It all starts with a question: How can we find, nurture and support organic workplace communities?

With the increasing adoption of workplace collaboration technology such as Microsoft Teams or Slack, there are more communities organically taking root in our organizations.

Today’s chat left us with a plethora of helpful information! The gardening puns & analogies were deep and fruitful (see what I did there?), so hopefully, you will begin to walk the digital hallways and find information to share.

22 Jul 2022Buried Alive? Building a Productivity Ecosystem.00:46:08

With the pace and speed of business at unprecedented levels, how can we better focus on what matters now?

This is the question on the table today with the Learning Rebels Coffee Chat.

For those of you who at times feel overworked, overstretched, or overwhelmed, this podcast episode is for you. Because sometimes all you need is a little nudge, tip, or REALLY helpful tool to help you refocus on what matters most.

Do you feel this way?

“Right now, I have a series of islands without good bridges” - Heather V.

As it stands, distractions are more prevalent, and there never seems to be enough time or resources to do anything, let alone everything. Especially when it's a gorgeous day, and all you want to do is go outside. It's hard not to feel like you are missing out on life because things and lists keep popping up around you.

Remember this - you have a finite number of breaths in your body, do you want to waste them on being stressed out over endless to-do list items and pressures?

I thought not.

05 Feb 2022Helping Managers Support Workplace Learning00:43:58

How do we get learning to stick like super glue when the managers have competing priorities?

This is the big question on the table for this week’s Learning Rebels Coffee Chat.

The reality is there are a bazillion things that stand between a learner and learning application – chief of which is their manager. How do get them to support the learning, and even more importantly, how do we get them to apply critical learning reinforcement efforts?

  • How can we empathize more with the managers balancing act of productivity versus team growth?
  • How do we get managers involved in the actual training?
  • How do we involve management in course design?
  • How can we help build a culture where management involvement is the norm rather than the exception?

13 Jul 2023The When, What and How Behind Knowledge Management Tools00:40:04
It all started with the BIG question on the table.

When it comes to knowledge management tools, how can we leverage them effectively and what features should we be looking for?

A lot of information being shared here!

In our last coffee chat episode, we discussed the benefits of collecting stories and information. In this follow-up podcast, we dive deep into the deep well of knowledge of management tools and explore the latest trends, strategies, and insights that empower L&D professionals in their search for effective knowledge management.

As Learning and Development (L&D) professionals, it is crucial to identify and implement the right knowledge management tools that can help us with curation efforts and also align with the overall organizational need. Once we accomplish this, we facilitate seamless knowledge-sharing and collaboration across people and departments.

Burying information into the dark hole of your LMS system isn't the answer to knowledge management - so we have to think beyond this. I hope this coffee chat gave you some solid ideas to move forward.

03 May 2023Unexpected Discoveries: Encouraging Serendipitous Learning00:46:14
It all started with the BIG question on the table. How can we help create momentum around looking for and “seeing” the unexpected? How can we encourage employees to take the time and explore resources to see new topics for learning and discover new ideas outside their immediate job responsibilities?

This was a fun conversation with many ideas. I found that many of the ideas could also be applied to our Coffee Chat about Creative Debriefing.

Debriefing Video here

Debriefing Podcast Episode here

I like how the conversation included thoughts about our responsibility as L&D people. How are we embracing serendipity? Are we present and aware? If we aren't exploring the environment around us, how can we expect others to do the same?

Here are some quick ideas to encourage exploration:

  1. Let go of control and allow people to explore. This means deviating from the script.
  2. Put up guardrails to help the thinking process. Provide learners with themes to search and discover.
  3. Help to connect discovery to application. Ask deeper questions.
  4. Learn how to uncover stories and then to how to share them. Share this knowledge with participants.
  5. Help participants connect to their surroundings. Promote observational skills.

But it all begins with trust. Sharing unexpected moments requires that the participants trust us with their thoughts and ideas. If we haven't bridged the trust issue, engaging and encouraging deeper learning will be hard.

24 Aug 2022Evaluating Impact00:46:37

The importance of evaluating training impact is something we can all agree on. But it's not something we all do. The reasons are varied:

  • The business doesn't give me time
  • I don't have access to important data
  • The expectation is "butts in seats"

The hard truth is that, when planning learning initiatives for your business, there is an expectation for something to happen. The business expects the people participating in the training to have gained improved skills, demonstrate behavior change, and ultimately to place into action the lessons delivered.

To begin with the end in mind – it's important to think about conducting a skill gap analysis for the future of work

Then couple it with information to evaluate training success – start here with a tool created by Michelle Ockers of the Emerging Stronger team: https://bit.ly/ESImpactTool

Our conversation took us in many directions – The importance of talking the language of business versus learning. Understanding what the business goals are before putting a training plan in place. We also discussed tools we can use to help us along the way. Tools like:

  • Survey’s
  • Work observation
  • Focus groups
  • Pre/post 360 surveys
  • Measuring pre/post KPI’s

We hope you can take one idea to apply Kirkpatricks level 3 & 4 and stop using “butt’s in seats” as your success metric. Because let’s face it, just because you like a class doesn’t mean you’ve learned from it –the same applies, and especially applies to workplace learning.

Take your knowledge to the next level:

02 Aug 2023Educational Comics - A Special AMA with Dr. Kevin Thorn00:53:11
It all started with the BIG question on the table.

Can comics help L&D communicate complex concepts, promote critical thinking, and foster greater learner engagement?

Today we handed the microphone to Dr. Kevin Thorn as he answered all your burning questions about Educational Comics, from which types of comics are appropriate in a training situation to how reach across cultures with comics.

There’s much to consider before we even put pen to paper and start sketching educational comics. Many different details about character development, scene assessment and messaging - all to ensure that we are connecting people to the message, not subliminally creating disengagement through poor structure.

Educational Comics can be a powerful tool in your tool chest and Dr. Kevin helps us understand why.

02 Jun 2022The Bring your Favorite Book Chat00:44:26

What books should be on every L&D professional’s shelf?

This is the question on the table today as we curate books on this “Bring a Book” chat.

We were a small but mighty group, and believe it or not we covered almost 30 books in less than 60 minutes. Some are listed below, some are in the chat discussion.

It's always a 😲 surprising moment when I realize how much good stuff I'm missing out on. You take your eye off the ball for one second and a dozen new, interesting sounding, books pop up.

Here are some further resources to support your reading habit.

02 Nov 2022Inspiring Self-Directed Learning00:46:02

It all starts with a question: How can we inspire people to take ownership of their own professional development?

According to Malcolm Knowles, self-directed learning “describes a process by which individuals take the initiative, with or without the assistance of others, in diagnosing their learning needs, formulating learning goals, identifying human and material resources for learning, and evaluating learning outcomes.”

