Today’s special guest, James E Hibbard, may not be a household name, but I’m pretty sure you’ve seen him in many classic movies and TV shows. 

In a career spanning over 65 years, our guest has been a highly respected dancer, singer, actor, choreographer, director and teacher. His list of credits is truly jaw dropping. He’s appeared in dozens of iconic movies including “Gypsy”, “Bye Bye Birdie”, “The Swinger”, “Thoroughly Modern Millie”, ‘Hello Dolly”, “Finian’s Rainbow”, “Marriage on the Rocks”, and a staggering total of SIX movies with Elvis Presley: “Viva Las Vegas”, “Kissin’ Cousins”, “Girl Happy”, “Roustabout”, “Spinout”, “Clambake” and “Easy Come, Easy Go”. On television, he’s appeared in a whole slew of classic shows like “The Beverly Hillbillies”, “Batman”, “The Lucy Show”, “MacGyver”, and as a dancer and choreographer, he’s worked on numerous variety shows and TV Specials with Dean Martin, Tom Jones, Paul Anka, Bobby Vinton, Anne Murray, Nancy Sinatra, Ann-Margret, Peggy Fleming, and he even choreographed the 2002 TV movie, “It's a Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie”. 

He’s worked with the greatest legendary stars in history including Mickey Rooney, Donald O’Connor, Julie Andrews, Elvis Presley, Ann-Margret, Diana Ross, Sonny & Cher, Raquel Welch, Tina Turner, James Brown, The Beach Boys, The Mamas and the Papas – and believe me, I’m just scratching the surface. On stage, our guest has worked in productions of “West Side Story”, “Anything Goes”, “Godspell”, “Best Little Whorehouse in Texas”, “Cabaret”, “Little Shop of Horrors”, “Guys and Dolls”, “The Pajama Game”, and he also appeared in the world premiere of the rock opera, “Tommy”, at the Aquarius Theatre in Los Angeles.  

And his most recent film and television appearances include movies like “Wrongfully Accused”, “Angels in the End Zone” and “Good Boys”, and TV movies including “The Swinging Nutcracker”, “Descendants” and “Descendants 3” and “Freaky Friday”, and TV series including “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist”, “Julie and the Phantoms”, “The Man in the High Castle”, “Batwoman” and “Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies”. 

In 2003, the West Coast Tap Collective honoured our guest with a Lifetime Achievement Award, and in 2004, he received a star on the British Columbia Entertainment Walk of Fame.

Today’s guest, Sandy Duncan, is a highly acclaimed and beloved actress, singer and dancer who has been dazzling audiences for 6 decades in every medium of the entertainment world. 

On the big screen, she starred in “Star Spangled Girl”, for which she was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress. And that same year, she received another Golden Globe nomination for most promising female newcomer for her delightful performance in the Disney movie, “The Million Dollar Duck”. She also appeared in a number of other great movies like “The Cat From Outer Space” and “Never Again”, and she was unforgettable as “Pinocchio” in the wonderful 1976 TV movie, “Pinoccio” co-starring Danny Kaye and Flip Wilson. And of course, we all remember her stellar performance as “Missy Anne Reynolds” in the groundbreaking TV miniseries, “Roots”, for which she received an Emmy Award nomination for outstanding supporting actress. 

She starred in several TV sitcoms, starting with “Funny Face”, for which she received an Emmy Award nomination for outstanding lead actress in a comedy series. She then starred in “The Sandy Duncan Show”. And then, in 1987, she astonished the whole world by achieving something that many people thought was impossible: she took over the lead in Valerie Harper’s TV sitcom, “Valerie”, after Ms. Harper left the show, which was ultimately renamed “The Hogan Family”, and she actually made the show better, and kept it going successfully for a further four seasons, which is a truly remarkable accomplishment that no one else in this business could ever have done unless they had the immense popularity and likeability of our guest.  

She guest starred in many classic TV shows like “Bonanza”, “The Six Million Dollar Man”, “The Bionic Woman”, “Law & Order: SVU”, and she starred in one of my all-time favourite TV movies, “My Boyfriend’s Back” with Jill Eikenberry and Judith Light. She was also a regular on “Hollywood Squares” and numerous TV game shows, and she guest starred on every major variety show including “The Sammy Davis Jr. Show”, “The Jackie Gleason Show”, “The Sonny and Cher Show”, “The Flip Wilson Show”, “Laugh-In” and dozens more. And get this: in the late 70s, our guest received four consecutive nominations for a Photoplay Gold Medal Award for Favourite Variety Star.   

And on Broadway, our guest has had a stellar career, with THREE Tony Award nominations, for her performances in “Canterbury Tales”, “The Boy Friend”, and “Peter Pan”. She won a Drama Desk Award for her performance in “The Boy Friend”, and she received ANOTHER Drama Desk Award nomination for her work in “Peter Pan”. Her other Broadway performances include “My One and Only”, “Chicago” and “Finding Neverland”. She’s starred in numerous national tours of “Peter Pan”, “My One and Only” and “The King and I”. 

And off-Broadway, she won a Theatre World Award for her performance in “The Ceremony of Innocence”. She’s also starred in many theatrical productions including “No, No Nanette”, “Driving Miss Daisy”, “The Glass Menagerie” and many more. 

And if all of that weren’t enough, our guest is a recipient of the prestigious National Rehabilitation Hospital Victory Award, which is given to individuals who exhibit exceptional courage and strength in the face of adversity. And most recently, she received the Medal of Arts Award from her home state of Texas.

Today’s guest, Ernest Lee Thomas, is a beloved actor, producer and author who is perhaps best known for his portrayal of “Roger Thomas” – better known as "Raj" - on the immensely popular sitcom “What's Happening!!”, and the equally popular sequel, “What's Happening Now!!”. And of course, we all loved him as “Mr. Omar” on “Everybody Hates Chris”.  

