation with Agi Keramidas.

Agi Keramidas is a dentist turned personal development coach and host of the Personal Development Mastery podcast.

Agi shares his personal development journey, which began when he realized he was unmotivated to put into practice new skills from a Masters's Degree in Aesthetic Dentistry.

He began reading books and attending seminars outside of dentistry. He attended a Tony Robbins live event in London, which was a lightbulb moment for him. He discovered his fear of public speaking and then took a five-day public speaking course, which boosted his confidence.

He started his podcast in 2018 as a hobby and now has 298 episodes at the time of this recording. (I was his guest on episode 298!)

Agi's personal development journey includes taking action to address what he discovered about himself. Agi's advice is to do the thing you need to do that you've been putting off.

What if you don't know what you need to do?

Wayne Gretzky, famously said, "You're guaranteed to not score a goal when you don't shoot the puck at the goal."

Taking some action gives you a chance of making progress on the thing you need to do. Taking no action is a guarantee of no progress.

Listen to this take away episode to consider this challenge. Share it with someone you know.

03 Apr 2023Ep 68 The Value of Experience: Insights from AARP for Workers Age 40-Plus00:29:46

Welcome to this Midlife Fulfilled Maximum episode featuring Carly Roszkowski, Vice President of Financial Resilience at AARP.

Carly and I dive into the key findings of AARP's report titled "The Value of Experience: An Examination of Workers Ages 40-Plus," which is updated every five years. The most recent update was published in January 2023 and was based on a survey taken by 2,000 respondents over the age of 40 in the US labor force.

Carly shares that AARP is the nation's largest non-profit, non-partisan organization dedicated to empowering people to choose how they live as they age, with 38 million members.

We discussed conversationally the report's key findings:
Nearly all workers aged 40 and over seek employment that has meaning.

Work-life balance is essential, with over 40 million caregivers in the US and many workers requiring flexibility to care for loved ones.

Workplace flexibility has become a key requirement for accepting a new job, with hybrid work environments becoming more acceptable to employers.

Age discrimination persists in the workplace, with the majority of workers experiencing or witnessing it.

The report also shows that workers want to grow professionally, feel valued, included, and accepted, and bring a ton of value to an organization.

Carly shares that AARP uses these findings to speak with industry organizations, employers, and HR departments about including age in their DEI programs, the type of benefits that can hire and retain workers over 40, and the Employer's Pledge Program, where employers pledge to be an age-inclusive culture.

Carly is quick to emphasize that workers over age 40 have a wealth of experience, leadership, mentorship, and soft skills to offer, making them an asset to any organization.

05 Apr 2023Ep 69 Beyond the Midlife Crisis: Feeling Valued in the Workplace00:08:39

In this Takeaway episode, I discuss the findings of the AARP report titled "The Value of Experience: An Examination of Workers Ages 40-Plus," from my conversation with Carly Roszkowski on episode 68.

We discussed the key takeaways from the report, including the importance of meaningful work, work-life balance, workplace flexibility, and professional growth. We also delve into the reality of age discrimination and the benefits of a blended workforce of multiple generations.

Key Takeaways from the Report:

Workers over 40 seek employment that has meaning and feel valued, included, and accepted.

Work-life balance and workplace flexibility are crucial for accepting job offers.

Age discrimination persists in the workplace, and the majority supports strengthening age discrimination laws.

Professional growth is a priority.

The blended workforce of multiple generations is a reality, and it requires respect and a servant's mindset to be successful.

Tips for Thriving in Midlife Careers:

Treat all colleagues with respect and have a servant's mindset.

Be accountable and demonstrate a willingness to pull your weight and support your team.

If you're a leader, lead out in front with humility, a strong work ethic, and support for your team.

Partner with colleagues to complement each other's strengths and weaknesses.

Foster a positive work environment by partnering with your team to have the best possible experience.

My Takeaway Challenge:
Those of us over the age of 40 have a ton of wisdom, experience, and skills. I challenge you to go out of your way to foster a collaborative work environment with a servant's mindset. Partner with your colleagues to achieve the best possible experience for you and for your coworkers.

10 Apr 2023Ep 70 From Florida to Hollywood: He Found Fulfillment through Authenticity00:30:56

Episode 70 features Brandon Rodriguez in a BF (before fulfillment) to AF (after fulfillment) episode.

Brandon moved to Hollywood (CA) from Florida in his mid-twenties to pursue a career in acting. While he has experienced many good things in his film career, he realized after a few years that he was not being authentic, and this became a major struggle for his fulfillment.

For instance, Brandon was ashamed to admit he grew up in Florida, and this feeling of shame prevented him from being his true authentic self. During Covid, he recognized that he needed to deal with this. He gave himself permission to see a therapist and started attending a weekly men's group that meets every Thursday. This group of guys has become a significant part of his life, as they meet, talk, and hold each other accountable.