In Learning and Develop the case becomes, “You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink”.

However, you can add sugar to the water to make it tastier.

Meaning we can do things on our end to encourage and support those who want to dive in and begin the process of taking ownership of deepening the level of their knowledge.

So what can we do to encourage people to take more ownership? This is what we discussed today.

  • Together can we build a map to help people out?
  • To show where and how to start?
  • To help them link concepts together?
  • To learn how to learn?

07 Sep 2023The Skill of Creative Problem Solving: So What, Now What?00:48:02
It all started with the BIG question on the table.

What are the important steps to prepare us and stakeholders for more creative thinking when it comes to learning solutions?

Note: Our previous coffee chat was different. The coffee chat crowd worked through a variety of creative problem solving techniques in break-out rooms and discussed their applicability. And because of this, we didn’t post the audio.

However, this week, we carried over the conversation and focused on the "So What, Now What?" behind our next steps.

Here’s the deal. We can't solve today's problems with yesterday's thinking. The world is simply evolving too quickly. As an L&D function, we must be more innovative and creative in how we treat learning solutions.

However, one man's creative thinking is another man's waste of time. So how do we get everyone on the same page? How can we get our teams and our stakeholders to buy into the idea of thinking creatively?

So today, we talked about the next steps to prepare us and stakeholders for more creative thinking. How do we get stakeholders on board with us, how can we put solid guard rails in place to host the most effective sessions, and what's the follow-up plan?

I hope you follow the conversation to the end - there will be many ideas shared, and I know you will be able to take at least one or two and begin using it today!

So, the big question on the table today is, "What is the ‘So What? Now What?’” and how can we get stakeholders onboard with more innovative thinking?

Stay Curious!

It all started with the big question on the table:

Why are some people good at networking and others, not so much?  What are some practical tips and techniques to build and maintain meaningful connections?

There seems to be a lot of movement in the Learning and Development (L&D) industry. People are changing jobs, changing roles, and getting laid off. With all this movement building your network is critical, and this is the topic we are discussing today.

05 Jul 2023Learning Rebels Live with Christy Tucker00:28:04

Going LIVE with Christy Tucker!

Don’t be fooled by the inherent humbleness of Christy Tucker - this lady knows her stuff! And while most of us know her for her ability to create e-learning designs for companies like Cisco, it was her journey from teacher to designer that caught my interest.

Christy’s journey

I have been lucky enough to be connected with Christy for a few years, and we frequently cross paths at assorted conferences. Christy also just recently hosted a Learning Rebels “Learn Something New Wednesday” about “Creating Branching Scenarios in 90 minutes” - one of our most popular programs! (Go Christy!)

However, I wanted to know how she got here from there. What was her story?

Christy does not disappoint! I can’t believe she got her start as a girls-only middle school MUSIC teacher. It just goes to show, you never know what the universe has in store for you!

Sit back and enjoy the ride.

26 May 2022Virtual Training Extravaganza!00:41:36

Knowing what we know now, how can best prevent Zoom Zombies?

This is the question on the table today as we discuss all our favorite virtual training tips.

Once the pandemic hit, it seems like it took forever to get our businesses online virtually. But once they did...holy Zoom Zombies Batman!

We were using a virtual meeting program for EVERYTHING. Meetings that should have been emails. Workshops that should have been bite-sized learning bits. Lectures that should have been audio recordings. Organizations (and L&D departments) took something fabulous and exhausted everyone. It's time to rethink our virtual programs and activities. So, I bring to you our first-ever, VIRTUAL ACTIVITIES EXTRAVAGANZA.

Today we were lucky enough to have Kassie Laborie (the Virtual Training Superhero) join us on our chat today, and she left us with several things to consider when leveling up your virtual training game.

Here are some further resources to support you in your efforts to bring leadership and remote teams together.

04 Oct 2021L&D‘s Role in Communicating Change00:57:24

Change. It’s hard. The word itself conjures up feelings of panic, frustration, and lots of deja vu. (How much change can one organization go through? SERIOUSLY?)

But going through organizational change is not a matter of "if" but "when".

Every organization must change over time – to adapt to its marketplace, to build on new ideas and technologies, and to adjust to changing circumstances. (COVID anyone?)

But one thing IS certain - many people are not comfortable with change.

Here the Coffee Chat community discusses what L&D's role is when communicating change.

08 Feb 2023Defining Instructional Design00:44:47

It all starts with the BIG question: What is Instructional Design and what does it mean in today's ever-changing workplace?

Several years ago, I wrote a blog post titled "Instructional Design Isn't Dead." I suppose now, I could write a post about how "Instructional design isn't dead. It just has a new name".

But as Shakespeare said, "A rose by another name is still a rose." And this holds true for instructional design.

Today’s chat took us through a journey of what the role of instructional design should be and the importance of keeping business goals as our North Star. It’s critical we have the ability to communicate our value in business terms.

22 Mar 2023Creative Ways to Debrief and Add Reflection to Learning00:52:27

#AllTheIdeas!

It all started with the question on the table: What are your creative solutions for debriefing and learning reflection?

Participants develop insight into their growth by reflecting on and recognizing the knowledge and skills shared in sessions or workshops. A well-moderated debrief session also makes learners aware of future learning requirements to lift current learning to a new level.

This chat offered some stellar ideas - but as usual, it all begins with the person in the front of the room. Are we setting aside our egos to allow for proper questioning and constructive challenges?

How are we creating a safe place to ask questions - no one wants to be seen as “the only one who doesn’t understand.” Therefore creating a space for anonymity, as Jason suggested, is a bright idea.

There will always be someone who doesn’t feel comfortable contributing and those who take over the conversations - the key is balancing both to allow everyone’s voice to be heard during the debriefing process.

It all started with the question: How does Learning and Development (L&D) handle learning myths? Not about how to bust them but how to address them when they appear in the wild. When a colleague or manager states a myth as truth - now what? How can we handle this with grace and patience? Without making others feel inferior or stupid?

As they discuss these main points:

Point #1: Understand that people don’t know what they don’t know. That goes for L&D professionals too.

Point #2: It’s tough to let go of sacred cows. We have to have conversations with grace, patience, and science!

Point #3: Experience can misinform. Just because we’ve done a thing, doesn’t mean we’ve done the thing correctly.

Point #4: Always start with data and research.

Point #5: Sometimes good design is the solution.

I’ll leave you with this thought:

Handling learning myths can be tricky and must be handled with care and sensitivity. Being condescending, patronizing, or just plain rude and mean doesn't get the results we need - it doesn't move the needle. What does move the needle is knowing our audience. Where are they in their career? Are they SMEs turned trainers? Are they new to the industry? Do they work alone and depend on tribal knowledge?