But beyond those iconic roles, our guest has had a long and distinguished career.  He starred on Broadway in “Love For Love” and “The Member Of The Wedding”. On the big screen, you’ve seen him in dozens of movies including “A Piece of the Action”, “Malcolm X”, “Paroled”, “Funny People”, “The Pastor and Mrs. Jones”, “Revenge”, “79 Parts”, “Loved to Death”, “The Gods 2: The Dark Side”, and the multi-award winning short film, “Earworm”, for which he won a Best Actor award at the Indie Horror Film Festival.

Today’s guest, John McCook, is a highly popular veteran actor who first gained prominence for his performance as “Lance Prentiss” in “The Young and the Restless”, for which he won a Soapy Award in 1977 for Most Exciting New Actor.  And in 1987, he created the role of “Eric Forrester” in “The Bold and the Beautiful”.  

In fact, he and his fellow cast member Kelly Lang, who plays “Brooke Logan”, are the only two cast members of “The Bold and the Beautiful” who have remained on the show from the very beginning, for 37 years so far.  For his groundbreaking work on that show, our guest has earned 5 Daytime Emmy Award nominations, WINNING an Emmy Award in 2022 for Outstanding Performance by a Lead Actor in a Drama series, as well as a Soap Hub Award. He’s also received 2 Soap Opera Digest Award nominations, and an Online Film and Television Association Award nomination.

On Broadway, she appeared in 8 shows including “Cactus Flower”, “The Good Doctor”, “The Night of the Iguana”, “Steel Magnolias”, and “The Roommate”. Her list of theatre credits is spectacular, and she’s starred in everything from Shakespeare and Ibsen to Arthur Miller, Lillian Hellman and of course, Neil Simon - and everyone in between. Her performance off-Broadway in "Little Gem" earned her an Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Performance by an Actress in a Play, and her starring role in the 1999 revival of “The Prisoner of Second Avenue” in London, earned her a Grammy Award nomination for Best Comedy Album.

Today’s guest, Nicholas Hammond, is a highly popular and beloved actor, writer and director whom we first fell in love with in 1965 when he played “Friedrich von Trapp”, the eldest son of the von Trapp children, in the classic movie, “The Sound of Music”. 

And of course, we remember him as the very first live action “Peter Parker” – better known as “Spider-Man” – in the 1977 movie “Spider-Man” and the 2 sequels, “Spider-Man Strikes Back” and “Spider-Man: The Dragon’s Challenge”, as well as on the iconic TV show, “The Amazing Spider-Man”.

Today’s guest, Candace Bushnell, is a best-selling novelist, journalist, TV producer, and, most recently, the star of her own one-woman show. 

She’s the celebrated author of “Sex and the City”, which formed the basis for the phenomenally successful TV show that aired for 6 seasons on HBO, followed by 2 hugely popular movies, and the re-boot TV series “And Just Like That”, currently in production for its third season.

On television, we remember her as “Morgan Winslow” on “Hello Larry”, “Nadine Berkus” in “Love and War”, “Charlotte St. John” in “Oh Baby”, “Connie Randolph” in Bette Midler’s TV sitcom entitled, “Bette”, “Attorney Jordan Kendall” on “The West Wing”, and “Veronica” in “Sensitive Skin”, in addition to a whole slew of guest starring roles in many TV shows including “Diff’rent Strokes”, “ER”, “Murphy Brown”, “Friends”, “King of the Hill”, “The Good Wife”, “The Affair” and “The Good Fight”, to name only a few. 

And on the stage, our guest has appeared on Broadway in 7 shows including “I Love My Wife”, for which she won a Theatre World Award, “Social Security”, for which she won a Drama Desk Award, “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels”, for which she was nominated for a Tony Award, a Drama Desk Award, and an Outer Critics Circle Award, “A Day in the Death of Joe Egg”, for which she was nominated for a Tony Award and a Drama Desk Award, and of course, her unforgettable performance in “Into the Woods”, for which she WON a Tony Award, a Drama Desk Award and an Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Actress in a Musical. And off Broadway, she won a Drama Desk Award for her performance in “It’s Only a Play”, and she was nominated for an Outer Critics Circle Award for her performance in “Sons of the Prophet”. She’s also appeared in many other stage productions including “Fiddler on the Roof”, “Hamlet”, “On a Clear Day You Can See Forever”, and “The Normal Heart”, to name only a few. 

And most recently, our guest has written and directed an excellent feature film called “The Grotto”, which has already won a number of prestigious film festival awards.  The movie tells the story of a woman in the midst of an emotional upheaval, who inherits a half-interest in a struggling nightclub, where she encounters eccentric performers and discovers a heartbreaking secret.

The movie will be released in theatres and on major streaming platforms in the very near future, so please keep an eye out for it. Our guest is currently in New York preparing to star in the World Premiere of Joshua Harmon’s play entitled, “We Had a World”, which will be presented by the Manhattan Theatre Club at the New York City Center Stage 2 from February 25 to April 13, 2025. Our guest has taken time out of her very busy rehearsal schedule to speak with me today.

Today’s guest, Peter K. Ackerman, is descended from Hollywood royalty. He grew up in the 1960s, as close as anyone can, to the world of classic television, at the height of his parents’ careers. 

His father was the legendary television producer Harry Ackerman, who brought us many classic TV shows including “I Love Lucy”, “Hazel”, “Dennis the Menace”, “The Donna Reed Show”, “Leave it to Beaver”, “Bewitched”, “The Flying Nun, “Gidget”, and many more shows.  

And his mother is the popular and beloved Emmy-nominated actress Elinor Donahue, who starred in many classic TV shows. She played “Betty Anderson”, the eldest child on “Father Knows Best”, she was “Ellie Walker” the pharmacist on “The Andy Griffith Show”, she played Felix Unger’s girlfriend “Miriam Welby” in “The Odd Couple”, she was “Kate Honeycutt” in “Days of our Lives”, she played “Gladys Peterson” in “Get a Life”, and every fan of “Star Trek: The Original Series” knows her as “Nancy Hedford” from the season 2 episode entitled “Metamorphosis”. She also guest starred in many other popular TV shows including “Newhart”, “Happy Days”, “Friends” and “Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman”. And who can ever forget her as “Bridget”, the nice saleslady in the department store who helps Julia Roberts in “Pretty Woman”?  

