So, OBVI, Milan was fabulous. Nolan was there ‘werking,’ which means he was styling a client for a massive photo shoot. If you don’t follow him on IG already, get over there and just take a look at his fabulousness! He tells us all about Milan street style (very dressy) and the food (he might mention the food 800 times), and then about some of his favorite Italian fashion brands and the fashion shows. Holly was 80% happy for him, and she meant that. Really!

But because we are your best fashion friends (#BFFF), we are also here to give you the inside track on what to look forward to in this Spring’s style trends. Be sure to jump over to our Pinterest Board to see photos of all of these trends:

1. Lug Sole Boots: Don’t know what that is? Same. These are all the rage and basically the utilitarian combat boot, but a sole that is super thick and chunky. They are for men and women – and Holly and Nolan have a love/hate relationship with them. However, just about anyone can pull of this trend, so try it with a dress or skirt and throw it all over with a moto jacket.
2. The hoodie under a blazer or long coat look is still here. Of course, in Milan, it was spectacularly done. Not so much in the States, but anyway….
3. Y2K is back: we don’t know what that is either, but Holly’s very professional fashion definition is that they are bandana blouses or crisscross tops that cross over you boobs.  ( . ) ( . )  You’ll just have to trust us on this, and go see them on our Pinterest Board.  You’ll also have to trust Holly when she says this is NOT for fashion over fifty. Please, no.

1. Suiting: How does someone pull off a full suit if they are not 6-feet tall and a size zero? Nolan’s answer is - drolly – “very carefully.” (Well thanks for that, because that wasn’t helpful.) Holly pulls it out of him that you need a very tall heel, the pant hem rides on the floor and the jacket is oversized. Probably not for every body. But good on you if you want to give that one a whirl.

HOW IT STARTED:

How was it turning 50? She did it! And she lived through it! And, yes, it was a fabulous, fabulosu day!

But she woke up feeling like, in order to get a handle on her second half, she needed to have some clear well-being goals that were going to give her new thought patterns moving forward. #sowise

Now that she is older and wiser, (right?) she decided that she wanted to shed some of the old self-limiting beliefs and create some new uplifting, self-loving beliefs. 

This year, like many of us, had some major growing pains. So, with a new therapist, and an optimistic outlook, we thought it would be perfect for us to reflect on 10 Things That are Fabulous about Being 50 (or turning 50, or half-way through your 50s, etc.)

HOLLY’S 10 THINGS THAT ARE FABULOUS ABOUT 50

10: You’re wearing the right bra.

At this point in your life, your bra is the right size. There's no more guessing or wondering what your size is, you have the right bra which makes your clothes look better and fall correctly on your body. The bra-fitting experience is not only life changing, but also better for your posture and corrects any back issues that you may have.

9: You get to choose your own friends. Yes, you do.

You now have the guts to remove people in your life that are no longer serving you. Think of this: after the last time someone takes advantage of you, or hurts your feelings, or takes you for granted - you need to be over it. Some people are in your life for a reason, some for a season, some for a lifetime. 

8: You dress according to your body type.   

At this point, you are well aware of which clothes elevate your mood and make you happy. You are body-aware and love to wear clothes that flatter your figure and your shape, which means you have correctly identified your body type. This means you know what cuts and silhouettes look best on you. Which means you only shop according to your body type, you do not shop for color, and you do not shop for price. 

7: You’ve not afraid to say NO.   

Or, at least you are getting better at saying no. Most of us do not want to disappoint people - and we may even bend over backwards to not make people upset. We’d rather rearrange our schedule, just to avoid saying “no.” Is this you? Well, not anymore, Sister. 

6: You continue to elevate your style as you age.

By now, you know your body type and you enjoy shopping because you know what looks best on you. You're also not afraid to try new things that might be a little out of your comfort zone. You are wearing ‘elevated basics’ at home, which means you won’t embarrass yourself if the delivery guy rings your doorbell and he needs a signature. 

5: You have self-care time each week.

If you are a person that doesn't have control of their own schedule, chauffeurs kids in the car all day, is responsible for several people's well-being, and/or taking care of a loved one or sick person – you need self-care time. If you're working over 40 hours a week, or if you're lucky just to eat lunch during the day or have time to pee in between meetings - this one is for you.

And let’s not forget Ralph Lauren’s masterful show in the Hamptons—Holly was particularly impressed by the timeless, American-inspired looks that work across all demos and lifestyles. It was denim, denim and double denim paired with classic nostalgic 1990's colors, styles, and accessories. With what seemed like over 100 looks to choose from, Ralph Lauren had the most incredible, wearable styles that we loved so much.

Fashion Crimes of the Week: Let’s Learn from Them!

Holly couldn’t help but spot a few fashion crimes in the wild this week, but don’t worry—she’s here to guide, not judge!

From rubber flip-flops posing as real shoes- #GIRLNO to outdated denim Capri pants and ill-fitting bras, #JUSTWHY these small missteps are totally fixable! #YAY

Remember, it’s never too late to elevate your style! Opt for polished sandals and chic cropped jeans that hit right at the ankle for a more flattering look.

It is the beginning of the new year. And we have been getting a lot of requests for what to wear for this, what to wear for that? What should I do? What should I get? Should I buy something new? Should I wear something I already have? And unfortunately, the number one question Holly get’s is this:

What To Wear To A Funeral?

This week, your favorite stylist Holly Katz has been watching Golden Girls like it's her job this past week. Like EVERYONE. #DUH

Everyone loves those Girls! Holly loves them, all of her gays love them, Nolan loves them. It's just been a really sad week. We have lost a national treasure.

By the way, the main topic we are covering today is the American funeral. And regardless of religion, this is about what's expected and appropriate at these things. Day, or night. It does not matter. The dress code is the same. 

Did you know that this is honestly one of the most commonly asked subjects on Google?

Because again, a lot of people don't know what to wear.

“Use your best judgment. Does that mean you should wear neon to a funeral? Of course not. You're not supposed to draw attention to yourself, because this event is not about you.

It's about paying respect to the family. You are supposed to blend in, however, you do not have to sacrifice your style, or try to dress like someone that you're not.” – Holly Katz, personal stylist

FASHION FACT: The dress code for a funeral is business casual. 

We will say that again: The dress code for a funeral is BUSINESS CASUAL, even since before COVID-19. Holly has been yelling about this for years.

What is business casual, you might ask?  Let us break it down for you into two simple terms. Wear this. Not that.

For context, we are going to give you a few examples: 

• Wear This: Slacks that are non-denim. Not That: Leggings. 
• Wear This: A dress. Not That: A very short skirt that's mid-thigh.
• Wear This: A collared shirt. Not That:  A freaking sports jersey, Mkay? 

It's pretty simple. What you would wear to an office for business casual means you're dressed. If you want to, you can wear a jacket, a skirt, a tie perhaps, or wear heels. 

Business Casual Dress Code

Wear This:

• Natural Makeup
• Tights or Stockings
• Dress Shoes
• Dress Belt
• Dress Socks
• Sports Coats
• Dress Coat
• Minimal Patterns

Don’t Wear This:

• Stained or ripped clothing
• Clothing that is too tight
• No undershirt
• Ill-fitting undergarments
• Too much jewelry
• Heels over 4-inches high
• Excessive perfume or cologne

So, put it on your bulletin board, put it on your bathroom mirror, and God knows if you know somebody who needs this list, feel free to pass it on. #youarewelcome

Business casual means you do not wear slouchy, sloppy clothing that you would wear on a regular day just kickin' around.

You should wear tailored, structured clothing that looks presentable in a business environment. 

FREE STYLIST TIP:

If somebody dies tomorrow, you have to have something to wear. Most women usually say, “Oh, this is my funeral dress,” which is fine. It just doesn't have to be the only option that you have to wear. And honestly, your “funeral dress” should be something you can wear not just to funerals, but to other events, too.

You should have something in your wardrobe that functions for many things, and not just have one thing set aside for a funeral. (Hopefully, you don't go to that many funerals!)

WHAT ABOUT COLORS?

First off, we want to talk about the color black.  The old rules about color are dead. Having certain colors that complement your skin tone are always good to know. But again, this doesn't mean you can't wear whatever color you want to. 

If you have very fair skin does that mean you can't wear pink? No. If you have really bright fire orange, red hair, and freckles, does that mean you can't wear orange or red? Of course not. 

It's ridiculous. But in the 80s image consultants use to “do your colors,” where you would be defined as warm or cool and they would show you what colors look best on you, which is actually helpful. However, in Holly’s opinion, it's subjective, there is no color that one certain person cannot wear. But you should use your best judgment.

Some funerals are actually called a "celebration of life," which is a really nice twist on making people appreciate the life that someone has lived, and not wallow in sorrow that they are now gone. It usually means the dress code is the same: you should try to look your best.

Read the room: It's a funeral.  Find a way to be respectful, not stand out and stick with business casual.

Of course, there is always the traditional black dress, which is on the Pinterest board, too. But there are lots of other options as well: 

• Pantsuits
• Skirts
• Trousers
• Blouses
• Sweaters
• Jackets

If you decide that you don't want to wear black, Holly has lots of other really great outfits that you can put together to go to a funeral. And then you can rotate them throughout your wardrobe. 