Remember the words from the great Stephen Covey, “Seek for to Understand”. This is the only way to affect change.

Stay curious & take over the world!

Shannon

24 May 2023LR Solo - Why We All Need Coaching and Mentoring00:12:36
It all started with a Coffee Chat.

We asked this question:

How can L&D maximize the value of working with a coach or mentor for their own professional growth and development, and what are some effective strategies for building a coaching or mentoring program that can be sustainable within an organization?

I felt this conversation was important enough to add some additional thoughts. As a refresher, here are some of the mentioned links.

15 Mar 2023Learning Rebels Live with Gloria Alvarez00:28:33

Going LIVE with Gloria Alvarez!

Serendipity hit when I connected with Gloria! Finding an LD person who did not only have visual design skills but was educated at the Art Institute of Houston…well that’s the universe talking. And I had to take advantage of it!

Why this, Why now?

The art of visual design is often treated as an afterthought with L&D. However, with tools such as Canva at our fingertips, there is no excuse for bad design. Bad visual design creates an unnecessary barrier to learning and many times drives people immediately to cognitive or sensory overload.

You can find Gloria on LinkedIn, where she also takes on graphic design work. So, if you simply don't have the time to create your own designs, look Gloria up!

Sit back and enjoy the ride.

How the Adult Brain Works. Neuroscience and Adult Learning

The discussion around neuroscience and learning is always interesting and this was no exception. Our special Learning Rebels guest, Stella Collins from Stellar Labs shared all kinds of knowledge bombs! There was so much to process and it was great everyone contributed their thoughts...this is how we all "Learn Something New"!

Key AHA Statements:

  • "Neuroscience is any of the Sciences that relates to brains behaviors and people. Neuroscience is the physical of - 'How does your brain connect'?"
  • "Neuroscience is not just one science. The science of learning is many different types of Sciences."
  • "Recognition is not as strong as recall"
  • "Get more blood to the brain through movement to strengthen learning ties"
  • "Be aware of people trying to sell you something, do your own research"
  • Avoid the "BASIC" approach to learning:
    • Boredom
    • Avoid Abstract
    • Stress
    • Information overload
    • Cognitive overload

30 Mar 2023Creating a Safe Haven for Learning00:46:57

It all started with the question on the table: How can we create a safe environment for people to shake off training baggage? Where they feel safe to contribute experiences and stories?

So many wonderful ideas to try!

This was clearly a topic that resonated with everyone. The chat was a high-traffic area!

This is what I love about our community. We are a group that shares gracefully and discusses ideas with the intention of learning from each other - a very real representation of creating a safe haven for discussions.

And in true Coffee Chat style, questions begat questions.

  • We discussed that most trainers have a ground rule around expecting everyone to speak up and participate, but what does that mean?
  • What about those who don’t feel comfortable?
  • Have we prepared alternative methods of participation that don’t put people in the limelight?
  • Then we moved from setting expectations for participants, to setting expectations for ourselves. How do we model behaviors we want to see? Are we accessible, visible, open?
  • Heather had a great point, about trying to do away with the negative stigma about asking questions = I'm not as smart/good.

I hope you enjoy the conversation!

08 Mar 2023Debunking Learning Myths00:52:01

Such an energetic conversation!

One of the things we discussed was the importance of having grace.

Remember, tribal knowledge can be a hard thing to fight. We all have biases that get in the way of learning something different or keeps us from course correcting.

Critical is the idea of doing your own research. Take information from someone you trust, and conduct some research with an unbiased eye.

THIS is how we beat back myths. By growing our own knowledge and providing guidance when necessary. We discussed "repeating the truth, not the myth." Which is PERFECT. Share the correct information.

When someone says, "let's be sure we touch on all the learning styles in our programs," we can simply say, "I think what you mean is create content that supports the exchange of knowledge," and leave it there. If the conversation persists, then you can too.

12 Jan 2023Shedding SMART Goals00:35:28

It all started with a question: Why do SMART goals fail to work?

SMART goals may be good for project management, such as when you are trying to achieve a very specific goal for a very specific outcome. However, they fail us when trying to create larger goals for our personal and professional growth and development.

We need to dig deeper.

Where's the stretch?

Where's the motivation?

Where's the flexibility?

Start with Big Hairy Audacious Goals

What are BHAG's?

BHAG (pronounced bee-hag) stands for Big Hairy Audacious Goals. The term was first coined in 1994 by Jim Collins and Jerry Porras in their book "Built to Last: Successful Habits of Visionary Companies."

The issue with SMART goals is that when written and followed explicitly, they are way too constrictive. When we fall outside the boundaries of the SMART goal, it all looks like failure. If you don't achieve the goal by the "date," does that mean you've failed? If you don't achieve the measurement, does that mean you've failed? That's a lot of failures to pile into one goal.

31 Aug 2023Rethink and Redesign: The Power of Creative Problem Solving00:18:02
It starts with a question: Why are we trying to tackle today’s problems with yesterday's thinking?

Don’t you want to create learning solutions that are more than just “tick a box?”

Don’t you want solutions that are tailored to fit the unique needs and aspirations of the people in your organization?

Sure you do, and collectively getting ideas from key people allows the best innovations to bubble to the top.

So why do we try to develop innovative solutions with traditional development practices?

Let’s face it - In the L&D industry, resistance to change and the adoption of Creative Problem Solving (CPS) techniques can often be traced back to a reliance on the “we’ve always done it that way” approach.

It’s time for a new approach - and I hope this episode inspires you to step out of the box and try new methods to gain more innovative ideas.

28 Jun 2023Unlocking Organizational Knowledge00:47:09
It all started with the BIG question on the table.

How can we keep up with the knowledge and gather the stories that are leaving the business every day?

There were a lot of ideas flowing in this chat. Everything from tools to processes. However, it all boils down to how we gather the knowledge and stories of people. People have a funny way of deciding how they want to tell and share their stories.

This means starting with the basics.

Seek first to understand!

As Douglas stated - where does the story start? Is there a pain point to connect with? People want to know that they, and by extension their stories, have value. How are we, as L&D people and representatives of the organization, representing ourselves?

Do the people feel they can trust us with their knowledge, that the stories will be told with the same passion shared?

Are we asking for stories and then doing nothing with them? I hope that you took away some ideas for how to gather information, the importance of continuous documentation, and how we can incentivize those who participate in the gathering process.

I hope one of you starts your own - Tradition, Trash or Try podcast! If you do, let me know.