Our guest has had a fascinating career, first following in his parents’ footsteps, as an actor, then in production for TV commercials, music videos featuring iconic stars like Madonna, Aerosmith, Janet Jackson and Peter Frampton, and then in television production, working on classic shows like “Full House” and “Friends”, before leaving show business and finding his true calling in the church, and becoming an Episcopal priest in 2007.

Today’s special guest, Renée Taylor, is a highly popular and beloved, Oscar nominated, multi-award winning actress, writer, producer and director who has been dazzling audiences for over 60 years. 

We all remember her portrayal of the quintessential Jewish mother, “Sylvia Fine” - Fran Drescher’s mother - on the hit TV series “The Nanny”, for which she received an Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. But her stellar career and body of work extend far beyond that popular show.

Today’s special guest, Dick Cavett, is not only a legendary television personality, talk show host and author. He is the reason I wanted to be an interviewer – he’s my inspiration, my role model and my American Idol.  

From 1968 to 2007, on a variety of TV networks and in different formats, our guest hosted one of the world’s most popular TV talk shows. With his keen intellect and unique wit, he set the bar for intelligent, sophisticated conversation with the world’s greatest legendary stars. He was known as “the thinking man’s talk show host”, and his show offered a forum for controversial opinions and issues ranging from feminism, domestic and international affairs, to the Vietnam war. 

The Dick Cavett Show became a home away from home for the top stars from the world of movies, television and sports. And of course, through him, we got to know the greatest comedy legends of all time.

Today’s guest, Tim Matheson, is a highly popular and respected actor, director and producer whose portrayal of the smooth talking “Eric Stratton” - better known as "Otter" - in the blockbuster movie, “National Lampoon's Animal House”, made him a household name.  

Some of his other movie credits include “Divorce American Style”, “Yours, Mine and Ours”, “How to Commit Marriage”, “Magnum Force”, “Almost Summer”, “1941”, “To Be or Not to Be”, “Fletch”, “A Very Brady Sequel”, “Van Wilder”, and “The Etruscan Smile”, for which he and his fellow cast members were named Best Ensemble Cast at the Boston Film Festival.

Today’s guest, Adrian Zmed, is an iconic and beloved actor, singer, TV personality, producer and director who is well remembered for his portrayal of “Officer Vince Romano” in the highly popular TV show, “T.J. Hooker”. 

And of course, we all know and love him as the leader of the T-birds, “Johnny Nogerelli” in “Grease 2”, and as the hilarious “Jay O’Neill” in the hit movie “Bachelor Party” co-starring Tom Hanks.  But our guest has had a long and diverse career that goes well beyond those 2 memorable roles. 

On the big screen, he appeared in “The Final Terror”, “Eyewitness to Murder”, “The Other Woman”, “Unconditional Love”, “The Drone Virus”, “The Craving Heart”, and many more great movies.  And on TV, in addition to “T.J. Today’s guest, Julie Garfield, is the daughter of one of the most popular, beloved and highly acclaimed actors of the 20th century: John Garfield.  

He received Academy Award nominations and New York Film Critics Circle Award nominations for his performances in “Body and Soul” and “Four Daughters”, for which he also won a National Board of Review Award. His other iconic movies include “They Made Me a Criminal”, “Juarez”, “Daughters Courageous”, “The Sea Wolf”, “Pride of the Marines”, “The Postman Always Rings Twice”, “Humoresque”, “Body and Soul”, “Gentleman’s Agreement”, “Force of Evil”, “The Breaking Point”, and many more.  

He also appeared in over a dozen Broadway shows including “Golden Boy”, “The Big Knife”, “Counsellor-at-Law”, “Peer Gynt” and many more.  In the early 1950’s, during the McCarthy era, John Garfield was victimized and blacklisted, because he adamantly refused to "name names" when he testified before the House Un-American Activities Committee.  

Tragically, he passed away of a heart attack in 1952 at the age of 39, largely brought on by the stress of the persecution he faced as a blacklisted actor. 

Our guest is Mr. Garfield’s only living child, Julie Garfield. She’s had a most impressive career as an award winning actress in the theatre, both on and off Broadway, and in film and television.  And for the past 20 years, she has been focussing exclusively on her career as a prominent artist. Her paintings and drawings have been featured in many prestigious galleries and exhibits, especially in New York City.

Today’s show is all about an artist who is widely considered to be America’s greatest musical poet laureate and visionary, Bob Dylan. 

He is an artist of transcendent historical importance, both as a cultural hero and an anti-hero. His songs have become part of our cultural DNA. In 1986, a groundbreaking book entitled “Bob Dylan: No Direction Home” was written by the renowned New York Times music critic, Robert Shelton, whose very first article about Bob Dylan brought him national attention and launched him as a celebrity. The book is uniquely insightful, because it’s much more than a biography. It’s an eyewitness account, because Mr. Shelton was a close friend of Bob Dylan’s, and he was there for all of the pivotal events in Dylan’s career in the first half of his life.  This book comes as close as any book can, to finding the essence of the real Bob Dylan, and pierces through all the myths about this elusive artist. Mr. Shelton not only conducted an extensive and profound interview with Bob Dylan - he is the ONLY person EVER to have interviewed Dylan’s parents. Sadly, Mr. Shelton passed away in 1995, but in 2011, a much more complete version of the book was published, which included many parts that were left out of the original edition. 