Through this journey, Brandon has learned what it means to be authentic. He realized that he needed to embrace who he really is with complete authenticity. He has found that being true to himself has brought him the most fulfillment in his life in Los Angeles.

Listen to hear Brandon's story and the lessons he has learned on his journey from Florida to Hollywood and his journey to fulfillment by embracing authenticity.

On my midweek episode 71, I'll share my takeaways from my conversation with Brandon and a challenge for you to consider on this topic. Start by listening to my full conversation with Brandon here on episode 70.

12 Apr 2023Ep 71 What's Stopping You from Living Your Most Authentic Life?00:12:09

Welcome to my takeaway episode from my conversation with Brandon Rodriguez on episode 70 about overcoming inauthenticity to find fulfillment.

After he moved from Florida to Hollywood to become an actor, he came to realize that he lacked authenticity and struggled with coming to terms with it. He knew that he had been inauthentic in some situations and he knew he needed to hold himself accountable and deal with this.

Brandon shared that his upbringing gave him a strong foundation because his parents gave him unconditional love.

Brandon found resources to help him through his struggle with authenticity, including a therapist and a diverse group of guys who meet weekly and hold each other accountable.

We discussed how authenticity is a key part of the maturation process, and how it is an important part of finding fulfillment.

I challenge listeners to identify if you lack authenticity in any of the big four areas of your life: workplace, relationships, social media, or community.

I encourage you to take accountability if you lack authenticity in any of these areas and decide what action steps you will take to address it. This could include seeing a therapist, finding an accountability group, journaling, or prayer/meditation.

Also, ask yourself what is the impact on your life if you do nothing about inauthenticity in some area of your life.

This is my big take away from my conversation with Brandon Rodriguez. If you have your own takeaway, share it with me through one of my contact details below.

Remember, this takeaway episode is no substitute for my full conversation with Brandon!

17 Apr 2023Ep 72 Unlocking Your Creativity Can Help You Find Fulfillment in Midlife00:34:30

Episode 72 features Anne Witherspoon in a BF (before fulfillment) to AF (after fulfillment) episode.

Anne shares three BF to AF stories. The common theme among the three stories is her desire to find fulfillment by trying to do too much between her career, her family life, and her extracurricular activities.

Anne says that these burnouts led to a breakthrough when she allowed herself to unlock her creativity by writing a book. While she hopes her book Unicorn Leadership is helpful to others, she admits she had to get it out of her head for her own fulfillment.

Anne encourages us to discover our creativity, harness it and do good with it for our own fulfillment. If your creativity helps others, that's icing on the cake.

Listen to hear Anne's three BF to AF stories and the lessons she has learned.

On my midweek episode 73, I'll share my takeaways from my conversation with Anne and a challenge for you to consider on this topic. Start by listening to my full conversation with Anne here on episode 72.

19 Apr 2023Ep 73 Awaken Your Creative Spirit to Find Fulfillment in Midlife00:10:52

Welcome to my takeaway episode from my conversation with Anne Witherspoon on episode 72 about her three BF to AF journeys culminating in harnessing her creativity and finding fulfillment.

In my takeaway episode, I'm discussing the importance of becoming self-aware of our creative talents and how pursuing them can bring tremendous fulfillment into our lives.

Many of us have talents that we may not even be aware of. It's crucial to give ourselves permission to explore and pursue them. When we do, we open up a world of possibilities that can lead to a life filled with creativity and passion.

However, many people are afraid to share their creations with the world. But it's crucial to embrace our creativity and overcome our fear of judgment. We should do it for ourselves and for the fulfillment it brings.

Anne Whitherspoon, who wrote a book to help others avoid mistakes she's made, is a great example of this. She overcame the thought that no one else was interested in her creation and wrote the book for herself.

In midlife, it's important to be mindful of who we are and to discover and pursue our creative talents. If you feel the need to create something, go for it!

My challenge to you is to answer this question.

What is your creative talent? If you know it, what are you doing with it? If you don't know it, there are many ways to find your creative outlet. What have you been putting off such as writing a book, taking guitar or dance lessons, learning to code, mentoring teenagers, or volunteering at an assisted living facility?

Giving yourself permission to find and pursue your creative talent can move the needle on the fulfillment meter in your soul. So, explore your options and see where they take you.

Leave me a voice message to tell me how you're pursuing your creative talents.

24 Apr 2023Ep 74 How Being a Career Rebel Can Lead You to Greater Fulfillment in Midlife00:38:52

On episode 74 you'll meet Dr. Carol Parker Walsh, an award-winning master-certified executive coach, personal brand strategist, and 3x Amazon best-selling author.

Dr. Walsh shares her insights on why it's so hard for people to come to terms with exploring new career options in midlife. She explains the sunk cost syndrome, where individuals have invested years of education and experience and feel that it makes no sense to course-correct. She also talks about the midlife pivot and how other responsibilities, such as aging parents, getting kids through college, saving in a 401K, and having a title and benefits, often encourage midlifers to ride it out until retirement.