HOW TO DRESS YOUR KIDS FOR A FUNERAL:

Want to know a real fashion crime? Kids who have not dressed appropriately at events, such as a funeral. 

Get your kids on board with the dress code.

Holly actually researched this on a couple of different funeral home websites – and they have it right there in black and white:  Get children and teenagers on board with the dress code!

No sports jerseys, no logos, no shorts, or no stupid crap teenagers like to wear. #sorrynotsorry 

We understand you have to pick your battles, obviously. But this is one that they should follow by your gleaming example. In short, if you're not dressed appropriately, they will not be either.

TO ACCESSORIZE OR NOT TO ACCESSORIZE?

Don't trip on the details of wearing too much or too little jewelry and trying to coordinate matching stuff. Period.  

When you pick out an outfit, do not get hung up on what earrings match your necklace. At this age (the Golden 50s), you should have regular jewelry, whether it's real or not, that goes with everything.

Your outfit should flow and be easy to look at. You should start with a blank canvas and work around it. It’s just like baking or making a recipe. You have to have the right ingredients to get the final product to come out correctly the way it should. 

Number One: you should have the right undergarments. This is the first step in building a great outfit.

Number Two: Do you want to wear pants? A dress? Or a skirt? Say for example, if you decide that you want to wear a pantsuit, which is perfectly acceptable and business casual to wear to a funeral. Picking a blouse that will complement the jacket that you're wearing is easy. You can wear a solid or you can wear a pattern. You can even wear a sweater underneath your blazer - that's a great look too. 

If you want to wear a belt, that would count as an accessory. All you need to do now is pick some jewelry, a shoe, and a bag. That's a complete outfit. 

Say, for example, you wanted to wear a scarf instead of a necklace. That's another way to accessorize! You can also tie a scarf to the handle of your handbag. That too counts as an accessory. 

Just know you don't have to worry about being matchy-matchy. Your earrings don't have to match your necklace, they don't have to match your bracelet, and they don't have to match your ring. Do not get caught up in those details. 

Costume jewelry should be elevated and mixed with real. Statement earrings, a chunky necklace, or layered necklaces are great ways to mix and match.

WHAT ABOUT SHOES?

You already know that less is more, and that is definitely the case with shoes. A lot of people cannot wear heels - which is completely fine! You can wear a wedge or wear a low block heel. These provide more support than a stiletto, and FYI: No one should be wearing sneakers. No one, no one, no one. 

If you prefer not to wear heels, then you need to get some really nice gorgeous upscale designer flats - which every company in the world makes. Fabulous examples on the Pinterest board. 

A neutral color is always easiest, but an animal print, like a snake print or a cheetah print is considered a neutral as well. If you're not there yet, try a metallic shoe like a silver or bronze. It's a great way to elevate a solid color suit, and in the words of Stacy London: 

“All metallics are neutrals. So it is absolutely fine to mix gold and silver; you just want it to look like it has purpose.” — Stacy London, stylist

HOW TO NOT LOOK LIKE SHIT:

Do not make these mistakes: 

• Try your clothes on before your event. Make sure your old stand-by outfit doesn’t have a stain on it. Make sure your clothes still fit! Maybe you have a suit, but the pants don’t fit anymore. That is ok, you can still wear the jacket!
• Have the correct undergarments. If you haven't been fitted for a bra lately, then please, by the love of God, do that.
• And, if you haven't gotten a new pair of shoes lately that are nice enough to wear to a funeral, then go out and get some new shoes.

If you have no idea what you're doing, or what you're wearing, when it comes to being a guest at a funeral, it's okay. It's not a big deal. 

The first step is awareness. It doesn't matter that you don't know.  If you don't know -  find out! Just ask  - and let's get you dressed right.

OMG: Our “Very Best Gay of the Podcast,” Mr. Nolan Meader, is BACK this week! 

Since it’s summer and everyone is sending us “Out of Office” replies (RUDE!), Holly and Nolan decided to shoot the shit about what they have been up to lately, what fashion adventures they will be having next – and for the first time ever – a list of Holly and Nolan’s Personal Fashion Crimes!!

Yes, it can happen to even the best of us. 

As Nolan loves to say: “Style is a journey. We are constantly evolving our style and tastes, and that is OK. However, it is still fun to make fun the of dumb stuff we do sometimes.”

This week’s episode starts with a recap of Nolan’s fabulous fashion life. He is a busy working gal about town (NYC), styling people near and far (Milan), managing fashion events, eating desserts… you know, important stuff!

Of course, along the way, they do get a bit side-tracked here (look, a squirrel!) with a story about a trip to one of Nolan’s favorite designer showrooms: Markarian. 

This designer combines timeless design with modern grace, and her clothes are TO.DIE.FOR. They are very dressy designs, and once Holly was in the door, it was game-over shopping!

Other fun events of recent weeks include celebrating up-and-coming designers at the NYC Fashion Group International (FGI) annual “Rising Stars” event. One of our Podcast Besties and past guests, Julie Lamb, was awarded the Rising Star Award for Jewelry Design.

This daytime event, and dinner afterward with Fashion super stars like Global Fashion Ambassador Ken Downing and more, was a spectacular celebration with the true fashion insiders of NYC! 

Finally, Holly and Nolan finally move on to their own Personal Fashion Crimes of late, poking a lot of fun at themselves. What are Fairy Gay Mothers for anyway?? Amiright??

In the words of the legendary Joan Rivers: “When you can laugh at yourself no one can ever make a fool of you.”

Nolan’s Top Personal Fashion Crimes:

1. A bronze/rust colored silk trench coat with crystal trim embellishments.
2. Drinking 8 glasses of cognac when you don’t drink cognac and have an 8:00 a.m. styling appointment the next day. Shopping drunk resulted in a very expensive purchase. As a reminder for fans of the podcast, Nolan has a “Coat Problem.” (Not a Coke Problem!)

“The moral of the story is: do not irresponsibly spend money while you're still drunk from the night before unnecessarily on a distressed leather trench coat, because how many times am I really going to wear that?” – Nolan Meader, Coat Addict

1. Splitting the crotch out of some very expensive pants at a fashion show, and having to continue on to other events afterward, literally with his ass hanging out.
2. Buying something that everyone has - and that you think you must have - but it looks like shit on you. His crime was a Marine Serre Half-Moon turtleneck.
3. Holly also tried multiple times to call Nolan out on his favorite green sequin turtleneck which might or might not make him look like Aquaman, but he would not have it. At all. 
4. Constantly buying new dress shoes when he only wears his one favorite pair. Don’t buy shit you will never wear, or do not need… Like his “Eiffel Tower” rhinestone black blazer, maybe!?

Holly’s Personal Fashion Crimes:

1. Wearing an amazing sequin trench coat combined with too many other statement pieces: she wore it with a patterned dress from Japan, printed Gucci boots AND a fringe leather piece all at the same time. TOO MUCH.
2. A hot pink and black bandage dress (a style from the 80s) with a cut out detail reimagined by Proenza Schouler. Damn- hate to see this go. Nolan insists it will be sold on The RealReal asap. 
3. Gucci Horsebit Clogs. Nolan says: “You look like a Mennonite working on a farm.” No.
4. Her ostrich feather BCBG eggplant purple vest. We can’t even find an example of that one. Nolan said it was too chicken-esque.
5. Her honeymoon travel outfit: a bright pink Lilly Pulitzer suit with gold lame trim. It had so much gold thread that she couldn’t even get through the metal detector at the airport. (TBH: Nolan was only in the 7th grade at the time, and Holly didn’t have a stylist yet.)

Lessons learned today? Everyone has their own style. What we wear in fashion. A fashion crime occurs when your individual style has a trainwreck with fashion. 

(We know that feels like a math equation. Try to keep up.)

When you are deciding what to wear, choosing the correct undergarments can make or break how you feel about yourself in your clothes. That's what your clothes should be doing for you: serving you and making you look your best.

Because when you look your best, you feel your best. #trademark!

Backstory:

When Holly is working with clients to help solve their closet chaos, her rule #1 is:

“The older and out of date your undergarments are, the more unsexy and unflattering you feel.”

So, to rectify this problem, you need to take inventory every year or so, and clean out your underwear drawer.  You know which underwear and bras make you feel the best. So, keep those (as long as they are in good condition) - and get rid of the rest.

THE TOP UNDERGARMENTS YOU NEED TO OWN:

1. Seamless Underwear

2. Correct-Fitting Bras

3. Boob Tape, Nipple Covers and Backless Bras

4. Shapewear Bottoms

5. Shapewear Tops

THE WEAR AND CARE OF YOUR UNDERGARMENTS:

• Underwear, of course, you wash after every wearing (which means you replace more often, too). 

• Bras can be worn many days in a row before washing is necessary – because you don’t work out in your regular bras. (Sports bras, you wash). 

• Shapewear can be worn more than once, as well, as long as the support stays strong.