And now, a brand new edition is being released, thanks to our guest. She is a renowned journalist, broadcaster and author whose work has been featured in the most prestigious publications around the world.  She’s a contributing editor to theartsdesk.com, she’s a contributor to The New Grove Dictionary of Music & Musicians, she was a founding trustee of the Desmond Elliott Prize for first novels, she served as Editor of the business weekly, “Publishing News”, she was the founding Editor of “Book Brunch”, the online bulletin and website for the publishing industry, she has lectured at numerous universities, and as a broadcaster, she has interviewed everyone from Presidents Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton, to Leonard Cohen, Judy Collins, Janis Ian, André Previn, Vanessa Redgrave and Joan Baez.

Founded in 1952 by bass singer Herb Reed, The Platters brought us 40 hit singles, including the classic songs, “Only You”, “The Great Pretender”, “My Prayer”, “Twilight Time”, “Smoke Gets In Your Eyes”, “Harbor Lights”, “Enchanted”, “Winner Take All”, “The Magic Touch”, and many more. The Platters was the first Black group to reach international superstardom, with over 80 million records sold worldwide.

Today’s guest, Joel Brokaw, can truly be said to be descended from Hollywood royalty – perhaps not in the traditional sense, because neither of his parents were movie stars. But his father was one of the most successful, powerful and respected agents in the history of Hollywood, Norman Brokaw. 

Throughout his career he represented some of the greatest legendary stars in history, including Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, Barbara Stanwyck, Loretta Young, Susan Hayward, Natalie Wood, Kim Novak, Clint Eastwood, Dick Van Dyke, Donna Summer and many more, including Olympic athletes like Mark Spitz, and former President Gerald Ford and his wife Betty Ford. 

He was renowned for his professionalism, integrity, sincerity, enthusiasm and above all, his steadfast loyalty and devotion to his clients. But until now, no one really knew the man behind the sterling professional reputation, because he always shied away from center stage, preferring instead to shine the spotlight on his superstar clients. 

But now our guest, who is Norman Brokaw’s son, has written a highly compelling and insightful book about his father entitled, “Driving Marilyn: The Life and Times of Legendary Hollywood Agent Norman Brokaw.” The book tells the story of Norman Brokaw’s remarkable 60-year journey, beginning in 1943, when at the age of 16, he started working in the mail room at the illustrious William Morris Agency, and then worked his way up to President and then Chairman and CEO of the company.  

Our guest spent 30 years as a publicist in Hollywood, representing many big stars, including Tyler Perry, for whom he ended up ghost writing the #1 New York Times Bestseller, “Don’t Make a Black Woman Take Off Her Earrings: Madea’s Uninhibited Commentaries on Love and Life”. That book, released in 2006, launched our guest into a new and highly successful career as an author, collaborator and ghost writer.

Steve was born in New York City to the multi-talented Mel Tormé and the former model/actress, Candy Tockstein. They were divorced when Steve was young, and Candy married Hal March, an actor/comedian best known as the host of NBC-TV’s The $64,000 Question Show, but who also starred on Broadway in Neil Simon’s Come Blow Your Horn. An avid baseball player and fan growing up in Westchester County, N.Y., Steve's dream was to play for the Yankees. He was a devoted fan who listened to games on the radio in the basement of his family home. Following every game, he’d switch to the Top 40 music stations and sing along with such artists as The Four Seasons, Nat King Cole, The Temptations, Ricky Nelson, and Gene Pitney. With his natural ear for harmonies, his favorite quickly became and remains The Beatles. By the age of 12, he knew that he wanted to be a performer, and at 13 he earned his first paycheck fronting his own band. After his family moved to Beverly Hills, he continued to develop as a musician and his influences grew to include Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, Todd Rundgren, and Steely Dan.

Steve recorded his first LP, Lucky, for United Artists Records, supporting it with a 20-city, national concert tour. Upon returning to California, he produced and sang on Liza Minnelli’s Columbia Records release Tropical Nights, which became a favorite of New York dance clubs.

He spent three years as the featured vocalist on ABC-TV’s $100,000 Name That Tune and also hosted two Los Angeles-based television shows, Video 22 (a precursor to MTV) and Box Office America.

Steve’s first solo project after Full Swing was his CD Swingin’ at the Blue Moon Bar & Grille, recorded with a crackerjack big band. It also features a duet between Steve and Mel (“Straighten Up and Fly Right”) and showcases an improvised scat lesson between father and son. That disc was followed up by The Night I Fell For You, featuring an alluring arrangement of the Lerner & Loewe classic “On the Street Where You Live,” and a number of Steve’s original tunes, many penned with longtime collaborator, pianist and musical conductor Steve Rawlins. Those two releases were followed up by The Essence of Love, a collection of some of the most romantic, well-crafted standards ever written, including “Blue Skies,” “Stardust,” “Every Time We Say Goodbye,” and a playful duet with jazz icon Diane Schuur on “The One I Love Belongs To Somebody Else.” His current jazz CD, So Far (on iTunes, cdbaby.com, and amazon.com), combines the most popular material from his first three CDs into one “best of” recording.

Steve’s latest CD, Inside/Out, goes back to his roots as a singer/songwriter, words and music written by Steve, on which he not only sings but plays keyboards and guitar. 

Because a natural interest exists in hearing Steve sing the songs his dad was known for, he did a 28-city cross-country tour for Columbia Artists Mgt. Inc. (CAMI) entitled Tormé Sings Tormé. Steve is proud to have had the opportunity to pay tribute to his father in a show featuring a ten-piece band playing the extraordinary arrangements penned by Marty Paich exclusively for Mel and including a multimedia presentation of photos and video clips.

Curtis Stigers is an American jazz singer. He achieved a number of hits in the early 1990s, most notably the international hit, "I Wonder Why" (1991), which reached No. 5 in the UK and No. 9 in the US.

Stigers was born in Hollywood, California and grew up in Boise, Idaho.  He started his music career as a teenager, playing in rock and blues bands, as well as receiving an education in clarinet and saxophone in high school in Boise.  He acquired much of his motivation for pursuing jazz from jam sessions led by Gene Harris at the Idanha Hotel. His song "Swingin' Down at Tenth and Main" is a tribute to those times with Harris. After receiving his diploma, he moved to New York City, intending to become a rock musician.  But he spent more time in jazz clubs singing and playing saxophone.