14 Jun 2023Learning Rebels Solo - The Power of Conferences00:15:30
It’s all so exciting!

In this Learning Rebels Solo, I wanted to focus my energy on diving into the power of attending conferences for professional growth. Whether you're a seasoned professional or just starting your career, conferences can be a game-changer.

Whether you attend conferences virtually or IRL - Conferences offer a unique platform for L&D professionals to expand their knowledge, network with industry leaders, and gain exposure to new ideas and trends.

One of the primary benefits is not only the opportunity to learn from experts who share their insights, but to network and share stories from those who have been in the trenches with us. Not to mention that you can meet potential mentors and even future employers. The connections made at conferences can lead to new job opportunities, partnerships, and valuable industry connections.

And who doesn’t want that?

In this solocast, I shared 6 tips for you to act on, if you attended or are planning to attend an industry conference.

But IMO, the most important tip is to take action! Why go if you are going to sit on all the knowledge? Don’t be a knowledge hoarder!

04 May 2022Why Leadership Development Programs Fail00:50:01

How can Learning and Development drag leadership development programs into the 21st century? This is the question on the table today.  Global corporate training spending has been steadily increasing over the past several years, with the leadership development industry taking the lead on the percentage of spend with a total spend of $370.3 billion in 2019.  370 Billion. With a B.  What are we getting for that spend? Apparently not a lot as a McKinsey study tells us that majority of organizational leadership feel that leadership development programs aren’t adding value to the business. We all know from experience that culture will conquer strategy every day of the week. No leadership development program can truly succeed unless the organization is willing to look beyond these seven words: "that's the way we've always done things." It’s time to turn a rebellious eye to this topic.  Here are some further resources to support you in your efforts to bring leadership and remote teams together. 23 Mar 2022Secrets to Creating a Workplace Mentoring Program00:42:17

Creating a Workplace Mentoring Program

What does it take to sustain and nurture a workplace mentoring program and prepare for challenges that will come our way?

To create a program both potential mentors and mentees will benefit from, we need to put a twist on the creation process. Humans, being humans it's not simply a matter of placing person "A" with person "B". It's about building connections that matter.

And just as important, if a mentoring program is poorly handled there can be detrimental effects. Research from the Journal of Vocational Behavior has found that poor mentoring experiences can lead to lasting psychological effects. Yikes!

I encourage you to download the chat. There were MANY excellent tips and actionable advice anyone can use. PLus check out all the tools below.

01 Mar 2023Four Lessons I’ve Learned in My Career of Learning and Development00:13:37

Host: Shannon Tipton

In this solo podcast, I wanted to share with you the lessons I’ve learned in my 30 years in Learning and Development.

When I started, I knew less than nothing about adult and workplace learning from an educational perspective. My educational background was in Business, not people. And this was WAY before the advent of the Google machine.

What I did have in my possession was an old ATD handbook from the 1970s. Which, surprisingly, is still relevant today.

I read,

I took classes,

I researched,

I went to conferences.

I listened and learned from industry experts such as Pike, Rossett, Allen, Biech, Kirkpatrick, and Stolovitch. I got on mailing lists for ATD (then ASTD), ISPI, AMA -  just to name a few. As the years passed, there were things that I learned that held up and other things that didn’t - that’s life. Things change. Research is updated, and old processes reflect improvements.

Therefore, based on this - here are 4 things that I discovered were important on my path to building Learning Rebels.

Curiosity

There’s nothing that underpins my work more than having a curious mindset. It’s critical that curiosity not simply be the byproduct of serendipitous events. It should be time spent listening, watching and intentionally questioning what surrounds us.

Here are some resources to support your curious mindset

Experimenting

Alongside curiosity sits the importance of experimentation. If nothing else, my road with experiments taught me that experimenting isn’t about skill or tools, it’s about mindset.

Experiments can be a game changer for Learning and Development and an area where the greatest improvement is needed.

01 Jun 2023The Essential Transition of L&D into Business Partners00:51:19

It all started with a question: How can L&D become better business partners?

Let’s address the elephant in the room – in the business world today, Learning and Development (L&D) teams can’t just focus on creating cool learning programs. Our role within the workplace today goes way beyond that. Our role requires a skill that may not be familiar to many L&D professionals and could be a bit uncomfortable, being business partners.

Building business partnerships isn’t just a nice-to-have skill – it’s a must-have skill.

The conversation focused on these five points

  1. Act like a business partner
  2. Understand the connection between support and goals
  3. Speak business, not learning
  4. Practice the language of data
  5. Create ambassadors

By becoming better business partners, we can ensure efforts are aligned with business goals, address real organizational challenges, and ultimately, significantly impact the company’s bottom line.

And who doesn’t want that?

This Coffee Chat will help you to set yourself up for success, and here are the resources to support you.

12 Apr 2023Learning Rebels in 15: Creative Ways to Debrief and Add Reflection to Learning00:09:20

Your weekly double shot is “Creative Ways to Debrief and Add Reflection to Learning”

You can find the full live conversation here.

It all started with the question: What are your creative solutions for debriefing and reflection, and how can we incorporate these ideas into virtual and online learning experiences? Let's face it, if you want to make learning stick, proper debriefing and allowing for reflection is critical.

In this Learning Rebels in 15 we are hearing from:

Andrew J.

Maureen F.

Todd L

Dr. Lori

Ericca B

Evelien R

Micheal B

As they discuss these main points:

Point #1: Ensure debrief and reflection always tie back to application

Point #2: Know your audience. Andrew shared that to get greater engagement the data points to having women speak first.

Point #3: Use different techniques to inspire thought

Point #4: Activate the managers!

Point #5: Run from the “conspiracy of convenience” don’t just tick the box. Be purposeful.

I’ll leave you with this thought:

Debriefing and reflection take on many forms. But we do know that without it, learning will fail. We spend a lot time and money trying to get the content “just right” - don’t waste your efforts by not creating a reflection and debriefing strategy.

Stay curious & take over the world!

20 Apr 2022Creating Learning Games, the How’s and Why’s Behind Gamification00:53:15

Can you use gamification to connect a remote workforce, build learning engagement and improve new hire productivity? Can game mechanics really help us with the learning process?

Unequivocally, yes. And this is the question on the table in today's Learning Rebels Coffee Chat.

But first, let’s get a grasp on the difference between gamification and game-based learning. Gamification is the use of game elements in any context that is non-game-related. Using the game mechanics without an actual game. For example, the use of avatars, incorporating challenges, badges, or incorporating a leaderboard (see your score against your friends – I killed more zombies than you did!)

Game-based learning is the development of an actual game. Having an active learning experience within a game framework, which has specific learning objectives and measurable outcomes. The game is the learning. Imagine “diner dash: restaurant” as a requirement for all food servers.