The key to laundry care is to not be overly aggressive in your washing machine cycles or with detergents. AND, you never put undergarments in the dryer. Heat breaks down the stretchy fibers you need for support. Also, do not hang your bras to dry by the straps (again, all the stretch is there). Just lie flat to dry.

HOW MUCH TO SPEND ON UNDERGARMENTS:

Holly has a tried-and-true formula: CPW which is the  ‘Cost Per Wear’ that she swears by. If you are going to wear an item 100 times, is $100 too much to spend? You do the math that makes the most sense to you, but that is not expensive when you consider the CPW.

The adage of ‘you get what you pay for’ really makes sense when you spend money on workhorse items like supportive undergarments. 

HAVE YOUR ARSENAL READY!

Take the time to get professionally fitted for bras of all sorts, try on shapewear items and purchase the ones that solve your support issues best, and try boob tape and nipples covers to see what works best for you. #likedoitnow

Then, when you have an occasion or a new outfit, you will be ready to go with the strong foundations you need to look and feel your best. You won't be scrambling at the last minute. This is key to having a succeful wardrobe.

Wardrobe maintenance and clothing care might not be the most exciting topic out there (THAT would be shoe shopping, just FYI…), but nevertheless, we are sure no one needs Holly to point out that there’s not much point in buying nice clothes if you’re not going to look after them, are we right? 

(*She is going to point it out anyway. You’re welcome.)

As with any investment, taking the time to properly care for your wardrobe will ensure its value. Beautiful clothes are worth the extra time and care needed to keep them preserved. 

So, this week, we are sharing some TRUTH BOMBS and handy tips to help you on your way to crafting a well-maintained wardrobe.

Anywho…  

Here is the goal: Everything in your closet should be:

1. stuff you like

2. stuff that fits you well, AND

3. you know where it is 

There are a few different buckets when taking care of your clothes:

No. 1:   Organization

No. 2:  Care and Cleaning

No. 3:  Maintenance and Repair

NUMBER ONE: Organization

So, let's start with #1- organization. How you store your clothes is part of taking care of your wardrobe. Clothes are energy. How they present themselves to you is very, very important. 

So, here's the deal; if you have a shitshow going on in your closet when you open your door, and you don't know where anything is, this isn't taking proper care of your clothes. It will also make you crazy. 

No one wants to shuffle through stuff until you find something that's clean or trying on a bunch of shit because you have 12 different sizes to go through. It's not a great start to your day. That is ridiculous. 

PS: This is where we rant and rave about the value of a professional closet clean-out. Also available in Episode 60. If you need help with what to wear and cleaning out your closet: hire a professional personal stylist. If you need help organizing your kitchen, do not. Hire a professional organizer.

KEY POINTS:

Hangers: 

Get yourself some non-slip, slimline velvet-covered hangers. Remember Mommie Dearest? Not kidding.

If you have shitty-ass plastic tube hangers, plastic hangers from Target, or wire hangers - or if you're lazy and you leave your stuff in the dry-cleaning poly bags until you wear it – you need to need to stop it right now. All your hangers must be changed to the velvet slimline hangers.

We know exactly what you're thinking, and why you're cussing Holly out right now: What is so wrong with putting the dry cleaning up in the polybag on the wire hanger? 

Number 1, it looks terrible. 

Number 2, you need to welcome the item back and put it on its appropriate hanger where it lives in your closet. 

You will also avoid like hanger and shoulder bumps, and it will get it back in its proper place so you can find it again.

Drawers:

If you go through your drawers to get rid of old stuff or the things that you've worn to death, you're going to feel a lot better. If you know what's in your drawers and they aren't over stuffed, this is really going to help you tremendously. 

Shoes:

Let go of any shoes that are worn to death, or are old or dogged out. Only keep the shoes that you are actively currently wearing. If you haven't worn them in three years, they gotta go.

Another thing: Keep your shoes organized in your closet so you can see what you have, so you can find them, and so that you don’t impulse buy new shoes you do not need. 

You probably have a pair of rain boots. So no, Boo, you do not need the ones you found on sale with pink duckies. YOU HAVE A PAIR ALREADY. #preach

Final shoe tip: Find yourself a shoe repair guy. Call him a cobbler if you are fancy. But just like clothing, you can repair shoes (and handbags, fyi) and extend the life of the things you love the most. If you take care of your investments, you can enjoy them again and again. 

NUMBER TWO: Cleaning Your Clothes

This is simple. You either wash your clothes or you have them dry-cleaned. 

When you wash your clothes, you need to do it properly, and then fold and promptly return them to their spots. Over-washing and not reading the care labels can lead to problems and issues. If you want the longest life out of your clothes, and you need to read the care labels.

Do you have a dry cleaner? If yes, are you going weekly? Are you going biweekly, or are you stubborn and you don't go at all? Some people over dry clean to avoid laundry. They just send everything to the dry cleaners. That's a BIG NO-NO. And some just don't go to the cleaners ever, which is not good either. Don’t be either one extreme or the other.

Washing vs. Dry Cleaning:

Cotton, cotton-poly blends, jeans, workout clothes, unders, socks, pajamas and your kids’ stuff should be washed at home as needed. Anything outside of these categories - slacks, dressy dresses, blouses, button-down shirts, jackets, blazers - all these things need to go to the dry cleaner.

Regardless of your method, just know that pressing your clothing is important. Get Holly’s favorite steamer, or use the iron in your hotel room. Just don’t be wrinkled. Ever.

How often you wash your clothes, the type of laundry products you use, how you dry them – these all add up in the condition and longevity of your items. Knowing how to treat your laundry can be your superpower!

NUMBER THREE: Alterations and Repair

Holly is on her soap box again, so please get the memo this time, because we can’t say it enough. If your clothes fit you perfectly, you will always feel better and look better. Find yourself a place for alterations and clothing repair so that everything fits you well – no matter what body stage you are in.

Did you pop a button? Keep it! Does your favorite dressy winter jacket need repairs or buttons before the cold weather hits, or before you go on a trip. Get yourself organized here. 

You can find talented alteration people at your dry cleaner, local tailors shops, or at department stores like Nordstrom’s. 

To conclude:

Take pride of ownership in your clothes. It really makes a difference on how you feel about yourself and your clothing. And that really is the point is it not? 

You're supposed to feel fabulous in what you're wearing. Why would you wear something that you don't feel good in or that doesn't fit properly? Give your clothes the long life they deserve by taking care of them. 

And you know what? Dammit, they're gonna take care of you.

Pay attention people, because Celebrity Stylist TV Personality, Influencer, Podcaster, Blogger, Mother ALI LEVINE is here with us! Major BFD alert! 

Ali is a VIP stylist from the West Coast and is now a new transplant to Tennessee. Before that, she was raised in the high-velocity fashion culture of New York.

She is a celebrity stylist, a motherhood fashion lifestyle expert, and so much more! Ali has styled for many different magazines and has had a million celebrity opportunities working with all sorts of high-profile people. She has worked in television, film and music, and has been called LA's "It" Girl as far as celebrity styling is concerned. She's got a star-studded portfolio: working with Jesse McCartney, Holly Robinson Pete, Joey King, Gretchen Rossi, Lisa Vanderpump, and so many more.

Ali is the REAL DEAL!!! We talk about her start in the fashion industry and ultimately conquering the world of styling. From New York to LA and back again, she has seen it all. And then, in the middle of it, she also had TWO adorable babies.

Holly and Ali chat about their shared styling history with the School of Style, their mentors Luke Storey and Lauren Messiah, and how FREAKING HARD starting out in a new industry can be. You gotta put in the work, you gotta do the grunt work. Fashion and styling jobs are not glamorous! When you see that picture-perfect outfit on the red carpet, just know that moment is only 1% of work. Ali says that styling is “90% Grime and 10% Glam.” Holly says, “PREACH, Queen!!!”

Ali is passionate about styling and the confidence gained from looking your best. This was never more apparent to her than during and after her two pregnancies.  Changing body parts, postpartum depression, spitting babies and the havoc of hormones had her beating herself up and expecting too much to soon. Society expects women to ‘bounce back!’ when you can never go back, because you started a whole new chapter!

Holly delves in with some burning questions, like:

• To keep or not to keep your maternity clothes? And/or your pre-baby jeans?
• What are some mistakes that people can make after pregnancy? As far as fashion and style are concerned?

Both Holly and Ali agree that there ain’t nobody who needs any kind of negative energy, so give yourself a freaking break!!! If it's just going to sit and collect dust, it's not going to serve you in the near future. Let it go! Because, if anything, that energy will just hold you back. It's making you think of something that maybe doesn't exist anymore, and maybe it never will again. And there's no reason to hold on to it.

[2:09] HOLLY: So Ali and I have so much in common. We both did some of the same styling courses. Ali, tell us about that.

[2:48] ALI: I'm originally from New York, I moved to Los Angeles for over a decade and then recently moved to Tennessee. And when I first moved to California, I was working in costume and costume design. Long story short, I had worked in New York, after doing corporate fashion and retail and product development and design, all these different you know, projects. I ended up then falling in love with the entertainment industry side and working in costume.