Arista released his debut album, which achieved multi-platinum sales.  His combination of rock and soul was also popular on the soundtrack to the movie The Bodyguard, which contained his version of "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love, and Understanding" by Nick Lowe.  Concord Jazz released Baby Plays Around, an album of that included Chris Minh Doky and Randy Brecker.  He recorded several more jazzy albums for Concord before turning to the country flavor of Let's Go Out Tonight with cover versions of songs by Steve Earle, Richard Thompson, and Hayes Carll.

He has worked with Elton John, Eric Clapton, Prince, Bonnie Raitt, Rod Stewart, The Allman Brothers Band and Joe Cocker. He sang a duet with Julia Fordham on her re-recording of "Where Does the Time Go?" on the 1998 compilation album The Julia Fordham Collection.

His song "I Wonder Why" reached No. 5 on the UK Singles Chart and No. 9 on the United States Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1991, while "You're All That Matters to Me" reached No. 6 as the follow-up single in the UK. In 2006, Stigers participated in the BBC Television show Just the Two of Us, where he sang with journalist Penny Smith. He was one of the soloists at a concert celebrating the MGM musical during the 2009 Proms season. His song "This Life" was for the American television show Sons of Anarchy. He also sang "John the Revelator" for the season one finale.

Today’s guest has written one of the most shocking books of deceit and trauma that  I’ve ever read.  

Knowing that she was adopted, she began searching at the age of 18, for her birth family.  What should have been a simple process to access her adoption records, turned into a gut-wrenching 30-year investigation and ordeal, because she discovered that she had been sold as a newborn baby in McCaysville, Georgia, by the town’s local doctor, Thomas Hicks, who had built up a lucrative business of selling babies.  Sometimes the mothers were in trouble and willingly gave their babies away.  And sometimes, the doctor lied to the mothers, told them their babies had died, and then sold them to desperate couples who couldn’t have children of their own.  

Over 200 babies were illegally sold or given away by Dr. Hicks in the 1950s and 60s.   In 1997 our guest broke this story to the media, which launched a deluge of birth mothers and illegally adopted children searching for the truth.  

In 2019, the TLC television channel produced a 3-part documentary series called “Taken at Birth”  about this story.  And last year, our guest released her book, entitled “Taken at Birth: Stolen Babies, Hidden Lies and my Journey to Finding Home”.

Along with acting, Anna is a singer/songwriter, with songs available on all streaming platforms she recorded her first single, called “Dislove”, and of course, as I mentioned, she co-starred in a major motion picture, “American Siege”.    She’s busy writing and developing new film projects.

Ms. Henein’s experience includes a wide range of criminal, quasi-criminal and regulatory litigation – as well as select civil litigation – representing individual, corporate and institutional clients both at the trial and appellate level. Ms. Henein has argued at all levels of court, frequently including the Ontario Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of Canada. Ms. Henein has been counsel on numerous high profile cases.

Ms. Henein received her LL.B. in 1989 from Osgoode Hall Law School and her Masters in Law from Columbia University in 1991.  She is certified by the Law Society of Ontario as a Specialist in Criminal Law.  Ms. Henein is the Past President of The Advocates’ Society (2010-2011), a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Law Commission of Ontario.  She is one of the founders of the Court of Appeal’s Appellate Duty Counsel Program.

Ms. Henein is a frequent lecturer.  She was an Adjunct Professor at Osgoode Hall Law School where she was co-chair of the Masters of Law Program. She frequently lectures at the Law Society of Ontario, The Advocates’ Society, the Ontario Bar Association, Criminal Lawyers’ Association and the National Judicial Institute in numerous areas including trial advocacy, evidence, appellate advocacy and substantive criminal law. Ms. Henein is co-editor of Martin’s Criminal Code, Martin’s Annual Criminal Practice, and Martin’s Related Criminal Statutes. She is the Associate Editor of the Canadian Criminal Cases.

Ms. Henein has been selected by her peers to be included in the 2010 list of Best Lawyers in Canada with the specialty of Criminal Defence. Ms. Henein is the recipient of the 2013 Laura Legge Award and has repeatedly been named one of Canada’s 25 Most Influential Lawyers by Canadian Lawyer Magazine. Today’s guest is a hardworking actress who is rapidly on her way to becoming a household name because of her recurring roles in TWO highly successful TV series which will be airing this year.  In the final season of “This is Us”, she plays Mandy Moore’s faithful nurse Laila, who helps her and the family through the ordeal of dementia.  And, starting May 6th, you can see her in the highly anticipated sequel to the wildly popular Amazon crime drama “Bosch”, which ran for 7 seasons and concluded last summer.  In this new series, called “Bosch: Legacy”, our guest plays a rookie police officer named Paulina Calderon.    

You may also recognize her from a number of other TV shows, including “ER”, “Without a Trace”, “Vida”, “NCIS”, “Good Trouble” and “iCarly”.  And she was very memorable in the role of “Laura Jones” in last year’s TV Christmas movie, “Mistletoe in Montana”, co-starring Melissa Joan Hart.   She’s been acting since she was 4 years old, and appeared on Broadway in “The Lion King” at the age of 9.   

This multi-talented woman has a cosmetology license AND a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology.   She’s also a passionate advocate for increasing and enhancing the rising presence of the Latino community, in the TV and film industry.

Today’s guest is Giedre Zickyte, a highly acclaimed filmmaker from Lithuania whose latest film, entitled “The Jump”, chronicles one of the Cold War's most complex and suspenseful episodes.   

