29 Sep 2021Ram Castillo on being wealthy by acquiring internal treasures00:31:24

Hey Giants, welcome to episode #83. If this is the first time you’re tuning in, thank you so very much for being here! This podcast explores the decision-making of people who have been exposed and have proven experience at a world-class level of specialisation. It is my deep belief that Giant living requires giant thinking and if you resonate with that, you might enjoy the portfolio of guests we’ve had on the show, from Kelly Slater, to multiple Shark Tank Investors, to Gold Medalist Olympians, to Musicians, Designers, Creatives, Founders and leaders of all types – for organisations such as Nike, Deloitte, VISA, Squarespace, Wordpress, CreativeLive, Vaynermedia and even The White House.

Now for those that have been a long-time, dedicated listener, firstly, I’d like to apologise for the radio-silence. I took a year off the podcast ‘grid’. Straight up. Without any announcement, I just needed a break. Which, in hindsight, I definitely could have managed, communicated and planned better. But this ... ‘time’ – gave me the space to untangle and to recalibrate. It gave me a new set of eyes and a new vantage point. It helped me refine what’s important; who I want to serve and how best (for now) to do it.

I want to serve entrepreneurs and business owners. Whether you’re a designer or in the creative industry, or not – it doesn’t matter. What matters is, you have a vision for a better world through your contribution, through your product, through your service. And I want to give you access to people, places, tools and knowledge to help you cut the guesswork, see the blind spots and succeed faster.

So on that note, regarding this Giant Thinkers Podcast, it’ll now be 8 curated episodes per year. An 8-episode season will run from October to November each year and my intention is for it to be of the highest quality. In storytelling, in thinking, in diversity, in vulnerability and in practicality.

To kick things off, for 2021 season 7, this episode is a solo piece. I recently delivered and recorded this talk for Breakfast With Champions – A club on Clubhouse which is a voice-based social app. And the keynote style talk I delivered was on ‘Wealth Wisdom Wellbeing’. My position was that being rich doesn’t necessarily mean being wealthy. Being wealthy could mean acquiring internal treasures for external change. That wealth accumulation is in the overcoming.

So if you’re someone that’s interested in hearing about my very personal journey and the 7 x key tips for attaining my version of true wealth, then this episode is for you.

Now a quick note from me, if we aren’t connected yet on Instagram, I invite you to follow me on my handle @TheGiantThinker as I share daily posts and stories on helping decision-makers, business owners and leaders get unstuck lightning fast through human-centred design methodologies, creative strategies and personal experiences. Send me a DM I’d love to hear from you! You can find me on my handle @TheGiantThinker.

Alright, let’s get stuck in.

I present to you … me – enjoy!!

19 Feb 2020Q&A on getting ahead, managing a team, overcoming anxiety, being resourceful and getting new design clients00:40:50

Giants welcome to episode #77 — a special, second solo Q&A episode with yours truly to kick start 2020. Questions submitted by you the listeners. I’ve curated the top 7 based on the most similar questions asked, and also the ones I felt would be the most widely useful or applicable.

To help you skip to the answer most relevant to you, as I know many of you are time poor, I’ll list all the questions out below.

The seven questions I’ve answered in order are:

Q1. Brittany: Do you truly believe in the industry of graphic design that it’s all about who you know not what you know?

Q2. Carlos: How do you manage different personalities in a design team successfully, the good and the bad?

Q3. Jessica: How to overcome anxiety in a creative process when you start to develop your business or when you talk to clients, and to be confident in whatever you are doing?

Q4. Joy Phala: Social media marketing related … I use LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter to market my services ... and I’ll usually post pictures of completed projects. Now, that remains a very small pool of content to pull from. When I don’t have completed projects, what else would you like to see, as a potential customer or as a potential employer … What else would you like to see on my pages that would increase likability and build trust and eventually lead to a sale?

Q5. Keturah: What are the best tips, tricks and advice you have for getting new clients within the design industry?

Q6. Richard: What do you do as a designer when you have a set of goals, but to reach them you need some amount of resources and you don’t have those resources. What do you do in the meantime? What do you do to attain those goals?

Q7. Simona: In your line of work, you’re constantly pushing the boundaries on design and on business, and I’m sure there are things that you’re not always 100% confident in – so could you talk us through your thought process on how to overcome those fears and how to get past them?