She emphasizes that many people have tied their personal identity to their professional identity and never took the time to explore what they really want to do. As children, we dream about our careers, but as we age, we become less focused on our dreams and more practical about choosing a career path that leads to steady employment and the financial ability to have a house and family.

Dr. Walsh points out that doing what you love is not always a source of income. She encourages listeners not to blame themselves and reminds them that they did exactly what was expected of them.

Finally, Dr. Walsh shares that people who were encouraged to follow their dreams by their families when they were young are blessed to have the opportunity to do what they love in their career.

So, if you (or someone you know) are struggling to explore new career options in midlife, this episode is for you.

Tune in to hear Dr. Walsh's insights and advice on how to become a "career rebel" and take control of your professional life.

26 Apr 2023Ep 75 Do This If You're Not Where You Want to Be in Your Midlife Career00:08:52

Welcome to my takeaway episode from my conversation with Dr. Carol Parker Walsh on episode 74 about finding fulfillment in your midlife career.

In my takeaway episode, I'm discussing what you can do to make a career shift in midlife if you're not where you want to be.

If you're not fulfilled in your midlife career, you're not alone. In fact, it's not your fault that you are where you are in your career.

My challenge to you is to answer this question. What are you doing about it? Remember that nothing changes if nothing changes.

Start by owning it.

Be self-aware that you're not where you want to be, and it's not your fault. Then, ask yourself "What am I going to do about it?

What are your current values? If your career doesn't align with your current values, that needs to change. Are you willing to address that imbalance?

Think about all the things you love to do where time flies and you're the most fulfilled.

On this episode, I challenge you to approach this conundrum with the mindset of owning that you're not where you want to be in your career. I remind you that if you believe you can, you're right. If you believe you can't, you're right.

A career rebel adopts the mindset of "I believe I can." A career rebel creates an action plan to find a career chapter that is fulfilling.

Listen to episode 75 and leave me a voice message to tell me how you're aligning your current values with your career.

01 May 2023Ep 76 The Unspoken Rules of Leadership Will Make You a Better Leader00:31:35

In episode 76, you'll meet leadership development expert, Jamie Turner. Jamie provides valuable insights on how to become an effective leader, particularly for those of us in a midlife season. He shares his experience on how to develop leadership skills and the importance of mindset over skillset.

Jamie says that being an effective leader starts with self-awareness. He says to understand what motivates you. Be the authentic version of yourself. Nurture your desire to help others and consider how to manifest this desire into a career.

We discussed how leadership has evolved in recent decades. Jamie says that modern leadership requires true authenticity. Your team wants authenticity from you.

However, Jamie makes a distinction between transparency and authenticity. Your team doesn't want to or need to know intimate details of your life. Too much transparency can be harmful to your relationships.

As a leader, Jamie says it is essential to be a teacher and inspirer for the people around you.

If you (or someone you know) are a leader in business, this episode is for you. Note, several of the principles Jamie discusses can be applied to our personal relationships outside of work.

03 May 2023Ep 77 Take This Test to Measure Your Leadership Effectiveness00:12:33

Welcome to my takeaway episode from my conversation with Jamie Turner on episode 76 about leadership effectiveness.

Jamie is a leadership consultant and coach. He shared key leadership effectiveness principles. In this take away episode, I briefly summarize them and offer two other perspectives.

Key Principles of Leadership

  1. Be self-aware. Know who you are, what motivates you. This will help you to be more effective in leading others.
  2. Work on your mindset first, skillset second. Focus on developing a positive mindset to inspire those around you.
  3. Be authentic. Your team will appreciate your authenticity and be more likely to follow you.
  4. Have purpose and meaning. When you help others achieve their purpose and meaning, they're more likely to follow your leadership.
  5. Follow the unspoken rules of leadership.

Leadership in Your Own Business

If you're a business owner, you can apply these leadership principles to your business.  I explain a scenario where your leadership could be exasperating to your staff if you're not self-aware.

Leadership in Your Personal Life

I share a personal story of my lessons learned and leadership style with my two adult children when discussing situations in their workplace.

My Challenge to You

I challenge you to grade yourself on self-awareness. This is a private exercise. On a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being I'm not in touch with who I am, I don't know my current values, or what motivates me, and 10 being I'm extremely in touch with who I am and I'm living my values in all areas of my life, and I know how to channel this in my leadership roles in the workplace and in my personal life.

I'm confident you'll find this exercise helpful.  Listen to episode 77 and leave me a voice message to tell me your reaction to this test.

08 May 2023Ep 78 How Technology Will Shape a Day in Your life in 205000:39:05

On episode 78 you'll meet futurist Ines O'Donavan, Ph.D., who takes us on a journey into a typical day in the year 2050, organized by technology.