[2:58] ALI: I went to Los Angeles, started working in the movie and entertainment industry, and got into the union and really realized that, for me, it was not fueling my passion, even though I was becoming very successful very quickly. I wasn't necessarily feeling the feeling of the passion in my soul of what I had started feeling when I first worked in fashion. And so that's what then led me to start to figure out well, what else could I be doing now that I've made this move?

[5:40] ALI: I got to take a business class (at the School of Style), and that was really the start to my styling career. I really learned the business side of styling and what that looks like. And I started working with Luke (Storey), but as we're getting all these amazing opportunities and mentors, you know, mentors from him and others, working with tons of other stylists as an intern again, of course not getting paid, but just getting the experience getting paid experience.

[6:40] HOLLY: That is a great story. So Luke Storey and Lauren Messiah were co owners of the School of Style. I was a graduate in 2015. And I actually still work with Lauren today. She is an executive coach for me and a group of other people. I have taken every single class that they have offered. And I love the program. And I fell in love with them because they were really real.

[7:30] ALI: The classes want you to understand the realness of it, the dirt, the grime. And it's not the glam thing, but it's 90% you know, grind and 10% glam. And I think that was really important for me to learn at it, you know, really early.

[10:00] HOLLY:  What are some mistakes that people can make after pregnancy? As far as fashion and style are concerned?

[12:00] ALI: When I first became a mom, first off, I had in my mind that I was going to go through this massive bounce back. So, I was playing around Hollywood all the time, right? Red carpets and around celebrities. And I'm like, Oh, I'm just gonna bounce back, you know, push the baby out, go to bed later and just bounce back just like the rest of them! And it's like, yeah, okay, for most people, that's not the case.

[13:30] ALI: I used to just stand there and just beat myself up. And I know so many women do it. It's so it's so easy to do. Because you look at yourself, and you feel like, Wow!  I just I lost the woman I was, or, I’m no longer pretty, no longer sexy. What's going on with me?

[16:30] ALI: I really think I made it worse for myself, because I told myself I was going to fit into those jeans again. So I'm going to leave them there. I'm going to definitely wear that shirt again, I just may not wear it for another few months. For me it was just like this dead energy, just stagnant sitting in my closet that was creating a negative vibes, just sitting there because nothing's happening to it.

[21:17] HOLLY: And the postpartum just doesn't magically go away. I mean, you don't  wake up one day and be like, I'm totally fine! Take small bites. Maybe you find a sweater you really like, and you wear that for a week.  If you love it and you feel good in it. Great!

[26:00] ALI: Like, it's been a busy day. And I am grateful to be so busy, don't get me wrong, but like today is a heavy day. So guess what, tomorrow, this weekend, I will honor myself and I will give myself some rest and I will do some pampering.

[29:00] HOLLY: It is a big deal because you're constantly putting yourself on the back burner. Because it's too hard. You've got young kids. You take five minutes, you take five hours, I don't care, but you've got to make yourself a priority. Whatever your jam is, do your makeup do your hair, you don't do everything, but you can do one thing for yourself.

[33:00] HOLLY: How long do you keep your maternity clothes? Do you feel like keeping them holds you back?

[34:30] ALI: Whether it's pregnancy, postpartum, a new job, getting married, whatever it is, whatever life change, we all go through changes, hopefully. If you're not, in my opinion, if you're not changing and evolving, you're dying. So, if you're evolving, and you're shifting, and you're going through these things, you're going to have those moments where things just aren't going to resonate anymore. So donate, sell or trade what doesn’t work anymore.

• Try a new eye mask at night, or put on your mascara, just a little self-care to boost your confidence.
• And Holly’s fav? Find yourself some really, really, REALLY nice pajamas. They can be incredibly indulgent!

Find those hero pieces and build a little capsule collection that's yours just to go to for that time that you need to. It’s important because then your confidence comes back, and you start to realize, like, okay, you CAN get dressed!

Hear ye! Hear ye! The event of all events: The Met Gala was here, and we need to take a step back and celebrate fashion’s biggest night! Get our latest episode now!

Never heard of the Met Gala? Ever been to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City? Doesn’t matter. 

All you need to know is that this is THE celebrity event of the year featuring the most outrageous costumes and looks curated by top designers, which raises money for the The Met’s Costume Institute each year.

No matter your movie career, income bracket, or societal stature, it’s the coolest of the cool kids that get to go. 

As exclusive as it is political, to be invited is somewhat equal to being invited to a ball hosted by royalty. You just don’t say no. You show up, with bells on. Literally.  

The theme this year was centered around the “Gilded Age” in American Fashion, focusing on New York’s elite in the last decades of the 19th Century, around 1870 to 1900

Think white ties, large hair with hats to match, opera gloves dresses to the floor, and very tightly nipped corsets galore.

So, join Holly and Nolan this week to see who understood the assignment, and who forgot their homework. They have graded the papers, and the results are in: 

A+ Awards:

Blake Lively and husband Ryan Reynolds were the co-chairs of this year’s Gala. 

As such, Blake pulled off an epic dress reveal for her arrival on the Met steps, where gala assistants untied the bow of her shimmery rose gold strapless gown by Atelier Versace to reveal a bright blue-green train underneath. 

Her rose gold opera gloves also changed to blue-green, with her colors paying homage to New York City architecture, her crown paying homage to the Statue of Liberty, and the golden dress design symbolizing the Empire State Building. 

We. Are. Not. Worthy.

Anna Wintour, the Queen of All Fashion, wore a colorful ensemble Chanel which featured a feather-embellished cape, and a long matching skirt that flowed down to the ground.

Of course, her outfit was gorgeous, and she even swapped out her classic sunglasses for a TIARA– which she owns! But Nolan is just bored with her same dress profile year after year. 

Sarah Jessica Parker, as always, was our star student with extra credit and the teacher’s pet. Her dramatic Christopher John Rodgers ball gown and exaggerated hat proved she understood the assignment again this year. 

Probably Nolan’s favorite of the night was Bee Carrozzini Shaffer (Anna Wintour’s daughter) in in a dramatic, lacy black Alexander McQueen gown. Elegant with a capital E!

And Kaia Gerber in Alexander McQueen. She was straight out of a fairy tale.

Holly has just become the president of the Winnie Harlow Fan Club. Winnie looked like an absolute angel. Like from heaven. She wore a whimsical white tulle creation by Iris Van Herpen with an amazing headpiece. No one does the Met Gala like Iris van Herpen. No. One.

Michelle Yeoh: The epitome of GORGEOUS, and totally age appropriate, she wore a green upcycled silk-faille gown by Prabal Gurung. The piece featured a sharply draped bodice with an off-the-shoulder silhouette, complete with a sweeping skirt with a fluted hem. The elegant ensemble was finished with a dramatic matching cape. Amplifying the glamour of Yeoh’s outfit was a show-stopping diamond and pearl Tasaki statement necklace — also designed by Gurung.

Alicia Keys in Ralph Lauren. She looked BEYOND in a NYC skyline cape and gown. TO DIE FOR.

Another love: Lizzo (and her flute!) in Thom Brown. That Coat!  Nolan wants to wear it to Whole Foods. He wants to wear it to the bodega. He wants to wear it everywhere. It took 32,000 man hours to make that coat, and we are here to celebrate it!

Awkwafina arrived in a custom Gucci salmon pink and multicolor tulle puff sleeve dress. Holly says she has never looked better!

Cardi B. “Goes for the Gold” in Versace– and was very well dressed. Holly loves, not Nolan’s thing. The gown was wrapped in Versace gold chains and coins.

La La Anthony in an off-the-shoulder burgundy gown: What was the symbolism with her outfit? 

Holly didn’t like it, Nolan said they may be more to the backstory, but these two just could not agree.

And speaking of not agreeing, our hosts spend WAY too much time discussing Kacey Musgraves’ floor-length Prada gown that featured jeweled embellishments and a low-cut bodice that was adorned with a bow. Musgraves completed her look with black satin gloves, an ostrich fan and plenty of jewels, including a stunning diamond necklace. Holly LOVED!! 

Who forgot to do to the homework?

Billie Eilish opted for a pale green and cream Gucci corset gown, crystal-adorned black choker, and a messy-chic updo. Nolan thinks the color is terrible. And thinks it looks too prostitute-y. 

That being said, he thinks it is the best she has looked in a long time. She seemed confident what she was wearing. He liked that she was wearing something with a lot of shape and structure and still felt confident and it made him happy for her because he hopes that now she'll be a little bit more confident in herself.

What did Holly think? “She looked like she was a madam and an 1800s whorehouse.” 

Allllrighty then!

Kylie Jenner made Nolan want to run into oncoming traffic. It was just so bad, in so many ways. “It looks like a sad mix between the bride with no budget and bad taste. A 1950s nurse.” 

Just no.

Except, it was so bad, it was good! It was so bad that it has it has sparked a million memes. They are hysterical and all over Instagram and that makes up for how bad that outfit was. It was insulting.

NOTE: If you want to honor the late Virgil Abloh of OFF WHITE, you wear one of his great dresses. Not that trainwreck. Period. 