On November 23, 1970, a Lithuanian seaman by the name of  Simas Kudirka, jumped from a Soviet fishing vessel that was anchored just off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard, onto the US Coast Guard ship “Vigilant”, desperately seeking political asylum.  The US Coast Guard, however, returned him to the Soviets, who convicted him of treason and sentenced him to 10 years in a concentration camp. This incident, commonly referred to as the US Coast Guard’s “Day of Shame”, is widely considered to be one of the biggest political blunders of the Cold War.  And it set off a series of protests throughout the United States and marked the beginning of a long political battle to save Mr. Kudirka and bring him and his family to America, which finally happened in 1974.    

The film is now available on Amazon, Apple TV and a number of other streaming platforms.  Our guest’s films, including “Baras”, “How We Played the Revolution”, “Master and Tatyana” and “I’m Not From Here", have won 14 Film Festival Awards.

Today’s special guest is one of the greatest singer-songwriters and performers of our time.  Melissa Manchester started out in 1971 as one of the “Staggering Harlettes”, the backup group to Bette Midler.  But soon after launching her tremendously successful solo career, she had her first top 10 hit, "Midnight Blue".

Her rich, powerful voice is unparalleled.  Her career is remarkable, not only for its longevity and accomplishments, but for its versatility.  She’s literally done it all.  She appeared with Bette Midler in the movie, “For the Boys”.  She co-wrote and starred in the musical, “I Sent a Letter to my Love”.  She’s composed songs for movies.  She starred in the national tours of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Music of the Night” AND “Song and Dance”, which I had the pleasure of seeing in Toronto.   She created the role of “Maddy” on the hit TV series “Blossom”.  Last November she was inducted into the Great American Songbook Foundation Hall of Fame.    

AND NOW, she’s released her 22nd album:  a brand new double CD LIVE CONCERT from 1977 that has NEVER been publicly available until now.

Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Legendary Actor, Producer and Author, Robert Wagner

Robert Wagner is one of the most popular and successful stars in the entertainment industry, boasting three hit television series and an impressive list of both feature and television films.  He has acted in over 100 films and made hundreds of television appearances in his 70+ year career.   

As a young man under contract to 20th Century Fox, Robert Wagner was cast by Darryl F. Zanuck in With a Song in My Heart. Although the part lasted a scant minute, his performance as a crippled soldier responding to the song of Susan Hayward’s Jane Froman brought immediate public reaction to the studio. Spencer Tracy saw his performance in Beneath the Twelve Mile Reef and requested Wagner for the role of his son in Broken Lance. Tracy was so impressed with Wagner, he cast him again as his brother in The Mountain. A small sample of Wagner’s numerous film credits includes Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story, The Pink Panther, The Curse of the Pink Panther, Midway, The Towering Inferno, Banning, Harper, Prince Valiant, The True Story of Jesse James, and All the Fine Young Cannibals. He starred with Joanne Woodward in her film debut, A Kiss Before Dying.  Antonio Banderas directed Wagner in Crazy in Alabama.  In the 1990s, he was introduced to a new legion of fans with the role of Number Two, the villainous henchman to Dr. Evil, the archenemy of Mike Myers’ title character in the Austin Powers trilogy.  

On television, Wagner starred in three long-running series.  He was nominated for an Emmy for his role as suave cat-burglar Alexander Mundy in It Takes a Thief with Malachi Throne and Fred Astaire.  He portrayed con man-turned-detective Pete Ryan in Switch with Eddie Albert and Sharon Gless.  And Wagner became a fan favorite as the debonair and charming millionaire/amateur detective Jonathan Hart in Hart to Hart with Stefanie Powers. 

Other illustrious television performances include starring with Jaclyn Smith in the top-rated miniseries, Windmills of the Gods — based on Sidney Sheldon’s best-selling novel; Angie Dickinson in the miniseries Pearl; Audrey Hepburn in Love Among Thieves; Lesley Anne Down in Indiscreet; and Elizabeth Taylor in There Must Be a Pony, which he also executive-produced. He appeared alongside such notable names as Philip Casnoff, Kyle Chandler, Cathy Lee Crosby, Leslie-Ann Down, and Billy Dee Williams in North and South: Book 3, Heaven and Hell.  Sir Laurence Olivier chose Wagner to star with him in the television adaptation of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.  Wagner’s wife, the late Natalie Wood, co-starred with them. 

In addition to his film and television ventures, Robert toured the world performing in A.R. Gurney’s Love Letters with Stefanie Powers.  They were the first to launch the tour internationally. After his tour with Powers ended, Wagner enjoyed the play so much, he continued performing it at charity events and around the world with his wife, actress Jill St. John.

Today’s guest is Melba Moore, the iconic, award-winning music superstar who’s been dazzling audiences with her incredibly beautiful and soulful 5-octave voice since she burst on the scene in the late 60s in the original cast of the Broadway musical, “Hair”.    

She then was one of the first Black women to win a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical, for her performance in “Purlie”.   She’s hosted 2 television variety shows and appeared in hit movies like “All Dogs Go to Heaven” and “The Fighting Temptations”.  She was the first African American woman to play “Fantine” on Broadway in “Les Miserables”.  But ultimately, it’s her FABULOUS voice that earned her THREE Grammy nominations and made her a music legend in songs like “Lean On Me," “This Is It," “You Stepped Into My Life," “Read My Lips”, "Love's Comin' At Ya," "Livin' For Your Love," "Falling", and "A Little Bit More" her #1 duet with Freddie Jackson.   She’s recorded 28 spectacular albums, including 2 sensational live albums, and a beautiful duet album entitled, “The Gift of Love”.   And NOW, she’s released her BRAND NEW album entitled, “Imagine”.  She’s received numerous awards including a Drama Desk Award, the Ellis Island Award, the Artist Guild Award, and the NAACP Spingarn Award.  She’s been inducted into the Official Rhythm & Blues Music Hall of Fame.  And her 5-decade career is being honoured with displays at the Grammy Museum, and the Smithsonian.