So they are the 7 questions I’ve attempted to answer. By all means take it with a grain of salt. It’s my two cents and subjective at the end of the day. But I do hope it’s helpful and if you’d like me to do more of these, let me know on Instagram via a DM to my handle: TheGiantThinker

Welcome to episode #82 if this is the first time you’re tuning in, thank you so very much for being here, my name is Ram Castillo and this podcast explores the decision-making of people who have been exposed and are experienced in a particular expertise or specialisation. It is my deep belief that Giant living requires giant thinking and if you resonate with that, you might enjoy the portfolio of guests we’ve had on the show, from Kelly Slater, to Shark Tank Investors, to Olympians, to Musicians, to Designers / Creatives and leaders of all types.

All their products are made from natural ingredients and are all Australian made and 100% Aussie owned. Her background is in large scale Project Management within the Financial Services industry, but always dreamed of having her own company ever since she was a child.

Fast forward 10 years, she is a mum of 3, Twisted now manufacture and sell take home tubs, multipacks and single serve cups to over 5000 outlets across Australia — including a national distribution deal with Woolworths and more recently Costco Australia and Coles Supermarkets.

They are also the ONLY 'ice cream style' product that is approved for sale in School Canteens by the Australian Government — 2 million Australian school kids enjoy Twisted yoghurt in their lunch break.

Some of the topics we spoke about include:

01 Jul 2018Candice Kumai on the Japanese practice of golden repair and celebrating our imperfections01:04:47

Giants welcome to episode #62. Today we have an internationally-renowned wellness writer, chef and content creator. She’s in fact a classically trained chef, who has cooked on the line at several restaurants. And impressively (but not surprisingly) was the youngest chef competing in the first season of Top Chef. Other accomplishments include being a former tv host, former-model-turned wellness journalist, and a five-time best-selling author. ELLE magazine describes her as “The Golden Girl of the Wellness World.” She sits on The Well+Good Council and was named one of Arianna Huffington’s “Top 20 New Role Models in 2017.” Her mother is Japanese and her father is Polish-American.

Some of the topics we spoke about include:

  • How we can harness ‘Kintsugi’ for healing and strength – which is actually the Japanese practice of golden repair – we elaborate on this in depth.
  • We also chat about core principles such as ‘Gaman’ — which infers: ‘Live with great resilience’ and ...
  • Shikata ga nai — that means: Accept what cannot be helped.

This is a rollercoaster episode – we share many laughs and many vulnerabilities … including some tears.

So if that sounds appealing and If you’re interested in the intersection of culinary arts, Japanese philosophy and wellness, then you are in for an absolute treat.

28 Feb 2019Cesar Santos, Cuban-American portrait painter on making a living as an artist01:19:19

Giants, this is episode #67! Today’s guest is a contemporary Cuban-American artist and portrait painter, best known for his ‘Syncretism’, a term he coined in 2011 to describe paintings where he presents two or more art tendencies in aesthetic balance. His work harmonises both classical and modern interpretations juxtaposed within each painting.

When he moved to America with his family aged 12, he got the real taste for the American Dream: “The worst thing that could happen in America was always a luxury in comparison to the Cuban lifestyle” (where he’s originally from).

He studied at the Miami Dade College, then attended the New World School of the Arts for a period of time and even relocated to Florence for further painting education. The artist has received numerous accolades around the world, including the Grand Prize and People's Choice Award at the Academy of Realist Art Boston, First Prize at the Grand Central Academy Portrait Competition, The Hall of Fame Award at Miami Dade College and First Place at The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Some of the topics we spoke about include:

  • Advice for people wanting to make a living as an artist
  • How his physical activity feeds in with his life as a painter
  • The role of an artist in the age of technology
  • And the business side of being a painter.

So if you’re thinking about becoming a full-time artist, or looking for ways to channel your creativity, then this is for you – as we uncover what makes an artist thrive.

30 Aug 2019Chris Zumwalt, CEO of BridgeClimb Sydney, on being a Servant Leader01:07:49

Giants, this is episode #73! Today we have the CEO of BridgeClimb Sydney, which is the #1 ranked experience in Australia. To date, over 4 million people from more than 140 countries have climbed the Sydney Harbour Bridge since 1998, including Oprah Winfrey, Hugh Jackman and Jamie Oliver. Previously, our guest was the CEO of Scenic World Blue Mountains where he served a 10-year tenure.

His formal studies include a Bachelor's degree in Business, Management and Marketing – plus a Master’s in Information and Communication Sciences – both at Ball State University, Indiana.

He is a man of many layers, including being a servant leader that specialises in creating world-class cultures and building exceptional iconic experiences. He believes the heart of all business is people and that his role is to create a space where people can be the best version of themselves.

