Before launching the DaVinci Institute, Tom spent 15 years at IBM as an engineer and designer where he received over 270 awards, more than any other IBM engineer. He is also a past member of the Triple Nine Society (High I.Q. society over 99.9 percentile).

Pepyn is a highly experienced and knowledgeable CEO with a 30-year track record of leading companies to create and deliver financial value to shareholders in challenging, transformational and disruptive situations.
A global CEO & executive, chairman of the board and PE expert, with a track record for fast and solid financial results in transformations of B2B companies with industrial manufacturing.
His passion for this type of work started while working at McKinsey in the late 1980s. Pepyn has worked in a range of business-to-business industries, typically within the manufacturing sector.
Disaster, disruption and change are recurring challenges in business.
We are used to reading about the successful disruptors of established industries (Tesla, Amazon, Netflix, Uber, etc.), but what about the companies they disrupted?
What ever happened to them?
How did they cope?
And more importantly, what are the secrets of making a business thrive again?
"Business Leadership Under Fire: Nine Steps to Rescue and Transform Organizations" is the book every business leader needs. It will inspire readers with its thoughtful, practical and battle-hardened recipes for success.
Pepyn Dinandt usually gets parachuted into an organization only after it realizes it is in real trouble. It is his job to assess and understand the situation that faces the business while also devising effective ways forward towards recovery and success.
In "Business Leadership Under Fire" Dinandt draws on his own extensive business experience and, with the help of decorated army officer Colonel Richard Westley, marries this proven expertise with the leadership insights of military thinkers to develop an imaginative and practical nine-step plan for any leader who wishes not simply to survive but to inspire and thrive "under fire".
Using lessons forged on the front lines of both the military and commercial worlds, Dinandt and Westley’s concise book is required reading for anyone in any organization that needs help in turbulent times.

Simon Townsley is an acclaimed international photojournalist and twice recipient of the British Press Photographer of the Year Award. Simon is known for his ability to connect with people and convey their story with dignity, even in extreme contexts.
“Trust is an essential value in being able capture a powerful image, but trust isn’t just between subject and photographer. It criss-crosses all threads, from NGO, publisher and authorities to photographer and subject. It is a privilege to be able to bear witness, and it is one I seek to honour. By creating compelling images of distressing situations I can break down the barriers that stop people engaging, to open their eyes without fear and broaden their perspective. – Simon Townsley
Arriving in London in 1987 from New Zealand, he was appointed Senior Photographer at the Sunday Times where he remained for 14 years. He covered conflicts around the world, including the Balkans, West Africa, the Middle East and Asia. He was assigned to photograph in depth numerous major news events such as Tiananmen Square, the Gulf war, fall of the Berlin Wall, siege of Sarajevo and the election of Nelson Mandela.
In 2002 he felt a need to explore photography in a deeper sense, to understand photography in its purest aesthetic, Using the power of the image to convey a message through its beauty alone. He embarked on a personal project- OILMAN.
Industrial landscapes from over 20 countries explore mankind’s relationship with the natural world in the desperate and dramatic pursuit of oil across the planet. Using his love of the simple aesthetic, the images were shot in large-format and displayed as grand-scale prints, exploring the sense of scale that the oil and gas industry operate on and the issues it creates.
For the last four years Simon has been working with the Telegraph Media Group Global Health Security Team. With support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Global Health Security project seeks to bring awareness of vitally important issues to wider audience and focuses on key pillars of health and security around the world.

The authors’ unique perspective transforms traditional practices, like employee coaching and collaboration, into dynamic self-actualizing workplaces. How? By sharing how caring leaders adroitly blend visible and subtle practices to realize the aspirational benefits of coaching and collaboration. The authors use a similar approach to share insights about less frequently discussed leadership issues such as how to build an empowering network of relationships and transform pushback into progress. The rather amazing David Pendleton and myself have a conversation about the NHS, this is something that is dear to David's heart and he really has a deep understanding of the topic. This is David's article on Linked In, on the topic: Click here.
It is no secret that the National Health Service, or NHS, is facing numerous challenges in recent times.
One major issue is the shortage of funding and resources. The NHS has been struggling to keep up with increasing demand for services, rising costs of medical supplies and treatments, and an aging population. This has led to overcrowded hospitals, longer waiting times for appointments and procedures, and a decrease in the quality of care.
Another challenge is the shortage of healthcare professionals, particularly doctors and nurses. The high levels of stress, long hours, and low pay have led to burnout and a decrease in morale among healthcare workers. This, in turn, is leading to high levels of staff turnover, which further exacerbates the problem.
Furthermore, the NHS is also facing a significant backlog of patients waiting for treatments, surgeries, and appointments. This is due in part to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has put an immense strain on the healthcare system. The pandemic has also highlighted the need for a more integrated and coordinated approach to healthcare, both within the NHS and with other health and social care providers.
In addition, the NHS is facing major issues with regards to technology and data management. The lack of a comprehensive, integrated IT system is leading to duplication of efforts, increased costs, and a decreased ability to deliver effective, efficient care.
In conclusion, the NHS is facing a multitude of challenges, including funding and resource constraints, shortage of healthcare professionals, backlogs in patient care, and inadequate technology and data management. Addressing these challenges will require a concerted effort from all stakeholders, including government, healthcare providers, and the public.
In the conversations that David and I have we discuss many things and as such decided to capture them.
They won't all have conclusions, however, we hope they add value.