Turns out the most important thing to have when creating learning games, is a bit of imagination and creativity.

10 Aug 2022Exercises for Boosting Creativity00:41:08

How can we encourage our own creative spirit?

It all started with the question on the table - what will it take to move out of the limiting belief, that we "cannot or are not creative"?

Two takeaways:

From Heather – control our inner dialog and simply take it out of our vocabulary. This is an approach that can seriously help us all grow in all areas of life as the voices inside our heads have the ability to drive our actions. If we keep telling ourselves we aren't creative, then it must be true.

From Kely - "The creative process is full of failure" Creativity is a continuum. Sometimes we’re rich with ideas, and sometimes not so much. Don’t put undo pressure on yourself.

"I don't want to share because it's ugly" "What if I write and no one reads it?"  But if you're happy with your creation, isn't that all that matters?

28 Sep 2023Connecting Curation to Business00:49:32
It all started with the BIG question on the table.

What strategies does L&D need to consider to align curated content with business goals?

We’ve all seen the term “curation” used to describe the act of making generic content available either generally within the space of a social enterprise network such as Teams or Slack, or on a learning management platform.

However, without considering how the curated content impacts the people and the business, we’re doing the same thing we’ve always done – haphazardly throwing content to the wind with low engagement and, therefore, adding no real value to the business.

If we’re going to prove L&D value through curation efforts, then we can’t just keep doing the same thing only with a different name. We have to do more.

So, it was timely that Mike Taylors CURATED model burst unto to scene. We were able to incorporate his model into our discussion about connecting curation to business.

There was a lot to talk about and I hope you are able to take away key ideas to implement today.

Stay Curious!

21 Sep 2022Providing Business Value, the Key to L&D Success00:56:03

For Laura Overton, it all started with a question: When you talk about the value L&D is providing to your organization, what narrative of success do you use?

Laura’s research found that L&D professionals focusing on business value were better positioned to harness learning innovation to deliver business results. Click here to view the Learning Value Spectrum chart.

On one end we have Learning Value: "Our connection with and activity around our programs: hours, engagement, and efficiency." On the other end, we have Business Value: "Where our #1 focus is on the outputs that are important to our organization."

At a time when L&D has the opportunity to connect with business leaders with the skills agenda being one of the highest priority needs for business today, who can leaders depend on?

Hopefully us.

19 Oct 2023Curation Tools and Techniques00:28:55
It all started with the BIG question on the table.

What are the different tools impacting the curation process, and what challenges do we need to overcome to ensure relevance and impact?

Curation seems to be the L&D buzzword at the moment and while curation seems to be on everyone’s agenda - there’s a lot of anxiety over how to get started.

Here's the Good News: advancements in technology have provided L&D professionals with an army of tools and platforms designed to streamline content curation.

The bad news? These advances lead us to an army of tools.  The sheer volume of available resources can be overwhelming, making it difficult to decide which tools are effective and will help us meet our curation goals.

During our last Coffee Chat, we discussed how to align our curation efforts with the needs and goals of the business. This week, we're discussing the different tools and techniques we can use.

Plus – Special Bonus! Mike Taylor joins us to share his views on the different tools he uses.

Working Successfully with Subject Matter Experts

How can we better manage our relationships with SMEs so it’s less about who’s right, but what’s best for the people and the business?

This is the big question on the table with today’s Learning Rebels Coffee Chat.

Regardless of your role in Learning and Development, all have had moments working with a Subject Matter Expert where things go off the rails. Sometimes it's because of a power struggle between us and them - but many times it's because of a lack of communication and empathy for each other.

There were so many excellent tips and ideas. Some are fresh ideas and others are best practices reimagined. All very clever!

29 Aug 2024Focus and Flow: Tips and Tricks for Productivity00:43:20

It all started with the big question on the table:

Are we caught up in "Productivity Shiny Object Syndrome?"

Do you ever feel like you’re juggling flaming chainsaws while blindfolded on a unicycle?

You’re not alone.

Between designing workshops, crafting engaging training materials and nurturing employee development, finding time to breathe, let alone be productive, feels like a pipe dream.

Today, let’s explore what really matters when choosing productivity tools. Together we can shift our mindset away from the “more tools, more productivity” myth and help identify the specific areas slowing us down in our unique workflow. Then, we can consider what tools and processes can make our work lives healthier and more efficient.

This podcast calls back to this Learning Rebels Blog Post: Here’s What Really Matters with Productivity Tools. https://www.learningrebels.com/2024/02/01/heres-what-really-matters-in-productivity-tools/

21 Jun 2023Bridging the Business Communication Gap00:48:18
It all started with the BIG question on the table.

What strategies can L&D professionals employ to enhance cross-departmental communication and put us on a more even playing field with the business?

This was a hot conversation - I think we all had some latent feelings about how we want and need to communicate with the business.

I'll repeat this in case you missed it. Many times we focus on having a "seat at the table," which is great, but we're focused on the wrong table. We're focused on the leadership table when we should be focused on being accepted at the lunch table with the middle managers and team supervisors.

This means shifting the way we communicate. We used the phrase "wimpy language" and while that may seem harsh - it can be true. The language we use to communicate can either make us equals to those at the table or make us "less than." Which would you rather be?

I love that in the chat, everyone started reframing the "wimpy language" we use as L&D professionals. Words like collaboration, cooperation, and teambuilding, can trigger some serious PTSD for managers who have been part of well-meaning initiatives only to be a waste of time.

This means that we need to reframe conversations. I hope you found some great examples in the conversation. Be sure to check out the “Verbal Toolkit” mentioned by David.

06 Apr 2022Working Together, While Apart. Supporting a Hybrid Culture.00:50:55

How can L&D help leadership build a remote-first mindset? Helping their teams work together while apart?

The hybrid work model is here to stay and leaders will face the continuing challenge of managing these teams. The L&D role of being connectors and advocates of people has never been more important.

It's not always easy to manage and develop hybrid teams. For some managers, this requires a different mindset and a paradigm shift when considering what the workplace looks like in 2022. So how can we help prepare and support managers as the workplace shifts to this hybrid model?

In this chat, many tips were shared on how L&D can support leaders on this journey. Be sure to download the chat messages and gain access to our “Chat blast” of ideas at the end of the conversation.

Here are some further resources to support you in your efforts to bring leadership and remote teams together.

16 Nov 2023The Future of Instructional Design00:24:19
It all started with the BIG question on the table.

What skills will L&D need in order to remain relevant in the business world of the future?

L&D is undergoing a seismic shift. With the advent of new technologies and changing workplace dynamics, we are facing challenges that are far more complex than ever before.