In this future world, our day starts with a smart bed that optimizes our sleep based on our biomarkers, ensuring we wake up refreshed. In the bathroom, the smart toilet analyzes our nutrient levels, while a smart mat at the sink analyzes our posture. The smart mirror analyzes our stress level, checks our calendar, and sends information to the kitchen for a perfectly customized smoothie.

If we need medicine, we can print it out at home. Our morning workout can take place in the metaverse, with exercises customized to our biomarkers, designed by AI. Since 1960, we've been living an additional 20 years, and most of us will be able to halt aging, making us biologically younger.

Smart glasses or contact lenses with a keyboard hologram allow us to work while walking on a treadmill desk. The traditional corporate job is less likely, as businesses will hire skills and we will work in small teams on projects. We'll see people's emotions through the use of color and verbal communication will be aided by brain optimization devices.

In this future world, we may have several emotional biomarkers, and implanting a device in our brains to download information could make the current education system obsolete. Large corporations will downsize, and they will "rent brains" based on the skills needed to accomplish projects.

Ines reminds us that this future is not set in stone and we have the power to shape it through our choices and actions.

Catch my takeaway from this thought-provoking conversation on episode 79.

10 May 2023Ep 79 Future-Proof Your Health and Fulfillment with Technology00:16:15

Welcome to my takeaway episode from my conversation with Ines O'Donovan Ph.D. on episode 78 about how technology will affect your life in 2050.

Ines discussed the many ways technology will influence our life in health, career, and emotional management.

Some of the technologies Ines reveals on episode 78 are available today, albeit in early forms. Go back and listen to my full conversation with Ines to hear the many possibilities.

My Challenge to You

On this episode, I share how I have embraced technology in my career and my life in general. I don't consider myself a technical person. But, I've always been willing to learn about technology and it has served me well.

I cringe when I hear someone over the age of 40 admit they don't embrace technology very much, or at all. My concern is the missed opportunities for anyone with this mindset.

As technology continues to advance such as smart toilets, smart mats, smart mirrors, smart kitchens as well as wearable and implantables, the possibilities for our health and fulfillment are almost inconceivable.

My midlife friend, don't ignore it. Learn about it. Read about it. Watch specials on television when they are available.

You decide if or when you'll adopt smart technology that has the potential to make us biologically younger than our chronological age.

Whatever you do, don't ignore it!

Leave me a voice message to tell me your thoughts on anti-aging smart technology.

17 May 2023Ep 81 Embracing Heart-Centered Wellness for a Fulfilled Midlife00:11:32

Welcome to episode 81 my takeaway episode from my conversation with Dr. Michelle Robin on ep 80. Dr. Michelle Robin summarized key principles from her book E Factor: Engage, Energize, Enrich. Dr. Robin also explained the 4 quadrants of well-being:

Mechanical
Chemical
Energetical
Psycho-spiritual

My Thoughts on Dr. Robin's Key Points

I found Dr. Robin's key points to be very insightful and actionable. I especially resonated with her point about having a clear understanding of your purpose in life.

I also agree with Dr. Robin that it's crucial to take care of your mind, body and spirit.

My Challenge to You

My challenge to you my midlife friend is to answer this question. Is your heart in your health and wellness journey?

I know that when my heart is in something, I'm much more likely to succeed. That's why I make sure to get enough sleep, eat a healthy diet, and work out five days each week. These are all things that contribute to my holistic health and well-being.

I encourage you to take some time to think about how much your heart is in your own health and well-being. Are you devoted to doing everything you can reasonably do to take care of yourself and live a life of wellness?

I believe that when you take care of your mind, body and spirit, you're better able to live your best life.

After you listen to this takeaway episode, let me know how much your heart is in your health and well-being journey by leaving me a voice message.

22 May 2023Ep 82 The Queen of Jeans: Diane Gilman's Legacy for Midlife Women00:40:30

On episode 82 you'll meet Diane Gilman, the charismatic, pearl-haired “Queen of Jeans.” At 77 years young, Diane is an inspiration for women embracing their third act.

She's the top Teleretailing brand globally, with her DG2 Jeans line on HSN becoming a sensation, generating over $100 million dollars a year in retail sales domestically and internationally. Diane is the author of “Too Young to be Old,” and the host of the YouTube video podcast, Aging with Grace 55+.

Diane was born to an older mother who instilled in her the belief that life as a woman was over by age 30.

At 58, Diane, a designer, couldn't find a pair of jeans that fit her changing body. So she designed her own. Despite rejections from jeans makers, the new female CEO of QVC/HSN gave her an opportunity. Diane's jeans sold out within minutes, leading to a $100M per year business.

Diane views her life as a Broadway play, with the third act being a celebration. She believes in having a purpose, drawing from her experiences, and being the boss of her life.