Founded by Ollie Ollerton, former UK Special Forces in 2015, BreakPoint offers courses to organisations and individuals. They're designed to change the way you think, enabling positive change, unearthing potential and invigorating mental wellbeing.
Ollie Ollerton has lived an incredible life.
Survivor of a freak accident aged 10, tours of Northern Ireland and Iraq under his belt before the age of 21 as a Royal Marine, and a Special Forces soldier with the SBS by the age of 23.
When Ollie left the military, his life spiralled out of control. Struggling to define his purpose, he headed back to the only environment he felt comfortable in: a war zone. In the wild west of Iraq during the fall of Saddam Hussein, his inner noise fell silent amid the outer noise of conflict. But life as a mercenary took its toll. Alcohol offered a ready form of escapism.
Ollie tried to get himself back on track with a ‘normal’ life in Australia, but it just wasn’t possible. Before long, the call of danger beckoned and he was out in Thailand working with an elite team to rescue children from child slavery and sex trafficking. This experience was a pivotal moment in Ollie’s life. It helped him define his future purpose – helping others – which would become the very heartbeat of BreakPoint.
We talk about:
Being attacked by a chimp
The special forces
Break Point
The path to targetted thinking
Instagram being fake perfection
Thank god for failure
You have to stretch to grow
Being honest about where you are

Welcome to this week's episode of Leadership Bites, where we discuss the latest developments in the world of technology. In this episode, we will be exploring the big tech layoffs of 2023, which have already seen over 100,000 workers being laid off in just the first six weeks of the year.
According to data compiled by Layoffs.fyi, an online tracker that keeps tabs on job losses in the technology sector, the number of layoffs in 2023 already accounts for 64% of the total tech company layoffs for all of 2022. This is a significant trend that highlights the current state of the tech industry.
Some of the largest tech companies, including Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, Twitter, Microsoft, and Salesforce, have all laid off a significant number of employees. Alphabet, for example, has laid off 12,000 workers, while Amazon has laid off 18,000 employees. Meta has also been forced to let go of 11,000 workers, while Twitter has cut 4,000 jobs. Microsoft and Salesforce have both laid off 10,000 and 8,000 employees, respectively.
These job losses have come as a result of the end of the pandemic hiring spree, which saw many companies rapidly expanding their workforces to meet increased demand for technology services. Now that the pandemic has subsided, many of these same companies are having to restructure their operations to remain competitive, leading to significant layoffs across the industry.
Join us in this episode as we delve deeper into the reasons behind these layoffs, the impact they are having on the industry, and what the future of tech employment looks like in the wake of these developments.

Ten years ago, Paul Hutchinson was living a life that most people only dream of. As a successful multi-billion dollar fund manager, he had everything that money could buy. But everything changed when he was introduced to the horrific world of child trafficking.
Human trafficking is the second-largest criminal enterprise globally, and it is estimated that over 40 million people are trapped in modern-day slavery. It is a crime that knows no boundaries and affects people from all walks of life. But for Hutchinson, it became personal when he was recruited for his first undercover rescue mission in Colombia, one of Latin America's largest economies.
During that mission, Hutchinson played a part in rescuing over 120 children from the clutches of traffickers. The experience was life-changing for him, and it made him realize that he had to do something to help these innocent victims. Seeing a scared 11-year-old girl with tear-stained cheeks standing in front of him was a turning point for him. He knew that he had to dedicate his life to the eradication of human trafficking and rescuing as many children as he could.
Since that first mission, Hutchinson has taken part in over 70 undercover operations, working with government agencies posing as a wealthy paedophile in order to infiltrate gangs. His efforts have helped rescue countless children from the clutches of traffickers, and his work has been an inspiration to many.
Hutchinson's dedication to the cause is even more remarkable when you consider that he had no prior experience in this field. Before his involvement in child trafficking, he co-founded Bridge Investment Group, a large real estate investment firm based in Salt Lake City. But after exiting this business, he went on to help fund efforts to identify, rescue, rehabilitate, and organize adoptions of children who have been trafficked.
For Hutchinson, protecting the truly innocent is something that every person from every political view, every religion, and every race can get behind. "Every human on the planet can come together to save children from something this horrible," he says. His work is a testament to the fact that we can make a difference, no matter how small our efforts may seem.
Hutchinson's story is a reminder that we can all do our part to make the world a better place. It is never too late to get involved and make a difference. With dedication and perseverance, we can all be heroes in our own right. As Hutchinson puts it, "We have the power to make a difference, and we have a moral obligation to do so".

Social media is an issue for many leaders, they fear it and they aren't sure how to interact with it. We saw the Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison recently very uncomfortable in front of the cameras and he tried to force a photo opportunity by grabbing a woman's hand. Almost not aware that of course someone was filing him on a phone and he could control the narrative as he wanted. He couldn't, it was painful to watch and it's moments like this that scare a lot of leaders, as they can't control it as they would like to.