Camila Cabello in Atelier Prabal Gurung. Nolan says no to the dress. Holly says it looked like a confetti cake with skittles inside.

Emma Stone wearing a white knee-length flapper-style dress by Louis Vuitton. Did she draw the Louis Vuitton short straw? 

Anderson.Paak –  no bowl haircuts, please. Ever. 

Emma Corrin from the Crown in a Miu Miu oversized jacket and shorts with a top hat. 

Not elegant.

Kourtney Kardashian in Thom Browne. She had no clue what the theme was and said so on national TV. RUDE. And the outfit she wore was completely wrong for her body type. Major FASHION CRIME!!

And - what about the trend to have influencers invited to this prestigious event?  Is it ok, or no?  Nolan simply says: “Go Home.”

Nolan had an interesting take on Shawn Mendes, that may or may not have anything to do with the Gilded Age or Met Gala, but he muses:  How long are we pretending Shawn Mendes is straight? We mean…. Really. 

And OMG: Glenn Close in pink Valentino! We mean PINK! Wow, she killed it, AND got the assignment.

So, in honor of this day, we would like to share Holly’s “Sustainable Fashion for Dummies” episode with everyone to help explain what ‘sustainable fashion’ is, and how everyone can easily play a big part in saving the planet in small ways. #yourewelcome

Every day, in our opinion, should be Earth Day. We should be reveling in the beauty that all the Earth gives to us. We should be appreciative and treat it with kindness, and not use and abuse our resources. 

Responsible sustainability in the fashion industry has been a gigantic, gargantuan topic for the past 20-30 years.

While researching the topic for this week’s episode, we found zillions of charts and graphs, explaining how much money each country in the world actually spends on clothes, especially fast fashion, every single year. And how much of it gets trashed. 

The amount of this just in the United States alone will make you cry. Nobody can imagine what “92 million tons of waste” in a landfill actually looks like.

Not only do unwanted clothes end up in landfills, but the emissions to produce these items pollute our air and natural water systems. And the faster the garments are produced, the more damage it causes to the environment.

Fashion Crime #1 = Fast Fashion

For anyone who doesn't know what “Fast Fashion” is, it's literally a 15-20 day turnaround from concept to production. And just as fast as the consumer buys it, it either falls apart and is thrown away, or the trend has already changed. 

Add to that the transportation cost to quickly deliver what consumers buy each day – and the carbon footprint is now bigger than one of Shaq’s tennis shoes.

Fun Fashion Fact: 

The normal fashion fabrication cycle is 4-6 months.  That is from design to production to delivery. That takes time and money, but you end up with quality. Not quantity. 

Understanding what a sustainable product is, especially in the fashion industry, is a real game-changer for how consumers can buy, what they want to buy, and what they actually think they need. 

Consumer behavior can actually dictate how the planet will be affected, how it will work for future generations, and how much damage will be done. The more we buy, the more damage we cause.  

Today, suppliers cannot keep up with demand. There is high demand for clothing and luxury goods due to celebrity culture and “the more stuff” culture. We are all guilty of it.

But what we CAN do is change our type of consumption: Quality over quantity goes a long way. 

The facts and the numbers are not only shocking, but it's alarming. What are we thinking when fashion companies brag about numbers like “114 billion garments sold last year” and “$500 billion worth of clothing waste and fabric” in landfills?

And please don’t fall for the standard BS with claims from stores like ASOS, H&M, Shein, Boohoo, and Zara, who are guilty of “greenwashing,” which is saying they carry “some” sustainable items (and market them) to offset the rest of their line, and not practicing sustainable practices the rest of the time.

So, what can fashion-conscious people do to make a difference? The answer is to buy smarter: it's called “circular fashion.” 

What is “Circular Fashion?”

This term is defined as clothes, shoes, or accessories that are designed, sourced, produced, and provided with the intention of being used and circulated responsibly and effectively in society for as long as possible in their most valuable form, and then return safely to the biosphere when no longer of human use.

What does that mean in English? Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Repair. #PREACH

Reduce: 

1. Purchase only what you need. Buy what you like, but buy what you need. Once you have what you need, you won’t “want” so much.
2. Shop Small:  whether it’s a hometown business owner, or something handmade on Etsy, shop from small producers and creators. You will find more original items, more creative and interesting things, and will be supporting small industries that have less impact on the planet. 

Reuse:

1. Clean out your closet. Regularly.
2. Donate, donate, donate. Not to give stuff to your neighbor, or to your daughter who lives in the same house. Give to organizations that help others by giving them gently-used items that they desperately need: socks, coats, shoes, bed linens, towels, blankets, eyeglasses, hats, and sunglasses. Imagine if you did not have those items. Those are the things people in need, need.

Recycle:

1. Shop on Poshmark, Tradesy, The RealReal, and Re/Done, or shop locally at consignment and vintage stores. Second-use items of high quality have value, are highly sought after, and are generally seen in the fashion world as being on-trend.

Repair:

1. Whatever happened to repairing quality items instead of throwing them away? Shoes can be re-soled, buttons can be replaced, or even upgraded! Handbags can be reconditioned. We have simply lost the art of fixing, sewing, and repairing because “new stuff” is so much easier to get. 

“Donate it to a charity that can use the items of the past person's life to better someone else's life.”

Where to find sustainable fashion  - and is it even fashionable? 

Do not confuse good design, constructed with quality and sustainable materials, with lower quality fashion. In fact, to achieve this balance is a high form of art (in our humble opinion).

It’s shocking. We know. But WE ARE THE BEST FASHION FRIEND YOU NEVER KNEW YOU NEEDED, remember? And we mean it. You are our Fashion Besties, and we are here to help.

This week, Holly does some shout-outs to listeners who have shared their own fashion concerns – which also just happen to be the type of questions many women “of a certain age” might have.

Question from Christine: 

How to shop for clothes when vertically-challenged (aka, short)?

Answers from Holly:

If you are 5’ 3” tall or less, you are in the Petite category of sizing. This should not come as a surprise to you. You have always needed to make clothes work for you. So, no newsflash there. 

The only rule you need to know is this: Buy only for fit. Not for fad. And certainly not on the wish that you were taller. Not. Happening. 

What IS happening is called alterations. Go to your local dry cleaner and make a new BFF with the tailor at your cleaners. Hemming a dress, skirt or pants is not rocket science! If your clothes fit you perfectly, it does not matter how tall you are. Or are not. 

This may mean one extra step when purchasing something new to wear, but you can do it. And it is worth the minimal cost and time it takes.

From Lisa: 

What are the rules for mixing prints, and can I really do it? 

Answers from Holly:

First, some key points. It takes a lot of confidence to pull off this look. It is advised that this style may be for seasoned and experienced shoppers!

Next: but anyone can do it. 

Holly suggests concocting a highly curated mix for this look. Stay in the same color family, to start. If you are trying this look for the first time, do this:

1. Start with nice jeans as your foundation.

2. Pick a nice jacket or blazer with a pattern.

3. Layer a printed shirt in the same color family - and maybe with a smaller pattern - under the jacket. 

From afar, you will look well-dressed in a jacket and pants. But closer up, the ‘Wow Factor’ pops out from under the jacket. 

LESS IS MORE, PEOPLE!!! 

Do not try this look for the first time with flower-patterned pants and a polka-dot top. Most humans cannot pull this look off - and shouldn’t try.

You CAN try a patterned bag or shoe, or other accessories with prints and patterns, as less risky alternatives. 

From Sticky Bakery in Toronto: 

What the heck does “dressing age-appropriate” actually mean?  (And yes, this question is from a bakery!! LOVE IT)

Answers from Holly:

While this topic is something Holly talks about EVERY SINGLE EPISODE, the term ‘age-appropriate’ can actually be confusing depending on how old you are and where you are in your life at any age. 

As an example: Holly is 49 years old. But 49 for one person is not the same for another. If you are 49 years old with no children and are a fashion professional, your style needs may be different than someone else who is 49 and enjoying her days helping to take care of her new grandbaby.  

Dressing age-appropriate simply means not giving up-putting in some effort and wearing clothes that fit. Not dressing too old or dressing only to be comfortable. It also means not dressing too young. If your clothes are too tight, you are dressing too young. If your clothes are baggy, you are dressing for comfort. THESE ARE MAJOR FASHION CRIMES.

We don’t care how old you are, your clothes need to fit you well and you need to dress with intention. Meaning: Don’t give up. Don’t slob-out. 

Holly encourages people to dress a little out of their comfort zone and be a little unpredictable. Do not dress “safe.” Take a small risk and get yourself in a place that makes people question your age. 

Because that's what great style is: When people have no idea how old you are.

Suggested ways to combat dressing too old:

1. Buy nice jeans that have stretch in them. Not high-waisted, Mom jeans. Not your old 501 Levi’s. Shop for jeans that fit well and hold you in.

2. If you need new evening shoes, and you are worried your feet will hurt, take the extra time to shop for style and comfort. Not just comfort. No old lady shoes with padding and low heels, or no heels. You CAN find a beautiful shoe with a lower heel that is still dressy and fun. 