One of the things that really got me was when he said that “in order to truly know and lead a person you have to know their pain”. Personally, the conversation we had reminded me that – excelling in our careers and reaching ambitious goals, takes a tonne of inner-work – and requires showing up with an open heart and open mind when working with others.

Some of the topics we spoke about include:

  • The most unexpected thing that’s happened on the bridge during a climb
  • Setting up people in your company to be the best version of themselves
  • What ‘building exceptional iconic experiences’ means to him
  • What servant leadership is, and what we can learn from it.

So if you’d like to improve your leadership skills, or hear answers to some of the bigger questions, then this is for you – as we uncover what makes an empathic, courageous leader.

I present to you … the high-climbing, multi-layered, truth-seeker … Chris Zumwalt!

06 Nov 2017Dr. Jim Kokkinakis, expert optometrist on managing dry eyes and computer vision syndrome01:06:53

This is episode number 50! Thank you all for your support on the podcast journey so far. It has been a privilege to bring you 50 guests since starting mid-2015. In this episode we dig deep into an often overlooked topic, an area most of us take for granted, which is our eyes.

Our guest has been a top-practising optometrist for over 3 decades, and is one of Australia’s most experienced eye doctors. Currently an Adjunct Senior Lecturer at the University of New South Wales, he has also lectured internationally on advanced contact lens fitting, dry eye treatment and computer vision syndrome.

24 Jun 2020Viola Brand; professional Artistic Cyclist, 2X European Champion and 3X World Championship Silver Medalist on fear, falling and overcoming00:56:37

Hello Giants, this is episode number #78. I have been on a little hiatus, took a personal break and intentionally slowed down to reflect and re-assess – on what was most important to me at this time, weighing up priorities, exploring where I wanted to make the most impact.

These are thoughts that once you unpack, can turn into a 1000 person party in your head. If you’ve ever asked yourself the question “where might my time and energy make the most impact and difference in the world?” it can be incredibly confronting – however, when you create the space … when you truly switch off and go inwards, when you dance and sit in that discomfort, meaningful dialogue does emerge. Pair that with insights, support and guidance from trusted peers, mentors and loved ones, greater clarity is within reach.

Speaking of fear, overcoming the uncomfortable, being brave and courageous, today’s guest is known for her presence in Artistic Cycling.

As of releasing this episode, she’s currently 25 going on 26 years old. She was a competitive athlete in Artistic Cycling between the years 2000-2020 (that’s right, she started when she was about 6 years old) and in 2010 (by the age of 16 onwards) was a member of the German national team.

Her greatest achievements in the sport have been the silver medal in 3 different occasions at the UCI Indoor Cycling World Championships in 2016, 2017 and 2019 as well as winning the European Championship, twice – one in 2012 and the other in 2018.

In February this year, 2020 she retired from the competition side of the sport, to focus on three areas; performing in shows, studying her Masters of Science in Clinical Nutrition at the University of Hohenheim in Germany, and exposing Artistic Cycling through her Instagram platform (where she currently has over 370,000 followers) – you’ve got to take a look at her content yourself, it’s jaw dropping.

Some of the topics we spoke about include:

  • How she’s been able to sustain great interest in such a specific craft
  • Her relationship with fear and her response to fear
  • How her practice, training and risk mitigation looks like
  • The technical, mental, physical and creative aspects of the sport, and plenty more.

So if you’re someone that’s curious about designing a life towards peak performance and performing, then this episode is right up your alley.

A little side-note: something was up with my side of the mic that I only found out after the recording which caused a little bit of subtle static in moments. I apologise in advance for that, as it’s the first time I’ve encountered it and not the quality anyone should be listening to. I’m pretty devastated by this. That said, I learnt something new from the experience; in this case, the application software I was recording on needed to be updated. A small tip there for other podcasters to not make the same mistake I did!

Okay let’s do this. I present to you … the all-smiling, all-cycling, world-class athlete … Viola Brand!

30 Dec 2019Kristina Karlsson, Founder of kikki.K, supporting one hundred and one million people to live their dream life01:15:56

Giants, this is episode #76! Today’s guest is an enormous inspiration. She’s the Founder and Creative Director of kikki.K, the award winning, global Swedish design and stationery business that offers stylish gifts, seasonal collections, stationery (of course) and functional organising tools – all to inspire and empower people to live their best life. Currently, kikki.K has 102 stores, they are stocked in another 250, and sold online in over 147 countries worldwide..

Needless to say the growth of this brand is staggeringly impressive. What makes it so, is how kikki.K all started. Our guest wrote on a piece of paper – all her dreams at 3am one morning when she couldn’t sleep, she was 22 years old. That was the seed. And in this episode we uncover the entire origin story, which is a testament to the power of staying true to our own dreams.