What's the line between managing for performance and people feeling monitored? It looks obvious on paper but is less so in the reality of those that are having the experience. This podcast was triggered by the news from the BBC that Barclays bank in the UK "says it has scrapped a system that tracked the time employees spent at their desks and sent warnings to those spending too long on breaks". The intent was good we are sure but in implementation, something got lost in the narrative. Here we explore this issue.

This is a big one. Can organisations really be socially responsible? Does the reality of making money and keeping your job allow people to be genuinely human and if so can they make it in this 'show me the money' environment.
It is the BIG question and one that is ever increasing as the millennial starts to push back against the contradictions that exist in the values and the actions of many organisations.
I offer the idea of 'cumulative way of behaving' being the reference point what a culture is and what is will tolerate.

We have Mandy Hickson. Mandy was the second woman to fly the Tornado GR4 operationally, completed three tours of duty and flew 45 missions over Iraq.
Mandy learned not to shy away from failure. After two unsuccessful attempts at the RAF flying aptitude tests, reaching the limit of times that they can be taken, her goals appeared to be unattainable. Undeterred, Mandy went on to join the RAF as an Air Traffic Controller and continued to make her case for becoming a pilot throughout her officer training. Finally, the RAF decided to offer her pilot training as a test case, having observed her skills in the real world.
The only female aircrew, Mandy trained on the Firefly, Tucano and Hawk aircraft, and was awarded many prizes for leadership. She was the second woman to fly the Tornado GR4 operationally, and completed three tours of duty and flew 45 missions over Iraq.
This is a great insight into her journey, the hurdles that would have stopped most people in their tracks and an insight into what it is to operate in this world.

I was asked to do a video for a leadership project for young people involved in 'Make a Wish' - Ireland by John Doran. It got a very positive response:
"Your talk is absolutely super . Talk about hitting the nail on the head!
I played it to my students today and they really engaged with it. In particular the question you pose about how do people experience you.
We can’t thank you enough , it will really make a difference."
So I thought I'd share it.
The question that I was asked to address was basically:
"What would you offer youngsters that are starting out in life?"
So of course they don't have to be 18 years old, any age would work.
Anyway, I thought I'd share.....Hope it adds value.

Duke Stump blew me away in this episode. I am rarely affected by a persons manner, insight and personal characterists. Duke has 'something', that I put down to honesty. He is honest with himself and then with you. Duke's hoensty though comes from a place of consciousness, he is purposeful, there is intent in his life and his conversations. He appears to me to be an explorer that wants you to join him on the quest.
His new project Bonfire With Soul is a revelation. YOU HAVE TO CHECK IT OUT.
Cited by Forbes as one of the top 50 Game-Changing CMO's, I have spent the last 30+ years as an inspired protagonist helping to build iconic global brands (NIKE, Seventh Generation, Lululemon). Duke loves building bonfires with soul: powerful, emotionally charged brands that stand for something meaningful in the world.
In addition, he has served in BOD and mentor roles with The Biomimicry Institute, 21c Hotels, Unreasonable Group, Healthy Child Healthy World and Love Your Brain.
A lover of nature, slow food, horsemanship and yoga, Duke and his family live on a small ranch in idyllic Ojai, CA along with horses, dogs, cats and chickens. Intoxicated with culture, empathetic leadership and strategy. Unique bonfire brand philosophy and strategy that goes against the grain of conventional thinking.
His inspirations come from a diverse range of sources including but not limited to nature, horsemanship, Buckminster Fuller, Jiddu Krishnamurti, introverts, yoga and music.

Wendy Addison's act of reporting corruption at LeisureNet Ltd in South Africa in 2000 began one of the biggest corporate disasters in South African history. Standing up for her principles and values, Wendy showed courage and a willingness to endure danger and the potential of losing both her livelihood and life, by taking a moral stand against bribery and corruption.
She was ousted as a whistleblower. On one side were the wrongdoers, still with the credibility and authority of their positions and a wealth of resources behind them. On the other side Wendy was discredited in the public's eyes, unemployed, unemployable (because of the notoriety of the case), running out of money, receiving death threats and having lost the support of friends and family.
Wendy's story is one of courage and endurance, of hope and justice. It covers ambition, corporate greed and skulduggery, telling the truth and alienation from a society that misguidedly applauds coveted wealth. It's about how life can dramatically shift from success to begging on the streets of London without warning.
The players in her story are many and varied: from the corporate world to the judiciary, governments and the UN.
Wendy's battle has been for what's 'right' and along the way she has exposed much of what is 'wrong' in the world. It's about Truth or Dare or rather 'Daring to tell the truth.
Wendy is a critical thinker and a powerful speaker with fresh insights that both entertain and inspire.
She has spoken to thousands of people across three continents with past engagements including Tedx Tokyo, the United Success Women's Entrepreneurial Symposium in Amsterdam, the CFA Institute's Annual Travelling Conference in Africa and Mauritius as well as numerous corporate speaking engagements and university lectures.