Diane has reinvented herself with a new podcast on YouTube called Aging with Grace 55 Plus. She views her podcast as a platform for her voice to help her generation of women. She believes in the power of purpose and impact and encourages women to follow their hearts and dreams.

Diane's journey through her husband's and her own cancer battle has made her more empathetic, sympathetic, and grateful. She believes her purpose is to brighten up the day for women in midlife, helping them feel valued.

Diane Gilman is a woman who is truly too young to be old.

24 May 2023Ep 83 The Midlife Makeover: How to Reinvent Yourself with Your New Purpose00:10:24

On episode 83, I share my takeaway from my conversation with Diane Gilman on episode 82.

Diane Gilman is a fashion designer who found success in her 50s with a line of jeans designed for women her age. She has since sold over 21 million pairs of jeans and has become known as the Queen of Jeans in teleretail.

In this episode, I share some of the key takeaways from my conversation with Diane.

  • It's never too late to reinvent yourself. Diane was 58 years old when she "invented" her jeans line. She followed her heart and created a product that women in her age range needed.
  • Embrace the hard times. Even though Diane's battle with stage 3 breast cancer was difficult, she emerged a kinder, more empathetic person.
  • Use your experiences to find your purpose. Diane's purpose now is to inspire women in their 50s and beyond to follow their hearts.
  • It's never too late to dream big. No dream is too small. Follow your dreams.
  • Most of us are on a purpose journey, including me.

My Challenge to You

Most of us have something that our heart is telling us to do, but we're not taking action.

I challenge you to be honest with yourself and admit what your heart is telling you. Then, take some action on it.

I'm talking to myself as much as I'm talking to you. I'm still on my own purpose journey, but I'm listening to my heart and taking action.

We all have a purpose in life. When we find our purpose and live it out, we are more fulfilled and we can make the world a better place.

So, what is your purpose? What is your heart telling you to do?

I challenge you to find out and live it out. The world needs you.

29 May 2023Ep 84 Unveiling the Bias of Ageism: An Insightful Discussion with Ashton Applewhite00:34:55

Welcome to episode 84 a Midlife Maximum episode, featuring Ashton Applewhite, a renowned ageism activist and author of the book This Chair Rocks: A Manifesto Against Ageism.

Ashton is a leading voice in the fight against ageism and has been featured in New York Times, National Public Radio, the New Yorker, and the American Society on Aging as an expert on ageism and named as a Fellow by the Knight Foundation, Yale Law School, and the Royal Society for the Arts.

In this Maximum episode, Ashton talks about the history of ageism, the cost of ageism, how to recognize it, and what we can do to fight it.

She explains how ageism has a significant cost to individuals, families, and society as a whole.

Ashton also emphasizes that ageism is a real problem with real consequences. We can all play a role in fighting ageism by challenging our own ageism and speaking out against ageism when we see it.

31 May 2023Ep 85 Positive Aging is Your Secret to Health and Longevity00:12:52

Welcome to Episode 85, a takeaway episode from my conversation with renowned ageism activist, Ashton Applewhite and author of the book "This Chair Rocks - A Manifesto Against Ageism."

On episode 84, Ashton explains that understanding aging can reduce fear and bias, and improve health outcomes. She shares that people better informed about aging feel better about it, leading to fewer health problems. Ashton references Becca Levy's research, indicating that positive beliefs about aging can aid recovery from mild cognitive impairment.

In this takeaway episode, I share my personal takeaway from our conversation, underpinned by a survey I conducted in 2022. Among the findings, the top areas for life improvement were physical fitness (72%) and physical health (58%). This ties in with Ashton's closing thought - if you're less ageist, you're likely to live longer, heal quicker, and maintain cognitive health.

On this episode, I share a true story about my 92-year-old father-in-law, who, despite suffering a mild stroke, continues in the volunteer role of president of a local community theater. His positive view of aging and his purposeful involvement in the community theater is a testament to the health benefits of a positive attitude toward aging.

My challenge to you is to check your ageism and take the age bias test on Becca Levy’s website.

Embrace age pride, be positive about your own aging, and possibly contribute to your good health and longevity. That's my wish for you!

05 Jun 2023Ep 86 How Acupuncture Can Improve Your Health in Midlife00:33:38

On episode 86 we delve into the fascinating world of acupuncture with Alexa Bradley Hulsey.

Alexa found her calling when she visited an acupuncture school and felt an immediate sense of belonging. Today, Alexa works independently, adopting a community treatment model that allows her to see 6 to 8 patients per hour at a more affordable rate for her patients.

Alexa takes us through the basics of acupuncture, explaining the concepts of blood, chi, yin, and yang. These elements are all about balance and harmony, and how they interact within our bodies can affect our health.

Acupuncture has a wide range of uses including treating pain, back and joint pain, arthritis, headaches, dermatological conditions, stress, anxiety, depression, hormonal conditions, digestive disorders, skin conditions, and allergies.