Speaking of, since she emigrated to Australia from Sweden a couple of decades ago, it’s been her ambition to spread the power of dreaming big to the masses. So much so, she has set herself a target to inspire one hundred and one million people to write down three specific dreams, and to go chase after them.

Some of the topics we spoke about include:

  • What factors have influenced her level of scale
  • Her self-care practices, including her 5am “holy hour”
  • What she’s learnt from being coached 1:1 by Robin Sharma.

So if you’re someone who also has big, bold ambitions but don’t know where to start, or perhaps there’s a voice inside you, nudging you that there’s something lacking, then this episode will be right up your alley.

I present to you … the endless dreamer and powerhouse doer … Kristina Karlsson!

31 Dec 2018Q&A on cultivating what's important, starting a podcast, managing anxiety when public speaking and the money conversation00:44:42

Giants welcome to episode #65 — a special, first ever solo Q&A episode with yours truly to end 2018. Questions submitted by you the listeners. I’ve curated the top 8 based on the most similar questions asked, and also the ones I felt would be the most widely useful or applicable.

To help you skip to the answer most relevant to you, as I know many of you are time poor, I’ll list all the questions out below.

The eight questions I’ve answered in order are:

Q1. Any recommendations for working out what is truly important to each of us?

Q2. Would you stay in a smaller job market to keep your relationship, or venture out on your own?

Q3. Any advice for starting one's own podcast?

Q4. What is your go-to breakfast?

Q5. I often get anxious when speaking in public. Do you have any advice for overcoming this?

Q6. The money conversation with clients always scares me. I’m scared if I charge what I really want, they’ll say no and I won’t get their business at all, but if I charge too low that becomes the expected fee moving forward. What can I do to break this cycle?

Q7. With the vast number of interviews you’ve been able to do, have you seen a common thread in responses from interviewees?

Q8. How do you manage pursuing creative or entrepreneurial goals while keeping up with personal commitments?

So they are the 8 questions I’ve attempted to answer. By all means take it with a grain of salt. It’s my two cents and subjective at the end of the day. But I do hope it’s helpful and if you’d like me to do more of these, let me know on Instagram via a DM to my handle: TheGiantThinker

28 Jun 2019Reynold Poernomo, former top 4 MasterChef Australia contestant and Chef on running a creative food empire00:59:01

Today, we have someone super special. He’s been a top 4 contestant on MasterChef Australia’s Season 7 (in 2015 – where at the time he was only 20 years old) and he’s the Co-Founder of multiple family-run restaurants – including KOI Dessert Bar & Dining and Monkey’s Corner. He’s often been referred to as Sydney’s "dessert king" but his abilities span well beyond sweets and into the savoury. He’s been featured multiple times in the Daily Telegraph, The Guardian, Good Food, News.com.au and Vogue Australia. If you’ve ever tried his creations you’ll feel his passion for taking people on a journey through taste, texture and visual theatre.

A part of his story I’m excited for you all to hear is his humble beginnings which isn’t widely known or told. He emigrated from Indonesia to Sydney with his family when he was just 4 years old. The food and restaurant empire actually started in their family garage where his mother started operations with only $300 to support them. Through his story you’ll see why he’s a firm believer in keeping a firm grip of your dreams.

Some of the topics we spoke about include:

  • His top 3 dishes under $30
  • His advice for those looking to audition for MasterChef
  • What makes a successful family-run business
  • Practical business tips he’s learned along the way
  • And his creative process

Giants, welcome to Episode #27, where we chat to the 16 year old Founder and CEO of tech empire Fiftysix Creations; also known as the Lego of the 21st Century.

Coined by some as “the next Steve Jobs”, he was exposed to his first school laptop in Grade 4, and started his first blog and entrepreneurial journey at the age of 11. He’s currently still a full-time high school student who runs his business by waking up at 4am every morning to connect with his team throughout Australia, the US and London.

Some of the things we spoke about include:

  • How he balances his double life as a CEO and Grade 12 student
  • Why it’s important to educate third-world countries about technology
  • How to up-skill with life fundamentals that aren’t taught in school
  • And insights on the jobs of the future

18 May 2016Ted Leonhardt, master negotiator and former Global Chief Creative Officer, FITCH Worldwide on getting what you're worth01:10:32

Welcome to episode #25! The guest joining us is a world-class expert negotiator for creatives and was the former Global Chief Creative Officer for FITCH Worldwide.