Melba Moore’s produced version of “Lift Every Voice and Sing" which was entered into the United States Congressional Record as the official Negro National Anthem in 1990, was just named an ‘American Aural Treasure,’ by the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress for Ms. Moore’s co-produced recorded rendition of the anthem.

For 38 years she was simply known as the wife of the most prolific writer and producer in television history, Aaron Spelling, who ran Hollywood’s largest and most successful production company.  He brought us such iconic TV shows as “The Mod Squad”, “Starsky & Hutch”, “Charlie’s Angels”, “Fantasy Island”, “The Love Boat”, “Dynasty”, “Beverly Hills 90210”, and many more.  As the wife of one of Hollywood’s most powerful executives, our guest’s entire identity was wrapped up in being his collaborator, cheerleader, executive assistant, housekeeper, trophy wife, companion and support – not to mention, a very involved mother of 2 children.   

After her husband died in 2006, she found herself at a profound crossroads, and over the course of the next few years, her transformation has been nothing short of astounding.

He received a set of drums as a gift for his 15th birthday in 1960 and when he was 18, formed the band "Gary and the Playboys" with four friends.  Joking at the lateness of bandmates to practice, Lewis referred to them as "playboys", and the name stuck. 

Their many hit songs, including “This Diamond Ring”, “Count me In”, “Save Your Heart for Me”, “Everybody Loves a Clown”, “She’s Just my Style”, “Sure Gonna Miss Her” and “Green Grass”, are part of the soundtrack of our lives.  With 8 Gold Singles, 17 Top 40 Hits, 4 Gold Albums, and 45 Million records sold worldwide, our guest is the first and only artist during the 1960s to have his  first 7 releases reach Billboard magazine's Top 10 on the Hot 100 chart.

Today’s guest is Patricia Grayhall, who has written a poignant, insightful and sometimes heart wrenching  memoir, chronicling her journey in the 60’s and 70’s, studying and training to be a doctor, and coming out as a lesbian, at a time when society disapproved of both for a woman.   

Her book is entitled, “Making the Rounds: Defying Norms in Love and Medicine”, and it’s a frank and very personal coming of age story, of her battle against rampant sexism in a male-dominated profession, while at the same time, striving to find an enduring, loving relationship during the free-wheeling sexual revolution and feminism of the 1970’s.    

Our guest graduated in 1975 from the University of Utah medical school.  She got the highest score in her class in the medical licensing exam.  She was the only female intern at the Boston University Hospital.  She then completed 2 residencies and earned 2 Master’s Degrees – in Public Health and Physiology -  from the Harvard School of Public Health.  In fact, she was the first resident in occupational and environmental medicine at Harvard.  She then completed her residency in internal medicine and went on to have a 40-year career as a specialist in Seattle, Washington, and ran her own medical consulting company.    

After retiring, she decided to write her memoir, which has just been released.

On July 23, 1982, during the filming of a key final scene in “Twilight Zone: The Movie”, veteran actor Vic Morrow and 2 young children were instantly killed, when a helicopter hovering above them crashed as a result of pyrotechnic special effect explosions.  It was the first time in Hollywood history that actors were killed on a movie set.   

Our guest’s book is entitled, “Fly By Night: The Secret Story of Steven Spielberg, Warner Brothers and the Twilight Zone Deaths”, and it reads like a mystery detective novel, where, piece by piece, the puzzle of what actually happened is put together, revealing a poorly planned, highly negligent and dangerous act, followed by a severely flawed investigation, leading to a well-organized cover-up by some of the most powerful people in Hollywood and their lawyers – and culminating in a highly publicized and dramatic 10 month trial, in which director John Landis and 4 other crucial players were ultimately acquitted of involuntary manslaughter charges.    

Given the recent tragedy involving Alec Baldwin that occurred on the set of “Rust”, the events that took place during the making of “The Twilight Zone Movie” have taken on new relevance on the issue of safety on a movie set.

She’s starred in numerous musical productions throughout the country and in London’s West End, including “Follies”, “Annie Get Your Gun”, Mack and Mabel”, “Gypsy”, “Can-Can”, “Pajama Game” and many more.  She’s appeared in many TV shows including HBO Specials, the Tonight Show, “Fame”, “Cheers”, “Family Ties”, and who can ever forget her as “Amanda Harris” in “Dark Shadows”.  And when she’s not busy choreographing a production, she frequently performs in concert with symphony orchestras, and on cabaret stages all over the country.   

She was one of the stars in “FOUR GIRLS FOUR”, a wonderful concert series with Andrea McArdle, Faith Prince and Maureen McGovern

Today’s special guest, Tony Moore, is a self-made man, whose remarkable journey from his humble beginnings and turbulent childhood in England, to a highly successful international business career, is the subject of his inspiring new book, entitled, “One of a Kind: Making Things Happen.”  

Our guest never knew his father, and lost his mother at the age of 5, having met her only 3 times in his life.  At the age of 8, he was ripped away from the only loving caregiver he’d ever had, his beloved foster mother whom he called “Auntie”.  He was forced to live with his abusive step-father, only to be sent to an orphanage the next year.  When he was finally placed in a loving home, his adoptive parents passed away, leaving him orphaned for a second time.   

He ended up in a boarding school, and then completed a 5-year engineering apprenticeship, ultimately leading to a hugely successful career at Alfa Laval and Tetra Pak, as head of global customer service operations.  His work took him all over the world.  His experience in business and in life, is diverse and impressive.  He was a professional singer.  He owned and operated a wine bar in West London.  He ran a perfume company, then developed a computer program that was used in the field of optometry, and then he ran the biggest glove production company in America, and was instrumental in improving uniform apparel and gloves for the US military.   

And now, he’s a co-founder of Briton Publishing, and a successful author of numerous books including “Sabato: The Untold Story”, co-authored with Antonio Sabato Jr., and “Liberty vs Tyranny”, co-authored with retired Colonel Andrew P. Today’s special guest, Bobby Moresco, is a highly respected, Academy award winning writer, director and producer whose body of work includes some of the greatest films in recent times.    