Alexa emphasizes that acupuncture treatments are highly individualized, taking into account the duration and severity of the condition, as well as any other health issues the patient may have.

Alexa also discusses how acupuncture can help with the changes that come with midlife such as joint pain, digestion issues, hormonal changes, and reactions to food and drink. The goal is to treat both the symptom (the "branch") and the cause (the "root").

Alexa reminds us that the changes we experience in midlife can be an invitation to form a deeper, more loving relationship with our bodies. Acupuncture, she believes, can be a powerful tool in this journey of self-love and healing.

07 Jun 2023Ep 87 My Voice Box Battle and the Promise of Acupuncture Treatment00:12:25

Welcome to episode 87, a takeaway from my conversation with Alexa Bradley Hulsey on episode 86, where we delved into the health benefits of acupuncture.

Alexa, a board-certified acupuncturist since 2005, shared her journey from social work to acupuncture, driven by her fascination with this ancient Chinese medicine. She adopted a community treatment model to make acupuncture affordable to more patients, focusing on balancing blood, chi, yin, and yang for optimal health.

Acupuncture can treat a range of conditions including pain, stress, anxiety, depression, hormonal imbalances, digestive disorders, skin conditions, allergies, and more. Alexa's approach treats both the symptom and the cause, tailoring treatments to each patient's needs. She often works with midlifers experiencing changes in body movement, digestion, hormones, and reactions to food and drink.

On this episode, I share a personal struggle I've never discussed before: my battle with muscle tension dysphonia (MTD), a voice disorder that affects the efficiency of the voice box due to tight muscles around the larynx. As a podcaster, my voice is crucial, and the constant throat clearing, voice fatigue, and degradation in voice quality after meals have been a significant nuisance.

Despite trying medication and voice therapy, my MTD persists. However, Alexa suggested that acupuncture could potentially help with my MTD. I'm excited to explore this treatment option and will update you on my progress in a few months.

My Challenge to You
Do you have a health issue that might benefit from acupuncture? If so, why not give it a try? Do you have a friend who could benefit from learning about the health virtues of acupuncture? Share this episode with a friend.

12 Jun 2023Ep 88 How You Can Harness AI for Midlife Career Advancement00:40:52

In this episode, you'll meet Paul Roetzer, founder of the Marketing Artificial Intelligence Institute (MAII). Paul shares his journey from being inspired by IBM Watson's Jeopardy win in 2011 to exploring the potential of AI in marketing strategy and midlife careers.

Paul wondered if AI could be a marketing intelligence engine, capable of predicting campaign outcomes and making recommendations based on consumer behavior.

Paul's research in 2014 revealed AI's prevalence in logistics and healthcare, with tech giants like Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and Facebook building AI research labs. The acceleration of AI into intelligent devices and the introduction of ChatGPT in 2022 have significantly impacted many industries.

The episode also explores AI's impact on midlife careers, with Paul expressing his belief that AI will be a net positive, assisting in various jobs, from accounting to customer service.

Paul advises listeners to embrace AI technology, predicting that those who use it responsibly will have an advantage. He shares an example of how someone who embraces AI might create a new job to operationalize it at their place of employment.

Paul also touches on the ethical considerations of AI, expressing concern about misinformation, elections, human resource information, and fake videos. He emphasizes the importance of public education on AI and recommends sources for further learning, including books like "Human and Machine" and "The Algorithmic Leader," and following AI researchers on Twitter.

Paul remains optimistic about the net-positive global impact of AI, believing that the good outcomes can outweigh the downside risks. He also shares his educational efforts, including a free AI class at MAII and his weekly podcast, "The Marketing AI Show."

Tune in to this episode to learn about the transformative power of AI in midlife careers, and how you can prepare for its impact today.

15 Jun 2023Ep 89 AI Might be Your Midlife Career Secret Weapon00:10:21

In this takeaway episode, I reflect on my conversation with Paul Roetzer, founder and CEO of the Marketing Artificial Intelligence Institute (MAII), from episode 88. Paul discusses the potential of AI and its impact on our midlife careers, emphasizing the need for education and upskilling. He also addresses ethical considerations of AI and shares his educational resources.

Key Takeaways:

AI is not going away: AI is accelerating at “the speed of sound.” We're already using AI in software like Gmail, Outlook, and in recommendations by Amazon, Netflix, and social media feeds.

AI's impact on careers: Paul suggests that every knowledge worker will be impacted by AI. Ignoring AI could be career limiting or even detrimental.

AI in various fields: AI can potentially assist in fields like healthcare, guiding surgeons to perform procedures with optimal outcomes. In writing, AI can help generate ideas or story outlines, though it currently lacks the ability to replicate human emotion.

My Challenge to You
Experiment with AI, at a minimum with ChatGPT to learn how you can use it. Study how AI is being used or might be used in your industry.

If you're a business owner, discuss with your clients how you can use AI in your service or product delivery.