And then there was the wake-up call.

In December 2021, ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, dissolved its entire L&D department. The reason? They felt that many of their learning initiatives were not adding value and were merely "feel-good activities" with limited impact.

Sure, there is more going on than meets the eye - but we can't deny that layoffs in L&D are on the rise. So what to do?

We can prepare for the future because the future is now. Today, we are going to be discussing the skills that instructional designers, and L&D in general, will need in order to prepare and be successful for the future.

24 Feb 2025Curiosity Engagement00:42:36
It all started with the BIG question on the table. How do we spark and sustain curiosity in learning?   This Coffee Chat dove into how our curiosity fuels engagement. We kicked things off by brainstorming ways to design learning experiences that get people questioning, exploring, and leaning in for more. Whether through interactive quizzes, thought-provoking scenarios, or unexpected challenges, the goal is to keep learners thinking, What’s next?   We want to build structured designs that keep learners engaged and prevent that dreaded click-through-and-forget syndrome. From branching scenarios to drip-feeding content, the right approach can make learning feel more like an adventure than a checklist.   Keeping curiosity alive takes some intention. Real-world examples, case studies, and unexpected challenges help hold attention, while showing immediate benefits keeps motivation high. The goal goes beyond sparking curiosity and into making learning feel like something worth coming back to.   Curiosity fuels engagement, but it also builds lifelong learners. 03 Feb 2025Setting Big Hairy Audacious Goals in 202500:48:21

It all started with the BIG question on the table.

How can we set goals that truly align with our personal and professional aspirations while making the process motivating, realistic, and actionable?

This Coffee Chat was all about rethinking how we approach goal setting. Forget the old SMART goals you’ve heard about a thousand times—this conversation was focused on making goals meaningful, personal, and, most importantly, doable.

We talked about the problem with framing goals in a negative light. How often do we say, “I need to stop doing this” or “I should do that”? We instead tried to ask “What’s the positive motivation behind my goal?”

We also had some fun with numbers! By calculating the weekends left in our lives (yes, weekends), we got a new perspective on time and how to prioritize what matters most. It’s not about how many years you have left, but about how you’re using the time you’ve got.

This chat was full of “aha” moments and practical ideas, but what stuck with me most was this: Goal setting isn’t just about planning. It’s about believing in the process, breaking things down, and being kind to yourself along the way.

So, what are your big, hairy, audacious goals? What’s stopping you? Let’s keep the conversation going!

Stay Curious!

22 Feb 2023Building a Habit of Continuous Learning00:38:46

So many great ideas were shared in this episode that I wouldn’t blame you if you didn’t know where to start - so here are some ideas for you.

  1. Sometimes we just need to step away. Shake off the work vibes and shift your location or mindset. Create triggers that tell your mind you're ready to learn!
  2. Don't just make a date with learning on your calendar. Create a to-do list item! Nothing feels better than marking something off the to-do list. 😍
  3. Take advantage of the down moments. What can you read in line at the store? What can you listen to while making dinner?
  4. Focus on small steps. Break down the big topics. Don't try to learn all about Data Analytics in one bite. Pick one article, one video, to tackle.
  5. Lean on your community to help you. More on that coming soon!

I love how our group is so generous with their knowledge and support!

26 Jul 2023LR Solo - My Experience with Imposter Syndrome00:13:44
It all started with a conversation: Where can they buy my book?

“I haven’t written a book.”

“Really? I thought you had.”

“Nope.”

“Why not?”

Cue: Awkward silence.

Truth is, I’ve been asked to write a book several times. But I just can’t get out of my own head to do so. About this time, I saw an HBR article about Imposter Syndrome. The universe calls.

So I hope this episode helps you to see that if you have these feelings, you are not alone. Take the negative inner dialog and leave it like day-old sushi at a gas station!

11 Jan 2024When Training isn’t Successful: Bridging the Learning/Doing Gap00:46:11
It all started with the BIG question on the table.

How can we ensure that the skills and knowledge acquired during training are effectively applied in the workplace?

We've all been there - we create what we feel is a learning solution that can't go wrong...then it does.

Most of us have been there, done that, bought the tee-shirt and don't want to go back.

We know that training fails for two reasons

  1. Lack of feedback mechanism and
  2. Lack of learning reinforcement

But there is a third, more realistic reason—lack of management involvement. Activating managers early and often is the key to success when bridging the learning/doing gap. The managers are the gatekeepers and it was clear in our discussion that we've been manager-blocked many times.

Today we're going to be discussing the common pitfalls learning within organizations encounters, how we can provide ongoing learning support - without workplace disruption, and what tools we can use to help embed learning solutions into the organization?

19 Oct 2022The Secret Sauce Behind Successful Sales Training00:46:23

It all starts with a question: How can we make training more effective for sales teams?

According to the Marketing Research Organization, ES Research, “between 85% and 90% of sales training has no lasting impact after 120 days. At the same time, companies are spending billions of dollars on sales training each year. That’s billions of dollars wasted on training that disappoints and only produces short-term boosts in sales”.

There’s nothing Sales Leaders hate more than wasted time and wasted money. So how can we move the needle on Sales Enablement?

It all starts with the mentality of “No fluff, no extra stuff!”

From there we must get creative to build energy, and be smart so that we aren’t creating disruption and frustration.

19 Mar 2025Building a Habit of Learning00:46:17
It all started with the BIG question on the table. How do we actually build a habit of learning—for ourselves? We're taking a step back from helping everyone else learn and focusing on a challenge we all share: making time for our own growth. We all want to learn more, but between meetings, deadlines, and life in general, it’s easy to let personal learning fall to the bottom of the list.   Many of us have tried blocking time on our calendars—only to watch it disappear when something "more urgent" comes up. Others have tried to tie learning to an active project, making it easier to justify. And then there are those who squeeze in reading, reflection, or microlearning into everyday moments whenever possible (because let’s be real, some of that doomscrolling could probably be put to better use).   So how do we make learning a real habit instead of an afterthought? We set time aside, try and understand what methods work best for us, and meet learning where it fits into our lives. Whether it’s scheduling dedicated learning time, stacking habits onto existing routines, or finding ways to reflect and apply new ideas, the key is making it stick.   At the end of the day, learning isn’t just something we should do—it’s something we deserve to do. So what small step can you take to build your learning habit today? 31 Aug 2022Learning from Failure00:33:41

How can we best treat failure as a positive aspect of life, rather a negative?

This was the question on the table as we discussed learning from failure.

This was an interesting chat – there were many directions to take, as people process failure in a variety of different ways. Some people go internal, and dig deep into themselves to consider what may have gone wrong that they can control, while others process failure as a data collection exercise.