3. If you are ready to let your hair color go grey (which is fine), have a plan. Go to your hairstylist and learn how to transition your color. But more importantly, you must still have a hair STYLE. Just because you go grey does not mean that you don’t need a current haircut or you stop blowing out your hair. Long, wiry, non-styled hair is not OK.  You need to keep it looking sharp.

How can I dress better without breaking the bank when I work in a corporate job supporting higher-level executives?  

Answers from Holly:

When you shop for brands that fit your body best, you won't have to spend a lot to get a great look. Wearing the best-fitting slacks and dresses will automatically elevate your style. Then add fabulous accessories to pull it all together. 

Understand what your body needs. If shapewear or support is needed underneath, get fitted for a great bra and wear the shapewear. 

Keep your shoes in great shape and buy yourself a freaking nice handbag. Shoes and bags do not need to be high-end designer brands, but they do need to look nice and be made of quality materials. Pick a color and style that is not trendy. And honestly, if your bag costs a little bit more, consider it as an investment in your career. You can easily use a nice bag for 10 years!

And the secret sauce? Gift yourself with a Jiffy steamer. Crisply ironed clothes go a long way in making your style look elevated.

A great fitting bra changes your perspective on how you look in clothing. Just because you're a Size A does not mean you opt out of getting fitted for a bra. Period. Exclamation point!

If you are extra large, you need to get a minimizer or something that really fits. This means a bra that holds your breast tissue up and on the inside frame of your body - not down, not out, not up to your chin - to define your waist. Y’all know we’ve talked about this before. Go. Get. Fitted. For. A. Damn. Bra.

What is happening, Fashion Besties? How fabulous have you had to look this week? As for Holly, she was HOME. ALL. WEEK. Don’t be concerned. It happens. 

So, with a little downtime, we started sifting through her DMs and emails and decided to share just a few of the questions we get from listeners and clients. 

Y’all have gotten so fashionably savvy and smart! Your questions remind us that we have many areas yet to discuss, and we are so proud of the listeners that check with us before they commit a fashion crime! #TRUTH

First, some starters:

What to wear when you are home all day or working from home:

• NO CRAPPY PJs or SWEATS. Just because you do not step over the threshold for a day or two, you do not have the right to slob-out. Someone might come to your door and then you'll be diving behind the couch. Your dog needs to be walked. You probably need to get the mail. You may have a Facetime call with your mother. Who knows? What you wear to bed, and around the house, is just as important as what you wear out the door. More on this later.

1. 1. For Holly, she started wearing her stepson’s oversized and comfy T-shirts to bed. This quickly turned into a very unsexy fashion crime. So, she decided to up her pajama game with cute and comfy PJ sets and you know what? She quickly realized that a 'put together' look even for bed is better when you are trying to not look like a slob around the house.  A mix of practical yet comfortable with a splash of sexy – and of course - is machine washable. When you look good, you feel good; even when you are sleeping. 

What to do when you HATE shopping:

Sidebar rant: Some people like to shop. They evolve their style with their age. They're naturally excelling in life. Fashion and style are fun for them. They enjoy getting dressed. Just because you are a woman does not mean you automatically know from birth how to shop, or even like to shop or enjoy getting dressed. THAT’S OKAY!

1. 1. Women are supposed to have it all, including knowing how to look good, defy their age and continue working until they literally can't in their later years. But look, you're either born with a shopping gene or not. If not, this is a learned skill that you can master just like anything else.
   2. The #1 reason people hating shopping is you think nothing fits your body shape. First solution: Shop for the body you have today. Not the 10 pounds you are going to lose someday. And don’t wear what you wore 15 years ago. Face the facts, go into a store, try on current styles, and let a salesperson help you find your fit. ASK FOR HELP.
   3. The #2 reason people hate shopping is you don’t know what you're looking for coupled with being stuck in a style rut. Yes, you might take an occasional shopping trip out of sheer life-threatening circumstances. like getting divorced, or a new job, or you're going to an important event that’s going to force you into an overwhelming department store when you realize a). you haven't shopped in 10 or 15 years, or b). you try on 2 things and then come to the conclusion that nothing in the world fits you. From here, there's usually a "get me out of here" fight going on in your head with you and your inner voice saying, that you can totally do this, but by this time you're in the car already. This usually leads to an "See, nothing ever fits me..." freak out and bout of over ordering online...(FASHION CRIME), or opt out of the event altogether to avoid the stress of finding an outfit. Sound like someone you know? #fashiontragedy

Holly is here today to share real answers to real questions submitted by 2 of our fashion insider besties. Only the first question is in the show notes here. Make sure you listen to the full episode to hear all of the questions and truth bomb answers!!!

Question #1:

Dear Holly,

I usually wear basics and neutral colors. But recently I've been in the mood to try something more stylish. How do I do this without embarrassing myself?

Answer #1:

This question, to be honest, really hurts my heart. This is somebody who obviously has been in their fashion comfort zone most of their lives. But as we’ve discussed before, when you shop for color, or for price, this is called shopping backward. Do not do this. You want to shop forward, or shop with intention, which means you shop for FIT FIRST. Not color, not price, not sales, not, 'I'll find a place to wear this," shopping.

Shopping for color and thinking that this is a great way to get yourself out of your comfort zone is not a good idea. Because you don't shop for color, you shop for fit.

The best advice we can give is to go into a store, look at the displays and the mannequins. Look at department store websites to see what's trending, best sellers, and the newest styles. Ask for help and try things on. But do not buy something just because of the color or the price. #Iwillfindyou

Pro Tip: Listen to Episode 97 | How to Dress Right for Your Body Type

This answer leads us to a TON of other issues about how to shop:

1. Calm down, you're not looking for a ball gown. You are simply looking for a change. You want to be more on trend, you want to feel confident at an upcoming event, you want to evolve your style and you want to try something new! Don’t overthink it or try to spend a ton of money on designer clothes thinking that this will solve all of your problems. Start small. 
2. If you work out a few days a week, it will pay to invest in your workout clothes. Try to plan your days around outfits that will carry you from pickleball to the pick-up line with ease. Plan your wardrobe-it will pay off. 
3. Don’t overspend or shop for clothes at cheap, big box stores. Think about CPW, which is Cost Per Wear. If it fits you perfectly, your confidence will go up. If that costs a little more, just think about how many times you will wear something you love. If it is a cheap trend or color, and fits you poorly, you may only wear it once (FASHION CRIME).
4. When you don't shop for a long time, you have no idea what things cost or why they cost so much. And you also don't see the value of spending money on clothes. This is called a financial block. Don’t wait years to shop.
5. Don’t give up on your style. If no one dresses in your family, at your office or in your circle of friends, this is not reason to stop upgrading your wardrobe. Be the best dressed because you are going to get dressed, whether you go to the office or to the grocery store. Just becuase you are getting dressed doesn't mean you are "so dressed up...". You're just dressed.

To recap, wanting something new in your wardrobe is empowering. Do things in your life that do not deplete you. Because when you deplete, deplete, deplete all the time, you have nothing left to give.

Do something for yourself. Especially if you feel guilty about spending money on yourself. You need to fill your own cup, so that you can then fill others. 

Once you know how to dress in a way that makes you feel good (FIT), everything in your life is going to shift. People are going to start to ask you if you've lost weight, changed your hair, etc. There is something different about you because you decided to focus on you. The energy shift is inevitable. 

And you're going to want to keep continuing to feel that way, which will encourage you to keep your wardrobe rotating, which will keep you practicing how to shop, which in turn is going to get you to stop hating shopping, which makes you nicer. And when you are nice, you're going to be nicer to me. And when I'm nice, everything runs smoothly. 

Go shopping, get help in the store, try something new, make sure it fits. And, send us more questions!!

How it started:

Gretchen believes in only having things in her life that "spark joy." She nearly lost her sister to a horrific car accident and came face to face with life's fragility. 

She had been in a hospital waiting room for hours anxious and desperate to hear whether her sister would survive, when the doctor finally announced that she would make it through the night. 

Her now-husband gifted her with a beautiful pair of black and emerald earrings. At the moment, in the ICU waiting area, it was not something she was expecting, nor felt she could be present for. 

But he insisted, "If these bring you joy for two minutes, that's two minutes of joy you need right now."  (Host note to ladies: Marry THAT man!)

Joy in the face of incredible adversity. That moment laid the groundwork for Gretchen’s drive to empower women and equip them to live their lives to the fullest. 

She looked around and saw many women in New York struggling to perform multiple roles and responsibilities: building a career, being a sensitive friend, achieving their health and fitness goals, dating eligible partners, having a rich social life, becoming an adult, leading a community, caring for others around them, becoming a solid partner, managing a household, raising a family, taking conscious care of themselves, and being socially responsible citizens.

ARE YOU EXHAUSTED YET??? 

In these pursuits, Gretchen found the women she came across being weighed down physically and emotionally. 

So, she was inspired to take her 10-year experience in handbag design under prestigious fashion labels to create her own brand characterized by functionality, aesthetics, and purpose.