Remember, this episode is no substitute for the full conversation with Paul Roetzer on episode 88.

22 Jun 2023Ep 91 Three Things You Must Consider in Your Caregiving Journey00:14:12

In this takeaway episode, I reflect on my conversation with aging and caregiving expert Amy Goyer, from episode 90.

My takeaway from this conversation can be summarized in three key things that you should plan in your caregiving journey.

1. Caregiving is something that most of us will have to do at some point, so just expect it to be a part of your life at some point. It's important to approach it with a positive attitude.

2. Planning with a financial planner is important to manage risks and familiarize yourself with available services. If you have siblings include them in the planning when it comes to caregiving for parents or loved ones.

3. Self-care is crucial for caregivers and should be prioritized, even with small acts like making a cup of coffee or attending support groups.

In this episode, I share my personal journey as the caregiver for my parents, who passed away in 2014 (mom) and 2016 (dad).

Visit the free resources available for caregivers, such as AARP's Caregivers discussion group on Facebook and free caregiving guides and state caregiver resources linked up below.

My challenge to you is to expect to be a caregiver and do some planning for it.

26 Jun 2023Ep 92 Unlock the Benefits of Fitness in Midlife for Your Body and Brain00:36:03

On episode 92, you'll meet Jay Croft, a journalist by trade. Jay shares his personal journey to discovering how to channel his journalism craft to the world of fitness for people in midlife.  Jay writes for gym owners, helping them attract the over 50 crowd.

Jay explains the importance of exercise being the miracle drug for aging, and how it can lead to an extended quality of life, allowing for activities like hiking and skiing and playing with grandkids.

Jay points out that some people in midlife associate exercise with getting big muscles, which they don't want. That's why he helps gym owners educate their communities on the benefits of exercise for aging by dispelling myths about exercise being boring or only for getting big muscles.

In addition, Jay talks about the benefits of exercise on mental health, range of motion, and cognitive function. Exercise can stimulate new pathways and improve memory and cognitive connections as we age. Exercise can also have social benefits, reducing social isolation and improving mood.

Listen to episode 92 to learn more valuable insights on how to discover your "why" for an exercise routine that can add joy to your Midlife Fulfilled journey!

29 Jun 2023Ep 93 Vanity is Not the Only Motivation for Your Midlife Fitness Health00:13:01

This is my takeaway episode pertaining to episode 92 with Jay Croft. Here are three key takeaways that really resonated with me.

1️⃣ The focus of our fitness plan in midlife should be on maintaining a functional body rather than pursuing vanity-related goals like having big muscles or a six-pack. It's about ensuring our bodies can perform daily tasks and enjoy life as we age.

2️⃣ It's very important to understand your "why" when it comes to exercise. Discovering your motivation and committing to an exercise routine that benefits both your body and brain is key.

3️⃣ Age-related loss of muscle mass, starts after age thirty, with muscle loss ranging from 3 to 5% per decade. I shared two Harvard Medical study excerpts and one from NIH that explain risks associated with muscle loss, such as decreased mobility, fractures, and falls. Fortunately, exercise is proven to protect memory and thinking skills.

My challenge to you is to know your why for exercise. I assure you that when you know your why, you will be and will remain committed to exercise in midlife.

03 Jul 2023Ep 94 Fulfilling Midlife Dreams through Architecture and Mentorship00:38:22

On episode 94 you'll meet my lifelong friend Ray Rodriguez. In the introduction, I share the backstory of my relationship with Ray. I'm 11 hours older than Ray and he and I consider each other brothers from another mother.

Ray shares his BF (before fulfillment) to AF (after fulfillment) story of finding fulfillment as an architect of a different type. After he gave up his childhood dream of becoming an architect, he found a successful career in sales in the promotional products industry.

After more than 40 years in the industry including several successful corporate positions growing sales and running his own business, he discovered that he is an architect of a different type.  With the long list of people whose careers were greatly impacted by his leadership and mentorship, he realized great fulfillment in architecting businesses' growth strategies and mentoring people's careers.

His work with Big Brother's Big Sisters has led him to a new chapter where he has architected an entrepreneurship course for underprivileged children. His goal is to positively impact as many kids as possible, through mentorship.

06 Jul 2023Ep 95 Connecting Dots from the Past to Discover the Meaning of Fulfillment00:12:55

Episode 95 is a takeaway episode from my conversation with Ray Rodriguez in episode 94.

Ray's childhood aspiration was to become an architect. But, his college guidance counselor advised him to pursue a different career path that aligned with his natural talent and personality. This led Ray to the promotional products industry, where he found success architecting sales teams for growth and people's careers in the promotional products industry.

Ray's passion for helping underprivileged kids and making a positive impact on their lives was a big part of our conversation. He has been involved with Big Brother's Big Sisters and has mentored young boys, instilling in them a sense of pride and the belief that they can achieve their dreams.