After studying acting in New York, he created the Actor’s Gym, which operates in New York and Los Angeles,  and provides a forum for developing new works for stage, film and television.  He’s written and directed over 30 plays, and in 1998 he directed Colin Quinn in “An Irish Wake” on Broadway.   He's created, written and produced many highly acclaimed, award-winning TV series including “Millenium”, “EZ Streets”, “Falconey”, “The Black Donnelly’s” and “100 Code”.   

On the big screen, he co-wrote and produced the blockbuster movie “Crash”, which earned him and co-writer and director Paul Haggis an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.  He also executive produced the 2008 TV series “Crash”, inspired by the movie.   In 2004, he co-produced the Academy award winning movie, “Million Dollar Baby”, followed by writing and directing “10th and Wolf”, and another one of my favourites, “Bent”.   

He wrote and has just completed directing his brand new film, “Lamborghini”, starring Frank Grillo, Mira Sorvino and Gabriel Byrne, which tells the story of legendary Italian automobile designer, Ferrucio Lamborghini.    

In addition to his Academy award, he’s won 19 other awards for his work, including a BAFTA award, a London Critics Circle Film Award, a Film Independent Spirit Award, a Broadcast Film Critics Association award, a Writers Guild of America award, and the Pioneer in Screenwriting Award at the Burbank International Film Festival.

DeMille, and the National Board of Review William K. Everson Award for Film History, for his prolific body of work.

Today’s guest, Razid Season, is one of the most intriguing and promising up and coming filmmakers in America. 

When I learned that a young filmmaker from Bangladesh, now living in New York, had made a movie about the Holocaust, in Yiddish, I knew that I had to not only see the film.  I had to invite the filmmaker on our show.   This short film, which has English subtitles, is entitled, “Kaddish”, and it’s now publicly available for streaming on our guest’s website.  So far, the movie has won TEN prestigious film festival awards, and it’s been screened at dozens of film festivals all over the world.  

Our guest completed his Masters in Fine Arts degree in Film, and won a filmmaking scholarship from the US State Department. Under that scholarship, he made a documentary called “Battle For Speech”, about the rise of radical Islam in Bangladesh.  His other films include “Statue of an Angel”, about a struggling, undocumented South Asian immigrant who learns his only son has joined a radical terrorist group back home.   His next film was “Chase”, about a Syrian refugee who is interrogated because of a suspicious money transfer.  After that, he made “Maze”, about a married Middle Eastern woman who manifests a latent desire to be freed from patriarchal bondage.   

Our guest has a passion for making films that deal with humanitarian issues, and that increase the visibility of minority communities whose voices are rarely heard in mainstream media.

Our guest studied at the Juilliard School of Drama, NYU, Circle in the Square and Northwestern.  And he holds a Masters of Fine Arts degree in playwriting and screenwriting from the University of California Riverside.  He’s written many critically acclaimed plays that have been produced all over the country, including “A Place at Forest Lawn”, The Lavender Mafia”, “The Man Who Killed the Cure”, “The Last Lifeboat”, and my favourite, “Marilyn, Mom & Me”, which won the prestigious Stanley Award for Drama this year.   

Our guest has been the assistant director for SIX Broadway plays, and he’s directed and produced Off-Broadway AND at regional theatres throughout the country and abroad.  He served as the Producing Artistic Director of the Long Beach Civic Light Opera in California, AND the Struthers Library Theatre in Pennsylvania.   He’s also a highly sought-after guest director, and he teaches playwriting at California State Fullerton, and Chapman University.   

He’s here to discuss his brand new book, entitled “The Art of Writing for the Theatre: An Introduction to Script Analysis, Criticism and Playwriting.”  The book provides practical advice for aspiring playwrights and theatre critics.  In addition to the wealth of instructive material, the book contains fascinating pearls of wisdom from interviews the author conducted with 18 internationally acclaimed playwrights, lyricists, librettists and critics.  

The book is rapidly becoming required reading in university theatre courses, but as you’re about to find out, the book is of interest not only to those aspiring to write for the theatre, but to every theatre lover, because it provides illuminating insights into the creative process.

Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Toni Tennille, Pop Music Legend of Captain and Tennille, Stage Star 

About Harvey's guest: 

Today’s special guest, Toni Tennille, is a popular music legend.  She’s a fabulous singer, songwriter and musician whose beautiful voice first took the world by storm in the seventies, in the musical duo “Captain and Tennille”.   

Their first big hit, “Love Will Keep Us Together”, was the number 1 song of 1975, and won a Grammy Award for Record of the Year.   A quick succession of 14 mega-hits followed, including:

“The Way I Want to Touch You”

“Shop Around”

“Do That To Me One More Time”

“Lonely Night”

“I’m On My Way”

“Can’t Stop Dancin’”

“You Never Done it Like That”, and of course, 

“Muskrat Love”.    

In addition to her 9 studio albums as part of “Captain and Tennille”, our guest recorded 6 solo albums, including “More Than You Know”, “All of Me”, “Do It Again”, “Never Let Me Go”, “Things Are Swingin'”, and my all-time favourite, “Incurably Romantic”.    

She and her former husband, Daryl Dragon, hosted their own prime time TV variety show, as well as 3 television specials.  And then, a few years later, she hosted her own daytime talk show.   She’s toured all over the country, singing the Great American Songbook with symphony orchestras.   And in 1997, she starred in the highly acclaimed national tour of “Victor/Victoria”.    

She also wrote a deeply poignant, best selling book entitled, “Toni Tennille: A Memoir”, in which she candidly shares her emotional evolution and some very important life lessons.   

And now, she’s preparing for the stage role of a LIFETIME.    From November 3 to the 20th, she’ll be starring in HELLO DOLLY at the Yavapai College Performing Arts Center in Prescott, Arizona.   

This is a woman whose voice brings warmth, emotion and accessibility to EVERY performance and EVERY song she sings.