How it’s going:

Fast forward five years, and GG Maull now delivers functionality through handbags that can be worn multiple ways, including hands-free, with removable pouches that make it easy to change between handbags, and with even weight distribution.

Gretchen’s objective in delivering these unique functionality features is to provide customers the feelings of lightness, freedom, strength and security. 

“She observed her husband “preparing” to leave the house with astonishment that all he needs to do is grab his cell phone and wallet.”  

In contrast, she felt compelled to have a bag that gave women the ability to contend with expectations for the day ahead. 

Women fill multiple roles during the day, from perhaps mother in the morning to executive by day to sexy dinner companion or concert-goer at night. 

And while these roles certainly bear their respective shares of responsibilities, women don’t have to feel anchored down anymore.  With Gretchen’s “multi-wear” approach, every woman can feel that as her role transitions, so can her handbag. Loving this journey for us!

Gretchen’s designs are different because they are versatile. But they also look different because of her passion for the types of leather she sources and her love for all aspects of design: color, texture, uniqueness.

THE BOOK:

“Lies My Mother Told Me. Tall Tales from a Short Woman” was written by Melissa during COVID in response to the crazy times we were in. She was constantly asked, “What would your mother say…” about the state of insanity that thus ensued for 2 years. This is not a biography by any stretch of the imagination. This book is purely satire and a delightful read. 

Holly shared her 3 favorite parts of Melissa’s book:

1. The time Melissa lined up all her Barbies on the side of the bathtub, and her mom said they all looked like hookers.
2. The story of Joan pushing Melissa to get married – starting at the age of nine-what like that's weird?
3. The wish that if only Joan had married Kermit the Frog, Melissa would have gotten his long and shapely legs. 

“My mother once said: No man has ever put his hand up a woman’s dress looking for a library card.” – Melissa Rivers, remembering stellar parenting advice from her mom, Joan Rivers. 

THE PODCAST:

Also, during the pandemic, like most of us, we were venting and sharing stupid pandemic memes in group texts a simple a way to survive. Melissa turned that same idea into a fabulous new podcast called “Melissa Rivers’ Group Text Podcast” where she hosts her celebrity friends, and they talk all the crap they text about – with humor – of course! We are so happy to have Melissa as a fellow podcaster – and Holly invited herself to be on the show at least 1,000 times. I mmeeaan....at least.

LIFE and FASHION OVER 40:

What advice does Melissa have for women over 40? What is a 'yassss' and a 'um, girl no'? What is the best part of getting older? To be blunt, her list was short.

Her views on fashion are clear:

1. Women after 40 get stuck. Holly has been saying this FOR YEARS. You need to clean out your closet, you need to evolve, you need to dress for your body type.
2. You are allowed to wear “Trend Lite” – a version of the latest trends that don’t show your stomach or other body parts. Holly FINALLY gets permission to wear her crop tops, as long as they at least touch the top of her pants or belt. 
3. Get your clothes tailored. Expensive clothing will look cheap if it doesn’t fit well. Just a small nip up or out can make a huge difference!
4. Your feet grow. This happens whether you have babies or not. Just like you cannot wear shoes that are too small, don’t wear clothing that no longer fits well. Not breathing IS NOT optional!

CAN THE FASHION POLICE EVER COME BACK?

Melissa and her mother Joan, along with others, were part of different entertainment generation. Covering the Red Carpet with a critical eye is from days gone past. While the intent was to not hurt anyone, comedy, humor, and criticism has a very small margin of tolerance, and rightly so. It is the end of that chapter, and time to channel that energy into new project!

We are so honored to have a very special guest for our Designer Spotlight series this week! Introducing Marrisa Wilson, of Marrisa Wison NY - an up-and-coming fashion designer you need to know - and the recent winner of the 2023 Fashion Group International Rising Star Award, Ready-to-Wear Category. #YYYAAAAASSSS

As you know, one of Holly’s passions is supporting new designers, small businesses, and especially women entrepreneurs that are changing the fashion industry for the better.

This series in our podcast gives us the opportunity to learn about how fashion is created, and to peek behind the seams (pun, get it? ha!) to learn about the art of fashion and the artists who create it.

Have you ever wondered how someone becomes a fashion designer? A painter? Or any sort of creative producer? 

Of course, it takes raw talent. And it usually presents from an early age. We hear this often, as is the case with Marrisa.

But it takes an extra spark. And grit. And courage. And, of course, hard work. If anyone tells they got lucky in the fashion business, don’t believe them. 

ABOUT MARRISA WILSON NY:

Marissa Wilson, New York is a contemporary women's wear brand based out of New York. The idea behind this brand is that they want their customers to “wear their soul.” 

Marrisa, the creator and designer, is a first-generation Guyanese-American who uses the natural influences and inspiration of her Caribbean home as she hand-draws and hand-paints the prints that are eventually transformed into her unique designs. 

She puts a lot of love into each print she develops, as she really wants the wearer to be able to bring out their own personality through her bold colors and soft, easy silhouettes.

Her company first launched in 2016. But in 2021, they started to show at New York Fashion Week and things really started to really evolve. 

HOW IT STARTED:

Marissa wanted to be a fashion designer from a really young age. Her mom is a creative person, and she comes from an entrepreneurial family. 

She was raised in a family-owned business growing up. So, it didn't seem crazy to get out of school and start a business right away. 

When she was in the second grade, her mom was upholstering the cushions and curtains around their house, so there were little scraps of fabric all around and she started playing with them. Surrounded by her Barbies, she started draping and pinning and that's when her mom first taught her how to hand sew.

She eventually went to school to study fashion, majoring in fashion design with a double minor in fashion merchandising and product development.

She then went on to study under some of the best in the business, doing internships and undergrad work in the industry and gaining a lot of experience as she was building the idea of her business. 

She worked for companies such as J. Mendel and Oscar de la Renta, and has the affiliate experience, as well, with mass brands like DKNY, Calvin Klein, and hip brands like Rag and Bone. Having all these experiences in her back pocket, she made a point to take in everything that she could learn along the way for her own business. This really put her on the path to entrepreneurship. 

From being present in the design room, the fabric rooms and onto product development, she was able to really understand the entire supply chain process.

“So, going from that process from how do you take a concept that you've developed into a design? How do you bring it to life, not just in that first sample, but also how to make it production-friendly, and how to make it so that other people can actually wear those clothes? This is what I learned early.” – Marissa Wison

THE TARGET AUDIENCE:

The MARRISA WILSOIN NY client is anyone who feels like they want to push the bounds of what they add to their wardrobe. This woman wants to wear something different, but they don't want it to be fussy, or have difficulty figuring out how to do that.

Marrisa likes to make sure that the wearer feels they can be themselves and bring out their own shine and their own light through her clothes. 

She is intentional to design without ego. It's not about her creating a perfect archetype of who she wants to wear her clothes. What she really enjoys is when someone is trying on an interesting color or print they might not have tried before, and then there's a sort of ease when they think: Hmmm, this kind of thing works for me!

The art is really through the textiles, she feels. Marissa loves interesting prints, embroidery techniques and beading. You might have a favorite pair of jeans or a favorite blazer that you might be able to pair her designs with. 

She hopes her clients can incorporate Marrisa Wilson NY into their existing wardrobes by allowing people to have the freedom to step outside the box by adding something really special, without the fear of going too far. 

DOWN TO BUSINESS:

As an artist, Marrisa can always create spectacular print designs. But as a business-owner, she must consider production, supply and demand, and what customers are looking for. 

Issues like sizing, style trends, manufacturers, textile suppliers, sustainability, buyer demand, and buyer purchasing habits all factor into each and every creation. 

Marrisa credits a Made-to-Order business model on a part of her success. By allowing customers to choose which designs they want before they are manufactured allows her to collect information what her clients want. Why produce an entire season of styles without knowing what customers will buy? Instead, she puts her designs out there, and produces what her customers are indicating they want via pre-orders. 

Through this process she has learned things like the importance of deep sizing options. Her buyers have indicated size trends and demand well before production, so she knows exactly the size range she needs to produce. 

They have partnered with an agent overseas, who makes sure that all their brand values are carried throughout the product development. MARRISA WILSON NY works with factories that do small batches. These not massive factories. They work with mills that can take their smaller batch runs. 

Marrisa loves these relationships, because these are partners who are looking to grow with them, and who are doing it in a small, controlled, and sustainable way. 

WHAT ELSE?

Marrisa and Holly spend the rest of this episode discussing her latest collection, with influences from her Guyanese heritage: think of tropical trees and palm trees, and an easy-breezy lifestyle. 

She is also planning her upcoming wedding (in Seville) and she in is NOT designing her own dress. #YASSSGURL

What’s Up? What’s the haps fashion friends?! We are getting down with denim this week! Holly's been getting so many questions and emails...are skinny jeans out? Are they over? What if I don't like flare?

Did you know that for 150 years – that’s right, one hundred and fifty years – denim has been a staple of the American wardrobe? Don't get caught in the hype of what people say is “trending” for jeans, because this is a staple in your wardrobe that will not change - unless your specific body type changes.