On this takeaway episode, I discuss how Ray's story is a powerful reminder that often the path we choose takes twists and turns, ultimately leading to fulfillment in ways we could have never predicted. I also discuss the importance of leaving a legacy and leaving this world a little bit better.

Ray and I are lifelong friends and we share a special bond. We have always been there for each other and plan to be there for each "in the end." In the meantime, both of us are keeping our foot on the gas pedal, doing good, working hard, and striving to leave the world a little better.

If you're enjoying the Midlife Fulfilled podcast, please share it with a friend. My goal is to reach millions of people on the midlife journey, spreading the message of fulfillment.

Remember, my midlife friend, if you're 80% fulfilled, you're doing great!

10 Jul 2023Ep 96 Expert Advice to Navigate Financial Risks and Save for Retirement00:35:03

On this Maximum episode, Jessica Majeski, a wealth management advisor at Northwestern Mutual, shares her expertise to discuss important legacy topics. We discussed retirement planning, long-term care planning, and estate planning. Here are three key summary points that you won't want to miss:

1️⃣ Forgive and start saving again: If you haven't saved enough for retirement, it's never too late to start or re-commit to saving. Jessica shares steps to let go of the past and commit to rebuilding your retirement savings.

2️⃣ Chances are you'll need care: Jessica explains the reality that many of us may need custodial care at some point in our life. Long-term care planning is available to provide the level of care that may be needed. Additionally, she sheds light on the peace of mind it brings to ensure your financial well-being later in life.

3️⃣ Estate planning: Jessica emphasizes the importance of setting up estate planning documents, including advanced directives, living wills, wills, powers of attorney, and more. She shares a client story that highlights the criticality of having a living will in place.

Jessica shares a startling fact from the recent Planning and Progress Study Report from Northwestern Mutual about the discrepancy between the amount that Americans believe they need to have saved for retirement and the average amount actually saved. Spoiler alert, it's a BIG discrepancy!

🔊 Maybe you already know a lot about these topics. I suggest you listen anyway because chances are you know someone who will benefit greatly from the education Jessica delivers in this Midlife Fulfilled Maximum episode on these three critical financial planning topics for any midlife season.

13 Jul 2023Ep 97 Safeguarding Your Financial Future with a Trusted Advisor00:11:48

Welcome to this week's takeaway episode where I reflect on my conversation with Jessica Majeski on episode 96.

Jessica is a wealth management advisor at Northwestern Mutual.  She has been my trusted advisor for eighteen years.

Jessica mentioned on episode 96 that financial planning is never perfect and we should forgive ourselves for mistakes. The key is to be well informed so that you know your options to plan your financial future.

I confessed I didn't want to admit that I needed professional guidance in my financial planning. As a result, I postponed my planning longer than I should have.

I learned why it's important to balance long-term savings while reducing the risk of income loss in the event of illness or injury. And, I couldn't have learned this and more importantly I couldn't have done good planning without guidance from my trusted advisor, Jessica Majeski.

My challenge to you is this. Do you have a trusted financial advisor? If you do, congratulations! If you don't, overcome whatever the reason is that you don't have one and get one. A trusted financial advisor will look out for your best long-term interests and guide you every step of the way.

20 Jul 2023Ep 99 The Reason Doors Close and Open on Your Journey to Midlife Fulfillment00:13:42

This is a takeaway episode from my conversation with Chuck Palm on episode 98 where we discussed:

Embracing Change: Out of necessity, Chuck transitioned from a technical job in the movie industry because of the impact of COVID-19.

Art as Therapy: Chuck's passion for sculpting paved the way for his involvement in art therapy, volunteering to help veterans access treatment and find purpose.

Mind-Body Connection: Chuck prioritized health and fitness in midlife with a commitment to daily exercise resulting in significant health improvements.

Elvis Fandom Pays Off: His affinity for Elvis Presley's "blue-suede shoes" enabled him to realize the impact of being memorable for something unique.

Technology with Purpose: Chuck embraced a role in Crypto and Block Chain, inspired to help people in a return to his career roots in technology.

My Takeaway from Episode 98
Chuck gave himself permission to be open-minded to the fact that doors were closing and doors were opening for a reason.

It can be hard to “give yourself permission” to allow events to unfold as they are unfolding.  This is where faith comes in.

Whatever your faith is in, the evidence is overwhelming that we end up where we were meant to be, with who we were meant to be with, doing what we were meant to be doing.

Chuck said that when he “opened his mind to this,” it got a lot better, a lot easier!

My Challenge to You
Look back on your journey and think about how things have unfolded for you. Can you see evidence of the divine, where things happened that “were supposed to happen, for a reason?”

Rarely do things unfold the exact way we want them to unfold. Often, things unfold against our will. At least until we accept that things are unfolding exactly as they are supposed to unfold.

Maybe you’ll experience what Chuck experienced. Things got easier, they got better. That’s what I want for you.