Where do you fall on the continuum?

Two takeaways:

From Dickson – Sometimes we turn the “why not’ question into a way to find out “why NOT”. However, Dickson tells us that the adventure begins with why not. Sometimes “why not” is scary, and can most certainly be intimidating – but is take was treating “Why Not” as the beginning of a journey, and when doing so, you find some of the most remarkable things. So put your fear of failure to the side and treat it as an exercise in “why not”.

From JD - "Be Kind to Yourself" Being self-aware that failure happens – EMBRACE the SUCK! Time tempers failure, be kind and realize that things happen. Surround yourself with positive people and environments. Failure is not the end-all be-all it’s part of the continuum of live. Stop putting pressure from yourself.

Let’s remember that failure is only bad if we treat it as something bad. Reframing how we think about failure will take our mental health to a place that is more managable. It’s not necessarily failure, but simply making a mistake and moving on.

Stay Curious! Shannon

29 Jun 2022Skills Gap Analysis for the Future of Work00:44:12

What it will take to conduct a skill gap analysis in this new generation of work?

This is the question on the table today with the Learning Rebels Coffee Chat.

Typically, when considering conducting a skills gap analysis, this means identifying the needed skills to make our organizations successful. To make people smarter, better, faster than they were the day before.

But what does this look like now? Will the same tools work? How will we present findings to leadership? Let’s gather and discuss what it will take to conduct a skill gap analysis in this new generation of work.

It was interesting having this conversation with everyone. I think the realization was that we all approach a gap analysis from different angles, but it's clear that in this fast-paced work environment, it's something that needs to happen.

Here are some resources to help with the journey:

18 Jan 2022Learn Something New Wednesday with Richard Fleming: Writing Powerful Stories (even if you think you can’t)00:46:02

LSN Wednesday Storytelling – Shownotes

How to create stories that hook people emotionally and earn learner attention and engage their emotions so that training turns into action?

As L&D people we tell stories all the time, to explain to a participant how he might improve, or to inspire a reflection exercise, or to connect learning to life lessons. Storytelling is an essential skill, but what makes a compelling story in a business context? And how can you improve your ability to tell stories that persuade and teach? During this Learn Something New Wednesday, Sage Media discusses how to:

  • Avoid the pitfalls that commonly arise when crafting stories for learning, how to overcome the risks, and ultimately create your "happily-ever-after".
  • Develop your own powerful stories.
  • How to begin building and strengthening your creative storytelling talents.

10 Feb 2022Motivating and Engaging Self-Directed Learners00:45:36

When priorities compete, how can we best support those who really want to enhance their skills and take ownership of their professional development?

This is the big question on the table during this Learning Rebels Coffee Chat.

Committed self-directed learners are hard to find and are becoming harder to motivate. What if organizations could teach their employees to be self-directed learners? How can organizations encourage and support continuous and collaborative learning? How can we:

  1. Help them discover the need.
  2. Help them to reinforce results.
  3. Help them connect learning to their values.
  4. Give them more control.
  5. Answer the "so-what" question.
  6. Challenge the brain more.

Download this list to judge if you are headed in the right direction. Originally created for academia, the concepts hold water in the corporate world.

16 Aug 2023Unleashing Creative Potential00:34:40
It all started with the BIG question on the table.

How can we tap into our inner business creativity more often?

When it comes to creativity, as L&D professionals, we often think about being creative in a meeting or a classroom, but how can we encourage creativity as a culture?

First, it means being aware of what is happening outside our own box, building relationships across departments, and providing the building blocks for creating a safe place to share creative ideas.

Second, it means in order for us to bring our creative best (as well as develop the creative best in others), we have to build connections first. Even the first spark of commonality creates a tentative bond where we are a little less afraid to share ideas.

So I hope this conversation sparked some ideas to help you connect and strengthen your creative tendencies.

17 May 2023Coaching and Mentoring Yourself and Others00:41:44
It all started with the BIG question on the table.

How can L&D maximize the value of working with a coach or mentor for their own professional growth and development, and what are some effective strategies for building a coaching or mentoring program that can be sustainable within an organization?

This was an interesting conversation. When considering coaching and mentoring programs, we take many things for granted - we assume people know where to go and what to do.

  1. Do we know the difference between coaching and mentoring?
  2. What baggage can a potential mentee may bring to formal mentoring situations, and are mentors trained for that?
  3. What about reverse mentoring in the workplace?
  4. How good are WE at creating connections that may be potential mentors or coaches?

There was a lot to consider and absorb. One particular point of discussion was remembering that many people are assigned “coaching” as a punitive action. They’ve done something wrong, now they must be “coached”. Honestly, a perspective I had overlooked.

I hope you find other A-HA moments too!

05 Oct 2022Sticky Learning: Creating Sustainable Learning After the Fact00:52:40

Sticky Learning: Creating Sustainable Learning After the Fact

It starts with a question: What can we do to help learning stick?

We know that people are working at speeds not seen prior to the COVID19 pandemic. The way business operates has changed, therefore the way we work within businesses has changed. Ultimately this means in order to help learning gain traction means changing how we view developing and implementing training to include reinforcement learning after the fact.

But where do we start? Fortunately, the community had A LOT of thoughts.

Going LIVE - Sharing the Story of the Storyteller, Hadiya Nuriddin

We all have something in our backgrounds that silently informs how we act and what we do, and Hadiya is no different.

Hadiya’s journey

It seems logical that Hadiya would want to grow up and be on the stage. Her skill for weaving a story is legendary. What wasn’t logical was how she grew away from acting and into customer support training for Kinko’s!

With her Master’s Degree in Writing, she single-handedly took over training support. Writing job aids and other learning materials to help the poor customers who were struggling with that new-fangled technology of a floppy disk.

Her story is inspirational. Who knew that little girl who was looking for her Oscar would grow up to write a book on Storytelling with another on the way for Quality Assurance? Yes, Quality Assurance! You’ll have to listen in to get the rest of the story!

20 Apr 2023Learning from Others, Building a Collaborative Learning Culture00:53:25

How meta was this episode? People collaborating about collaboration.

So many great ideas were shared in this episode. In particular, it was an ah-ha moment for me to attribute the “Fight, Flight or Freeze” reflex into a learning situation. And it’s true! If people are scared, worried, or fearful, solid collaboration simply won’t occur.

There was also mention of recognizing the difference between cooperative and collaborative learning.

Cooperative learning involves a group of individuals working together to achieve a common goal or complete a task. In contrast, collaborative learning focuses on group members sharing knowledge, skills, and resources to achieve a shared outcome.

Cooperative learning is more structured and goal-oriented, whereas collaborative learning is more flexible and emphasizes peer-to-peer interaction.