On this week’s episode of the Fashion Crimes Podcast, Holly will clear up any denim confusion, misconception, bewilderment or skepticism right here and right now.  We also talk about a fun vintage shopping adventure and some client styling projects she has been working on. 

First, Holly reminds us that the fashion cycles run on 20 years. So, what the hell does that mean? It means what was popular 20 years ago, is popular again now because people who were not born 20 years ago, are seeing the trend for the first time.  #ugh #teenagers #sonotyoung

Now, in the case of denim, what we're seeing now is that LOW RISE FLAIR denim is back.  #omg #pleasestop

Sorry to say it, but it was popular in the 70s. It was popular in the 90s. And now, it's popular again. Just to be clear: this particular denim trend skews pretty young. 

Like really young. Like baby-young.

As a popular personal stylist, Holly has been getting a lot of questions lately asking about this particular trend, and if people should try them. For the love of GOD, skinny jeans are not out. 

People need to know what the jean trends are! All you need to know if this; just say no to crack; not a good look.

Holly has explained this on many occasions, so just remember.  Whatever body type is your body type, that is the type of jeans you need. 

Jeans that fit you properly will never go out of style. Live it, learn it, love it.

So, if you love high-waisted jeans that are skinny, and that's the support you need for your specific body type - that will never go out of style, FOR YOU. Don't buy into the trend hype.

Denim never goes out of style. But here are come key guidelines to consider when choosing your jeans:

1. Shop for Fit: What is the support you need? Are you extra tall? Are you extra short? Are you thick in the middle? Do you need but support?  Find the fit you want then the colors you like within that style.
2. Color: Holly likes to tell her clients they need a couple of light jeans, a couple of dark, and one or two pair of black jeans. Your jeans should be different brands not all the same. And try to get a variation of colors and rinses if possible.
3. Price Points: Expensive does not mean better. You can spend $278 on a pair of jeans or you can spend $78 on a pair of jeans. Why? Because of the garment construction and the treatment of the fabric. The more involved the dye process is the more expensive they will be. Shop within your budget, If you're not sure how to do this; just send an email. 
4. And what is a Denim Fashion Crime? JEGGINGS. Holly starts using her swear words when she gets to the part in the episode about jeggings. You’ll see. DON'T DO IT.

Next, Holly shares her adventures from the Manhattan Vintage Show, featuring vintage dealers that are pretty high end from all over the country. It was a clothing explosion – and total sensory overload - but, oh so fabulous! Like Candy Land for clothes.

Holly shares a key insight about vintage or secondhand denim – or any item – and that is things were made a long time ago. So of course, they're not going to fit the same as they would now. If you're buying to wear, do not buy or purchase any jeans or items that are vintage or secondhand unless you could try them on.

The fun of the vintage show, and a styling tip to consider, is it is a great way to build on your style collection. If you are struggling with having your style evolve, going to some place like a vintage store or a consignment store might just spark some interest in you and give you a little inspiration!

Build a collection of things you love, things that speak to you and things that – of course – fit you well. It’s an investment in YOU and your fashion happiness. You got this.

And speaking of happy, Holly has been working her style magic with some special clients this week. Holly helps many clients virtually via her Pinterest Boards, to help guide them on what to wear and where to buy things.  The shared Boards a fun way to visually see key pieces or whole outfits. 

But sometimes, clients panic a bit after purchasing one or two items and then aren’t sure what to wear them with. Holly wants you all to calm the down. Don’t be afraid to mix your jackets with your pants and skirts. Loosen the reins a little bit and don't overthink it.

Don't trip up on the details of coordinating every single thing down to the shoe.

How does a talented fine jewelry designer go from working in the jewelry industry to starting her own jewelry design business? Well, this week’s special guest tells us it sort of started when her work became the mascot for a close-knit community…

Meet our Bestie Julie Lamb of Julie Lamb NY. She is a career designer who received a Metalsmithing BFA from Syracuse University.  For Julie it was always all jewelry, all the time - pretty much her whole life.

After starting her business nearly 7 years ago, Julie Lamb has just been named the “Rising Star” in the jewelry category, winning a prestigious award from Fashion Group International. 

THIS. IS. A. BFD! And Holly was there to witness it all in person at the event!

Julie Lamb NY now has several jewelry designs, but one of her very first items incorporated her namesake: The Lamb.  

According to her website, the “Be Ewe line encourages individuality in the most playful way with a lovable Lamb logo lets the ewe shine through. Make sure to 'stand out’ & ‘be herd’ wherever you may roam. Or just revel in your badass Black Sheep status, in black diamonds!” How fun is that???

How It Started:

Julie tells us a hilarious story of learning how to navigate her new business on social media – specifically Instagram – and did not know the power of hashtags.

After posting her first few “Be Ewe” designs using the hashtags “lamb jewelry and “sheep jewelry,” she started getting knitters and quilters - and even some sheep farmers - responding! 

This New York City girl now found herself talking to sheep farmers and knitters, and even had one little customer from Future Farmers of America. They were sweet girls from Texas and other places who wanted Julie’s lamb jewelry for their graduations and events. As odd as it was, it was a great learning lesson: she quickly learned how hashtags work!

This led in a direction she never could have imagined – a group of knitters invited her to their industry events like the Rhinebeck Sheep and Wool Festival. She feels she was listening to her customers and was happy to go wherever they encouraged her to go to grow her business. 

It is hard to sell a new jewelry line (or any new product), but she was fortunate to find a separate audience that no other jewelers could play with. She found a community of lovely knitters who were very passionate and supportive. It was a different facet of the business and one that helped her grow. 

But all knitting aside (just kidding, she does not knit), Julie is now known for her fine CITY, Metropolis and Bespoke jewelry designs. She uses 18K yellow gold, 14K white gold and 14K rose gold for her designs – preferring the stronger yellow tone of 18K.  You can see all her work at www.julielambny.com.

How to Start a Business:

As an art major, Julie is a bit mad that art schools do not teach basic business skills. Math is not her thing – not that there is anything wrong with that! – but a little accounting and a little Excel spreadsheet work would have been helpful. 

She recommends that no matter what your product is, or how talented you are, you need to learn basic business skills early on to be successful. Some lessons are learned the hard way, avoid this one. 

How to Style Jewelry:

We all know Holly loves to mix metals, and literally tells us that every week on these episodes. Julie’s rule for wearing jewelry is ‘the more the merrier!”  If she goes out, she piles it on.

THIS. IS. EPIC.

In case you have been living under a rock, Holly and Nolan attended #NYFW last week, and managed to see just about every angle of it - from top designer shows to after parties to the #VMAs and even a #MetGala after party!!! Their asses were dragged all over town - from all the #COVID tests they had to take to all the amazing shows they got into!

It was so amazing to see all of this City back online again...  All of the designers, fashion editors, famous people, models, DJs, music artists, influencers, new designers, new brands, old friends and literally all of New York City.  (One of Holly’s favs was Botox the Dog, look it up!)

All was going along swimmingly, until Nolan crossed his legs and audibly SPLIT THE ASS OF HIS PANTS OUT at the Frederick Anderson show. #CandaceBushnell was there, as well as some of the #Hermès heirs, and a sprinkling of fancy schmancy NYC socialites - all whom heard the whole deal. But not to be defeated, afterward, our Nolie then walked down Park Ave with his neon boxers hanging out, because he is NOT going to miss an after party. “It was funny, but it also sucked.” – Nolan

Learn about all of the outrageous venues the designers chose to present this year: from a skate park in the rain at Chelsea Piers, to the #MeatpackingDistrict and #BatteryPark to #LittleIsland on the Hudson River, and even #RockefellerCenter – all gorgeous and fun settings that added spectacular layers to the art and fashion of the week.

We do have to take a moment to discuss Holly’s PRIMA DONNA COMPLEX during the week. At the Monse show, she flat-out refused to give up her front row seat when some “manager” asked her (DUH).  But some poor saps did get moved, and then #ParisHilton and #NikkiHilton sat down from her...like 3 seats down. Paris - with her GARGANTUAN diamond engagement ring. Really, it was completely blinding. Holly is still talking about it.

Holly also lost her composure – but only for a second – while standing in line for a show (AFTER ON-DEMAND COVID TESTING, and registration, etc.) - and was cut off just as it was their turn. But, with one little Karen-esque scene, they all ended up with tickets to the VMAs, so you are welcome. I mean, it really was her best work.

Did we mention yet (only 3 times) that Holly and Nolan ended up at the #VMAs? It was BE-YOND, and then Nolan dumped his friends and got to go backstage and found better seats without the rest of the crew. Not that we are mad or anything. We were just 80% happy for him.   

#BustaRhymes and #DojaCat ended up being favs of the night. 

Be sure to check out Holly and Nolan’s “David and Moira” moment. For the VMAs, Nolan says he ‘looked like a pimp’ and Holly had a fashion identity crisis, which in the end, ending up being one of their better fashion moments after all. But there was some painful banter getting there. 

OK, that's a wrap. As Holly says: “We had a great time, we met some new people. We reconnected with old folks that we knew. We have some new fans of the podcast. We have some newer friendships. So, it was great!”