In 1985, he was the founder and CEO of the branding agency ‘The Leonhardt Group’, which employed over forty people and annually billed $10 million to clients including Nissan, Nordstrom, Charles Schwab, Electronic Arts, and Microsoft.

He’s also lectured at Seattle’s School of Visual Concepts, is a contributing writer for Fast Company, and now brings decades of experience in helping creatives win negotiations and be in control of their professional survival and creative happiness.

I’m excited for you all to listen to this episode because (truth be told) negotiating pricing and salaries, and asking for what we feel we deserve can be difficult for all creative people – it certainly was for me when I started out. Our guest shows us how we can learn to negotiate with confidence.

In this episode, we cover:

  • 10 negotiation tips; from planning ahead, to getting as much as we can
  • Why we should never do work for free
  • How to instantly handle your emotions on the negotiation table
  • Why we should ask more and talk less
  • What to do with your first offer (and it’s not what you think).

I present to you, the wise, witty and empowering, Ted Leonhardt!!

29 Sep 2016The first 50 pages of ‘How to get a mentor as a designer, guaranteed’ by Ram Castillo for free [AUDIO BOOK VERSION]00:39:47

Welcome to episode #33 – this is a little different to all the other episodes in the past. I've not yet done a solo episode, as I haven’t had a good reason to, until now.

If you're a first time listener, usually I have a conversation with one expert guest and attempt to dissect their story, the lessons they have learnt along the way and the advice they would give to their younger self.

However, it’s time to mix things up, and what better way to do so than to pair the release of my second book; How to get a mentor as a designer, guaranteed, with the first 35 minutes of my audiobook version! which equates to the first 50 pages of the 200 page book.

The entire audio book version goes for about 2 hours 10 minutes and I thought I'd give you a solid amount as a sample here for you to base your thoughts on it incase you were looking to grab a copy.

I also took the liberty of reading it out in my own voice to hopefully add greater authenticity and connection with you. And let me tell you, that was my first time recording an audio book in a professional studio and man do i empathize with voice over artists. It's definitely not as easy as it may seem.

So here we go, I present the first 50 pages of my second book; How to get a mentor as a designer, guaranteed – in audiobook format... enjoy!

Our guest on episode 22 is unlike any other. His CV includes a broad range of accomplishments including working in naval intelligence during the Vietnam War, working as a journalist for the Associated Press, and contributing as a business writer for Time magazine. His most recent and significant contribution to the world of design has been his 20 year tenure as the Executive Director of AIGA (American Institute of Graphic Arts), where he was committed to advancing creative thinking from 1995 through to 2015.

The thing that astounds me is the profoundly unique way that he observes the world we live in. I guarantee that you will view design, and your ability to impact the world, in a whole new dimension. It’s an exciting and deep episode, so I won’t give too much away.

30 Jun 2015Vince Frost on building a thriving business, finding opportunities, life lessons and tea addictions00:49:22
I’ve been tossing and turning over the last few weeks in excitement with this upcoming guest. He’s one of the most established designers in the world and one of the most awarded, including D&AD, Art Directors Club (New York and Tokyo), The Society of Publication Designers New York and AGDA Australia. He’s the founder of a world renowned studio, he’s even an Executive Committee member of D&AD and a member of Alliance Graphique Internationale, Switzerland.  In this episode we cover plenty of explosive content. We talk about what it takes to start a business from getting business coaching to being agile, adaptable and creating systems. We cover idea generation, facilitating client needs, finding opportunities for them and putting clarity in complex situations. We chat about tea addictions, his book recommendation and what his day entails. Now if all that still doesn’t get you excited, here’s a quote from the man himself when I asked what type of person he enjoys working with the most, he said “someone who can move mountains, believe the impossible is possible, someone with an open mind and who is determined to find the ultimate solution”. Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you, the CEO and ECD of Frost Collective, Vince Frost. 25 Aug 2017Oscar Trimboli, specialist coach in deep listening on how to listen beyond the words01:14:18

This is episode #47! Our guest is a specialist coach in deep listening. He's helped many individuals, to massive corporations; from Google to Microsoft to Universal.

The most powerful thing I personally got out of this interview was learning how to uncover meaning in dialogue from what’s said versus what’s unsaid.

Some of the topics we covered include:

  • How to listen deeply using the 5 levels of listening
  • The ideal ‘speaking versus listening’ ratio
  • Shadow listening styles to be aware of
  • And practical techniques to productively move the dialogue forward

This is a must listen for anyone that wants to truly improve the way they communicate, not just professionally (with your colleagues and clients) but personally (with your family, friends and loved ones).

I present to you … the calm, kind and wise ... Oscar Trimboli!