While it is a nuanced difference, it’s important to recognize how to use one versus the other.

There was also a lot of discussion about “words.” How are we communicating collaboration? Are we being encouraging and thoughtful? It would be easy to trigger someone who suffers from imposter syndrome or might have an inferiority complex.

Some key positive phrases:

  1. "Your input is valuable to our team's success."
  2. "I appreciate your willingness to collaborate."
  3. "Let's pool our resources and come up with a solution together."
  4. "I think we could benefit from everyone's unique perspectives."
  5. "We can build on each other's strengths and make something great."
  6. "I'm excited to see what we can create as a team."

This thoughtful conversation was a great follow-up to our “Creating a Safe Haven” chat. I encourage you to listen and compare notes.

15 Jun 2022Creating Leadership Programs with Impact00:53:57

How can we focus more on developing people than developing programs?

This is the question on the table today as we discuss leadership development with Andrew Jacobs, Host of Women Talking about Learning Podcast.

There were many things that covered in this week's coffee chat but the heart of the matter is knowing that if we aren’t prepared to address the cultural issues that are embedded within organizations, then ANY leadership development program will fail. So now what? How can we rethink Leadership.

In the linked images, Andrew shares his framework for moving forward – the focus being on people, rather than programs. We can have the BEST leadership development programs, but if they do not address capability and the organization isn’t prepared to support capacity...then it’s an uphill battle.

The conversation around the 5 Factors Creating Performance Change was quite interesting and thought provoking.

Start with

  • Knowing the aims of the program
  • Preparing to support relationships and structure
  • Have in place processes and systems to support development
  • Address behaviors and skills
  • Wrap it up and have it underpinned with a cultural blanket

There was so much more and I hope you have your pen and paper ready to take some serious notes!

As Kevin admits, sometimes the work gets boring. But, this doesn't mean we have to throw in the towel - it's about the ongoing process of discovery. What can we find to ignite our passions?

He didn't seek to become the L&D detective, it found him through exploration and curiosity. I hope you found his journey motivating and inspiring!

15 Aug 2024Finding Your Fire: Self-Motivation Techniques00:33:05

It all started with the big question on the table:

Are you feeling caught in the endless cycle of work, struggling to keep your motivation alive?

You’re not alone.

As we continue to wear numerous hats, maintaining a high level of self-motivation becomes difficult. Business is moving fast, and the expectation is that we should move even faster. We are caught up in the hamster wheel, and it is hard to keep ourselves motivated.

Are you tired, frustrated, maybe feeling a bit... crispy around the edges? Has it gotten to the point where every time you see an email notification, you break out in hives and daydream throwing your laptop out the window? Is your main accomplishment for the day discovering how many snacks you can consume in an hour? I see me, and I see you.

18 Aug 2022Learning Rebels in 15: Creating Leadership Programs with Impact00:09:09

Your weekly double shot is “Leadership Development: People not Classes”

Our first Learning Rebels in 15 is out of the bag!

Why not start this series with a topic that got EVERYONE riled up? “Why Leadership Development Programs Fail.” There was a lot of discussion around this topic and I think we captured it's essence here.

You can find the entire conversation here

In short, a lot of money is being spent on leadership development programs. In fact, a McKinsey report tells us that U.S. companies alone spend almost $14 billion annually on leadership development. However, we find that these programs fail with increasing speed and regularity.

What’s behind this failure, and how can we make improvements that can really impact the “way we’ve always done it”?

In this Learning Rebels in 15 - Coffee chat participants David K., Andrea J., Joe M., Andrew J., and Angie E. from the original episode discuss three main points:

Point #1: Fail - We treat Leadership development as one-size-fits-all programs. As we all know, training programs built for everyone usually benefit no one.

Point #2: Fail - Programs are treated as theatre.

Point #3: Crazy thought - moving leadership from classes to cohort.

To keep this short, I’ll leave you with this thought:

It’s not the programs or processes that make organizations successful - it’s the people. So let’s take the theatre out of leadership development and focus on building successful leaders rather than mediocre leadership programs.

Stay curious & take over the world!

Shannon

17 Nov 2021Ensuring Learning Stickiness00:44:56

Ensuring Sticky Learning

How can L&D better adjust for "after training" learning reinforcement? How can we level up ongoing learning support?

This is the big question on the table with today’s Learning Rebels Coffee Chat.

Organizational training budgets topped 82.5 BILLION. Billion, with a “B”. So why isn't training getting the job done? A recent Harvard Business Review Report points out that only 12% of learners say they apply the skills from the training they receive to their job. This the issue we are tackling today.

There were so many excellent tips and ideas. Some are fresh ideas and others are best practices reimagined. All very clever! 05 Feb 2025Shared Resources00:37:42
It all started with the BIG question on the table.   How can we leverage shared resources to better support our learning goals and professional growth?   This Coffee Chat was all about the power of collective knowledge. We kicked things off by reflecting on the big, audacious goals set in the last session. Some made progress, others hit roadblocks, but the common thread was the need for the right tools and accountability to keep moving forward.   From books and podcasts to digital organization tools, everyone had something valuable to contribute. Popular solutions like Pocket, Notion, and Raindrop emerged as favorites, with participants weighing in on their usability and learning curves.   We also explored must-read books like Aligning Instructional Design with Business Goals and ATD’s Organizational Development Handbook. The group discussed writing for social media, balancing engagement with authenticity, and how AI-powered tools can assist with content creation and organization.   No Learning Rebels chat is complete without a deep dive into learning technology, from hidden gems like Amazon Polly for text-to-speech to essential resources like Articulate’s eLearning Heroes.   In the final stretch, the conversation shifted toward continuous learning. How do we build habits that help us apply what we learn?   These are the questions we’ll tackle in future Coffee Chats, ensuring that we’re not just gathering resources—we’re using them to grow.   Stay curious! -Shannon

26 Oct 2023The Future of Instructional Design00:31:24
It all started with the BIG question on the table.

What is the future of instructional design and what skills will we need to remain relevant?

L&D is undergoing a seismic shift. With the advent of new technologies and changing workplace dynamics, we are facing challenges that are far more complex than ever before.

And then there was the wake-up call.

In December 2021, ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, dissolved its entire L&D department. The reason? They felt that many of their learning initiatives were not adding value and were merely "feel-good activities" with limited impact.

Sure, there is more going on than meets the eye - but we can't deny that layoffs in L&D are on the rise. So, what to do?

We can prepare for the future because the future is now. Today, we are going to be discussing the skills that instructional designers, and L&D in general, will have to have in order to prepare and be successful for the future.

Stay Curious!
